As another decade begins, we are compelled to look back on what has been and it’s important that we reflect and learn from it, in order to grow and improve for the future. Personally speaking, I’m pretty keen on this philosophy and I always try and stand by it – particularly at the start of the year.

guys asked for more content and we’re listening… keep it coming as we are loving the community interaction with you guys! Right, I’m off to sharpen my axes, see you next month!

Lots of changes are happening as a country and across the planet and whether you agree with the changes or not, they will happen come what may and I think it is important that we use our voices to try and leave this world a better place than how we found it.

Happy Reading,

We have lost, to some degree, a sense of community as ‘I’ takes precedence over everything and for me, whilst we grow technologically speaking, we lose on a human level. Believe it or not, this was one of the driving forces for me starting the magazines 10 years ago… it certainly wasn’t the money and the easy lifestyle that I enjoy! #eyeroll. For me, I saw that people were starting to anonymously post of FB and the like – “does anyone know…?, “where can I find…?”, “company X is rubbish, don’t use them.” From this, I could see that people didn’t know what events were happening locally, who to go to when they had an issue and, in more cases than I liked, had the power to destroy a good hardworking business – sometimes rightly, but more often than not, wrongly.

PS: Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

Voice was always intended to be exactly that, one place to include events, listings, news about groups and shout about the local advertisers that I found trustworthy – If I can confirm that we have a bad egg, legitimately – they do not advertise with us anymore. Anyhoo, maybe I’m just being nostalgic because it’s been 10 years or because it’s my birthday this month but either way – it got me thinking about what the next 10 years will bring?! In other news, I’m off to see the Sheffield Steelers for my Birthday and to throw some axes #excited and TA DAH, we’ve got an exclusive interview with Dancing on Ice professional, Mark Hanretty. What a fantastic guy, who lives locally and I’m certainly expecting some local solidarity to kick in and show him our support on the phone lines on Sunday night! You

Aiming For Top Marks! VOICE MAGAZINES EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW! We managed to grab a chat with professional skater and Dancing on Ice star Mark Hanretty on his amazing career and what its been like working with Paralympic track champion Libby Clegg. How did you first get into skating? I started skating when I was 9 years old at Paisley Ice Rink near where I lived, after watching Torvill & Dean return to the ice in 1994. I became absolutely obsessed! You now live in Ashfield, why did you move here and what do you love about the area? I was training between Sheffield, Nottingham and the USA for many years, and whilst training in Sheffield I met my beautiful wife Kathy. I moved to Ashfield to be close to my in-laws. I’ve been really impressed with the sense of community and appreciate being part of that community, as well as the local school which was important for my two children. How have you adapted your training with Libby compared to your previous Dancing on Ice partners? When I first found out I was partnered with Libby I was worried about how the process would be, knowing it was going to be an incredibly difficult challenge. And of course it is difficult but it’s made much easier by Libby being so hard working and eager to improve. We share an athletes mentality and a mutual appreciation for hard work, so I just had to develop a different way of verbalising the routines without her actually being able to see the moves. There’s no doubt I’ve learnt a lot more about myself as a result of working with Libby as well as it being a really humbling experience and makes me appreciate that we, having all our senses, shouldn’t really be complaining about anything. How many hours a week do you train for each performance/routine? Normally training would last 2 hours a day but with Libby we tend to train for about 3-4 hours a day because it takes longer to verbalise the routines with her. It can be quite tricky as we are both parents,

she is also in training for the Paralympics later this year and ice time isn’t always available, so it can be a challenge to fit the hours in but we’re doing our best. What’s it like working with skating royalty Torvill & Dean? Really surreal as obviously they are the reason I started out in the sport! Its strange how my life path has mapped out this way – they are incredibly nice people and we are great friends. The aerial performance you did on this year’s opening show was incredible! How did you get into this and incorporating it into a skating routine? I’ve been doing aeriel work for a few years now. It started as a lot of skaters perform all over the world for months at a time and I didn’t want to leave my wife and children for that long. By learning the aeriel work you tend to get shorter, one off contracts so I can work without having to be away too long.

What has been your proudest skating moment? It’s so hard to pick just one as I’ve done so many amazing things and travelled all over the world to compete and to perform. Skating has taken me to North Korea for a competition which was an amazing experience. I’ve also performed for Sting and his family when he had an ice rink built at his home at Christmas. I’ve performed at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games and with Coldplay as they played live and I skated. I’m so lucky that my job is my passion and I can provide for my family doing something I love.

A 600-page novel about trees – and nine people whose lives are intertwined with them – would seem an odd subject for rave reviews. But The Overstory, by American writer Richard Powers, is a stunner. It’s one of those rare books that changes the way you look at things around you and at a time when we are getting increasingly nervous about climate change, it’s right on the button. There’s mind boggling stuff, born out by scientific fact – that trees communicate, that they take care of each other, that they sense the presence of other nearby life and react to it, that they save resources in times of stress and warn their kin and send out signals to wasps to come and save them from attacks. They produce oxygen. They consume carbon dioxide, they’re at the heart of the things that make our planet work. And yet humans, the “superior” species, cuts them down, clears vast areas of forest to produce palm oil or for economic and housing development or even concretes over them to provide parking space - completely ignoring the affect this will have. But this isn’t simply a story for ecologists. It’s a tale told through people’s lives. It’s beautiful and brilliant and mind-opening, thoughtful and heart-breaking and it wears its encyclopaedic knowledge lightly, so it whizzes along. You can’t be bored by it. And despite the part that humankind plays in the plot, it is wonderfully to our flawed species, our foibles, but also Roof our abilityRepairs to be so Bargeboards - generous Cladding - Guttering - Minor much more. If you’re going to read one book this year, this is the one.

The hidden costs of care The cost of care has been a hot topic for some time now and we understand why it can be daunting. When looking at the future it is however something which needs to be considered and, like all things financial, the sooner the better! With an aging population it is more and more likely that you or a family member will need to use a care home in later life. It’s never easy, usually fraught with emotion, and often comes at a difficult time with perhaps the onset of dementia or other illnesses being the catalyst for the hard decision. Choosing the right care home to look after your loved one is your priority and it shouldn’t come down to a question of cost, but finances do have to play their part. The Care Act 2014 is the detailed legislation covering all elements of care, including the financial side of things, and obviously in this article we’re unable to mention all the strands of such complicated regulation. To summarise though, at present if you have savings of over £23,500 you are expected to meet part or all of the care home costs. With care homes locally charging anywhere from £600 to £800 a week, this could cost up to £40,000 a year. The average stay in a care home is 3 years, so we’re talking about huge sums of money.

There are however options open to you as long as you take action many years before the need for care arises. Discretionary trusts, prudent use of life policies and transferring assets to a loved one are all potentially worth considering. The use of trusts is becoming more commonplace as people realise that protective control of an asset can be maintained. Once viewed as a tool only used by the wealthy they’re now being explored by far more families who are keen to minimise the possible impact of care home fees in the future. You also need to make sure you’re Many argue that there’s a feeling of being considering inheritance tax obligations, lasting penalised for having been a prudent saver and power of attorney and your will as early as you others counter argue with the point that those can. who can afford to pay for care, should. Whatever your stance, if you are paying for We know this is a subject many families don’t care you could be in the position of selling like to discuss, it’s too emotive a topic. All we’ll your family home to meet the costs involved. say on the matter is that the legislation is not clear cut, don’t put off the conversation just It’s no good looking at ‘giving away’ your savings to family or loved ones to avoid paying because it won’t be an easy one. Top 10 First Aid Tips from

Scarsdale Vets

1.

Accidents can happen at any time, it is important to be prepared for any eventuality. Be prepared! Create or purchase a first aid kit.

2.

First Aid is precisely that. They’re the first steps to providing aid for your pet, the aim is to prevent damage, not cause it.

3.

If a pet becomes distressed, STOP.

4.

Always follow up any administration of first aid with a check-up with your vet.

5.

Never give human medicines to animals.

6.

Ensure the safety of yourself and others around you. Make sure you keep calm and assess the situation.

7.

Distressed or injured animals may demonstrate behavioural traits not usually associated with them so speak quietly and reassuringly to your pet.

8.

Move slowly to prevent any further distress and stay in view of your pet.

9.

Always phone ahead and contact your vet as soon as possible.

10. Do not try to manage serious situations on your own.

Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and

6-mile circular from Edwinstowe via the Major Oak

A moderate walk for you and your dog! This walk is fairly flat and should take around 2½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, with some possibly muddy and uneven sections. There are a few sections of road, so take plenty of care.

This month we’re bringing the first of a series of ‘classic’ walks. We have been through our huge back catalogue of Rafa’s Rambles and picked out the very best walks from the past decade. We are re-walking and updating each of the Rambles as we go. This month we have picked the ‘Major Oak’ walk, which we first featured back in July 2016. The Major Oak is a fantastic sight to see and well worth the walk in itself but I picked this walk because it is the perfect combination of trails, trees & water which the dogs love along with a nice coffee and cake stop for us! Rafa wasn’t able to go on the walk last time as he was recovering from an operation on his leg to repair a snapped cruciate ligament in his knee. So, he was delighted to come this time and was joined by his deputy, Flake, who was only a twinkle in his daddy’s eye when we last did this walk.

2.

Pass through the gap and onto a lane. Turn left along the lane and continue until the lane bears sharp right. Continue around to the right and now continue straight ahead with a hedge on your right.

3.

Continue until you reach some trees and then pass by a yellow marker post on your right. Continue straight ahead with trees on your left and open fields on your right.

4.

After some time you will reach a T junction with a lane. Turn right and go gently uphill along the lane. At the top of the hill pass some stables on your left and then ‘The Archway House’ on your right. After, continue straight along the lane for some distance until reaching a main road.

8.

Cross the road diagonal left, pass through a gap and then turn immediately right along a trail signposted for ‘Sherwood Forest’. For a short distance the trail runs parallel with the road and then a very short 9. distance after passing over a crossroads of paths the trail bends sharp to the left. Follow the trail around to the left and then continue for some distance and pass over a crossroads of paths signposted for ‘bridleway’ and ‘Sherwood Forest’.

10.

Continue straight to the top of a hill and then at a crossroads of footpaths turn right signposted for ‘Visitor Centre’. Ignoring all other footpaths to the left and right continue for a long distance following 11. the signs for ‘Major Oak’. Upon reaching a T junction of paths turn right and pass by The Major Oak on your left. Follow this path staying close to a wooden fence on your left. Continue ahead along the path, following 12. From the car park take the tarmac path heading towards a recreation ground and passing by a sign board on your left reading ‘Jubilee Park’. Continue straight to pass through a small car park and onto a road. Turn left along the road until reaching a T junction with a main road. Turn right along the main road and continue straight ahead to pass through a set of traffic lights onto Edwinstowe High Street. Continue straight along the road for some distance until crossing over a river bridge. A short distance after the bridge turn right along ‘Mill Road’. Continue along Mill Road for some distance and then just prior to a ‘national speed limits’ sign and railway bridge turn right along a signposted ‘Bridleway’. Continue along the bridleway with a river on your right. After some distance cross over a wooden river bridge and then continue straight ahead until reaching a hedgerow directly in front of you. At this point turn right along a lane and continue with the hedge on your left. After a very short distance the lane bends sharp to the left. Mike’us sings M

Every family has a ‘Mildred’, they’re at every Family event yet no-one ever remembers inviting them. If you can’t think who it is in your family you should probably be worried… as it might be you!

George enjoyed a lovely, albeit perplexing, family Christmas George, UCIP’s intrepid People’s Champion, comes from a big family and every year there is a gathering of the ‘clan’ at the local community centre. Following Zoe’s (his niece) wedding earlier in 2019, there was a newcomer to this annual event. Zoe’s new mother-in-law, Mildred, came over from Newton for the party, and as George had discovered at the wedding, she was a very interesting woman with a quirky view on a number of topics. Mildred, knowing how George had been researching the ways in which ordinary people would like to improve the world, button-holed him. Although, he is by nature a good listener, George found it difficult to keep track of the questions his new ‘friend’ was asking him to solve. Here’s a selection:•

Why, when you join the shortest queue at the supermarket check-out, do you invariably find that the customer in front initially appears to have forgotten that the goods actually need to be paid for. They then spend so long checking every pocket in their coat and every section of their wallet/purse before finding either cash or credit card that the chap who was in the longer queue before you is now in the car park loading his car?

Why do washing machines have so many programmes when everyone just uses the one?

Why, when I’m taking the grandchildren to school does one of them inevitably step in the deposit recently left by a local dog? NB – as I’m sure

most people are aware, Newton is officially the dog turd capital of Bolsover District! •

Why do men always say that they make a ‘mean chilli’ when it’s just bolognese with added kidney beans?

Why is it that temporary traffic lights always change to red when I’m just 25 yards away. I then find that it is one of these ‘four way’ set-ups that mean I’ve got enough time to check the contents of the glove compartment and read a couple of chapters of my book before they change back to green?

When you drop a piece of toast covered in lovely butter and tangy marmalade, why is it always that side that hits the floor first?

If a short person and a tall person go for a walk, because of the little legs of the former, does he/ she walk further than the one with the long legs even though they’ve covered the same distance?

Is it harder to carry a heavy package up an upescalator than carrying it down a down-escalator?

Well, as you can imagine, George didn’t have an answer for any of these, but he suddenly ‘remembered’ that his wife had a migraine and he’d better go to see how she was. As he left Mildred, promising to see ‘what he could do’, he was heard muttering under his breath that he hoped Zoe would forget to invite her mother-inlaw to next year’s ‘do’.

Gardener’s Calendar

It may not be a very inviting idea, but turning over the soil in plant or veg beds while it’s still cold is a good plan. It exposes pests to frosts and birds and other predators and also helps kill off the roots of weeds. And just think of the exercise! You can start mulching, particularly where bulbs are growing, but do try to remove weeds first otherwise you are simply providing a better growing environment for them. If you want to get a head start on preparing your soil for veg growing you can warm up the soil by covering rows with fleece or polythene or individual cloches.

r

Indoors, if you have either a warm greenhouse or windowsill you can plant seeds of early starters such as pelargoniums or begonias. They take about two weeks to germinate so will be emerging around the time light levels start to improve. Fruit trees and canes can be planted now if the soil is not frozen, and this is your last chance to winter prune apples, pears and citrus trees. Prune newly planted raspberry canes back to twelve inches.

The Transfer Window ‘slammed’ shut again at the end of January. Was your club a ‘winner’ or a ‘loser’ or is it all just a farce that’s had it’s time and needs consigning to room 101? Here’s our Barry with his thoughts‌ The transfer window is a strange time of the season. A period where media organisations go into full on overdrive to fuel the flames of speculation, which fans up and down the land lap up in their droves. Fans, literally, can’t seem to get enough. The sheer amount of audience data tells us this, the January window performs greater than any other month of the year, frankly, and it is remarkable. Transfer stories generate more interest on a consistent basis than any other type of football-related story, and as journalists, we just can’t create enough. But what’s it all about? Why are fans so desperate to read about links to players the world over, whether speculation has a foundation or not? There seems an increased pressure on clubs to spend, spend, spend in the vain hope their club will be successful, but then moan when they end up with an over-inflated squad full of average players, a hefty wage bill and facing financial penalties imposed on them by the Football League. And once that player signs, it’s almost like he’s forgotten and fans are onto the next. It’s almost like the spoilt kid at Christmas to coin one analogy. One present gets opened and before they’ve finished ripping the paper off

their expensive iPad, their eyes are onto the next and that one is cast asunder. I do find it a strange mentality, but it’s one that is the currency of the national and local media in this digital age. Maybe fans’ attitudes are impacted by the way the media, and in particular the pay-tv media over-egg the transfer window and in particular, transfer deadline day, but at the heart of this bloodbath is the players. Players who have lives, who have families, friends, children in schools and may be settled in the areas they reside. A player who has represented three of the East Midlands’ biggest clubs once described being made to feel like a piece of meat in the transfer window, and it’s hard not to feel for them. Not all players earn silly money, some are just normal, down to earth blokes trying to be settled and earn a good living. I feel like the transfer window has been outgrown, and now business should revert to how it used to be. If you want to sign a player in November, you can. Go and do it. It might even help the lower league clubs who rely so heavily on transfer income. It may also stop this rather weird, obsession for news condensed down into a crazy fourweek period after Christmas.
