Kirkby Community Christmas Needs You! For those of us lucky enough to be spending Christmas with friends and family it is a joyous time but for some, who have no one, this can be the loneliest time of the year. Kirkby Community Christmas is run entirely by volunteers, who give their time to ensure fifty local people, who might otherwise be alone, get to enjoy Christmas day with others. All the guests receive free transport to and from the venue, a 3-course festive lunch, bingo, raffle and Christmas gift. This year will be the sixth year this event has been held BUT THEY NEED YOUR HELP! Donations are needed, of non-perishable foodstuffs, to create individual hampers for each of our fifty guests, and toiletries and chocolates etc, to give as gifts and raffle prizes. If there is any way you can help, through a donation or in any other way please contact Pip Forbes on 07757774555, or by email to forbespip@yahoo.co.uk. Bookings can also still be made if you wish to attend the event. Contact Pip for more information.

ONE STOP PARTY SHOP

DONNA’s TRAVEL PAGE

The Biggest Choice of Balloons and Party Items in Mansfield! A party simply isn’t a PARTY unless you’ve visited One Stop Party Shop for ALL your party needs!

Hi I’m Donna your Personal Travel Counsellor. Welcome to my monthly travel page… I’ll be using this space to offer advice, tips, personal experience and inspiration for your travels. This month I’m taking the opportunity to look back over 2019 and share a little of how travel has affected and benefitted me this year.

BIRTHDAYS - WEDDINGS ANNIVERSARIES - NEW BABIES HEN NIGHT - BABY SHOWER

It was a pretty big year for me personally, celebrating my 40th birthday in March. It seems like such a long time ago now!! It turns out turning 40 wasn’t as scary as I thought...

WHY NOT MAKE IT PERSONAL?

I’ve been very lucky again this year with some fantastic destinations ticked off my list, starting with the magical New York and crazy Las Vegas in February, somewhere that I have always wanted to visit having sold it many, many times over the years. It certainly did not disappoint. Then onto the most wonderful trip to Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York State in May. I got to do some fabulous activities including horse riding in the desert, white water rafting on the Delaware River, standing at the top of Rocky Steps in Philadelphia and visiting the iconic home of Woodstock, memories made for a lifetime! All finished off with a trip to visit the mesmerising country that is Israel which completely shattered any preconceptions I had about this mysterious country. Visiting ancient ruins built by King Herrod, experiencing everything that was Tel Aviv and learning so much about this gem of a destination was the ending to a year of amazing opportunity. It’s also been a year that brought many challenges for this industry that I love. Devastating weather events both here and around the world causing mass destruction, airline staff and pilot strikes, the uncertainty surrounding Brexit and how it will affect how we travel going forward and the terribly sad demise of a company close to my heart, having worked for them at the beginning of my career, the original pioneer of package travel, Thomas Cook. Whilst these events have sometimes been difficult to deal with they are always an opportunity to learn and grow for the future. With 2020 on the horizon I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to read my monthly page throughout 2019, I’ve loved writing them and look forward to continuing in the New Year. All that is left for me to do is wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. See you in 2020! So next time you are thinking about holidays and you’re considering your options don’t hesitate to get in touch on 01623 859150/07932 959752 or email me at donna.horner@travelcounsellors.com.

Rambles with RafFa lake and

5-mile circular walk from Watchwood via Calverton Colliery and Sansom Wood

We try and pick a particularly good walk for the Christmas edition as we know a lot of you like to take the opportunity to try somewhere different for a special walk at this time of year. We’re no different and have a tradition now of redoing one of the best walks of the year on Christmas Eve, before decamping to a good pub for some nice food and a few drinks with some good company, (furry and human ) This walk is definitely a contender for our Christmas outing. It begins at the Watchwood car park near Gravely Hollow. We head out, via the woods towards the site of the old Calverton Colliery, for some great views as we walk. From here we work back down through Watchwood to cross the A614 and loop back through Sansom Wood before making our way back to the start.

A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 2½ hours to complete. There are a couple of roads to walk alongside and cross so please take care, especially crossing the A614. Most of the walk is on paths and trails, so it may be muddy and will require appropriate footwear. And, as always, please follow the countryside code.

START: Watchwood Car Park, Gravelly Hollow, Calverton. (Access Gravelly Hollow from the B6386 Oxton Road, opposite Main Rd and near to Patchings Art Centre. NG14 6NU). 1. Exit the car park onto the road and turn left along the road. After a short distance turn left to pass through a gap and then, ignoring a marked footpath on your right, continue with woodland on your left and open views on your right. 2. After a short distance you will begin to

24

climb gently uphill. Keep ahead with woodland to your left and open views to your right and then at the top of the hill continue straight ahead on the same level for a short distance. After the footpath begins to descend you will reach a T junction of paths. At this point turn right and now continue downhill with a few trees and open views on your right and woodland on your left. 3. Continue for some distance, then follow the footpath around to the left, staying on

the edge of the woodland with a fence on your right. Upon reaching a T junction of footpaths ignore the footpath diagonal right, and turn sharp right to pass a telegraph pole on your left. Continue ahead, away from the woodland and keeping a fence on your right. 4. When the fence ends cross straight over a tarmac lane and continue along a footpath around to the left passing through some bushes. After you clear the bushes continue straight ahead to cross a wide-open space. Eventually you will reach a tarmac lane. Cross the lane diagonal right and then continue straight ahead with a fence over to your left. 5. After a short distance turn left onto a footpath, just prior to reaching a signboard on your left that reads ‘Calverton Colliery Tip’. Pass the ‘Calverton’ signboard on your right to continue along the footpath going uphill. After a short distance the footpath widens to a track then, near the top of the hill, pass through a open wooden gate. At the top of the hill you will reach a T junction of tracks. Turn right along the track going gently downhill, with views to your right. 6. Pass by a large wooden gate and then continue straight ahead for some distance until passing by a 2nd large wooden gate. Continue straight ahead for a long distance staying on the track to pass by OR through 3 more large wooden gates. After the 5th of these gates after some distance and when the track begins to curl to the left, turn right along a track going downhill. 7. At the bottom of the hill pass a sign board on your left and by a large metal gate. After a short distance, upon reaching a T junction of tracks with woodland directly ahead of you turn right to walk along a well laid track. After a short distance the track curls around to the right. Ignore two footpaths to your left to continue along the track going downhill. At the bottom of the hill and just before the track

begins to climb again, turn left onto a footpath going downhill. 8. Continue walking along this path until you pass by a metal gate and to a road. Cross straight over the road and then turn left. Walk along the road for a short distance and then turn right onto a footpath marked for ‘Papplewick’. Continue ahead with a hedge on your right and a fence and open views on your left. When the fence ends continue ahead with a hedge on your right. 9. Walk ahead until reaching some woodland. Now continue along the edge of the woodland, keeping a fence on your left. Continue until you can go no further and follow the footpath to the right, away from the fence and towards the trees. Immediately you will come to a T junction of paths. Turn left and now continue straight ahead along a footpath through woodland. Ignore a fork to the left and keep ahead to pass under some power lines. 10. Continue until reaching a track. Ignore the path to the left and continue ahead along the track going downhill. After some distance pass by a metal gate and to a road. Turn left along the road for a very short distance and then turn left again to continue along a track going through woodland. Continue along the track as it turns into a tarmac lane until reaching a road.

11. Turn left along the road and after a short distance cross over the road to continue on the footpath on the opposite side. Continue until reaching a T junction with a main road. Cross straight over the main road to pass through a gap in a fence and make your way Grave ley around to the left to Hollow a tarmac road. Walk along the tarmac road Calverto Sanso until reaching the car m wood Wa t park on your left. on t er lv ery Ca olli C

George has brought some Christmas spirit back from north of the border... which spirit it is I’ll let you decide

George hears tales of how some of our neighbours, from north of the Border, truly promote the spirit of Christmas

You’ll recall from your last edition of Voice Magazine how George had taken time out from listening to the outlandish and often bizarre thoughts of the general public and had gone to visit his old pal up in Drumnadrochit. Both George and his wife had a relaxing few days and were warmly and generously treated by Hamish and Morag MacDonald. This was no surprise to George as he knew that the old ‘music hall’ stereotype of Scots being tighter than a ........(go on, you can fill that in yourself!) was, from his experience, a total myth. However, he was left with second thoughts when Hamish gave an insight into some of the regulars in the bar of the Drumnadrochit Hotel. “See thon Wullie over there? asked Hamish. “On 20th December last year, he told us that he’d just phoned his daughter Fiona, who was working for a homeless charity in London, to tell her that he’d had enough of her mother’s cruel behaviour and was going to divorce her in the New Year. Apparently, she got awfy emotional and said something like, ‘Ach Da, ye cannae dae that. No at this time ‘o year. Ah’ll pack a bag and get up there the morn. Dinnae dae anything till Ah get there!’ At the time, the bar, packed with Wullie’s friends, fell silent and looked at him in astonishment. “Yir no serious are ye? asked Dougie the local postie.

Gardener’s Calendar

We’re mostly heading towards the winter protection zone now in the garden. Time to bubble wrap container pots which can also go up on “feet” if there’s a risk of waterlogging. Cut roses in wind-exposed plots back to a third of their height to stop wind rock which damages roots. Create a grease layer – there’s loads of makes on the market – to prevent wingless female fruit moths climbing fruit trees and laying their eggs in the branches and impacting on next year’s crop. Between now and February is a good time to shape and prune apple and pear trees – but not plums which are liable to crop damaging silver leaf damage if pruned at the wrong time of year.

Don’t worry overmuch about fungi appearing in beds or lawns. People sometimes fear they are signs of the dreaded honey fungus. But this destructive fungus appears at the base of affected plants and shrubs rather than randomly across a garden and you will probably have already spotted problems with the plant. In some cases bunches of honey coloured toadstools briefly pop up on infected stumps. But the plant will also be looking sick, particularly in the upper reaches as roots are killed off by the fungus. The most obvious sign is a white sheet of fine fungal growth between the wood and bark at ground level so you need to peel bark back there if you have suspicions. The only way to eradicate it is to heave the plant or bush out and destroy the roots and stump – don’t put it on the compost heap!

COOPER’S CORNER Sometimes a story arises in football that has repercussions beyond the sport. Was Richard Keogh treated unfairly, if you think not then maybe you would argue the others players should have been punished a lot more severely? Here’s our Barry with his thoughts on the matter.

As usual with my monthly column, I get a note from the editor chasing me because I’m usually about a week over deadline. Luckily for me, and for her, it’s generated an extra few hours to write about a topic which has dominated the local media in recent weeks. On the evening of September 24, an incident happened which changed the lives, and careers of three Derby County players forever. Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence both crashed their motor vehicles on the A6 between Duffield and Allestree. In the back of Lawrence’s vehicle was Rams Club Captain Richard Keogh, who was knocked unconscious by the impact of the collision – he was also left in the car as the other two scarpered like scolded dogs. Now it’s captain Keogh who (at the time of writing) has been sacked by the club he served with distinction for seven years amid suggestions he refused to agree a new contract on reduced terms – his current one expires next summer, and he’s out injured for at least another year owing to the injuries sustained in the crash in which he was a passenger. I’m no employment lawyer, I’m merely a football hack giving his opinion on a situation which is rather bleak, and could have been much more serious than it’s turned out to be – and that’s not to trivialise a really bad situation. I do wonder had Keogh not been in his 30s, at the end of his contract and lacking any resale value, had the situation been handled differently? Tom Lawrence is a valuable asset while Mason Bennett deemed a talented youngster have been retained.

The whole fiasco has been a PR disaster for Derby County, and I’m sure if Mel Morris could turn the clock back a little while, he’d do so in a heartbeat. Probably predating spygate last season, on recollection. A team bonding exercise went badly wrong and a group of their players acted poorly, and since, things have been increasingly tough for the club – performances on the pitch haven’t helped matters. But to treat Keogh like they have done leaves a sour taste, he deserved better or at the very least, he deserved consistent treatment in line with the other pair, who will carry convictions in the eyes of the law. After all, he was only a passenger. Yes, he shouldn’t have clambered into Tom Lawrence’s car knowing copious amounts of alcohol had been consumed and yes, he probably should have taken his captain’s role more seriously in doing his best to ensure the situation didn’t arise – but that’s probably as far as it goes. Keogh wasn’t the driver, he wasn’t the one drinkdriving and he wasn’t the one that could have killed himself or others through his reprehensible behaviour. The other pair could have had blood on their hands, yet it is Keogh who has paid for the incident with his career. A bloke has lost his career because of the disgraceful behaviour of others, and while clearly far from innocent in his own part, you’d be surprised if this was the last we heard of it.
