Individual Work

Location: Philadelphia, PA

From the outside, the building is a combination of basic geometries, a new iteration of the elemental figures. We can still see the rectangles and circles, but they are all broken down into fragments and happen on dierent layers. In each layer, there are new combinations of the basic shapes. We have to see the building as a whole to get the full readings. In terms of the overall massing, rectangular and circular solids go on various directions. They link and interweave with each other smoothly to form a collective whole. The elemental shapes, together with the weight of brick, link back to the past, provide a feeling of solidity and formality and then evoke a sense of monumentality.

History, and similarly monumentality, follow the same logic. Pure geometries, such as the square, the triangle, and the circle draw their original narratives from models including the Parthenon, Pantheon, and Pyramids. In order to generate new understandings, we must break with past associations. Through fragmenting and splintering elemental figures, we allow the interweaving of contemporary narratives.

Starting from elemental shapes, rectangles and circles, this project explores formal devices of fragmentation and interweaving to include and bring together multiple dierent forms. New shapes are created by splintering and then combining the basic shapes. These shapes generated new spaces, either void or solid. The exterior and interior can be totally different.

Inside the building, people encounter surprising spaces when walking around, as create new interior spaces are created when solid pieces wrap and lock. The solids interweave with each other and develop various internal atrium and courtyard on dierent levels. People can travel across dierent levels through them. They not only bring nature inside, but also allow connection and interaction to occur in the building.

An element must first be splintered, before it can be woven back together.

Usage: Business Office

Location: Montreal, QC

This building offers shared workspaces to all sizes of companies, ranging from startups to enterprises. Various sizes of private offices formed by 5m-side-length cubes are linked through internal terraces. The terraces function as communal spaces and circulation. They consist of working tables and relaxing areas, encouraging both professional discussions and casual socialization. Big companies rent private offices depending on their needs. Startups can cut off expenditures by renting a few tables in the communal areas and utilizing the shared tables.

The stairs and bridges allow occupants to move freely around the building. To create a spontaneous circulation, this building motivates communication among the occupants. What’s more, it contributes to the interaction between people and the building. Dumb Box is thus a refreshing building that everyone can have their own routes.

Facades & Walls

The facades and walls both consist of white solid panel, transluscent, and transparent glass. The combination of diverse transparencies not only gives sophisticated impressions on depth, but also allows the the building apparence to trans form between day and night.

Team: Y. Hong, K. Wang, J. Cheng

Pool+ is an aquatic center supplemented with a community center. It attracts not only the communities nearby but also the people from greater Montreal, which will contribute to the gentrification of the area. The building contains a 50m sports pool, a leisure pool, an all-purpose ballroom, a cafe, and a small community library.

However beautiful the location is, the riverside is mainly industrial and lacks a pedestrian-friendly way to approach the site. Subsequently, not many people from the main residential area on the other side of the canal can conveniently access this area. Pool+ therefore also involves a bridge connecting both sides of the canal, providing easy access for non-motor passengers to the building.

Nature is fading away because of the fast expansion of urban cities. Agritecture contributes to a balance between nature and urban cities by implementing hydroponic farming in the apartment complex. It not only promotes the city life welfare for its occupants but also brings in a new lifestyle with agriculture as a daily life routine.

Ground Floor & The Farm

The ground floor is all about the farm. The supermarket sells fruits and vegetables which are freshly picked from the farm. The farm-to-table restaurant uses products from the farm as well and prepares some food to sell in the supermarket. The customers can go to the farm and pick their food personally. Besides, the workshop produces herbal essence and other relating products. It can cooperate with the nearby hospital for certain herbal treatments.

Concentricity

Form Logic Exploration, 2017

Team: Peter Recht

In this project, we focused on an ornament in Station Georges-Vanier. We identified its systemic rules by geometrical observations and established basic geometrical logic. With these logics in mind, we created a new parametric object. From the original mesh of the ornament, we derived a theory of branching and concentricity. There are two main parameters that were mathematically related. They empowers the object to acquire multiple variations of the object.
