From the Editor Hello Readers!! So, we’ve done explosive fireworks front covers for the November edition for years, so we fancied a change this year and have gone for ‘World Nursery Rhyme Week’. It is my thought that parents and kids of all ages haven’t had it easy over the last year or so and nursery rhymes promote the importance of childhood development and education in the early years of education & who doesn’t love to cast their minds back – I wonder, can you name them all? Check out our Facebook page to see the others. Here at Voice HQ we’ve got our Christmas spirit going this month! Check out our handmade wreaths on Facebook!! Now, don’t judge us too harshly, as some of us are more creative than others and some of us follow the rules more than others! Nevertheless, it was great fun to do and I’m sure you’ll all be surprised to learn, we all got a little bit competitive with each other over this one. Why not have a go yourself; based on the next panic buying situation being toilet rolls (again!), we should all have plenty of tubes left over!!! Whilst we’re talking Christmas, the next edition is the last one of 2021 – thank crikey for that – how many more years can

we say ‘next year will be better’?! Although, in fairness, 2021 was significantly better than 2020 for many of us, but I am splitting hairs! Anyway, I digress – this is your last call for any community notices or events or anything Christmas related to be posted. If you have anything you want to tell people about, now is your time, get in touch today. Oooh, I also forgot to mention last month that we launched our 11th Magazine in the Clay Cross area. Eleven mags for eleven years, each year is beyond my wildest expectations, and I am thankful for our lovely readers, fantastic advertisers and contributors and the best team in the world. I think we might need to recruit some new team members next year at this rate with the plans I have in mind but we’ll need some special people to fit in with this crowd! Happy Reading,

x Emily

The Dark Side of Nursery Rhymes Nursery rhymes…nonsense for kids, or coded messages containing dark undertones? Read on to see why the latter may be closer to the truth than we would maybe like to think! “Nursery rhymes”, with their distinctive sing-song rhythms and melodies; date back centuries, as far back as the 14th Century in fact. Modern childhood psychologists believe they can help a child’s mental development and spatial reasoning, but it is doubtful our antecedents were thinking in those terms when the majority of the ditties were composed. Let’s have a quick look at a few of the best known rhymes: Baa Baa Black Sheep refers to the wool tax imposed by Edward I, when new rules said a third of the cost of a sack of wool went to him, another went to the church and the last to the farmer. In the original rhyme, the ‘little boy who lived down the lane’ ended up with nothing! The phrase ‘black sheep of the family’ stems from the fact that the wool from black sheep could not be successfully dyed and thus had less value. Mary, Mary Quite Contrary is believed to be about Queen Mary (aka Bloody Mary) and concerns the torture and murder of Protestants, the garden being an allusion to graveyards full of Protestant martyrs, whilst “silver bells” were thumbscrews and “cockleshells” are thought to be instruments of torture which were attached to male genitals. Nice. Not! Oranges and Lemons describes a condemned man’s journey towards his execution in London, passing various churches on his way. Rock-a-bye Baby alludes to the rumour that the son of King James II was actually another man’s son, smuggled into the delivery room in order to ensure a Catholic would once more ascend to the throne of England. An early recorded version of the rhyme ends with the footnote “This may serve as a warning to the Proud and Ambitious, who climb so high that they generally fall at last.”

6

Ring a Ring o Roses, we’re all familiar with the idea that this rhyme, and the associated little dance so beloved of kids, is connected with the Great Plague of 1665. The ‘rosie’ being the distinctive rash that developed on the skin of sufferers, and the ‘posies’ referring to the scented flowers required to camouflage the hideous stench of decaying flesh and rotting bodies. Even the seemingly innocuous ditty Ladybird, Ladybird, fly away home, may refer to the persecution of Catholics in the 16th and 17th century, when Catholic priests were often burnt at the stake. Whilst Lucy Locket is actually connected to an argument between two prostitutes in the 18th century! So much time has elapsed since these nursery rhymes were first written that modern day mothers singing them with their children can be forgiven for not realising the death, destruction, and darkness so many of them allude to. And anyway - who really cares these days, they’re fun, kids enjoy then and they’re part of our heritage and tradition. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Codnor Kitchen

review! On Thursday 7th October, The Voice team were kindly invited to Codnor Kitchen to sample some of their fantastic menu. This modern kitchen is situated on the heart of Codnor High Street offering both Eat in and Take Away service. The owners are business partners Chris & Steve and Chris also owns the village pub, The Codnor Inn. During the lockdown when pubs were opened for takeout food, Chris had a massive response to the food he started to offer. However, as the Condor Inn is only a wet public house, after lockdown Chris was no longer able to serve food but decided he still wanted to offer this service to the public and so he opened Codnor Kitchen. At Codnor Kitchen the emphasis is on locally sourced products wherever possible. They use the local butcher in Ripley and fresh fruit and vegetables from the Ripley Market. Below are some of the delicious menu items which the team sampled:

Club sandwich - on white toasted bread packed with an enormous amount of filling, very tasty and served with side salad

The Codnor House Burger - thick succulent beefburger with smoked bacon and cheese, served with onion rings, chips and topped with a pickle and a side salad Crispy Chicken Stacker Burger - Ample amounts of delicious chicken, onion Rings, smoked bacon and salad served with American style fries Piri Piri Chicken wings – Paul did comment to say that these were as good as a very famous chicken restaurant! They come with a choice of very hot, hot or mild homemade, Piri Piri Sauce and are served with Piri Piri seasoned fries

Panini – Tuna melt with homemade coleslaw Mini personal Pizza ‘8’- pepperoni, peppers, mushrooms, chicken and onion served with chips Fish Fingers cobs – A spot of old school - served with chips and homemade tartar sauce

Our team were all delighted with their tasty fare, would certainly recommend it, and wish Chris all the best with this new venture.

The Arkwright Society returns for their 7th Industrial Revolution Conference on Saturday 13th November 2021 via Zoom.

This year, leading academics will discuss what triggered and sustained innovation in the first Industrial Revolution, with one talk focusing on modern entrepreneurship as a point of comparison. Our first speaker, Professor Joel Mokyr, Department of Economics, Northwestern University, Illinois and Sackler Professorial Fellow at Tel Aviv University, will talk on the ‘Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution: A Neglected Nexus’, to show how the development of applied science interacted with industrial change and expansion. Professor Emeritus John Styles of the University of Hertfordshire will discuss ‘Re-fashioning Industrial Revolution: Fibres, Fashion and Technical Innovation in British Cotton Textiles, 1630-1780’. He will consider how the progress from hand spinning to the Arkwright water frame and beyond was shaped by the changes in fashion in the 1760s-1770s.

Arkwright’s career might have come to move from Barber and Wigmaker to Machine Maker and Industrial Mogul. Dr Karolina Hutkova, London School of Economics will talk to us on The English East India Company’s Silk Enterprise in Bengal, 1750–1850. She will discuss how technology transfer to the Bengal silk industry came from the same Italian silk factories that influenced the Derby Silk Mill and subsequently the ‘Silk Town’ of Macclesfield, and the effect that had on the Bengal workers. Professor Simon Mosey, Director of the Haydn Green

Institute for Innovation and The Arkwright Society returns forEntrepreneurship their at Nottingham University will discuss ‘Building a legacy of ingenuity through entrepreneurial organisations’ 7th Industrial Revolution Conference This talk will help us to consider how the minds of

the early innovators might have worked, by reviewing more recent innovation and entrepreneurship.

Dr Gill Cookson, Visiting Research Fellow, School of History at Leeds University will address Innovation in the Time of Arkwright through a contextual approach to this period. This will offer a view of how Richard Tickets are priced at £20! Book your place today at www.cromfordmills.org.uk/event/7th-annual-industrialrevolution-conference/ There will be 20 free places for students if they email Tricia Trice at ttrice@arkwrightsociety.org.uk from their university email - on a first come first served basis!

NOTTINGHAM and DERBYSHIRE We are successfully claiming compensation for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire workers who transferred OUT of their work pension scheme.

COTGRAVE COLLIERY

Many workers were persuaded to transfer out of their work pension scheme to a private scheme which paid considerably less! This was bad advice and many retired workers or their widows have lost out!

Example 1 - £88,000

Example 2 - £68,000

Mr P. a miner from EDWALTON, worked at COTGRAVE COLLIERY. In 1991, after the pit was shut down, he was persuaded by an agent of PRUDENTIAL to transfer his miners pension to them. When he retired he realised he was getting less than his friends who kept their BRITISH COAL PENSION. Compensation £88,359.

Mr M. from WOLLATON worked for EAST MIDLANDS ELECTRICITY BOARD. In 1993, after it was privatised, he was advised by an agent of ABBEY LIFE to transfer his pension to them. When he retired he realised he was getting less than his friends who kept their E.M.E.B. Compensation £68,699.

Example 5 - £48,000

Example 6 - £53,000

Mr G. from CHESTERFIELD worked on the bins for DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL. After he was made redundant in 1991, he was persuaded by an independent financial advisor to transfer his pension to STANDARD LIFE. When he retired he noticed he was getting less than his friends who kept their LOCAL GOVERNMENT pension. Compensation £48,000.

Mr N. from CHILWELL worked as a driver for NOTTINGHAM CITY COUNCIL. In 1992 he was persuaded by a sales agent of PEARL ASSURANCE (now PHOENIX LIFE) to transfer his pension to them. When he retired he realised he was getting a much lower pension than his friends who kept their LOCAL GOVERNMENT PENSION. Compensation £53,143.

Jess Hammond - Strikes Out for the World Championships We are excited to share an interview with Jess Hammond, a 15 year old Mixed Martial Arts competitor from Mansfield Here at Voice Magazines we like to shout about the up and coming sports people in the area, and this month we’d like to introduce you all to Jess Hammond a 15 year old mixed martial art (MMA) competitor from Mansfield. Jess trains at the Alliance Derby gym in Riddings with her coach Lee Bown and, following MMA try outs at Birmingham NEC on Saturday 2nd October, has qualified for a place on the EMMAA team (English Mixed Martial Arts Association) which will see her compete next year in the World Championships. Jess fought twice and was the only girl on the day to win both her fights, the first by decision and the second by a submission in the second round. We asked Jess a few questions about her journey so far:

How did you first get into fighting? I was introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the age of six and I really enjoyed it, and then a couple of years ago I discovered Mixed Martial Arts - MMA, which incorporates boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai (a Thai martial art). With MMA I learned how to strike an opponent which I’d never done before and I am also able to bring in my Jiu Jitsu grappling skills. I now prefer MMA over other fighting disciplines as it has a variety of martial arts combined so there is more to learn and master.

How much training do you put in each week? On average I train at least five days a week, unless I’m training for a competition then I would train every day. Some of the days I do an hour and half session of kickboxing, followed by an hour and half session of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I also help coach the junior team which I enjoy very much.

What sort of things do you do in training sessions and do you enjoy it? At the start of the sessions we do warm up and fitness training, followed by technique and lastly, we have sparring where we can practice the new techniques we’ve learned. I really enjoy my training and coaching although sometimes it can be quite tough, especially when training for a competition but the support of my team at Alliance Derby pushes me through!

Tell us why you think more young people your age should become more involved in sports. I think more young people my age should do more sports as it helps them form a routine and something to work towards and it also helps with overall fitness and discipline. A huge well done to Jess for qualifying for the World Championships, we’ll follow her progress and who knows, we could be reporting on her successes for a long time to come! As Jess’s career progresses, she will be looking for sponsorship to help her fund her development, if you’d like to help let us know and we’ll pass on your details.

This month we go back 4 years to October 2017 to revisit a perfect autumnal walk. This walk has a bit of everything. We begin walking through a country park with some great views before looping round to pass the historic and picturesque Annesley All Saints Church and then onto the pretty Annesley Forest. A mid length walk which should take you and your dog around 2 1/2 hours to complete. There is a mix of terrain, with some uneven and muddy bits, particularly depending on the weather so please wear appropriate footwear. There is one particularly busy road so be careful, keep dogs on leads if unsure and as always, follow the countryside code.

5-MILE CIRCULAR WALK FROM NEWSTEAD & ANNESLEY COUNTRY PARK

START: NEWSTEAD AND ANNESLEY COUNTRY PARK (CAR PARK, OPPOSITE THE PIT MICROPUB) TILFORD ROAD NEWSTEAD NG15 0BS.

34

1.

Standing with your back to the car park entrance, walk straight ahead to pass through a large wooden gate, pass by a signboard reading ‘Newstead and Annesley Country Park’ on your right and then continue along a wide and well laid path.

2.

After a short distance you will pass a lake and a building on your right. Pass through a gap, continue straight ahead along the wide path climbing gently uphill, to pass a second and then a third lake on your right.

3.

After the third lake you will begin to descend for quite some distance until reaching a large metal gate. Pass by the gate and then pass beneath an arch bridge. After some distance pass by another large metal gate and continue ahead to reach a road.

Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

4.

Turn right and continue until reaching a T junction of roads. Turn right and after a short distance turn right again along ‘Moseley Road’.

5.

Continue along Moseley Road to the very end and then turn left along another road. Follow this road to the very end and then turn left once more onto ‘Byron Road’. After a short distance turn right along a road signposted for ‘Parish Hall’. After a short distance pass the Parish Hall on your right and then continue straight ahead along a tarmac footpath.

6.

7.

8.

After a short distance pass through a metal width restrictor and then continue straight along the path going uphill. Near the top of the hill pass through some concrete post and, almost immediately, turn left along a footpath opposite a bungalow (No.9) to pass between some houses. Continue straight ahead to walk across the top of a cul-de-sac and then towards a block of garages. Thread between the garages and pass through a metal chicane to continue along a footpath. After a short distance pass by a graveyard on your right and then a church on your left. Immediately after the church cross over a crossroads of footpaths and continue straight ahead along a footpath into some trees. Continue downhill until you reach a road. Turn left along the road for a short distance and then turn right onto a lane going uphill passing a sign on your right reading ‘No unauthorised vehicles’.

9.

At the top of the hill the lane bends sharp right. At this point continue straight ahead to pass through a gap onto footpath heading into the trees. Ignoring all the other paths to the left and right, continue straight ahead along this path. Eventually the path bends around to the right. Continue for a short distance to pass by a large metal gate and to a main road.

10.

Cross straight over, pass by a large metal gate and then continue along a well laid path. Follow the path around to the left and then continue straight ahead going through woodland. After some distance you will reach a major junction of paths. Take the left option going gently uphill and then continue straight ahead.

11.

Continue on the main path for some distance and then pass by a metal gate to reach a main road. Cross straight over the road pass by another metal gate and continue straight ahead along a footpath going through woodland.

12.

Continue along this path for some distance until the path splits in two. Take the left split, continue straight ahead and then continue to go steep downhill. At the bottom of the hill you pass through what is often a very wet boggy patch of land making the path ahead difficult to follow. Be sure to continue straight ahead going uphill.

13.

Ignoring all other paths to the left and right, go straight to the very top of the hill and then drop back down the other side. At the bottom of the hill and at a crossroads of footpaths turn right along a well laid footpath. After a short distance pass by a large metal gate and to a road.

14.

Cross straight over the road to pass through a wooden chicane and onto a recreation ground. Continue straight ahead passing a skate park on your right and then pass through a wooden swing

gate onto a road.

15. Turn left to follow the main road, ‘Tilford Road’, with terraced houses on the left and then after some distance pass’ Newstead Centre’ on your right. After a short distance cross over a railway line and then after a very short distance turn left back into the car park. This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Winter Weather Tips for Dogs Despite the dangers winter can sometimes present, winter walks with your dog can be safe and enjoyable providing you take the necessary precautions. Take a look at our nine top tips to keep both you and your dog safe while walking during the winter months. Consider a coat for dog During the winter months, it’s important to keep your dog warm. Let your dog’s coat grow and for short-haired breeds, senior dogs and puppies, it may be worth investing in a winter dog coat.

ID tag and microchipped It’s important to ensure that your dog is wearing a collar, ID tag and is microchipped. It’s also vital to ensure your microchipping database is up to date with your address and contact details.

Winter walks Walking your dog during the cold, dark mornings and nights can present its challenges; poor visibility being one of them. If you’re walking when it’s dark, it’s a good idea to make sure your dog is visible either with a flashing collar light or a highvis jacket.

Returning from a walk When you and your dog return from a winter walk, remember to wipe your dogs’ legs, feet and stomach. The grit from roads and dampness from rain or snow can irritate their skin.

It’s important you’re also dressed for winter. Think about your own footwear when you’re venturing out with your dog and make sure you’re just as visible as your dog. Beware of deep snow The British weather is often unpredictable. Keep your dog on a lead if it’s snowing. There could be some deep pockets of snow or snow which maybe covering up some unsafe areas.

Don’t leave your dog in a car Leaving dogs in cars is dangerous all year round, even in winter. You should never leave your dog unattended in a car. Frozen ponds Don’t let your dog walk across frozen ponds. The ice may not be thick enough to take the weight of your dog. Anti-freeze is poisonous Even the smallest amounts of anti-freeze can have a very harmful and it can often have a fatal effect on your pet. Keep anti-freeze well out of pets’ reach and clean up any spillages right away. Check leads, collars and harnesses It’s a good idea to check items such as leads, collars and harnesses are all in working order. They can often get damaged by the winter weather e.g. wet weather may make metal clips rust. If you’re having difficulty choosing the correct sized harness or coat for your dog, please visit our pet care retrial store at Pride Veterinary Centre where our friendly retail team will be able to provide advice.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY(Part One) Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall? It’s the time that every Santa has a ball. Does he ride a red nosed reindeer? Does he turn up on his sleigh? Do the fairies keep him sober for a day? We all are aware of the religious origins of Christmas but what of the traditions that surround it? Do you hang up a Stocking like many do? What lies behind this particular tradition? Well, according to legend, the original Saint Nicholas put gold coins in the stockings of three poor sisters. One night, the girls left their stockings drying over the fireplace. Saint Nicholas knew the family was very poor, so he threw three bags of gold coins down the chimney. The money landed in the sisters’ stockings. Since then, children have hung up their Christmas stockings on Christmas Eve, hoping to find them filled with gifts in the morning.

Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking towards his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles. The custom spread all over the world. The Christmas tree first arrived in England in 1841. It was brought over from Germany by Prince Albert to remind him of his homeland. The royal tree was decorated with hand-blown glass ornaments, and soon the custom was copied by families around the country.

What then of the Christmas Tree? Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians b r o u g h t decorated trees into their homes. Some built

Another Bright Star .....

Around 50 years ago I first started going to The Gate Inn at Swanwick.

trip to the casino or arrange the Christmas party and Kath had never been so happy.

The landlord and landlady were Roy and Betty Mitson and they looked after us young teenagers very well. They were a bit like second parents and some of my pub mates became almost as close as brothers.

Sadly Rob died some years ago of a heart condition and although Kath was heartbroken she never lost her smile.

But there was one shining star often to be found sitting at a table with her husband Doug and friends Dave, Pearl, Colin and May. She was a dark haired beauty with a flashing smile and glamorous style and was to become my “big sister” in the pub. Her name was Kath Nicholas. I don’t recall her ever having a bad word for anyone, only ever a smile an offer of help or little joke. I remember how she loved ABBA at the time and was often found at the jukebox looking for the latest release. Doug and Kath were the most glamorous couple in the area at that time. Doug had a white Lotus Cortina of which we were all envious but not quite as envious as we were of his gorgeous wife. Doug and Kath eventually went their separate ways and in time Kath re married and became Kath Earl. Kath and her new husband, Rob, were Always the ones to organise the trip to the dogs or organise a

Some years later Kath found love again in a guy she described as “my lovely Phil” A few years ago cancer struck and Kath had to undergo a savage operation and just when we thought she was over that she was struck down by the most horrific illness of all, Motor Neurone Disease. The last time I saw Kath the condition had taken away her ability to speak and walk but the one thing left was the thing that never went away....her glamorous smile. Kath died this morning. Her family have lost a wonderful partner, mother and grandmother. I have lost a beloved friend and the world has lost another bright star. Sleep tight Kath xx

CHRISTMAS FLOWER WREATH MATERIALS: • Cardboard: a piece large enough for the size of the wreath you’d like to create. • Empty Toilet Roll Holders (approx. 6) • Green and Red Paint (or any colours you’d like to use, try bright colours , or whatever colours you have. • Glue

MAKE YOUR OWN!

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. On the cardboard draw a circle – I used a dinner plate to draw round. 2. Draw a smaller circle inside the large one – I used a tea plate to draw round. 3. Cut out the centre of the circle – I find it easier to cut the centre circle into quarters, top to bottom and side to side, you are then cutting out smaller pieces. Take care not to cut into the main circle. 4. Paint the circle in the colour of your choice and set to one side to dry. 5. Paint the inside and outside of the toilet rolls with your choice of colours, 3 rolls in each contrasting colour, and set to one side to dry. I didn’t paint mine until after I cut the strips which is time consuming. 6. When the rolls are dry squash them flat and cut them into approximately 1 cm strips – I got 10 strips from each roll i.e., 2 flowers. 7. Put a small amount of glue (approximately ½ to 1cm ONLY) on one side at the bottom of one strip, stick another strip to it, and repeat to stick another strip, 3 in total. If you have a spring peg or a bulldog clip it will help to clip them together to dry. It saves you having to hold them. N.B. Make sure you are only sticking a small section at the bottom of each strip. PICTURE 1. 8. Do the same with 2 strips. Each flower will have 5 strips (petals) so carry on and glue all your flowers as described above. 9. When the glue on the strips has dried push the ends of the cut strips towards each other to reshape them into petal shapes and stick the 3 petals to the 2 petals, to complete your 5 petal flower. Clip them together to allow the glue to dry. PICTURE 2 10. Place your first row of flowers around the ring and make sure you are happy with the arrangement before gluing them. Place the centre of the flowers so that they are in contact with the inside edge of the ring. PICTURE 3 11. When the glue on the first layer is dry, place the second row of flowers over the top. The centre of the flower on the second row sits at the point where the petals of the flowers on the first row touch the next flower’s petal. Again, make sure you are happy with the arrangement before gluing 12. Leave to dry and add thread, ribbon or twine to hang it. PICTURE 4 13. Embellish with whatever you have to hand, gems, pearls, stars, glitter ribbon, let your imagination run riot and HAVE FUN! PICTURE 5

Remember, Remember… …the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason, and plot. We see no reason, Why gunpowder treason, Should ever be forgot! We’ve all heard the opening verse of that nursery rhyme before, haven’t we? And we know it refers to Guy Fawkes, the” gunpowder plot” and the “celebrations” on Bonfire Night. But how many of us know the real history behind the lighting of bonfires and the unleashing of fireworks each 5th of November? Let’s spin back over 400 years to a time when British Catholics were persecuted for not adhering to the Protestant religion imposed by Henry VIII. In 1603 British Catholics rejoiced when James II replaced Queen Elizabeth I (Henry’s daughter) on the throne of England; born a Catholic and allegedly married to one, the assumption was that life for followers of Catholicism would improve - they didn’t, if anything King James cracked down even further. English Catholics were furious and several plots to overthrow the King, the Protestant Church, and the Government were hatched, including the now infamous “Gunpowder Plot.” The plot was hatched in a pub called “The Duck and Drake” in London, Robert Catesby, Guy Fawkes, Tom Wintour, Jack Wright, and Thomas Percy met, and Catesby proposed a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Fawkes was born in York in 1570; by 1605 he was using the Spanish name Guido following 10 or more years spent fighting Protestants in the Netherlands for Catholic Spain. The plotters leased a cellar which ran under the Houses of Parliament and Guido (Guy) Fawkes, under the alias John Johnson, acted as its caretaker overseeing the storage of barrels of gunpowder. On November 5th, 1605, during the state opening of Parliament, when the King, his son and the elected MPs would all be present, Fawkes was to light a fuse to the stockpiled gunpowder before fleeing by boat across the Thames. The other

50

plotters were to kidnap the King’s daughter and in due course marry her off to a Catholic consort. Sadly for the conspirators, someone tipped off a Catholic sympathiser advising them not to attend the state opening and thus the authorities were alerted. Fawkes was caught red handed in the cellars with 36 barrels of gunpowder and matches in his pocket. He was taken to the Tower of London and tortured. All but four of the others were also arrested, tried, and sentenced to death by hanging, drawing, and quartering. Catesby, the real ringleader, avoided arrest but died in a shootout with the military. So, where did the tradition of ‘burning a guy on the bonfire’ come from? In 1606 an Act of Parliament was passed naming 5th November as a day of celebration; Londoners began to light bonfires and in keeping with the anti-Catholic sentiment of the time, would burn an effigy of the Pope. Over time, this changed to become an effigy of Guy Fawkes and the day became known as “Guy Fawkes Day.” Hero, villain, or martyr - it’s a question of perspective, isn’t it? Mike’us sings M

I think he might be having us on you know... Mike is always glad to hear from you at mike. musings@outlook.com

Yet another of..........George’s Footballing Tales George had been sent to the pantry – it was where Grandad Horace kept his supply of ‘little treats’ - and bringing back a packet of Spangles for the two of them to share, asked “What was the most exciting game that you saw at the Harena?” Horace thought for a minute and started, “Nah then lad, Ah reckon it must ha been the FA Cup replay agin South Wingfield Wanderers back in 1895.” NB – for the benefit of all, I’ll drop the verbatim account as the broad Derbyshire dialect used by Horace might go against local parents’ desire to have their kids talk ‘proper’. On Wednesday 13th February 1895, the residents of B Winning (Hilcote to you and me!), and many surrounding villages, were beside themselves with excitement. After a draw the previous Saturday, they now knew that the winners would face the mighty Notts County, current holders of the Cup, at their Trent Bridge ground in the next round. The match was scheduled for a 2.30pm start, to allow for extra time should the teams not be separated after 90 minutes. Local schools allowed pupils to attend and this, combined with many colliers coming straight to the match at the end of their ‘early’ shift, led to the kick off being delayed by twenty minutes, as a record crowd assembled at the Harena. This was to prove crucial. At full time, the score was 2-2, and light was beginning to fade. Before extra time could begin, a big black cloud appeared over Blackwell,

slowly moved east, and it became clear that total darkness would soon envelop the Harena. Calling the two captains together, the umpire suggested that the tie be settled upon the toss of a farthing. Clarrie Flint, Hilcote captain, wasn’t having this and asked for five minutes grace as he had a possible solution. This was granted and he instructed his players to quickly spread out and make a specific request of the spectators lining the touchline. As they returned in the gathering gloom, Clarrie asked the opposition to line up for kick off and for the umpire to restart the game. They looked puzzled, but at the high-pitched sound of the whistle, the Harena was instantly bathed in bright light. George, understandably captivated, wanted to know how this apparent miracle had been achieved. It was no miracle. The players had apparently asked colliers on the touchline to strap their Humphry Davy Safety Lamps to the foreheads of many of the boys present, and then lift the youngsters onto their shoulders. As the whistle sounded, lamps were switched on and hey presto, Hilcote Harena became the first stadium in the entire world to stage floodlit football! Not only that, Hacademicals went on to score the winner and secure that tie at Notts County. George takes pride in the fact that his grandad was there to witness footballing history being made and is more than pleased to share this little known story with you!

BELPER MARLIN SWIMMING CLUB Ever thought of competitive swimming as a sport for you or your children? Belper Marlin Swimming Club is a competitive swimming club based at Belper Leisure Centre but also train at Alfreton and Heanor leisure centres. All teaching is based upon the Swim England National plan for teaching swimming, and we employ a lead teacher at the club assisted by volunteers. The first competitions at this level would be at the club sprints in June and the club championships in November each year. As they improve their skills and stamina the athletes are encouraged to enter open meets and county championships. The club also employs 4 professional coaches. Mike Brett is the Chief coach, with a Level 3 qualification who captained English Universities in 1982, and continues to swim having held National individual master’s records and Team World records. Mike has been coaching at the club for over 20 years now. The ethos in the coaching team is to encourage each swimmer to achieve their potential. This

is done with a huge emphasis on technical skills on all strokes as well as dives and turns. This means less unfocused length swimming and more coaching feedback and fun. Using this approach Marlins have gone from strength to strength. Belper Marlin SC has been in Division 1 of the West Midlands National Swimming League for the past 7 years, they regularly win multiple medals at county and Midland level. We have also had a regular stream of National qualifiers and even medallists from the club. Marlins is a club from a small market town, and we punch well above our weight in our swimming achievements. We have a maximum of about 9 hours training in the pool per week but are also part of the Derbyshire development pathway, encouraging our elite swimmers to train with Derventio Excel [county squad]. They then compete for DX at Midland level and above but still swim counties and Arena league for Marlins. Ross Davenport is our most famous swimmer having won 2 gold medals in the 2006 Commonwealth games.

Book Review

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is likely to be one of the strangest books you’ll read this year. It’s the winner of this year’s Women’s Prize – presumably because it’s written by a woman rather than about women, although there is one strong female character. There’s been lots of promotion of this novel over the last few months and it might be fair to say it’s marmite. You’ll either love the mystery, the mind-games and the maze-like quality of the story, and there’s a lot of that to love, or you’ll be irritated and bored. Without giving too much of the story away – no spoilers here – it’s about Piranesi, who lives in the House, a huge world-like labyrinth of halls, full of statues, crashing tides, birds – and one other living human being, appropriately called The Other. They’re in search of Truth – or at least a version of it, but while that is going on the reader realises this is a book about things maybe not being what they seem. The descriptions are lovely and the story intriguing and all the time it leaves you questioning your understanding of what’s going on. Whether you will enjoy it probably depend on whether you enjoy puzzles and the sort of magic which messes with your perception of things. It’s certainly interesting.

Gardener’s Calendar

We’re largely getting to the stage of making things ready for next year’s garden, while still looking forward to some over-winter colour and looking after the most vulnerable areas.

If you have parts of the lawn which get waterlogged during winter you can spike the area properly now and brush grit or sharp sand into the holes to help improve drainage. You’ll also help the lawn by raking up fallen leaves which block out light and harm grass growth. As much as possible also take piles of leaves away from bushes and shrubs otherwise slugs and snails might use them for overwintering. Which isn’t to say you shouldn’t create wildlife habitats around the garden, just maybe not round your prize perennials. If you’re wanting to divide and replant perennials which flower before next July – the likes of oriental poppies or lungwort – it’s best to do them now. Replant the same day if you can so they don’t suffer too much shock. Roses planted in exposed spots, should be pruned now to stop windrock over the winter. Cut off most of this year’s growth and if there’s any sign of blackspot, don’t put cuttings in the compost as it will transmit the disease. Tulip bulbs should be planted by the end of November. And hopefully there will be a good bit of colour this winter if you plant outdoor cyclamen, (not the big showy ones, they’re not usually hardy enough to survive the cold), hellebores and winter pansies.

Top Tip

Bubble wrap your pots to stop them cracking. Not all pots are safe from frost.

Peak Deer on the Move

The Peak District Eastern Moors especially Big Moor have become well known for their feral populations of red deer – our largest and most magnificent British land mammal. Numbers have grown since the 1980s and with management culling on the core site of Big Moor there are probably somewhere between 200 and 300 animals across the estate. However, in the wider region beyond Big Moor, animals have dispersed over a considerable area; probably in part due to disturbance through the cull, which naturally makes the animals very nervous. Overall, the numbers are still rising and the area over which the red deer now roam has increased eastwards into Sheffield and Dronfield, northwards too, and Photo by Steve Smith west towards Eyam. Of course, there is a further western Peak population around the Roaches and the Staffordshire Moors. Historically the other main deer species you might see in and around the Peak was the back (melanistic) herd from Stanton deer park, and down into Matlock and Darley Dale. This is a medieval herd and well documented.

However, things are changing and there is another deer now spreading and increasingly commonly reported. This is the roe deer. Occurring mostly in smaller groups than the other two and considerably smaller, roe can be mistaken for young or female red deer and so wherever possible, records are best supported by a photograph. Twenty years ago, roe deer were very uncommon in the Peak but increasingly seen in the eastern lowlands both north and south of the area. Nevertheless, since then the roe deer have spread often unnoticed but to a point where they are now rather common. Tending to feed in fields and to hide away in woodland and scrub, the roe can be around but not detected. They are quite frequently observed around woodland

edges such as near the Grouse Inn at Froggatt, but are also penetrating deep into urban areas such as in the heart of Sheffield. In both town and country, they will turn up in back gardens and along roadsides and seem quite bold and unaffected by disturbance. In Sheffield for instance, they have been seen regularly around urban Meersbrook and Heeley, and find shelter in woods, cemeteries, and along watercourses too. In farmland and countryside with scattered woodlands, the roe deer is now the most likely to be spotted. From the White Peak to Bakewell and the Wye and Derwent valleys, the roe is present and doing well. Often though, they will see you before you see them and will be off like a shot. Moving between sites under cover of darkness, they can move into the suburbs and rural villages without detection. However, listen out for their distinctive barking which can be heard at night for over a quarter a mile or more. The final deer species that you might encounter locally is the exotic Asian muntjac; seen and heard to the east and south, but are generally rare in and around the Peak District.

View from the Allotment

The mild spell of warm sunny autumn weather we have been having has been welcomed by the chap on our allotment site who has a mini-vineyard. The vines have put more sugar into the grapes as shown by the weekly readings he and his daughter-in-law have made using a refractometer, an instrument that reads the sugar content of grape juice giving some idea of when to harvest the grapes. Apparently his Solaris grapes were already at a high sugar content by the beginning of October like those grown commercially by nearby Amber Valley Wines. So they had already been harvested and were fermenting. I found them recently harvesting Rondo and Regent red grapes helped by his grandson; both varieties are very suitable for our area. They had collected about 15kg of mixed red grapes, which his grandson was then going to crush with his bare (well washed) feet in traditional style. He was annoyed that he had lost grapes nearer the ground to birds, a common problem on vineyards. He said that if he was starting again it would be on the other side of our allotment site where, in the absence of a clay layer near the surface, the vines would have extended their roots downwards better. Even so it shows that if you pick the right hardy varieties of grape, vines will do well in this area as shown by some commercial vineyards close by. He just has a row of white Phoenix grapes to pick now. Our Saturday morning vegetable stall is going from strength to strength with people even having to queue to be served sometimes. It’s pumpkin, squash time and brussels sprouts time but with the cooler weather the range of vegetables available will get shorter and it’s time for allotment holders to dig over the soil for overwintering. If you fancy starting up a mini-vineyard or just want to grow vegetables now their price is going up contact Mick our plot bailiff on 07725 402 033 or call by on a Saturday morning for a chat.
