Expensive holidays, lots of the team on hols, can never get a strong netball squad together! And it signifies the beginning of the end of summer. Throw in a few personal sadness issues this month and it’s taken over from Jan as the rubbish month this year! However, such is life, nothing is all bad and I went camping for the first time in probably 20 years. I mean, I say camping, I had a glamping wigwam bell tent thingy with an electric power point and a memory foam mattress but it still counts! Tell you what though, I could cope with most of it but the toilets…..I mean……do they do that stuff to their toilets at home or just turn into an animal when they are camping/going to festivals? I don’t want to cast aspersions here, each to their own but what is the maximum number of people you need in a group to turn feral, lol??! Anyway, a good time was had by all, have a read about it on pg 24-25. I also had a fandabbydosy time at the Commonwealth games for 1 full day of Netball games. Absolutely exhausting (and no, I wasn’t even playing!!) but I didn’t get to the 2012 Olympics so I’ve resolved, ever since then, to make sure I attend these sporting events. It’s great for the cities involved and I only wished that I’d managed to get tickets for some other sports as well – lt was so well organised and managed. So, I don’t want to be the first to say it, but as we’re promoting and giving away tickets to Matlock Illuminations this month – we are clearly on the downhill run to the man in the red suit month. I’m not sure what this year’s festivities will bring, bearing in mind the misery and the pinch we’re all experiencing amid this cost-of-living crisis, which is imminent but hopefully this month we’ll have an active Government in place. Whatever your ‘team’ you can’t be happy with it at the minute – so we all live in hope that they exact the power to work in our best interests, which we choose to bestow upon them….if not, is it revolution time yet?! Asking for a friend?

PS: Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

Thank you so much for the lovely feedback on last month’s front covers and articles. It’s always lovely to get such wonderful feedback – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – it’s really easy to phone up irate and complain about something, but as a society we don’t bother to do nice things very often, seemingly. However, a few readers have taken the time to write to us and also call us this month and it’s been really lovely – so thank you, you are appreciated. It’s nice to be nice! This month we have the Macmillan Coffee Morning on our front covers with another funky new design style and Laura has written another cracking article. I had no idea about the history and what a wonderful legacy he set up –truly visionary & incredibly altruistic. He was clearly ahead of his time.

Happy reading, Emily x And all the VOICE MAGAZINES TEAM

Next Generation Home improvements, based on Butterley Hill in Ripley, are now in their 13th year since starting trading in 2010. The company specialises in installing high quality resin-bound driveways and patios, as well as maintenance free composite fencing and aluminium gates to the local people of Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire. Like many construction companies, Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns were an enormous challenge for Next Generation Home Improvements in terms of supply chain and the necessary working restrictions. But the company has gone from strength to strength since then with many customers trusting us to undertake work on their property and being delighted with the finished results. Sales Director, Lee Goddard says “We are a local company that employs all our staff from the local area. We pride ourselves on working to high standards & offering unrivalled customer service. We understand the importance of treating every potential customer properly, from initially quoting for a job, through correctly surveying the work, making sure the customer is delighted with the finished work and also our after-care service. The majority of our work comes through recommendations, so if we deliver a high standard of work we often benefit from extra work from envious friends or neighbours” Lee pinpoints the company’s key to success down to the unrivalled dedication & skill of their fitting teams and also the high quality of products that the company use which means the installations don’t just look good, they require no maintenance & stay looking good in the long term. The company would be delighted to quote on any customers work involving resin driveways, patios, composite fencing or gates. Simply drop them on 01773 303181

Finally, when we think of Macmillan, most of us will picture the nurses. These specialists have experience and qualifications in cancer care and are able to help individuals through diagnosis, treatment, aftercare and with ongoing support. Within this group of extraordinary individuals are palliative care nurses who help manage the symptoms of advanced cancer. They are experts in managing symptoms such as pain, sickness or breathlessness and can also help and support family members.

Somewhat fittingly, Douglas used £10 that his father had given him to set up the society. That £10, equivalent to roughly £1200 today, was the start of the Macmillan story. In the early days, they hand delivered food and coal to people in need, as well as arranging holidays and trips for people with cancer (and their families).

These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author.

Macmillan had envisioned “homes for cancer patients”, and although he sadly died of cancer himself in 1969, Macmillan played a key role in the creation of the hospice care system in the 70s and 80s.

With an estimated 50% of us expected to experience cancer at some point in our lives, perhaps that destigmatisation has been Douglas Macmillan’s most important legacy.

Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. To find out more visit www.landgassociates.co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351 341

This year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning is scheduled for Friday, 30th September – will you be taking part?

In 1911 a young man by the name of Douglas Macmillan watched his father die of cancer; the pain and suffering he saw inspired him to found the “Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer”.

Fast forwarding to today, Macmillan offers a wide range of support to individuals, employers and health care Financialprofessionals.grantsare available to help with the extra costs living with cancer can bring, as well as advice on claiming benefits and what to do if paying bills is difficult. And, of course, simply knowing that there are people on the other end of a telephone ready to help can bring great relief to someone newly diagnosed. Email and online chat services are also offered for those of us who prefer the written word.

Time for a quick history lesson…

Since that inauspicious start, the annual coffee morning has raised a staggering £290million for Macmillan - £11million last year alone, but what does that money fund? How will the price of your coffee and cake on 30th September help people in the UK?

After 111 years, the charity’s ethos has never deviated from Douglas Macmillan’s original statement – “we stand for Betterness”, and has sought to overturn the stigma and dread surrounding a diagnosis of cancer.

10 Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads FACTSELEPHANT

The first home visits, offering practical support to those in need, began in the 1930s, and by the 1970s, Macmillan nurses were established, enabling people to stay in their own homes whilst undergoing Douglastreatment.

Coffee and Cake against Cancer Macmillan Coffee Morning 2022

It seems like the Macmillan Coffee Morning has been around forever, doesn’t it? But would it surprise you to know that the first one was held in 1990, and on a very small scale? It did me.

It’s great storytelling, vivid and emotionally with a brilliant heroine who you can’t help and rooting for. There’s revenge and redemption – and a story that’s really atmospheric and satisfying. Rose Tremain is a really good writer and this is a smashing tale.

Book Review Rose Tremain’s novel Lily immerses the reader in Victorian London –a place of thick freezing fogs, an abandoned baby taken to a foundling hospital, a brutal upbringing by the nurses there and her struggle to make her way in later life, including committing murder and living in fear for her life. The story has a real Dickensian feel to it, both in the warmth – and cruelty – of the characters; and the intense sense of the unfairness of life for many at that time.

Back in the day, 1 year BC (Before Covid), YNot invited Voice Magazines to come and join them as VIP guests at their famous Peak District festival at Pikehall. Always happy to oblige, the Voice Team set about promoting the festival and preparing for a weekend of music and fun.

On Tour at

It has been 3 Years in the waiting, but Voice Magazines hit the festival scene at long last!

Michelle & Family, Danielle & her son, Lisa & Family and Neil and his Family all arrived on the Thursday afternoon/ early evening and made the most of it. They pitched up their tents and headed straight for THE BIG GIN (that’s the main stage, not the bottle!). They all emersed themselves in the music of The Kooks for the evening and soaked up the Sarahatmosphere.&herhusband arrived next, for Friday lunchtime for a bit of afternoon chill with Gabrielle before Emily & Liam arrived in the evening, just in time for the Manic Street Preachers and the Stereophonics

This invite was put on hold whilst the world mourned their social lives but then we got the call, YNot 2022 was ON, the cheers were heard throughout the Midlands from our office! As the line up grew so did our excitement. Bell tents were purchased by the Directors (Emily, not the camping type) and festival tents by the masses.

Saturday Morning, not entirely bright eyed and bushy tailed!, saw the Voice Team on tour, when we all fully embraced the 80’s films themed fancy dress for Saturday by donning our Care Bear t’s and tutus for the day! Who doesn’t love the ‘Care Bear Countdown’?! Most of us (mentioning no names of those not attending Emily & Liam!) made the morning workout with the wonderful Mr Motivator (what an honor), which was truly fabulous and he set us up for the day, ready for a day of music and dancing, rounded off with the Levellers and the Courteeners.

There were stages aplenty with a myriad of talent for all tastes but between the 17 of us we visited all the stages and were truly entertained for the whole weekend. The days flew by with band after band never failing to get us up dancing and singing, swaying, and laughing. Even Mr Blobby made an appearance with the show stopping “Raised by Owls” performing in the Giant Squid. What a weekend. What an atmosphere. What a festival. Only Lisa’s husband and daughter stayed til the Monday morning as the rest of us are clearly lightweights! However, the whole extended Voice Team recommend attending the 2023 YNot festival – if it is even a patch on the comeback of 2022 – it should not be missed!!

“The League of Ovaltineys”, was broadcast to Great Britain by Radio Luxembourg on Sunday evenings at 5:30 PM. Beginning in February 1935, it was transmitted until September 1939, when the outbreak of World War II forced closure of the station, and restarted again after the war from 1952. Listeners could obtain badges, pins, and secret codes. The Ovaltineys advertising jingle, which featured The Beverley Sisters, was regarded as one of the most successful jingles of the era. Thankfully, Ovaltine is still widely available and will continue to provide a comforting bedtime drink to generations yet to come. Night Night. Janet and Paul Barrass are All Around the Shire. Find us on or for more information.

Ovaltine was first produced in Switzerland in 1904. Known originally as Ovomaltine, its main ingredients were eggs and malt to be made into a bedtime drink with warm milk. Its inventor, Dr George Wander, believed it to be a nutritious drink which would go some way to alleviate high child mortality. In the kitchen at Bakewell Old House Museum, we have a number of beautiful wooden blocks carved from straight grain wood such as pear or apple. Often, they are mistakenly believed to be shortbread or butter moulds, but they are in fact, gingerbread moulds. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) was used in cooking and as traditional medicine as long ago as 400BC. It is believed, Confucius insisted ginger be on his table as an aid to digestion and a sweetener of the breath. By the 11th century ginger was well known in Britain and was even recommended as treatment for the plague. In those times spices were extremely expensive, so apart from adding to the flavour of dishes, using them in cooking was a way to demonstrate your wealth. Gingerbread, also known in medieval times as spice bread or pepper cake, became a favourite treat throughout Europe. Ginger came to the attention of Queen Elizabeth I, and ginger plants were carried on ships to the New World colonies of the Caribbean where it could be easily grown and cultivated for the domestic market at a cheaper price. Originally gingerbread was made from a recipe where raisedpeeledours.pressedThiswereingredientstheboiledtoformapaste.wasthenrolledoutandintomouldslikeWhenbackthepasterevealedimprintsoftheelaboratecarvings.Aperfectspiceforthecoldwintermonths,itwasconsidered good luck to eat a piece gingerbreadofboughtatafair.Knownasa‘fairing’,thisgingerbreadwasformedintodifferentshapesandoftendecorated.SweetbakedgingerbreadfigurinesweregivenasgiftstoRoyalcourtiersatChristmas.Gingerbreadmen were also used to decorate trees in festive holiday scenes with accompanying gingerbread houses and gingerbread animals all decorated with sweet icing. German gingerbread Christmas decorations were traditionally elaborate and made popular by Grimm’s Fairy Tales, in particular the story of ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Ginger is believed to have antibacterial, antifungal, pain-relieving, anti-ulcer qualities; the ability to quell travel sickness, to be effective in treating travel sickness, to strengthen the heart, arteries, and capillaries and to improve blood circulation. Perennials, the likes of anemone, euphorbias, sea holly, primulas and verbena can all be divided now to create new plants for next year. All need to be lifted carefully trying to avoid root damage. Some, like hostas can be pulled apart into clumps, others have obvious small individual plantlets which can be planted individually. Hellebores can be cut with a knife to five or six shoots per clump; large perennials may need two back to back forks to prise them apart, crocosmia produce chains of corms which can be planted as chains or individuals. Mix garden compost into the soil when planting and remember to keep watering them well to give them a good chance. Daffodil bulbs can go in now, tulips in October or November. Don’t be tempted to plant at less than the recommended depth, they’re less likely to flower. Get wallflowers in now for next year, they’ll flower earlier and prolong their flowering season. Although the garden will still be full of growing, September is also the time to look to next

As summer moves along it is clear how important to wildlife are the thousands of private gardens across the Peak District. Taken individually and as a whole they can make an enormous difference to nature and bring benefit particularly to local birdlife. An example is with the numerous birds visiting garden bird-tables and feeders and others nesting in gardens and especially in artificial nestboxes. This provision makes a hugely valuable contribution to nature conservation, not just in towns and cities, but all across the Peak District. This vital support helps birds whilst breeding but then also through the lean times of winter – and hence bird survival to breed the following spring. In winter, nest-boxes also double-up as roosting sites that are safe, warm, and secure during a cold night. However, the benefit of all this effort is not one way because in a ‘garden’ we also gain from contact with nature and the sheer joy of watching local wildlife such as birds close at hand. In others words, there is something selfish about wildlife garden as well – and indeed, why not? A garden is generally a small space where we hold dominion over our patch to shape it and to create something of pleasure and joy for us humans and for nature too. Moreover, this pleasure gained is significantly connected to our intimate association with wildlife that a carefully thought-out and designed garden will bring. So the garden often mimics nature but scaled down and more controlled, and through this it generates opportunities for us and wildlife to share a space. The beneficial effects of this approach become all the more obvious as numbers of blue tits, great tits, and coal tits for example, are fledging and dispersing. Suddenly the bird-feeders are overrun with baby birds all vying for vital food. This leads to another matter which is the benefit of still feeding, albeit with a mix of seeds, nuts, grain, and fat-balls, throughout the summer. This is hugely important for adult birds already worn out by rearing maybe twelve fledglings from a single brood. Any help in finding suitable food will be a great bonus. But there is a further benefit which is that the young birds in particular, grow up knowing where your feeders are and will return when the autumn harvest has gone and winter cold snaps in. This is the two-way gain as the birds come to reliable supplies of food and you have the birds already hard-wired to come to your garden feeders. By late summer, the adults and youngsters will have formed into flocks often ranging around over quite a wide area. Then, as the pickings become slimmer following the post-summer and early autumnal glut, they will start to return to your garden. This is where the early training and prior knowledge reap the greatest rewards. Also, in winter, birds often roost communally and are able through their behaviour to communicate to each other where good supplies of food are to be found. Hopefully, your birds will bring others with them!
