From the Editor Happy New Year Readers! Or is it? At the time of writing (due to printer close downs over the holiday season), we aren’t actually at Christmas yet and everything hangs in the balance once more – Omicron! I, like many of you I’m sure, was hopeful that the worst of the pandemic times are behind us but, as it currently stands, we do not know how this variant is or isn’t going to transpire – anyway, shoulder shrug, see what happens and onwards we move! Following from our covers this month I’ve already made my New Year’s resolutions but they are toned down massively on normal - as what I’m really wanting is a nice long break, in the sunshine, preferably with lots of books! I love reading but barely get chance these days, so I’m going to see if I can stick to this one – 1 book per month, no excuses! What’s your plans for 2022? In terms of the mags, I am loving seeing all the articles/contributions, especially the heritage articles. Across all the magazines, they are absolutely fantastic and so interesting for each area – I’m very thankful to all the people that make the effort and send these articles over each month to us, we love printing them and I hope you all love reading them as much as I do? With that in mind, we’re hoping to bring you even more content next year, with some big household names, all being well. We’ll keep our powder dry until everything is fully confirmed but safe to say it’s very exciting if it does happen.

Obviously, creating new content will no doubt bring some more magazine launches – so watch this space on Voice Magazines reaching even more people in 2022! Although, it is a much more difficult juggle this year with paper prices increasing so substantially and showing no signs of slowing down (13% increase so far!! Eeek!!). Final note to mention, thank you to everyone for bearing with us in terms of delivery last month and possibly the coming few months. In between storms, covid & other illnesses and holidays, we do have to extend a little extra time to our fabulous distribution team at this time of year as sometimes it isn’t safe or they simply aren’t well enough to deliver, but we massively appreciate your patience on this. Once more unto the breach…….See you in the Feb edition, Happy Reading,

INTRODUCING
ASHFIELD THERAPY CENTRE Once upon a time...well in 2008, Your Feet First Foot Health Clinic opened in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. It was a small, one Practitioner clinic, which thrived over the next 11 years. We're Lyndsey and Dave and in late 2018, we took over the family business and set to work looking after Kirkby's feet! Like everyone else, we could never have imagined that 18 months later, we'd be navigating our way through the Covid-19 pandemic as a small, healthcare business.
employ a virtual reception service to handle the overwhelming number of calls regarding treatment, screening patients for Covid-19 and to handle the volume of reschedule requests. We spoke to colleagues across health and wellbeing and found that we weren't alone. We were all struggling to navigate the new rules and what they meant for our businesses and the future. This is when the idea of Ashfield Therapy Centre was born.
We wanted to create a space that not only And it was rough! worked for our business, but that would work for It became clear very other health and wellbeing quickly that our space was businesses and no longer big enough. to opening, but in October we moved our busy foot health clinic permanently into the space. While we settle in, we've mostly been alone in the space.
Being practitioners ourselves, we've worked hard to create a calm, functional environment and we're loving working in our space. Our move has enabled us to grow our business and hopefully will help others to do the same.
That will all start to change in the New Year though, when we will hopefully be fully ready for Lyndsey is currently business. studying for a Masters in Podiatry to widen the scope We've already had some of treatment that we can taster sessions with offer in our Clinic. Happy New Year! In the 21st Century, we see January 1st as the start of a brand new year - but did you know that this wasn’t always the case? In fact the month of January didn’t even exist until around 700 BCE when it and February were added to the Roman calendar. At that point in history the start of the new year was widely regarded as being March 1st - to coincide with the start of new life in spring. In about 45 BCE Julius Caesar (yes, the one who invaded Britain, lusted after Cleopatra, and was stabbed to death by the members of his senate) introduced a new calendar to the Roman empire - one based on the movement of the earth around the sun, and much more accurate than the old lunar based system. This calendar became known as the Julian Calendar and it was decreed that January 1st be recognised as the start of a new year throughout Roman territories. It doesn’t end there though… New Year was still a moveable feast right up to the acceptance of (another!) new calendar system in 1582 - the Gregorian calendar, which is still used today. The day was celebrated 25 December; 1 March; 25 March and also on the movable feast of Easter; depending on where you were in Europe. Very confusing! Even more confusing if you were in Britain because, believe it or not, until 1752 Britain (except Scotland) and its Empire had retained March 25 as the official start of the year. Now we’ve established when January 1st became recognised as the start of a new year, let’s take a look to see when ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ became common. Historians tell us that Babylonians were the first to make new year resolutions
around 2000 BCE, although their new year was in springtime when they held a big festival lasting for 12 days. Citizens swore to pay off debts to their gods, and promised to return borrowed goods. It sounds a bit ‘resolutionary’ but not much! The actual phrase ‘New Year Resolution’ was first used in a Boston newspaper in 1813 according to Mirriam Webster (a website, not a person) “And yet, I believe there are multitudes of people, accustomed to receive injunctions of new year resolutions, who will sin all the month of December, with a serious determination of beginning the new year with new resolutions and new behaviour, and with the full belief that they shall thus expiate and wipe away all their former faults.” Now that sounds familiar! It would be even more appropriate to add “And the resolutions will be broken within the month”! Personally I think spring is a much more sensible time to set new intentions - the days are getting longer and everything feels so much more alive with possibility than dark cold January! What do you think? Will you be making (and breaking) any resolutions this year? These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Twelve support groups were initially launched whilst John Eastwood Hospice was in the planning stage to help with fundraising in order to fund for the construction of the building. Today just two of the original support groups remain operational, in Edwinstowe and Warsop. Set up over 35 years ago, Edwinstowe Support Group has gone from strength to strength and this year presented the Hospice with their annual donation of £15,000. Coffee mornings and stalls at events have always been a huge success within the community and more recently, a member of Edwinstowe Support Group has introduced a Facebook selling page in which donated items are sold raising funds for the hospice. This has proven to be very popular and a small team of volunteers are now involved in the day to day management of this initiative. The profile of the support group has meant that it has been able to maintain a similar number of members throughout the years, with leavers being replaced by newcomers. New members explained that they wished to give something back to the hospice because they had shared experience of cancer and other life limiting illnesses. Phil Robinson, Chair of the Support Group said “although the groups were not intended to support bereaved families, it has indeed happened as we have provided a way for people to `give back` to the hospice by joining the group.” We thank the members of Edwinstowe Support Group for their continued dedication and commitment to the work that they do and congratulate them on the success of the group for over 35 years.

Book Review
“The body is in the library” sounds like the start of an Agatha Christie, or a game of Cluedo. And Snow, by Irish writer John Banville has strong echoes of the traditional murder mystery – run down country house, aristocratic family – police inspector looking for clues, and yes a dead body, though one mutilated in a way which Miss Christie might not have risked writing about. But this novel is so much more. John Banville knows Irish society. His earlier novel The Sea also set in rural Ireland won a Booker Man prize and in addition to a lengthy catalogue of novels he’s also written crime stories under the name Benjamin Black. Snow is set in a ferociously cold Irish winter, and the frozen landscape is reflected inside Ballyglass House by a 1950s society frozen in social and religious intolerance. It’s a heady and compelling mix. This story is only partly about the murder. It’s a clever take on the whodunit, well written and with wit. But it tells another story about a time and place which is engrossing. And it’s a good read for a chilly time of year.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
This month’s walk first featured in the magazine nearly eight years ago! We re-walked the route in December and brought it up to date with a few minor tweaks. Rafa wouldn’t have even been five years old at the time of this walk, so it was lovely to take him back over old footsteps and to still see a spring in his step. There is nothing as wonderful as sharing a walk with your furry friend and this is a lovely walk to share.
5 1/2 MILE CIRCULAR WALK FROM MORTON VIA PADLEY WOOD
A moderate walk with a varied terrain. The route should take around 2 1/2 hours. There are some stretches along country roads, so take care. And of course, as usual at this time of the year there are some uneven and muddy parts so a good pair of boots or wellies is highly recommended.
START: HOLY CROSS CHURCH, CHURCH LANE, MORTON, DERBYSHIRE, DE55 6GU 1.
24
Begin at the church on Church Lane in Morton. On street parking is normally available nearby. With the church on your right head along Church Lane, before following the road around to the right to continue along Higham Lane.
2.
Walk along this country road for just under 600 meters, taking care to watch out for traffic as there are no footpaths. The road bends right then left twice, on the second time take a footpath sign for ‘Mickley Lane’ on your right, between a road sign and a gate.

Follow this path into a field a cross the stile and pass through a gate, keep ahead to pass through another gate. Continue ahead past a pylon on your right and at the corner of the field pass through the hedge and carry on ahead to cross three fields via the stiles available. At the end of the third field go through a gate and keep ahead, with the hedge on your right. Cross a stile and then at the corner of the next field pass through a gate before turning right to pass through another gate. Carry on ahead towards a metal gate marked ‘footpath’. Walk straight ahead through the farm yard following the clearly marked ‘footpath’ signs in white paint. Take caution here as there may be a loose, barking dog in the farm yard. Carry on ahead through a field with a caravan park on your left to reach a wooded area. Join the path straight ahead of you and follow this to reach Morton Road. Pass through the gate and cross with care. Carry on ahead following the footpath sign. Keeping to the main path until you reach a stile at a cross roads with a rough farm road. Carry on ahead with the wooded area on your right then turn right at the first opportunity to keep the wooded area on your right and solar panels on your left. Follow this track straight ahead to cross a stile, then keep to the right-hand path to cross the rail bridge and pass into Padley Wood. Keep to the main track and cross a small footbridge. When you meet the fields join the path straight ahead with the hedge on your right and follow it uphill.
the path alongside a field with the hedge on your left. (Take care not to take the path downhill and through a gate.) 8.
At the corner of the field turn right and continue with the hedge on your left. At the next corner pass through the hedge, take a gate on your right and turn left along a farm track. At the bottom of the track you meet Padley Wood Lane. Turn right here.

Carry on along the lane as it bends left and then follow it ahead until you get close to a farm. Take a path on your left straight ahead as the lane bends right towards the farm. Follow the path, keeping the hedge on your right. Part way down the side of the field keep to the right and follow the path into another field and continue ahead.
10. Pass through a gate and continue along the path as it takes you over a rail bridge and then back onto to a hedge lined track. Carry on along this track as it joins Evershilll Lane. Walk along the lane for a fair distance as it brings you back into Morton. Keep to the lane until you meet the B6014 Stretton Road. 11. Cross the road and turn left on the road and follow it back towards the church. Turn right after a red brick house to pass through the Church Yard and bring you back to where you began.
FINISH: HOLY CROSS CHURCH, CHURCH LANE, MORTON, DERBYSHIRE, DE55 6GU
Carry on along this path for a fair distance entering into the edge of a wooded area. After leaving the wood carry on the corner of a field. Here you will meet a crossroad of paths. Take the gate on your right and follow

INTRODUCING BRITISH DIVERS MARINE LIFE RESCUE British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) is a nationwide charity dedicated to the rescue of marine mammals - seals, porpoises, dolphins and whales – around our coastline. The organisation has over 2500 volunteer ‘Marine Mammal Medics’, ready to respond to any of the 2000+ callouts the charity’s hotline receives every year. With emphasis about going to the coast for mental and physical health benefits this can unintentionally bring with it greater conflict between people and wildlife as they compete for space. Climate change also appears to be having a growing impact on our wildlife, with some species like dolphins shifting their distribution around the coast as sea temperatures change. BDMLR Medics also deal with whales, dolphins and porpoises when they are stranded alive on the beach. Like seals, they can sometimes be in poor health, but other times may simply have been caught out by fast moving tides or enclosed areas like estuaries. After expert veterinary assessment, these animals can be refloated back into the sea if deemed suitable.
coastguards as Annie. Annie stranded at Chapel St Leonards in August 2020 and medics from Tibshelf responded to the urgent call out. With heavy rain, thunder and lightening they made it to the coast as night fell. It was found that not only had Annie stranded, but she was pregnant and in labour on the beach. Medics entered the water with Annie and with coastguards holding onto the medics to try and stabilise them in the two metre waves crashing about them, Annie was given medical aid and assessed. Medics and coastguards clung to each other in the terrible weather, shielding Annie from the worst of the battering sea for more than an hour, whilst crews from RNLI Skegness battled their way through the storm. Annie was gently loaded onto the lifeboat and with medics on board she was taken out to sea where the water was much calmer, here she was re-assessed before being lowered gently over the side. Both Annie and her baby survived.
Marine Mammal Medics and rescue equipment are also based near Alfreton. In 2018 it was found that Midlands medics formed the link between East and West coast rehab centres and medics often relay seal pups through Derbyshire. Almost thirty seal pups had travelled through the area this year alone, for vital treatment and rehab before being released. Midlands medics also respond to rescues on the coastlines, this included seven Sperm Whales which stranded Christmas Eve 2020, a four metre Basking Shark and two Porpoises. One of the porpoises was named by the

They say you eat with your eyes first . If that’s the case then this recipe should have your eyes watering... in a good way!
Ingredients:
Method: 1. Mix the yogurt and tikka powder in a large bowl, add the paneer and toss to coat. Cover and marinate in the fridge for 4 hours or overnight if possible. 2. Thread the paneer, peppers and onion wedges onto 4 skewers (if you’re using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 20 minutes first to stop them from scorching). 3. Preheat your grill to high. 4. Put the skewers on a rack over a baking sheet or grill pan and cook for 15-20 minutes or until browned and golden, turning once. 5. Meanwhile, put the extra 100g yogurt in a bowl and sprinkle over the extra curry powder. 6. Serve the skewers with the yogurt, lime wedges, salad or Speed vegetables and your favourite Food Optimising rice.

2022 - Energy and You With the ever increasing cost of energy, it makes sense to look at ways we can improve the energy efficiency of our homes and places of work. HVCA have given us some ideas to share with you all as we head into 2022… Let’s start with the problems: Vast amounts of energy are currently being wasted due to home inefficiencies - poor insulation, outdated boiler heating systems, polluting oil heating systems, inefficient rural open fires or wood burners. There is no one size fits all when it comes to improving the energy efficiency of our homes because each home is different, and certain initiatives that may work in one won’t work in another. Add in the cost of ‘retrofitting’ our homes to match the latest standards, and it’s no wonder that many of us are left scratching our heads when it comes to improving the energy efficiency of our houses. The four biggest things we all need to look at doing are: 1. Ensuring our homes have plenty of insulation (particularly, but not exclusively, roof) 2. Installing air pumps to replace gas and oil central heating 3. Installing well-sealed double glazing 4. Installing renewable energy generation systems - e.g. solar panels But none of these are cheap and as much as we may all want to do our bit to mitigate climate change, we have limited budgets! Yes, taking these actions will lead to reduced energy bills for us, but without financial help most of us can’t suddenly begin to retrofit our properties. And what about those who rent? How many landlords will put their hand in their pockets in order to ensure their rental property is energy efficient.
So, what little things can we all do to minimise our energy consumption? 1. Get a Smart Meter, they don’t cost the consumer a penny, and with one installed you will be able to tell what is ramping up your bills the most and take action! 2. Turn off the lights when you leave a room 3. Install energy saving throughout the house
lightbulbs
4. Turn off appliances at the socket instead of leaving them on standby 5. Hang heavy curtains or blinds to help with draughty windows (but don’t cover your radiators!) and make sure you close them as soon as it gets dark 6. Turn your thermostat down a few degrees (put a jumper on!) 7. Put reflectors behind your radiators - particularly if they are against an outside wall 8. Draught proof your front (and back) doors - maybe even consider a heavy door curtain 9. Take a shower instead of a bath 10. Only run your washing machine and dishwasher when they are full - and use a lower temperature Make 2022 the year you address your energy bills and lessen your impact on global climate change.
HVCA was established in late 2019, and as their name suggests, it is based in and around the Hope Valley in the Peak District; its aims are to address the climate emergency by reducing carbon emissions and increasing biodiversity. The group was granted Charity status at the end of 2020 and is run by a board of trustees. The work they are doing, and the messages they are sharing, are just as relevant to the rest of the Voice Magazine distribution areas, and we’re delighted to have them on board.

OvenGleamers
Top Tips for Loving Your Cooker This New Year! 1. Invest in a non-stick oven liner. They help to catch all of those annoying drips that stick to the bottom of your cooker, which later can become a burnt-on mess. Easy to wash or pop in the dishwasher. 2. Do not use harsh chemicals inside your cooker. Instead, try a safer homemade option using items found around your household. For an all-purpose cleaner and deodorizer, mix together 4 tablespoons baking soda with 1 litre warm water. 3. Get the wiping habit! Wipe away any spillages immediately with a damp cloth. Don’t give the mess a chance to stay. I know this sounds easy and as hard as you try it is a chore, the oven can still be hot and some of the stuff just doesn’t want to come off but stick with it. Get a microfibre cloth and use it wet with washing-up solution. 4. Cover your roast! You need to stop the grease spitting all over your lovely clean oven. To do this just put a lid on your roast tin or cover with foil or try a roasting bag. This way the inside of your oven and your grill (if it’s inside your oven) won’t become completely coated in grease when you are cooking. This grease, if left in the oven, becomes burnt on carbon in the long term and is very difficult to get off. 5. Get a professional in to Gleam It! If you really can’t get all the dirt and grime out of your oven yourself then maybe call and book someone that can. A newly cleaned cooker will be sparkling and clean and if you follow our other tips you will keep it clean, won’t you?

HERITAGE OF KIRKBY & ANNESLEY WILLIAM RILEY ‘KEGGY’ An elderly gentleman kindly allowed me to discuss his history and that of his family in Annesley and Newstead. Being in his 80’s, he had looked into some of his family history. Going through his photos, this was a post card, to a former neighbour from Mrs Riley. This young man, was posing with a Cricket Ball, dressed in Cricket whites, it was a proud scene for his achievement. ‘That was Keggy’ Riley, he was a Nottinghamshire Cricketer, his family were friends and possibly distant family of Mr Lester. Being left handed, William, was called ‘Keggy’ a nickname that stuck. He was born 1888, making him 18 when this card was sent to Wakefield in 1906. John Riley, his father was a miner from Kirkby, his mother Catherine from Bagthorpe, Selston. The 1911 Census has his parents aged 48 years and a sister Bertha May aged 15, William was 22. A brother James 2 years older, had died and was buried at Newstead, a gravestone very readable still stands. Work at Newstead brought families to the developing village, but in 1886 John and Catherine (Kate) wed in Linby as there was no Church at Newstead. Johns father was also John a farmer, from Kirkby, Kate’s father Levi Hankin a collier (Hankin could have been Hawkin or Hawkins), which is the link between the Lesters and the Riley’s. If they had
worked on the Liberty of Newstead, possibly the estate, a wedding at the Chapel in the Abbey may have been permitted. Weddings were mostly at Lynby/ Linby. Another cricketer, Ted Alletson recorded on 20th May 1911, a last-wicket stand with William. He was born at Welbeck 1884, on the estate of the Duke of Portland. In Worksop a pub called the Innings was opened in 1975 to celebrate Alletson, (1884-1963) As with many lads born into mining families, he looked for a better life, becoming a professional cricketer until Feb 1916 at the age of 30 years he joined the Army during WW1.
He died 9th of August
1917.
Falling in Action in France or Belgium as a Gunner of the Royal Cannon Artillery, when a shell splintered. He is buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery Belgium. The Hucknall Dispatch newspaper wrote his obituary on 23rd of August 1917. Nottinghamshire Cricketers on old picture postcards, under Yesterdays Nottinghamshire’ Series no 4, has a card by Hawkins of William. This is at the side of one of W W Whysall 1887 -1930, he also has strong Annesley family connections and is buried at Mansfield.
Being interested in Local and family history, I have a facebook page Annesley OC Heritage Extra. Cover lots in and around, pictures of and comments.

GARDENS
Gardener’s Calendar
If you’re itching to be outside this is a good time for planting bare root roses, and pruning overgrown honeysuckle back hard to promote new growth in spring.
Perennials such as stonecrop, otherwise known as sedum can be trimmed. Old stems may be looking very leggy and bedraggled so take them out, but be careful not to damage new growth coming through. Plants which have been forced for inside growing for Xmas can be put outside to let them die down once they’ve done their job. You can plant hyacinths in the garden and they should grow next year outside, but narcissus such as paper whites need to be lifted and stored as bulbs to be planted for indoor growing again next year. Most indoor plants need less water over the winter when they enjoy a dormant period. But they still need good light and plants such as fuchsias and begonias which you may be overwintering indoors to protect from frost need a minimum of 5 degrees heat to keep them going. If they’re on a window sill, don’t leave them behind the curtain overnight as the temperature can drop dramatically even in a centrally heated house.
Top Tip:
Clean your pots ready for spring planting. Yes it’s boring, but then you’re good to go come seed sowing time. Some recommend diluted bleach to kill off pathogens, but a less drastic solution is a cupful of white vinegar in a washing up bowl of warm soapy water.
