From the Editor Hi Readers, I hope you are enjoyed your great British Summer – it was hot and short lived like all the greats but fear not, I’m banking on a cracking September once all the school holidays, Euro’s etc are finished! You never know, we might have our long awaited ‘Freedom Day’ by that point! So, I’ve made one of my observations this month, which is just re-affirming what I’ve talked about earlier in the year. I am massively struggling to understand the obvious juxtaposition between people at the moment! What happened to the ‘in-between’? Imagine this scenario, you say something contentious to me, such as ‘the dress is blue and gold’ and I say, ‘no it isn’t, it’s cream and black’. Now, we are clearly seeing things differently and that’s ok but it doesn’t mean we need to be arch enemies that never speak again! Rather simply, we both shrug our shoulders and move on to talk about something else! I just don’t understand this concept of ‘sides’, life is not that simple for any of us to not appreciate the grey areas in everything we say, do, perceive etc. Whatever happened to ‘turn the other cheek’ or even ‘walk a mile in someone else’s shoes’? I’ve seen about 5 examples of businesses & charities trying to be ‘taken down’ by internet trolls who like to complain, which is disappointing to say the least after the 18 months everyone has just has. On the flip side, I have recently experienced first-hand the kindest of strangers; walking back from the office to the car laden with dogs, bags and boxes, a lovely lady stopped and asked if I needed any help to carry anything. Well, you know what they say around here, ‘nowt so funny as folk’! Talking of ‘Freedom Day’, at this stage we still don’t know what’s happening with events at the time of writing & going to print. We aren’t sure if our beloved YNot festival is going ahead, my heart goes out to them and the rest of the hospitality industry as they find themselves in yet another state of limbo in which they are expected to ‘Pivot’. As a large proportion of society have discovered, it’s very difficult to survive financially when you can’t trade/go to work/have minimal income and the stress for the owners/organisers must be phenomenal. We have our fingers and toes crossed for
everyone involved that the test events go well and that the rest of the events community including YNot get the go ahead at the beginning of July. With this in mind, we’re now planning to bring our community events and diaries back in August or September editions, depending on what happens in the next few weeks and how much time we’ll have to put it together prior to print. If you were in any of these last time, please don’t assume that you will be included going forward, we will be starting from scratch! We’ll try and call some of the people from the previous listings but if you are a community group/not-for-profit organisation and you are planning events for later this year and/or you have regular meetings, send us an email to: info@voicemagazines. co.uk and one of the team will get back to you. These listings are free, they will only be a minimal listing and only accessible to community or not-for profit groups. However, if these groups would like something a little larger, we’ve put together and trialled in our Kirkby magazine, a community noticeboard. You can choose the size you require and prices start from £6+vat per square but you can buy multiple squares. Why not pop over to our issuu site or Facebook page if you don’t receive that edition, to have a look for yourself. Happy Reading,
Emily x

I’m the Pied Piper, follow me The Pied Piper of Hamelin Story
For those unfamiliar with the tale, the Pied Piper of Hamelin is set in 1284 in the town of Hamelin, Lower Saxony, Germany. This town was facing a rat infestation and a piper dressed in a coat of multi coloured bright cloth appeared. This piper promised to get rid of the rats in return for a payment, to which the townspeople agreed. Although the piper got rid of the rats by leading them away with his music, the people of Hamelin reneged on their promise. The furious piper left vowing revenge. On July 26 of that same year, the piper returned and led the children away, never to be seen again: A truly disturbing legend which has endured for around 800 years but what is the connection with Alfreton and the surrounding villages? We’ll fast forward to July, 1938 as the storm clouds gathered over Europe and War was on the horizon. The Anderson Committee published a report on evacuation which prioritised schoolchildren and mothers with infants. It was deemed better value for these evacuees to be billeted in private homes in safer, ‘reception’ areas of the country, rather than building special camps. Hosts in these areas could face a fine if they refused to take an evacuee. On 1 September, 1939, the government had initiated Operation Pied Piper, which would see the evacuation of over 1.5 million people from urban ‘target’ areas, of whom 800,000 were children. The origins of childhood evacuation in fact lie much further back. It was in the early twentieth century that governments and populations across Europe first began to speculate on the dangers of aerial bombardment. H.G. Wells’ 1907 novel ‘War in the Air’ predicted the growing threat of attack from the air and governments were worried how cities and urban crowds in particular would respond. The First World War saw some of these fears realised: although often forgotten in popular memory, British cities were bombed by zeppelins throughout the 1914-1918 conflict, resulting in the deaths of 1,239 civilians, half of whom were women and children.
Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow too. Derbyshire was expected to take some 200,000 evacuees and it was from Birmingham that Alfreton’s first lot of evacuees came, arriving at the Town’s Railway Station by Special Train. Each child was allocated a “foster” parent, some of whom may not have been over enthusiastically participating. Like it or not they had little choice. The children were to attend local schools and the impact on them in terms of extra pupils was considerable. In late September, 1939, Morts had 150 local pupils and 350 evacuees and there would be a similar picture elsewhere in the district. “Morts” was opened on 16 March 1939, by Alderman W. Mortimer Wilson, MA, whose name went on to be borne by the school for close on 70 years. The school opened as a non-selective establishment with two separate schools within, the boys and girls being educated separately. The first headmaster of the boys’ school was Wilfred Dawes and the headmistress of the girls’ school was Miss Cresswell. Some evacuees were disruptive initially, but were brought into line quite quickly by these formidable characters! Quite often the evacuees barely rubbed along with the local children but friendships were made that lasted the test of time. Operation Pied Piper was not an overwhelming success. Many unhappy children returned home within days or weeks, it was after all the period of the phoney war. Sadly many were mistreated. On the other hand, many who loved the whole experience, didn’t want to go home at war’s end. Some, whose homes had been bombed and parents killed, were able to stay. Others returned as soon as they were old enough, to build productive lives in the countryside they had learned to love as evacuees.
Photographs of the evacuation of British children in 1939, excitedly waving from packed trains or with name tags round their necks, have become some of the most emblematic images of the War although the reality of what was happening was far removed from that. Contrary to popular memory, these evacuees did not just come from London or England, but from cities like

Time for a Picnic July is ‘National Picnic Month’, and we are blessed in this part of the world to have lots of amazing places to spread our blankets and unpack our sandwiches. But let’s inject a few words of caution, and a couple of reminders… We do have the ‘right to roam’ in this country, meaning you can access the countryside without sticking to paths, but there are still rules to adhere to. Starting with the basics; firstly not all of the UK is classed as ‘open access land’ - areas marked on a map as ‘private (‘excepted land’)’ are restricted. You may be able to pass through but must use publicly marked footpaths. And even in ‘open access’ areas you should not horse ride, cycle, or drive a car or motorbike. You should not ‘wild camp’ either, without the permission of the land owner. Another obvious rule (or at least it SHOULD be obvious!) is to keep dogs on leads whilst you are near ANY livestock - it doesn’t matter how ‘good’ your beloved pooch is, a dog is a hunter by nature, and you have no idea if/when your pet may decide to follow his instincts. You should also keep your dog on a leash if you are visiting the countryside during the period between 1 March and 31 July to protect ground-nesting birds. Other common sense things to remember are to shut gates after you pass through them; be alert around livestock, particularly if they are with their young; and it shouldn’t need to be said but ‘TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME WITH YOU’! All the above being said, who remembers the picnics of childhood? The plaid rugs, Tupperware boxes of wilting salad that no one ate, sarnies

made of limp white sliced bread filled with potted meat (or sliced ham if you ‘were a bit posh’), lukewarm fizzy drinks and thermos flasks of stewed tea! If you were lucky there’d be something sweet to finish off the feast - a slice of home made cake, a bun, or perhaps a melting chocolate bar. What we never did was take a foil container full of charcoal, light it, burn a few burgers or sausages and then leave the smoking hot tray of coals behind to ignite woodland and moors alike. That my friends is a very 2020s phenomena, and one that needs to be stopped immediately IMHO. And breathe… Enjoy National Picnic Month sensibly, dig out the rugs, the picnic baskets, cool bags, Tupperware, and thermos flasks; invent new sandwich flavours - potted meat (whilst delicious) is so last century. Go a bit upmarket, buy a ‘posh’ loaf of bread, cut off the top, hollow it out and stuff the middle with all manner of loveliness before putting the top back on and wrapping the whole lot tightly in clingfilm. Put it in the fridge for a couple of hours with something heavy on top to press it down, then slice and enjoy al fresco… yum! Book Review
Most people will have a time in their youth when they think back and say “we were mad then, do you remember?” Nights out partying, then going straight to work next morning; or climbing mountains in blizzards, or crazy evenings in pubs or at rock concerts or festivals when everybody seems like your best friend or spending your pay packet on a mad shopping spree. Just fill in your own best moments. And remember the friends you did it with. Andrew O’Hagan’s Mayflies starts as a celebration of mad youth. His mayflies, Jimmy and Tully are lads from small-town Scotland who break free and head for a weekend of magical escape in Manchester in the 1980s. Yes it was possible! Jimmy, the narrator, has a lovely turn of phrase. The story is full of wit and energy and carries you along at breakneck speed. Thirty years pass and the two meet up again. The story turns into a different tale, but the author treats middle age with the same thoughtfulness and compassion as he does the craziness of youth. It’s a lovely, wise and emotional book about going at your life with all you’ve got and doing it with the people you love. Wonderful!

AT HOME WITH
THE MEADOWS
From hosting their own pizza nights to having visits from Pippa the dog, there’s plenty to enjoy at The Meadows care home. Registered Home Manager, Michelle Sanders, tells us more… Tell us about The Meadows care home We have two buildings set across from one another - Rose Court offers nursing care and Lavender Court offers residential care. Both have an amazing social community with a really homely environment. What kind of activities do you offer day-to-day? We like to find out what each resident’s best-loved hobby is and incorporate that into our plan. Music is an all-round favourite which everyone gets involved with, as well as our arts and crafts sessions. We also host pet therapy, gardening, games, chair exercises and baking groups. We’re also karaoke fanatics and they’re always such a laugh! How have you dealt with COVID-19? Our teams have been amazing at adapting to new ways of working. All residents and staff have been offered the COVID-19 vaccine - it has been very successful and we’ve
also installed a HEPA filter which has been proven to kill viruses and bacteria including covid-19. For more information on it, please visit our website below. Can friends and family visit? A resident can choose up to 5 designated visitors. All visits must be pre-booked. Alternatively, we have the facilities to have Zoom/Skype and WhatsApp video calls with families and friends. Please contact for more information. What awards do you have? The Meadows has achieved the Derbyshire Dementia Standards Award, which recognises “person-centred” care, delivered by well-trained staff. We support loved ones

Tips to help your dog post-lockdown! It’s great news for us all that COVID-19 restrictions are beginning to ease. However, this may not be the case for some dogs, especially if you’ve acquired a furry friend during the beginning of lockdown. For them, all they have known is a limited number of people who have been able to have close contact with them. Their walks have been quiet, with limited noise, people and traffic. They haven’t experienced new places, different areas and new smells. With changes becoming more apparent, what will post-lockdown life for dog’s entail? After all, it’s been an unusual year or so.
Slow and steady changes
Below are several tips to help your companion adjust to life post-lockdown.
Keeping your dog company
New situations Too many challenges will overwhelm them and can cause nervous behaviour which could develop into a fear phobia. It’s therefore a good idea to gradually introduce your dog to new situations. To prevent a fear phobia occurring, slowly build up new experiences by providing lots of praise and rewards. Linking new exposures to positive training methods will enhance your dog’s ability to cope. For example, instead of inviting friends into your house where your dog is not used to having strangers, you could arrange to meet up with friends and go for a dog walk which exposes your dog to new people paired with fun distractions.
Out and about Take a trip to an outdoor shopping centre where you and your dog can sit and watch the world go by. Take treats with you to reward calm behaviours in a busy environment. Staying too long may overwhelm your dog so it’s a good idea to keep visits short but often until they get used to different environments.
Have you been working from home during the pandemic? Slow changes to your routine will help your dog to adjust to their new way of life. Dogs often find it difficult to be left on their own as they’re very sociable, hence why they make great additions to the family. It’s a good idea to prepare them to cope without you at home. Start by leaving your dogs when they are sleeping, eating or playing – Try closing the door behind you and sitting in another room. If you haven’t had time to get your dog used to being left alone, or you’ve recognised that your dog is not coping well, don’t ignore the situation. Act quickly to prevent it from getting any worse. While you go out, ask family or friends to sit with your dog or arrange for a dog walker to walk your dog when you go back to work. This will limit the time your dog is left on their own. If you are going to be away for a long period of time possibly look into a doggy daycare facility.
Training Training classes can help you to deal with the adolescent teenage years of your dogs’ life. It is part of their normal development however, it can sometimes be a difficult time for dog owners as their beloved friend seems to have forgotten lots of what they were taught. A little help from a dog trainer can really help get your dog get back on track. At Scarsdale Vets, we offer a 4-week puppy training course. It’s designed to help with a range of puppy challenges such as toilet training, socialisation, play biting and chewing plus much more. For further information or to book, please call our Park Farm practice on 01332 554422. The last year has been challenging for us all. Let’s make sure your four-legged friend can cope with post-lockdown life.

This walk dates back to March 2014. We took the boys out last month to re-walk the route and found one part overgrown and blocked off, so to avoid you getting as badly nettled as we were we have re-routed a section. It’s a shame that public footpaths get blocked but we have to adapt and do the best we can and the walk is well worth it! It begins in Doe Hill Country Park, which has some lovely paths to explore before we pick up part of the Silverhill Trail. From here we head up along one of the Five Pits Trail paths before we loop back to return to Doe Hill Country Park.
5½ mile circular walk from Doe Hill Country Park A moderate walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2½ hours. Whilst a large part of the walk is trails and paths there are some fields to cross with uneven and potentially muddy sections so a good pair of boots or wellies is a must. There is a section of road and roads to cross, so please take care and keep dogs on leads at these times.

Start: Doe Hill Country Park Car Park, Doe Hill Lane, between Tibshelf and Stonebroom, DE55 6JS 1.
Take the path that leads directly from the car park (by the poop bag bin). Follow this path as it winds around until it joins with another path from the right, then take the next left, almost immediately, heading uphill. Follow this path again as it winds until it joins with another path from the right and again take the next left, almost immediately. Follow this path until it brings you to Alfreton Road.
2.
Cross the road and take the wide track (Gloves Lane) after a metal barrier on the other side. Follow this track for approximately 100 meters before taking the second of two paths on your left (the Silverhill Trail.
3.
Continue along the trail until you meet a sign on your right. Take the horse stile on your left towards the ‘Five Pits Trail’. Follow this path until you meet a cross roads, taking the first path on your right. (This route can be fairly muddy. If you are keen to avoid this, you can continue ahead here on the Five Pits Trail to take you to point 5.)
4.
Follow this path until it joins Saw pit lane, bearing left. After another 200 meters take a signposted footpath on your left. Follow the path as it joins Wetton Lane and follow until you reach the main road (B6014).
5.
Turn left here and cross the road at the crossing before joining the five pits trail directly ahead. Keep to the main path downhill until a crossing of a small path. Turn left on the small path, cross over a lane and pass through a width restrictor.
6.
Follow the path, ignoring steps on the right. Continue onto a road (Monsall Crescent) and keep ahead. At a T-junction, turn left and follow the road as it bends round to the right. Ignore roads leading off and then, as the road bends round to the right again, take a short road onto a wide track footpath off to the left, just before a play park.
7.
Keep ahead to the end of the path where there are turns left and right. Take the turn on the left to immediate pass through a gap in the hedge on your left. Turn right to walk alongside the field with the hedge on your right. At the bottom corner of the field pass through a kissing gate and turn left to walk alongside the field to cross a stile in the corner of the filed, onto Doe Hill Lane.
8.
Turn right here and follow Doe Hill Lane back to Doe Hill Country Park. Where appropriate cross the road to make use of the footpaths available.
This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
THE HOME OF CALM & CARING DENTISTRY
Has lockdown put your relationship under strain? As we were preparing to get married in 2012, we, as many couples do, went through a ‘Marriage Preparation’ course. Our Pastor, was fabulous and he helped us build a great foundation for our marriage, not least because he shared a lot of his knowledge of human psychology.
One concept that really made a deep and long lasting impression on us both, was that of ‘Blocked Goals’. He explained that if you look at what causes upset or discord in a relationship, it is almost always that one partner perceives that the other is standing in the way of something that they want (a goal if you will).
It plays out in an infinite number of ways… here’s an example. Let’s say you’ve had a busy day working and you’ve been thinking it would be great to snuggle up on the sofa and watch a film with your partner. That’s your goal for the evening. Your partner is also having a busy day and when they get home (or nowadays, leave their at home work station!), what’s on their mind is going for a run. After dinner you’re tidying up and thinking about what film to watch. Your partner appears in their running gear and announces they’re off for a run. You immediately feel let down… the way you saw the evening going was clearly not going to happen and it’s your partner that has ruined it. We can act as though our partner ‘should’ have read our minds and just known what we want. They come back from the run and by then you may have worked yourself into a real blue funk! You snap at them and the rest of the evening feels the weight of your simmering resentment… and yet
38
they have absolutely NO idea what they’ve done, because they had no idea that you had this ‘idyllic evening planned’ and even if they did, their idea of an idyllic evening today involved going for that much needed run!
In the past year most of us have spent much more time with our partners than we usually do - working from home for many of us… or even in retirement having our ‘out of home’ activities that we might do separately from our partners, curtailed. Of course, at the same time there’s genuinely been much to be concerned about from loss and grief: people, jobs, plans, finance, to the stress that comes with change (and hasn’t so much changed beyond recognition?). Finally, many of our usual outlets for stress have been denied us - like winding down on holiday, where you often find the ‘courtship’ in a relationship once again blossoms, fuelled by sunshine and freedom.
If you find yourself feeling irritated with your partner (or kids, or friends or family for that matter), take a moment to ask yourself, “what goal is being blocked here?”. They’ll usually be one. Then be honest with yourself; does your partner even know that they are blocking your goal and is it reasonable for you to ‘set’ goals for them as well as yourself without involving them? Setting ‘shoulds’ for other people usually ends in a butting of heads, tears or an unbalanced relationship where one person simply submits to the other. These are difficult times, let’s be kind to one another… starting with banning mind reading!

There’s lots of information on a food packet, some more useful than others. A lot of the words and phrases used on packets are just used as marketing tools. A lot of this information is not regulated and means nothing. Other strap lines are simply misleading. For example: Some foods are marketed as ‘Low Fat’. Many of these foods have been processed in such a way that means it has had a proportion of its fat content taken away. To keep it tasteful, other things must be added instead. A lot of the time the fat is substituted for sugar. Lots of it….
Nutrition Information:
This can be frustrating as the people choosing these ‘low fat’ products are the people that have in interest in their health, perhaps on a weight loss journey. Not only do some of these products have the same number of calories as some of their ‘full fat’ alternatives, because they are seen as ‘Healthy’, we are more likely to eat more of them! Yoghurts, cereals, and cereal bars are prime examples of this. Next time you’re out food shopping perhaps take a moment to check.
When comparing food items like for like, ie two packets of cereal, use the ‘per 100g’ column, not the “per serving column” on the food label, as different food manufacturers use different representations of serving size. This way you get an accurate comparison.
Lets have a look at the information we should pay attention to: Traffic Light System: Some foods have front of the pack nutrition labels. They use red, yellow, and green coding which tells you, at a glance, if the food has high (red), medium, (yellow) or low (green) amounts of total fats, saturated fats, sugar, and salt. Ingredient’s list: The higher up the list of ingredients a food is, the more of that ingredient there is. So, if a food item has got 10 ingredients and fat, oil, or sugar is in the top 3 items you may consider limiting the amount of this food.
42
On the back of the packet there will be a table titled Nutrition Information. Per 100g:
Serving Size: Some of the serving sizes can be unrealistic, so don’t to be fooled. Next time you have cereal, maybe measure it out to the manufacturers serving guidelines. You may be surprised! For more information visit: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-toread-food-labels/

Alfreton Cricket Club All is still positive with Alfreton Cricket Club. All 3 teams are still unbeaten within their respective leagues. The 1sts boast an impressive record of 7 wins out of 8 (the only non-winning game was cancelled due to bad weather) and sit top of Division 1. The 2nds have played 8, won 6 and had one cancelled and one abandoned. They currently sit 3rd in the table but sit 10 points below first and boast the only unbeaten record in the league- a 32-point deduction the only reason they don’t currently sit top. The 3rds like the 1sts sit top of their respective league, winning 3, getting 2 winning draws and having two games abandoned. They also have a game in hand over the rest of the table, which puts them in a fantastic position at this stage of the season. So far this season across the whole club, the three standout run scorers have been Owen Comins, Muhammad Zaroob and Ryan Newton, who have all scored over 300 runs so far. With the ball, Spencer leads the way with (19), followed by Hibbert (16) then Aldis and Robbins (13). The two top performances with the ball have also come in the last month since the last update, with Tom Young’s 6-28 against Cutthorpe
2nds in late May, followed by Spencer’s 5-21 against Wirksworth and Middleton 2nds. This upcoming month there is some huge fixtures coming up for each side. With the league coming to the halfway stage, all three times are determined to continue the winning streaks to strengthen their respective positions. Despite the disappointing outcome with the 2nds being deducted 32 points, hopefully the deficit will have been recovered and all three teams will be back to the top of the league. An excellent start to the season, confidence and morale is high with all involved at the club. If you want to come and show your support for your local club, come down to the ASHA Oval in Alfreton Park on Saturday afternoons. Sposorship opportunities are still available, if you want more information on how to do this, please contact the clubs via our social media pages or pop down to the club to speak to somebody. All support is hugely appreciated by everybody in the club.

Hi, my name is Paul Keenan and I am the business owner of Time for You Derbyshire North Domestic Cleaning. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself so that you can get a feel for the person behind the business. I also wanted to explain why I decided to launch my business back in September 2020. Prior to moving into the domestic cleaning world I was a Project Manager in IT. I have worked in various industries over the past 20 years or so, but in recent years, I found myself wanting a different work/life balance. Long hours and commuting meant I was spending less time with my wonderful family and I wanted to change that. I wanted to have more flexibility, be in control of my own working pattern. I wanted to spend more quality time at home, this was the key driver for me. One of my favourite things to do is walk my daughter to school every day! So, I took a leap of faith last year and left my job to set up this business. It hasn’t been easy, especially trying to launch a business in the middle of a global pandemic! However, I have never looked back, it

has been the best decision I have ever made and I believe the business will be a real success. Why domestic cleaning? I really enjoy meeting people, I have been lucky enough to meet lots of lovely people, both clients and cleaners. Just knowing that I am playing a part in helping others with their lifestyle, easing their worries, and taking away some of that strain and burden is a good feeling. Anyway, enough about me, I hope to hear from you at some point in the near future. Maybe I can help give you back some of that, much needed precious ‘Time For You’.

Chocoholics Unite for World Chocolate Who doesn’t love chocolate? Actually, me for one, I quite like the odd piece, maybe a choccy digestive with a cuppa, and I have been known to enjoy a slice of chocolate cake or two…But love it - no, in fact I could easily live without it. I have friends however (close friends) who are completely and unashamedly chocoholics. Many years ago, on a girly holiday to Portugal (remember when we could holiday abroad with ease?!) I recall sitting holding a Mars Bar for a friend to bite on whilst her nail polish dried. How’s that for helping out a mate?
(probably not dissimilar to the original Xocolātl) and used as a form of medicine for tummy complaints. Someone had the bright idea of adding sugar, or honey, to sweeten the concoction making it far more palatable, and within 100 years this ‘chocolate’ drink had a foothold across Europe.
But back to chocolate, love it, hate it, or just get along with it - what do you really know about its history and origins? I’ll give you a clue - chocolate didn’t start with Cadbury’s, Rowntree’s or Nestle, it is in fact a much, much older substance.
Chocolate as we know it today is a result of a Dutch chemist, Coenraad van Houten, working out in 1815 how to add an alkaline substance to reduce the bitterness; a few years later he developed a machine to take out roughly 50% of the solid ‘cacao butters’. In 1847 Joseph Fry learned how to make chocolate mouldable by adding back some of the cacao butter, and in 1875 Daniel Peter invented milk chocolate by mixing in a powdered milk developed by Henri Nestlé.
The word chocolate derives from the Aztec word Xocolātl and made itself into the English language via Spanish after the Spaniards conquered large parts of Central America in the 16th Century. Xocolātl was a fermented beverage created from the beans of the cacao trees, and evidence of it has been traced back to 1900 BC. The cacao tree’s beans are thought to have been used in medicinal and religious rites going right back to the earliest known Mesoamerican cultures - the Olmecs, to the Mayans, Inca, and Aztecs. Cacao beans were unknown to Europeans until the 16th century, and one Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés may have been the first European to encounter chocolate when he saw it being served in the court of Montezuma in 1519. Cacao beans finally made it to Spain later in the 16th century. Initially they were made into a bitter tasting drink
54
Back in the 1900s chocolate was expensive and out of the reach of the general populace, it took plantations in West Africa and slave labour to bring the costs down to a level the middle and lower classes could afford. And there you have it…the origins of chocolate, from the conquest of Mesoamerica to the slave trade…not as sweet as you may have hoped!

The latest of George’s Footballing Tales (the ballad of Billy McKay)
George’s grandad, Horace Twigg, a mainstay of Hilcote Hacademicals FC for many years, took great delight in sitting his young grandson on his knee and recalling many of the characters involved with the team. One tale that had young George entranced was of the big defender who had come down from Scotland to seek fame and fortune (but especially the latter!) playing football in England. This particular player was so well known in Scotland that the famous Dundee poet, William Topaz McGonigall, had composed a poem about him. For those unfamiliar with his work, it was McGonigall who, as every Scottish schoolchild knows, had written the following rhyme
The Tay, the Tay, the Silvery Tay Flows from Perth to Dundee every day Well, although perhaps not quite as well-known as that classic couplet, McGonigall’s tribute to this stalwart of the Hilcote defence was as follows:-
There was a lad from Dundee called Billy McKay The finest footballer in Scotland and.........that’s no lie Built like a brick s***house, man he was huge But on the fitba’ park, he was certainly no stooge He went to Glasgow and played for Queens Park A tough centre half, his bite much worse than his bark Opposing forwards were flummoxed, in total disorder And news of his prowess spread south of the Border Wanting to play at a higher level his ultimate desire
Local supporters were intrigued when they heard that McKay was coming to play for Hilcote. His reputation was of an uncompromising player who ‘took no prisoners’ and there were unconfirmed rumours of centre forwards in his native Scotland, who suddenly developed a severe illness or who mysteriously disappeared on the morning of a match against Queens Park. Despite this, they were shocked when they saw him for the first time on his home debut against Riddings Rovers. It may be a bit of a cliché, but he was a man mountain of a chap, probably weighing in excess of 20 stones. As a result of his bulk, his main contribution to the team was the difficulty opposing forwards had in simply getting past him. However, when he had the ball at his feet, he could deliver perfect passes to his Hilcote teammates and was a key factor in the team’s success of the 1890’s. McKay had been a player in demand and many of the top clubs in England had been keen to sign him. However, in addition to a wage of fifteen shillings a week – eat your heart out Kevin De Bruyne! - Hilcote had provided him with free accommodation and as much of Mildred Mycroft’s home cooking as he could manage to eat. That was the deal clincher as he liked his food and would often down five of her fidgety pies in one sitting. It is said - and to paraphrase Michael Caine ‘not a lot of people know this’ - that back in his native Dundee, Billy McKay was actually the physical inspiration for Desperate Dan.
He moved south to Hilcote................which is in Derbyshire

The exotic species of the Peaks and surrounding areas We love our native fauna and flora, but increasingly there are exotic wildlife species establishing across the region and in many cases we need to adjust and learn to appreciate them. A ‘weed’ is a plant in the wrong place but this is often a subjective label which we attach for various reasons; and of course many alien ‘weeds’ in the wild escape from our gardens and often natives in our gardens are viewed as ‘weeds’! Furthermore, a good number of the most familiar flowers and wild fauna like mammals and birds are not native and of these many are celebrated species firmly established as part of our natural heritage. Canada goose and common ring-necked pheasant for example, are widely recognisable birds making up a significant proportion of wild bird biomass in Britain, but are nonnatives. For example, in the Peak District the iconic mountain hare which is native to Britain is not native here, or at least not for a very long time. It was reintroduced by Victorian grouse-moor owners. By contrast the specially protected brown hare is not at all native to Britain but came with Celts for whom it had deep cultural significance. It was later reintroduced by the Romans and subsequently the Normans. So this is all very confusing. The fallow deer around Matlock and Darley Dale are also not at all native but are a Mediterranean animal and the dark (melanistic) animals of North Derbyshire are escapees from a famous medieval herd at Stanton-in-the Peak. Obviously the now familiar grey squirrel is a North American import, but then many of the now regionally-extinct red squirrels were in fact reintroductions by landowners. Chatsworth even had a population of dark– coloured reds which were of German origin and could be seen up to the 1970s.
With flowers things become even more complex with exotic cultivars and varieties of what are native plants escaping from gardens to establish in the wild. We see this with wild daffodil populations now mingling with garden narcissi; and most famously perhaps with so-called ‘Spanish bluebell’ spreading widely and in fact a hybrid of the British and Iberian or Spanish bluebells. A few thousand years ago these were all one species anyway…… Added to this situation is the way in which we subjectively like some species but not others. Botanists tend to like the beautiful and exotic yellow European leopard’s-bane but are less keen on North American skunk cabbage or Indian Balsam; all are colonising the Derbyshire River Derwent.
Some of these plants sneak in unseen until they appear everywhere and one of those is the few-flowered leek with its garlic-scented leaves and now spreading along roadsides and woodland edges everywhere. Its cousin, the three-cornered leek is not far behind. Both Danish and English scurvygrass are along all our major roads where winter salt is put down. These saltmarsh species are native to Britain but certainly not to Derbyshire and the Peaks. It does make you think!

Gardener’s Calendar
While you’re sitting there with your summer glass of something cool, admiring the results of this year’s hard work, remember one word – DEADHEAD. Not a romantic word admittedly, but really important. For more blooms, take their heads off as soon as the flower has gone over. Don’t let the plant set seed or it will think its job is done and not bother flowering again. Sweet peas especially need to be picked often and always take out their seed pods. Watch out that your pond, if you’re lucky enough to have one, doesn’t start to dry out if we have hot or windy weather. If you’ve got fish or amphibians it’s best to use rainwater to top up, as tap water has nutrients which will encourage algae to grow. But if you do use cold tap water add it gradually so it’s not too much of a shock to your wildlife. If there’s lots of weeds on the surface, twirl them out with a stick and leave them on the side overnight so beasties can crawl out.
r
Lots of this month’s plants will benefit from a bit of pruning back if they start to lose energy, and are flowering less. Cut back penstemons to just above a bud, and take growth back in hanging baskets to encourage another flush of blooms. But do feed them well after this small shock. Perennial geraniums will often have a second flowering if you take the flowering stalks back once they have died.
Top Tip If you want lavender to hang round the house, always take just opened stems which will give the best scent. Then hang in a cool dark place to let them dry. 06/11/2018 18:16

View from the Allotment
My efforts to show my grandson Tom that one can grow decent sweetcorn on Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) are progressing well and recently I planted out two varieties of sweetcorn (Swift, Earlybird) in a block of 50 plants. Yesterday I noted that some are already twice as high as when they went in. I’m sure I could see them actually growing as I sat having a mug of tea. I hilled them up as advised as sweetcorn are quite shallow rooted. I have a third variety (Northern extra sweet) waiting to go in. I will be in the sweetcorn business if they do well! As I wrote last month sweetcorn, like sugarcane, are C4 plants which are more drought tolerant than the other 95% of plants one finds growing on allotments-lettuce, chard, spinach, beetroot, etc. I got the sweetcorn in the ground just in time as it has been warm and allotment members are doing a lot of water shifting in these dry conditions to keep their C3 plants watered. Many members have greenhouses full of tomatoes which require regular visits so the plants don’t dry out. On my plot I have some outdoor tomatoes growing (Outdoor girl and First in the Field) for a good flavour. The LBLAA committee have just installed water troughs in place of taps to make filling watering cans much easier. On most plots runner beans and climbing French beans are twisting their way up canes in rows or as wigwams. One member has built a frame of galvanised wire fencing for his beans to climb up. My yellow dwarf French beans are just germinating in tubes in my mini-greenhouse at home and will need planting out shortly. We are well into the main growing and hoeing season now especially as the weather has warmed up. So I had better stop writing and get to the plot to do some weeding. For more information about joining LBLAA contact Mick the plot bailiff on 07725402033 and check our website at www. lblaa.co.uk
