From the Editor Hi Readers, Welcome to the penultimate edition of 2019! I’m not really sure where this year has gone and I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that! n recent years David was invited to be interviewed on BBC’s Working Lunch and the fitters took part in DIY SOS. T Nutt & Sons also featured in the Carpet Foundation’s national advertising campaign. As a result of all these prestigious accolades, customers can remain assured that the impeccable standing of the ‘Nutt’ family name will long continue. Directors David and Keven Nutt along with cousin Patrick strive to ensure the hardearned reputation of the business is always maintained. Making up the team is manager, Andrew Gregory, who started as a Saturday boy 30 years or so ago when he was just 13. Andrew has learned the business from the ground up – initially sweeping the warehouse floor through the various stages of development to his prominent position there today. All the fitters are employed by T Nutt & Sons, with many of them giving loyal service for over twenty years. As members and major shareholders in the Greendale Carpets and Flooring Group, T Nutt & Sons can offer its customers the widest range of collection of carpets, vinyl, wood, Karndean and laminate flooring – all at the very best competitive prices.

Nutt & Sons to this very day. Keven says, “Keeping it in the family gives us absolute control over quality and service. If there’s a problem, a contractor will blame a retailer, or a builder will complain about a contractor. The customer doesn’t know who to turn to in order to resolve a complaint. It’s much better for customers to deal with us, as they can usually speak to one of the family direct.” T Nutt & Sons’ premises are welcoming and welllit, with a comprehensive range of neatly-displayed stock. The company has on display carpets and floorcoverings from all the leading manufacturers, and good presentation is clearly an all-important factor contributing to the company’s professionalism. From springtime there are attractive hanging baskets of flowers displayed on the well-maintained shop-front, and the company’s identity appears on clear van signage and there’s a smart uniform for all staff.

From its early days in 1962 to the present membership, the Greendale Carpets and Flooring Group has progressed from what was an exclusive ‘club’ to a nationwide association of over 150 independent retail carpet and flooring specialists. With a purchasing power just as great or greater than that of the multiples, Greendale offers customers the best of both worlds: access to an unparalleled pricing structure and the excellent service offered by independent retailers.

With hundreds of letters from satisfied customers on display, the foundation of T Nutt & Sons’ business is based on glowing reports and personal recommendations.

David concludes, “We always aim to be the best. Despite stocking the highest-quality carpets, laminates, real wood flooring and Karndean from all the leading manufacturers we are competitively priced in comparison with other retail outlets. We use quality underlay all the time. Our service is better than advertising. You’ve got to be involved with the customers. We visit them to explain in detail where any seams are going to be and encourage them to take out samples. We not only get repeat business from existing customers, but we also get a lot of business from their friends as well. Generation after generation of the same family keep coming back to us time after time.”

We’re All Europeans Really! Some 16,000 years ago Britain was still firmly a part of the European continent. A continuous landmass ran from the Shetland Isles in the north, travelling southeast and separated from Norway by a narrow channel, before taking in Denmark and finally joining up to what is now the west coast of Sweden. This huge landmass, where the North Sea now is, has been dubbed Doggerland and research has indicated that it was a lush territory, with good hunting grounds crossed by freshwater rivers. Ideal terrain in fact for a hunter gather society. Derbyshire is a landlocked county even now – imagine how far away from the sea you would have been 12,000 years ago! About 12,000 years ago, the melting glaciers of the ice age began to slowly submerge this land, but the landmass remained, at least in parts, until (in archaeological and geographical terms) relatively recently…8,000 years ago. It was this connection with the European continent that allowed early modern humans to travel into the heart of what is now Britain. Perhaps they were curious as to what lay further west (assuming they travelled from Doggerland or North if from what is now France/Spain) – but for whatever reason, by approximately 12,000 years ago we begin to see more traces of human occupation around Derbyshire. These early peoples used stone tools, utilised rock shelters and caves rather than build permanent lodgings and were hunter gatherers. They would spend the summers gathering what they could, slaughtering and butchering animals etc, before presumably hunkering down to see out the winter. We can have no real clue as to the methods they would use to preserve and store foodstuffs, but I personally tend to think that they were people just like us…

14

inventive, clever, practical and well attuned to their environment (actually the latter statement does not reflect people today – but that’s another story!). Traces of their tools and evidence of occupation have been found at Ravenscliffe Cave: a cave in Shacklow Wood: Thor’s Fissure Cavern and cave: Elder Bush Cave and Ossum’s cave (both strictly speaking Staffordshire…but close!) and at Ash Tree Cave in Whitwell. Since these people left no permanent structures for us to find, and what they did leave behind has long since vanished into dust, it is entirely probable that they roamed at will across the Derbyshire countryside – we’ll just never know for sure. The hunter gatherer way of life continued in pretty much the same way until around 6000 years ago, when the last remaining land bridge with Europe was finally and permanently inundated by the rising sea, and it is around this time that we start to see a more settled, fixed way of living, the beginnings of agriculture and the construction of stone structures…cairns, standing stones and the like. Although I’d hoped to touch upon the multitude of such structures, many of which still remain visible in Derbyshire today, it is going to have to wait until the next article! These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. A Will is not enough: Why you should make your LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY now… Hopefully we all know the importance of making a suitable Will… it shows you care enough about what happens to your assets once you’ve died. But… shouldn’t you care just as much about keeping your assets and yourself safe while you are alive? If you are unable to manage your own affairs… a Will is not enough. The legal documents you need in place are called “Lasting Powers of Attorney”. They allow the people YOU choose now rather than someone appointed by the Court of Protection to deal with decisions in two key areas: your Property/Financial affairs and your Health/Welfare matters. There may come a time in your life when you are unable to manage your financial affairs or personal welfare, owing to some form of incapacity and you will need someone to act on your behalf. Even when we are young, we can find ourselves incapacitated owing to illness or injury and it can be invaluable having a trusted, reliable person who is able to manage your personal affairs and remove the anxiety of having unpaid bills, at a time when you most need peace of mind. Similarly, as we get older, the need for attorneys increases as we are more prone to illness and injuries. Sadly, sometimes people fall into the trap of thinking “I’ll get something sorted when I start feeling a bit iffy”… but an unexpected stroke, accident or illness can take anyone by surprise, regardless of their age or health.

Only by creating Lasting Powers of Attorney now ensures that if the worst were to happen, you can rest assured that both your financial affairs and personal welfare are in safe hands. It’s vital to understand that you cannot make a Lasting Power of Attorney once you’ve lost capacity – by then its too late and your family will face a lengthy and expensive court process to be able to deal with your affairs. •

Loss of mobility or illness can make it difficult to manage your affairs.

The prospect of unpaid bills can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety and delay someone’s recovery.

Even the young can encounter problems due to accident or illness.

Minor children could be taken into Care whilst Guardians are appointed.

An elderly relative losing capacity is difficult enough for loved ones to deal with, without the added worry that finances are becoming muddled.

This is information was provided by Haworth WardDrummond, owner of Egg & Nest Ltd. , a provider of professional estate planning services in accordance with the STEP Code of Conduct.

Winster Surgery Sunflower Competition Now in Full Bloom Raising money for Helen’s Trust

ROADSWEEPING

Voice Magazine’s chosen Partner Charity

Staff at the Winster Surgery near Matlock have been showcasing their gardening know-how by competing to grow the tallest sunflower and at the same time raise vital funds for a local charity.

ESTABLISHED OVER 25 YEARS Our Services include:

Every member of the team of 8 has joined in and the cheery display of flowers can be spotted around the surgery for everyone to enjoy. The sunflowers were measured when the first flower opened and though the lead has changed over the last month the winner of the competition is Surgery Manager Janet Andrews whose plant measured 2.02m.

• Septic Tank Emptying & Repairs • • • • •

£120 has been raised so far and will be donated to local charity Helen’s Trust- a charity which the surgery already supports with the sale of books and Christmas cards. Helen’s Trust gives people with terminal illness the choice to stay at home in the last stages of their illness.

Pictured are Jack Currell, Janet Andrews and Gill Morton with their amazing flowers.

Surgery Manager, and winner of the competition, Janet commente

‘The sunflower competition has certainly got everyone talking and raised the competitive spirit of all the staff here in Winster. Over the past few months since we started growing the flowers we have swapped lots of tips, including watering techniques and the use of horse manure to get the best results. It has been a fun competition but has also raised some vital funds for an important charity which has helped some of our patients and their families.’

Gardener’s Calendar

Most gardeners will, despite the fact that there’s still plenty growing, be thinking about spring. So wallflowers violas and winter pansies can go now into the ground along with bulbs. Remember daffs, crocus and narcissus can be planted now but tulips left until well into November to avoid tulip fire. A handy rule of thumb for most bulbs is to plant pretty deep - two to three times their height. Lilies can also be planted in containers now for next summer though it’s probably best to keep the pots in a cool frost-free place rather than outside if you anticipate frozen ground in your garden this winter.

If you have heucheras and they’re starting to look a bit sad it’s a good time to lift and divide, get rid of any rot or decay and replant in small clumps. Perennials such as crocosmia or peonies which produce leaves and flower stems from underground, can be cut back to soil level. But leave stems around penstemons to protect the crown when they start growing again.

There’s so many leaves dropping just now, it hardly seems worth the bother of raking them. However there are two good reasons to do this – if left to lie on grass they will get sludgy and damage your lawn, but also leaf mould is great mulch. Usually it can take up to a couple of years to get good leaf mould but you can speed things up by collecting and mowing before bagging. Broken down leaves decay much faster.

If you’ve been growing peas or beans this year the temptation is always to heave them out once they’ve finished producing. Just cut back to ground level instead – the roots are a great source of nitrogen which is great for renewing the soil.

Looking out for the Peak’s snakes..…..

Often overlooked across much of lowland parts of the Peak a silent reptile goes quietly about its business of hunting frogs. One of our only two ‘true snakes’, the Grass Snake (Natrix natrix), is a denizen of watery and wet places such as marshes, fens, streamsides and wet woodlands. A large female can be up to five feet long, and unlike the viviparous Adder which holds its eggs internally and so gives birth to live young, the Grass Snake lays eggs. In doing this, it comes to people’s attention as it seeks out warm sites like garden compost-heaps into which the eggs are placed. Heat from decomposition helps young snakes grow inside their shells until they are ready to burst out into the world. Although the Grass Snake is potentially quite big, it is of course non-venomous; the Adder (Vipera berus) being our only native poisonous reptile. In areas where wetlands survive, Grass Snakes are not uncommon but to see them you must walk quietly and close to watery habitats such as Cromford Canal for example. Grass snakes also occur in damp open woodland glades. They hunt in shallow water moving swiftly, sinuously, smoothly over and in the water showing off glorious green, yellow and gold markings. They weave in and out of the grassy vegetation in search of frogs and froglets, or perhaps a vole or two for lunch. Strong swimmers they will also take toads and small fish. In the meantime, look out for them along well-vegetated rivers and canals, and around lakes, ponds and marshes.

especially on warm days in spring when they have come out of hibernation. Sometimes if they have been disturbed, and so rudely awakened from their sunbathing slumbers, they will ‘hiss’ loudly. Favouring open areas along a footpath edge or even in the middle of a path they will soon slink back into the cover of leggy heather until potential danger has passed. On Big Moor I had good views of first a female close by the path edge and then a male (as shown in the picture). Mostly you don’t need to worry too much about Adders but just be sensible. Whilst the Adder or Viper is poisonous, the animal is generally harmless. They make a fair bit of noise if disturbed but that is to let you know they are there and so to avoid them. However, they are venomous, and although they rarely bite people, you need to take care if walking a dog. Keep a careful watch on your dog since an inquisitive pet thrusting its nose in is more like to get a nip and that can be bad. Let me know if you’ve seen any snakes locally.

However, up on the moors, walkers will frequently spot Adders, Professor Ian D. Rotherham of Sheffield Hallam University is a researcher, writer and broadcaster on wildlife and environmental issues in the Peak District and elsewhere.
