Welcome to Amber Valley Voice

3

Party season has begun, we have all the local Don’t forget to fireworks displays (I believe that Carla is attending Bob & Shirley’s annual Firework Extravaganza but mention the Voice this is by invitation only and alas, mine must be in when you use any of the post!!) However, I always really enjoy the the companies in this Swanwick FC display, it truly is a fantastically Magazine organised event and you can’t beat mushy peas and mint sauce!! We also have the beginnings of Christmas Fayre season and again, I always attend Leabrooks Gallery because it is just fab for those bespoke, personal gifts that you just can’t get on the high street. Another thing to note this month is the help from Sam, who is a good friend of ours at Amber Valley Media….she ever so reluctantly agreed to have her nails done at Blooming Nails in South Normanton but as you can see from the before and after pics, she is pretty ecstatic at the result (pg 22)!! She keeps popping into the office and waving her hands at me...topically, I am as green as the wicked witch of the west when I see them!! Finally, I have heard on the grapevine that some people didn’t get the ‘joke’ in Gary’s article last month. I personally received a telling off from my auntie but it is his column and I’m just glad that To advertise contact Emily on: so many of you respond to it. 01773 604178

Editors Choice Yet another glowing report for Safeway Electrical! My Mum and Dad had them over to fix their washer/ dryer and oven fan this month. This is what they had to say: I called them up and explained the problem, giving them with the make and model number and they booked an appointment for Monday between 7&9am. At 8:15am, they arrived and were able to verify the problem immediately and replace with the part they had pre-ordered. They were so fast and efficient at a reasonable cost, that we will be calling them again with any appliance problems. To Advertise please call Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638

Advice on rogue traders and preventing doorstep crime by Derbyshire Police Police throughout the Amber Valley and across Derbyshire are raising awareness of doorstep crime and rogue traders, and how to help protect yourself or your friends, neighbours and relatives.

Doorstep crime is more likely to affect elderly or vulnerable residents, with offenders taking advantage of their good or trusting nature. While most callers at your home will be genuine, and doorstep crime does not happen regularly, we just want to remind people to be cautious at the door and to report any suspicious activity to the police.

Doorstep crime can refer to: Rogue Traders A rogue trader will cold call at homes to say they have noticed some repairs or gardening work needs doing urgently, and then offer to carry out the work. They may also say they have materials left over from an earlier job. While they may negotiate what might seem a reasonable price initially, they will often hike up the fee once the job has been completed or demand more cash to buy materials. Always get a second opinion before agreeing to work; go to a reputable company or someone a neighbour can recommend. Why not use Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Trader Scheme? Call the council on 08456 058 058 and %ind local traders who agree to do a good job at a fair price.

Bogus Callers A bogus caller will be someone who calls at your home unannounced, and claim to be an of%icial or working for a company. They may say they are from the water, gas or electricity board; that they work for the council, in health or social services, or could even claim to be a police of%icer. They will usually give a reason or an excuse as to why they need to go inside your home, or may want you to step outside with them. They might also try to keep you talking. They will be looking to distract a homeowner to make it easier for them to steal cash, and could work in pairs.

Pedlars These are people who call at your home offering to sell household goods or cleaning products they are carrying with them. By law a pedlar must carry a pedlar’s certi%icate, which is issued by the police. Always ask to see their certi%icate. The best advice to reduce doorstep crime is ‘Not Sure? Don’t open the door’. If you don’t know who is at the door, then don’t feel you have to open it. If you do, always make sure any other doors and windows are closed %irst and use the door chain. Always ask to see the caller’s ID and check that they are legitimate by calling the company on a number from the telephone directory or a bill. Genuine callers won’t mind and will understand how important it is for you to feel safe. If you have any concerns about a doorstep caller, either at your own home or a neighbours, contact Derbyshire police on 101 so that of%icers can check everything is in order. If it is an emergency, or a crime is being committed, the number to dial is always 999. Don’t forget to mention the Amber Valley Voice when responding to Ads

Book Review - Merivel, a Man of His Time by Rose Tremain 19 There are many kinds of historical novel, romps. There are plenty of dark moments from the bodice ripper to the thriller, plus among the exuberance and wit; Merivel has serious pieces of writing such as Hilary some pretty questionable morals at times, Mantel’s Man Booker Prize winners. plus a great capacity for attracting (and often overcoming) disaster of every kind. Merivel, a Man of His Time by Rose He’s a paradoxical human being, not a Tremain, takes a different route – hero and his tolerance of human the story of a physician and courtier frailty, not just his own, is an who owes his place in the world underlying mood of both books. He’s purely to his ability to amuse King the court jester who can not only Charles II, known as the Merry break his own heart, but ours too. Monarch thanks to the hedonism of his court.

You also get lots of insights into the society of the time; alongside the Merivel is an immensely %lawed ridiculous excess there is the squalor human being, but also one who is behind the glitter at the Versailles court; or a hugely good hearted, joyful and likeable. He was %irst introduced in Tremain’s novel crash course into what they did before anRestoration, and while you don’t need to aesthetics, (you might want to hide behind have read the %irst book to enjoy the second, the sofa during that bit). they are both worth the time spent on them.

Gardeners Calendar - October It almost goes without saying that October is the time to be watching for &irst frosts – bring in geraniums and fuchsias if you want to preserve them for next year – if you prune them they can sit on a windowsill, or take cuttings to give yourself a bit more indoor space. Cut back perennials which have &inished &lowering and if they’ve developed bald patches in the middle of a clump, lift the rootball with a fork and divide by teasing roots apart. Replant the strong growth from the outside of the clump and discard the weakest bits to the compost heap. Prune suckers, which will weaken growth away from the base of ornamental trees such as acers. Top Tip

Spring bulbs should be going in about now. Rule of thumb is to plant them two and a half times their own depth.

Ok, so last month some readers didn’t take my advice about taking what Gary says with a pinch of salt! This month’s article reiterates this point with Grumble Guts lurching from HS2 to Princess Diana. It also took Carla to point out the ‘joke’ at the end...whoever said that old ones are the best wasn’t talking about that particular ‘classic’!!

Posh boys and their train sets, that's what I think of the HS2 project. At last we seem to be getting a few politicians who are seeing through the folly of wasting so much money on taking a few minutes off a rail journey from London to Birmingham and beyond.

The reality is that the transport links built out of London actually suck and import more people and jobs into the capital, rather than the other way around. The rest of the country doesn't need to create jobs, we just need the Government and big business to re-locate some of their existing work to the other cities of the UK, and I don't just mean a couple of call centres. It's so simple, just grasp the old nettle and get on with it.

I've asked myself the question again and again, how is a faster train going to bring economic improvement to the midlands and north? There'll be a few rail jobs created, plenty of building work during the project Am I the only person in the land who thinks that Princess Diana had a nasty accident in and millions of pounds paid out to Paris and died in a car crash? I don't believe consultants. The trouble is that those consultants are all based where? Not in that the SAS had her assassinated because Derby or Doncaster that is for sure. Liz didn't want her cavorting with an Arab, I also %ind it hard to believe that her driver The main argument is that it will increase capacity, but there is an easy answer to that, was pissed or that an alien appeared in front pay for more carriages and increase the of the car on its way to Euro-Disney to make passenger numbers, it seems so easy. Next a crop circle. I'm no Royalist and to be time you catch a train to London or get on honest I thought she was a bit of a loony the Penzance to Scotland train that runs tune, but please, please Daily Mail, let her rest in peace. through Birmingham, Derby and Chester%ield have a look how many carriages I've been to a couple of Alfreton Town the train has, it's usually 5, but years ago I'm matches recently and have to say that the sure there were 7 or 8. I’m just thinking that standard of football is exceptional, get for 50 billion spondoolies, adding extra yourselves down there if you get the chance, carriages, building fast links across the you will be pleasantly surprised. Pennines and constructing a few thousand I also went to PC World last week, crikey houses might give a bigger boost to the you have to be careful what you say in there. economy than Osborne's pet project.
