Kirkby Community Craft Bombing A fabulous new craft bombing installation has been situated outside Ashfield District Council Offices. This year’s community Christmas tree is a culmination of six months hard work and has been created by Claire Lilley from The Artful Buttoner, Wool & Haberdshery shop along with the Kirkby Craft Bombers and members of the community who came together to crochet the granny squares. After Christmas, when the tree is taken down, the squares will be washed, dried and then sewn together by volunteers to create blankets which will be donated to The Beacon, a project which supports homeless people in Mansfield. The project has been supported by Ashfield District Council and Everyone Active. The team also created the amazing poppy cascades (using over 6,000 poppies) which were on display in the run up to Rememberance Day.

DONNA’s TRAVEL PAGE Hi I’m Donna your Personal Travel Counsellor. Welcome to my monthly travel page… I’ll be using this space to offer advice, tips, personal experience and inspiration for your travels. I’d like to start by saying I hope that you had a great Christmas and New Year! January is often a dreary, grey month after the bright lights and excitement of Christmas, which is why it is ALWAYS the busiest month in the travel industry… people need something else to look forward to once Christmas has gone. You may not realise it but, as creatures of habit, we tend to do the same things, at the same time, every year. That includes booking our much looked forward to annual getaway. With a lot of holidays now on sale until October 2021 and lots of great offers for booking early it’s the perfect pick me up you need at this time of year. Planning ahead is by far the best thing to do when booking a holiday. People often think that ‘late deals’, as they used to be known, still exist, and if you can travel anytime and have no restrictions then there are definitely deals to be had. However, if you are looking at travelling at peak times, during childrens school holidays, Christmas etc then you will always find the best prices by booking in advance. When booking something so far in advance it’s also worth considering your holiday insurance at the time of booking as many people make the mistake of waiting until closer to the time of travel to cover their arrangements. This leaves them open to large financial losses in the event something happens to stop them traveling as planned. Travel Insurance is just as important as the holiday itself. It covers you for all number of reasons not just medical cover whilst away, but if you must cancel for an insurable reason before you travel, your luggage and belongings whilst away and delays during travel to name a few. After the awful collapse of Thomas Cook in September it’s also worth making sure that what you are booking is ATOL protected. Financial protection is extremely important to consider when booking a holiday. You should always receive an ATOL certificate for protected arrangements as soon as you book. All of the above will add up to a great value, well protected holiday or trip in 2020! So next time you are thinking about holidays and you’re considering your options don’t hesitate to get in touch on 01623 859150/07932 959752 or email me at donna.horner@travelcounsellors.com.

Book Review

Margaret Atwood – The Testaments

Reading a sequel can be a bit daunting. Especially when there’s been a 34 year gap between books and the original is as famous and highly regarded as Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. But fear not. The Testaments is a superb follow-up. Without giving anything away, it manages to give hope to a story which has seemed unremittingly bleak. And of course great glimpses into the workings of the crooked wood of humanity. Atwood has said that most of the inspiration for the story has been everything readers wrote to her about the original book, everything that we wanted to know about Gilead, everything that we thought Gilead reflected in the world. The book seems particularly relevant in this time of Me Too, Fake News and the frenetic pace of our lives and Atwood says the other part of her inspiration is the world we have been living in. As always she writes beautifully, jumping between three witness accounts which in the end begin to merge into one very satisfying ending. The questions about Gilead, about its place in the world and how it could exist in our world now make sense. A worthy Booker prize winner and a really good read.

Make some financial resolutions We have to admit to our trousers being a little tighter than we’d like thanks to over indulging during the festive season but like so many we’re starting 2020 with a list of resolutions. Whether we’re still on target with them in a couple of months, time will tell!

the tax year ending 2020, as you still have time to make the necessary changes. Don’t leave it too late to take advantage of these and other allowances you could be entitled to. It won’t be long before April is here so it’s best to plan now.

When it comes to new year resolutions Whatever your financial needs for the year though we do think this is an ideal time to also ahead, start 2020 by having a conversation take stock of finances. Taking some time out with us and let’s hit those targets full on! to identify what your financial goals are for both the next 12 months and longer term is essential. Are you on the best mortgage deal possible? Could your savings be better manged? Will your current pension planning really meet your needs in retirement? Do you have the right level of critical illness and life protection in place for your family?

As far as resolutions go reviewing finances may not be the most exciting but it could be life changing. Discuss what your financial aspirations are as a family and you could make a significant difference to your future. At Hampshire Hill we work with our clients to help them achieve their financial goals. The process begins with us working through some carefully selected questions so we can all agree on what their financial targets are. We then go away and come up with suggestions which are personally suited to their individual needs. It really is a highly tailored approach which starts with a simple conversation.

“Make 2020 the year you take control of your finances. It starts with a simple conversation and could put you on the road to prosperity” Richard Hampshire

P.S. Don’t forget that January 31st is the Now is also the time to consider whether you deadline for filing your self-assessment tax can make better use of your ISA allowance for return; you don’t want to be hit by a penalty!

5-mile circular walk from South Wingfield via Wingfield Manor

His month we are bringing you a walk that originally came to us from the Pentrich and South Wingfield Revolution Group. We have adapted the walk slightly so have provided our own wording but if you want the original please visit www.pentrichrevolution.org.uk where there is a ton of interesting information about the revolution along with more walks. The walk begins in South Wingfield and takes you off uphill in the direction of Park Head before turning across country towards Fritchley making use of some excellent byways. The walk then loops round back towards South Wignfield, via Wingfield Manor.

A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 2½ hours to complete. There are a couple of roads to walk alongside and cross so please take care. Most of the walk is on paths and trails, so it may be muddy and will require appropriate footwear. And, as always, please follow the countryside code.

Name:

Hello friends, my name is Dancer and I am a long way from home with Santa and his sleigh :( I have been here at Jerry Greens for a while now, and am starting to wonder why no one has come forward to adopt me. I am a loveable, sweet natured girlie with a cheeky side to keep you smiling. I would love to find my forever family in a home with people who will buy me squeaky toys and lots of dog treats for the big day - and maybe even share some of their roast dinner with me! I can live with adults and would prefer to be the only pet for now. I would love a home with company.

If a clue cannot be answered then the beginning letter of the next answer will be the last letter of the previously unknown answer. The answers spiral round to finish at the “B in the centre of the hive. The clues are numbered in order to go round the hive and the number of letters in each answer is given in brackets.

Mike’us sings M

Moving on with our ‘best of Mike’s Musings’ we bring you further up to date by introducing the loveable rogue George. A man perfectly suited to our current troubled political times with his ear to the ground and a head full of bright ideas!

Improving Quality of Life

UCIP - it’s a hard ‘C’ to ironically make the party sound like the pressure group/political party that helped decide this country’s immediate fate and then......... promptly disappeared to leave us to sort out the mess - Executive Committee recently asked George to ‘get out onto the streets’ and canvass opinion to discover what issues are currently troubling the electorate. After a day pestering shoppers and passers-by’s on Sutton High Street, here are (and this is only the start) his findings. One married couple, who gave their names as Harold and Mildred, were happy to get a few things off their chest. “I hate it when, whilst sitting in the theatre minutes before a performance is about to begin, someone turns up and the whole row has to get up, shift bags, contort their body and generally be inconvenienced to accommodate an inconsiderate latecomer” said Mildred.

Wills • Probate • Powers of Attorney JH Legal Ltd are looking for a

PT Legal Secretary 14-21 hours based on 2-3 days per week

We have an exciting opportunity for the right person to join our friendly and professional team, operating out of our offices in South Normanton. We are looking for someone who is ambitious and driven and recognises the opportunity to learn, and play an intergral role in the growth of the Company. The right person will be flexible in their approach, showing their willingness to work as part of a small but effective team. The individual must have exemplary attention to detail and show the ability to take instruction and complete work to an excellent standard. They will be friendly and customer orientated with the confidence to work on their own initiative.

Harold added that he had the same issue with those attending a rugby union, cricket or other such like sporting event – apart from football - who think that it is socially acceptable to sink half a dozen pints. That would be OK, he maintained, were it not for the fact that during the game they then forcefully brush their way past other spectators who are trying to watch the action, as weak bladders give rise to an overwhelming desire to visit the toilet. To compound matters, they then return with another half dozen pints and repeat the process. Harold and Mildred felt that if something could be done to abolish these tiresome practices, their lives would be so much richer and they looked imploringly at George hoping that he could come up with an answer. Indeed he has!

Once in power UCIP would introduce a Bill requiring all places of entertainment to operate an airport style boarding pass system. Fifteen minutes before the performance is scheduled to start, pre-boarding would begin and at regular intervals thereafter, those with specific row/ticket numbers would be asked to ‘come forward’ and take their seats. Any punter failing to follow these reasonable instructions would be denied entry until the interval. We’ve been in touch with Mildred and she is a) happy with the proposal and b) is now a committed UCIP supporter. As for inconvenience caused by excessive drinking at sporting events, George’s first thought was to insist that clubs enquire at the time of sale of tickets if weak bladders might be an issue and to then allocate seats at the end of a row/aisle accordingly. Thinking that this might not be a popular measure he came up with a suggestion that, with a bit of self-policing, sporting crowds could probably manage themselves. As a result when a spectator, not sitting by the aisle, gets up to leave the sporting arena whilst the action is taking place, UCIP government advice would be for every other person on that row to move to his/her right or left as appropriate, and take up the vacant seat. When the ‘offender’ returns, suitably relieved and/or restocked with drink, they would have to sit at the end. Sorry, no room for a quiz this month as well but, as I’m sure you’ll appreciate, these are very important issues!!

Legal experience is preferred in this role. However, good computer and typing skills are essential. Access to vehicle are an advantage

Closing date for applications is Friday 31st January 2020. Interviews will begin week commencing 17th February 2020

This can seem like a daunting time of year for us gardeners, but there are things to do at a practical level – and of course you can start reading the plant catalogues to see what to try this year. Outside, remove old hellebore leaves so you can see the new growth and the bobbing flowers as they emerge. You can also prune rose bushes if you haven’t done so already. They’re still dormant so don’t mind the invasion. Cut just above a bud on a slant so rain doesn’t pool on the cut.

If you do venture across grass, try to avoid doing so when it’s frosty as this can scorch and leave brown marks. Lawns can get waterlogged and compacted by rain right now, so if that’s the case, spike them and brush in sharp sand and compost to help the roots stay healthy.

r

Watch that pots under eaves or right against the house haven’t dried out or got compacted by rain dropping from roofs. Grit on the surface helps retain moisture and stops clumping. Stripped branches of Christmas trees make good support sticks for the growing season or they can be shredded for mulch.

TOP TIP!

Houseplants may be suffering a bit with central heating which dries the air. Misting helps. Small misting bottles are available everywhere, you don’t need anything expensive. 06/11/2018 18:16

The economic boost that Nottingham Forest’s ground redevelopment plans are clear but will it strengthen their hand when competing to return back to the top of the football pyramid? Here’s our Barry with his thoughts... Redevelopment of Nottingham Forest’s City Ground took a step closer recently after the club submitted plans to Rushcliffe Borough Council for approval. There will be various facets to the project which will see the whole ground improved over time and raised to a level not seen at Forest before, and it will transform the city in many ways. Owner Evangelos Marinakis has earmarked around £100m for the project which will start by knocking down the current Main Stand and constructing a brand new, 10,000 seat stand in its place to help the club create a ‘worldclass’ environment which they hope will see Premier League football before too long. Development of the City Ground has been needed for a couple of decades now, with the most recent addition coming ahead of Euro 96 when the Trent End was built, and the Main Stand, or Peter Taylor Stand as it was renamed a couple of years ago has been untouched since being rebuilt after the 1968 fire.

Domestic Skip hire is available from Mansfield through to the outskirts of Nottingham city. cit

Rarely can I remember a time when one single person invested such huge sums of money into the city, and it reinforces Marinakis’, also the owner of Greek giants Olympiacos longterm commitment to both the club and area which at a time of sweeping cutbacks, can only be a positive. Not only will a brand new, state of the art venue attract more supporters, and potentially new arrivals in the dressing room, it will also have a positive impact on local businesses and the employment market. Numerous new jobs will be made available once the new stand, complete with museum, shop and upgraded facilities is finished, there’s also the ones generate in the construction of the stand, much of which will be done off-site given the City Ground’s challenging urban location.

We have ADR registered drivers, scrap metals licence, hire and reward for grab and hook loader skip haulage.

At last it feels like Forest off the pitch are moving in the pitch and 2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year, here’s hoping Sabri Lamouchi’s playing squad can follow suit.

It’s been well-documented that Forest have missed out on huge finances to their East Midlands’ rivals Derby County and Leicester City when it comes to hospitality income, and with the new Peter Taylor Stand, things are about to change – they’ll be able to compete. Draycotts Kia
