Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Well, we had some beautiful weather at the start of the month, so roll on the next instalment! There is lots going on in this edition of AVV. Don’t forget to mention the Voice when you use any of the companies in this Magazine

There are some new ‘things to do’ including the child reach charity gig which looks like it’ll be a great night. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all our new advertisers too but we’ve also got some of the usual suspects in this month, namely our Gary….who is considerably less controversial this month but continues to walk the line expertly between cheeky and outrageous! I personally love it...I can only equate the monthly e-mail unveiling to what I imagine it would be like to walk through a car wash …a plethora of emotions during but always refreshing upon reflection!! We had a sad report from last months dog walk from a reader that had come across some loose dogs which caused them to have an accident. Therefore, please take care when doing any of the dog walks, there will always be dangers that we cannot legislate for, so please do take care. Finally, if you would like to submit anything to the magazine, questions, dog walks, articles, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are always open to new ideas and we want to keep the content, fresh, local and readable...so please keep the ideas flowing!!

It’s always nice to come into the salon and have a good manicure so that you can check the health of your nails and select suitable treatment products, keep cuticles in good order and also get advice on suitable shades that are both in fashion and suit your skin colour. Between times it is also very relaxing to be able to give yourself a manicure. This can be a calm, stress free bit of me time, if you have a simple guide to help. Get all your products and tools together, put on some music you enjoy, a nice cup of tea and off you go:

nail polish remover on a small swab of cotton wool. Press and pass it over the entire nail. Move gently from the base of the nail to the tip, until all the nail polish has been removed. Using an emery board, shape the nail, filing away from the corner of the nail to the center on both sides. Soak your hands in warm, soapy water for a few minutes to remove all dirt. You might like to add a little oil to the water to soften your cuticles. Now, clean under the edges of your nails with an orangewood stick. Gently push the cuticles back with a clean orange stick covered in cotton wool. If time permits, gently polish your nails with the three way buffer using first pink, then white, then the grey surfaces.

Apply one coat of topcoat. Once this has dried a little, apply cuticle oil to promote soft cuticles and a great shine. Allow at least an hour to make sure your nails are fully dry - unless you use Vinylux – your nails will be dry in eight and a half minutes!

Swanwick & Riddings Neighbourhood update

11

Your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team is reminding residents to be security conscious over the summer months. Police have also noticed that the number of house burglaries tends to rise during the summer months as opportunistic thieves take advantage of people who leave their homes insecure while in the garden or in another part of the house. They are asking people to help reduce the opportunities for a thief to sneak into homes and officers will be holding crime prevention events throughout the summer months. Summer time security tips include:  Making sure doors and windows are locked.

 Not leaving car keys or ID documents near doors, letterbox or windows.

 Keeping windows are closed at night time, even when you are in bed and investing in window locks for ground floor windows

 Security marking any valuables and registering them. You should also record any serial numbers.

 Keeping any side or rear garden gates locked at all times.

 Tiding away any garden tools after using them and always keeping sheds and outbuildings locked.

 Installing an alarm and security lights around your home to help deter burglars.

Remember that while we do live in a safe place, and the number of burglaries has fallen over the last 10 years, that taking a few moments to prevent your home being at risk could protect you from suffering the distress of someone stealing from your home. 12 This month we have a lovely walk with some excellent views of the Amber Valley. As usual there will be plenty of chances to let your dog off the lead but take care on roads and around livestock. This month we had a request for a disabled access walk, so if you know of any please get in touch. Book Review - The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald 15 If you haven’t seen the movie of The Great Gatsby (or even if you have), it’s worth taking a look at F Scott Fitzgerald’s original book, to see what all the fuss was about. It’s been described as the Great American Novel and it may well be somewhere in the running – certainly it vividly recreates an almost mythical world which is beyond most people’s memory – the Jazz Age of flappers, wild parties on Long Island, excess and decadence. The story of millionaire Jay Gatsby and his love affair with the shallow, self absorbed Daisy Buchanan is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young man who comes into their rich, pampered circle - so we always get an outsider’s view of the

American dream. The narrative is a strong one – it’s a good read; but the real strength in the book is the atmosphere and a growing sense of the emptiness of wealthy America – at least in that period, but maybe there’s echoes of it in the canyons of today’s celeb-land. The book is one which has grown in stature since its publication in 1925 – in the first year it sold only 20,000 copies and had very mixed reviews. One thing we should be grateful for - Fitzgerald changed the name of the book before it was published. Originally it was going to be called Trimalchio in West Egg. – can’t see that becoming a blockbuster movie...

This month Gary is back to being his noncontroversial self discussing the finer points of the modern menace…….

A modern menace in City centres has to be the phenomenon of 'chugging'. It's usually young fun bunnies jumping up and down in front of you asking if you're having a great day and could you spare a few minutes to answer a few questions. Well, 'no I haven't so leave me alone for God's sake'. It's virtually impossible to walk through a town without some clown shaking a bucket at you and pretending to be the long lost best friend that you never really liked that much anyway.

shocked at the number of people who gave him the change from their quid. As I got to the front of the queue I'd counted, and he'd collected over £5 in less than ten minutes, £30 an hour back then was a Banker's wage, so he was on a good screw. He got nowt of me of course. A few weeks later the fare went up to a £1 and I had to giggle and comment on his misfortune, he was a broken man.

Every time someone comes up to me and asks me to lend them a fag I ask them when they're going to let me have it back, I think I actually prefer the Professional my ears sting with the foul language that beggar, I travel by train so I've come comes my way, but there you go. There across more than one in my life. As I was a man at Nottingham station who walked from work to Sheffield railway told me he was 57p short for his fare station the other evening having byhome and could I help him out, I told him passed the chuggers , the Sky salesman that he wasn't very good at this as he'd and the worst busker in Britain, I was asked for exactly the same amount the enticed into conversation by a drunk day before, 'You'd have been home by who said to me 'I'm going to be honest now if you'd walked it' I said, adding that with you, can you lend me 50p for a can he was letting himself down by not of cider', whilst I appreciated this new collecting a single penny in the preceding approach I declined to give him anything. 24 hours. He gave me that look that Tot What it did do was bring back memories Pilgrim and Rob Travis give me at 5-a of some of my favourite begging side when I've nutmegged them, the one techniques, years ago I lived near Brixton that says 'I want to pull your kidneys out, and used to catch the tube to work, the through your throat'. fare to zone 1 was 90p and there was a Finally a note to my old mate Steve Boot, bloke stood near the ticket machine did that tarmac chap ever get in touch? asking for a spare ten pence, I was If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact either Emily on info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or 01773 604178/ 07891 639638 or Carla on Carla@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk, 07896294512.

Gardeners Calendar - June

We’ve got summer – the season’s officially here! No matter what the weather, the amount of light means everything in the garden is going mad – and this year it all seems to be happening together. If you’ve got gaps in flower beds it’s not too late to plant fast growers such as calendula and nigella. Hellebore seed can be gathered – split ripe seedheads and plant immediately – after a cold winter they’ll burst into life – but they’ll almost certainly turn out a different colour to the parent plant. Cut oriental poppies back to ground level after flowering. This encourages new growth – and possibly new flowers and creates space in borders. You can also take out flowering heads of euphorbia once they’ve flowered – cut back to the ground – to prevent mildew.

Top Tip

This is a good time for pinching out to get better growth – both tomatoes and plants such as chrysanths and even surfinias and begonias benefit. It means you have a bit less flower immediately but a much bushier and more heavily flowering plant as the summer progresses.
