Ox Travels - Introduced by Michael Palin
One of the great things about travelling is the people you happen to meet. Some weird, some wonderful, some who lodge in your memory even though you’ll never see them again - some you’ll de initely want to forget. Ox Travels is a collection of 36 short travellers’ tales, written by many of the best travel writers around – people like Jan Morris, Paul Theroux and Michael Palin but also including contributors from a brilliant new wave of travel writers. Their theme is those chance encounters we make along the way. They take us all over the globe, from Africa, America (North and South), Asia, and even Antarctica and range from the inspiring and heartbreaking, to the funny and downright strange. It’s a fantastic book to dip in and out of, or read in huge chunks. All the stories are true, all the meetings real. The other thing about this book is that proceeds support the work of Oxfam and all the writers have donated their royalties to the charity. The Oxfam link also explains the strange title – a previous book of short iction was less strangely called Ox Tales. This is a book for plane or train journeys; but also one to perhaps read in bed or in front of the ire while it rains outside. As Michael Palin writes in his introduction “It ranges right across the world and will hopefully restore your faith in the human race. Just like Oxfam in fact.”

Everything we do is about valuing and suppor ng people with a learning disability, and their families and carers. A learning disability is caused by the way the brain develops. There are many different types and most develop before a baby is born, during birth or because of a serious illness in early childhood. Learning disability is life long. There is no cure and has a significant impact on a person’s life. Here at the Mencap Regional Fundraising team we arrange a number of events each year to ensure that the work we do to support families can con nue. We also arrange bespoke events for individuals, groups and companies and unlike a lot of other chari es we don’t just sit behind a desk and send a thank you le er to you a er the event – we are right there with you helping to arrange, set up and clean away a erwards. Get in touch with the team at mids.fundraising@mencap.org.uk or call our Senior Regional Fundraising Manager, Marie Brown on 07852 184543 and join in the fun.

Gas Safe Register, the of icial list of registered gas engineers, is launching its irst ever Gas Safety Week, aiming to raise awareness of gas safety in the home. Paul Johnston, Chief Executive at Gas Safe Register said: “ Every Year, far too many people suffer from preventable gas related accidents, such as gas leaks, explosions, ires and carbon monoxide poisoning. In the last year alone 10 people died and a further 330 were hospitalised. With Gas Safety Week we want to encourage the public to only use Gas Safe registered engineers to it, ix and service their gas appliances and to raise awareness of the importance of having an annual safety check. We are asking people in the Amber Valley area to take care and be safe. If maintained and installed properly, gas appliances are safe. If neglected, gas appliances can kill. In Gas Safety Week we want everyone to ind out when they last had all their gas appliances, including cookers, ires and boilers, checked. If this was over a year ago, you should get them checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer as soon as possible to help ensure that your family and home are safe.”

DVD Review - Hop
25
Hop tells the story of E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand), the next in line in the Easter Bunny dynasty that has stretched back 4000 years but he is struggling under the weight of expectation. What E.B. really wants to do is play the drums but the problem is his father has different ideas. So 2 weeks before Christmas E.B. runs off to Bind his fortune in Hollywood. When he gets there he bumps into Fred (James Marsden), a slacker looking for his purpose in life, whose chance encounter with E.B’s father when he was a child draws the two together to help them both realise their destinies. However, there are a few obstacles to overcome along the way. The Red Berets - an elite band of ninja bunnies. An audition with the Hoff (David Hassellhoff) and the evil (and hilarious) Carlos - a chick with a bad attitude and delusions of grandeur. This Bilm comes from the creators of despicable me and it’s fair to say if you liked that Bilm you will enjoy this Bilm also. There are plenty of laughs for all the family and the mix of live action and animation is seamless. So if you’re looking for a Bilm to make you smile and feel good about eating chocolate you should give Hop a look.

Gardeners Calendar - September
Divide border perennials – the tops will be dying back while the roots are still active. Aerate the lawn with a fork and re-seed bare patches while there’s still warmth in the soil for grass to grow. Over-winter tender plants from containers by lifting, knocking off compost, trimming tip and roots and covering roots in a tray of moist compost. Keep in a frost free place.
Top Tip - Rake leaves from your lawn and store them, moist, in a bin bag to create leaf mould for next year’s planting.
