Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Christmas is just around the corner and of course, another new year...I wonder what resolutions I’ll have this year!!

Don’t forget to mention the Voice when you use any of the companies in this Magazine
Well one of them is something that I am currently working on now and that is to push for the local community to like and share our Facebook and twitter pages. As an added incentive, as soon as we reach 500 likes on Facebook, we will be drawing 2 winners, a reader and a business. The business will get a free full page advert in their choice of mag and the reader will receive a £50 gift voucher for any of our advertisers in any of the mags...we can’t say fairer than that for the click of a button!! Now, whilst we are on the competition trail…… QS Chapman and Chubb are offering our readers a fantastic opportunity to win not just once but TWICE! Each month, we will ask a question relating to the QS adverts in the mag and you could win from a variety of prizes from a box of luxury chocs to a high street voucher. However, at the end of the 6 month period, if you have entered every month and got the question correct, you will be entered into a further prize draw to win either a £50 voucher and bottle of Champs from Chapman & Chubb or a hamper full of goodies...your call, just answer the question below and Quality Solicitors Chapman and Chubb Competition Question: remember...you’ve got to ‘What do QS Chapman and Chubb not make a fuss out of?’ be in it to win it!!! Keep the Christmas Season Crime Free with Derbyshire Police Although it is a busy time of year, there are a few steps people should remember to help ensure they stay safe and secure:
Light up at home
If you can, use a mer switch to ensure a light comes on when you aren’t at home. Most burglaries happen when a property is empty- leaving a light on can deter burglars.
Keep all valuables Don’t make your home a target– keep your doors and windows locked and keep all your valuaout of sight: bles, including gi s, out of sight. Online shopping:
Make sure you use a secure online payment service and use credit cards rather than debit cards. Don’t give out your personal or ďŹ nancial informa on online unless you know your contact is legi mate and mark o your online transac ons against your bank statement.
Keep yourself safe:
Avoid using expensive mobile phones and other equipment in the street and if you are going out in the evening, make sure you have your keys, money, phone and plans to get home. Make sure someone knows what me you will be back.
Keep your car safe:
Make sure you park in a well lit car park and lock your car. Never leave any valuables in your car, such as mobiles or satellite naviga on systems.
Don’t drink and drive:
Drink or drug driving can be fatal. If you are going out for the evening, s ck to so drinks if you are driving. Nominate a designated driver who can get you all home safely.
Know your alcohol limits:
We want people to go out in the Amber Valley and have a safe and enjoyable evening out. An social behaviour, par cularly related to alcohol, is one of our top priori es and we will be taking ac on against those who commit it. Know your limits.
We wish you a safe and happy Christmas, and if you would like more advice, or to contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team then please call 101, the non emergency number for Derbyshire police or visit the website: www.derbyshire.police.uk.

16 This month we bring you a walk I’ve planned for quite a while and I’m really glad I eventually got around to it. Ogston reservoir is beautiful and this walk will give you the opportunity to see a number of nice views. There are a number of opportunities to let your dog run off the lead but there are a few stretches of road so take care and use pavements when possible. 4 1/2 mile circular walk around Ogston Reservoir A moderate and very scenice walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2 – 2 1/2 hours. There are some hilly sections and the terrain is varied with some uneven and muddy parts so a good pair of boots or wellies is highly recommended at this time of the year.
1. Begin in the “Fishermans Car Park off Ogston New Road. Exit the car park onto the road taking care as the pavement on the other side only runs a short way. Turn right and Continue to the end of the road and turn left onto Butter ield Lane. 2. Opposite the church take a signpost on your right for Wessington. Cross the ield and pass through a hedge. Cross this ield, turn left at a way post through a gap in a hedge then cross another ield, pass through another gap and proceed to a stile and onto the road. 3. Cross the road and directly opposite, take the stile by a gate onto a footpath. Continue along this path with hedges on either side. At the end of the hedges continue ahead to cross a ield. Pass through a hedge and cross another ield heading for a footbridge across the stream. 4. Take the left hand path after crossing the stream and follow the path alongside the d e r a e R ffe r stream on your left until you reach a O bridge. Take the steps onto Ogston Lane and continue before taking a right hand turn onto Crow Lane. 5. Carry on along the road past the houses until it brings you to a fork. Turn left here along Hurst Lane. Follow this road for a 50 FREE Messy Mutz reasonable distance as it bends round to the poop scoop bags right and then continues along the side of with every purchase of the reservoir, becoming South Hill Lane. Millers Complete Dog Food 6. At the end of this road turn left and taking with this coupon care for traf ic walk a short way along the B6014, before taking a footpath sign on your right into a wooded area. Cross a stile, keep the hedge on your right and follow the path along the side of a ield. Cross a stile by the farm and turn left to join the farm track.

At the road, cross straight over and take a footpath straight ahead. At the end of the path turn left onto Beresford Lane. Very soon on your left take a stile over a wall on your left. 8. Cross the ield, keeping the hedge on your left and at the end of the ield turn left onto Badger Lane. Walk down this road as it heads towards the reservoir. At the bottom turn right onto the B6014, using the footpath, crossing the reservoir. 9. Take the next left onto Quarry Lane. Continue along the road before taking a signposted path on your right, just after a house with a ‘Methodist Church’ sign. Follow the path alongside the hedge and then uphill and across the ield, heading for the top corner. Turn left onto a path and follow to a farm road. 10. Turn right and continue ahead, taking a footpath on your left just before reaching a building. Pass through a stile by a gate and follow the path down the side of the ield, towards the reservoir. 11. At the road turn right onto Ogston New Road. Make use of the pavement on the opposite side and follow the road as it takes you back to the car park.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. The Amber Valley Voice takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Gardeners Calendar - Nov/Dec
23
Time to give roses a bit of care before the weather sets in properly. Cut off most of the year’s growth and take out large woody stems. This will prevent wind rock which damages roots. If your roses have suffered from blackspot, remove affected stems, but also make sure you remove damaged fallen leaves from around the bush to prevent spread of the disease. Specimen or special plants grown in pots this year may be at least partly protected if you move them to a sheltered corner away from too much wind and frost. External house walls can create a warmer micro climate –especially if your garden faces south. Wrap terracotta pots in bubble wrap to avoid them cracking – you see you know there was a reason why you kept it! It may seem like hard work but if you get a nice day it’s worth working some organic matter into the soil before the real frosts start. It helps the worms do their work.

Book Review - The Bellweather Revivals by Benjamin Wood
Eden Bellwether is a brilliant, posh and We’re told the story by Oscar, a real decidedly strange young Cambridge outsider, who falls in love with Eden’s student. He has been cosseted and sister and becomes increasingly indulged by parents who, like his sister disturbed by the strangely unhealthy Iris, can’t quite decide if he’s a genius or sibling relationship. As events spiral something a little weirder. out of control the tale turns into a pretty So far as Eden himself is concerned there’s no question. His academic brilliance is obvious.
