The Somercotes and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team includes Sgt. Simon Street, PC Chris Anthony, PCSO Chris Bannister, PCSO Richard Plant, PCSO Mark Rogers and PCSO Meikel Miller. They cover Swanwick, Somercotes, Leabrooks, Pye Bridge, Riddings and Ironville and work in partnership with other agencies to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and resolve any community concerns or issues. Every three months the team hold a meeting to offer local residents the chance to help set priorities for the area. The last meeting was held in January and it was decided officers would target:

Speeding on the main road through Somercotes and Swanwick. The team will be working with local residents to raise awareness of traffic speeds. Traffic will be monitored with the speed radar gun and spot checks will be carried out, with enforcement where appropriate. Nuisance and off road motorbikes on the South Spire housing estate, Somercotes. Increased police patrols will take place, and officers will to speak to and advise riders about the issue and the law. Section 59 warnings will be issued where necessary and motorbikes will be seized from persistent offenders. Residents are encouraged to let us know about any information or incidents so that we can take positive action to help resolve this problem. The team will be announcing the date of the next meeting shortly, when these priorities will be reviewed. Keep an eye out on the Derbyshire police website, www.derbyshire.police.uk for more information. In the meantime, if you have any concerns about crime, safety or anti-social behaviour then you can contact the team by calling 101, or emailing alfreton.neighbourhoods@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk. If you are on Twitter, then why not follow your local team for updates and information in your neighbourhood? PCSO Meikel Miller looks after the Riddings and Ironville feed, search @RiddingsSNT, or check out PCSO Richard Plant for Somercotes, @SomercotesSNT.

16 The recent soggy weather has tested the fortitude of even the most hardy walkers. Personally I prefer my walking boots to a pair of wellies but it seems these days I will need a pair of waders! Hopefully this walk will keep the mud levels low but if your dog is anything like ours this won’t matter a jot! Hope you enjoy it. If so why not let us know... 5 mile circular walk from Doe Hill Country park via Tibshelf A moderate and varied walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2 – 2 1/2 hours. The route is fairly flat with some short inclines. The terrain is mostly on well laid trails but there are a few muddy and uneven sections so a good pair of boots or wellies is highly recommended, especially at this time of the year.

1. Park at Doehill Country park on Doe Hill Lane between Stonebroom and Tibshelf. From the car park take the path by the information sign. 2. Follow this path as it winds around until it joins with another path from the right, then take the next left, almost immediately. Follow this path again as it winds until it joins with another path from the right and again take the next left, almost immediately. Follow this path until it brings you to Alfreton Road. 3. Cross the road and take the wide track (Gloves Lane) after a metal barrier on the other side. Follow this track for approximately 100 meters before taking the second of two paths on your left (the Silverhill Trail. 4. Continue along the trail until you meet a sign on your right. Take the horse stile on your left towards the ‘Five Pits Trail’. Follow this path until you meet a cross roads, taking the first path on your der right. (This route can be fairly muddy. If a e R ffer you are keen to avoid this, you can O continue ahead here on the Five Pits Trail to take you to point 7.) 5. Follow this path until it joins Saw pit lane, bearing left. After another 200 meters take a path on your left signposted Tibshelf ½ 50 FREE Messy Mutz mile. Follow the path as it joins Wetton Lane and follow until you reach the main poop scoop bags road (B6014). with every purchase of 6. Turn left here and cross the road at the Millers Complete Dog Food crossing before joining the five pits trail with this coupon directly ahead. Keep to the main path downhill to a cross roads. Take the second track on your left. There is a public footpath sign and the track is Church Lane.

1. After approximately 30 meters you will meet a T-junction. Head left then immediately right following a grass path and pass over a stile by a gate. After the gate keep ahead to walk alongside a field with the housing on your left. 2. Follow this path through two fields before joining a hedge lined path at the corner of the second field via a kissing gate. At the end of this path you will meet a T-junction. Take the hedge lined path on your right (not into the field). 3. Continue ahead on the path with the hedge on your left through 3 fields until it brings you out onto Doe Hill Lane. 4. Turn right here and follow Doe hill Lane pack to Doe hill Country park. Where appropriate cross the road to make use of the footpaths available This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Book Review - Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

Do you ever think about the way your life might have been different if one thing had changed? Small things like deciding not to go to a party where you met your future partner, being sneezed on by someone who gave you flu so you missed the job interview which would have meant you living in a different part of the country with different friends who introduced you to other people who... – the possibilities are endless once you start.... Kate Atkinson’s Life after Life, winner of the 2014 Costa Novel, explores the notion of how our lives, which seem so solid to us, could change in a second because of seemingly unimportant things. Ursula Todd’s life begins several times. Things happen to her or don’t and they

change the course of her life and other people’s lives. Sometimes there are echoes of something which she can’t quite get hold of, which influence what she does. So it’s one person’s life, in different incarnations, with the characters around her featuring in different ways. It may sound complicated but Atkinson writes in such a direct way that you catch on to the style very quickly. It’s a clever idea and the style of writing, if you’ve been used to Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie detective novels is very different, although her warmth and understanding of what makes people tick is still very much in evidence. Interesting and intriguing and thought provoking.

Gardeners Calendar - March

It may have been a dismal winter but for even the most pessimistic gardener, Spring is on the way – more light and even slightly warmer days mean growth. Hellebores and snowdrops will either be coming to an end soon or already be finished. Divide snowdrops while the green leaves are still strong to create next year’s new clumps and divide hellebores once they’ve finished flowering. Hellebores will also self-seed like mad, so keep an eye out for seedlings which you can re-plant for next year. Top dress containers – even replacing the top few inches of compost can make a terrific difference to the amount of nutrition a plant gets. Put supports in now for fast growing perennials, once they’ve started shooting up it’s a lot harder to train them. Try using flexible bush off-cuts if you’re looking for an alternative to expensive plant supports, or threading string through upright sticks.

Top Tip If your garden has been really waterlogged this winter, try and avoid walking on the grass, a plank laid across the grass to get to flowerbeds would be better than trampling it down as it takes a long time for it to recover if damaged so early.

All your Will questions answered

What happens if I don’t have a LPA?

Wills - Probate Powers Of Attorney What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows some else to manage the financial affairs of another person. It gives someone you trust the power to act on your behalf. It can be used when the person has full mental capacity and can continue to operate after the donor has lost mental capacity. You can decide exactly how much authority your ‘Attorney’ would have and whether you want to impose any restrictions.

If you do not make a LPA those who wish to assist you will need to apply to the Court of Protection in order to act on your behalf. The Court of Protection will consider the facts before it and decide on what is in your best interests and may appoint a deputy to act on your behalf. Dealing with your financial affairs would be virtually impossible without someone authorised to act on your behalf, relatives can face long delays, expense and distress if they have to go through the Court of Protection to be permitted to do so.

How much will a Lasting Power of Attorney cost? Single Lasting Power of Attorney (a single document for a single person) £275 Mirror Lasting Powers of Attorney (two documents drafted as a ‘matched pair’ for a couple) £500. However, a LPA can be carried out at the same time as your Will, which has an overall saving as opposed to doing them separately.

Who Should I Appoint? When appointing attorneys you can appoint family or friends but it needs to be people you can trust. However if you have substantial assets or a complicated portfolio of assets then you may wish to appoint a professional attorney, for example an accountant or a lawyer.

This months whirlwind of optimism takes us from holes in the road to Michael Gove. If you can’t restrain your excitement anymore please read away!

Who is responsible for the state of our roads and pavements? Is it the Parish council or is it the Borough lot? Admittedly we’ve had a bit of rain, but I’ve just walked the dogs past the butcher’s on Derby road and one of my dogs has had to swim to the traffic lights. Who the hell laid that tarmac? A one legged blind man on ganja? It’s like a miniature Pennine way. I looked into one of the deeper ravines and found a dead haddock, a pedalo and a rubber ring. If you dare ride a bike down The Green its best to have wide tyres or a big backside, go down more than twice and you’re in danger of developing arthritis.

universities. More tests, more homework, opening schools for 10 hours a day. When will it end? We’ll be giving 2 year olds numeracy tests before too long. I firmly believe that ‘young adults’ or ‘students’ do not seem to be as ready for the real world as they were years ago, but it’s not their fault, they can only pass what’s put in front of them. Then again, most 16 year olds don’t know what 7 x 8 is but they do know that ‘it’s never their fault’.

The junction of The Green and Broadway should have Kate Adie reporting from it, there are that many craters in the road. We pay enough council tax don’t we? We might be better off opening some of the pavements around here as an urban alternative to Alton towers. Can someone please just fix it.

Government seems to enjoy tampering with education, whichever party gets in they seem to treat it as a plaything, a pet project. Isn’t it about time that they got it right and then left it alone for a bit. Anyway that Mr Gove, he looks a bit creepy to me, I don’t think I’d want him around my kids, he’d be much better off stood in a garden with a fishing rod. I think I’ve just lost any admiration I had for him.

From one rant to another, does anyone like that Mr Gove chap, he’s the Education Minister and seems hell bent on upsetting everybody he comes across, it takes a special talent to be as unpopular as he most certainly is. I have a sneaking admiration for him, he just doesn’t seem to care about slagging off our kids, teachers, dinner ladies,

Finally, we’ve just got back from our annual rugby trip, we go every year. I have a few tales to tell, none of which I can divulge here. If, however, you get waxed or have your hair done at Avant Garde then ask Steve about his run in with the Mafia, or if you’re in the Gate, ask Gary the landlord for a rendition of ‘Suspicious minds’.
