LET’S ASK LENA LENA ON NEGATIVITY No matter what, Self-confidence is the foundation to your success. Don’t allow your self-confidence to succumb to negativity. If unchecked negativity can be a dream killer. Talking with my X’treme Nailz sisters, I realized that dealing with negativity was a common denominator However we all know, being an X’treme Nailz Diva comes with some public criticism and negativity. How we handle that negativity determines our path to success (remember only 10 percent of stressors are tangible, the other 90 percent is how we handle them) So let’s put the NEGATIVITY to rest right now! Here is my personal tips on overcoming negativity
#1
Smile- Always have a smile on your face, it is contagious. YOU’LL SEE!
#2
Surround yourself with people who generate positive energy.
#3 Be yourself and remember....No One and I mean No One is perfect and allow yourself to move on. My advice to you is NEVER allow anyone

ing, molding and nail fungus issues that can occur. I will be happy to share those tips with you. If you have natural nails long or short there are a couple of suggestions.
#1
If you don’t have time to keep up the maintenance of wearing acrylic overlay which is required to maintain healthy nails, I suggest regular manicures which involves pushing back the cuticles trimming the nails and wearing a nail hardener over them to prevent chipping.
#2
If you want to apply an acrylic overlay over your natural nails, I strongly suggest that you should NEVER EVER use the nail drill bit on top of
LENA ON NAIL CARE I am often asked, how I take care of my nails being the length that they are. I have been a licensed Nail Technician for over 30 years and I’ve learned a lot.
“First, I am honored to be a named Brand Ambassador of X’treme Nailz and I hope I can be the one that you can depend on to be there for you. I have a vision about how X’treme Nailz can reach out to many of you who are thinking about and even wanting to step out and express yourself, whether it is about your nails, your hair, your fashion or whatever it is for you to express WHO YOU ARE. This platform is for YOU”
Maintaining nails that are long and some extremely long can be challenging. If you are wearing acrylic overlays over your natural nails or wearing sculptured nails, maintenance and care is extremely important especially when it comes to the health of your nails. To prevent lifting, molding and nail fungus, it is very important to use quality products. Application of the product is based on experience to ensure that you are preventing lift-
your natural nail bed. This can be very damaging overtime. I suggest prepping the nails manually. There is a right way and a wrong way of doing this and I will be happy to share this with you as well. So to conclude.... Be yourself. Step out there Ladies and MAKE YOUR STATEMENT LADIES. Show that Confidence and Strength and always remember.... BE YOURSELF, YOU ARE MARVELOUS!!! TREME NAILS MAGAZINE • 7

Cordelia Goldeelocs Adams Natural Creative Integrity Photography by tonysmithphoto.com
When this superstar of long nails told me, she had been growing her nails for 32 years, my mind went blank. Cordelia Goldeelocs Adams is a chic eclectic woman with an artistic flair that is undeniably unforgettable. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a conversation with this well-rounded spirit is worth a million. She graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s in fine arts and artsy she is. From head to toe, this ethnically elegant females’ style is captivating. She is a statement all her own, and it has made her a legend in a community she eventually left due to the overwhelming and somewhat fanatical attention. Her creative nature and a degree in the arts are in her nail art and businesses with a trademark signature. Her nails are a canvas to her soul and a window to freedom of expression. No explanations, no cares for opin-
ion or notice, as personal as a fingerprint, and the private lifestyle she demands. She needs no nail tech, applying both the protective acrylic overlay and their art suitable to her liking and growing adaptability. It was her Mom that inspired her. The art on her nails, ever so carefully preserved for as much as four years, redefined or styled to suit her taste. She has no favorite color(s) she coordinates with clothing. To Cordelia the nails are expressionism all their own and not coordinated for fashion trends or color codes. Despite a community that often thrives off the fetish aspect of the genre, Cordelia only comprehends how they apply to her lifestyle through creative expression. She was fortunate to have retired from a job she had while growing them. Yes, they got attention, but the only time it was negative would be when new supervisors came in. When they instruct her, they will need to

be cut a shorter length for the job, she would explain they have no impact on her work efficiency. Just allow me to finish the day. She always proved them wrong and was known as the fastest worker there. People have no understanding of adaptability when they are grown and not purchased, she explained. Nails grow according to your lifestyle. The problem with most people is they can not comprehend X'treme Nailz allowing regular employment or activity. Cordelia is so over the usual unsolicited commentary they cause. She has experienced watching others debate over how she wipes herself while acting it out before her amongst themselves. That was a new twist. People ask how do you eat? She considers it a legit question if they are from another culture that rarely uses utensils. When Americans ask that question, it is like a "duh" moment. Her biggest pet peeve would be taking pictures without asking permission. I do not mind so much allowing photos if people ask. It allows me to tell them only for their personal use and not social media, she says. It is like, being a circus act and very offensive. People will say they felt I would not let them take photos. So, you sneak and take a pic of them without asking anyway? You just made the intrusion worse, she stat-

nails used temporarily as a fashion statement by someone younger than the years you have grown yours, she said. Being accepted in the X'treme Nailz is respectful exposure for understanding the women who have adorned them year-end, year out.
Her only personal inconvenience? She is no longer enjoying the sports she has always enjoyed participating in throughout the years, laughing at her tom-boyish traits, something I fully understand growing up playing basketball, softball, volleyball, and football in a family that was 95% male. You learn to channel those energies into less nail-threatening athletics to suffice.
Cordelia has been approached many times by other forums asked to talk about her free-flowing talons. She had no interest because they present you as a spectacle, without the appreciation of admiring viewers. The sudden acceptance of mainstream media stepping in with temporary fashion statements has no validity to this nail icon whose segment was cut for other people with taboo practices when asked to be a guest on Geraldo with Lena Cole in the early '90s.
While discussing the X’treme Nailz International platform and the new wave of celebrity attention flooding the media? Cordelia has the perspective of any innovator of creative expression. Her nails were grown and not used as some attention-gaining statement for dramatic effect during a photoshoot. There is nothing else left to create continual attention in social media. She feels they are used for a shock factor when talking about hip-hop artists like Cardi B. She finds it insulting to be compared to those celebrities when she has 32 years' worth of maintenance and creative care put into her hands. Then you get compared to artificial
Cordelia is, without doubt, an innovator in the X'treme Nailz Hall of Fame. She represents artistic dedication and longevity in the pursuit of elongated-wondrous nails taking on a life all their own. We are happy to "put some respect on it" in this publication. For women like Cordelia, such lengths are not a choice or a trending phase. It is as natural as every other facet of her human existence. Cordelia and everything about this eclectic Goldeelocced beauty intrigues. I was honored to have this time to laugh and talk with her and share her story.

eemingly demure, this hidden gem in the community will soon shed her shy persona and introduce the alter-ego, Queen Tippie Taps.

Queen Tippie Taps
Season Nixon decided to proceed with the growth of her long talons the first week of November 2017. Three years and five months or as of this publication, it will be her third time allowing them to extreme-lengths, and she is not going to stop. We discussed the positive and negative aspects of extreme-nail growth. Season says they make her happy, she loves the look, exuberating color combinations, and she loves how the thumb and index finger twist, curve, and the sound they make when they clack together. On the other side of the spectrum, they get caught under long sleeves or occasionally lock together. She finds herself having to be careful when closing doors.
TREME NAILS MAGAZINE • 13
Season has found her niche in the community. Describing herself as a quiet person, she can express her art through the nails. Though confidently attractive or, as she phrased it, a head-turner, the longer nail length allows her to exude her creative side. The X’treme Nailz movement gives people with no platform a stage, you could say. It grants them to be seen and understood by those who appreciate them. Extreme nails do come with a public opinion and typically of a discriminating nature due to prejudice exhibited by those still viewing them as taboo. What irritates her most is that people worry about your lower-body hygiene. Saying she lets them know, it is all kosher over here and adaptability comes with growth. In public settings, among those who are unfamiliar with her, they do draw attention. She finds people like to silently watch as she performs regular tasks like writing or tying her shoe. Once they see how she handles the deed, usually they are impressed. Often, she has been told they would never be able to function with naillengths like hers. Some people avoid asking her questions directly and choose to question whomever she is with at the time. She would prefer they address her personally instead of acting as though they affect her ability to communicate or the inquiry is offensive. Season takes responsibility for her nail care and designed a workspace modified solely for her nail that

purpose. She spends at minimum five hours on their care, preferring a slim appearance with enough thickness to accommodate her daily activities. Her favorite color is a Pretty Blue, indulged in striped patterns and enthralled by the numerous variations she can create as they grow. The growth gives her a sense of achievement. The two people that inspired her to grow longer-lengths than average? The Olympic runner, Florence Joyner Kersee enchanted, by the colors and the curl of her elongated natural nails. It gave her a sense of royalty to Season. There is also a first cousin that used to grow her right thumbnail unusually long. The dedication and time she used to maintain it intrigued Season, and the choice was a testament to the cousin’s style. Now in creating her signature stripes/bands of colors. She enjoys adorning her talons with various hues of blue, favorably with candy cane-like stripes. She used to coordinate the nails and the outfits. Most women in the community eventually let them morph into a formidable entity. The nails become a singular accessory shining by themselves, giving one a sense of being on stage when strangers are peering. I must remember, oh yeah, my nails. Her feelings about X’treme Nailz International establishing this platform for the community? Fi-
nally, we have a platform to reach and teach people about what we do, how we adapt as the nails grow, like-minded people, respecting the love of exaggerated nails, the labor, and artistic expression. We can share our thoughts and feelings on varied lifestyles. Attentive and overjoyed by the entertainment industry embrace of the new wave of extreme bling nails among women in various genres. She mentions, typically fashion focuses only on clothes, hair, or objects like cars. Now the emphasis is on the small personal details like nail art. She said it is about time. Cardi B. has the most fly nails in the entertainment business. Saweetie and Suki Hana follow as strong second-place contenders. They might have fake nails, but it is all good, as long as they exhibit creativity and beauty to the public. The exposure sheds a more positive light. As for Queen Tippie Taps “aka” QTT. She has plans of debuting ASMR videos on different media platforms, eventually giving her fans weekly content.

or fifteen years, this stylish beauty has been gracing the Jersey area with flair and a style all her own. Trinette Williams is by far one of the most decorated and creative ladies in the community. Her nails are a collaborative effort with one of the leading ladies in the industry, and she knows what she wants upon arrival. Trinette is a survivor, and her nails have symbolism only a few can comprehend. After being told her nails needed cutting a few years ago while battling Breast Cancer. During her chemotherapy, they grew with a vengeance. They gave her a sense of strength, like in the story of Sampson and Delila. Just as his hair was his source of power, her battle seemed to equate to his long mane. They were her sign to remain positive, a source of strength only she could internalize. She feels within their determination to grow lies the ability and signs of healing. While all other attributes faded from the lifesaving treatments, they accelerated as if daring the rest of her body to fail them. It became impossible to ignore and the thought of them not being there gave her a sense of impending doom. She could not help but feel that without their extreme length, the ability to have a full recovery felt bleak. Her
war was not quite over, and the battle again continues yet they remain strong. Her bi-weekly trips to her only trusted Nail Tech are taken in stride. Her positive attitude comes with the remembrance of all she’s suffered and the inner strength they give. A quirk within her strong faith and unwillingness to succumb. With all this notable wisdom and endurance, she had to endure the dreaded question of how you wipe yourself. With a straight face and Northern temperance, she typically states she does not and tells them their husband does it for her. Needless to say, the inquisition ends there, and the humor is within their perplexed look. Such a rude question deserves an answer that throws one back according to Trinette and most ladies in the community. Jobs in her past were not often an issue and her freedom to shine as a bartender in her brother’s bar was freeing. As a bus driver, she had to be conscious of how long they grew. Both creating attention but not a distraction from her skills. She frowns upon that attitude: she is incapable of doing regular activities and most insulting of all nasty, unclean, or in any way neglectful of hygienic care. A crown for her King, representation of the Biker’s chapter he reigns over, and of course, her crown as his Queen. Her thumbs are pierced, like statements in a suspense novel. I gaped in wonderment asking permission to someday be bold enough to try the look in her honor. Embellished with stones and various facets of wonder. She loves coordinating her fashion with her nails and considers what events and occasions before she visits her tailor of talons. Trinette realized stones were just as significant to her look as the collection of oddities she acquired to adorn them. Jackie Joyner Kersee was her inspiration, the curve of her nails and regal appearance entranced her and she related to her strength and endurance. The altered state, being a strong sculpted athlete yet dainty and poetic in appearance and grace. The contrast was inspirational, but the admiration was not. The aforethought Jackie was the person she remembers standing out amongst the crowd.
was a fetish or an art form? I learned how this incredible woman was a collector of the most intricate and fascinating trinkets and miniatures one could collect. Oh did I mention that her nail care and art are meticulously applied by none other than Maria Ortiz her sole Nail Tech of choice. Trinette buys trinkets and specialty items to go on her nails that are not designed for nails because Maria can see her vision and finds a way to incorporate it into whatever nail design she is imagining/describing. She is all about the art and all that it represents. She adorns all colors at some point having no signature color but signature nails. She indulges in mood polishes at times preferring the red to burgundy and black to a neutral shifting of the colors according to temperature. She does not like them too thick but appropriate for their design, something Maria specializes in. 18 •

X’treme Nailz magazine is the perfect forum to change the mindset of those thrown aback by what they cannot understand. Trinette, like the rest of us, has noticed that the entertainment world has embraced what was once a spectacle. Famous women like Cardi B. and Mulatto have gotten her attention via social media posts, videos, and photoshoots sporting extreme lengths on their fingers. This new wave of attention does break down barriers, stereotypes, and helps to expose them in an acceptable fashion people accept because they view entertainers differently and realizing it is more natural to some than others. No matter their opinion it is who she is, and I will leave it to your imagination what she said opinions are like. I can only state I wholeheartedly agree.

A statement those of us in the workplace know all too well. Fortunately, it has not hindered her career. The Owner of Exquisite Design Nail Salon and a licensed cosmetologist. Her true pet-peeves are nail-biting and men who assume they should inform her that she would be worthy of dating them if she cut her nails. We both had to recover from laughter about that pretentious type. But the response validated the similarities auntie and niece share. I should mention my honor to proclaiming this audacious entrepreneur. As an established nail tech and model, what styles, embellishments, and influences captivated her liking? She loves her nails thin and narrowed to an intimidating stiletto and protects them with slightly more thickness where they come over the finger to prevent breakage. Like millions of longer nailed women, Jackie Joyner (Flo Jo) inspired her most as a youth. But her love of nail art began long before the adoration of FloJo. She obtained her first nail job at the tender age of four years old. With Grandma being her first client, Nicole grew up placing those clippings on her nails to prepare for her not-so-distant nail goals. This beguiling soul was born for extreme nails. And she loves that this magazine gives a platform to those who have shut themselves away from public berating. Fostering her talent by letting each nail make an individual statement. 22 •

She stopped limiting herself by focusing on matching attire. Unrestricted in her modeling career. The fashion industry has shown positive attention and little distraction as onlookers focus on what design appeals to their sense of style or taste. Admired, the pageant winning model and her ability to exhibit sovereignty from the garments adorned by her svelte figure are genuinely impressive. Designers and photographers have not expressed negativity either, perhaps gaining notoriety by the curiosity she invokes. Sylvia Browne
THE PSYCHIC WITH THE LONG RED NAILS
ylvia Celeste Browne (October 19, 1936 – November 20, 2013) was an X’treme Nailz American author who claimed to be a medium with psychic abilities. She appeared regularly on television and radio, including on The Montel Williams Show and Larry King Live, and hosted an hour-long online radio show on Hay House Radio. Browne was frequently discredited and faced criticism for making pronouncements that were later found to be false, including those related to missing persons. She was also a convicted criminal, having faced theft charges in 1992. Despite the considerable negative publicity, she maintained a large following until her death in 2013 Sylvia Browne grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of William Lee and Celeste (née Coil) Shoemaker. Her father held several different jobs, working at times in mail delivery, jewelry sales, and as a vice president of a major freight line. Browne was raised mostly as a Catholic, and was said to have an Episcopalian mother, a Lutheran maternal grandmother, Jewish father, and relatives from all these faiths. Browne claimed she started seeing visions at the age of five, and that her grandmother, who she claimed was also a psychic medium, helped her understand what they meant. Browne also claimed her great-uncle was a psychic medium and was “rabid about UFOs”. Browne was a frequent guest on U.S. television and radio programs, including Larry King Live, The Montel Williams Show, That’s Incredible!, and Coast to Coast AM. During these appearances, she usually discussed her claimed abilities with the host and then performed readings for audience members or callers.
her own hour-long online radio show on Hay House Radio, where she performed readings and discussed paranormal issues. Browne appeared in a 1991 episode of Haunted Lives: True Ghost Stories. In the segment “Ghosts R Us”, she portrayed herself in a recreation of events that purportedly took place in a haunted Toys R Us store. Browne also appeared as herself on the CBS television soap opera The Young and the Restless in December 2006. Browne cultivated a large following. In 2007, she had a four-year waiting list for readings by telephone. That same year, hundreds of people joined Browne on a cruise, each paying thousands of dollars for psychic readings. Many of her books became staples on The New York Times Best Seller list. Her Red Nails continued to be a conversation piece during her speaking engagements. Browne attracted media attention seven years after her death, when social media users claimed that a prediction in her 2008 book End of Days referred to the COVID-19 pandemic (she claimed “a severe pneumonia-like illness” would spread “around” 2020). News coverage of the alleged similarity appeared in March 2020 and was picked up by celebrities with large social media platforms such as Kim Kardashian. Browne married four times. Her first marriage, from 1959 to 1972, was to Gary Dufresne. The couple had two sons, Paul, and Christopher. She took the surname Brown upon her third marriage, and later changed it to Browne. Her fourth marriage took place on February 14, 2009, to Michael Ulery, the owner of a jewelry store.
It was during these early 80’s TV appearances that people started to notice the long red stiletto nails that would become her trademark.
In March 2011, the Society of Novus Spiritus, the Gnostic Christian Church founded by Browne, announced that she had suffered a heart attack on March 21 in Hawaii, requesting donations on her behalf.
On certain occasions she was paired with other guests, including skeptics, often leading to debate about the authenticity of Browne’s psychic abilities. Browne hosted
Browne transitioned on November 20, 2013, aged 77, at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California, and yes she was still sporting those Long Red Nails. TREME NAILS MAGAZINE • 25

Devers was born in Seattle, Washington, and grew up near National City, California, graduating from Sweetwater High School in 1984 (Sweetwater's football and track stadium would later be named Gail Devers Stadium.) A young talent in the 100 m and 100 m hurdles, Devers was in training for the 1988 Summer Olympics, started experiencing health problems, suffering from among others migraine and vision loss. She qualified for the Olympics 100 m hurdles, in which she was eliminated in the semi-finals, but her health continued to deteriorate even further. Devers started in 800m in high school and ran a personal best of 2:08. In 1990, she was diagnosed with Graves' disease and underwent radioactive iodine treatment followed by thyroid hormone replacement therapy. During her radiation treatment, Devers began to develop blistering and swelling of her feet. Eventually, the sprinter could barely walk and had to crawl and or be carried. A doctor considered amputating her feet. Amazingly, Devers recovered after the radiation treatment was discontinued, and she resumed training. At the 1991 World Championships, she won a silver medal in the 100 m hurdles. 32 •

At the 1992 Summer Olympics, Devers starred. She qualified for the final of the 100 m, which ended in an exciting finish, with five women finishing close (within 0.06 seconds). The photo finish showed Devers had narrowly beaten Jamaican Juliet Cuthbert. In the final of the 100 m hurdles, Devers' lead event, she seemed to be running towards a second gold medal, when she hit the final hurdle and stumbled over the finish line in fifth place, leaving Voula Patoulidou from Greece as the upset winner. In 1993, Devers won the 1993 World Championships in Athletics 100 m title after - again - a photo finish win over Merlene Ottey in an apparent dead heat, and the 100 m hurdles title. She retained her hurdles title in 1995. The 100 m final at the 1996 Summer Olympics was an almost exact repeat of the World Championships final three years before. Ottey and Devers again finished at the same time and did not know who had won the race. Again, both were awarded the same time of 10.94 seconds, but Devers was judged to have finished first and became the first woman to retain the Olympic 100 m title since Wyomia Tyus. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce duplicated the feat in 2012. In the final of her favorite
event, Devers again failed, as she finished fourth and outside of the medals. With the 4 × 100 m relay team, Devers won her third Olympic gold medal. After these Olympics, Devers concentrated on the hurdles event, winning the World Championship again in 1999, but she had to forfeit for the semi-finals at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Devers competed in the 100 m and 100 m hurdles at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, her fifth Olympic Games. Devers left competition in 2005 to give birth to a child with her husband and returned in 2006. On February 2, 2007, at the age of 40, Devers edged 2004 Olympic champion Joanna Hayes to win the 60 m hurdles event at the Millrose Games in 7.86 seconds - the best time in the world that season and just 0.12 off the record she set in 2003. Furthermore, the time bettered the listed World Record for a 40-year-old by almost 7 tenths of a second.
In 2011, Gail was elected into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. The following year she was elected into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. Gail should be inducted in the X’treme Nailz Hall of Fame. In November 2012, Devers was announced as a 2013 recipient of the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, presented annually to six distinguished former college student-athletes on the 25th anniversary of the end of their college sports careers. Today Gail Devers attends several charity events, does book signings, and speaks at high schools, colleges, and corporate events. Although Gail Devers “Claws for a Cause” are no longer talons, she still turns heads with her Fly Nailz.
During her career, Devers was notable for having exceptionally long, heavily decorated fingernails. One of the fastest starters in the world, Devers even had to alter her starting position to accommodate her long nails. Her long nails came as the result of a contest her father devised to get her to stop biting her nails as a child. How many times have we heard this story, from some of our legendary x’treme nailz sisters? The 80’s was such an amazing and historical time for self-expression and uniqueness (especially in women’s sports). Women’s basketball was starting to get some well-deserved recognition, the first civilian woman to board the space shuttle happened, the first of a series of women commercial pilots kicked off and FLY NAILZ went to the Olympics! FloJo and Gail Devers turned the status quo upside down with those Red, Silver, Gold and Black claws the sported at the 1984 Olympics! A lot of today’s x’treme nailz divas, were inspired by the flamboyance those x’treme Nailz Pioneers displayed. TREME NAILS MAGAZINE • 33

Customers seek her as clientele informs other of the interesting woman at the facility. “You absolutely must see those nails!” while attempts to hide them are futile. Tonya herself, only notices the length in those typical situations many would mention, like dropping coins and that dreaded ATM! Any long-nailed enthusiast will tell you that tweezers are a girl’s best friend, and a debit card helps to
pick up a coin. Adaption is key. Of course, there is always the haters attempting to make her appear inadequate, testing not only her abilities to perform but temperance as well. After replying to the most abstract and rudest question in her memory, a customer anticipated that Tonya would immediately be discharged for her quick and most appropriate answer to how she could navigate a menstrual tool. Instead, management let it be known that such questions or
assumed right to inquire was more inappropriate than any response could warrant. That customer left a very unhappy patron and deservingly shamed by the manager for instigating an attempt to have Tonya fired. If these are the cons of having extreme nails, what, might you ask could be her response to the pro-side of the equation? Her nail technician! She sees her natural wonders as a canvas waiting to be artistically appreciated and looks forward to their appointments.
When asked how she feels about the recent emergence of interest in extreme lengths of nails over the years, it became apparent that Tonya would be sporting her jewels with or without acceptance. Accustomed to women in her family adorning slightly longer and always manicured nails, Tonya’s grandmother and mother kept elegantly painted and groomed nails for as long as she can remember, so longer lengths for Tonya were inevitable. Well, I am a professional ink artist. I mostly draw illustrations and comic style pieces.
It really has not impacted me too badly. I do work another job to help so that I’m not financially bankrupt. I often receive many commissions or requests so I feel I have great opportunities.

How long have you been into drawing?

I have always loved having acrylic nails, but my husband was the inspiration behind the flared style nails.
XL PA
Are those called duck feet nails?
XL
What are the pros & cons of maintaining those types of nails.?
PA
I found that there is way more pros than anything. I found that the nails make my hands look longer and more feminine since I’m quite short. The only negative would be that I cannot take out my piercings, although I do have help with that if needed.
XL
Ironically on the East Coast I see those nails styles worn by the LGBTQ community.
What types of comic books do you do? The comic art that I normally work on is usually based in science fiction, horror, and a bit comedy. However, I have an entire erotica series that I’ve been working on since the pandemic began. TREME NAILS MAGAZINE

It doesn’t differ much to be honest. It takes about the same time to work on a refill. Sometimes I have to go back to the salon sooner than shorter squared nails and sometimes I can go longer without a fill.

I often receive very positive feedback. People usually ask where I got them done, what’s the name of the style. Most assume I’m artistic based off of the nails and my general look. However, I do receive some negative criticism, but with those people you just have to shrug it off.
No, it isn’t. I just wear the nails for my own personal preference. I do not care for trends or what others think.

SOCIAL ADVOCATE, SURVIVOR AND SCHOLAR elody Wilson, known to most as Mel, created the Long Nail Beauties Association, working with Mr. Jonathan Fields more than a decade ago. A uniting catalyst for the social networking of women discovering others that indulged in the extreme nail genre. The forum was to create a platform for other ordinary working Mothers, sisters, and professionals within the community. It evolved into a forum where the men who appreciated and admired these women were often the ones to induct ladies into the community. As for her journey, Melody has been growing her nails to extreme lengths since she was 19 years old. Drawing inspiration from her Mother, Lee Redmond, Florence “Flo Jo” Griffith Joyner, and 90s vocalist of SWV Koko. Her positive experiences focus on her individualistic nature. For Melody, it allows her to express her uniqueness through the length, the colors, and the designs. The negative aspect is trying to find the time to do them because she is always busy. en are embracing the concept of extreme length nails without the varying stereotypes. Although we still have some ways to go. Those who continue to grow their nails to very extreme lengths still deal with the bullying stereotypes, reactions, and comments. Being familiar with her sentiments myself, we talked about the personal impact she has felt and witnessed as a participant/creator of an international forum like the Long Nail Beauties Association. It irritates her that people hate or discriminate against something they have so little knowledge of, or do not care for, or cannot do/or relate to. Women capable of growing extreme-length nails, while maintaining a flourishing livelihood should be highly commended. They exhibit the ability to do what many are not capable of doing, regardless of their lifestyle. More than a decade later, how does Melody Wilson feel about X’treme Nailz International establishing this platform for the X’treme Nailz Community? She thinks this is awesome and an accomplishment.
Seeing how the community has evolved and embraced by the entertainment industries has caused acceptance in our everyday social lives. It is amazing! She exclaimed. We intended to build a sisterhood among the sisters, along with a community of supporters. Mr. Fields and X’treme Nailz International is a HUGE respected voice in the community that I think can bring about the sisterhood. A beacon of support that we all seek and genuinely deserve. She went on to express. There are many sisters with extreme nails in the world, doing extraordinary things, not hindered by the growth of their nails, in any fashion. X’treme Nailz International is highlighting these special women of the LNB community Notably, the Entertainment Industry has embraced the new wave of X’treme Nailz styles. Curious about her response as an innovator and one of the initial creators of the forum. Melody explains that Entertainment embraced the “style” of extreme nails once entertainers started implementing it into their artistic creations, particularly in videos. She finds it quite strange, having lived so many years hearing
criticism about the length of her nails, and now seeing it embraced, almost to the fullest extent. She loves it, though. Like most of us familiar with their genres, the comedian Lunelle and “of course” Cardi B. is named.
Like her nails, her life is endlessly evolving, and she is currently on a new spiritual journey to understanding her purpose as a light and star seed in this world.
As for Mel’s’ nails, she prefers black, earth tone colors, blue, and pink. The longest this dynamic force has grown her nails throughout their nearly 3-decade lengthy existence is measured between 5-7 inches. Currently content with keeping her nails at about the 3-inch range, cutting them once a year. Having no signature color(s) to mention, keeping them squared and thin shaped is her favorite style. She does her nails herself and does not trust anyone else to do them. As far as coordinating her nails with clothing. This busy professional said no. Most times, “I’m not able to do my nails as often as I like, I choose a color(s) that tends to go with everything”, eluding to the black, earth tones, blue, and pink mention earlier. Outside of being a nail fashionista, a Life Coach, an advocate against sexual violation, and Public Speaker. She holds a BS in Psychology and a master’s in professional counseling. She has been in the profession for about six years and has helped people all over the world. Her nails have never been a hindrance in the almost 30 years she has been growing them while performing an extensive list of jobs, the majority of which being administrative and predominately involving typing. Once, working as a Key Entry Operator for the USPS. She was the fastest key entry operator, with a 4% error rate. At the time, her nails were about 3-4 inches long. Melody also has been the lead singer for several different bands. For years traveling with various bands, she has performed up and down the east coast from Massachusetts to Georgia. 48 •

Currently, working on her Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis on Cognition and Instruction, she has two books. “The Birth, The Representation, The Celebration of Me”, and “Mel’s Jumpstart to Recovery: A Psychoeducational Workbook” on the recovery of sexual violation, currently available on Amazon. When asked about the positive or negative attention people give to her nails while on stage and business meetings, Mel responded by saying, yes, they always have drawn attention. She assumes both positive and negative, but most notable, Mel would be the last to give an actual assessment, ending the subject by stating. Neither of which affected me. She has been married, raised six children, three daughters, a son and stepson, and one granddaughter. All with extreme-length nails. Which means she had to do hair, cook, and do household chores. One of her favorite sports that she plays is tennis. Like her nails, her life is endlessly evolving, and she is currently on a new spiritual journey
to understanding her purpose as a light and star seed in this world. Melody concluded our time together with this message for those inspired by her innovative forum, the Long Nail Beauties. Yes, my nails will continue this journey with me as well. Again, that is what I love about extreme-length nails and the extreme-length nail community. No matter who you are or who you choose to be. Choose to let no one dictate how you express yourself. I pray that more of our sisters will follow that path.

Her subtle charm and sweet voice escalate into a dramatic effect once her conversation pieces come into focus. Realizing, not everyone can comprehend her choice in growing her fierce nails as a personality trait. The pro element to her nails is their opposite statement of her seemingly meek demeanor. No question, the con is that everyone refuses to understand or accept that we are not nasty or unclean. Ninety-five percent or more women in the community have phobias about cleanliness due to their nails. The extreme nail movement is loved and cherished by this sister of longer-than-usual growth. Explaining how she feels it has created an outlet for women that love long nails and redefines how they are perceived. Excitingly stating, she loves it!

LaWona also shares the irritation she feels about the harsh judgments and discrimination the community endures. Her sentiments on the lack of respect public opinion shows. We are human with beautiful personalities, but most think otherwise. Thank goodness it does not affect her ability to be who she is, allowing her unique self-expression to shine brightly. What statements does she make in her choices of nail artistry?
She loves grays and neutral colors. She was enjoying her unicorn nail recently, a first-time design. The natural length was perfect, and the overlay was exact, for the nail thickness her lifestyle requires. Drawing inspiration from the late track star Flo Jo. Koko from SWV, and X’treme Nailz’ very own, new Ambassador Lena Cole. LaWona feels establishing this platform for the extreme nail(s) community is the best thing, and she is all in! She does not bother to coordinate her clothing style or fashion with her nails and puts no thought into a signature color(s).
They draw attention while conducting a business meeting or consult, and she has become an expert at turning one’s focus back to the business instead of her claws. Who? You might ask, is the nail tech creating her look of unique sophistication? LaWona stated, the best, Lena Cole. With so many entertainers flashing their enhanced nails in the media lately, she feels everyone has the same typical nail stylings. It has had no notable influence on her. Such artistry in nails is just a few miles away for her without concern for public resistance to her
length of choice. LaWona feels they honestly do things we would never do with our nails. Some of the shows and artists make it harder for those of us with naturally long nails. They intentionally produce negative attention by doing things we would never do, generating the notion that we do foolish things, which sheds negative assumptions on longer-lengthed natural nail growers. But there is nothing negative about this long-nailed beauty, and we all look forward to seeing what lengths she will grow. An independent agent for Mary Kay, this young beauty’s possibilities are endless.

What most don't understand is our nails themselves are tools. Your equilibrium is off if one gets broken. What we buy and the uses they have for us comes with ingenuity.
by Edith Graham We go about our days as naturally as anyone else in this community. Schedules, jobs, deadlines, and dreams invade our thoughts and actions during the day like anyone else. There are some visual differences, unorthodox methods, and creative thinking that successfully concludes our days. We do not question one's curiosity or occasional gawking as we go about our lives, although we often forget why. Our nails are as natural for us as their choice of clothing, shoes, and hair. A simple task seems impossible to others like opening doors, which is a twist of the wrist with your nails out of the way. Elongated handles are as simple a sliding our fingers in to flip up the handle, letting it down while still holding it so it does not rip off our nails. We accept the stares and unusual comments and mocking’s we receive while in public, expected to be a spectacle as we lead our daily lives. We utilize items in ways others do not think to do. Our artistic expression is one of adaption based on so 66 •

much more than other's attention. Styling hair and applying make-up is a matter of which handle, or size is best to utilize. Tweezers for lashes and brushes for application, nails our length do not just pop up.
would. We use knives and forks, spoons, and cups, all learning to adapt as our nails grow longer in a natural fashion. Some use the pads on the fingertips to touch surfaces and used more due to the lengths.
I pick up babies and place them securely while knowing the safest way to turn the wrist while securing the child. Most kids love assisting with anything you do around them instinctively because they lovingly protect you out of fascination.
Our knuckles answer phones and push buttons if a stylus isn't near. I type with pencil erasers at a speed that can make you dizzy and most of us can contort our hands to accommodate any situation.
We have accommodating tools for chores around the home, just as anyone would dealing with a mobility issue. Handles are always what makes for easier access. What most don't understand is our nails themselves are tools. Your equilibrium is off if one gets broken. What we buy and the uses they have for us comes with ingenuity. Tweezers are our friends. They are used to pull buttons through shirts, hang earrings and retrieve debit cards from discriminating machines while onlookers prepare to make rude comments for us wasting their time. Tongs of all shapes and sizes are kept in our purses to grab items quickly from tight places and crevices. I use an unbreakable spatula to tuck the covers around the mattress and stretch the fitted sheet to the corners of the bed. Spare credit cards are kept within reach as a tool. When we drop coins or something flat, we use them to lift a corner so we may pick them up. Despite the epic shortage of toilet paper in the early days of the pandemic, we are guilty of using extra toilet paper. The continuing effort to be cleaner than most who concern themselves with our hygiene while more prone to baby wipes aware of how to place them properly for the best effectiveness. We use sponges, brushes, and a never-ending selection of items for bathing, those without long nails tend to forget exist when judging our ability to bathe properly. No shortage of wash clothes, thick and thin. We clean our noses with tissue wrapped around a nail tip and or Q-tips like in our ears as we hope the rest of society
Driving is a matter of positioning and choosing the vehicle that gives us ample space where necessary. We pay attention to the design of door handles. The choices are made with the same considerations as anyone else to suit their individual needs. I do not touch meat and use two-pronged forks, held in positions I require to cut just like anyone else would, without as many germs. People are in awe when I cut up a chicken or slice the ribs or roast. I make some leery about my expertise with knives since I chop veggies like a regular chef despite the nail length. I love to cook despite looking inept in the kitchen. Ground meats get stirred with utensils, a preference I have always had, while patties and meatballs are made in my palms after a spray of Pam to prevent sticking. Meatloaves are rolled and shaped perfectly with a spatula before baking. Unlike most who critique us, I use bleach in my dishwater. While cutting meats, I have a giant bowl on the side to dip my nails if they make contact to prevent contamination. We use brushes of varied sizes to scrub underneath. Many of us are germaphobes questioning the hygiene of those that call us nasty. I speak up when seated in tight inadequate spaces in restaurants. We expect situations created to make a spectacle of us for amusement or entertainment. Most of us do not mind letting you know if it appears your actions are intentional, no matter the situation. Discrimination and prejudice are rampant, and you never know how they might occur. TREME NAILS MAGAZINE • 67

Smiley Nails n August 14th, 2017 Ayde Lunez took her last breath and transitioned peacefully amongst her family and friends. For those of us who knew her personally her handle was “Smiley Nails”. Ayde Lunez was an effervescent, caring, and positive person. Although we never met in person (except for an occasional call, we generally interfaced through FB, Twitter, and IM’s). She was one of the first X’treme Nail Divas I befriended back in 2012. Always open and extremely shy I regularly bounced my X’treme Nailz International ideas off her. Her response was always “don’t talk about it just do it.” It was Ayde’s passion for her beautifully curved acrylic stilettos that originally caught my attention. She was one of the first “Queen of Claws” to grace my Internationally Fly Fashion Nails (IFFN) page on FB. She still holds the record, for the most appearances and pics on that site. She really enjoyed the concept of
having a non-judgmental platform for all the X’treme Nail Ladies. Ayde was always supportive and inspirational regarding services that can benefit women of all colors and nationalities. After Ayde found out that I lost my mother in June 2017 (she texted and call me to express her condolences). Aydes was the type of person that always put others before herself. Aydes was also an avid traveler (she loved doing weekend getaways). It just does not seem fair, that someone with such a zest for life had to transition so soon. When Aydes passed, it was absolutely a gut punch. Knowing that the world would no longer see that beautiful megawatt smile. “Smiley Nails” will forever be missed by family, friends, followers, and the X’treme Nailz Community. My only regret is that she did not live long enough (to see the platform she encouraged me to pursue, come into fruition). R.I.P. Smiley Nails.
