From the Editor Dearest Readers (I feel like Lady Whistledown!!), What a strange month it has been and, as predicted, busy! As you all know, I stay out of all things political in here both nationally and locally – point of principle - but just sometimes, I have to shake my head publicly and then go back to try and deal with, like most of you I’m sure, the worsening cost of living crisis, rising costs of food, heating etc, nevermind the costs of trying to run a business! Our 5th paper price increase of the year has landed this month – it’ll be a strange month when we don’t get one! And what is being done to help the – you know – constituents?? Still, onwards we trundle in our daily lives and let’s hope that the powers that be in whatever capacity, notice the cliff edge before we drive over it at full pelt! Anyway, speaking of being ‘shaken down’ on the way in and the way out – we went to Centre Parcs for the previously mentioned Cousins ‘Sten do’ (stag and hen do – Sten is the nicer version!) and jeez, I felt like a fatted calf being shuffled from one financial pilfering zone to another!! Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that it works brilliantly from some people. However, I’m not sure it’s for me anymore. For example, nobody can come as a day visitor anymore (so all the people who were part of the wedding brigade could not obtain a day pass – it’s a thing of the past since covid apparently!) and if you left the site (which you could do freely btw), crikey me, if you came back in, well, I haven’t felt like that since a check point in Egypt (only missing the sub machine gun!), your answers had to be swift, accurate, personal and without hesitation! I mean, it wouldn’t be so bad if I hadn’t seen that particular ‘gatekeeper’ 4 times that day alone.

VOICE
Also – and this one has really stuck in my gullet – I sold a kidney to obtain a 3hr spa session in the evening which began at 6pm. Obviously, when you can’t get in your villa until 4pm, you have a mad dash to get your car, follow the snaking line of cars to get somewhere near your villa, unload and drive your car back to the car park, then collect your bike and head over to the Spa. I can’t think why but I had Benny Hill music in my head during that particular event #stressful…..you need a spa after that ordeal! Anyhow, you get chucked out at 9pm, get out your wet gear, walk into the centre cos you’re hungry, only to find that everywhere stops seating people at 9pm, you can’t get a takeaway from the 17 items (yes I counted) takeaway list because you should have booked a slot in the afternoon, the supermarket is not open to sort yourself out AND you obvs can’t get a Deliveroo or just eat or anything external because ‘you shall not pass!’ I haven’t been told what time to go to bed since I was a kid and even that was negotiable – ask my parents! Anyway, because of various other disasters before we left home - egg and cheese omelette with a slice a bread it was #rocknroll. Ultimately, a fun time was had by all ….. until 4 days before the wedding and I’m on crutches!!!! See you all next time,
x Emily

Our Oceans are in Danger When you look at a satellite image of our planet, you may wonder - as I do - why we have named it Earth, given that the vast majority of the surface is covered by water. Any extra-terrestrial flying past could be forgiven for thinking that the beautiful green and blue globe below them was a water world. Planet Earth is 71% covered by oceans, and it was in these very oceans that, until recently, scientists believe life itself developed. However, newer research suggests that the first single cell organisms developed in “muddy pools” on land and not in the depth of the primordial oceans. The scientific debate is still open, and no doubt will switch back and forth between muddy puddles and the ocean depths as the origin of life, but one thing does seem clear - water was necessary for life on this planet to begin. Sadly, given the very clear indications that water, and thus the oceans that cover the planet, are vital to life’s existence, we humans have done a pretty poor job of looking after our rivers and seas. We’ve overfished, hunted and killed our close cousins, the whales, to dangerous levels, and allowed pollution to enter the oceans, seas and waterways of the world. A quick internet search revealed that there are thought to be 5.25 TRILLION pieces of plastic rubbish currently polluting our oceans. 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibres per km2 litter the deep sea. I hadn’t even heard of plastic microfibres, so had to look that up too…they are described as very small thread-like fibres that can come from both natural and synthetic fabrics. By 2050, ocean plastic will outweigh all of the ocean’s fish! These plastics can have a massive impact on life in the seas; fish and other sea life can ingest them, causing digestion problems which pass up the food chain and
ultimately to us - and that’s before factoring in chemical and heavy metal pollution. The floating debris blocks out the sunlight, which prevents light from reaching corals and plant life, thus inhibiting their growth. Statistics show that as much as 27 per cent of monitored reef formations have been lost, and as much as 32 per cent are at risk of being lost within the next 32 years. Sitting in our inland homes, it is very difficult to see how we can do anything to improve this dire situation - it feels like anything we do try will be a mere “drop in the ocean”, but it shouldn’t stop us from trying to do our part should it? There are some steps we can all take… • Reduce your use of single-use plastics • Support legislation to curb plastic production and waste • Recycle properly • Avoid products containing microbeads (found in some household and beauty products) We only have one planet, we need to look after all of it - including the oceans, seas and rivers.

Thousands raised by police officers and staff for 'amazing' hospice A hospice that cares for terminally-ill people has received a boost thanks to funds raised by Nottinghamshire Police. Every year the officers and staff from Nottinghamshire Police vote for a local charity which we call ‘The Chief’s Charity’ for the force to support. Staff and officers do all they can to raise funds from a variety of different events such as cake sales, bike rides, running challenges, dress down days, auctions and filming access donations. This year staff selected the John Eastwood Hospice, which cares for the terminally ill. A cheque for £6269.18 was presented to the hospice by Mr Guildford on 13th April. Tracey Joyce, trust manager at John Eastwood Hospice, said the money will contribute towards the £650,000-a-year running costs of the hospice and that everyone connected to the hospice was extremely grateful for the donation. She said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive such a generous donation and to know that the hospice is supported by local organisations as well as members of the public. Our hospice is fully funded by the generosity of donors and without this support we could not continue to provide this vital support to terminally ill patients and their families. Chief Constable Craig Guildford praised the fundraising efforts of the force’s police officers, staff and volunteers. He said: “Supporting local charities is something I am passionate about and that is why I am delighted to be able to make this presentation on behalf of the force. I know that money will be put to good use to allow the hospice to continue its incredible work in making every day the best it can be for its residents. “I’m proud of our staff and officers for the generosity and support they have shown to this cause over the past year.”

Rabbit Care Top Tips Emily Tindall RVN FDSc
Housing:
Bonding:
Rabbits require large amounts of space with grazing areas, access to outdoors and dry, well ventilated indoor areas meaning the usual hutches you can get from stores are usually not appropriate. Playhouses, sheds or even aviaries can be converted to be much more suitable accommodation for your bunnies. Rabbits need to be exposed to natural light to prevent vitamin D deficiency, so supplements or time outdoors needs to be factored into their daily lives, especially for house rabbits. Suitable housing is also necessary to prevent health problems such as upper or lower respiratory disease. Therefore avoiding small, dusty and dirty environments is vital while ensuring there is suitable weatherproofing to avoid damp.
Rabbits are highly social animals and due to being prey creatures, without a buddy to watch their back, a rabbit may never fully relax. However, bonding is a complicated procedure which can change for each pairing – therefore patience is key. A fast bonding can take as little as 2 weeks whereas more complicated ones can take as long as 3-4 months or, on rare occasions, 6 months to a year.
Feeding: The diet of a domestic rabbit should mainly consist of three things: • Hay/grass (timothy hay being the preferred type) • Rabbit pellets • Mixed leafy green vegetables/herbs Hay and grass should make up the majority of the rabbits diet (a minimum of a ball of hay the same size as the rabbit or larger a day) but a handful of leafy greens/herbs and a tablespoon per kg of ideal bodyweight of pellets will lead to a well balanced diet. Treats, vegetables and herbs can be given but must be given in moderation and new food items should be introduced separately – one new item per week to allow time for any intolerances to show. Long term changes to the rabbit’s diet should made slowly over the time of 4-6 weeks to allow their sensitive digestive system to adapt appropriately and reduce chances of an upset stomach.
It is important to note that both rabbits should be neutered before introducing to them to reduce hormonal influence. Bonding should be started a month after neutering to allow for enough hormones to leave the other rabbit interested enough without going overboard. A second cage will be needed near the original cage alongside neutral spaces for both rabbits to interact. Introductions should be gradual and closely observed at all times.
Vaccinations and Health Checks: Your rabbits should be fully vaccinated every year. There are two vaccinations available; a combination vaccination covering Myxo (myxomatosis) and RHD1 (rabbit haemorrhagic disease) and a single dose for RHD2 (a separate strain) – both are important and should be given 2 weeks apart from one another. The combination vaccination can be given from as young as 5 weeks old whereas the single dose vaccine has to be given from 10 weeks. These vaccines need to be repeated yearly to ensure full coverage. Frequent health checks with the vet will help to assess your rabbit’s general growth and care. It is important to monitor how much your rabbit eats, drinks and poos to make sure you can spot any potential problems early on. It is also a good idea to get your rabbit used to being handled and having their paws touched which will make health checks and nail clips generally easier and reduce stress levels during vet visits.
Flystrike Flystrike coverage is also important during the warmer months and can be easily applied throughout the year. Speak to your vet for when best to apply flystrike protection.

Bakewell Town Football Club Bakewell Town FCs Adult section completed a very productive season on Friday night with a draw against league runners up Cromford and Wirksworth Town FC, having just been crowned Central Midlands Division One (Central) Champions, in addition to the League Cup win against Derby Singh Brothers the week prior. The travelling fans went in hordes to that final, held at Blidworth and were backed up by an amazing 155 people in attendance at Bakewells Rutland Recreation ground just days later, yet again showing the continued growth and undoubted potential of the club. As the players entered the pitch, through a guard of honour conducted by the Junior ranks, the chant of Championees from the fledglings was an added extra for Towns squad of double winners, who were presented with their full trophy haul after the match. The Adult men’s promotion campaign has been built on a solid foundation that has seen long standing experienced players placed with a plethora of graduates from the Junior sides, a pathway that has also seen a remarkable expansion, aligned to a ‘one club’ ethos. The individual team numbers have swelled to an alltime high of 23; now catering for age groups from Junior kickers right through to Veterans, with the club extremely proud of its U18s League Cup winners and the most recent development into the girls and ladies game.
The club now embarks on a busy summer ahead, following the league committees ground grading, as we look to work with the facility provider and local councillors to ensure that minor works are completed in order to ratify the club’s promotion to the Feeder Leagues (old Step 7) and the first official rung on the football pyramid, namely the Central Midlands Premier Division. What are the current wants, needs and ambitions of our club…? We want to be competitive, certainly at adult level, but more importantly we want to continue to mature players in a fun, friendly and organised environment from our Junior section, through to our competitive development team structure and then into our Adult first teams. We continue to welcome our communities support and encourage any individuals that believe they have something to offer and want to get involved (at any level) to simply get in touch from administrators, team coaching to match-day help. We need better, modern facilities and more pitch space that would unlock significant funding streams; a site with potential to develop a marquee pitch and clubhouse that could double up as a community space, a grander, exciting project that might interest anyone who wants to help create a legacy as observed across many other communities. Most of all we want to continue to grow the club and promote the sporting activity that we love, we’ve seen it’s a product that people want to buy into and one that we believe contributes so much to our local community.

Apotropaic Marks and Witches in Bakewell had run up in town the scoundrel ran off owing the good lady rent. In his hurry he left his clothes behind. Thinking to recoup her loss Mrs Stafford kept them, a grave mistake for which both she and her sister paid dearly. The villain made his way to London where he continued his wicked cheating, stealing ways. He was discovered in a cellar surrounded by stolen goods. When hauled before a magistrate this was the tale he told. During the 16th and 17th centuries religious enthusiasm was at its height, as was a fear of witchcraft. Throughout the country God and the devil held great power over people’s lives. During this time around 3,000 people, mainly women, were arrested and tried for the crime of witchcraft with over 400 of them executed. Apotropaic marks were used to protect buildings and their inhabitants against witchcraft. An apotropaic mark, also known as a witch mark, is a symbol or pattern scratched into the fabric of a building that is intended to keep witches out and hold evil at bay. These marks were carved on doorways, window frames, fireplaces, even on oak beams under the floor, all places’ witches were thought to enter. Various designs were used, flower like patterns of overlapping circles, crisscrossing lines to confuse spirits and sometimes V and M, or double V for the Virgin Mary. Such marks have been found in Shakespeare’s birthplace, many churches, and the Tower of London. Bakewell Old House Museum has some too. They can be found carved into the doorway of the Tudor Parlour. They consist of a heart shape and a V alongside an inverted M. No one was safe from witchcraft, not even the inhabitants of Bakewell, tucked away in the country. Mrs Stafford was a widowed milliner who, assisted by her sister, rented out rooms in her house on King Street, Bakewell. A Scotsman came to town looking for lodging and Mrs Stafford took him in. Later when challenged about unpaid debts he
‘I was woken by noises, singing and such. Out of curiosity, as would anyone, I peeped through cracks in the floorboards and saw the sisters chanting and preparing for a journey.’ Over thick, over thin Now Devil to the cellar in Lunnun. ‘They sang. And then they were gone, vanished into thin air before my very eyes. Foolishly I repeated the words I’d heard.’ ‘Over thick, over thin Now Devil to the cellar in Lunnun.’ ‘Then it was that a rush of wind blew me to a cellar, the very same one as them. There was Mrs Stafford and her sister packing these stolen goods. The Mrs handed me some wine and I fell asleep. When I woke they’d gone. That’s when I was arrested. It’s me who’s innocent my only crime that I, for a while, lodged with them.’ The magistrate, deciding this was clearly a case of witchcraft, ordered that the poor women be arrested. The sisters were imprisoned, tried, convicted, and hanged as witches in Derby Gaol in 1608. It is rumoured their spirits still linger in Bakewell.

All Around the Shire Recollections of a Simpler Time
During our reminiscence sessions, these are always the items which are guaranteed to produce a grimace and a chorus of “Oooh, I remember using Izal” followed by floods of memories of freezing cold outside privies, newspaper on string and the dreaded slippery toilet paper. In theory, there was a rough side and a smooth side but, either way, it didn’t do the job. Outside toilets could be either shared with other families or one per household. It was my dad’s job, as a small boy, to cut up newspaper into rectangles and hang on a big nail on the door of the outside loo.
Post-war sanitation meant that new houses began to have indoor plumbing fitted as standard and the problem with trying to flush newspaper was that there were continual blockages. Thank goodness for the arrival of soft toilet paper which appeared in our shops in 1942. However, the high cost meant that many homes could not afford the luxury until the 1960s or 70s. Our reliance on soft toilet paper today is evidenced by panic buying at the beginning of lockdown during the recent pandemic.
My husband has a story which originated from his relatives in This is one occasion I don’t yearn for days gone by when we had to manage with shiny the North East but is replicated in families up and down the medicated toilet paper or when newsprint was country. It goes like this: the latch didn’t work very well on the imprinted on bottoms. outside toilet, so you had to sing hymns to let people know the toilet was occupied. If it was a quick job, it was “Onward Christian Soldiers”, if it was a bit longer, it was “Fight the Good Fight” and if it was a long job, it was” Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow”. Janet and Paul Barrass are

In rural areas, I have heard many stories of people growing up with even more basic toilets: the wooden seat (with and without splinters) and a long drop to a fragrant heap of fertiliser. Some had communal seats side by side.

He did it with the unforgettable Never Let Me Go and he’s got it bang to rights again with his latest novel the Klara and the Sun. Klara is an Artificial Friend – an AI created to be a companion for lonely children. Which means she has to learn first-hand what motivates humans, how they behave towards each other and what their faults and joys are. The Sun powers Klara, but is also a God-like figure with the power to change lives. This probably sounds like a sci-fi approach – and in a way it is. But it asks questions about how our species is going to deal with the new inventions and systems we are creating. But that’s only part of the story. Ishiguro has previously won the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Booker and this book returns again to his ongoing exploration of what it means to exist as people with emotions thoughts and memories. Given all that - which sounds very serious - it’s quite entrancing, very engaging and a really easy read. And it stays with you long after you have finished reading it. For this reader always one of the marks of a good book.

Stop Food Waste! Have you any idea how much food you waste on a daily/weekly/ monthly/annual basis? It may be more than you think! Here’s a mind blowing statistic for you 9.5 million tonnes of food waste in a single year in the UK – even though 8.4 million people in the UK are in food poverty. This equates to an average UK family throwing away EIGHT meals EVERY week. This level of food wastage not only costs us in monetary terms as individuals, it actually impacts the environment too, with food waste in UK households producing nearly 25 million tonnes of CO2 every year. Our grandparents and greatgrandparents would be horrified at what we chuck away every single day - as would people living in parts of the world where hunger is an ever present fact of life. A lot of our wastage could be prevented if only we would use a little common sense, understand how best to store food, know what use by/best before dates really mean, and get clever with our cooking. In simple terms, “use by” means just that, whereas “best before” is only a guideline. Don’t just rely on the labels though - do your own checks before throwing something away, does the item look OK, smell OK? If so, taste a little - it could still be perfectly fine to use. If you have a freezer it should become your best friend - so many things can be safely frozen, including stuff you wouldn’t normally think about like milk, cream and cheese. Just make sure you defrost things fully and safely before
using, guidance can always be found online. Microwaves can be great tools for speeding up this process - follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Learning some “leftovers” recipes is a great way to use up food that you may previously have considered binning. Those limp leeks, crinkly carrots, and a chicken carcass can be quickly turned into a stock or the basis of a soup. Similarly, the green veg in the back of the fridge can also be turned into a soup, chuck in that bit of cheese that needs using up and turn the bread that you think is past its best into croutons (tear up, put on a baking tray, sprinkle with olive oil and bake until crunchy). Use ALL the fruit and veg you buy chop and use the stems of herbs as well as the leaves; add the green bits and the stalks of a cauli when making cauliflower cheese; slice broccoli stems and add to stir-fries (or chuck in the soup pot!); use most of the green bits of leeks and spring onions. You can even leave the skins on potatoes as you boil for mash - but make sure they’re clean! We can all help prevent food wastage - it just takes a little effort, knowledge and imagination. WHO WERE THE SUFFRAGETTES? Emmeline Pankhurst
Colours of the suffragette movement. Purple represents loyalty and dignity, white for purity, and green for hope.
Suffragettes were an activist women’s organisation in the early 20th century who, under the banner “Votes for Women”, fought for women’s right to vote in public elections in the United Kingdom. The term refers in particular to members of the British Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), a women-only movement founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst, which engaged in direct action and civil disobedience. In 1906, a reporter writing in the Daily Mail coined the term suffragette for the WSPU, derived from suffragist (any person advocating for voting rights), in order to belittle the women advocating women’s suffrage. The militants embraced the new name, even adopting it for use as the title of the newspaper published by the WSPU. Women had won the right to vote in several countries by the end of the 19th century; in 1893, New Zealand became the first self-governing country to grant the vote to all women over the age of 21. When by 1903 women in Britain had not been enfranchised, Pankhurst decided that women had to “do the work ourselves”; the WSPU motto became “deeds, not words.” The suffragettes heckled politicians, tried to storm parliament, were attacked and sexually assaulted during battles with the police, chained themselves to railings, smashed windows, carried out a nationwide bombing and arson campaign, and faced anger and ridicule in the media. When imprisoned they went on hunger strike, to which the government responded by force-feeding them. The first suffragette to be force fed was Evaline Hilda Burkitt. The death of one suffragette, Emily Davison, when she ran in front of the King’s horse at the 1913 Epsom Derby, made headlines around the world. The WSPU campaign had varying levels of support from within the suffragette movement; breakaway groups formed, and within the WSPU itself not all members supported the direct action. Hard to imagine they were seen as a ‘terrorist movement’!
They were active in our part of the Midlands – The Workers Dreadnought paper issued on Saturday November 2nd, 1918, records that Sylvia Pankhurst was brought before the Petty Sessional Division in Eckington. It records she caused ‘a mutiny, sedition or disaffection amongst his Majesty’s Forces or amongst the civilian population ‘. The charge arose from a speech given by Pankhurst on 28th September to Cresswell Local Labour Party. She was taken to Renishaw Police Station cells and arrested. She was fined £50 and £8 12s in costs. The suffragette campaign was suspended when World War I broke out in 1914. After the war, the Representation of the People Act 1918 gave the vote to women over the age of 30 who met certain property qualifications. Ten years later, women gained electoral equality with men when the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act 1928 gave all women the right to vote at age 21.

Gardener’s Calendar
It’s as safe as it can be, to put bedding plants out now, so go for it! Though have some fleece ready, just in case of a flash frost.
With hardly annuals such as love in a mist and cornflower, less is more – they prefer not to be crowded so give them about 12 inches of space between. It results in stronger roots and leaves –so more flowers. If your forget-me-nots develop powdery mildew (overcrowding) pull them out, or the mildew may spread to other nearby plants. Net your strawberries if you have a vigorous pigeon population. Like us, they love them. Houseplants appreciate repotting about now. Slightly bigger pot, brush off loose soil and install new compost. And usually, they will appreciate a holiday outside in the sunshine, so use them as part of your summer display.
Top Tip:
Take out the side shoots on tomatoes – that bit between stem and leaf. They take strength from the plant and won’t produce fruit.
Deadhead, of course, to trick the plant into producing more flowers to give it a chance to set seed and reproduce. But, needless to say, though I will anyway, if you want plants to self-seed – aquilegia or foxgloves come to mind – leave the flowers on so the seed pods will develop.

The Peak District and Derbyshire are famed for their wildflower meadows – although traditional hay meadows took a bad knock during the 1970s and 1980s with around 95% destroyed by intensive farming. Nevertheless, in recent decades there has been a gradual but perhaps accelerating recovery in many areas. There are newly created sites on restoration areas but also farming grassland, which in the era of reduced fertilisers is beginning to recover. The first signs are generally the emergence of fields of tall, golden meadow buttercups and followed by swathes of oxeye daisies. Orchids may follow along with other less common flowers. A great place to see this is on the National Trust estate at Longshaw and close by the Grouse Inn at Froggatt. Over the last few years these have developed into glorious flower meadows and full of birds, bees, and butterflies too. We even had curlews breeding there a few years back and in the evenings a barn owl’s ghostly appearance is not unusual. The types and variety of wildflowers in a meadow depends on various key factors, but mainly soil conditions and then the timing and intensity of management. Ideally a traditional meadow is cut in early spring and then left to grow and flower through the summer. It is then cut as ‘the sward’ in mid to late summer and then grazed to remove the ‘aftermath’. This is the way such areas were managed across Britain and much of Europe for centuries. These are ‘eco-cultural’ features mixing nature and people’s management in an intimate process though the annual pattern of the seasons. The result of management and of low input of nutrients (i.e. no application of artificial fertilisers) perhaps
restricted to the spreading of ‘muck’ each year. During the summertime the flowers have chance to grow to maturity, bloom, and set seed, and are then harvested as hay. For livestock be it cattle or horses, such hay is tastier, richer, and more nutritious that say ryegrass hay which is bulky but problematic because its quality is low. Interestingly too, the meadow plants are powered by networks of underground fungi called ‘mycorrhizas’ which form an invisible network interconnecting plants roots and enabling nutrients and water to be shared throughout the community. Soil conditions include the amount of organic matter from decomposing plant material, associated nutrient, but also water. Wet meadows have a particularly distinctive and rich flora with wonderful fragrant flowers such as meadowsweet, common fleabane, purple loosestrife, marsh marigold, and in spring, lady’s smock. Scarlet pimpernel appears and then disappears where there is a little disturbance – maybe a tractor rut or a molehill. On drier sites and where there is less grazing then meadow cranesbill thrives; a marker increasingly of meadow communities along roadside verges. Butterflies thrive in the meadows with common blue favouring areas with bird’s-foot trefoil and other members of the pea family. However, the annual hay-cut can be an ecological shock-wave and so insects like butterflies also need the uncut edges and corners, and rough areas alongside hedgerows. Enjoy the marvellous meadows from late spring to the end of summer.
