wanwick WI members were inspired by an article in ‘WI Life’ (monthly magazine for WI members) about WI members in Wiltshire who resurrected the garden of a hospital.

Rowthorne Home for Older People is the only residential home in Swanwick and houses friends and relatives of some of our members. The Deputy Matron needed a safe outdoor space that residents could enjoy. A run-down and neglected area was suggested to become the ‘Rowthorne Garden Project’. This quickly blossomed into a project involving Swanwick WI members, Swanwick Men’s Shed, Amber Valley Voices choir, Swanwick Methodist church, local Rotarians, financial support In June 2018 Swanwick WI’s meeting identified some knowledgeable gardeners and ladies who volunteered their skills and plants. A plan for the garden was designed, and work began on fund-raising. A ‘begging’ letter and emails were sent locally. The response to letters was immediate, with the offer of a garden ornament from a local company. More phone calls followed with offers of financial help, including local councillors using funds from their Community Leadership Scheme. Swanwick Men’s Shed was tasked with building raised planters and benches. Then Interserve, an international company undertaking large scale projects, became involved. They have local offices and operate the charity ‘Interserve Employee Foundation’ which supports local projects that can make a difference in the community. After various meetings, we established that they would send 7 employees to do the groundwork, including knocking down walls, levelling paths, digging borders and building a stumpery. Last year’s summer was hot and dry so the ground was like concrete. Work was finally started on 12th September 2018. Money was saved when a local farmer offered to remove bricks and rubble, saving the cost of a skip. In true WI spirit, a lunch was provided for the workers, including home-made soup and cakes. Residents at the home watched with interest, especially as the shed appeared to move by itself when three people lifted it from inside! Compost was donated and delivered by local horticultural suppliers. Swanwick Men’s Shed installed 3 large wooden planters, 4 wooden benches, and an obelisk. Two benches were donated by families of past residents with dedication plaques.

4

By October, the garden had been transformed. Residents joined in planting bulbs and pansies in the planters. In November, two WI members attended a willow weaving course at Kedleston Hall, producing willow pheasants for the garden.

The garden was left over winter and work started again in early March, with a church member installing fencing to make the area safe. More plants were put in borders and pots in readiness for the official opening. Rowthorne’s Easter Fair on 14th April included the official opening of the garden, and was well- attended. All sponsors were invited, and councillors Steve Marshall-Clarke and Paul Smith officially presented a cheque. Paul spoke of his delight at what had been achieved and hoped the garden would be entered into a garden competition within Derbyshire County Council Homes. A member of the Rowthorne staff also spoke of the value of the garden to the residents. Amber Valley Voices choir sang a medley of songs, and children enjoyed an Easter egg hunt. Our team of gardeners have achieved a great deal in just 8 months. The garden is a place for residents, staff and relatives to enjoy a peaceful space or perhaps take part in tending the garden. This could evoke happy memories for residents who once gardened. There is lots of published evidence to support the benefits of a garden, especially for residents suffering from dementia. It can help them improve and maintain their quality of life. Advice has been given to our gardeners by one or two residents who were formerly gardeners themselves, and are happy to join in now. The Rowthorne Garden Project has been enjoyed by everyone involved, and noone could have envisaged what a fabulous community project it developed into. Digital photo books will be made to provide a lasting record of the development of the garden for the residents of Rowthorne.

RAMTC brings you another hit show…. RAMTC are bringing another cracking show to the community this year, 9 to 5. There is still time to get your tickets and support the group by contacting Mansfield Theatre. It will be a great evening out, as it always is and if you don’t know the story, here is a brief outline below….

Set in the late 1970's, this hilarious story of friendship & revenge is outrageous, thought provoking, risqué and even a little romantic. Pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss, three female office workers concoct a plan to turn the tables on their despicable boss and transform their workplace. It’s about teaming up, standing up and taking care of business! This hilarious production is brought to you by the award winning Ripley & Alfreton Musical Theatre Company.

Burger in a bowl

A FREE REGULAR TEA OR FILTER COFFEE WITH A £5 PURCHASE

So, here’s an interesting idea. Let’s face it the best of the burger is the filling so why not shed the bread and fill up on the tasty part! Serves: 4

Ready in: 25 minutes

Syns per serving: 1

Ingredients:

Method:

• Low-calorie cooking spray • 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) • 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • ½ iceberg lettuce, roughly shredded • 8 gherkins, sliced • 1 small red onion, finely chopped • 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped

1. Spray a large, heavy-based non-stick frying pan with lowcalorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. Add the beef, onion and garlic and stir-fry for 7-8 minutes, or until the beef is cooked through and the onions have softened. Take the pan off the heat and drain any fat from the mixture. Season lightly.

For the SW super sauce:

2. Meanwhile, put all the SW super sauce ingredients in a bowl with 4 tbsp water and whisk until well combined.

• 3 level tbsp extra-light mayonnaise • 5 tbsp fat-free fromage frais • 1 level tbsp American-style mustard • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 2 tsp white wine vinegar • ½ tsp garlic salt • ¼ tsp onion granules • ¼ tsp sweet smoked paprika

3. Mix together the lettuce, gherkins, onions and tomatoes and divide between 4 wide bowls. Spoon the beef mixture on top, divide the SW super sauce between the burgers and serve hot. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk

Book Review Circe by Madeline Miller

If you enjoyed last month’s recommendation of the Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, you’ll love Circe by Madeline Miller. ( Kir-Keh if you’re interested in the Greek pronunciation).

Chosen as a book of the year by numerous reviewers and newspapers, the novel casts Circe, the witch goddess of Homer’s Odyssey (the one who trapped poor Odysseus on her island for a year and turned sailors into pigs) as a heroine in her own right, not just a bit player in a man’s mythic tale. If there is a similarity to the Atwood book, it is the idea of female empowerment, giving a woman the right to her own story as part of the history of women which, it might be argued, has been so often left out of official (or even literary) accounts. But it’s also a lovely, lyrical and sometimes very dark tale where the expectations of normal human morals are turned on their head. These are the stories of mortals, gods and monsters which are perfectly in tune and relevant for a modern audience. And the story is also a subtle sideways look at what it means to be a human, whether male or female. It’s compelling and beautifully written. It educates and entertains and captivates. A brilliant joyous treat.

After some distance you will cross over a lane with a wooden gate and the main road over to your left to continue back into the trees along a footpath running parallel with the road. 6. After some distance you will come into a clearing. Continue a little further on to reach a T junction with a lane. Turn left along the lane for a short distance and then just prior to reaching a wooden gate and a main road, turn right to continue along a footpath going through the trees running parallel with the road. Continue along this footpath for some distance until reaching a T junction of footpaths with a fence directly in front of you. Turn right to continue along a footpath going gently downhill with a fence on your left. 7. Ignoring any paths to the right continue straight ahead for some distance until reaching a clearing. Continue straight ahead passing underneath some power lines and close by to a pylon on your left. After, head back into the trees and be sure to ignore the path immediately to the right and continue straight ahead keeping, and staying close to open views on your left. 8. Continue straight ahead for quite some distance being sure to stay close to the open views on your left. Eventually you will reach a T junction of paths. Turn left and then continue straight ahead with a hedge and open views to your left. Continue straight ahead for some distance until reaching and passing underneath a railway bridge onto a road. Follow the road for a short distance to a T junction of roads and then turn left. 9. Follow this road for quite some distance until reaching another T junction of roads. Turn left and after a short distance pass underneath a railway bridge to continue back to the start/finish.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

This national doggy event attracts visitors and competitors from all over the country. There are pre-entered agility and flyball competitions, lurcher racing and dog shows. One of the most popular attractions is the Fun Dog Show. This is the biggest fun dog show in Derbyshire and has some excellent prizes. The main ring this year has some great new and exciting displays as well as welcoming back old favourites like displays from Derwent Valley Gun Dog Display Team and PADs dog display team. The main ring finishes off each day with Terrier racing which always proves to be very unpredictable! You can even enter your own dog.

All the competitions and attractions have their own ‘have a go’ events so you can try with your own dogs.

What would happen to you and your family if you became ill and unable to work? As you go through life your financial focus changes. In our experience we see key life defining moments having a massive impact on the financial security of an individual or family. Our lives are marked with significant events, for example buying our first home, getting married, having children, perhaps getting divorced or a loved one becoming sick. All these, and many more, have an impact on our finances. What would happen to you and your family if you became ill and unable to work?........... According to a survey of financial advisers undertaken by Royal London, many advisers feel that younger consumers are looking at their income protection needs too late. Is this because they don’t feel a ‘need’ or is just because they’re unaware of what protection is available to give them security? In our opinion, if you start paying income protection from a young age and get used to the monthly outgoing then it is much easier to manage and budget for. Knowing that you don’t run the risk of losing your home for example and having a regular monthly income if you are unable to work due to illness, is a reassurance we all would like so let’s start talking about it sooner rather than later. Short or long-term policies are available so make sure you’re aware of what is out there so you can manage the unexpected better.

Contact us today to discuss your protection needs. 12 Diamond Avenue, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottingham, NG17 7GR 01623 750000 info@hampshirehill.co.uk www.hampshirehill.co.uk Important information The way in which tax charges (or tax relief, as appropriate) are applied depends on individual circumstances and may be subject to future change. Mike’us sings M

This list of thankless jobs had me thinking about a weird thing I saw once when out walking – Someone had gone along a (particularly badly) poo lined path sticking little flags into each of the offending dollops. It’s something I’ve never been able to forget, despite trying. I mean why?!

Some thoughts

(from a near fully fit George) The good news is that he is feeling much better and would like to thank all those who have asked after his health. Whilst convalescing he has got round to thinking about why he ever decided to take on the thankless task of becoming UCIP’s People’s Champion. He has had so many bizarre conversations with locals who have ‘buttonholed’ him in the past twelve months or so, that his enthusiasm for the role has been sorely tested. Still, he consoles himself that he is a volunteer carrying out unpaid research for a laudable purpose and he could, although he doubts it, give it all up anytime he chooses. When I called round to see him last week he did say that he had every sympathy for those who were in what he called ‘impossible’ jobs that they just had to put up with as they had no other means of ‘putting food on the table!’ Here are a few he came up with:-

Public Relations Advisor to the POTUS:Let’s face it, the money may be good but who in their right mind would want to be responsible for ensuring that Donald Trump doesn’t, metaphorically speaking, put his foot (or any other part of his anatomy you can think of!) into it.

Tourist Officer for the Potteries with specific responsibility for Burslem:Anyone who knows this part of the world well, and particularly if they are regular visitors to Vale Park to watch Port Vale, will know that whoever is charged with promoting the area as a holiday destination, has next to

no chance of success. It may look as if it has suffered collateral damage in a war, but in reality, it is self-inflicted.

Dog Poo Finder:Not the most pleasant of jobs I’m sure most people would agree. However, if anyone out there is desperate for an environmental role that, whilst unpaid, is likely to be well rewarded by cash donations from grateful villagers, there is a vacancy for just such a role in Newton. NB – this will undoubtedly apply to other locations in our area. They would of course make themselves redundant if they managed to identify and ‘name and shame’ the irresponsible owners of such incontinent pets.

Manager of the Scottish Football team:For a nation that once proudly showed the world how the game should be played, Scotland is no longer producing the likes of Don Masson, Sandy Pate, John Robertson or Ted McMinn and it has become clear that whoever takes charge of the national team is now on a ‘hiding to nothing.’ It will be a long and painful process, but any future Scotland manager must get the Scottish Government to ban the sales of Macaroon Bars, Tunnock’s Caramel Wafers, deep fried Mars Bar Suppers and limit drinkers to no more than three pints of Tennent’s Lager in a session, before they will have any chance of producing successful footballers ..........................and that will never happen. Look out for more thoughts from George, in July.

You might not think that the words ‘excitement’ could be applied to working on an allotment but think again! There is the excitement of seeing seeds you have planted break the surface, then eating your fresh lettuce, radishes, Swiss chard, beetroot, early potatoes, the first broad beans and more. I’m just enjoying my February-planted spinach which has grown really well. Then there is the excitement of thinking up ways to stop pigeons, slugs, snails and other pests from attacking your seedlings and of beating the weeds. ‘Fifty ways with slugs’ has plenty of ideas but a friend with a serious slug problem on her flower bed goes out late on a damp evening with a torch and some large scissors………….! You can get excitement from ‘experimenting’ by growing exotic vegetable crops to baffle your neighbours who follow the same planting regime each year (because they know it works well). So you might impress them with sweet potatoes, purple carrots, lime-flavoured tomatillos, celeriac, dark purple Blauhilde climbing beans, strawberry spinach, Goji and honey berries, grape vines or acid-soil loving blueberries. For real excitement think about the possible archaeology. Our site was allotments before 1914 and from the bricks I still dig up must have had a building(s) on it long ago. What pottery sherds might you find? I was digging a runner bean trench the other day when my spade hit something hard and metallic at least a foot deep. Should I call Time Team? I excavated deeper and finally up came the complete rusty end of a six-prong fork -definitely Iron Age. What tales that could tell? For some excitement on a Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) allotment plot this summer call Mick (07725402033) for details.

Gardener’s Calendar

There are quite a lot of opinions on moss in a garden. There are moss killers about for those who prefer perfect grass, and if you do want to get rid of it, cut back overhanging branches or foliage to allow the patch more light and aerate the ground properly so grass roots will survive better. But there’s also the view that if moss is growing in your garden, it’s probably because the conditions are right and that it might be worth thinking about leaving it be and letting it create a lush Japanese-style carpet which you don’t have to cut. It prefers cool, shady damp ground and you can help it to expand by transplanting tiny pieces from an existing bed.

A blessing or a curse, it’s your decision. Oriental poppies are spectacular but can look very messy once they’ve flowered. Deadhead them and cut back to ground level to encourage new growth. You may also find that hardy geraniums will flower again later in the year if you cut them back after flowering.

Water any edible crops in grow bags and containers once daily preferably in the early morning. If you have potatoes in containers don’t over-water as this may compact the soil and prevent tubers from swelling. Feed weekly.

Top tip: Keeping thirsty plants well watered can be difficult if it’s hot this month... Dig a well around the base and this will enable to water to be absorbed deeper at root level.

COOPER’S CORNER

Look again, you know you want to. Search ‘Kia Mansfield’

So, the football season is over and all that’s left is the memories, some bad, some good and some, which were quite frankly bizarre – VAR has certainly had an impact on the beautiful game. But I’m not the one to make sense of it all. I’ll pass you over to our Barry for that honour… If you’re sitting down... We’ve had nine months of chaos, drama, chairmen exposing themselves on social media, clubs spying on each other and no shortage of incredible comebacks. And that barely scratches the surface. Have we ever known a campaign quite like it? I certainly can’t remember one where I’ve constantly used the phrase, ‘bloody football, eh’? In truth, we should have known we were in for something special after England’s terrific performance at the World Cup in Russia, which was followed up by an impressive Nations League campaign. At the time of penning this column, Derby County had just upset the odds to beat old foes Leeds United in the play-off semi-final, while Nottingham Forest watched on with eyes of envy as the Rams clocked up another Wembley appearance having failed in their quest for a top six finish. Elsewhere, Mansfield Town and manager David Flitcroft somehow managed to pass up the giftwrapped opportunity of promotion to League One and Notts County, well, oh dear Notts County. Installed as promotion favourites last summer following a fine season which saw them narrowly beaten by Coventry City in the play-off semi-final at Meadow Lane, the walls have since come crashing down around them. No longer can the Magpies call upon the prestigious title of ‘World’s Oldest League Club’ – a crown which will inevitably feel like a kick deep into the genitals for their fans, has now been passed over to Forest.

And no, it isn’t Stoke City. We’ve had that confirmed by the EFL – as if there was ever any doubt. Instead of facing up to life in the third tier, as they hoped would be their reward come the end of the season, they’re now plotting trips to Fylde, Bromley, Dover and Barrow. At least Notts’ old chums Chesterfield will be there to give them a warm embrace. What the Magpies’ collapse has shown for all to see, is that if you don’t get the right people on board, allow egos to take control and get recruitment all wrong, this is always a risk. I’ve written in this column earlier in the campaign about Alan Hardy’s indiscretions – a man who arguably had good intentions from the outset, but lacked the professionalism, respect or nous to ever allow the club to be managed successfully. Hardy’s desperation to be liked, to be front and centre became his downfall and now, he’ll forever be remembered as the man who took the oldest league club in world football, out of it. Getting back won’t be easy for Notts, they’ll be the big fish in a very competitive pond. Just ask Mansfield, Lincoln, Luton and more recently Chesterfield, just how tough the National League is, and make no mistake about it, they will be the big scalp. It will be a long road back for the Magpies, but it’ll be fascinating watching from close by to see how it all plays out. But first, they must sort out the ownership. Then and only then can this famous old bird start moving forward in the right direction.
