From the Editor Hi Readers! I told you we would get a sunny July (still true at the time of writing)! Well a stopped clock is right twice a day but as my hex on the weather has been lifted, I won’t risk it by cursing August with any good weather predictions. Good news! Bailey, our latest, beautiful foster dog has found a new home! Bailey was a superstar who went from a scared, shy boy to a confident bouncing bundle of love and happiness. I would like to say a special thankyou to the ‘Mad Aunty’ who was an amazing help. I can honestly say fostering dogs is one of the toughest yet most rewarding things I have ever done. It seems like nearly every day there is another dog in a bad place that needs help and by giving them a home, a bit of training and a lot of love for a short time you can quite literally change their lives. We help Spaniel Aid UK (www.spanielaid.co.uk) but there are lots of other charities looking for help.

Here’s to a happy, positive August, enjoying our lives, whatever the weather! Happy reading,

PS: Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

In the media they call this time of year the “Silly Season” as every year, during the parliamentary break and school holidays, the media produce a load of daft news stories as everyone’s on their hollibobs and there are no proper news to write about. So, why don’t we do the same? We could take the summer off from the usual media whirlwind of headlines of chaos and misery, turn off the news, put down the paper and our phones and take some time to look around and see the good things around us in our lives and communities? There are so many good things happening out there and opportunities to get involved. Check out our things to do for a few ideas or our out and about section if you want to get involved in a club, group or charity. For our part we will be running a prize draw raffle stall at the fabulous Alfreton Party in the Park on 1st September to raise money for the Rotary Club of Alfreton to give away to local and international charities. The prizes have been donated by our generous advertisers, including a brand-new Nintendo Switch!!!. If any business wants to donate a prize (there’s some free publicity in it if you do) please get in touch.

Barbecue Pulled Pork It’s Summer… that means al fresco dinning and to serve with that healthy salad than lip smacking, finger licking bbq pulled pork? Serves: 4

Ready in: 8 hours 25 minutes

Syns per serving: 4

Method: 1. In a small bowl, mix the passata, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, mustard powder, garlic, sweetener and seasoning. Transfer to a small pan and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens. 2. Meanwhile, heat a non-stick frying pan until hot, then sear the pork on all sides. Transfer to a slow cooker, coat with the sauce and cook for 8-12 hours on low. 3. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place on a cutting board. Allow the meat to cool for approximately 15 minutes, then shred into bite-sized pieces using two forks. 4. Remove the sauce from the pan and set aside to drizzle over the meat later.

Ingredients: • 500g passata • 5 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 1 tsp mustard powder • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 3 level tbsp sweetener • 1.5-2kg pork shoulder, visible fat removed

MANDY’S TRAVEL PAGE Hi I’m Mandy your Personal Travel Counsellor. Saga’s Spirit of Discovery is Britain’s newest cruise ship and was named in Dover by the Duchess of Cornwall, but before the big day, I along with a number of travel agent VIP’s spent 2 nights onboard getting the full Saga cruise experience. I may not be old enough to be a passenger on a full cruise, but during my time onboard I really did wish I was. From the moment we stepped onboard this boutique hotel style ship it was as if the stresses of life melted away. We were the first people to arrive, so as we made our way into the ‘Living room’ on deck 5 we were greeted like long lost friends by the ships crew. The Living room is a place to sit and relax with a coffee, it has lots of different areas to sit and just watch the World go by. It is the ‘hub’ of the ship. Open all day and night you can get ice cream, fresh pastries, homemade cakes or even a cocktail. Spirit of Discovery is the first Saga ship to have a full theatre and The Playhouse is going to be a must for passengers in the evening. The ships entertainers have a total of seven stage shows ready to show off including a ‘Best of the West End’ which we saw during our cruise. The ship has so many beautiful public areas that it is hard to mention them all, but my favourite day or night has to be the Britannia Lounge. It is a double height lounge with beautiful sea views, it sits at the front of the ship above the bridge. In the daytime it’s a venue to hear from guest speakers or a quiet space and at night it comes alive with dancing and live performances. The beauty of a Saga cruise is that it is all inclusive, there is no need to worry about what your drinks bill is going to be or if you can afford to eat in one of the speciality restaurants or the biggest stress of a cruise, ‘how much and who should I tip’ everything is taken care of. Do you know they even include free WIFI. Getting from home to the departure port and back again is even included on a Saga cruise, so if you live within 250 miles of Southampton or Dover which all of us readers do, you don’t even have to worry about petrol and car parking. If you are over 50 years old and are thinking about a cruise sailing from the UK Saga Discovery really could be the one for you. For more details give me a call or send me an email and I can tell you all about it.

Book Review The Rumour by Lesley Kara

Rumours are dangerous things. Especially in a small community where prejudices and simmering resentments lie just under the surface. When single mum Joanna hears a casual comment at the school gate that a murderer who was given a new identity is now living in their seaside town, she doesn’t intend to repeat it. But she does. Not that she’s doing it out of malice. But she’s new in town and trying to make friends with other mums so her lonely son will have other children to play with and won’t get picked on at school. The titbits of information she comes by and passes, on are her way of getting people to think she’s worth knowing. Before she knows it, and despite her misgivings along the way, she’s in deep and so is the rest of this tight little town, and there’s no going back. The Rumour, by Lesley Kara, is a thriller. But it’s also an interesting look at how idle gossip can affect people’s lives in sometimes devastating ways. Fake news, prejudice against outsiders and people who don’t fit it, paranoia about things we think might be happening but aren’t. Life in some layers of 21st century UK maybe. It’s a page turner, with a strong and horribly believable plot. A chilling tale for hot days.

Alfreton Rotary President Installation

Monday 8th July saw the installation of a new team and the re-installation of Mandy Oldknow for her second term to run the Rotary Club of Alfreton for the forthcoming year. Not content with being the first female president of the club, Mandy is also the first person to serve sequential terms at the club for a decade. It has been a good year for Rotary, with some fantastic fundraising events from the regular Santa Sleigh visits at Christmas to well supported evenings of entertainment and fun, including Sea Shanties and Race Nights.

Pictured – left to right Roger Stevenson (Junior VicePresident), Mandy Oldnow (President) Roger Holroyd (Senior Vice-President)

Here at the Voice we are very proud to be members of the club, which we were able to join due to their innovative introduction of Corporate Membership, a scheme which is being used to engage with local businesses, schools and the wider community. This is a great example of the breath of fresh air that Mandy has brought to the club as she looks to build on a fantastic history of service and fundraising in the local community, whilst moving into the future with new energy and enthusiasm.

The Rotary Club of Alfreton are always looking for new ideas and suggestions on the best way they can uphold the rotary motto ‘Service above Self’ and in doing so support the needs of local, national and international communities. If you want to get involved or find out more about the club visit the website at www.alfretonrotaryclub.org.uk or find us on facebook @rotaryalfreton

Preventing Heatstroke in Dogs We’re all pleased when the sunshine makes an appearance and the summer starts to warm up. Our dogs enjoy it too - more enjoyable walks in the park and swimming in the river... but travelling or being left in the car can be less fun A vaccination is an injection designed to make If a dog is left in the car it can cause problems and it does not need to be a very hot day, midday or afternoon sun or even being left for long periods. Car windows amplify the temperature outside and it quickly becomes very hot, even in the morning sun or in spring or autumn. Leaving car windows open partly helps to circulate some air but will only reduce, not prevent, the car heating up. On warm days or when dogs are left for more than 15-20 minutes leaving windows open is not enough to keep them cool. In the UK it’s often easy for dogs to stay cool outside on a normal day, even when exercising, by panting, or seeking shade. However, if it is warm, the dog is not used to the exercise, or he is working very hard, then they can easily overheat. This is an even bigger problem for dogs that live in warmer climates. Heat stroke, also known as hyperthermia is when the internal body temperature gets too hot (above 105oF). Signs include heavy panting and hyperventilation (deep, fast breathing). Dogs have increased salivation (slobbering) early on and then dry gums, weakness and confusion as heat stroke progresses. Vomiting and diarrhea and sometimes bleeding can be seen, finally leading to seizures and coma.

How to prevent it: •

Ensure that dogs kept outdoors have plenty of water and shade.

Restrict outdoor exercise to the early morning or evening when it is cooler.

Keep your dog well hydrated, carry water when you walk (freezing a bottle and letting it melt though the day is a good idea if you have it in the car)

Get used to your dog’s normal breathing so that you can spot changes as he gets warm.

Only do steady exercise on hot days, allow dog to get used to the exercise as the weather warms up rather than doing a lot of running on the first warm day. The best time of day to exercise a dog is in the early morning or the evening if it is warm.

Never leave in dog unattended in a car in direct sunshine, or anywhere on a warm day.

Window shades are useful if driving with our dog in the car.

What to do if your dog gets too warm or you suspect heat stroke:

Cool the dog gently with tepid or cool water; don’t use cold water if you can help it.

Ice packs can be used gently over areas with good circulation e.g. “armpits”, groin or neck. (Be sure to wrap the pack in something and use in 5 minute bursts so as not to cool too quickly or cause frostbite).

Go to the vet’s immediately if you think your dog could be suffering from heatstroke. You can use the methods above to help while you organise transport to the vets. Heatstroke can cause delayed complications that are very serious, including death and this is why medical attention must be sought immediately.

Rambles with RafFa lake and

This month we are using one of the fantastic collection of walks available from the Chesterfield Canal Trust. We are warming up to the Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival, which will be taking place between Saturday 14th – Sunday 22nd September 2019. There will be a range of guided walks, from just 2 miles up to a whopping 46-mile epic, covering the length of the canal over 3 days! You can find out more at www. chesterfield–canal-trust.org.uk As ever our two dogs, Rafa and Flake were in tow (geddit!) and gave this walk a big paw’s up

There is a long and a short option for this walk. See the description for more details. This walk begins at the charming Katy’s Coffee Shop, located in the Hollingwood Hub. The hub is a popular spot for walkers and canal enthusiasts alike. We head out towards Barrow Hill, past some of sites of the industrial heritage of the area before diverting off to follow a path between the River Rother and the Railway line. We then drop onto the canal to pick up a scenic loop, which takes us as far as Wheeldon Mill Lock near Brimington. Finally, we will head back along the picture-perfect canal all the way back to the start. Sponsored by

2½ mile or 4½ mile circular walk from Katy’s Coffee Shop via Wheeldon Mill Lock

A shorter walk which should take you and your dog around 2½ hours to complete. Be aware, some paths may be fairly overgrown in summer months. There are also a couple of roads so please take care. Most of the walk is on paths and trails but please wear appropriate footwear and please follow the countryside code. START: Katy’s Coffee Shop, Hollingwood Hub, Works Rd, Hollingwood, Chesterfield, S43 2PF. There is a free car park at the site open Wed – Sun form 9.30am to 4pm.

4. The path eventually veers left and down through a grassy area, which can get very long in Summer. From here the route follows the River Rother on you left.

1. Beginning from Katy’s Coffee shop, go up onto the Works Rd, then cross the road and turn left to walk towards Barrow Hill. You will pass large buildings, remains of a once huge industrial complex.

5. After some distance the path goes up and through a gap in the fence. Turn left and follow the lane over a bridge to cross the River Rother.

2. After about quarter of a mile, as you approach railway bridge cross the road to take footpath on the left.

SHORTER OPTION (2½ mile total length) 6. When you reach the Cow Lane canal bridge, turn left along the twopath and back to Katy’s Coffee Shop for some well-earned refreshment! a a

3. Ahead of you there are a number of options. All paths will eventually bring you to the same point, however the official path follows the fence and is a little clearer, especially during the summer months.

LONGER OPTION (4½ mile total length) 6. Before reaching the Cow Lane canal bridge turn right, following the towpath to the Bluebank Lock. 7. Keep on this trail until reaching a bridge. Pass under the bridge and turn left to Wheeldon Mill Lock (a nice spot for a picnic). Then go left to follow the Towpath, which will take you all the way back alongside the picturesque canal to Katy’s Coffee Shop for some well earned refreshment!

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Meet the Hampshire Hill Team

short term goals and making sure we have the data we need to come up with some options” explains Ian “It’s not just facts and figures. During that first meeting we talk through various elements, including their incomings and outgoings, and try to get a really good idea of their dreams and aspirations.” Outside of work Ian enjoys cricket, running, football and taking long walks with his 2 Springer spaniels. Richard Hampshire, Managing Director of Kirkby-in-Ashfield based firm of financial advisers Hampshire Hill Group, can’t believe where the last 19 years have gone. ‘It doesn’t quite feel like yesterday that we moved in to our offices on Diamond Avenue, but it certainly doesn’t feel like it’s nearly 20 years!’, he says. ‘We’ve grown to a team of 15 now and it just seems like we’re going from strength to strength’. Richard credits the business’ success to their approach to financial advice and having the right people in his team. ‘We get that most people think they have to have a big pot of money before they can benefit from speaking to an adviser, but that’s so far from the case. Our approach to financial advice reflects our approach to business in general; the fact that we see ourselves very much as working in partnership with our clients. Our business requires a great team, and I’m really pleased to say ours is the best!’ Let’s meet a few people behind the business. Hampshire Hill take their clients through on a journey – one which starts with Ian Cannon – Lifestyle Planner. Ian has been part of the team for over 7 years and his experience makes him the perfect person to start the Lifestyle Planning Process with a client. “Some clients obviously have a sense of foreboding when they know we’re going to look at so many areas of their lives but I like to think that I’m good at putting them at ease. It’s all about getting a feel for the clients’ long and

36

Once Ian has collated some initial information the details are forwarded to the man behind the science, the company’s Paraplanner, Reece Edwards. “So my job title probably doesn’t mean much if you’re not in financial services! In essence, I work using the data Ian has collected from clients and bespoke software to come up with suitable solutions for the advisers and clients to consider. It’s a role I’ve been doing for 4 years now and it’s one I enjoy and find really rewarding. It’s always evolving as new products come on to the market and I really like working as part of the team”. Reece is an integral member of the team who is continually liaising with product providers, fund managers and industry experts to ensure the business is up to date with the latest products on the market. In his leisure time he enjoys watching mixed martial arts, football and cricket, is a keen gym goer and likes listening to and playing music. Reece works closely with the team of Financial Advisers, headed up by Team Manager Dale Bowler. See next month to hear more about Dale and other team members.

Mike’us sings M

I think you should judge a comedy movie on how many proper laughs it gives you. On that basis this is a five-star article. Let’s raise a glass to Lord Toby Jug!

Lord Toby Jug (RIP)

Before his recent incapacity George, our intrepid canvasser of local people looking to identify the serious ‘issues of the day’ on behalf of UCIP – whatever happened to UKIP by the way? – with a view to creating a vote winning manifesto, was fortunate to have one of the last ever interviews with a true British great, Lord Toby Jug, prior to his untimely death in May. I suspect that many of you will be unaware of just what a visionary this gentleman was. As an example, when he heard of George’s role with UCIP, he made contact with our locally based People’s Champion through a trusted intermediary. The clandestine nature of the contact was necessary as, until Lord Toby Jug breathed his last, he had remained as leader of the Eccentric Party of Great Britain. His political career had begun with the Official Monster Raving Loony Party but they were forced to expel him as they found his radical views were at odds with their political agenda. Undaunted he formed his own party and toured the UK at various elections using a megaphone to encourage the public with the slogan “Don’t be a mug – vote Toby Jug!” He was confident that his policies were beginning to win support from the mainstream media when, sadly, he discovered that he was ‘not long for this life’. At this point, he contacted George to suggest that UCIP continue his good work. Listed below are some of his policy proposals. You, dear reader, can make your own mind up. • Nationalise crime to make sure that it doesn’t pay • Make use of discarded chewing gum to fill pot holes

• Reduce immigration by placing giant photographs of Russell Brand or Katie Hopkins at all airports and atop the Cliffs of Dover to discourage foreigners from entering Britain. • The introduction of five-day weekends and two-day weeks • Replace sleeping policemen with members of the House of Lords • Build more multi-storey schools to encourage higher education • Place bottles of beer on all British beaches so that any invading forces would get drunk and forget why they’ve come • All citizens with a speech impediment to get a 15% discount on phone bills • Tackle the problem of growing obesity by introducing strong glue to lip balm. When he realised that his time was nearly up, his thoughts turned to the appointment of a suitable successor to continue his good work. He considered Boris Johnson but after taking a jug of water and a comb to tidy his hair, Lord Toby Jug took the view that “He’s too much of an extremist for the Eccentric Party of Great Britain. He’s just a tad too bonkers.” Well, as our George has since pointed out, Lord Toby Jug may have promoted polices that the public considered a bit outlandish but he certainly appeared to know when he had met his match!

Gardener’s Calendar

We’re now into the season of watering and deadheading. Deadheading, as you’ll know if you’ve read the gardening column before, is the best way to keep plants flowering. If they can’t set seed they won’t think their job is over and so will be forced to go on producing flowers. You need to do it every day at the moment. Watering can or hose in one hand, snippers in the other. We may well have more water than we need, if the last of summer reverts to the weather we saw in soggy June. But if not, it’s at the heart of keeping your garden at its best.

r

Deep watering will help prevent powdery mildew which will attack many plants if they get stressed because they have been allowed to dry out. Plants which have already flowered in spring, such as rhododendrons and camellias can’t just be left to take their chances with any rain we may get. They need to be kept watered so next year’s buds can develop. And you can prevent blossom end rot on your tomatoes – brown or black spots developing first on the fruit – by watering frequently. Again, don’t let them dry out. Elsewhere, remember to trim lavender after flowering to stop it getting too leggy.

TOP TIP!

Pinch out your chrysanths now to produce healthy bulky plants in autumn. 06/11/2018 18:16

View from the Allotment

At this productive time of the year it’s interesting to stroll round the Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) Allotment site to see what other plot holders are doing. Pumpkin and squash plants, trailing over manure heaps, are a good sight but won’t be ready until the autumn. Thin-skinned new potatoes are being dug on many plots when plants are still in flower or just after. It pays to dig a root to check them for size. They taste best when eaten freshly boiled with some butter and salt so only dig what you need! Several types of lettuce are being grown on many plots. We like the Little Gem variety with their tight hearts. They go well in a salad with beetroot-and don’t forget that beetroot tops can be steamed like spinach or chard. Little leek plants grown from seed are going in for the autumn, winter and spring make a hole about 15cm deep and 3cm wide, drop a leek seedling in and water it in to get soil over the roots. Many plots have good crops of peas and mange tous and the scarlet red flowers of runner bean plants are a good sight climbing up poles set as wigwams or in a long frame. Broad beans have almost finished podding and have been harvested for freezing in our case. It’s still not too late to get an allotment started and there are plenty of vegetables that can go in now which will be ready this autumn or will over winter spinach, silver beet, turnips, carrots, raddish and even dwarf French beans if it is early July. Interested in some fresh air and growing fresh veg? Call Mick on 07725402033 for info about vacant plots at Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) Allotment Association. Martin Rumsby

COOPER’S CORNER Wow, wasn’t the Women’s World Cup an eye opener? It caught the imagination of the public and propelled the game to previously unheralded status. But what comes next? Here’s our Barry with his thoughts… It’s been another summer of World Cup fever across England, but this time, it’s been the women and not the men, attracting the millions to television sets up and down the land. In Sainsbury’s you see boxes of Budweiser with England’s female stars on, which is a refreshing development. I wrote in this column last month about the level of interest in the opening game with Scotland, and things have only gone from strength to strength in the last few weeks. More than 11 million people turned into the semi-final defeat to eventual winners USA – the biggest TV event of the year on these shores – this shows there is interest there, it just needs to be harnessed. England’s hopes of a first title win ultimately perished against the US, who in fairness, are probably the greatest women’s team we’ve ever seen, though Phil Neville’s side gave it a bloody good go. The challenge we face in this country now is quite simple. How can you transfer that level of interest into the Women’s Super League and those divisions below it? The average crowd last year in the domestic top tier was around one thousand and that is unlikely to rise significantly just because England got to the closing stages of a major tournament. It is true, that if major sporting success is witnessed on terrestrial television then it can boost the sport. England’s Rugby World Cup win against Australia in 2003 boosted the domestic Premiership massively, and there will be a hope something similar will happen in women’s football, while cricket has rarely been more

popular than when the Three Lions beat Australia in the 2005 Ashes series. The reality, however, I suspect will be somewhat different. Those in power behind the scenes are unsure of how to take the game forward, whether to allow the Premier League to have more say, or the Football League. Playing games at grounds like the City Ground and Pride Park will help, rather than in Forest’s case, playing on a plastic pitch on Chewton Street in Eastwood. If you’re hosting regular games at big stadiums, yes, they may be largely empty, but it will raise the profile and will also attract a different type of fan. Include women’s games with a men’s season ticket, give fans the chance. Forest have now incorporated the ladies’ team to launch a ‘one club’ mentality – now called Nottingham Forest Women – though, there was a huge chance missed with the lack of female presence when it came to the home kit launch. It does require financial backing from the FA and the clubs, but if the game is to grow, you’ve got to go out and grab people. Speculate to accumulate. The authorities have got to take a stand, they’ve got to make the whole sport more professional, give it more credibility and make it something the wider public can believe in. It can’t just be a conversation we have every couple of years during a major tournament when interest naturally spikes, it has to be something that’s delivered on a sustainable basis, every year.
