Welcome to Amber Valley Voice

3

It’s been a crazy busy month this month, two Don’t forget to weddings and a holiday for me with Carla’s steady hand on the AVV wheel making sure everything mention the Voice runs like clockwork! Of course, prior to the when you use any of holiday, chaos ensued...we discovered what we the companies in this thought was a wasp nest at home, until our good Magazine friends at GB Pest Control came out and identified it as a honey bees nest...in which case, we just have to put up with the buzzing and that is to name just one calamity! It’s all good fun though! I also had my debut on the Sally Pepper show, ’loudmouth’ slot on Radio Derby (no puns please!), which was great but my feet had hardly touched British Soil, so I didn’t really feel as up to press with current affairs as usual but I seem to have got through it with only mild mocking from friends and family!! Anyway, that’s enough about my latest 4 weeks. Heather at Body & Sole has also had a visit from the competition winner, Claire Forrest, to redeem her prize. Your nails look beautiful Claire. Lots of fun things going on over the next month including the South Wingfield Social Club Summer Fayre...come along, you know you want to!!

Book Review - Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver Bored and confounded by small-town American farmlife, a lunk of a husband and two small children, Dellarobia sets off up the mountain at the back of her home for an assignation with a young man. Instead she finds the breathtaking beauty of a swarm, millions-strong, of Monarch butterflies, driven from the course of their normal migration by changes in the world’s climate. What the God-fearing people of Feathertown come to see as a fortunate miracle turns out to be a possible tragedy – these intensely orange beauties are not meant to hibernate in the wet and cold of the Appalachians. But they bring scientists in their wake and as they head for what may be their species’ final sleep, Dellarobia starts to emerge from the stifling cocoon of her life

and takes up the fight to alert her fellow humans to what they might be doing to the planet. Flight Behaviour, by Barbara Kingsolver, takes on big issues. It’s not just about climate change, for which she draws on her background in biology. It’s also about class and poverty and why we believe the things we do. It’s a warmhearted book, sometimes serious but also often funny and Dellarobia and her best friend Dovey have a fine sense of the ridiculous and a clear sight of their own and others’ weaknesses which makes them very engaging characters. Barbara Kingsolver has a brilliant ability to make you empathise with people and causes you may not recognise in your own life. She cares and she makes you care too.

We are continuing to venture a little beyond the Amber Valley to bring you the best local walks. As usual there will be plenty of chances to let your dog off the lead but take care on roads and around livestock. Again, we would like to thank the fantastic Jill and David Hallam from JH Legal Services for contributing this lovely walk. If you know of a nice walk in the local area that you would like to share, please get in touch. Email us at info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638. 4 mile circular walk from Tibshelf Ponds along the Five Pits Trail A relatively easy walk for you and your dog which is fairly flat. The route should take around 2 hours. The terrain is fairly even but it is always worth wearing a good pair of boots especially if it has been wet or icy. 1. From inside the car park go through the gap to the left of the car park entrance and turn left onto a path passing a pond on your left and then a pond on your right. Continue ahead until you arrive at two paths turning left. Ignore the sharp left turn signposted for “Five Pits Trail” and take the other left path heading gently uphill. 2. Continue along this path passing through a metal width restriction gate. Continue straight ahead until you reach a right turn. At this point the path becomes a lane. Continue straight on, signposted for “Saw Pit Lane”. 3. Passing a lane on the left signposted for “Tibshelf” continue straight to cross the motorway. The lane then bears left and runs alongside the motorway for some time. After passing a few buildings on the left you will reach a main road. Turn left along the road to pass back over the motorway. After crossing the motorway turn immediately right in front of the first house to go up a lane. 4. When entering the lane you will see a stile on your right. Ignore this and go straight up the lane keeping houses on your left and trees on your right. At the end of the houses continue straight, der keeping the hedge on your left. At the very end of a e R ffer the hedgerow turn 90 degrees left to cross an O open filed on a thin grass path. (NOTE: there may be a diversion in place at the stile, follow this and it will bring you out at the end of the hedge.) 5. Continue across the field and then pass some tall conifers on your left. Continue straight to pass through a gap in the fence and onto a main road. Cross the road and turn right and after passing house number 69 on the left turn left through a gap in a stone wall. This path will take you between the with every purchase of buildings and on into a field with a fence on your left.. Millers Complete Dog Food 6. Continue straight, keeping the fence and eventually a with this coupon hedge on your left, and into a small dip with a yellow marker post. Leaving the hedge behind go straight to cross an open field towards a second yellow marker post and a hedgerow. Continue straight for a short distance, keeping the hedge on your right. When you reach a hedgerow directly in front of you turn right through a wooden gate.

Gardeners Calendar - August

Cut back the foliage and stems of plants which have died back, to discourage disease and pests. This is a good time to get plants for free by taking cuttings of tender perennials such as geraniums and pelargoniums. Cuttings should be taken from young non flowering shoots if possible and about 2-4inches long. Cut just below a leaf joint and trim back leaves. Dip in rooting compost and insert in a small pot of compost with plenty of vermiculite. Make sure there is contact between the stem and compost. Leave in green house or light windowsill and ensure they are kept watered but not wet. Some alpines have a tendency to develop patches of die-back as the summer goes on. They can often be encouraged back into life by introducing gritty compost into those patches.

Top Tip

This is a good time to start a compost bin – use plenty of spent plants and grass cuttings to build up a bit of bulk. Try to collect enough material to make layers of at least 30cm or more in the compost bin, but as well as plant matter mix in woody prunings and some cardboard packaging eg. cereal boxes as this helps create air spaces within the heap. It may also help if you put a few woody plant stems or small twigs on the bottom first as this will improve the air circulation and drainage.

I'm probably going to alienate a few of you this month; those of you who don't like football are bored just about NOW. Some of those that do like it will be upset as well, but that's life.

officials are just two of the things that have been drove other supporters to despair. It's not all about success though, because I know of a couple of Derbyshire bred Everton followers in Swanwick. So What is it that makes some people in a Peter Kay voice, 'what's all that 'support' teams from miles away? My about'. theory is that it's all to do with which What I do respect and admire are the teams are successful when you're an 8 people who support their local team year old, which is very immature indeed. through thick and thin. Around Is this why we see so many Man Utd, Swanwick there are plenty of Derby/ Chelsea or Liverpool shirts in Forest/Alfreton and even Chesterfield Derbyshire? Apparently statistics fans, so stop having a go at each other suggest that there are 900 trillion MUFC for a day and celebrate the fact that you fans in the world and that 92% of people all support reasonably local teams and who support a team outside their area even if you aren't winning every week at were fed with formula milk. The nearest least you have your dignity. Wouldn't it some of the fans around here have got to be great if Chelsea, Liverpool and the Theatre of dreams is when they fly to Manchester Utd were relegated and Spain from Manchester airport. Of Forest, Derby and the famous Sheffield course they all come up with valid Wednesday took their places, at least reasons for supporting these super today's 8 year olds might have a bit of clubs. Swanwick & Riddings Neighbourhood update

25

The summer is now in full swing and many people will be getting on their bikes and making the most of the warmer, drier weather. Unfortunately though, in the last few weeks we have noticed that quite a lot of cycles are being targeted by thieves. This is not just happening in your area, but throughout the Amber Valley and we would like to take this opportunity to remind you how to reduce the risk of your bike being stolen. Here are few things you might want to think about if you are a cyclist, or pass on if you know someone who is:  Always lock your bike no matter

where you leave it, as it would only take a matter of seconds to steal an unsecured bike, even in your shed or garage. Lock your bike to an immovable object, something your cycle couldn’t be lifted over, that couldn’t be removed, broken or cut easily. Consider investing in a ground anchor at home for your bike

 

which could attach it to a concrete wall or floor. Store your bicycles out of view from outside. Use a good quality D-lock for your bicycle, and if you think about the cost to replace your bike you’ll realise how important it is to invest in the best quality lock you can afford. To boost security further, use two locks of different types, for

  

example a D-lock and a strong chain and padlock. Keep the space between the object and the D-lock as tight as possible. Security mark your bike with a specialist forensic fluid such as SmartWater or Selecta DNA ·Register your bicycle with a national property register, such as www.bikeregister.com or www.immobilise.com.

Don’t forget to report anything you see or hear that you think could be suspicious by calling 101, the non emergency number for Derbyshire police. For more advice on crime prevention or to contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team you should also call 101.
