Welcome To New Orleans and Southern Decadence

A

s the 2009 leaders of Southern Decadence, Grand Marshals XXXV, Paloma and Tittie Toulouse welcome all our visitors to our wonderful city and especially to our celebration of gay life, music, and culture, Southern Decadence XXXVIII. New Orleans is a magical city with so much to do it is impossible to list it all. Take advantage, during your stay, of our world renowned food and music. Stroll through the French Quarter and see architecture that has stood since the forming of our country. Stand on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River and see paddlewheel boats from days gone by still gliding majestically on the river. A trip to New Orleans is a trip to her past, present and future. Enjoy all she has to offer. Being chosen as Southern Decadence Grand Marshal is the highest honor in our LGBT community. Our predecessors have built a tradition of involvement in the community coupled with a tireless energy in raising funds for local charities. Southern Decadence has evolved from a local party of a few friends to a party of literally tens of thousands of visitors. Without the help and support of our sponsors, visitors, locals, bar owners and police (the best in the nation!!!) it would not have survived or flourished as it has. For all the support, we thank you. You all hold a special place in our hearts. Be safe, be sweet and most of all, have a FABULOUS Southern Decadence!

the "official" dish ...from 4 The 8pm concert, entitled Incantations, will feature the LGBA Mass Wind Ensemble, an orchestra of a hundred and seventy-five musicians drawn from twentyeight cities: Atlanta, Albuquerque, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus (Ohio), Dallas, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Indianapolis, Lexington (KY) , Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Montgomery, New York City, Palm Springs, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland (Maine, Rochester, San Francisco, St. Louis, Seattle, Washington, DC, and West Palm Beach. “The LGBA convenes annually in a city that has a member band,” said DecaFest Producer Roberts Batson. “New Orleans does not have a lesbian and gay band, so this is the first time in the organization’s history that they will not follow their tradition. The South Florida Wind Ensemble won the bid to host the 2009 conference and then agreed to bring it to New Orleans as a part of DecaFest.” Adam DeRosa, President of the South Florida Musical Guild explained, “We understand hurricane devastation and how

important tourism is to both our economies, so when we heard that DecaFest was created to raise money for local HIV/ AIDS and LGBT community organizations in post-Katrina New Orleans, we wanted to help out. Our musicians are really looking forward to performing in a city so famous for music.” In addition to their concert, a unit of almost two hundred musicians, drum majors and flag team members will march in the Southern Decadence Parade following Southern Decadence Grand Marshals XXXV Tittie Toulouse and Paloma. “Imagine what a fantastic addition that will be to the Sunday afternoon revelry,” Batson added. The LGBA is fresh from another history-making achievement. On January 20, the group marched in the Obama inaugural parade, the first LGBA organization to participate in a U. S. presidential inaugural parade. The DecaFest schedule includes entertainment, tours, speakers, and culinary events for locals and visitors in New Orleans Labor Day week. It has been produced annually since 2006 to support community organizations and to increase

LGBT tourism to New Orleans.

Decadent Ducks Return to Southern Decadence for 12th Year

H

urricane Gustav put a damper on the 2008 Southern Deca-dence festivities and managed to blow a dedicated group of “ducks” out of New Orleans, but just barely. The Decadent Ducks, a gay travel and social group, will return to the French Quarter for their 12th year over the Labor Day weekend. The Ducks, led by Bennington, Vermont resident Troy Richardson, anticipate over 350 group members to attend the annual celebration this year. “We stayed until the very latest possible minute last year,” Troy explains. “We hated to go, but we had to make sure everyone got out of the city safely.” More than just a travel group, the Decadent Ducks have evolved into a close network of friends from all over the world, and they credit New Orleans for fostering and inspiring their spirit of camaraderie and friendship. With last year’s events cut short, the group is looking forward to this year more than ever. “There’s definitely a greater sense of anticipation this year,” Troy says, with a smile. “We didn’t get the full experience last year, so we’re hoping to make up for it. I didn’t even get my beignets and cafe au lait last year! Missing out really makes you appreciate this city and all it has to offer. We can’t wait to get back!” In addition to various events and parties scheduled throughout the weekend, the Decadent Ducks are putting their numbers to good use by joining Southern Decadence XXXVI Grand Marshals Tittie Toulouse and Paloma in raising money for Food For Friends. The Food For Friends Program of NO/AIDS Task Force has been supplying groceries and home-delivered meals to HIV-infected and affected individuals in the greater New Orleans area for 12 years. The Ducks will host a silent auction and raffle during the course of the weekend and will donate all proceeds to the program. “The people of New Orleans have always welcomed us

with open arms and treated us with tolerance and respect,” Troy explains. “I can’t stress enough how important that is, especially in this day and age, when the gay community seems to be under attack so often. That means a lot. We’ve been very lucky, and we’re really excited to be able to give something back.” The 700 Club (700 Burgundy Street) will be acting as the official bar of the Decadent Ducks all weekend. To learn more about the Decadent Ducks, or to join in the fun, visit their official website at www.decadentducks.com.

the "official" dish ...from 20 and hors d’oeuvres. “We’re hard at work to coordinate the first ever nationwide day of action focused on LGBT community centers,” said Terry Stone, CenterLink’s Executive Director. “Over 40,000 people visit the over 180 community centers each week and centers have more direct access to the LGBT community than any other organization. Centers are the real backbone of the LGBT movement, and we are excited to highlight that work through Center Awareness Day.” The theme of this year’s LGBT Center Awareness Day is “My Community Center Changed My Life,” showcasing the vital role that community centers play in the health, empowerment, and unity of all LGBT communities. At the first annual LGBT Center Awareness Day, the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans will open its doors as an opportunity for all members of the LGBT community and its allies to become better acquainted with directors of the board, the center’s members and volunteers, and the various groups that meet at the center. Also during this social event, the community can learn about all the exciting changes the new committees of the LGBT Community Center envision for the future of the center, and learn how to be a part of the center’s growth by volunteering, becoming a member, and/or joining one of the center’s various committees. The committees to be represented at the event are: Volunteer, Membership, Fundraising and Events, Public Relations and Marketing, Programs and Grants, and Library and Archives.

LGBT Center Awareness Day also has a civil rights equality push on a national scope, with an organized effort for municipal, county, and state proclamations honoring the day and the work that LGBT centers do, as well as efforts to get individuals everywhere engaged in “personal awareness actions,” ranging from wearing a button to visiting a center. “Currently, the New Orleans LGBT Community Center is a meeting place for several gay men’s and transgender groups. It also has a library and resource lists for doctors, lawyers, therapists, dentists and other professionals that serve the community.. The vision of the Board of Directors is to expand greatly upon these services with the community’s support,” said Darrin Duplissey, LGBT Community center of New Orleans. Co-Chair Crystal Little states, “It is the Center’s objective to become the “Center” of the LGBT community in New Orleans.” The Center will have directors of the board, members and volunteers available to give tours of the center and answer any questions about the New Orleans center. Representatives of the center will also be available to answer any questions about the mission and purpose of LGBT centers and what the center can offer. The LGBT Community Center of New Orleans will also be accepting new memberships and volunteers during the social mixer. Details about LGBT Center Awareness Day are available at www.mycenterlink.org and more information about the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans and this event can be accessed at www.lgbtccno.org/CAD.

(Women In Search of Excellence) Women at Delgado Community College and the New Orleans Craft Mafia, Handmade Nation - a new film by Faythe Levine which documents the rise of DIY and the new wave of art, craft and design - will have its New Orleans premiere Friday, September 18 at 7pm. Starting in 2006, Levine traveled to 15 cities, logged over 19,000 miles and interviewed more than 80 individuals who are part of a tightly knit crafting community which exists both online through websites, blogs and online stores as well as within local communities around the world in the form of craft fairs, independent boutiques, modern day knitting circles and networking groups like the Craft Mafia.. These individuals merge traditional handcrafting techniques with a modern DIY (do it yourself) ethos, combining his-

torical crafting techniques and artisan skills with 21st century aesthetics, punk, politics, feminism and art. Fueled by the common thread of creating, the film explores a burgeoning art community that is based on creativity, determination, and [continued on 24]

tember 20th. Thousands will gather beneath the oaks in Audubon Park beginning at 8am and then join hands and Walk at 10 in an impressive display of awareness and solidarity in the face of this terrible epidemic. The campaign is being supported by Merck & Co., Inc. and aims to combat the stigma associated with HIV by engaging people in thoughtful conversation about the condition. Jack has been living with HIV for 20 years now, and through Living Positive By Design, he highlights the importance for people living with HIV to have a positive outlook on life while effectively managing their disease. The campaign was launched in the fall of 2008 and has visited Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, Houston and Chicago. Walkers and supporters are encouraged to meet in Audubon Park at 8:00 am for registration. The WALK will kickoff at 10am and will proceed down historic Magazine Street to Napoleon Avenue and then will turn onto Prytania Street as we head back into Audubon Park. S

o Southern Decadence is once again upon us, and it is shaping up to be one of the best years ever. With Paloma and Tittie Toulouse at the helm, this celebration is going to be like none we have ever seen before. I know the events have been listed all over the Ambush, but I want to give you an insider’s scoop to Decadence. So here is a behind the scenes look at some of the events and sights you should definitely not miss at this year's festivities. Keep in mind, these are not all of them, so refer to Ambush for a full schedule of events (page 60). Let's start with Glitz: The Art of Female Impersonation. This Elias Production will be performing at Harrah’s Casino in their theatre on Thursday, September 3rd and Friday, September 4th. The show features the talents of Bianca Del Rio, Teryl-Lynn Foxx, Lisa Beaumann, Lawanda Jackson, Cristina Cayne and Blanche Debris. This show delivers nonstop entertainment with Bianca as your emcee. And, while you are there definitely try your hand at some of the gaming tables. The hottest boys in the city can be found at Harrah’s. Here’s to getting lucky. Next up, at midnight on Thursday, September 3rd at Café Lafitte’s will be the Dick of Decadence Contest. The title pretty much sums everything up, so I do not think you need an explanation from me. Suffice to say, it will be the best $5 you spend all weekend. On Friday, another event to attend if you want to meet lots of hot eligible locals is the Halloween Host Party at Whiskey Blue at the W Hotel on Poydras Street from 5pm - 7pm. This is an ideal way to mix and mingle with locals and find out about another big gay holiday in the city. Get as much information as you can, because after you have a blast at Southern Decadence this year, you will definitely want to return at Halloween. If you are Lady Bunny fan like I am, then you are In luck, because she will be performing live at 8pm upstairs at the Bourbon Pub. If you have not seen her show, then make it a point to check her out. She is hysterical. And, at 9pm on Friday, the oldest Southern Decadence tradition is the Grand Marshals Drag Show at Tubby’s Golden Lantern. I truly do believe that every drag queen in the Gulf South performs at this show. If Jerry Lewis held a drag telethon, this would be it. But it is a fun tradition and should definitely be one of your stops on Friday night. On Saturday, there are several events that involve lots of hot boys in the lets say next to nothing. One of them is at JohnPaul’s, Decadence of the Roman Gods. A body painting event until 3pm that is sure to be unique and have lots of skin. Then at 5pm there is a pool party at the Country Club with Playgirl.com and BrokeStraightBoys.com. This is one of my favorite porn websites. Talk about your hot boys next door. Well, if you lived next to a trailer park, then maybe, but nonethe-

less these guys are still hot. Also on Saturday at 5 p.m. will be the 6th Annual Bourbon Street Extravaganza hosted by Napoleon’s Itch. This year will have an excellent line up of local and national celebrities such as Deborah Cox and L.A. Modeling Star Geovanny. Come and get a great spot to witness all the decadent fun. If you are still moving by the time Sunday comes around, you need to hit this little known event. The Friendly Bar always hosts the Southern Decadence Grand Marshals Brunch and make-up party. This is always a great event to attend and a good way to meet more locals. It starts at 12noon but I always get there early to start my celebrating. Now we come to the moment we have all been waiting for the 35th Southern Decadence Parade. Get in costume and march or just enjoy the parade by watching it from one of the many gay bars on the route. Either as a spectator or participant, you will have fun guaranteed. The parade kicks off at Tubby’s Golden Lantern at 2pm. Last but not least, do not forget the Official Southern Decadence Bead Toss at 4pm from the Ambush Balcony at 828 Bourbon Street. For an entire listing of events, check out page 60 in this issue or go to SouthernDecadence.COM.

T

here are two upcoming events that will definitely be of interest to people in the community. The first one is on Friday, September 11 in the 4th Floor Clubhouse at the New Orleans Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots for Liberation Through Education’s first annual gala/silent auction fund-raiser. Tickets begin at $30 with patron levels beginning at $100 for a night of fun, music, food, drinks, and great silent auction items. Patron party will be held from 6:30pm8pm with doors opening to other guests at 8pm. The event will last until 11pm. For more information on this worthy fund-raiser go to www.liberationthrougheducation.com. This organization impact on the lives of thousands of New Orleans area children is enough of a reason to donate the money. And, if you haven‘t been to the newly renovated Fair Grounds, you are missing a great piece of New Orleans history. The facility is spectacular and is an ideal spot for a party. The event includes excellent silent auction items and food from great restaurants such as Acme Oyster House and Galatoire’s Restaurant. Entertainment will be The Revivalists. For more information, please contact Chad Stelly at 504.236.4680 or Carolyn Stowe at 504.258.7032. The next event is Divas & Drag at the Bourbon Pub on September 14 from 810:30pm. This event is sponsored by the NO/AIDS Task Force and all proceeds from the event will go to the Annual NO/ AIDS Walk. There is a $7 cover and $2 drink specials. I performed at this event

last year and had a blast. Yes, I did drag, as scary as that may sound. I was Elphaba from Wicked and did a “show stopping” rendition of Defying Gravity. How did I do? Well, I can safely say that I will not be shaking my green buns on Broadway anytime soon.

A

ward winning historian, biographer, playwright and gay rights activist, Martin Duberman has completed the third installment of his life story in Waiting To Land. This memoir joins his previous two, Cures and Midlife Queer. Duberman interweaves diary entries, letters and reflections from 1985 through 2008. On the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, this book is a rich exploration on what it means to be queer in post-Stonewall America. Duberman is a very radical voice but says things we need to hear. With sensitivity, he explores the idea of gays being in a “double bind.” They want to be accepted by mainstream America, but still do not want to sacrifice their uniqueness and culture. A professor of History Emeritus at Lehman College and the Graduate School of the City University of New York, Duberman was the founder and first director of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies at the CUNY Graduate School. He has authored over twenty books and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Waiting to Land is a must read for not only the gay community, but anyone interested in understanding the difference and struggle for true equality. To find out more about this book, go to our favorite gay and lesbian book store FAB located at 600 Frenchman Street. Also congratulations are in order. FAB just turned 31 years old. Otis, keep up the good work in bringing gay and lesbian literature to the city. For more information on Waiting to Land or any of Duberman’s other titles, contact FAB at 504.947.3600. If they do not have it yet, they can order it for you. just got back from a another wonderful conference in Pensacola, Florida for the HENA which stands for the Hospitality Education and Networking Association. The New Orleans hospitality community showed up in force at this fun conference that mixes education and networking in a fun beach environment. The conference was held at the Hilton property on the Pensacola beach, a very gay friendly resort with a great staff. The theme of the conference was New Orleans: Back to Basics. We had an Eighties party on the beach as a kickoff party where the guests and the staff dressed in costume. We recreated Pontchartrain Beach, Bali Hai and the Zephyr. I was president of the organization this year, and had to host private receptions in my suite every night. The theme for my suite was Southern Decadence. Gay beads were distributed to all guests while guests partied under a boa chandelier to the wee hours of the morning. Bars close too early in Florida. But I did get a chance to experience the gay scene in Pensacola. If you have not gone there, do it. I went to Emerald City and they were having an amateur strip off emceed by the wonderful drag performer Ebony St. Clair. This was such a fun event and had over ten contestants. My personal favorite was Luis from Alabama who decided to join the HENA group back in my suite after the bars closed down. I

I

also got to meet Anna Rexia another fabulous personality in the city who gives new meaning to the phrase “party monster.” He hosts some of the most popular parties in the city that bring major DJs from across the country. The following night he was hosting Disco Apocalypto with Superstar DJ Keoke spinning, who was a resident DJ for Limelight and worked legendary parties for the likes of Lou Reed, Debbie Harry and the B-52’s. Some amazing parties happening in the sleepy little town of Pensacola. Next door to Emerald City is the Other Side a more subdued martini bar, but not any less fun. Pensacola may not have as many bars as New Orleans, but they make up for it in fun events and great people. You should also know there is a military base in Pensacola, so there is no shortage of hot men with crew cuts. In fact I met many of them that weekend. But then again, if you don’t ask, I won’t tell.

T

wo weeks ago I attended a wonderful rooftop party at Julia Place in the Warehouse District. One of my good friends, Marvin Andrade turned forty and he had a wonderful surprise party thrown for him by his partner Robbie. You know it is going to be quite the night when you are greeted at the entrance of the party by a Patron Tequila shot. Well it went only uphill from there. Marvin celebrated surrounded by a multitude of friends, family, coworkers and professional acquaintances. There was great Latin food, the music was pumping and best of all I got to see all of my friends and meet some great new people. Jello shots in syringes were the party favors of choice and Marvin had a great time. It truly was a wonderful night on the rooftop celebrating a good friend’s birthday, congrats to Robbie for hosting such a great party. The next day I told someone about the party and he asked how did I feel when I turned 40. He was lamenting that being 40 in the gay community was tantamount to being a leper. Well, after I picked up my jaw from the floor, I called another gay friend of mine and asked his opinion. Although, he did not share the exact same words as my other friend, the feeling was the same. WTF! Did I miss a memo somewhere. Life in the gay community ends at 40! What a load of crap and if anyone ever tells you that, you have my permission to smack them into reality. Are you kidding me, really, I cannot believe some people actually buy into this. Now I do agree, that when you reach a certain age, maybe you should not be donning Abercrombie and Fitch outfits. I actually think they should be alarms on those clothing items that go off when someone over fifty years old tries them on. Baby, aging gracefully is the way to go. Thirty year olds can barely pull off those shirts, nevertheless a sixty year old. But the best is when someone says you are so old, when they find out your age. Well what the hell are their choices, do they think they are going to skip the age. Now granted some of these twinks will OD before the age so they have that going for them. But if death does not seem like a viable option to you, then remember life gets better every year, you learn more, you grow and you experience more. So never feel bad about growing older. Trust me the best is yet to come. Have a wonderful and safe Southern Decadence! See you on the streets!

Rest & Play

O

nly three more weeks of what the doctor calls bed rest. What that means to me is enjoying the breezes and mild temperatures out on the patio with Ray Bates and Randy Trahan or driving with them to Dot’s for breakfast or attending Gay Prom with Julie Thompson or visiting the Ambush office for a change of pace. I’m even making plans with Dr. Amy to walk over to the Golden Lantern to see the Southern Decadence Parade since she is living in the Doll House on Royal. I’m a little embarrassed by what bed rest has done to me. For example, I stay up or get up for 11pm so I can watch Big Brother After Dark for three hours. Since there is a Gay man in the final five, I am watching to make sure he gets fair treatment. One night recently he was sitting outside with all the other house guests, and he was being grilled about Gay sex — as in how do you do it, positions, how it feels, etc. Hey, you heterosexual morons, if it didn’t feel good, we wouldn’t do it. We give oral sex the same way heterosexuals do only we’re better at it. That’s my take on the subject. When one girl sighed, “oh, you’re so cute, it is ashamed that you’re Gay. You should give a woman a try, at least, once to see if you like it,” I started screaming at the TV. You should try a woman once, you stupid bitch, I yelled at her — maybe we could turn you. Being bright is not one of the requirements for being on this show. If you are dumb, you seem to do better. And you have to look good in a bikini since you are expected to run around with next to nothing covering your body. The Gay man, Kevin, has been in a relationship for I think he said 9 years; maybe it was 9 months. No, he said years so I guess the 9 is incorrect. He is only about 24 so he would have been 15 at the time of commitment. It could happen, I guess. Rip and Marsha were only 21 when they made their commitment. It was love at first sight or fight — I don’t remember the story. They have just celebrated another anniversary this month. August is a busy month. Like Ray and me, Rip is also a Virgo. Another lovely restful event is attending the theatre with a group from Christ the Liberator Church. There will be 12 of us going to see the Elton John musical. We are supporting one of our local Mardi Gras krewes. There is a lot to be said about this bed rest order. I’m feeling great; I do hurt a little but that’s all in the healing process. I’m getting stronger, and that means I can stay out longer and do more. If I had the money, we’d be going out to dinner and doing light shopping once a day. Shopping is a downfall. Even at the Dollar General Store, I managed to spend $69 in one visit. How symbolic is that? Of course, one of the joys of shopping there is being able to make fun of so many strange, straight people, especially the ones with children. That is

also why we love Dot’s. What’s that? Ridiculing those less fortunate (straight) people isn’t kind or loving, you say. OH, Mary, get a grip. As if you haven’t done it and then pretended like you are all sweetness and light. This is just payback for all the years and even today when they make fun of us or vote against our well-being. In Louisiana, we have truly earned the right. I have to stop this fussing because I was told not to let stress upset me. Happy thoughts are the order of the day. So I’m thinking of something silly and fun to wear for Southern Decadence. I’m also thinking about getting involved with the Forum for Equality so that I can do interviews for the mayor’s race. I may live in Republican Metairie but my heart is in Liberal New Orleans. Have you read or heard about Forum’s activities? They have taken up the state wide need for Gay political activism. I, for one, am very grateful for their efforts. Since the fall of LAGPAC, Forum has grown and become a strong voice for the GLBT community. There was a time when they were too Conservative. Today both the Board and membership are more balanced. Between the Forum and PFLAG, I believe that the best is being done to educate the GLBT and straight communities. PFLAG is making great efforts to reach parents, teachers and counselors. It is our goal to make schools safe for Gay teens. It is our desire to see bright Gay students get the education they desire. Hillary was right, it does take a village. Her husband was right too. A bj anyplace, anytime is not a bad thing. Women would understand that better if it were easier for them to enjoy it or if they had the company of Ray and Randy everyday talking about it. It has gotten to the point where none of my neighbors will look me in the eye but they will stand outside my privacy fence to listen. Gay men have such naughty and fun stories to tell. And, of course, none of the three of us know how to speak softly. The old maid next door giggles when she sees me. I just smile and giggle back at her. Don’t forget to wish Winston and Stewart Butler a Happy Birthday when you see them during Southern Decadence weekend. With the passing of so many of our older and grander GLBT community members, we need to enjoy and remember those who are still with us and can teach us so much about our past and what to expect in our future. I hope to see many of you at SD. I am very excited about getting out again. Until next time, I wish you all good health. I know first-hand that is the most blessed gift.

HIV/AIDS EMERGENCY ALERT!

I

don’t usually use my column to plead causes, and especially not on the most widely read issue of the year, but I was in a meeting yesterday with Vicky Weeks, the director of Belle Reve (an assisted living facility for people living with HIV/AIDS) and was horrified to discover that we are only weeks away from losing The Ryan White CARE act, which, if congress and The Senate does not act, will expire on September 30th. This federal legislation provides the money for the ADAP scheme as well as for a wide range of HIV related healthcare, and its failure would be a disaster of biblical proportions. It is now that we need to act, and telephone congressman Cao, Congressman Scalise and Senators Landrieu and Vitter to urge them vigorously to support and expedite renewal of this bill. Even a brief interruption of funding (and therefore medication) could lead to drug resistance developing which will cause major health problems even if the medication is later resumed. To most of the readers of Ambush! I won’t need to lay out the importance of ADAP and Ryan White funding, and it will be obvious what a disaster it would be if it is interrupted, even for a short time! Ryan White funding has saved countless lives, and continues to help over half a million people in the United States. Last year the total allocation to The City of New Orleans was $7,669,652, money we could never have found from elsewhere. New York City received almost $112 million, along with cities throughout the country. It is vital that legislators receive testimony as to the importance of these services in ordinary people’s lives, and understand that the withdrawal of these funds will not mean just inconvenience, and a bit of political brinksmanship, but will mean a public health disaster, and ultimately, deaths. There is a chance this may all have been magically resolved in the few days between me writing this and it appearing in print, but the risk to public health is graver than the risk of writing a redundant article! Lethargy is a dangerous thing when it comes to politics; too often we assume that something is so ridiculous, or so wicked it could never happen – then it happens! We assume that legislation is some obviously essential that it is never at risk, or that a new bill is so discriminatory that it will never get through – time and again such happy assumptions are proved wrong. In the last few months I have met with Senator Landrieu’s staff twice about ongoing LGBT law reform, and the one thing that I have taken from those meetings is how much politicians respond to stimulus! It is telephone calls, emails and letters that prod politicians into action and these are the things they use to judge depth of feeling in their constituencies. We as a community are known for our lethargy, and it is no coincidence that we seem to always end up at the bottom of the list when it comes to rights and reforms. Let’s make sure that EVERYONE knows how important the health of our HIV positive brothers and sisters is to us, and ensure that Ryan White funding continues for a long time to come! Senator Mary Landrieu, Hale Boggs Federal Building 500 Poydras Street, Room 1005, New Orleans, LA 70130, Voice: 504.589.2427 Senator David Vitter, 2800 Veterans Blvd., Suite 201, Metairie, LA 70002, Main: 504.589.2753 Congressman Cao, 4640 So. Welcome, Welcome, Welcome

W

elcome to all the visitors that are in town to partake of this festive occasion we here in New Orleans call, Southern Decadence, or to all in the know, Gay Mardi Gras. Yes, it’s that time when after the long, hot summer that we want to go out and play, and what a better time than almost exactly six months from the other Mardi Gras. That’s right, the creatures in the swamp get a little restless and have to have a big old long weekend to let go and have a parade and all kinds of “treats” happening before the cool winds are upon us. And what a better time than on Labor Day Weekend! With that said I must warn you that you must pace yourself and not try to partake of too many things at one time or you will surely have that old Voodoo spell come upon you and you won’t remember what, who, or even if you were here to begin with. We want to tell everyone that you must pace yourself and not try to drink all that you “think” you can, remember that even though there is much happening, you cannot be everywhere and do everything. To maintain yourself, you must remember to eat, and sleep like you normally would if you were at home. As you know New Orleans is open 24 hours a day and therefore you can find food, and drink every hour of the day. Try and set yourself to attend as many of the events as possible as every bar is having something special so you can pick and choose what you want to see. Also, we have to warn you that any nudity or public urination will most definitely subject you to being arrested, and just like for Mardi Gras, that means that if you get arrested during this holiday weekend, you will not be able to get out until after all of this is over, which means Tuesday. That’s right, since all government offices will be closed for the long weekend, you will be in jail for awhile. By the time you get out, you and your cell mate, Bubba, will probably be married and you’ll have a baby on the way. Explain that to the folks back home. Remember, don’t do anything here that you wouldn’t want your folks to see or find out about back home. And with that said, “Have a good time and a safe holiday!?!"

drag 101 by Ida Slapter E-mail: ida_slapter00@yahoo.com our old Aunty Ida here, and has she been watching you as I promised. Now I hate to say this but, some of you have not been reading what I have been writing, or you just don’t care about what you look like or the overall picture that you present. I have been around to some of the shows and several contests/pageants, and my dears, shame, shame, shame. I fully realize that this is not the best drag friendly type of weather, however, some of you are just not very adept at taking your appearance very seriously.

I never thought that I would see the day when I would go to a contest/pageant and see ANY of the contestants WITHOUT panty hose on stage. Obviously, you have no idea what that looks like from the audience, let alone what kind of an image it gives you. Very UNPROFESSIONAL !!!!! I was truly taken back, and wanted to run up and throw a tablecloth around you to save you from the embarrassment. Not only did this happen at a contest/pageant, but also at one of the shows that I attended, where one of the guest performers came out, gorgeous hair, make-up, and dress, but right in front of God and everyone, did not have on any panty hose, and to top it off, she saw fit not to even shave her legs. Now what is that about ???!!??? While we’re on the subject, what is this I am seeing, again at not one, not two, but three contest/pageant’s where one of the contestants has made an appearance with rips and tears in their outfits, and yes, their panty hose. How amazing is it that someone would want a “title” so bad, that they would practice and practice, then proceed to go out in front of an audience with an outfit that was not perfect ? I can understand not being able to get a new outfit every time you make an appearance, however, I cannot understand not keeping your things in repair at all times. There is absolutely no excuse for this !!! When I started doing this column, it was my intention to try and help all of you drags and dragsters to improve your image and to give you hints on how to be able to get the look that you were dreaming of for your “drag” persona. As I told you, I have been through all of this and it is not easy, it takes persistence and determination. But, if you don’t care what image you portray to others, then I’m afraid there is nothing that old Aunty Ida can do to help you.

Well, my little Princess Prunella has to go for a walk, she’s sitting with her legs crossed, so I’m assuming that’s a hint. Will be out wandering for Southern Decadence and watching what is happening, and I’ll be watching you. P.S. Panty hose were made for the purpose to make women’s legs look better and give them that glow that you can’t get without them. (And only wear nude to the top pantyhose, not control top.)

Around Town

R

ehearsals for the 2009-2010 season for the New Orleans Gay Men's Chorus begin in Baton Rouge on Thursday, September 10th at 7:30pm at the University Presbyterian Church on Dalrymple Drive. The chorus rehearses each Thursday in Baton Rouge from 7:30 - 9:30pm and once a month (on a Sunday afternoon) in the New Orleans area. If you have been thinking about joining the chorus - or just enjoy singing - this is an opportunity for you to participate in this endeavor. The next concert is the 2009 Christmas Concert, which will be held in New Orleans on Friday, December 18 and in Baton Rouge on Saturday, December 19. For more information, contact Kevin Serrin at ccabatonrouge@ccabatonrouge.org. Splash has a lot of great things planned for September. On the 4th, they will have another Retro Rewind, which will have lots of 80s and 90s music and also a chance for you to play plinko. A Tiger Pep Rally will take place on September 11, the first of the season, so you need to be there to support the LSU Tigers. America’s favorite game show (The Price is Right) is scheduled for September 18, and on the 25th, it’s wet boxer time again with super sexy guys in the barest of attire and trying for the big money. George’s continues to be the best venue in town for karaoke. They also have those cool dudes prancing around on the bar to entice you into that erotic fantasy world. Overall, it is just a great place to have a drink, meet friends, gaze at some of the hottest bartenders around this part of the country, and a fun place to enjoy some nice shows. Just remember, George’s is the place with the personal touch. A big (and especially nice) event has taken place at Hound Dogs. Let’s just say it was a joyous occasion. I loved the invitation. It stated “come see what’s hangin’” and that caught my attention immediately. It was not what you think, so get your thinking in the correct mode, sweeties. Joy had her first art show at this Main Street establishment, and it really turned out nicely for this sweetheart. In addition to the artwork, there was great camaraderie from the locals who came out to support her and her work, and there were other giftables for sale as well as some nice snacks. As usual, Joy had the place decorated festively for the occasion. A new lesbian-owned restaurant located downtown on Lafayette Street, directly across from the Hilton Hotel, is worth checking out. According to their website, Dalton’s is a full-service bar and live music venue. The building located at 244 Lafayette Street is thriving to the sounds of great live music and good times. Stop in for a cool adult beverage, listen to Baton Rouge’s finest bands and see why Dalton’s is one of downtown’s favorite destinations. Dalton’s setup is also conducive to hosting committee and general meetings.

The entire downtown area is a great place to spend time when you are out and about. Nights are different now from what they used to be. There is actually some activity going on, and all those empty buildings are a thing of the past. It is rather nice to see so many great restaurants, coffee shops, and bars for the pleasure of those who dare to be different. I really think everyone should take note of our only classy European-style coffee shop. It is such a welcome little shop, called Strand’s, with a lot of atmosphere in this old building on Laurel Street, a block off the River Road. The coffee is fantastic, and those wonderful snacks are just not found anywhere else in the city. Let’s hope this one stays around for a long time. They are only open now from Tuesday through Friday, but discussions are under way to change this in the near future. Try it out. I think you will agree with me that this is simply an outstanding place to gather for coffee and good friendships. If you enjoy Mexican food, you have two delightful places to hang out. El Rio Grande Restaurant on Airline Highway is very gay friendly, and lots of happy people dine there. Mestizo’s on Acadian is gayowned and really a great place to sip one or two. Even though the two are both Mexican, the food menus are quite different. A good place to buy unusual gifts is Nature’s Treasures in the Circa 1859 complex on Government Street. While there, you can visit other shops and dine at Yvette’s little restaurant. The atmosphere is great, and the complex covers most of the block. It’s just a different and enjoyable place to add to your schedules.

Important Meeting

T

he recent LGBT community planning meeting was a huge success. Nearly 40 people braved the thunderstorms and traffic to come together, discuss issues, and offer suggestions for the future of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organization and activities in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Some meeting highlights: The crowd in attendance was surprisingly diverse, with excellent representation by gender, age, race, ethnicity, skills and interest. Everyone felt that a formal organization (or multiple organizations) representing LGBT people in greater Baton Rouge is necessary and important. An appropriate organizational structure needs to be researched and identified to meet the diverse needs of the community. Renewed leadership with fresh ideas and perspectives, representing the diversity of the community, is needed. Well-prepared, professionallytrained, articulate spokespeople should be identified to speak on behalf of the community when approached by the media, elected officials, and the public. Communication across the many

different LGBT groups in the Baton Rouge area and the state needs to be organized, coordinated and consistent. Past obstacles should not prevent success moving forward. The need to find ways to build upon and sustain the energy and enthusiasm generated at this meeting was pointed out, thus making participation fun and rewarding. The most significant outcome of this meeting was the creation of four committees that will pursue specific objectives and report back to the next communitywide forum, which will be held in September. The four committees are: Organization Structure, Communications/Marketing/Public Relations, Education and Advocacy, and Outreach and Recruitment.

People Pleasures

I

really need to get together with Gerry and Luther again for dinner soon. We have all been so busy that we just haven’t even had time for pizza. It would be nice to add that sexy and gorgeous Jeremy to the menu - oops gathering. I do believe that this is one of the sexiest guys I’ve seen around in quite some time. When you put him beside Luther, you have the greatest pair of book ends possible - two absolutely beautiful studs - and really nice guys. As you can see, I’m in deep lust - again. I’m hoping to run into a lot of friends at Decadence this year. I know quite a few guys who are planning to join in the fun in the Crescent City. I can only hope that I get [continued on 43]

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

S

orry that my column will be a little short this week, but I have been suffering with a case of bronchitis. I was at a local, unnamed bar, which was having a show and they had on the fog machine, and needless to say I breathed in a whole fog bank and filled my lungs with all that stuff it didn’t need. Then the next day, got caught in the rain and went into another bar and it was so cold, I thought I was in a meat locker. Everything shrunk up so small, and my nipples stood out, I thought I had a sex change. It took me 10 days of not going anywhere to come back to normal, whatever that is !?! So have relied on my good friends to tell me what has been happening.

Queen of Rampart Pageant

A

ccording to Rikki Redd, the Queen of Rampart Street Pageant went as well as could be expected considering there were only 2 contestants: Passion Armani Cassidine, and Mercedes Ellis Loreal. Even though the pageant started late, it was a fight to the finish and much gnashing of teeth, before the winner was announced. Rikki Redd, Miss Starlight 2009, entertained the audience and Miss Jaded Jade was the Emcee for the evening. Last year's winner, Queen of Rampart Street 2008, Tahtiana, also entertained and gave up her crown. The contestants went through the regular categories, presentation, evening gown, talent and Q&A. The judges for the evening were : Miss D, Kelly and Aletha. I don’t want to say they were the “judges from hell”, but, they made the girls go through their paces and earn every point. When it finally came to the end of the pageant, and the winner was announced, the new Queen of Rampart Street 2009 was Mercedes Ellis Loreal. Congratulations to Mercedes!

Drag Survivor - Week 3

A

nd then there were eight (8), and as in any reality show, the claws came out and the bitchiness begins. This could very easily

be something you would see on TV and Oz, and Tommy Elias have happened upon the perfect way to pit “drag queen” against “drag queen” and the audience just eats it up, and so do the “queens”. And my two favorite lesbian emcees, Ellen and Rosie aka Persana and Blanche were there to help the “girls” bitch it up. This week's theme was “Country” and Persona was perfect in her “Broke Back Lesbian” outfit, and Blanche was fabulous in her flowered curtain outfit with three foot tall hair, she looked like a “Munchkin” that blew up !!! (you know I love you girls). The line-up for the evening was: 1. Sable, 2. Carmen, 3. Felina, 4. Mercedes, 5. Sha’nya, 6. Tahtiana, 7. Candi, 8. Deanna, and the fun began. While each contestant did their number, the other contestants were watching. Each contestant was judged on her ability to lip sync and nothing else. Of course they did stay in the spirit of things and dressed accordingly, however they were warned that they must stay on stage where the judges could see them at all times. When they finished they were brought to the stage and each one got to say who they thought should be the one voted off this week. (And this is where the “bitchiness” came in). It came down to 3, Sable, Felina, Mercedes. Then the judges got to vote, Sable stayed, and Felina and Mercedes tied, so they had to “Lip Sych for Their Lives”. Each one had to do their song over again. (I give Felina credit, she sat right on the edge of the stage and sang right to the judges, so they couldn’t miss a thing). And when the judges voted again, Felina was safe, and Mercedes had to go. It was very enjoyable, but, the crowd needs to realize that this starts at 10:30p and you need to get there early to get a seat. Oh, I almost forgot, they had a new “Torch Boy”, a cute little bald man, and he carried his torch well, honey! See you there next week and see what evil these girls can come up with. Get ‘em Girls !?!

hot tails of red stick ...from 40 to spend some time with Kenneth. This is one of those talented writers you just can’t help but love. Not only is his work outstanding in every way, but he is just a joy to be around. Sitting in his study and discussing mutual interests while sipping on a great Manhattan is just one of the great pleasures that this friendship brings forth. Besides this, I have that special gift I always bring him that he enjoys so much. Stay well, my friend. We have a lot of catching up to do. My good buddy Michael stopped by this week to chat awhile before heading on to work. We share a mutual interest in gardening and hybridizing hibiscus, so we always have lots to share with each other. Michael is just one of the greatest guys you will ever meet. He is such a hard worker, devoted to his partner Mark, and always so willing to help me in my own projects. You don’t find a jewel in life like Michael that often, and I do so love our friendship. I also ran into Little Corey at the Farmers Market last week. I was surprised to see him up and about so early in the morning, but the treat was just being in his company. This avid Tiger fan can hardly wait until the season starts and is counting down the days. He’s also about to be off to a Florida beach with friends. Be safe, sweetie. You are loved. BC Boy is a little under the weather, and I worry about this exceptional young man. It would appear that he had a light heart attack earlier this week, and he has some surgery scheduled (actually as I write this report). He is just one of those friends that you love and enjoy being around, and I’m hoping and praying he will be back among the healthy quickly. He is such a hard worker and someone that I’ve known for a long time. His sincerity and generosity to others is so outstanding, and he really stands tall among the masses. He is just one of those unsung heroes that goes out of his way to help others in so many ways. I saw Walker down at David’s house the other day, but I didn’t have time to stop and talk with him. I did, however, learn from one of my contacts that he has taken on a management role at a family relocation business based in the downtown area. He still trains some clients in the

mornings and directs multiple group fitness classes downtown and in City Park after 5 p.m. This wonderful little stud really knows how to stay busy. I do, however, miss seeing him and that big silver limo “hangin’ out” in the neighborhood. Edward and James really miss living in Spanish Town, but they are very happy together in their large house in Capital Heights. They even built a really nice cocktail bar in a building on the property and jokingly call it “the wood shop.” It is always full of new and old friends, and everyone enjoys these two great hosts.

As we now prepare to enjoy another great Southern Decadence, just remember to be thankful for the good times, the good friends, and all the good memories that we are able to share with others. It’s a family thing. Enjoy this period of time. Take care. Be safe. And remember to always wrap that rascal. It’s the right thing to do.

S

o now that school is back in and the hustle and bustle of the summer months die down, we start getting ourselves ready for the holidays ahead, because with the holidays come partyies, and other great things to look forward to no matter what you like to do. The first one on everyone’s mind is happening this weekend, Southern Decadence! Where will you be? New Orleans is at it again this year and we all know that it will be just as fabulous as always, for just so many reasons. So just in case you haven’t kept up with the latest going on around you in your very own state, here it is, Southern Decadence in New Orleans this weekend. Hopefully all will have a blast and party a little extra for me, I will be back in Lafayette covering the few people that will be left, but I want to know minute by minute play of all the juicy gossip. Well anyway, let me get back to my side of town, Lafayette the city that is filled with just so much surprises, and lately it happens all in our faces, the question is, do we open our eyes to be able to see what is really going on and why? School has definitely let back in for the fall semester with the last slow weeks all of downtown has experienced in the last week and

maybe even a little more, but we all know they will get tired of not drinking, they will be back shortly Some are also just saving some money before going to New Orleans this weekend. Well which ever the situation may be you know you will always be able to find drink specials seven nights a week at the one and only Sound Factory. Like the Happy Hour specials all night long Monday nights with a Pool Tournament that you can enter and possibly win some money, or if you're good at convincing you may be one of the lucky two people that the bartender will take his clothes off on a big Monday night. Wednesday night you get to pick, the music that is, any and every song you can think Macky will play it for you. Keep in mind that if you need to grab something to eat on Thursday nights it’s dinner and a movie, with a different guest cook every week and a different movie that is gay themed. If you want to laugh, Drag Bingo every other Thursday is a wonderful way to get a good laugh in. Now Sunday is where they really out do themselves, with another free lunch, drinks under two dollars until six in the afternoon, which is when Sound Factory opens and they serve free Coors Light

draft beer and one dollar well drinks until nine. After nine, they begin getting ready for one awesome Drag Show which has gotten a lot better with the crowd coming in to watch the shows and the people that are actually performing in them now, so go check it out for yourself. Welcoming back to the downtown area, Jules Downtown, that's right you read correctly, Club Seven was sold a few weeks back to your new owners Wendy Wallace and Darren Parker. They left the option of the new name to the customers this time and everyone that voted, chose the old name, Jules Downtown, so they thank everyone and they will take the old name and make it the new, Jules Downtown. They have many exciting things coming this month, Kristy Lee will be returning Friday, September 25, they are having a Jules Reunion Party on Saturday, September 26th, and Joey’s second annual Drag Birthday Party Thursday, September 17th. So give the new owners a big welcome to the streets of Lafayette and just go check them out, also visit them on-line to get up to date plans on events and all that they have coming our way, and we are happy to say that FINALLY, Jules Downtown is now once again gay owned and operated, so now ladies and gents we have two true gay bars that are owned by the gays for the gays. Something for all of us to be proud of when we go out downtown. And lastly, we can't forget to talk about our people over in the Lake Charles area. The big LC is coming along themselves with many surprises in store for all to enjoy. Of course we already know that that is the

place to be on a Friday night if you really want to dance and be around a crowd of people that just know how to party all night long. They also have other things that you should go check them out for, like Drag Bingo every Thursday night, shot specials, give-aways and a chance to laugh your ass off, believe me you wont be disappointed. If feeling like a star is your thing, then head out there on Thursday, tell DJ Chad Evans what you want to sing and he will let you be a star for the duration of the song. You will have fun no matter which night you decide to go. The guys that work there are really nice and will see to it that you enjoy your time spent there. After all that is what keeps people coming back. So no matter where you are, nor what you want to do, just stop by and say hi to any one of these places and the staff at each will be sure that you have a great night there. All of these clubs are on-line so you can get up to the minute up dates of what's going on and the information will be much more accurate. So hopefully everyone will have a safe Labor Day Weekend, a fabulous Southern Decadence and until you decide to read this again, I will be some where downtown checking out the crowd and taking pictures, so I’ll see you out and about. Until then have a great time.

1st Ever Bleather Weekend ~ Mobile, Alabama

We just found out about it this week on line,” says one handsome bear from New Orleans. “You’re on to something here. This could really grow into something big!” That was the prevailing thought from those who invaded Mobile August 14-16 for the first ever Bleather Weekend Mobile! The cooperative effort between local bear and leather organizations, along with four of the area bars, came off without a hitch There was great attendance at each of the weekend’s events, which included cocktail receptions, after hours parties, a grill out, a brunch and even a bear and leather contest. There are NO FEES and NO REGISTRATION for Bleather Weekend Mobile! You’re just required to have a good time! And what was the big attraction to Bleather Weekend Mobile? “All the men!” says a young man named Tony. “All the men in LEATHER!”, he was quick to add. And both leather and fur were well represented at all events, which included a cookout, brunch, cocktail receptions and, of course, the Mr. Southern Renegade Contest and the Mr. Gulf Coast Bear Contest. Pensacola’s Alan McAdams took top bear honors this year, while the leather contest was won by Mr. Toby Lefort of Metairie, Louisiana. Toby now advances to the Mr. Louisiana Leather Contest in New Orleans in October to represent both the Southern Renegades and B-Bob’s Bar in Mobile. Also advancing to that competition is first runner-up David Joseph of Mobile. There were indications that attendence would be good, when host hotel Hampton Inn & Suites quickly sold out the block of twenty “Bleather” rooms and had to designate more. A surprise of the weekend was the large crowds at both after hours parties, Friday’s at The Midtown Pub and Saturday’s at Gabriel’s Downtown. “I wasn’t expecting that many people,” says David , Gabriel’s patio bartender. “They came early and just stayed! Everyone seemed to have a really good time!” At Midtown Pub, the large parking lot overflowed and Bleather attendees were parking at businesses across the street. “We’ve never seen it like this!” pub owner Darrel Foret exclaimed. Saturday’s cookout at The Midtown Pub saw many of those people return, enjoying red beans and rice and every kind of sausage you can imagine. There was also a unique ice sculpture serving up chilled shots created with Barenjager, one of the Bleather Weekend supporters. Sunday’s Bleather Brunch at Vision’s Twist saw every table filled, and a good thing- Renegade David Peyton offered up a spread that boggled everyone’s mind (which wasn’t hard to do by Sunday morning). How can we make Bleather better? That will be an ongoing project for all of those involved. www.mobilebleatherweekend.com will

bleather wknd. ...from 50 be an important part of that. The website won’t just lay idle until next year. It will be updated often with new pictures and fundraising events by both the bears and the leathermen. Raising funds is important, because there is no run fee or even registration for attending Bleather Weekend.

Keeping Bleather Weekend simple means those who throw this event can also enjoy it! A big BLEATHER thank you to our participating bars: B-Bob’s, Gabriel’s, Visions’ Twist & Midtown Pub... our host hotel, The Hampton Inn & Suites on Royal, and our clubs: The Gulf Coast Bear & Leather Association, The Southern Renegades and New Orleans’ own Lords of Leather. Bob Brunson worked hard on the sets for our contests. Vince and the staff at Midtown Pub cooked up a great grill out Saturday afternoon, and David Peyton’s incredible brunch and Sonia’s Bloody Mary Bar made Sunday’s farewell event at Vision’s something a cut above! Also, a big thank you to Jerry at BBob’s for sharing his AMBUSH ads with Bleather Weekend Mobile. Visit the website often to keep up with our plans and events. There’s MUCH more Bleather to come!
