Polo was a fixture of the ancient Chinese and Mongolian Cavalry of Genghis Khan, and in the 1850’s, Polo was also very popular in India. Polo embarked upon the United States via New York City in 1876, and became an official Olympic sport in the 1920’s. Polo would later emerge as a national sport in the early 1930’s. This year marks 25 years of Polo in San Diego. About Polo Etiquette Although etiquette is the “buz word” most associated with the game of Polo, it’s casual & stylish fashion’s are just as recognizable when attending those beautiful outdoor matches. Most associate polo with the rich and famous. A sport reserved for only royality. Polo matches in stereotypical movies propose first impressions as snobbish, unfriendly and aristrocatic. Nothing could be further from the truth. Like any other American sporting event, polo is robust, fans are competitive and love to cheer for their favorite team and camaraderie is encouraged the moment you enter the lush green fields. Polo goers are some of the trendyish FANS in the world! When you arrive to the San Diego polo match you are entertained with vibrant earth colors and smart styles. Although polo tends to be a bit dressier than other outdoor sporting events, the attire can range from blazers and suits for men; jeans to smartly tailored trousers, sundresses or skirts for women. However, the wardrobe will be more formal if the game is a major charity event, tournament or championship game. Sounds like the typical Los Angeles Laker game to me, but I must warn you that at some point you will be walking on grass and the appropriate ‘kicks’ are encouraged.
For ladies, flats and/or wedged sandals are recommended especially since you will not want your two hundred and fifty dollar Pradas sinking into the grass! You will understand why later. Polo, unlike most spectator sports, encourages family participation. You can bring your small children, and range your seating from blankets and lawn chairs to membership seating field-wide, or at tables which can be reserved for the day or the entire season. Just keep in mind that a polo field is nine times the size of a standard American football field, so everywhere has a great view with or without binoculars. One of the most festive moments happens during halftime when the tradition of Divot stomping begins. Divot stomping is polo’s long time tradition where spectators are prompted to walk out onto the field and literally stomp down the turf that’s been torn up by the pony’s hooves (Which is why the womens recommended foot-apparel is wedged heels or flats). Mean while smooth jazz is heard on the loudspeaker in the background. This festive moment is always paired with a glass of fine champagne and is usually referred to as the Champagne Divot Stomp. The fans interactions are always encouraged and appreciated, so don’t forget to bring your enthusiasm. Another interesting aspect of the game itself is, unlike football or basketball where teams switch sides at half time, the polo team switch after each goal ! Imagine doing that after each touch down in football or each basket in basketball!

“COMEDY SPOTLIGHT” The Comedy Perspective
the so called Urban style of standup comedy jumped into the world much like hip hop did-with some help from a hip hop legend and it took the game to the stratosphere of the entertainment world. Now for a long time, stand-up comedians had a major influence on the world or television and movies, from the likes of Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx. Fast-forward to the the turn of the century and we have three black stand-ups getting Oscar nominations, and two taking them home: Jamie Foxx, and Monique, Eddie was robbed y’all! I can recall when I was a kid back in the days watching the likes of Pryor, Cosby, and Redd in the theaters and on TV. I remember not knowing that Bill Cosby was a comic because he was starring in an action drama I Spy. Which has to be the first time an AfricanAmerican comedian was casted in a serious role on TV. Still the influence of stand-up comics was starting to make its move on the TV world, white and black. In the mid to late 70’s you had Gabe Kaplan starring in Welcome Back Kotter, Robin Williams in Mork and Mindy to name a few. Then we The Stand-Up Comedy Phenomenon had our own start to shine as well. by Marc Howard Along with Cosby, there was Jimmy Walker co-starring in Good Times Human emotions are a maNow let me introduce myself for where he became a household name jor part of who we are. I’ve seen this comedy world birth to a young 18 year old phethat because of this gift that go through a big renaissance and nom from Long Island, NY named God gave to us is why the world move into a higher realm of the Eddie Murphy who came on the of comedy exist and will forentertainment spectrum, espescene starring in the late night ever be an indelible part of our cially from the African-American sketch comedy hit show Saturday society. aspect of entertainment. Much of Night Live.
I can recall being a kid who enjoyed SNL with the original cast, then being upset when I found out that they changed to a whole new cast, but since there wasn’t a billion channels like today I had no choice but to give it a shot, after that it seemed like every Monday at school my friends and I would spend that first day back from the weekend talking about a skit that Eddie Murphy did. It was truly history in the making for seeing blacks in comedy on TV, and it’s effect on a cross culture of society Now, while Richard Pryor was making Stand-up comedy movies that were selling out in movie theaters-where me and my other under aged friends would sneak in to watch. He really broke ground in the comedy field that has yet to be duplicated. He became the yardstick to which every stand-up is measured by. Eddie Murphy then took the baton from Pryor and as they say took the comedy game to rock star status. Eddie Murphy from 1985 through 1990 was the biggest box office draws in Hollywood, over the likes of Stallone, Willis, and Schwarzenegger. Eddie’s success helped to launch the careers of Chris Rock, and Arsenio Hall. What he did for the image of stand up was show that a black stand-up could reach a cross section of society, and be safe to work with. Pryor stated in his autobiography how Hollywood “was scared to deal with him”. Arsenio Hall was able to become the first AfricanAmerican with his own late night talk show, The Arsenio Hall Show. It ran from 1989-1994. It was the first to give more black performers the opportunity to be seen in this forum.
Opportunities that were not given nearly as much on late night shows like Johnny Carson’s, Jay Leno’s, or David Letterman’s. Arsenio held it down while being a syndicated show, unlike Letterman on NBC then to CBS, and Carson and Leno who were on NBC. Being on a network like CBS and NBC made for a stronger foundation for sponsorship and audience ratings, things that give any television show life. Hall should be commended on his 6 year run where he eventually got ousted for “low ratings”, but we all really know why. He also used his platform for up and coming black stand-up comics to perform and get (notoriety) Like many mainstream comedians would get on Letterman and Carson. Since Halls departure from the late night show, hollywood has made a few attempts to reproduce another predominately black late night talk show.
Basically what he did was not only ground breaking, but now seems impossible to duplicate. During the late 80’s Robert Townsend was able to come on the scene with his own comedy show that had sketch performances, music acts and featured some unknown, but soon to be great stand-up comics, i.e. Robin Harris, Tommy Davidson, and the elder Wayans siblings, Keenan Ivory, Damon, and Kim. It featured many other African-American comics who were headliners in the comedy clubs all over the country. As we moved into the 90’s Russell Simmons who had made Def Jam Records the Motown of Hip Hop music, stepped into the comedy arena and produced the hit standup show Def Comedy Jam, it was hosted by Martin Lawrence who was on the way up to becoming a star. This showed there was not only plenty of black headlining comedians, but there was a place for a whole separate genre of stand-up comedy. From this beginning genre we saw the careers of Bernie Mac, Eddie Griffin, Bill Bellamy, Steve Harvey, Cedric The Entertainer, and D.L. Hugley blossom from this cultural phenomenon becoming household names in Hollywood. It was what the black community was starving for, and what all of America was missing and didn’t know it. In this time period there were only 2 AfricanAmerican owned comedy clubs in existence. L.A. had the Comedy Act Theater where Robin Harris made his brand of clowning the audience, and his legendary bit Bay Bay’s Kids become the talk of South Central, and soon the country.
In New York it was the Uptown Comedy Club, where Chris Rock performed many times and it helped launch the careers of Flex Alexander, and Dougie Doug. The success of Def Comedy Jam further inspired more black owned comedy clubs to open in other cities across the country. Regular night clubs started to have their own comedy nights to take advantage of this genre. This inspired the so called mainstream comedy clubs, that controlled how many black acts they had on their weekend paid shows, this left only specific nights for Urban Comedy to cash in on. In L.A. alone I’ve seen clubs like the Improv, and Comedy Store bringing in more people in one night then they had the rest of the week. The charged more for that night but paid the comics less for that particular night than they would have the rest of the week. By the start of this century the likes of Steve Harvey, Cedric The Entertaine, Bernie Mac, and D.L. Hughley were big on network TV and/or the theaters, and got together to form The Kings of Comedy Tour, which set all kinds of box office records for concerts. I mean they even sold out the Georgia Dome, and earned millions. From that you saw the Blue Collar Comedy Tour with Jeff Foxworthy, and Larry The Cable Guys. It made the main stream take a look and try to reach new heights of it’s own. Today stand-up comedy is still very vibrant and strong with a plethora of comics who came up in the game while these strides were being made, but have yet to get the success they deserve. But they are still hungry and funny today as ever before. You also have some new jacks who are looking to break through just as well. Unfortunately there are no Def Comedy Jams, or Comic Views on the air to give them the national forum or notoriety to become big touring draws on the road yet. The Internet is another viable avenue that can be used to reach an audiance. Many comics have used this growth in the computer and digital age to be able to make there own CD’s and DVD’s, marketing themselves and
(quite frankly making extra cash after their shows). It shows the strength of comedy that as soon as people see your show they still want to take a piece of you home with them. It’s no question that as long as we are humans laughter is going to be a pleasure. Laughter is the height of happiness. Plain and simple people love to be happy so comedy will always have a place in the hearts of the public. The trick is how to get “the funny out there”, and make a good living doing it. The younger folks of the world today enjoy the stand up comedy like we did as kids. It makes me chuckle when my kids are on the computer and laughing at my comedy friends like Kevin Hart, Mike Epps, and Kat Williams. What’s even more funny- sometimes even embarrassing, is that some kids who are friends of my 13 year old son have recently come up to me and said they saw me on You Tube, reciting some of their favorite jokes that I told. Although it made me feel ackward, I realize they are doing the same things I did as a boy, when I used to sneak into the theather to watch Richard Pryor. I now realize this thing called comedy is no phenomenon but a way of life.
Black Kasper
BLACK KASPER He Is Ten Times Funnier By Jonathan W. Fields
Serving our country for the next eight years, she is in pursuit of her dream to become a Clinical Physiologist for the military. Son Shaun, (26) is married and the father of a new baby boy, Semaje. Because he’s such a gifted writer, Black Kasper see’s a bright future for him as well.
It is a sunny Wednesday here at Universal Studios in Hollywood, CA, and I am talking with Ten Times Funnier visionary, Black Kasper. A veteran of comedy, having worked with D.L. Hughley, Chris Rock, Chris Tucker, Eddie Griffin, Bruce Bruce and Tony Rock, including appearances on Comic View (where he won the thirty minute grand stand), Def Jam and performances at comedy clubs around the country, Black Kasper is relatively unknown.
Like funny man, Bob Hope in the 1950’s & 60’s, Kasper has done several USO shows for troops around the world. His most rewarding was in 2003, when he did an exhaustive comedy tour which included Korea, Tokyo, Germany, and Hawaii. Black Kasper, a father of two, was born, Shallbowie “Kasper” Nelson in Knoxville, TN and was raised in Atlanta GA. Daughter Najah, (20) is a former med-student at Baylor University in Texas.
Black Kasper’s love for comedy developed as a young child between the ages of nine and ten years old. He would make his own comedy cassettes and practice his routines in the mirror. Once perfected, Kasper would “take his show on the road.” The Sarah Moore Green Elementary School was his venue where he would sit at the lunch table surrounded by his third grade classmates and perform his comedy act.
During his early teens his late mother Mary Delores Nelson’s best friend was a DJ at the local radio station. He gave Kasper a plethora of classic comedy albums like Moms Mabley, Pigmeat Martin, Slappy White, Red Skelton, George Carlin, George Burns, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor and Flip Wilson. This helped Kasper master the art of storytelling at a very young age. At 14, he even wrote a fake note from his mother, so he could In 1993, while working as head sauté chef at Planet Hollywood,
go on stage at the Funny Bone Comedy Club in Knoxville, TN. he had a moment with God and asked,” Is there something better than this?” He remembers a coworker telling him, “You sound just like one of my former co-workers, Bruce Bruce. He would say that all the time on the cook line.” That was when Kasper’s “light bulb moment”occurred. He said to himself “That’s what I can do, I can tell a joke. This was the answer that God had given me, to pursue my gift.”
After a succession of comedy club appearances, Black Kasper was soon discovered by club owner and comedian Earthquake. Eventually he would become his opening act for several years, as well as many other national headliners. After touring around the East Coast, the Dirty South, and the Midwest Kasper decided to move to Los Angeles. He knew if he wanted to reach his highest potential, and to be the best, he had to go to Hollywood. In 2003, Kasper decided to move to Carson, CA where he began promoting his Ten Times Funnier brand at The Bistro 880.
After several years of entertaining his fans in Carson, Kasper moved to the world famous Laugh Factory in Long Beach, CA.
This epic collaboration allowed Kasper to promote his Ten Times Funnier at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, Universal Studios, Hollywood.
Kasper feels that “quality” Urban Comedy has been somewhat inaccessible to the general public in these difficult economic times. Ten Times Funnier allows him to present an exciting in-your-face style of comedy, not seen since the reign of Russell Simmons’ Def Jam in the early 1990’s. When asked about cost of admission, Black Kasper answers, “How much did you pay to park?” “Three dollars, I replied.” Black Kasper with his infectious smile sips his coke and says,
Throw in a two item minimum and you’re straight. A person can literally see ten comics for fewer than ten dollars.”
Kasper has an array of talents that include being a serious writer, actor and entrepreneur.
His “Ten Times Funnier” projAs I listened to Black Kasper speak ect, is only the beginning. of his early struggles to find his place in the world, it became evident to this writer, that he stands among other gifted artists, like Richard Pryor, Bernie Mac, Jim Carey, Steve Harvey, Eddie Griffin, Kevin Hart, D. L. Hugley, Jamie Foxx , Seinfield, Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin , Will Smith all of whom were destined to do what they do. With several projects in the works, Kasper has an array of talents that include being a serious writer, actor and entrepreneur.

by YCBurney There is no secret that urban hip hop fashion originated on the East Coast mainly New York. It is definitely a distinctive style of dressing and since African American kids brought it to the forefront in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other major big cities across the country. Each city seemingly bringing their own element to contribute to the style that is now seen worldwide and worn by almost every culture. People have asked what Hip Hop fashion is and what brought it about? “Glad you asked,” Hip Hop fashion as well as Hip Hop music seems to display the ultimate attitudes and relays the expressions of the hip hop cultural phenomenon in general. As far as the West Coast our attitudes toward dress has always been very casual and laid back because that is the atmosphere in which we live in Los Angeles. It is known for its many beaches and ocean fronts, the mountains and sunshine its one of the few places you can go to the beach and skiing all in the same day from sunshine to snow. Because of this Hollywood environment we have relaxed our days by wearing cut up jeans, designer jeans, shorts and a T-shirts of choice.
Now at night we can go from that to the black tie look in a matter of seconds. The night life is wild in Cali just like the East Coast. When you look around California as far as fashion goes, you can almost see who lives here and who is not from here. East coast men have a flare for fashion and layers of clothes since they deal with inclemant weather a lot more than those in California. It is a trade mark for them to have sheik jackets, hats ,long coats, scarves even skull hats. Living here in California you occasionally see men who dress with flavor oppose to the typical jeans and shirts. I think it is a personal choice, but if a man can be versatile enough to wear a pair of jeans, t-shirt or shirt with some nice pair shoes then jump into a suit and be just as sharp, then that a man to be reckoned with! The stretch for mens accessories has been a long one. In the 80’s and 90’s the hip hop fashion was well on the way with a lot of the focus on jewelry, heavy chains, multiple rings, names on their belts and large eyeglasses such as Cazals or Gazelles. Kangol bucket type hats were also popular.
Conversley women wore large gold earrings some with their names or other words in the middle. As time went on the jewelry subsided and became low key except for rappers it was a symbol of opulence. Many men who are older wear very little jewelry. However their has been an recent trend of men of all ages wearing more layered jewelry. Men are now looking for the unseen and the unusual styles of jewelry as a fashion statement and a brand or signature that fits their own unique style. This gives them an edge that fits their personality and fashion sense. How do you feel about West Coast vs East Coast Fashion? Send us an email and let us know what you think. We want to hear from you!

Here’s one for the pessimists to keep in mind: Life is full of surprises. One day you’re thinking about starting a T-shirt line — just a couple of graphics tees based on iconic Hollywood stuff, the hotels, diners and clubs that inspired you, back when you were in the scene. There’s one for Pinks Hot Dogs and another one with Angelyne that encourages its wearers to “Treat Yourself to a Hollywood Billboard.” For people who know Los Angeles, that’s funny. Years later, you finally get around to putting the line together and show the shirts to your friends, who apparently like them enough to show to their friends, who in turn show them to other friends.
“Suddenly”, you get a phone call that these people are interested in showing your stuff,” says Michael-Blu De Francesco, who along with friend Seth Lewis, owns Dom Blu Hollywood in the Fig Garden Village. Four weeks later that T-shirt line is now a full-on clothing line
-— Blu/Seth Farms — and you’re being flown to China, yes, CHINA, so it can debut during fashion week. This is pretty much the start of Blue + Seth Farms although their always much more to any story, but their beginning is just as creative as their ending, it all started with style and creativity and the results are remarkable exciting, fresh, new, and innovative are just some of the many ways to describe their swanky style.
Blu + Seth Farms Grown in Hollywood, California. Owners Michael-Blu De Francesco and Seth Lewis have created a wonderful and energizing line of clothing. They have brought their dream to life with two distinct labels, the first being Blu + Seth Farms, a reflection of the Southern California coastline in casual wear working primarily with soft cottons, earth tones, warm sandy browns and cool ocean blues all sun kissed and comforting. Blu + Seth Farms represents a casual style, with a hint of sophistication.

KEEP IT NATUREAL
By Sandra Jones
It is a cool Wednesday evening at the I am My Brothers’ Keeper meeting room in Southeast San Diego, where a small group of sistas are gathered for the San Diego Natural Hair meetup and orientation. Being a new member myself, I wanted to know a bit more about this meetup boasting a membership of 300+. Community activists, entrepreneurs and best friends Auset Price, organizer and natural hair stylist/owner of Hair Esteem Internatural, and Makena Hayes-Gargonnu, comedienne and founder of Conscious Comedy Explosion, a clean comedy group, are busy finalizing detailed notes as guests arrive. Hear their individual stories at http://youtu.be/QUhQwgPzE5c
Auset begins with the mission statement, “Greetings Naturalistas! Since July 2008, we have encouraged and inspired women in San Diego and abroad to “Keep It Natureal!” We take a wholistic approach to living a healthy lifestyle from “Head to Toe” through mind, body and spirit connection with the commonality of like minded women that loves their Natural hair. We specialize in hair education through creative natural hair workshops, social and cultural events. We consistently meet with other local black women to discuss styles and maintenance of natural hair. The group also serves to encourage and provide resources to women who are thinking about transitioning to natural hair.” The return to natural hair has grown rapidly from coast to coast with over 100 meetups dedicated to natural hair. Hair-Self esteem, has been the hallmark of many groups, reinforcing Black Hair is Beautiful. A recent article in Essence magazine emphasizes this belief at a black hair event in Houston, Texas. http://www.essence.com/2011/11/24/street-style-natural-dos-in-the-lone-star-state/
While naturalistas are returning in great numbers, for most, wellness care information is lacking. Having spent most of their teen to adult life in the stylists chair, wearing wigs, weaves or scalp pulling braids far too long, many black women are fearful of what they will encounter. Others have no idea how to care for this newly found hair freedom. Meetups such as SDNH exist to ease these concerns through education, networking and support. Currently SDNH hosts a teleseminar the 3rd Tuesday of each month to discuss hair wellness, pros of transistioning from chemicals, exciting hair care products and to stay informed on what’s happening in the natural hair industry. For additional information about San Diego Natural Hair meetup go to - http://www.meetup.com/sandiego-naturalhair/ keep doin’ it naturally my sistas!

RASHARD DAVENPORT –SUAVV MAGAZINE VISIONARY by Rashod Davenport - Suavv Magazine
Unlike many of the kids that he knew, his mother supported everything that he said he wanted to do. To further his goals, she encouraged him to push further and harder towards perfecting the outcome. After graduating high school in 2000 under the School of Business and Industry as well as Youth Entreprenuer training, Rashod went on to college with a full list of ideas and course loads. It wouldn’t be until 2005 that the list made sense. “I knew I wanted to own my own business and had a book of businesses,” Rashod reflects. “I was in Tower Records with my brother picking up our magazines for the week and realized that there wasn’t a magazine that spoke to us. There wasn’t anything that embodied who I was or what I wanted in totality. So, we said jokingly ‘we need to just start our own magazine’. A car ride with no music later and the joke started to become serious.” The two of them sat in the living room of their small apartment in Philadelphia and spread the collection of magazines across the floor and wrote out a list of what was liked and by disliked about each one. A week later, there was a concept for the magazine. Working off of one laptop, no money, and no experience, the two were As a teenager, Rashod Davenport realized that hard work, ready to make mistakes but refused to no pursue dedication, and a good attitude always paid off. We made mistakes and a lot of them, but we learned from all of them and bounced back from all of them.” When the two decided to move from Philadelphia to New York City to further pursue the goal of SUAVV, it was stamped with two interviews. The first was Spike Lee and follwed by Russell Simmons. That is the moment that they knew the choice was right.
“We were trying to move and didn’t have money. We needed like $5000 to move and were nowhere close to that. When we said, ‘we’re going to move!
We don’t know how but as of September 1st, we will not be living in Philly’ things just began to happen. Things fell into place. I still can’t describe that.” SUAVV Magazine is now becoming one of the hottest and freshest magazines on the market because Mike and Rashod refuse to veer away from what they set out for...Developing a magazine that THEY want to read while entertaining, educating, encouraging, and impacting their audience. With a roster of former interviews that could stand side to side with most “big named” Magazines, the duo continues to improve and build on what SUAVV is and what it will become.

Ambi’ance would like to introduce Isaac Poet Singer/songwriter, Isaac Brenton Poe, also known as Isaac Poet, is an aspiring new young talent gaining traction on the Atlanta music scene. Memorable soul and pop-rock tunes, with soulful vocals, and riveting live performances is his signature. He is a very prolific and versatile composer who writes in a wide range of styles. Originating from Cheverly, Maryland, he is definitely one to keep an eye on with his charismatic persona, eye-catching good looks, and a sound that is radio-friendly yet unique – distinctive in its introspection and honesty. Isaac Poet has always had a passion for music. Perhaps it originated from the fact his father listened to jazz music when he was a youngster, giving him an appreciation of the great American art form. The expressiveness that is one of its characteristics is what stood out most. This exposure to jazz, along with his personal fondness for the sounds of D. C. house music at an early age, entrenched in him the notion of expression meeting movement. It is a concept which characterizes some of his best work now, years later.
As a gifted storyteller he prides himself on being able to tell a tale that is memorable. As a poet he has a way of giving substance and significance to what he writes and sings about. His songs are stories or poetry set to music. The syncopation of the beat and the hook are important, but less so than the lyrics he crafts and the way in which he delivers them.
That his personal musical preferences are eclectic shows in compositions that he has written throughout the years. Love, lust, relationships, and other real-life emotions and situations, beautiful and otherwise, are fodder for his best works. They range from the soulful R&B ditty “So Beautiful” to a more rock-tinged composition called “Broken Pavement”. Having been continuously songwriting since the age of 16, Isaac Poet has a treasure trove of material that he is looking forward to releasing to his eager fan base – those who have heard his music and are asking to hear more, and to the unsuspecting music-loving public world-wide.
For the past six years, he has studied the arts associated with acting, music and fashion design. He has appeared in several movies, videos and advertisements. He has also modeled in well over 200 events, including walking in shows for fashion industry heavyweights Calvin Klein and Sean John, and taught many others in this arena. He is also the founder of “Poe-tential Productions,” which is his talent agency primarily used to provide extras for movies, videos and modeling events. Ambi’ance would like to thank Issac Poet for the Ambi’ance Theme Song!
However, says Isaac Poet, “The formulation of my first CD is the most exciting thing I have ever done. Without a doubt, it is my desire to reach a pinnacle of success, creating a quality of music that will be a blessing to the listeners and make it pleasurable to have worked with me. I eagerly await the CD’s release. It’ll be a blessed day when it hits the shelves. ” His fans couldn’t agree more”. CONTACT: RODNEY OLIVER AT (678) 882-4019

Rites of Passage Program by Michelle Stackfield
With a population of 47,418, median household income of $29,945 and African Americans making up more than half of the racial diversity followed by twenty-nine percent Whites and fifteen percent Hispanic, the crime rate in the city of Harrisburg is more than double the national average per capita and unemployment is currently at ten percent. Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania, is centrally located less than one hundred miles west of Philadelphia, less than seventy miles north of Baltimore, MD, and approximately three and a half hours southwest of New York City. While being the birthplace of Newt Gingrich and Philadelphia Eagles’ LeSean McCoy to name a few, this is a very small city in comparison to Baltimore, whose population is more than 650,000 and Philadelphia with a population of over 1.5 million. When taking a realistic look into the city, town, or state in which you live, these statistics can be overwhelming.
The up side of this is that a great percentage of the young adults graduating from local high schools go on to pursue their college educations receive their bachelor’s and or graduate’s degree and returned to give back to their communities. For Harrisburg, this is the story of most of its professional life-long residents. Amongst the crime-rate statistics, low-income, and unemployment, I have found a diamond in the rough!
A program set out to make a statement. I stumbled upon this ‘gem’ during a community meeting. As we introduced ourselves and set about the business of brain-storming in regards to what each of our agencies could bring to the table in an effort of assisting an at-risk youth schoolbased program, a sister with locs spoke of her program. Fortunately, I was able to catch up with her after the meeting, gather more information and decided to stop by and observe her program that weekend. Like many grassroots programs, this one and the founders have decided that instead of sitting back and looking at the statistics and be part of the problem, they would be part of the solution. And looking at the statistics and be part of the problem, they would be part of the solution.
Daughters of the Ankh Rites of Passage Program is a program designed for girls ages 6-18, marking a time when a person reaches a new and significant change in his/her life, and is something that the majority of cultures celebrate. This program is designed to work with the young ladies and their parents in preparation to make a smooth transition into womanhood, being fully equipped for their role in the community and in the world.
They are expected to leave having developed a strong sense in self, cultural pride, empowerment, and the ability to showcase their God-given gifts they were truly born with. “The African woman is the mother and creator of nations. The Daughters of the Ankh Rites of Passage Program was developed in an effort to restore our traditional GREATNESS!”, states Rosa L. Watson, M.Ed., Program Creator.. The staff consists of mentors or guides whom are the special key to open the door to those gifts these young ladies have through encouragement, respect and affinity in seeing the resemblance of her and the future of these young ladies…a passing of the torch so to speak. A passage of the Mentor’s role reads: …at the core of mentoring is the understanding that “genius” must be invited out of the youth. Everyone carries into this world something important that they must deliver, and mentors help
to deliver that “genius” to the community. Failure to give birth to the “genius” that one is born with kills that “genius” along with the person carrying it. Today, so many of our children’s hopes, dreams and gifts are destroyed way before they have ever been discovered leaving them as wandering nomads, no hopes and shattered dreams on a journey to nowhere. In this program, these mentors are able to see these gifts and give birth to adults who are able to contribute these “gifts” to their community. As part of their Rites of Passage, the Daughters of the Ankh’s curriculum consists of developing a: Positive Self-Image (Self love, Self-esteem, Self-respect,)Values and Decision Making. Mental, Emotional and Spiritual Fitness while dealing with life’s challenges. Physical Fitness (being comfortable in their own skin). Intellectual Fitness (Setting personal, Educational, Financial and Career goals) A Positive Place
in Society (Social Skills) Healthy Relationships/Healthy Communication (Getting along with others) Staying out of Harms Way (Saying ‘NO to Drugs, Violence, and Sex before Marriage) Looking “Your” Best (Grooming, Hair Care, Fashion Tips) Also incorporated throughout the program is the understanding of Libation, the Black National Anthem, Nguzo Saba, Traditional African Dance, Leadership, Public Speaking, and the Twi Language! Today as the Daughters of the Ankh prepare for this year’s Kwanzaa “Nia” (which means “purpose”) celebration I am a mentor/guide. Never a believer in handing fate to negative statistics, I along with the other mentors and founders of YaaKofiAma Nia House’s-Daughters of the Ankh have vowed to be a part of the statistics of successes by passing the torch of our ancestors, paying it forward! The Artist and His Art This collection is a culmination of several styles and techniques, all categorized under the heading of Abstract Expressionism. Each work is meant to provoke thought, and deeper feeling within the viewer, based upon that individual’s perception. Rollins receives inspiration from everyday life, through it’s beauty, and it’s release. Autumn Nights This painting showcases the feeling one may have when venturing out into a park, or perhaps a wooded area on a chilled evening. There is darkness and mystery; however one notices the golden light pulling one through to the other side, to warmth. “Emergence” Suggested are multiple rooms, or spaces of the heart, seemingly disjointed, in the background quadrants. However, as we are drawn in, we notice that right in front of us, we see connectivity and warmth. Contact David - mr.david.rollins@gmail.com Photographer’s name: Charles Cavanaugh

Abby suffers from autism and expressive/receptive language disorder. Abby cannot have a normal conversation like you and I. We do alot of communication through the use of visual pictures. Autism affects boys more than girls. Abby is preoccupied with circular shapes and mixtures of colors Although Abby is not a trained artist, the benefits that she derives from such artwork is tremendous. Abby loves circles and most of her artwork is done showing circles. We have alot of fun together creating artwork and I hope that you will find one that you enjoy and will display proudly in your home. Please pass the word around about us. We lost everything (house, car, possessions) and are trying to rebuild our lives.

SHANE JONES- UNPLUGGED
by HM2 J.W. Fields
He is as Smooth as a summer’s breeze, Handsome like Elvis, Charismatic ala Antonio Banderas, and Humble like Tim Tebow. I am talking about Air Force Staff Sgt. Shane Jones, who recently arrived in Hollywood from Iraq. Yes, THAT Iraq! Shane Jones is a seasoned entertainer as evidenced by his resume of accomplishments abroad. He has entertained over 110 million people worldwide via television and radio broadcasts aired in over 32 different countries. His accomplishments include performances at the 2011 Super Bowl, the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coca Cola 600 (both net more than 100 million viewers annually), Hawaii’s Most Beautiful Man for 2012, Honorary Judge for the Miss Hawaii USA’s 2012 Pageant, and the featured model in a full page spread of the Miss Hawaii USA’s World Wide Magazine. This aspiring actor has also been on several television shows to include, Hawaii Five-0 and MTV’s reality series, “Parental Control”. His matine looks have gained him a ten foot high billboard advertising Honolulu’s “First Friday Art Walk” (having beat out several of Hawaii’s best known heartthrobs including, Alex O’Loughlin and Daniel Dae Kim of “Hawaii Five-0” and Keanu Reeves, who is best known for his roles in “The Matrix”, “Speed”, and “Street Kings”). By the age of twenty, Shane’s proficiency on the guitar, ukulele, mandolin and banjo made him one of the-most-sort-after musicians forhe “Tops in Blue” Air Force band, which performs worldwide.
Ambi’ance Magazine caught up with Shane as he was preparing for a modeling shoot in Los Angeles. The former football and track/field star joined me for lunch at the Caffe Romas in Beverly Hills. Shane a fitness buff who does not smoke or drink, discussed his life and his future goals now that he is out of the military.
Shane: Being from Southern California, i’m able to “stay in the mix” as far as entertainment and acting are concerned. Ambi’ance: So you want to be an actor as well. Shane: Oh, yes! I have done a lot of studying during my off duty time. I have taken acting and music lessons in San Antonio Texas, Hawaii, and Los Angeles. Ambi’ance: Can you share with our readers whom you have studied under or worked with? Shane: Of course, I have taken “Acting on Film”, “Personal and Group Sessions”, under Wayne Ward SAG/AFTRA, Stage/Live Performance with Tom Edwards-Producers TIB, Actors Workshop with Paul Payne, and my music has been kept tight with composer, Barry Best. Ambi’ance: Shane, it is very clear that you are deShane: The two things I have always wanted to do termined to be an actor. were to be an actor and a military man. It is funny Shane: Since I was a kid, watching those old black how those two things paralleled each other when and white war movies, i always imagined myself I was a child. I remember watching the old black working( as a full time actor in Hollywood). and white combat movies thinking, “Those guys Ambi’ance: I understand you are working towards are soooo cool”. I would then stand in front of the mirror practicing my salutes and standing at parade your Masters degree. Shane: Yes, I will soon be graduating with a Masrest. My favorite combat flick was “Pearl Harbor”, ters Degree in Public Relations. not because of Ben Affleck or Cuba Gooding Jr., Ambi’ance: And then? but because of the historical and surreal impact, Shane: I will be commissioned as a United States it had on me being stationed in Hawaii. Although he was only fourteen at the tainers of our time have served their country during time, he was “determined to represent his country war time and gone on to Hollywood’s immortality. and fight for those values” so many normally had Shane: Like whom? Burrell) just to name a few. to serve my country. As everyone else, I had both good and bad moments, but I always felt that things Shane: Wow, I never looked at it that way! would work out. Being a spiritual person, I feel that Ambi’ance: That is because you are a spiritually grounded young man with a structured plan for sucthe good always out-weighs the bad, so I just tried cess. You are serious about your education, you love to concentrate on the POSITIVE. That is where your country, your talent has not gone to your head, my music and mission came into play, because no matter what, my guitar and my sidearm were always and you are refreshingly humble.
