From the Editor Hi all, So, it looks like I got my wish (for a sunny July) and broke my hex on the bad weather of previous months. Whilst I love the good weather, I do feel for our distributors who climb hills (and steps!) in the blistering heat to deliver our magazine through your doors. It’s not easy getting the magazines out to all the areas we reach and without our reliable, indomitable team we just wouldn’t be able to bring you the Voice, so join me in raising a glass to them and give them a friendly smile when you see them, I know it means a lot! This is the second month since our big split and so far the feedback has been really good. It looks like we have mostly got it right over which towns and villages should go in which edition but we will keep listening and will change things round if it isn’t right for our readers. One of the reasons we decided to split the magazines was to bring more relevant content to each area and allow us to focus more on each local community. One of the ways we would like to do this is a regular ‘community focus’ page in each magazine. The page will focus on an individual group, club, or charity each month. It will be COMPLETELY FREE to be on the page and all we ask is for you to provide the words and any pictures or imagery and our graphic designer will pull it all together. So, if you are part of a club that is looking for new members, a group that has something they would like to tell everyone about or you are a charity that is looking to raise money for a good cause why don’t you send me around 250 words all about what you are doing
and we will pick the best one’s to feature in forthcoming months. Here’s to a sunny August. Happy reading!
Emily x

PART 3 homas and Eleanor also had five children, of which Thomas and his younger brother Robert came into the business before the Second World War. T Nutt & Sons continued to sell anything and everything. During the post-war years, bills show the repair and re-upholstery of settees. By 1952 one invoice describes the business as “Body Builders & Coach Painters”.
The main thrust of the business, however, was still furniture. Bob was a Derby County supporter and, for home matches, he would round up fellow Rams’ supporters and head to the furniture van at the back of the shop. They would set off to the Baseball Ground sitting on bits of furniture and covered up in carpet just in case they were stopped by the Police. Non-essential journeys were not allowed during postwar rationing. They took a piano every week on the pretext that it was being delivered to a house in Derby. Instead, it just kept going up and down the A61! David and Roy, Thomas’s sons, along with Patrick, Robert’s son, joined the company in the Sixties. As years progressed, the business gradually moved away from furniture and into carpets and flooring. Current Managing

Director David, along with younger brother, Keven, also a director, now run the business. Over the years, T Nutt & Sons has been recognised both locally and nationally for its excellence in customer service and quality of products. Their reputation for providing customers with top-quality service, workmanship and fair, friendly, professional advice is unrivalled. This has resulted in a string of awards and accolades. Patrick Nutt, for example, who trains and oversees the fitting team, won the National Institute of Carpet Fitters ‘On Site Assessment Award’ for three successive years. He was also placed 5th, 3rd, 2nd and 4th in four consecutive years at the Carpet Fitter of the Year Competition. Helen’s Trust annual 10k and 3k runs took place on Sunday 30th June in the beautiful grounds of the Chatsworth Estate. This challenging but rewarding 10k run is a multi-terrain course which winds its way through the spectacular grounds and woodland tracks of the estate before opening out onto the moor top- the scenery is second to none. The 10k race is a mass participation run, open to runners of all levels and abilities and this year many people took to the start line. Successive years have seen levels of participation continue to rise, with 2019 one of the most popular races to date, with over 1,000 runners signing up. Almost 200 runners registered for the more leisurely 3k Family Fun Run which followed directly after the 10k race. The race has become a prestigious, popular event thanks to the historic venue and this year enjoyed donations and sponsorship from 18 businesses including Ideal Shopping Direct and Irwin Mitchell Solicitors in Sheffield who manned and sponsored the water station.
Heart rates and spirits were raised by Helen's Trust annual 10k run at Chatsworth. With food and coffee stalls, a vintage Prosecco van, and games and face painting for children it has become a day for all the family to enjoy. Baslow Physiotherapy donated post race massages and Bloomers of Bakewell donated Bakewell puddings for the first 250 runners. This year first, second and third in the race were Daniel Haworth from Matlock Athletics Club, Stuart Bond also from Matlock and Andy Harding from Belper Ten Twenty Triathlon Club. Ellie Stevens from Birchfield Harriers, Amy Clark from Buxton and District AC and Kelly Butler triumphed for the women. Daniel’s winning time was 33 minutes and 32 seconds with Ellie completing the course in 38 minutes and 33 seconds. Zoe Woodward, race director and Fundraising and Business Manager at Helen’s Trust said: “This year’s race was a great success as we have raised over £30,000 for our charity. We’d like to thank our army of volunteers who really stepped up and helped make the event a huge success. We had over 60 volunteers come and help on the day. From the marshals who directed and encouraged the runners, to the car park attendants and people who manned our stalls we couldn’t have asked for more. It’s these volunteers that make our 10k such a friendly and special event and all gave up their time to ensure everyone enjoyed a safe run. Roll on 2020!”

Do’s and Don’ts
Business owners may avoid networking for several reasons. Rigid, ‘must always bring referrals and never miss a session’ kind of events seem like hard work.
Do spend some time working on ‘your pitch’, usually 30-60 seconds is required.
However, networking has changed yes, the ‘old style’ membership ones still exist but there are plenty of pay as you attend groups around and everyone who runs their own business should factor in attending meetings on a regular basis.
Do ensure that you mention exactly what you are looking for – e.g. the type of business or client you would like to meet. Do attend meetings regularly, dipping in and out won’t help you build relationships. Do refer business to people you network with – reciprocity is the name of the game! Do follow up with people – networking is not just about handing out business cards. Don’t launch straight into a sales pitch. Don’t expect results (i.e. sales) immediately, it could take several months Don’t speak to only one person or group – ensure you talk to as many other attendees as possible. Don’t GIVE UP
Hope Valley Business Zoo list of events:

Networking
Large yearly membership fees plus additional weekly meeting payments quickly add up and, if you’re just starting, out these can seem like just another unjustifiable expense.

Book Review The Rumour by Lesley Kara
Rumours are dangerous things. Especially in a small community where prejudices and simmering resentments lie just under the surface. When single mum Joanna hears a casual comment at the school gate that a murderer who was given a new identity is now living in their seaside town, she doesn’t intend to repeat it. But she does. Not that she’s doing it out of malice. But she’s new in town and trying to make friends with other mums so her lonely son will have other children to play with and won’t get picked on at school. The titbits of information she comes by and passes, on are her way of getting people to think she’s worth knowing. Before she knows it, and despite her misgivings along the way, she’s in deep and so is the rest of this tight little town, and there’s no going back. The Rumour, by Lesley Kara, is a thriller. But it’s also an interesting look at how idle gossip can affect people’s lives in sometimes devastating ways. Fake news, prejudice against outsiders and people who don’t fit it, paranoia about things we think might be happening but aren’t. Life in some layers of 21st century UK maybe. It’s a page turner, with a strong and horribly believable plot. A chilling tale for hot days.

Butterfly season in the Peak
Fully insured
All around the summertime Peak District you will see butterflies whenever the weather is sunny and warm; and of course even more-so if the weather turns hot. In the dale-side meadows and pastures you can expect rarities such as blues and even fritillaries, but along lanes, hedges, and in gardens across the region, there are commoner species in abundance.

Furthermore, with a little thought and planning you can ‘rewild’ your garden and turn it into a paradise for wildlife – and particularly for butterflies. Part of the trick is to plant your garden flowers strategically, almost like a military campaign, and to do this for the seasons and for the time of day. Essentially you want butterfly-friendly flowers out for as much of the year as you can, from late winter to late autumn. You can do this through careful selection of plants and then selective placement in the garden – for example to get vital direct sunlight from early in the morning to late in the evening. Obviously the size, location and topography of your garden make a big difference in terms of what is possible, but careful planning and planting can make a huge difference. You can go to the extreme of creating a native wildflower meadow for example but you need meticulous attention to the soil, aspect and the species you sow in. However, even without a wild ‘meadow’, you can draw in good numbers and variety of feeding butterflies simply by adding the right plants in the right places. From spring shrubs and bulbs to late autumn ivy, many sources of nectar and pollen are
easy to grow. During the summer the impact is easy to increase with shrubs like buddleia and honeysuckle, herbs like marjoram for example, and herbaceous flowers such as red valerian. Placed around the garden to catch sunlight at different times of day, then the flowering period can be influenced and you can guarantee flowers in direct sunlight all day long. Expect to get a good selection of the more common but spectacular butterflies, broadly called the ‘Vanessids’ or ‘Nymphalids’; otherwise known as the Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Comma, and their cousins. Many of these have larvae that feed on common plants like nettles, and the adults will come in abundance to good nectar sources. Just a thought though, it is easy to get the butterflies to come to your garden, but only if there are places for them to breed in the wider countryside. So, if you want butterflies in your garden then you must do your bit to safeguard the wider countryside of our precious Peak District as well.

Gardener’s Calendar
We’re now into the season of watering and deadheading. Deadheading, as you’ll know if you’ve read the gardening column before, is the best way to keep plants flowering. If they can’t set seed they won’t think their job is over and so will be forced to go on producing flowers. You need to do it every day at the moment. Watering can or hose in one hand, snippers in the other. We may well have more water than we need, if the last of summer reverts to the weather we saw in soggy June. But if not, it’s at the heart of keeping your garden at its best.
r
Deep watering will help prevent powdery mildew which will attack many plants if they get stressed because they have been allowed to dry out. Plants which have already flowered in spring, such as rhododendrons and camellias can’t just be left to take their chances with any rain we may get. They need to be kept watered so next year’s buds can develop. And you can prevent blossom end rot on your tomatoes – brown or black spots developing first on the fruit – by watering frequently. Again, don’t let them dry out.
TOP TIP!
Pinch out your chrysanths now to produce healthy bulky plants in autumn. 06/11/2018 18:16

BEE FRIENDLY GARDENING By the time we reach August, dead-heading a plant whenever we pass it should be an almost unconscious habit. Removing the spent flowers of Scabious, Lavender, Knautia, Buddleia and many others promotes continued bud formation and prolongs flowering. It also gives a sense of how long a given plant will flower this year. Will there be a lack of blooms later that can be met by a few careful plantings now? Good perennials that will carry colour through until the first frosts include Japanese Anemones, Asters (frikartii Monch is excellent), Anthemis, Sedums, Heleniums, and Rudbeckias. Dahlias, though they need care to see them through the Winter, remain the monarchs of the late Summer border.
Elsewhere, remember to trim lavender after flowering to stop it getting too leggy.

If you are considering planting trees next Winter or Spring it is worth bearing in mind that here at the Nursery the ordering for next season is done in mid August. If you have any requests that we might be able to help you with let us know as soon as you can. HUGE SELECTION OF SHRUBS, BEDDING, Later in the month, dry bulbs for Autumn planting should become available. Every garden has room for a few Crocus, either at a border’s edge or in a pot. These are one of the joys of early Spring both for us and for new Bumblebee Queens emerging from hibernation for whom they provide a crucial early source of nectar and pollen. At Calver Sough Nursery we have helpful bee information on display and good bee plants are highlighted with our ‘Bee Friendly’ logo. Various useful leaflets from The Bumblebee Conservation Trust (www.bumblebeeconservation.org) are freely available, and we support the Trust through the sale of their badges and Bee ID posters.
