Dear Readers, I’m not the biggest fan of August, truth be told, so I’m quite glad to see the back of it in one way. Expensive holidays, lots of the team on hols, can never get a strong netball squad together! And it signifies the beginning of the end of summer. Throw in a few personal sadness issues this month and it’s taken over from Jan as the rubbish month this year! However, such is life, nothing is all bad and I went camping for the first time in probably 20 years. I mean, I say camping, I had a glamping wigwam bell tent thingy with an electric power point and a memory foam mattress but it still counts! Tell you what though, I could cope with most of it but the toilets…..I mean……do they do that stuff to their toilets at home or just turn into an animal when they are camping/going to festivals? I don’t want to cast aspersions here, each to their own but what is the maximum number of people you need in a group to turn feral, lol??! Anyway, a good time was had by all, have a read about it on pg 28-29. I also had a fandabbydosy time at the Commonwealth games for 1 full day of Netball games. Absolutely exhausting (and no, I wasn’t even playing!!) but I didn’t get to the 2012 Olympics so I’ve resolved, ever since then, to make sure I attend these sporting events. It’s great for the cities involved and I only wished that I’d managed to get tickets for some other sports as well – lt was so well organised and managed. So, I don’t want to be the first to say it, but as we’re promoting and giving away tickets to Matlock Illuminations this month – we are clearly on the downhill run to the man in the red suit month. I’m not sure what this year’s festivities will bring, bearing in mind the misery and the pinch we’re all experiencing amid this cost-of-living crisis, which is imminent but hopefully this month we’ll have an active Government in place. Whatever your ‘team’ you can’t be happy with it at the minute – so we all live in hope that they exact the power to work in our best interests, which we choose to bestow upon them….if not, is it revolution time yet?! Asking for a friend? Thank you so much for the lovely feedback on last month’s front covers and articles. It’s always lovely to get such wonderful feedback – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – it’s really easy to phone up irate and complain about something, but as a society we don’t bother to do nice things very often, seemingly. However, a few readers have taken the time to write to us and also call us this month and it’s been really lovely – so thank you, you are appreciated. It’s nice to be nice! This month we have the Macmillan Coffee Morning on our front covers with another funky new design style and Laura has written another cracking article. I had no idea about the history and what a wonderful legacy he set up –truly visionary & incredibly altruistic. He was clearly ahead of his time. Happy reading,

Next Generation Home improvements, based on Butterley Hill in Ripley, are now in their 13th year since starting trading in 2010. The company specialises in installing high quality resin-bound driveways and patios, as well as maintenance free composite fencing and aluminium gates to the local people of Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire. Like many construction companies, Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns were an enormous challenge for Next Generation Home Improvements in terms of supply chain and the necessary working restrictions. But the company has gone from strength to strength since then with many customers trusting us to undertake work on their property and being delighted with the finished results. Sales Director, Lee Goddard says “We are a local company that employs all our staff from the local area. We pride ourselves on working to high standards & offering unrivalled customer service. We understand the importance of treating every potential customer properly, from initially quoting for a job, through correctly surveying the work, making sure the customer is delighted with the finished work and also our after-care service. The majority of our work comes through recommendations, so if we deliver a high standard of work we often benefit from extra work from envious friends or neighbours” Lee pinpoints the company’s key to success down to the unrivalled dedication & skill of their fitting teams and also the high quality of products that the company use which means the installations don’t just look good, they require no maintenance & stay looking good in the long term. The company would be delighted to quote on any customers work involving resin driveways, patios, composite fencing or gates. Simply drop them a call on 01773 303181

Coffee and Cake against Cancer Macmillan Coffee Morning 2022
Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing.
Somewhat fittingly, Douglas used £10 that his father had given him to set up the society. That £10, equivalent to roughly £1200 today, was the start of the Macmillan story. In the early days, they hand delivered food and coal to people in need, as well as arranging holidays and trips for people with cancer (and their families).
It seems like the Macmillan Coffee Morning has been around forever, doesn’t it? But would it surprise you to know that the first one was held in 1990, and on a very small scale? It did me.
To find out more visit www.landgassociates.co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351 341
These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author.
In 1911 a young man by the name of Douglas Macmillan watched his father die of cancer; the pain and suffering he saw inspired him to found the “Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer”.
The first home visits, offering practical support to those in need, began in the 1930s, and by the 1970s, Macmillan nurses were established, enabling people to stay in their own homes whilst undergoing Douglastreatment.
Finally, when we think of Macmillan, most of us will picture the nurses. These specialists have experience and qualifications in cancer care and are able to help individuals through diagnosis, treatment, aftercare and with ongoing support. Within this group of extraordinary individuals are palliative care nurses who help manage the symptoms of advanced cancer. They are experts in managing symptoms such as pain, sickness or breathlessness and can also help and support family members.
After 111 years, the charity’s ethos has never deviated from Douglas Macmillan’s original statement – “we stand for Betterness”, and has sought to overturn the stigma and dread surrounding a diagnosis of cancer. With an estimated 50% of us expected to experience cancer at some point in our lives, perhaps that destigmatisation has been Douglas Macmillan’s most important legacy.
Macmillan had envisioned “homes for cancer patients”, and although he sadly died of cancer himself in 1969, Macmillan played a key role in the creation of the hospice care system in the 70s and 80s.
Time for a quick history lesson…
This year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning is scheduled for Friday, 30th September – will you be taking part?
Since that inauspicious start, the annual coffee morning has raised a staggering £290million for Macmillan - £11million last year alone, but what does that money fund? How will the price of your coffee and cake on 30th September help people in the UK?

Cook for 2½-3 hours until the pork is really tender and falling apart. 2. Remove the lid and return the dish to the hob. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-6 minutes until the sauce is thick. Remove from the heat, discard the oregano sprigs, then shred the pork in the dish using 2 forks. Season to taste and set aside. 3. Bring a large pan of water to the boil, cook the pasta for 2-3 minutes, drain and return to the pan. To a certain extent I think, yes, people did just battle on through depression and other mental health issues - but they did so because of the stigma of admitting to a) not being able to cope - men especially b) the fear that they would be carted off “by the men in white coats”
Look back to the World Wars of the first half of the 20th century; soldiers were routinely returned to the front line in WW1 despite (to modern eyes) clearly suffering from PTSD, or shellshockfailure to comply would equal desertion, for which the penalty was death.
But did “we just get on with it” in the past?
If the events of the past couple of years have highlighted anything, it is that our mental (good) health is as important as our physical wellbeing. Isolation, fear, and loneliness have contributed to an avalanche of mental health issues for both young and old alike. As I’m sitting here typing this article, I can already hear the internal mumblings of some of our readers… ”we never bothered about mental health in our day, we just got on with it”; “youth of today”; “snowflakes”; “pull your socks up”…etc., etc. I can hear them because these are the kind of things my dad would have said!
Let’s all make a promise to help each other to become more open when it comes to talking about our mental health.
Mental health was equated with weakness, with being locked up in the lunatic asylum, with being a failure. No one talked about their feelings and if they did make it so far as actually speaking to a GP, they would be either dismissed as a malingerer or prescribed tranquilizers and other mood altering medications.
beloved “stiff upper lip” and “carry on regardless” British mantras, in reflection, were actually the very worst approach for everyone’s mental health!
Hundreds of thousands of young men, from both wars, were expected to return and slip straight back into civilian life. Many of them struggled, families suffered as a father who was unable to deal with the horrors of war, but couldn’t talk about his experiences, became remote, closed off - or worse, violent. The
Simply coping is not healthy long term, learning to talk about our issues openly and honestly - whilst not being typically British - is the very best thing we can do, both for our own health and those of the people we love. If you spot someone behaving out of character, seeming down, or struggling with life, ASK THEM IF THEY ARE OK…and don’t take “yes I’m fine” as a response to mean that they are indeed “fine”. The younger generations are better at discussing feelings and needs, having grown up with social media (more about that and mental health in another edition) and are more likely to ask for help…but even they struggle to admit to mental health issues, suicide is the biggest cause of death for young men.

“The League of Ovaltineys”, was broadcast to Great Britain by Radio Luxembourg on Sunday evenings at 5:30 PM. Beginning in February 1935, it was transmitted until September 1939, when the outbreak of World War II forced closure of the station, and restarted again after the war from 1952. Listeners could obtain badges, pins, and secret codes. The Ovaltineys advertising jingle, which featured The Beverley Sisters, was regarded as one of the most successful jingles of the era.
Thankfully, Ovaltine is still widely available and will continue to provide a comforting bedtime drink to generations yet to come. Night Night.
Ovaltine
“We are the Ovaltineys, little girls and boys”. Sing a few words of this jingle and you will soon be joined by a chorus of people of a certain age transported back to when they were a small child. Ovaltine was first produced in Switzerland in 1904. Known originally as Ovomaltine, its main ingredients were eggs and malt to be made into a bedtime drink with warm milk. Its inventor, Dr George Wander, believed it to be a nutritious drink which would go some way to alleviate high child mortality. It was very popular in the UK and manufactured in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire. Near the factory was a health farm run by the Ovaltine works, it was set up as a model farm and a health resort for disadvantaged children and operated until the 1960s. The factory closed in Ovaltine2002. tablets were included in soldiers’ ration packs and recommended for pilots during World War II. The RAF was a large consumer of Ovaltine Tablets.

The Summer can often be seen as a quiet time for hockey but this summer has seen the fruits of years of hard work as young players from MAJHC have been representing the club at the regional level. Young players shine on the regional stage

In February 2020 he was invited to trial for the U15’s East Midlands Performance Centre Squad. Unfortunately, 15 minutes into the trial Covid struck and England Hockey put a freeze on all hockey. He was re-invited in September 2020, successfully completed the trials and became an U17 East Midlands PC squad member. 2 years later he’s flourished and to his delight represented the U17 East Midlands squad at the Performance Centre Challenge Cup 2022.

6 players were put forward from MAJHC to the UK Lions East Midlands hockey trials. For the boys there was Jack Tait (GK) and Harrison Shooter. For the girls we had Ava Walker (GK), Emily Chesterton, Megan Laws and Emily Lee. All of the players have been a part of our MAJHC system from the early days of its creation, learning from their coaches at training and gaining valuable experience through playing intournaments in Nottinghamshire and TheDerbyshire.trialswere held over 6 weeks of training at the Nottingham Hockey Centre. Here their hockey skills were improved and assessed by coaches who selected their squad for the final Alltournament.ofour players were successful in making the final squad and participated in the 3-day tournament held in July 2022. The tournament was an opportunity for some of our players to experience their first full-sized game and play against skilled and experienced opposition. Our players had an amazing experience at the hands of excellent team managers/coaches, which has left them with a thirst for learning more about their sport and a drive to better themselves as they grow into adult hockey. A few of our players, Jack, Ava and Emily Lee were on the young side to be participating in this event but actually thrived and demonstrated that although they were 2 years younger than most other players, they could match their skill and drive to succeed. These 3 will be of age to enter the county set up come September and I don’t think there will be anything stopping them as they shine.
Player in profile: Ben Lee Ben is a shining example both for MAJHC and how skill, determination and hardwork can reap its rewards!
Ben started playing hockey when he was about 10 years old, he picked up a stick like it was part of him and loved it immediately. He started with Mansfield Junior Hockey Club (now MAJHC) on the very first day of its creation and hasn’t looked Hockeyback.very quickly became central to his sporting life, aged 13 he began playing for Mansfield Hockey Club and joined Notts County Hockey in the Academy Centre Squad. The new experience and players just spurred him on to wanting more hockey, to strive to be better and learn more. In March 2019 (aged 14) he was asked to play for the first team at Mansfield, he claimed his spot and literally nobody has been able to catch him down that right wing!

It has been 3 Years in the waiting, but Voice Magazines hit the festival scene at long last!
This invite was put on hold whilst the world mourned their social lives but then we got the call, YNot 2022 was ON, the cheers were heard throughout the Midlands from our office! As the line up grew so did our excitement. Bell tents were purchased by the Directors (Emily, not the camping type) and festival tents by the masses.
Back in the day, 1 year BC (Before Covid), YNot invited Voice Magazines to come and join them as VIP guests at their famous Peak District festival at Pikehall. Always happy to oblige, the Voice Team set about promoting the festival and preparing for a weekend of music and fun.
Saturday Morning, not entirely bright eyed and bushy tailed!, saw the Voice Team on tour, when we all fully embraced the 80’s films themed fancy dress for Saturday by donning our Care Bear t’s and tutus for the day! Who doesn’t love the ‘Care Bear Countdown’?! Most of us (mentioning no names of those not attending Emily & Liam!) made the morning workout with the wonderful Mr Motivator (what an honor), which was truly fabulous and he set us up for the day, ready for a day of music and dancing, rounded off with the Levellers and the Courteeners.
There were stages aplenty with a myriad of talent for all tastes but between the 17 of us we visited all the stages and were truly entertained for the whole weekend. The days flew by with band after band never failing to get us up dancing and singing, swaying, and laughing. Even Mr Blobby made an appearance with the show stopping “Raised by Owls” performing in the Giant Squid. What a weekend. What an atmosphere. What a festival. Only Lisa’s husband and daughter stayed til the Monday morning as the rest of us are clearly lightweights! However, the whole extended Voice Team recommend attending the 2023 YNot festival – if it is even a patch on the comeback of 2022 – it should not be missed!!

“This judgment gives clarity on the method of calculating holiday pay for people in Mrs Brazel’s position working on permanent ‘zero-hours’ contracts and who are not required to work every week of the leave year. The judgment will be of particular interest to termtime workers at schools, colleges and universities, as well as many other types of workers whose working patterns do not fit the traditional ‘full-time’ model.”

Hopkins Solicitors on 20th of July 2022, saw a landmark judgment in favour of their music teacher client, Mrs Lesley Brazel, by the UK Supreme Court. This decision today follows her case being heard before an employment tribunal (in 2017), the Employment Appeal Tribunal (in 2018) and most recently the Court of Appeal (in 2019).
k 01623 782 783
3PB Barristers were instructed in this appeal by Hopkins Solicitors LLP to act on behalf of clarinet and saxophone teacher Mrs Lesley Brazel, who teaches at the independent Bedford Girls’ School run by the Harpur Trust. She was supported over several years of legal action by the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) and ARAG who provide legal expenses insurance to the ISM’s Mathewlandmark-brazel-case/https://www.3pb.co.uk/3pb-employment-barristers-win-in-members.GullickQCof3PBsaidtoday:
Thanks to the judgement, it will no longer be possible for employers to argue staff who don’t work all year are only entitled to pro-rata holiday based on the hours they work. Today’s decision is also good news for anyone working irregular hours or on zero-hours contracts. From now on, all workers will be due the same legal minimum of 5.6 weeks (28 days for full-time employees), even if there are months during the year when they don’t work.
Example: The Supreme Court judgment ensures leave must be paid at the rate of an ordinary week’s wages (or if pay varies every week, then an average of all the weeks worked in a year). Annual leave calculations are based on weeks, as a person can work a full week or part of one. The law says that someone working a full year is entitled to at least 5.6 weeks of annual leave (28 days for anyone working full-time hours in a week and this can include the eight bank holidays). The judgment means that an employee working all year, but say, for just two days a week is entitled to 11.2 days a year (2 x 5.6 weeks, so 2.24 weeks or 11.2 days).
The UK’s highest court confirmed the rights of part-year and zero hours contract workers to the full 5.6 weeks’ statutory paid holiday provided for under the Working Time Regulations 1998. They rejected the argument from the school that the entitlement of such workers, should be reduced on a pro-rata basis.
Our client Lesley Brazel, the part time music teacher said, “After an eight year legal process I am pleased to have finally secured a basic employment right in accordance with the law and as stated in my employment contract. I would like to thank the Incorporated Society of Musicians, ARAG Insurance, and the legal teams at Hopkins Solicitors and 3PB Barristers, for their outstanding professional, legal and financial assistance throughout. I am an alumna of the Harpur Trust and I have worked for them as a visiting music teacher at Bedford Girls’ School and it’s legacy schools for 20 years, pursuing a career which I am passionate about. Emotionally it has not been an easy journey. I am indebted to my family and friends for giving me the self-confidence to see this through and for their continued encouragement and support throughout this time.”

Partner Carl Wright at Hopkins Solicitors commented: “We are obviously delighted with both the outcome of the appeal and to have been able to clarify the law for the benefit of all of those workers who, like Mrs Brazel, work on term time only contracts. As a consequence of this decision, term time only workers will be entitled to the same minimum annual holiday as those that are contracted to work all year round”. You can find a copy of the full judgement on the Supreme Court website.

This walk originally appeared in the magazines 9 years ago! We were all a little younger then, not least the eponymous Rafa but worry not he will return to these pages soon. In the meantime, his able deputy Baily Boo is here again. This is a walk has become a favourite of ours and it’s one we have done dozens of times, with a few variations as we discovered new paths. But this is the classic, in its original form, for you to explore and enjoy as much as we do.

Some kids wake up with a question on their lips and only stop when they’re back to sleep once again! It’s often funny, sometimes fascinating, and frequently exhausting having a barrage of questions coming at you and we instinctively know that this is the way children learn. In fact, it’s how we ALL learn. A key difference is that whilst little people in the main ask their questions to bigger people, us bigger people increasingly ask Google.
Our schools and workplaces take this natural curiosity with its myriad of questions and do their best to control it into some semblance of order. And so, the five year old starts school and learns very quickly that he or she cannot spew questions all day, that they need to have permission to ask something, usually by raising their hand. And having received that permission, that they will ‘take the floor’ with every eye on them and then lastly, the quality of their question is going to be assessed. Out of the blue, questions are assigned a status: “good question Jonny!” or a response that most of us will recall from our school days, a response that made us feel like we shouldn’t have asked: that our question was mis-timed, or an inconvenience, or just somehow the ‘wrong’ question.
Learning is limited by that, it has to be, doesn’t it? If I don’t understand something and I don’t feel able to ask questions for fear of interrupting, or for any other reason, I’m going to make assumptions, take a guess with what understanding I do have.

Most of us learn to apply filters to what comes out of our mouths and for the shy or the unconfident, our questions mostly remain unasked from that point on.
I asked a client recently what was one of his nightmare scenarios. He said it would be having to go to a social occasion with strangers. I asked him what he would do in that situation, and he said he’d try and find someone he had something in common with. This is probably what most people would choose to do. I suggested that unless what you had in common was a real passion for something, rather than work or where you live, you were unlikely to learn something new or interesting from that kind of conversation. If instead you struck up conversation with someone who you had nothing in common with, or would normally never meet, then you have the makings of something interesting. To extract new knowledge or understanding, you usually need to ask good questions. Maybe we’ll explore some tips for asking powerful questions next time… You don’t have to be a parent, simply being around kids aged 2 to 4 will have given you good insight into their curiosity. Children of that age naturally turn into mini question cannons: “what’s this? How does that work? Why are my bogies green?”.
38 Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads BEAUTY&HEALTH REDISCOVERING YOUR CURIOSITY
Adults often protect their vulnerability by pretending to be knowledgeable or competent at work, for fear of appearing what? Unknowledgeable and incompetent of Justcourse!asone question, quite often leads to another, when questions are stifled or restricted, our curiosity muscle gets weakened and lazy. Progressing into world of work, we are often told that there is no such thing as a ‘dumb’ question, but we have ALL seen eye rolls and mutterings from co-workers when someone does come out with a question that everyone else does consider dumb.

So if want fit, learn/develop or Amy 07949 When I returned to netball after 20 something years away, I won’t lie, there was trepidation! I was unfit, much older obviously, not sure if I could still catch a ball and I was going to be turning up to meet a bunch of strangers. I remember the drive down, I was so nervous and looked to turn the car around on more than one occasion!! I’m so pleased I didn’t though! Yes, it was tough for the first match (first few in all honesty!) but it didn’t take me long to get the bug and want to play more. I also got really lucky with my team. I now know of most of the teams that play across the leagues and they are all really genuinely nice people and so welcoming but team Sirens are just a perfect match for me. You see, it’s not just about the Netball (although, at least 3 nights per week, it has become a huge part of my life now) but we also have a social group and hold some great nights out. It sounds a cliché but I truly have made some wonderful friends for life and I’m the fittest I’ve been in a long time. So, if you are thinking about joining Netball4U, call Amy today, you won’t be sorry.

IMPROVEMENTSHOME 44 Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads Book Review Rose Tremain’s novel Lily immerses the reader in Victorian London –a place of thick freezing fogs, an abandoned baby taken to a foundling hospital, a brutal upbringing by the nurses there and her struggle to make her way in later life, including committing murder and living in fear for her life. The story has a real Dickensian feel to it, both in the warmth – and cruelty – of the characters; and the intense sense of the unfairness of life for many at that time. It’s great storytelling, vivid and emotionally rewarding with a brilliant heroine who you can’t help admiring and rooting for. There’s revenge and redemption – and a story that’s really atmospheric and satisfying. Rose Tremain is a really good writer and this is a smashing tale. The raid took place on the evening of 8th April 1941, starting around 10.30pm. There was no “Alert” warning for the town and the Air-Raid Siren, which was on the roof of Alfreton House, remained silent throughout. Indeed, it was at 3am the following morning when a “Raid Alert sounded and this proved to be a false alarm! So it was that hundreds of mixed type incendiary bombs rained down on the area and the first indication the people had was when houses and other properties were hit. The German bombers responsible were known to be flying north and it is possible that the bombs were jettisoned when the bomber force had failed to locate their intended target or for some other reason. Certainly the Clyde area of Scotland and Coventry were on the agenda for the Luftwaffe that night but we will never know for sure where the intended target was. Of course, it was no consolation for Alfreton and the surrounding area. Sadly Mr John Henry Wetton was to die on the 10th April, 1941, the second fatality of the raid. Next Time – the aftermath and personal recollections.

TUESDAY 8th April 1941 RAID IN NORTH MIDLANDS PLUCKY RESCUES ONE DEATH FROM SHOCK
ALFRETON & DISTRICT HERITAGE TRUST THE NIGHT THE LUFTWAFFE CAME TO
The Newspapers of the day describing an Air Raid on a North Midlands Town (due to the strict wartime censorship rules in place at the time, the location of the raid wasn’t given out) but it was Alfreton and the surrounding villages of Riddings, Somercotes, Westhouses, Stonebroom and Morton that were the target, intentionally or otherwise. What do we know of this raid?
A North Midlands town and adjoining countryside was the scene of an enemy raid on Tuesday night, when hundreds of incendiary bombs were scattered over a wide area. Thanks to fire-watchers, incendiaries were quickly put out, and in most of the country areas there were no casualties and little damage. In one town an elderly man died from shock. A house occupied by Mr and Mrs W H Bullimore was wrecked and an adjoining house occupied by Mr and Mrs Druckley was damaged. There was one death as a result of shock, Mr H M Ollerenshaw, an elderly undertaker who lived in a house in the centre of the bombed area. Two persons, Mr J H Wetton and Mr J Vasey, were taken to hospital after treatment at a first aid post. Mr Wetton was in the act of dealing with a bomb when it exploded and he received head and abdominal injuries. Mr Vasey received injuries to his arm through coming into collision with a vehicle. One resident described the scene as like thousands of fireworks exploding, and the sky was lit up for some time.

Mike’sMusings
The third mum, laughingly acknowledging the coincidence, said that, remarkably, her boy had also been conceived in the back of a car. She hadn’t previously thought of the link but could now see why her husband had suggested Morris for a boy and she’d happily go along with that.
The fourth mother, again previously undecided, and without a hint of embarrassment, stated that conception had occurred in a bus shelter on the A38 in Derby, and for no other reason than she liked the name, her baby boy was to be called Well,Mark.my nephew, whilst still an infant returned to Scotland when my brother was offered a job in Kirkintilloch and has remained north of the border ever However, since.having recently turned 46, and now a proud dad himself, he was wondering if it might be possible to track down those three other babies that he met briefly on 7th/8th July 1976, and asked me to make enquiries. That’s where you come in dear reader. If anyone knows the current whereabouts of 46 year old Morris Oxford, Ford Cortina or Mark Eaton Park, can they please get in touch.
This is a bit of a long shot, but there just might be a reader out there who can put my nephew in touch with three people. Although they almost certainly won’t know him, it’s possible that they live locally, eagerly look forward to reading their copy of Voice Magazine, and crucially, .........were born on 7th July 1976. It’s quite a complicated story, so let’s take this in easy steps. My brother and his heavily pregnant wife, moved to Somercotes from Arbroath in May 1976. As a result – and don’t read too much into this statement as it’s merely a fact! - their child became the first English baby in our family. He, for indeed he was a boy, along with a number of other babies on that day, was safely delivered at the Kings Mill Maternity Unit. After all the usual physical checks, he was declared a ‘fit and bonny bairn’, and with his mother, subsequently transferred to a ward in which three other first-time mums were recovering from their ordeal earlier that day.
I think he might be having us on you know Mike is always glad to hear from you at : mike.musings@outlook.com
Not long afterwards, the midwife popped around to check how they were all doing and asked if they had chosen names for the new arrivals. My brother’s wife, never one to knowingly turn down the chance of having a blether, said that as the child had been conceived in Scotland, it had been decided in advance that, if a boy, the baby was to be called Scot.
The midwife then asked the other mums and each said that they remained undecided. However, one of them, an Italian, said that my sister-in-law had given her an idea, and as her boy had been conceived in the back of a car, he’d be given the name Ford.

THE LOCAL BREW
RIPLEY
POP
In 1577 it was reported that Ripley and Pentrich had 10 alehouses (in what must have been very small places), most of which would brew their own beer. In the early 1700s, Charles Horne ran an alehouse at the gates of Butterley Hall, then owned by his family. There was also a brewery, as the name indicated, in Malthouse Yard. In the nineteenth century, though, there was one commercial brewery in the town, variously known as Ripley Old Brewery, Greenwich Brewery or Queens Brewery. It was probably started around 1807 by the Fletcher family, one of whom, William Henry, was also one of Ripley’s first doctors. They seem to have run the Red Lion at one time, but later became “common brewers”, selling their beer to pubs. The brewery was situated on either side of Cromford Road, just behind the Market Place, where Amber Valley’s offices and car park are. At one time there was a tunnel underneath the road, so that the malt could be carried from the malthouse on one side to the brewery on the other without getting wet.The Fletchers sold the business in 1823 to their partner, William Kirkland, John Fletcher having moved to a new brewery at Cavendish Bridge and William Fletcher to buildings behind the newly built Greenwich House (now Zycomm). Kirkland went bankrupt in 1828 and the old brewery was hardly used until 1877 when it was rebuilt by John Woolley but closed in 1888. In 1897 the Smedley family bought the Greenwich brewery to produce mineral waters.Itwould be nearly another hundred years before brewing was restarted locally, with the growth of microbreweries, at least two of which are currently in operation. As summer moves along it is clear how important to wildlife are the thousands of private gardens across the Peak District. Taken individually and as a whole they can make an enormous difference to nature and bring benefit particularly to local birdlife. An example is with the numerous birds visiting garden bird-tables and feeders and others nesting in gardens and especially in artificial nestboxes. This provision makes a hugely valuable contribution to nature conservation, not just in towns and cities, but all across the Peak District. This vital support helps birds whilst breeding but then also through the lean times of winter – and hence bird survival to breed the following spring. In winter, nest-boxes also double-up as roosting sites that are safe, warm, and secure during a cold night. However, the benefit of all this effort is not one way because in a ‘garden’ we also gain from contact with nature and the sheer joy of watching local wildlife such as birds close at hand. In others words, there is something selfish about wildlife garden as well – and indeed, why not? A garden is generally a small space where we hold dominion over our patch to shape it and to create something of pleasure and joy for us humans and for nature too. Moreover, this pleasure gained is significantly connected to our intimate association with wildlife that a carefully thought-out and designed garden will bring. So the garden often mimics nature but scaled down and more controlled, and through this it generates opportunities for us and wildlife to share a space. The beneficial effects of this approach become all the more obvious as numbers of blue tits, great tits, and coal tits for example, are fledging and dispersing. Suddenly the bird-feeders are overrun with baby birds all vying for vital food. This leads to another matter which is the benefit of still feeding, albeit with a mix of seeds, nuts, grain, and fat-balls, throughout the summer. This is hugely important for adult birds already worn out by rearing maybe twelve fledglings from a single brood. Any help in finding suitable food will be a great bonus. But there is a further benefit which is that the young birds in particular, grow up knowing where your feeders are and will return when the autumn harvest has gone and winter cold snaps in. This is the two-way gain as the birds come to reliable supplies of food and you have the birds already hard-wired to come to your garden feeders. By late summer, the adults and youngsters will have formed into flocks often ranging around over quite a wide area. Then, as the pickings become slimmer following the post-summer and early autumnal glut, they will start to return to your garden. This is where the early training and prior knowledge reap the greatest rewards. Also, in winter, birds often roost communally and are able through their behaviour to communicate to each other where good supplies of food are to be found. Hopefully, your birds will bring others with them!

All need to be lifted carefully trying to avoid root damage. Some, like hostas can be pulled apart into clumps, others have obvious small individual plantlets which can be planted individually. Hellebores can be cut with a knife to five or six shoots per clump; large perennials may need two back to back forks to prise them apart, crocosmia produce chains of corms which can be planted as chains or individuals. Mix garden compost into the soil when planting and remember to keep watering them well to give them a good chance. Daffodil bulbs can go in now, tulips in October or November. Don’t be tempted to plant at less than the recommended depth, they’re less likely to flower. Get wallflowers in now for next year, they’ll flower earlier and prolong their flowering season. Gardener’s Calendar Although the garden will still be full of growing, September is also the time to look to next year. If you’re looking for plants which will continue to give a show up to the first frosts, roses, dahlias and Japanese anemones are your best bet. Top Tip:

Jim Coyle What’s in a (boy’s) name?? 'C'

I’ve written about the follies of fashion in a previous edition but it strikes me that nothing exemplifies the subject more than when it comes to naming babies. When I was young it seemed that all old men were called Herbert or Albert, middle aged men were called Keith and youngsters were called Terry. I defy you to find anyone aged 30 to 70 named Herbert today and good luck finding a baby named Keith. Baby boys used to be named after their grandfather’s.... not today. Show me a 60 year old called Zane, Mateo or Levi and I’ll buy you a pint next time I’m in The Dog at Pentrich. I find it interesting that biblical names seem to be making a huge comeback while at the same time the number of churchgoers is dwindling. I’m looking forward to meeting my first little Methuselah or Goliath. Where are the baby Clives and Garys? Where are the Colins and Grahams? It would seem that their time in the spotlight is over.
As I get older I’m starting to meet my first 50 year old Jasons. Is it just me or does that sound strange to other oldies too?
So for the foreseeable future I look forward to sharing the planet with Elijah, Isaac, Ethan and Luca. I wonder if I’ll live long enough to welcome a baby Alan or Brian?
