So, last month I mentioned my birthday celebrations and wow, wasn’t it an awesome birthday! If you haven’t already, I would recommend trying axe throwing! It’s only a bit scary on occasions (they are pretty sharp and the different throwing techniques saw one of our party take a chunk out of his top!) but a great stress reliever and shed loads of fun for people of all ages! As a second super treat, I got to visit the Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey Team. Now, I hadn’t even been to Ice Hockey at all until last year and now I am a total fan. Again, this is a great day out for all the family and I can’t stress enough how easy this fast paced, high adrenaline, testosterone filled game is to get enthralled and enveloped in, to the point that you can’t wait for the next weeks game so that you can go and enjoy it all over again! I’m hopeful that next season we’re going to work with the Steelers a little closer and be able to offer tickets and all sorts for our fab readers and like I say, it is a prize worth winning! Speaking of prizes worth winning….(seamless as ever!)….check out this months competition offered to us from our friends at Wheelgate/ Twin lakes adventure park. This prize is valid for 3 months, so if you have it in your plans to take the kids/grandkids to this adventure haven during spring bank holiday or at a weekend, you really should enter!
This year for us, it is all about new content articles and features. We have already run a ‘High Street’ feature in the Broadmeadows edition for a few months and this month, we have extended it to our Alfreton edition. This is something we are looking to do more of, as it has been so well received. Finally, I think it’s worth a mention that our very own Paul will be duking it out in the ring to raise money for Cancer Research UK for the Ultimate White-Collar Boxing (UWCB) Event at the Roundhouse in Derby in April. He’s training hard and we’ve got his back (quite literally as we are one of his sponsors on his shirt!). He’s going to send us some updates for our FB account and if anyone who knows him wants to support him, don’t be shy, it’s for a fantastic cause that has impacted so many people. Happy Reading,
Emily x PS: Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

They were here last year and are returning again this year, what a sight for sore eyes they make, a group of FLAT GREEN LAWN BOWLERS known by the mythical name of the PHOENIX. Thanks to Ripley CVS, Grant funding was awarded to the Phoenix Bowls Club, by a panel of adjudicators, for 5 unemployed people to have the opportunity to join the Phoenix Bowls Club, with coaching provided absolutely free. These 5 places are open to any person in receipt of benefits over the age of 18. This grant allows The Phoenix Bowls Club to draw down a further 10 places if need be. So apply now for one of these unique places before they have all gone. The Committee welcome new players and are actively seeking them, from beginners to experienced league players, so come along and join our members. The people of Somercotes can once again sit in the park on a hot balmy summer’s evening and watch and enjoy this great game that is open to all, young and old alike.

Slimming World Recipe Chicken Tikka Kebabs with Pitta Having a kebab always feels like a treat. So why not treat yourself with this fabulous Slimming World recipe. This dish is perfectly complemented with a tasty side salad. Serves: 4
Ready in: 25 minutes
Syns per serving: 7 (deduct 7 Syns if using Pitta Bread wholemeal as a healthy extra ‘b’ choice)
Method: 1. Put the chicken in a freezer bag (or a glass or stainless-steel bowl) with the curry powder, yogurt and garlic. Season with salt and stir to combine. 2. Seal the bag or cover the bowl with cling film and marinate in the fridge for at least 1 hour or overnight. 3. For the salad, put the cucumber, radishes, celery and lettuce in a bowl. Mix together the yogurt and chopped coriander, season, then stir through the salad. 4. Preheat your grill to high. Lift the chicken out of the marinade, letting any excess drain off, then thread onto 4 metal skewers. Place on a baking tray lined with foil and grill for 10-12 minutes, turning halfway, or until the chicken is lightly charred and cooked through. 5. Toast the pitta breads. Scatter the coriander sprigs over the chicken skewers and serve with 1 pitta bread per person with the salad and lemon wedges for squeezing over.
For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk
Ingredients: • 8 skinless and boneless chicken thighs, visible fat removed, cut into bite-size pieces • 3 level tbsp tikka curry powder* • 250g fat-free natural Greekstyle yogurt • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 4 x 60g wholemeal pitta breads • Lemon wedges, to serve

20 Years and Counting Paul Hawkins has been repairing cars since he was just 14 years old, helping his dad over many a weekend at their family home in Brinsley. At the age of 16 Paul left school and went to work in the local garage in Brinsley before moving onto garages nearby. As well as gaining valuable experience he met some great local characters along the way. In June 2000 Paul, along with his wife Angie, decided it was time to go it alone and took the decision to buy the Knightsbridge Garage in Jacksdale. The garage was originally built by Claude Earnshaw, a gentleman whose exploits in the battle of Knightsbridge made him very well known locally. Claude decided to name his garage ‘Knightsbridge’ after said battle and this is still in place to this today. Paul and Angie have had their ups and downs over the years like most businesses but have always kept moving forward and have always had a great working relationship.
Paul told the Voice “The secret to our great working relationship is me knowing my place. I’ve got many, many years of experience repairing cars and I’m more than happy to stay in the garage whilst Angie looks after everything in the office. She’s great at running that side of the business!”

When they first purchased the business in 2000 they also dispensed petrol onsite to the local community, however once local supermarkets in the area began to do the same and undercutting local garages in the process, they had no option but to end that side of their business.

Not to be too disheartened by this turn of events, Paul and Angie worked even harder to build up the repair side of the business to the success that it is today; and will continue to be for many more years.

Book Review ‘Me’ – Elton John
Elton John has never claimed to aim for the understated so it’s not too surprising that his autobiography is called Me. He writes that the great thing about rock and roll is that someone like him, a chubby kid from Pinner in Essex named Reg, can be a star. Though to be fair to him, he’s written some brilliantly catchy stuff and as a performer he’s the real deal. And this story has got the lot. From his early days of having his songs rejected while he trailed round northern clubs playing two gigs a night as a pianist in bands that were going nowhere, to gold and platinum albums, friendships with Freddie Mercury, Rod Stewart Princess Di and Versace and bizarrely disco dancing with the Queen. And the memoir is not shy about his equally rackety personal life. Drugs, sex, gossip (the more scurrilous the better). Not for nothing was the film his husband David Furnish made about Elton called tantrums and tiaras. Me is a really funny and sometimes shocking tale. But the thing that stops this just being a parade of rock star memories and excess – and there is plenty of that - is his total brutal honesty about the bad bits of his life, the suicide attempts, the temper, the drug, booze, shopping and food addictions. And how he, just about, managed to survive it all and remain still standing, as the song goes. This isn’t a sanitized version of his life. It’s warts and all, but he emerges as a paid-up human being. Good stuff.

Vintage Rambles a with raf lake and F
6.5 mile circular from Newstead via Newstead Abbey and the Linby trail
We are back with another ‘classic walk’ this month. This walk originally feature in October 2015 but it has remained strong in our memories ever since so we are delighted to be able to feature it again, with many of you seeing it for the first time. The walk makes good use of the Linby Trail and the area around Newstead Abbey to offer beautiful scenery along with a good leg stretch and good terrrain, We were battered by Storm Dennis and previously Storm Ciara in the build-up to the magazine publication so I think we are due some nice spring weather in which to enjoy getting out and about with our furry friends again.

6.
A moderate walk for you and your dog. This medium length walk should take around 2½ - 3 hours. There may be some sections of uneven terrain depending on the weather. There are a couple of road sections, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear for the conditions.
7.
8.
Further on you will pass Newstead Abbey on your right and then a car park on your left. Continue straight and cross over a crossroads. After a short distance turn right onto a footpath. Continue into the woods along the path until reaching a tarmac road. Turn left along the road and continue straight for some distance. Upon reaching a large pair of metal gates directly in front of you, take a footpath to the right of the gates and continue straight with a tall hedge on your left. Continue to pass through a metal gate and then continue straight along a farm track for some distance until reaching a road. Turn right along the road signposted for ‘Village Centre’. After the road bends sharp right and then sharp left, turn immediately right along a tarmac lane signposted for ‘Linby’. Pass by a large wooden gate and then pass through a double metal gate. Just prior to reaching a second double metal gate, bear slightly left and pass through a large wooden gate into a churchyard, ignoring the large wooden gate on your left. After passing through the gate continue through the churchyard for a very short distance and then turn left through a gap in the fence onto a signposted footpath. Follow the path until passing through a gap in a hedge and then turn immediate right onto another footpath.

9.
Continue to pass through a metal gate, over a stone bridge and pass by a pond on your left. Continue along the path until reaching a road. Turn right along the road into Linby village. 10. Pass the Horse and Groom pub on your right and continue along the road until reaching a roundabout. At the roundabout, turn right and join ‘Linby Trail’. 11. Continue along the trail for quite some distance until eventually passing a wooden signboard on your right reading ‘Linby Trail’. After the signboard, continue straight to cross over a bridge and then after a short distance bear left away from the trail and onto a playing field. 12. Head diagonally across the playing field towards the clubhouse building, near the clubhouse pass through a wooden gate onto a road. Turn left along the road and cross over a level crossing back to the car park.

JERRY GREEN DOG RESCUE We care for and rehome abandoned and unwanted dogs, and will never put a dog down unless it’s the only humane option. We receive no Government or National Lottery funding so are dependent on donations from the public.
We run five centres in the east of England, including your nearest one in Nottinghamshire at Warsop Lane, Blidworth, NG21 0PG. We are open 1:30pm to 4:00pm every day.
REGULAR GIVING
As you can imagine, our vet bills are very large, even for just the standard vet care we give every #RescueDog. For standard vet care alone, it costs us on average ÂŁ84 per dog, costing the charity ÂŁ43,000 every year, which is why your donations are so important for us đ&#x;?śđ&#x;?śđ&#x;?śđ&#x;?ś From as little as ÂŁ5 a month, you can help us to continue doing what we do and give our dogs the second chance they deserve. Set up a monthly donation here: https://buff.ly/2NMqRj1 #AdoptDontShop #SupportUs #VetCare.

Mike’us sings M
As Max Bygraves (and if you don’t know who he is/was, ask your grandma) once said...
Fings Ain’t Wot They Used to Be (Part 1)
Would you have ever thought that seemingly rationale human beings could become so devastated if they thought they had lost their phone? Did you think that the English language would see the introduction of more new words and phrases like OMG, BTW, 2nite, TX, LOL, GR8, B4N, BRB, BCNU, TMI etc... than at any time since the Norman Conquest? Be honest, no you didn’t! Well, can you imagine how the youngsters of today would have managed before mobile phones took over the world? In the ‘old days’ - i.e. any time before 1985! - we had to use either landlines or payphones. The former was generally found in a room or hallway with the handset attached by cord to the main unit. This meant that when you made or received a call you had limited freedom and often found your Mum listening in as you tried to impress your boy/girlfriend. Unlike today, you couldn’t just carry on the conversation for another hour in the bathroom. Not only that, you had your Dad in the background muttering, ”Don’t forget that it’s me that pays the bills in this house!” If you needed privacy, you had to put your coat on and go down the street to the nearest phone box. There were however, a number of problems with this option.
Would the box be vacant and even when it was, had it recently been used as a toilet? Would the phone be working? Did you have enough change? Could you remember the number? Besides all that, if there was no-one at the other end, you couldn’t just leave a message and would have to go home before repeating the entire process. Assuming that you had got into the box and had just begun an earnest intimate conversation with the love of your life, you could guarantee that there would soon be a knock on the phone box door. You’d look up to see someone outside. It was invariably a middle aged woman, with headscarf protecting her curlers hopping from one foot to another and mouthing something like “Will you be long? I’ve got to make an urgent appointment with my gynaecologist.” If you tried to ignore her and turn away, she’d move round the outside of the box and look you in the eye. I defy anyone to continue whispering sweet nothings to whoever is listening at the other end of the line under that sort of pressure. OK, many of us may look back nostalgically on our youth, but I reckon I’ve just reminded you of one way in which our lives have improved in the modern world. Besides, have you ever tried taking a ‘selfie’ from a phone booth? Whilst I’m in a nostalgic mood, there might just be a bit more reminiscing in April.

Gardener’s Calendar
We should start getting enough warmth into the soil for spring growth to really take off round about now. You can plant summer bulbs such as lilies, gladioli and agapanthus, but remember that most like sun – the results won’t be good if they’re in shade. They should be planted two to three times their depth and at least one bulb’s width apart. Re-pot pelargoniums and fuchsias which you have overwintered and increase watering but don’t put them directly out into the garden for a couple of months. Top-dress containers by removing the top five centimetres (two inches) of compost and replace with new.
r
Cut cornus grown for winter colour right back to the base so it will produce again next year and cut buddleia back hard before the sap rises. Slugs love tender new growth. You can buy nematodes, a parasite which will kill them, from garden centres. They are watered into the soil once the temperature reaches 5°C and are safe to use where there are animals and children. Neither do they harm other forms of wildlife. Use (and empty daily well away from anyone’s garden!) scooped-out orange or grapefruit skins turned upside-down as traps. If growing slug-vulnerable seedlings try putting in a pot and cover with a cloche rather than directly into the soil and then transplant later. And if you really love hostas, also grow in pots.

Look out for the Peak District Owls‌
Across the Peak District, spring brings a flush of new growth of vegetation and a flurry of activity from birds, mammals, and other wildlife. Woods and hedges resound to the songs and calls of small birds, and there is a hum of bumblebees and honeybees. Woodland wildflowers burst into life, and around the heather moors and the limestone dales there is abundant evidence of nature stirring. Amid all Little Owl this wealth of activity, it is worth watching out for some of our most iconic and striking wild birds – the owls. Several of these gorgeous bird species are back in the Peak and doing rather well. Indeed, with talk of ‘rewilding’, a part of the idea is to reconstruct broken foodchains i.e. the loss of both birds of prey and larger carnivorous mammals. With a little help, nature is doing much of this itself and we have, for example, both otter and polecat back in the Peak. There is talk of bringing back the pine marten but the truth is that it never went away – at least not fully! This stunning member of the weasel family has hung on in the north-eastern part of the region. Several birds of prey have also returned or recovered in numbers, and the owls are Tawny Owl amongst them. Both barn owl and short-eared owl are now regularly seen in areas like the Eastern Moors estate for example. From the threshold of the Grouse Inn at Froggatt you have a chance of barn owls over the
wildflower meadows managed by the National Trust, and displaying shorteared owls over the nearby moorland edge. Breeding short-eared owls do vary year to year as they follow the numbers of their prey - the short-tailed voles. Increasingly Barn Owl though, I do get records sent in of barn owls, for example from a back-garden in Holmesfield or close by Owler Bar roundabout! Our most common owl is the surprisingly large tawny, a denizen of woods and parklands but equally at home hunting at dusk over moorland and bog. Formerly common and widespread, this is another bird on the cusp of a troubling decline so much so that the British Trust for Ornithology conducted a national survey last year.

Little Owl Finally, one of my favourites and easily overlooked, is the little owl or ‘Frenchie’ (so named because it is a non-native bird introduced here from France in the early 1900s). Look out for them on telegraph poles and around rocky areas on the moorland fringes; being tiny, they are easy to miss.
