Derbyshire Police Update The South Normanton and Pinxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team includes Sgt. Simon Street, PC Pete Wilbourne, PCSO Becky Davis and PCSO Marrion Jeffery. They cover the South Normanton and Pinxton area and work in partnership with other agencies to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and resolve any community concerns or issues.

Every three months the team hold a meeting to offer local residents the chance to help set priorities for the area. The last meeting was held in January and it was decided officers would target: Damage to vehicles on Birchwood Lane, South Normanton, and the surrounding area. Increased police patrols will take place and residents are encouraged to let the team know of any Information or incidents so that they can take positive action to help resolve this problem and identify those responsible. This priority will be reviewed at the next meeting on Wednesday, April 23 at 6.30pm at Pinxton Village Hall, Kirkstead Road. All local residents are welcome to attend. The team also hold monthly surgeries in both South Normanton and Pinxton. You can catch officers between 6pm and 7pm on the second Wednesday in every month at Pinxton Village Hall, or on the second Thursday in every month at The Post Mill Centre in South Normanton. In the meantime, if you have any concerns about crime, safety or anti-social behaviour then you can contact the team by calling 101, or emailing alfreton.neighbourhoods@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk. Gardeners Calendar - March

It may have been a dismal winter but for even the most pessimistic gardener, Spring is on the way – more light and even slightly warmer days mean growth. Hellebores and snowdrops will either be coming to an end soon or already be finished. Divide snowdrops while the green leaves are still strong to create next year’s new clumps and divide hellebores once they’ve finished flowering. Hellebores will also self-seed like mad, so keep an eye out for seedlings which you can re-plant for next year. Top dress containers – even replacing the top few inches of compost can make a terrific difference to the amount of nutrition a plant gets. Put supports in now for fast growing perennials, once they’ve started shooting up it’s a lot harder to train them. Try using flexible bush off-cuts if you’re looking for an alternative to expensive plant supports, or threading string through upright sticks.

Top Tip If your garden has been really waterlogged this winter, try and avoid walking on the grass, a plank laid across the grass to get to flowerbeds would be better than trampling it down as it takes a long time for it to recover if damaged so early.

12 The recent soggy weather has tested the fortitude of even the most hardy walkers. Personally I prefer my walking boots to a pair of wellies but it seems these days I will need a pair of waders! Hopefully this walk will keep the mud levels low but if your dog is anything like ours this won’t matter a jot! Hope you enjoy it. If so why not let us know... 5 mile circular walk from Doe Hill Country park via Tibshelf A moderate and varied walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2 – 2 1/2 hours. The route is fairly flat with some short inclines. The terrain is mostly on well laid trails but there are a few muddy and uneven sections so a good pair of boots or wellies is highly recommended, especially at this time of the year.

1. Park at Doehill Country park on Doe Hill Lane between Stonebroom and Tibshelf. From the car park take the path by the information sign. 2. Follow this path as it winds around until it joins with another path from the right, then take the next left, almost immediately. Follow this path again as it winds until it joins with another path from the right and again take the next left, almost immediately. Follow this path until it brings you to Alfreton Road. 3. Cross the road and take the wide track (Gloves Lane) after a metal barrier on the other side. Follow this track for approximately 100 meters before taking the second of two paths on your left (the Silverhill Trail. 4. Continue along the trail until you meet a sign on your right. Take the horse stile on your left towards the ‘Five Pits Trail’. Follow this path until you meet a cross roads, taking the first path on your er right. (This route can be fairly muddy. If eader R you are keen to avoid this, you can Off continue ahead here on the Five Pits Trail to take you to point 7.) 5. Follow this path until it joins Saw pit lane, bearing left. After another 200 meters take a path on your left signposted Tibshelf ½ 50 FREE Messy Mutz mile. Follow the path as it joins Wetton Lane and follow until you reach the main poop scoop bags road (B6014). with every purchase of 6. Turn left here and cross the road at the Millers Complete Dog Food crossing before joining the five pits trail with this coupon directly ahead. Keep to the main path downhill to a cross roads. Take the second track on your left. There is a public footpath sign and the track is Church Lane.

What happens if I don’t have a LPA?

Wills - Probate Powers Of Attorney What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows some else to manage the financial affairs of another person. It gives someone you trust the power to act on your behalf. It can be used when the person has full mental capacity and can continue to operate after the donor has lost mental capacity. You can decide exactly how much authority your ‘Attorney’ would have and whether you want to impose any restrictions.

If you do not make a LPA those who wish to assist you will need to apply to the Court of Protection in order to act on your behalf. The Court of Protection will consider the facts before it and decide on what is in your best interests and may appoint a deputy to act on your behalf. Dealing with your financial affairs would be virtually impossible without someone authorised to act on your behalf, relatives can face long delays, expense and distress if they have to go through the Court of Protection to be permitted to do so.

How much will a Lasting Power of Attorney cost? Single Lasting Power of Attorney (a single document for a single person) £275 Mirror Lasting Powers of Attorney (two documents drafted as a ‘matched pair’ for a couple) £500. However, a LPA can be carried out at the same time as your Will, which has an overall saving as opposed to doing them separately.

Who Should I Appoint? When appointing attorneys you can appoint family or friends but it needs to be people you can trust. However if you have substantial assets or a complicated portfolio of assets then you may wish to appoint a professional attorney, for example an accountant or a lawyer.

Book Review - Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

Do you ever think about the way your life might have been different if one thing had changed? Small things like deciding not to go to a party where you met your future partner, being sneezed on by someone who gave you flu so you missed the job interview which would have meant you living in a different part of the country with different friends who introduced you to other people who... – the possibilities are endless once you start.... Kate Atkinson’s Life after Life, winner of the 2014 Costa Novel, explores the notion of how our lives, which seem so solid to us, could change in a second because of seemingly unimportant things. Ursula Todd’s life begins several times. Things happen to her or don’t and they

change the course of her life and other people’s lives. Sometimes there are echoes of something which she can’t quite get hold of, which influence what she does. So it’s one person’s life, in different incarnations, with the characters around her featuring in different ways. It may sound complicated but Atkinson writes in such a direct way that you catch on to the style very quickly. It’s a clever idea and the style of writing, if you’ve been used to Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie detective novels is very different, although her warmth and understanding of what makes people tick is still very much in evidence. Interesting and intriguing and thought provoking.

Leabrooks Gallery has now become Leabooks Arts Complex, a name more suited to the range of interests it represents: fine art, sculpture, pottery, jewellery, items for interiors and bespoke framing take pride of place but there is also a Conference Centre, Monet’s Garden and the Secret Garden. As well as a diverse mixture of art throughout the four rooms of the Gallery there are fortnightly exhibitions dedicated to the work of one artist in the Main Exhibition Room, and a number of events throughout the year. The Christmas Fair, held late in November, and the Valentines’ Fair, held early in February, provide showcasing the work of a number of artists opportunities to buy unique gifts while the and raising donations for the NSPCC. During Summer Fair in July is a charity event the Spring Bank holiday several artists demonstrate their skills here as part of the Derbyshire Arts celebration.
