Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads
Hello Readers, My name is Emily and I’ve been the Editor/ Owner of Voice Magazines Ltd for over 10yrs now (it was called Amber Valley Voice in the earlier years). With the addition of our Ripley edition we now have 10 magazines, delivering to well in excess of 50,000 homes in the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Peak District areas. I started back in 2010, hand delivering to 2500 homes in Swanwick – all produced, created and delivered by myself and crikey, do I cringe now at those early magazines…. you can see them on our issuu pages if you really want to have a nosey (our website is still under construction – 2yrs later!) Fortunately, I have a wonderful team supporting me these days and it’s our mission to make sure that this publication works for advertisers, readers and communities alike. Our aim is always to bring you the best local advertisers and local information that you can rely upon. In ordinary times, we run community diaries and event listings, so If you would like to feature in our mags, either as an advertiser or you run a community or not-for-profit group or event, please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you. Sometimes, we’ll run readers offers or competitions and this month we have got a comp for you guys!! As you are all aware, the Y Not Festival IS running this year yayyyy! We’re so excited, as the Voice team are on tour BUT we also managed to get a
family ticket to give away to our lovely readers. The line up is amazing and something really positive to look forward too after the last couple of years. SOOOO…. to be in with a chance of winning - all you need to do is answer the following question and email, it back to us. Which county is the YNot festival held in? Email us at info@voicemagazines.co.uk before 5pm on 18th June 2021, with the answer, your name & contact telephone number (if we don’t have both of these, you won’t be included in the draw). *T&C’s apply. We really hope you enjoy reading our mag this month and if you did, the good news is, we’re back every month! So please spread the word and drop us an email if you like, we love hearing from our readers. Happy Reading,
Emily x

Robert Argile: Councillor, Engineer and Architect Ripley is not known for its architects. Engineers, yes: the Butterley Company’s list of achievements is well known, but architects? Well, there is one at least whose work merits attention, and the more so since designing buildings seemed to be a sideline for him, his main activity being civil engineering works: he supervised the laying of most of early Ripley’s drainage system, for example. Robert Argile was not formally trained as an architect: he learned on the job, both at Butterley and from his father, another Robert, who had progressed from being a foreman at the “steam engine manufactory” (Butterley) in his mid-thirties to becoming a selfemployed consulting engineer, even designing the new hall and shops for the Ripley Co-operative Society in 1880. Like his son, he also played an important role in both in the Baptist church and the town’s local government. Robert Junior spent most of his time as a surveyor and consulting engineer but from time to time he designed buildings, mainly non-conformist chapels like those in Mapperley (1875), Kilburn (1891) and Marehay (1903). Later, in 1911, he designed Ripley Hospital, a project he had long campaigned for.
4
His greatest achievement, however, was not in Ripley but in Dale Street, Manchester: Langley Buildings. This was a 5 storey long narrow construction, in the baroque style, elaborately faced in terracotta tiles, built in 1908 as the printing office of the “Daily News” and the warehouse for the burgeoning mail order firm of J.D. Williams. Now a listed building, it is totally unlike anything else he built. How did he come to build It? The answer seems to lie in his commitment to his church. In 1878, James David Williams, a draper from London, had married Amy Ann Coupe at Ripley’s Baptist chapel. The Coupe family, who lived at Porter House in Ripley, were also devout Baptists and would have known Robert Argile, one of the church’s elders, well. What more trustworthy man, then, to help found a retail empire? In 1897 in Ripley he had laid out a new road called Argyll Road, modestly changing the spelling to make it refer to the Duke of Argyll. Yet what better tribute to his role in building the town and its infrastructure, than to name a street after him? Perhaps it should be changed back!

Slimming World Recipe Margherita Pizza Homemade pizza is a real game changer and this recipe from Slimming world is easy to follow and provides a great base to begin experimenting with your favourite toppings. Just remember to count those syns if you are on plan.
Serves: 4
Ready in: 55mins
Syns per serving: 7
Ingredients:
Method:
• 125g strong bread flour
1. Put all the topping ingredients apart from the mozzarella and basil in a saucepan, season to taste and cook over a medium-low heat for 25-30 minutes or until you have a thick, spreadable sauce.
• 7g sachet instant active yeast
2. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6 and heat through a baking sheet or, better still, a pizza stone – this will help your pizza to cook evenly. 3. Put the flour in a large bowl and stir in the yeast and 1 tsp salt. Make a well in the middle, pour in 75ml of warm water and mix with a wooden spoon until you have a soft, fairly wet dough. Dust a surface very lightly with flour (1 level tsp is ½ Syn), turn out the dough and knead for 5 minutes until smooth. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a thin circle about 22cm across. 4. Put your rolled-out base on the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet (add a sheet of non-stick baking parchment if you’re using a baking sheet). Spoon the tomato sauce over the base and arrange the mozzarella on top. 5. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the base is golden. Scatter over the basil and serve hot with a rocket salad.
For the topping: • 4 shallots, finely chopped • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tsp dried red chilli flakes • 2 tsp dried oregano • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 1 tbsp tomato purée • 70g reduced-fat mozzarella cheese, cubed or sliced • Small handful of torn fresh basil leaves, to serve

I needed help, support and an eating plan that was easy to follow and suitable for a family too. I found all this and more at Slimming World! I could eat as much Free Food as I wanted and still have the treats like chocolate and cake and still lose weight. I can enjoy family favourite meals such as spaghetti bolognaise, chilli, roast dinners and Slimming World versions of takeaway favourites. Nothing is banned so the plan is flexible, generous and suitable for everyone including members who are diabetic and our mums to be too. I went on to reach my target weight by losing 3 stones and the best thing is I’ve kept it off.

In June 2002 I became a Slimming World Consultant and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Next year I will be celebrating my 20 year anniversary. During those years I’ve had members who have won National Slimming World titles such Diamond Target member and places in the Top 10 Greatest Losers in the UK. I’ve had members feature in National newspapers and magazines and I’ve even featured on a local news program too. Every member who walks into my groups has a dream target weight and it is a joy to watch those members gain in confidence week by week. I now run 4 groups every week including one in Ripley at Greenwich Park Community Hall every Thursday morning. We moved to this popular venue in 2019 as it has a large car park, great facilities and disabled access too. During the Pandemic my groups have been running virtual but now the restrictions have been lifted we are able to run sessions in person again. With Covid guidance in place to keep everyone safe. Over the last 12 months the members of my Ripley group have lost almost 150 stones between them. Now we are fully running again I am looking forward to welcoming new members along to start their own journey to Slimming success.

They chose Belper not only because it was a place Anna new and loved but because of its award-winning high street, warm friendly residents and vibrant, almost euphoric atmosphere. The showroom is located in a stunning two-floor Derbyshire stone building on Chapel Street and has a selection of kitchens on show for you to view. About Sonny: After leaving university Sonny worked for 15 years in the kitchen industry as a designer for some of the biggest companies in the country. In 2019 he decided to set up “Sonna Kitchens” and started out visiting customers in their homes with his mobile showroom. Sonna Kitchens has grown but Sonny’s high standards

World Music Day! “Music was my first love”, so sang John Miles in 1976…but what does music mean to you? 21st June is World Music Day - it’s also the day that the UK is due to be fully liberated from the restrictions imposed by COVID (fingers crossed of course!) as well as being the Summer Solstice. Will you be listening to a few tunes to celebrate, or is music not high on your list of likes? Music has always been an integral part of being human. Musical instruments have been around for thousands of years, the earliest known being flutes, made out of mammoth bone, and dating back an incredible 43,000 years! Even before that impressively early period in prehistory, it isn’t a stretch to imagine our early ancestors using the power of their voices to create music. Not all of us are blessed with amazingly tuneful voices, yet most of us are able to recognise and enjoy that skill in others. I like to think of my ancestor, umpteen generations removed, sitting around the fire humming along and tapping her feet as someone else sings a song (I do have a vivid imagination though…curse of the writer!). Music certainly has some sort of power over us, hearing a song from ‘back in the day’, can instantly transport you in time. And have you ever noticed that you can remember the lyrics of a song from years ago and yet struggle to remember where you put the car keys? I know I have! This connection between music and memory is why it is often used to help people living with dementia, and in care homes in general. For a truly heart warming example of how music memory
remains long after other memories have faded, type ‘dementia ballet dancer’ into Google and prepare to be amazed (have a tissue handy!). Staying with memory, well the mind anyway - one of the best ways to ensure your brain remains in tip top condition for as long as possible is to learn to play an instrument. You may never be a virtuoso, but the very act of learning to play helps to form new neural paths in your brain (it’s called neuroplasticity) it’s like exercise for your grey matter. If you want to see if there are any World Music Day events near you, I recommend you checking out www. makemusicday.co.uk/events. You can create and add your own events to that site too - so if there isn’t anything local to you, why not think about organising a get together? It needn’t be big, expensive, and flashy - it could just be a concert on your local village green or in the pub carpark. It would be a great way to get your neighbours and friends together after what has been a horrible year or so. So, returning to the opening sentence of this article…what does music mean to you? Visit our Facebook page and let us know! These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. To find out more visit www.landgassociates. co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351341

Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and
We first featured this walk in Christmas 2014! So, we thought it was time to revisit and we were really glad we did. It’s a great walk, making use of the Rowthorne Trail, Teversal Trail and Pleasley Pit Country Park before heading off to explore the countryside around Glapwell. The doggies loved it as they were able to explore off lead on the trails and if you are looking for a stop off point the café at Pleasley Pit is due to reopen by the time this magazine arrives with you.
6-mile circular walk near Rowthorne Village A moderate walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2½ hours. Whilst a large part of the walk is trails and paths there are some fields to cross with uneven and potentially muddy sections so a good pair of boots or wellies is a must, especially at this time of year. There are a few sections of road, so please take care and keep dogs on leads at these times.

Book Review For anyone still dreaming about summer holidays abroad in these uncertain times, the writer Donna Leon is a gift. Her high-end Brunetti crime stories are set in Italy - Venice in particular. And alongside unfailingly good stories, Ms Leon is brilliant on the Italian way of life, the love of food, the love of people, the warmth, and the glittering sunlight. The series started nearly 30 years ago and Guido Brunetti has investigated a new crime every year in the city of canals and carnival. As police comissario he takes on everything from the mafia to the church, opera and people just generally behaving badly. Donna Leon has lived in Venice for 30 years and has millions of fans worldwide – she’s been translated into more than 30 languages and some of her books have been turned into TV series The latest Brunetti is Transient Desires, but to be fair you could start at the beginning of the series Death at La Fenice and half the fun is watching the way Brunetti deals with the changing times over the years. It is a series to fall in love with. And if you’ve already got Venice on your bucket list, it will whet your appetite even more

Beer Goggles Did you know that June 15th is National Beer Day? I can’t say as I did until I saw it written down somewhere, but it did lead me to think about beer - or more accurately the history of beer, before someone accuses me of being an alcofrolic with beer goggles on! A little spot of ‘Googling’ (minus the beer goggles of course) and I managed to establish that beer is in fact a very, very, very old beverage indeed. In fact the earliest archaeological evidence of a beer produced by fermentation is a 13,000-year-old residue found in a cave near Haifa in Israel. As a drink it may not have tickled our modern taste buds, being of a ‘gruel’ like consistency apparently, but it just goes to show that where man goes, beer seems to inevitably follow! Since beer is essentially a by-product of fermenting grain, it may well have been discovered accidentally in many different places throughout the world when humans began to live a more settled agriculturally based existence and grains featured more heavily in the daily diet. One of the earliest written down recipes for beer comes from a 3,900-year-old Sumerian poem about Ninkasi, their patron goddess of brewing. It described beer being made from the barley left from the production of bread. ‘Small beer’, a very low alcohol brew would have been the drink of choice throughout Europe and the UK in the middle ages. In a climate not suitable for growing grapes to turn into wine, beer was a readily available alternative, and workers involved in heavy labour were known to drink up to 10 pints a day. By the 15th century the addition of hops to a brew reached the UK; an unhopped beer would have been known as an ale, while the use of hops would make it a beer.
38
The Industrial Revolution saw the beginning of the mass production of beers which ultimately led to the large scale breweries of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Commercialisation and mechanisation led to a reduction in locally produced brews, replacing them with standard, often chemically laden concoctions. To the relief of many a beer aficionado, this trend of mass production has been reversed somewhat in the past 20 or so years, with the emergence of many craft beer breweries - small scale, local, and each creating their own unique beers. Derbyshire is blessed with many of these producers including Howard Town, Glossop; Thornbridge and Peak Ales both near Bakewell; Eyam Brewery; Buxton Brewery; Intrepid in the Hope Valley; Wolds Farm and Moot Ales, near Matlock…even the most beer phobic amongst us should be able to find something to our tastes. (Personally, I favour Howard Town’s ‘Hope’ - but I am biased because the head brewer is a friend!). Next time you raise a pint, give pause to think of the generations before you who have done the same over the last several thousand years. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. The Other Lambretta Boys
In the 1960s and early 70s the newsrooms were full of stories featuring Mods and Rockers fighting on the beaches and promenades of England, the Rockers on their BSA’s, Triumphs and Nortons; the Mods on their Vespas and Lambrettas. Their conflicts hit the headlines not only in this country but throughout Europe and beyond. But there were other Lambretta boys who never made News at Ten and I was one. On my 16th birthday, my maternal grandparents handed me £100 and told me to use it wisely. I did. I wandered down the street and bought a second hand Lambretta SX200 from a local centre half of ill repute. I would have tried to haggle the price down but thought better of it. Back then if you saw a young man with missing teeth, a broken nose and concussion you could have a good bet that it was a local centre forward who had recently played against him. His name will stay anonymous...but every ex footballer aged between 60 and 75 will know exactly who it is It had a Union Jack seat. I had a Union Jack crash helmet. Some people thought I looked cool... the great majority thought I looked like a t**t. I’ve never been fitter than when I owned that Lambretta; I pushed it further than I rode it!! I had a beautiful girlfriend at the time who lived
42
in Heage Road In Ripley. Sadly she was somewhat less beautiful when she eventually dumped due to the fact that every time time I leaned forward to kiss her goodnight I cracked the bridge of her nose with the peak on my patriotic helmet. My best mate also bought an SX200. By this time I was an experienced rider having had mine 3 days...so I decided to take him on his first run out. All was going well until we got to the first traffic lights and, as I stopped at the red he came hurtling by on the pavement and smashed into a pile of builders sand. I’d taught him how to start it but omitted to explain where the brakes were. We were The Other Lambretta Boys!! More next month.

Gardener’s Calendar Despite our chilly spring most gardens are bursting with life. You can start to think about pruning early flowering shrubs such as forsythia, currant and mock orange to ensure you get a good show of flowers next year. Leave it later and the flowers are less likely. Take out diseased stems to ground level and cut back generally to a lower strongly growing stem. Cut back a quarter of older stems to the base. Nasturtiums and night scented stock are among the seeds you can still be planting now, along with other “companion” plants which will help keep pests away. These usually have a strong scent, which confuse the insects which will damage your prize plants, whether fruit and veg or the likes of roses. So you can use nasturtiums alongside beans, lavender for carrots, calendula and mint for tomatoes, although watch out that the mint doesn’t take over your plot. Artemesia attracts things like ladybirds which see off aphids.
r
If you’ve left your lawn to grow long in May to encourage wildflowers but now want to cut it, do it in stages. If weeds you didn’t have also popped up, remember that weedkiller will kill the wildflowers too!
Top Tip If you’re looking to attract pollinators such as bees as hoverflies to your garden, try the likes of sage and borage, heliotrope cosmos, and salvias.

The Splendour of the Red Tree from Turkey
All across the Peak District there is most stunning and splendid wild sight emerging as the ‘wild rhododendron’ bursts into bloom. This is the bane of conservationists but much-loved by the public (and a lot of wildlife too). Many people don’t realise this is an ‘alien’, exotic, or non-native plant, and those who do, think it comes from the Himalayas. This spectacular shrub is Rhododendron ponticum or literally ‘The Red Tree from Turkey’; so yes, there is a clue there. Most rhododendrons do come from the Himalayas from the Sikkim and Bhutan across into China; with a few in North America, a small number in Europe, and a lot in tropical forests. However, our ‘wild’ shrub is from Europe and around the Mediterranean.
Landowners loved it for shelter, ornament, and especially game cover for shoots. Many planted it as wildlife cover and its stunning flowers, and it was extensively used as root-stock for less hardy prize rhododendrons brought to Britain by the Empire’s plant hunters. Collectors travelled the globe in search of the exotic, and it burst onto and across the Peak’s countryside for 200 years spreading unnoticed and uncontrolled. This is one of the most successful of our invasive alien plants and talk of attempted total eradication is pie-inthe-sky. There’s been ‘talk’ of effective control for sixty years or more by forestry experts, and rhododendron can be dealt with on individual sites. However, there is no effective strategy or policy to stop the further spread across the landscape. Personally I cannot see government spending the huge amount of cash that would be needed and also I don’t imagine everybody would be agreeable or co-operative. Many of the seed-plants are in small, private gardens and I just don’t think people will take to them being ‘eradicated’. This plant can cause a head-ache for site managers but gardeners and many of the resident and visiting public love it.
This flowering event becomes a natural spectacular which in places like the Peak District and Snowdonia in particular, presents with stunning vistas and views. This is an annual happening for which people travel miles to see and has become a tourism attraction. Covering woods, heaths, moorland edge, and old parklands with a blanket of red and purple to mauve flowers, the impact is dramatic. Outside this peak of flowering the shrub is far less obvious and is often unnoticed. Invading natural habitats it clearly impacts on native wildlife but not always negatively. However, there is a twist in this story for a plant often demonised as an alien invader. It was native in Britain between the recent glacial periods but somehow never returned when icy chills mellowed around 15,000 years ago. It was effectively banished to the far flung tips of Europe and Near Asia (Turkey, Lebanon, Portugal, and Spain), until 1763 when plant collectors brought seeds back to London’s Kew Gardens. From there as they say, the rest is history. Professor Ian D. Rotherham of Sheffield Hallam University is a researcher, writer and broadcaster on wildlife and environmental issues in the Peak District and elsewhere. View from the Allotment
If there is one thing we allotmenteers take for granted it is the amazing process of photosynthesis fundamental to all life. I hear LBLAA members chatting about the weather (too dry/too wet/too cold/too hot), when to plant their chitted potatoes, what nutrients to put on the soil, what needs lime (did you know peas like a sprinkling of lime when being sown?), non-digging v digging, how to keep pigeons off the brassicas, what seeds to plant when, how to avoid carrot-fly, etc., but I never hear them discussing the details of photosynthesis, or why C4 plants like sweetcorn can tolerate drought conditions better than C3 plants like spinach or lettuce. I sometimes sit and gaze in awe at the different shaped leaves of tomatoes, chard, carrots, leeks, potatoes, radishes, pumpkins, squash, courgettes, rhubarb, etc, imagining the photosynthesis that is going on in the chloroplasts where electrons in chlorophyll get excited by blue and red light. This is the energy-harvesting stage of photosynthesis, the other stage being the reduction of carbon dioxide to sugar in the Calvin cycle, making use of the energy absorbed by the chlorophyll. The oxygen is released to sustain life and the sugars are used by plants for energy, cell division and growth and to make the cellulose of plant cell walls and starch, a stored energy source. In C3 plants photosynthesis takes place only once in mesophyll cells. In C4 plants photosynthesis takes place twice - in mesophyll cells as well as in bundle sheath cells giving them an advantage in drought conditions. On top of this plants need nutrients – the major ones being nitrogen to make amino acids for proteins, nucleic acids and chlorophyll, phosphorus vital for photosynthesis and growth and potassium involved in controlling CO2 and water uptake via stomata among other functions. To grow your own C3 and C4 plants at Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) Allotment Association contact Mick the plot bailiff on 07725402033 and check our website at www. lblaa.co.uk
