Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Happy New Year to all the Amber Valley Voice readers and advertisers, I hope everyone had a fabulous Don’t forget to Christmas. For me, the weather didn’t do much to make mention the Voice it feel Christmassy but I’m assured that the cold snap is when you use any of coming soon….if ever there was a case where the saying ‘better late than never’ is inappropriate, this the companies in this would be it. I don’t want a cold snap now, I wanted it a Magazine month ago but alas, the weather is the weather and we just have to accept it. As the woman in the petrol station said to me the other week ‘ well, we just don’t have seasons anymore, so that’s the end of that’.

Here at Amber Valley HQ (South Normanton High Street!) we have many changes coming in 2013 and the first one being a new addition to the team. Carla is working for Amber Valley Voice on a part time basis and has already had a massive impact. She is learning quickly about all parts of the business and can currently be contacted about anything to do with the magazine. We’ll keep you up to date as more developments happen! I would like to bring your attention to some of our new advertisers who have some brilliant offers. If you are fancying a change in the home department, you could get a new bathroom and Kitchen from Kitco (pg 32) with a voucher for free fitting and then get all your tiles from Tile Town (pg 7) which is offering 20% off. Failing that, why not just move with our exclusive voucher from Home 2 Sell! (pg 13). There are many more vouchers throughout the mag, so look out for the ‘reader offer’ bubble on the applicable adverts. To advertise contact Emily on: Reader

So Christmas is over and you ate too much, drunk too much, and now feeling vaguely motivated to do something about it before the Christmas over-indulgence flab becomes a permanent feature. Your New Year resolution is to start running, because that is a quick way to lose weight…….Or – you don’t fall into that category and you have started your marathon training and just wondering how you will ever get there – injury free! The Golden Rule for both groups is avoid ‘too much too soon’ and don’t be tempted to say “I feel great, I’ll do a bit more…” . There are numerous Marathon Plans and advice on the internet (marathon-rookie.com is good) but many plans build up too quickly and don’t take some of the basics into consideration: (check with your GP if you are particularly unfit or have medical issues) Invest in good running shoes – you may need another pair already if you have exceeded 400 miles in your marathon training. Get specialist advice so the shoe fits your foot-type and running style. You are what you eat…and drink - to become a good running machine you need the right fuel – 60% complex carbs, 10% protein and 25% unsaturated fats is a good start and drink enough that your urine is pale yellow – too much caffeine will make this more of a challenge! -Plan rest days –almost every other day (if later, you begin to feel sore, ice, rest and consider a sports massage, osteopathy or physiotherapy) Only now should you be starting to run As a beginner start with 20 mins walking, 4 times a week on week 1, building up to 35 mins walk/run at week 6. Start ‘running only’ at week 7 for 20 mins each session and by week 10 you can be running 35-40 mins. If training for a marathon, you need to build

slowly up to 20 miles until 3 weeks before your event, then taper it down. Consider the surface you are running on – tarmac will give more impact and increase the chance of shin-splints but uneven ground off-road can also challenge joints and muscles. Treadmills are useful but usually easier. Stretching – Why would you nurture your muscles, then starve them of nutrients? Stretching enhances muscle pliability, allowing good blood flow (bringing nutrients into muscle fibres and removing toxic waste products). Pliable muscles act as effective shock-absorbers reducing injury and more joint freedom which can enhance your running style. Each muscle needs at least 20 seconds of stretch post exercise, ensuring it is being done correctly as different postures can alter the target muscles. And if you become injured… Take it seriously, ice, rest and get professional help early from a Osteopath, Physiotherapist, Chiropractor or experienced Sports Massage Therapist as the longer you leave it, the harder it is to treat and the less likely you are to achieve your goal. 12 Book Review Bring up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel If people know anything about Thomas Cromwell, it’s that he was the man behind Henry VIII’s multiple marriages – the ruthless manipulator who rescued the King from a childless Catherine of Aragon, orchestrated Anne Boleyn’s execution, married him to the “fat Flanders mare” Anne of Cleves. But you don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy Bring up the Bodies, the brilliant second novel in Hilary Mantel’s trilogy about Cromwell. Nor do you need to have read the first book Wolf Hall. The story stands alone and it’s a superb and sometimes terrifying description of power, which somehow makes you admire the man even as he fits up half the cast while bowing the knee to a narcissistic and sometimes petulant king. Mantel became the first ever British author to win the Man Booker prize two years running for the first two parts of this series. Bring up the Bodies refers to the call from the Tower to bring those accused of treason to trial. In this case it’s Anne Boleyn and those accused of carnal knowledge of her. We never know if she, or they, were guilty. Henry only wanted Cromwell to find a flaw in Anne, one which would make it possible for him to divorce this woman who had kept him on a string before he married her, then failed to give him the one thing he wanted – an heir. Cromwell is the cleverest man in the kingdom; but the most important thing he knows is how to keep his head on his shoulders. That Mantel can make you almost like him shows what an amazing writer she is.

Calling all you history fans with a sense of humour! 'Kings of the Cloth of Gold' - a brand new witty, family comedy costume drama - is playing in Alfreton for one night only on 2nd February 2013 at 7pm at Alfreton Grange Arts College. The year is 1520. Henry VIII of England meets Frances I of France at the most magnificent tournament ever held: the 'Field of Cloth of Gold', so-called because many pavilions were made of extravagant gold cloth. The 10 day tournament was a face-off of epic proportions; an attempt to outdo one another in displays of wealth, wit, feasting and sporting prowess.

Each king is proud, intelligent, and the epitome of chivalry but who will eventually win this battle of vanity? With Emanuel Brierley as King Frances I and Dominic Goodwin as King Henry VIII, this sparkling new comedy from Angus & Ross small touring theatre company based in north Yorkshire, reunites two actors whose humour and onstage chemistry has gained standing ovations across the national touring circuit. Live & Local helps a network of over 130 village halls and community venues in Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire area to choose and promote professional entertainment. Alfreton Business Club have been instrumental in supporting and facilitating this production in our local area. Tickets are available from Alfreton Grange Arts College 01773 832331. Full price - £8, under 16 or over 65 - £6. Or email info@alfretonbusinessclub.co.uk

Editors Choice I really wanted to let all the readers know about what a fabulous job Darren at Clean away does. We aren’t always the tidiest of people and because we have animals and are in & out most of the time, we never seemed to find the time to clean on a regular basis and it always ended up being a massive chore before anybody came round!! However, since Darren came into our lives in September, we haven’t looked back! Darren is the kindest, most generous person who is extremely conscientious and efficient at his job. No end of people ask me about the fact that he is a ‘man...doing the cleaning!’ but I always say that I don’t care if it’s Sergei the Meerkat coming in as long as they do a good job...and Darren certainly does a good job! He cleans the house top to bottom and it is always gleaming when we come home. Doing my job, I get to know a lot of people and I think Darren is absolutely fantastic...so book him now except, don’t steal my day!!!

Your Tax Questions Answered

Q. If I purchase a Land Rover Defender for use in my partnership business can I reclaim the VAT paid on the purchase? I will use the Land Rover 75% for business and 25% for private journeys. A. You first need to check that the specific model of Land Rover Defender is regarded as a commercial vehicle for VAT purposes by HMRC. You can do this by ringing the VAT helpline on 0800 010 9000. If HMRC agrees the Defender is a commercial vehicle, you can reclaim 75% of the VAT paid on the purchase, on the basis that it will be used for business purposes for 75% of its useful life. You should keep accurate mileage records of all your business journeys so you have evidence of the business use of the vehicle, in case HMRC ask you to prove the business use percentage. If the percentage of business use of the vehicle changes you may have to make an adjustment to your VAT return. Q. The Christmas feasting has taken its toll on the waistlines of everyone in our company. Can I give the workforce a boost by having the company pay for gym membership for me and all my staff? A. A company may provide sports or recreational facilities for its workforce, but unless those facilities are used mainly by current and former employees with exclusion of the general public, there will be a benefit in kind tax charge for the employees and the company. A membership for a gym open to any paying member from the general public would be taxed as a benefit for employees, the taxable value being the cost to the company of providing that membership. Q. My business has started exporting goods. I've heard I need an EORI number. What is it, and how do I get one? A. The Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) scheme started on 1 July 2009 and replaced the previous TURN system. The EORI provides a unique number for a business to quote to any Customs authority in the EU, for example when the business needs to make a customs declaration when goods arrive or depart from the EU. If your business had a number under TURN, it should automatically have been issued with an EORI number. If your business is VAT registered in the UK you need to complete form C220 to obtain an EORI number, if you are not VAT registered the form to complete is C220A. These application forms can be sent by email to turn@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk If you have a tax question contact James Boler at Smith Craven Chartered Accountants

DVD Review - Total Recall (15)

There seem to be a lot of remakes about these days. It could be because the film industry is looking for ‘safe bets’ in economically challenging times or it could be that they are lacking the imagination to make any new stories. Choose your poison because either way I think we may continue to see more in the future. The problem with remakes is that they never take a badly made film based on a good story (such as The Golden Compass) and remake the film it should have been. Instead they take a ‘classic’, which inevitably leads to ‘it will never be as good as the original’ comparisons. This distorts reality a bit, as with the original Total Recall, whilst it was a great film in terms of vision and plot, there is no denying the numerous flaws in the bad acting and creaky script. When the remake is compared to its predecessor we tend to

forget these failings as we look back with nostalgia and judge harshly all the faults we find with the new film. If it wasn’t a remake the latest version of Total Recall would be a very good Sci-fi film. The action is fast, cohesive and engrossing. The plot keeps you guessing and moves at pace, the visual effects are great and bring to life a vivid vision of a dystopian future. Colin Farrell does a decent job as the protagonist Douglas Quaid/Carl Hauser and Kate Beckinsale is as good as ever. But having said all this I prefer the original. Maybe it’s because I’m a child of the eighties? Maybe the original plot was better? Maybe Schwarzenegger is a better actor than Farrell?!? I cannot be sure as my judgement is coloured by longing for Mars and mutants and exploding heads. It seems that ultimately I was doomed to be disappointed in this film but it does not mean it isn’t worth watching so watch it and make your own mind up, however the next remake I’m going to see, you can bet the original will be a Golden Raspberry winner.

Gardeners Calendar - January If you’ve ordered bare root roses and they arrive when the ground is frozen you can heel them in by covering the roots with compost in a container in a cool frost free place until the ground is a little warmer. Poinsettias are almost a Christmas cliche, but to keep them going well into the New Year, put on a cool window ledge, not in direct sunlight and do not overwater. They are used to drought conditions so you can let them dry out slightly between watering. They are annual though – once they’re gone, they’re gone. January should be a good time for sprouts, but remember to stake them up and firm up the earth around the roots. Loose soil around at ground level can prevent them forming a really firm hard heart. Top Tip Start collecting plastic bottles for use, with the ends sliced off, as cloches for spring growing plants.

Swanwick & Riddings Safer Neighbourhood update

PC Mark Gibbs, PC Chris Anthony, PCSO Meikel Miller, PCSO Mark Rogers and PCSO Chris Bannister are the Somercotes and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. We are led by Sgt. Stacey Hamlett and our team is dedicated to targeting community concerns, keeping the area safe and reducing anti-social behaviour. We are now well into 2013, and we would like to take the opportunity in this edition of Amber Valley Voice to wish all of our residents a safe and happy New Year. Hopefully Father Christmas will have been very kind and we will now be enjoying our gifts, from laptops to tablets, cameras to mobile phones, sat-navs to music players or perhaps a new bicycle. These items would all be expensive to replace, and may even have sentimental value, so have you thought about keeping them secure? We would encourage residents to security mark their property using a forensically coded fluid such as SmartWater or Selecta DNA and to register them with a secure database such as Immobilise (www.immobilise.com). This can help police trace your valuables back to you should they be stolen and recovered. Even marking them with your postcode with a UV pen could help officers, but also will go a long way to deterring an opportunist thief from stealing your property. We would also ask that you never leave your valuables on show, don’t leave them on view at home from the outside and if you take them in the car always make sure you take them with you. Following these points can really help you reduce the risk of having your belongings stolen by an opportunist thief. If you would like any more crime prevention advice, you can contact us by calling 101, the nonemergency number for Derbyshire police, email alfreton.neighbourhoods@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk or visit www.derbyshire.police.uk for more information.

In case you missed the news during 2012 ...why not have a read of our very own controversial Gary who gives you the headlines of 2012, not before he has a bit of a rant about diets and exercise! If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact either Emily on info@ambervalley voice.co.uk or 01773 604178/ 07891 639638 or Carla on Carla@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk, 07896294512.

It being January, Carla asked me to write about diets, but thinking about it, I don't want to offend any of my fat friends, (you know who you are) so it's best that I leave it. I can give some advice though, to those who've piled on the flab over Christmas. Walk more and eat less, it really works, no need to staple your stomach or join a gym. For the sake of your loved ones do not try the cabbage soup or that Atkins all meat diet, you'll soon discover that you lose more friends than pounds.

Our Jimmy, Yorkshireman and ex-collier, who'd have thought it. Throughout this saga I've heard a number of people ask why these women didn't come forward when he was alive. Well some girls did, but were not taken seriously enough by the police. Jimmy Saville was often pictured in the company of Prime Ministers and Royalty, a 'player' in the establishment, he was feted for charity fund raising, and so who was going to believe an impressionable teenage girl's accusation against such a man? It all leaves a thought that someone, somewhere in a position of Have you ever seen any cave paintings of a authority, did have knowledge or at least an fat bloke chasing a woolly mammoth or a size inkling of what he was up to, but did nothing 16 toga on a statue of Helen of Troy?
