lthough the business was centred predominantly around furniture, the commodities William Robert dealt in were many and various. A bill from 1896 describes the business as “furnishing stores”. Underneath, however, the description expands to “house furnishers”, “brokers” and “general dealers” as well as “dealers in harness and farming implements”. A bill from 1906 incorporates “cricket and football goods by leading makers”. Another bill from December 6, 1906 shows that a watch has been sold by WR Nutt to Mr K Bryan for £8 and 10 shillings, and a bill from 1901 reveals that a tricycle had been sold. The myriad of commodities sold include calico, cloths, oval dishes, baking trays, frying pans, shovels, teapots, spoons, forks bedsteads, carpets, oilcloths, linoleums and all manner of goods too long to list them all! An advertisement dated Saturday 28, April 1917 in the Derbyshire Advertiser and Journal promotes an auction being held by WR Nutt of four stone-built dwelling houses and two closes of land. The auction took place at The Gate Inn at Tansley. Increasingly WR Nutt organised auctions. On April 2, 1922 the company auctioned the contents of The Vicarage following the death of the Revd. J L Blake.

When William Robert died, his son, Thomas, was left to fend for himself and made a creditable success of the business his father had begun. He did exceptionally well in business and became a well-known and respected figure in Clay Cross. He also served on the local council and was a Justice of the Peace. Thomas was married to Eleanor, who also helped with the furniture business. Together, they lived at Stretton. T Nutt & Sons would continue to diversify business in addition to the mainstream trading line of furniture. Radios and cycles were also being sold. People of the district were invited to a “Furnished Bungalow on View”, which boasted all the latest designs from the ‘Daily Mail’ Ideal Home Exhibition. Not only that, “A Komfort Suite as supplied to the Queen of Afghanistan” was included in the furniture on view!

Top: The Crown Hotel in Clay Cross in 1901 – the location of the current T Nutt & Sons shop. Above: William Robert Nutt, the founder of Nutt & Sons in Clay Cross in 1869, was also an auctioneer and valuer. Left: WR Nutt also sold football and cricket goods at the turn of the century.

Book Review

City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert

This summer’s big beach book might just be City of Girls, the latest from Elizabeth Gilbert, who’s best known for writing Eat, Pray, Love - the best-selling book (and later film) people either loved or hated. City of Girls is a piece of wonderful escapism – and there’s not a lot of that about at the moment – following the fortunes of Ivy League college drop-out Vivian Morris in 1940s New York. Banished by her parents from her wealthy lifestyle, Vivian plunges headlong into a life of streetwise dames, vaudeville theatre, sex and throwing off the shackles of convention. Making her living by sewing costumes for the gorgeous girls who perform at her Aunt Lily’s run-down Manhattan revue theatre, she abandons her straitlaced upbringing and embraces her new life and deals with the repercussions which inevitably follow. Elizabeth Gilbert says she wanted the book to be light and bright and crisp and fun like a champagne cocktail. It’s certainly that. The things which could bring Vivian to the floor aren’t allowed to. At some point in a woman’s life, the book explains, she just gets tired of being ashamed all the time. After that, she is free to become whoever she truly is. It’s a wise and celebratory story full of hope and the joys of living life to the full.

Hope Valley Business Zoo Business Networking @HNBZ Networking

Do’s and Don’ts

Business owners may avoid networking for several reasons. Rigid, ‘must always bring referrals and never miss a session’ kind of events seem like hard work.

Do spend some time working on ‘your pitch’, usually 30-60 seconds is required.

Large yearly membership fees plus additional weekly meeting payments quickly add up and, if you’re just starting, out these can seem like just another unjustifiable expense. However, networking has changed yes, the ‘old style’ membership ones still exist but there are plenty of pay as you attend groups around and everyone who runs their own business should factor in attending meetings on a regular basis.

Do ensure that you mention exactly what you are looking for – e.g. the type of business or client you would like to meet. Do attend meetings regularly, dipping in and out won’t help you build relationships. Do refer business to people you network with – reciprocity is the name of the game! Do follow up with people – networking is not just about handing out business cards. Don’t launch straight into a sales pitch. Don’t expect results (i.e. sales) immediately, it could take several months Don’t speak to only one person or group – ensure you talk to as many other attendees as possible.

Gardener’s Calendar

Good neighbours are a wonderful asset for any gardener at holiday time but if you’re going away for a few days and haven’t got anyone to do the honours with your houseplants, there are a couple of temporary solutions. One is to cover your plant with a clear plastic bag and seal it, making sure the plastic doesn’t touch the plant (use canes) Water vapour given off by the plant will be collected and reabsorbed to stop it drying out. This will only work for a few days however. The second is to use a bit of capillary matting. Insert one end in a bowl of water and the other into the compost of your plant, or stand the plant on the mat and let it gently drink.

r

Most of July in the garden should be spent sitting with a cup of tea or a glass of something cool. You’ve done the hard work and now it’s time to enjoy. But do remember to keep deadheading to keep the flowers coming – particularly sweet peas. And after perennials such as delphiniums have flowered, cut right down to the ground and you may be rewarded with another flowering later in the summer.

TOP TIP!

Use rainwater from a butt to top up ponds. Tap water will encourage the growth of algae. If you do get algae and weeds, twirl them round a stick and leave the remains on the side of the pond to allow wildlife to crawl out and back into the water.

BEE FRIENDLY GARDENING

As we move into High Summer with July we hope that our Salad (and barbeque) days have arrived.

Fresh herbs are on the menu: adding flavour to leafy greens, infusing dishes for the outdoor grill, and garnishing cool drinks on sunny days. The plants themselves are often confined to the Kitchen Garden, or a pot by the backdoor. But many combine beauty with utility and are worthy of a place in the flower garden where they can be considered ornamental plants with benefits. Left to flower they are a magnet for bees and other pollinating insects. Compact Marjoram will edge a raised bed, Chives give interest among short herbaceous flowers, Bronze or Green Fennel are both delicate yet imposing at the back of a border. Sages, Thymes, Hyssop, and Rosemary all bring something different to a decorative scheme. Other plants that should be looking good on the nursery and available to plant now include: Agapanthus, which makes a wonderful statement plant by itself in a bright pot. Hostas for a shady corner, Astrantias with their dainty yet long-lasting flowers, the unusual Sea Hollies (Eryngium), fiery Red Hot Pokers (Kniphofia), the giant daisy-like Leucanthemums, and Heleniums for late Summer colour. Among the shrubs, Fuchsias, Escallonias, Hebes and the Summer Flowering Heathers (Callunas) should all now be coming into their own. Don’t forget to check how bee-friendly your garden is and learn how to improve it with planting recommendations tailored to your garden’s growing conditions. This is easy and fun to do using The Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s “Bee Kind” tool available on their website bumblebeeconservation.org

There are two common buttercups and the other is ‘meadow buttercup’. This humble flower called Ranunculus acris is returning to meadows and roadsides. As a flower of meadows and other grasslands recovering from intensive management and fertiliser inputs, its story is very different from the creeping variety. One of our most resilient wildflowers of grasslands, surviving when others are squeezed out by modern farming methods, this buttercup quickly recovers its abundance if fertilizer levels drop and management is less intensive. We see this across the Peak today with buttercups on the rise as some farmers revert to more environmentally-sensitive methods. Quite tall, upright and elegant, meadow buttercup is a dominant species in old meadows and lessintensive pastures, and along flower-rich roadside verges and urban green-spaces. As we move into summer proper, this buttercup at its peak lights up fields and other open spaces. Not for meadow buttercups the shady lane, wood or riverbank; this is a flower of open sunlight and bigger horizons and it is delightful.

You see it along roadways where verges have been left to grow in spring rather than being hacked to within an inch or so of their lives. Meadow buttercup and finer-leaved grasses tell of recovery and are soon followed by showy flowers like ox-eye daisy, black knapweed, and in damp areas, cuckoo flower. Get management right and keep things reasonably tidy, (important for public acceptability), and in a year or so of regular maintenance things start to improve. If conditions are suitable, you can get plants like spotted orchids and bee orchids appearing alongside swarms of ox-eye daisies as seen on road verges. The humble meadow buttercup is the first early sign of this recovery. The name ‘buttercup’ comes from the association with cow-grazed pastures rich in their yellow flowers and generally avoided by grazing animals. It makes eminent sense with colour of butter, the shape of the flower, and its abundance in cow pastures because the cattle don’t eat it. The Latin name ‘acris’ means acrid and this avoidance in part explains the buttercup’s success. Livestock avoid eating the green plant and it causes blisters if they do. Herbalists described it as ‘… a fiery and hot-spirited herb… not fit to be given inwardly …….an ointment of the leaves and flowers will raise a blister and may be applied to the nape of the neck to draw rheum from the eyes’

Wet weather has favoured one of our common flowers, the ‘creeping buttercup’. In damp grasslands, marshes, and wet meadows this little flower is a blaze of bright yellow; enough to strike fear into the heart of gardeners across the region. This is the ‘weedy’ buttercup with long, straggly runners and an ability to take over unkempt borders and damp lawns. However, take off your gardening hat and at least for a few weeks this is a very pretty little flower.
