Parker’s election was the Victory Fund’s top political priority in 2009, a year that saw 54 of its 79 endorsed openly gay, lesbian bisexual and transgender (LGBT) candidates elected to public office. The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund is the only national organization dedicated to increasing the number of openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) elected officials at all levels of government. Since its founding in 1991, the Victory Fund has helped grow that number from 49 to more than 450.

Launched in 2003, Freedom to Marry is headed by Evan Wolfson, nationally recognized as a central “architect of the marriage equality movement.” Freedom to Marry guides and focuses this social justice movement on a nationwide level, serving as a strategy and support center for national, state, and local partners, a catalyst that drives and shapes the national debate on marriage equality, and an alliance-builder fostering support from non-gay allies. District of Columbia’s Mayor Fenty Signs Freedom to Marry Bill

New Orleans’ City Park Recognized with Award for Hard-Won Victory

ew York - Statement by Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry and author of Why Marriage Matters: America, Equality and Gay People’s Right to Marry, following the District of Columbia’s Mayor Adrian M. Fenty signing a freedom to marry bill which received overwhelming support from the DC City Council, a majority AfricanAmerican council: “With Mayor Fenty’s signature today, the nation’s capital affirms its commitment to being a fair and inclusive city. We now look to Congress to respect the City Council’s overwhelming support, the Mayor’s signature, and the outpouring of support from the citizens of DC. With the freedom to marry, the District of Columbia will be a place that offers more protection and security to all families, making the community stronger for everyone. We call on all supporters to continue to engage their friends and neighbors in conversations about the freedom to marry in the District of Columbia, and across the country, in order to protect this new law. “ “A special thanks to all of the groups

ashington, D.C. - The American Planning Association has selected New Orleans’ City Park to receive the 2010 National Planning Excellence Award for Hard-Won Victory for its heroic recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The National Planning Achievement Award for a Hard-Won Victory recognizes a planning effort undertaken by a community, neighborhood, citizens group, or jurisdiction in the face of difficult, challenging, or adverse conditions. By August 28, 2005, the 1,300 acre City Park was one of the most visited parks in the country, hosting over 11 million visitors annually. It had a variety of regional recreation resources, a staff of 250 full, part-time and seasonal workers and a recently adopted master plan designed to not only repair the 150-year old park but to build new facilities and programs for the 21st century. The next day, City Park was in ruins. The day after Hurricane Katrina hit, the park was flooded with nearly eight feet of water. All that was left was 1,300 acres of debris. “City Park has made extraordinary progress to rebuild from almost total destruction and shine as one of New Orleans’ success stories,” said Marie L. York, faicp, APA Board Director and 2010 National Planning Awards Jury Chair. “It is an anchor and inspiration for New Orleans and other communities challenged by natural disasters.”

Lesbian Annise Parker Elected Mayor of Houston

H

ouston, Texas has become the largest city in the United States to elect an openly gay mayor after City Controller Annise Parker was declared the winner of a runoff election tonight. Social conservatives fought her election, funding a campaign aimed at turning out likeminded voters to support her opponent, former city attorney Gene Locke. But Parker’s endorsements from labor, police, women’s, gay rights and other groups were echoed by the Houston Chronicle, the area’s major daily newspaper, and her campaign ran a superior get-out-the-vote effort. Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which endorsed Parker, said her victory holds tremendous significance for the gay community. “This is a watershed moment in American politics. Annise was elected by fair-minded people from across the city because of her experience and competence, and we’re glad Houston soundly rejected the politics of division. This victory sends a clear signal that gays and lesbians are an integral part of American civic life, that we’re willing to lead, and that voters will respond to candidates who are open and honest about their lives,” Wolfe said. Parker praised the support of the Victory Fund and its donors, who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help fund her campaign. “I am so grateful to the Victory Fund and its supporters for believing in this campaign from the beginning. This race was about the future of Houston, and whether we will face that future proud to be an open, welcoming, and fair-minded city. Tonight Houstonians said yes to a future like that, and I am glad the Victory Fund helped make that happen,” Parker said.

The park immediately developed a plan of recovery focusing on cleaning up debris, reopening revenue generating facilities, pursuing an ambitious public and private fund raising effort, and using the new master plan to organize the recovery.

Over $60 million dollars in public and private funds have been raised to not only repair the park from storm damage but to guide investments toward the initiatives contained in the master plan. As a result of this money and over 25,000 volunteers, City Park has repaired, renovated or rebuilt the majority of its athletic and cultural facilities. The award for New Orleans’ City Park will be presented at a special luncheon at APA’s National Planning Conference in New Orleans on April 12, 2010. The City Park also will be featured in an upcoming issue of Planning magazine, APA’s flagship publication. [continued on 5]

Reps. LaFonta & Richmond Return $127 Million to Louisiana Small Businesses & Consumers

S

tate Reps. Juan LaFonta and Cedric Richmond, both current Congressional candidates, today joined with small business owners from around New Orleans and Miriam Brown, Treasurer of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, to detail a new federal proposal that would send millions in health insurance refunds to Louisiana small businesses and consumers, including $127 million to Louisiana BlueCross BlueShield members. The plan, a proposed amendment to the federal health care bill currently being debated in Congress, would penalize insurance companies that waste more than 10% of premiums on nonhealth care related costs, and require them to return these excess dollars to small businesses and other consumers. “This plan would end the Wall-St driven race to the basement, spending less and less of premiums on actual health care. Instead of CEOs spending lavishly on marketing and sales to increase their profits, this will hold them to ninety cents on the dollar. Millions of dollars in wasteful spending rebated to local businesses and Louisiana residents could mean a real uptick in our

n Orleans Parish jury, after only two and a half hours of delib-erations found Mark Anthony Ott guilty of the 2007 murder of Salon D'Malta owner Robin Malta. Malta was found beaten to death in his Marigny home. In an unusual twist, New Orleans District Attorney Leon A. Cannizzaro, Jr. tried the case himself. The case was based solely on circumstantial evidence, a single bloodstain, recovered by a hired cleaner. DA Cannizzaro gave a fiery closing argument and said that police could have done a better job gathering evidence in the days after the murder. Ott receives the state’s mandatory sentence of life without parole. Robin's sister Monica Malta led the Malta family in thanking DA Cannizzaro before leaving the courthouse. Robin Malta was a much loved member of the GLBT community and did much in his life to help those less fortunate and engaged in fundraising activities for many of his favorite charities and causes. He was Southern Decadence Grand Marshal XXVI and is sorely missed by his family and community.

economy,” said Rep. Richmond. “Instead of spending the money on critically needed medical care, these insurance companies have refused to pay claims, denied people with medical problems access to health insurance and taken the money to the bottom line. Greedy executives are stuffing this cash into their pockets in the form of big bonuses while individuals suffer and small businesses get ever increasing premium payments,” said Rep. LaFonta. The group released new data showing that BlueCross BlueShield collects more than $2.1 billion in premiums in Louisiana, but spends only 84% of that, or less than $1.8 billion, on health care costs- keeping hundreds of millions of dollars for profits and non health carerelated spending. “BlueCross BlueShield, the largest health insurance company in Louisiana, diverts a stunning 16% of health care premiums from actually providing health care. As New Orleans businesses continue to get back on their feet, our hard-earned dollars need to go directly to doctor’s visits, medicines, and emergency procedures. Instead, health insurance companies spend more than ten cents of every dollar on CEO compensation, lobbying, marketing, and advertising,” said Miriam Brown from the Hispanic Chamber of Com[continued on 8]

the "official" dish ...from 6 merce. Nationally, private insurers currently spend on average only 81% of premiums directly on health care costs, according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers. By comparison, the public Medicare program spends almost 98% of its premium revenue on health care-related costs. To address the impact of these costs, the group called for passage of Senator Al Franken’s “Ensuring Value for Premiums” amendment, requiring that private insurance companies spend 90% of their revenue from premiums on health care related costs. The amendment would require that private insurance companies give their customers refunds on any non-health care-related costs over 10 % of the premium. Consumers would see a decrease in premium costs- as well as an increase in the amount of coverage provided- as insurance companies sought to avoid paying a refund. The rebate required by the amendment would mean $127 million returned to BlueCross BlueShield customers in Louisiana. Amid the slow holiday shopping season, local small business owners explained how inflated premiums harm their livelihoods, and in turn, the local economy, still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. “The high cost of health insurance means three to five people I can’t hire this year,” explained Andrew Gross, president of Radiation Technical Services. “Multiply that times thousands of small businesses and we’re losing tens of thousands of new jobs. It’s completely unconscionable that a nimble, small business like ours can’t compete with larger companies because we we’re not big enough to get access to lower health insurance premiums,” added Gross. A decrease in sky-high premiums would allow small business owners like Gross and Brown to help spark an economic recovery, in New Orleans, around Louisiana, and across the country. It would enable them to invest in the future of their companies and the City of New Orleans -instead of having to make tough choices between growing their businesses and offering health insurance to their employees. The following small business owners joined the rally to explain the impact of inflated premiums on their livelihoods: * Miriam Brown also started her own business this year, Miriam Brown & Co., which provides accounting for other small businesses. A Honduran native who has lived in New Orleans for over three decades, Brown offers bilingual financial services to the city’s growing Hispanic population. * Andrew Gross, President of Radiation Technical Services provides health insurance for all of his 100+ full time employees, but is himself ineligible for his own company’s plan because of pre-existing conditions. His companies have experienced a 22% increase per year in insurance premiums. * Helen Morgan, in her 60s, owns The Fine Arts Center, a restored historic theater that now hosts receptions. She can only afford catastrophic insurance and fears what a hospital stay might cost her-and her business. * Maude Varella runs KidUtopia a start up family day care center. Because of dramatically increasing premiums, she cannot afford to health insurance for herself, only her daughter. The full report is available on request.

Broadway Cares About New Orleans

E

veryone knows that Broadway has a big heart. Most people are familiar with Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS, the nation’s leading industry based HIV/AIDS fundraising and grant-making organization. But Broadway also cares about the Crescent City in a big way. Recently, The Color Purple Company, along with their producer Scott Sanders, met at the home of Lynette Harvey on December 2 for a very special occasion. Her home is the first of 20 Katrina ravaged homes being rebuilt

through the fundraising efforts of The Color Purple tour, in conjunction with the New Orleans grassroots organization, the St. Bernard Project. It was an amazingly touching moment as the company placed a wreath on the door, then moved Ms. Harvey’s furniture into her home just in time for the holidays. Since September, The Color Purple National Tour has been working with presenting cities to raise money to rebuild homes for families who were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The tour has raised over $300,000 which will place 20 families back into their homes. This is just another reason why we

are thankful to have Broadway back in the Big Easy. Until our lovely Saenger Theatre returns in 2011, the Broadway shows can be seen at the newly renovated Mahalia Jackson Theatre. If you did not get a chance to see the astounding performance of The Color Purple, do not fret, there are three more shows rounding out this season. Next up is Mamma Mia February 2 - 7, 2010, Wicked - March 24 April 11, 2010, and Avenue Q - June 8 - 13, 2010. I cannot begin to tell you how this city has deeply missed Broadway touring companies performing in our city. Our cultural atmosphere in New Orleans suffered tremendously after Katrina, and it is exciting to have these shows back. For information on purchasing tickets to any upcoming shows or season tickets for the 2010-2011 season, contact www.broadwayacrossamerica.com or call the box office at 504.287.0351.

he 23rd Annual Art Against AIDS Gala took place on December 5 at the Shops at Canal Place and it was an incredible night of shopping, eating, drinking and bidding. Every year, the NO/AIDS Task Force hosts this fabulous fundraiser where it is all about the art. This year artists designed customized holiday ornaments for 200 lucky patrons. I was very fortunate to choose an ornament created by none other than Satyricon’s talented artist and performer Stephen Rizzo. So many artists donated their time to make these one-of-a-kind keepsakes of the evening. I cannot even begin to name all the artists, but one other artist that did several ornaments was Amon Ra’s Daryl Dunaway. In addition to the ornaments by the artists, many schoolchildren around the New Orleans metro area created ornaments for sale in the retail area, run by NO/ AIDS very own talented artist, Larry Mercier. The silent auction was also filled with plenty of art, gift certificates and baskets of goodies, which made it easy for me to do my Christmas shopping all in one place. The cuisine was the next thing that made the evening special, being able to try many different restaurants. Loved the salmon from Benedict’s Plantation and the pasta from Louisiana Pizza Kitchen. Also, a new twist on an old restaurant is returning to the Crescent City and I can’t wait. Vicky Bayley and Mike Fennelly are bringing back a new version of Mike’s on the Avenue back to their old location at the Lafayette Hotel, 628 St. Charles Avenue, called Mike’s East-West. And there was plenty of libations around to help loosen up your purse strings. Art seems much better with cocktails, which was graciously donated by the Goldring Family Foundation. The entertainment this year was especially good. Johnaye Kendrick is my new favorite performer in the city. She is a melodic singer that makes you just want to listen to her for hours. You can check her out all over the city including Irvin Mayfield’s new place in the Royal Sonesta. The Gay Men’s Chorus also performed along with a DJ provided by the Bourbon Pub/Parade. Special thanks also go out to the committee who put on this fabulous night which included Arthur Roger as Honorary Art Chair. Mr. Roger actually began this event twenty-three years ago and has since been a stalwart supporter of the event and the organization. The committee also included David Aranda and Daryl Dunaway from Amon Ra, Candy Ulmer Cranch, Kathleen Gross, Larry Mercier and yours truly. One special thank you goes out to Director of Development of the Task Force Heidi Nagele Chapman, who I have worked with on this event for years. Heidi will be leaving us this month to move to Atlanta and she will be terribly missed. She received a wonderful honor at the event, as well as a lovely party hosted a few days later at Louisiana Pizza Kitchen. In addition to Heidi, CEO Noel Twilbeck has made this event one of the top things to do in the city. Other thanks go out to Director of Volunteers Doreen Tollerson, Communications Manager TJ Rogers and Development Coordinator Chad Stelly. Founder’s Day Awards Gala

O

n December 12, the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans held its Founder’s Day Awards Gala at JohnPaul’s Victorian Galleries. For the 3rd annual event, things were done slightly different then in past years. Instead of recognizing one individual, the Board of Directors chose six people to receive awards in various categories for their service in the community. I have to say that I am very honored to know three of the award recipients personally. First off, Steven Forster who helms the Times Picayune Big Easy page received the Media Award. This award is given to a person or organization that covers LGBT issues and events in an honest light and consistently works with and exudes a genuine respect for the LGBT community. Steven has been a friend of mine for years and there is no one more deserving of this award than he is. He is the first photographer to use his real name in a gay publication in New Orleans. He also has the distinct honor of being the last person to photograph Ethel Merman alive. Adding to this accolade, Steven has also won eight Alpha Awards for fashion. And on a special note, he is truly a great friend and someone I respect immensely. Next, my fellow Ambush columnist, Toni Pizanie received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Another person well deserving of this award, Toni has been a fixture in the LGBT community. Through her volunteer work, she has helped further many causes. She sits on the board for the Gay Appreciation Awards and PFLAG and was a past Pride Grand Marshal in 1998. Known for her volunteerism, anyone who knows Toni, can count on her to be there and give them 100% of herself. She is truly a remarkable woman and her acceptance speech was so moving that there was nary a dry eye in the house. Larry Bagneris received the Politician Activist Award. This award is presented to an individual for outstanding achievement in promoting the rights of the LGBT community through political channels. Larry is the Executive Director of the Human Relations Commission and is responsible for receiving and mediating complaints of discrimination in Housing, Public Accommodations and Employment. He also serves on the Mayor's Advisory Council for LGBT Issues as well as Mayor Nagin’s liaison to the City Council. Whether working with him on a committee or hanging out with him at a show at Big Daddy’s, Larry’s effervescence for the city and the LGBT community shines brightly. Also receiving awards was American

Aquatic Gardens for Business of the Year and Dr. Coleman Pratt M.D. for Health and Wellness. Rounding out the group, Larry Best got the Founder’s Award which is awarded to a member of the LGBT Community Center who continues to work within the community to ensure the rights of all LGBT persons. Congratulations to all those who received awards this year. To find out more about the awards or how to support the LGBT Community Center go to www.lgbtccno.org or call 504.945.1103. Gay Mardi Gras Celebrates the Holidays

H

oliday events are all around and the gay carnival krewes were busy this holiday season. The Mystic Krewe of Satyricon held three events in December. First they did the opening night of White Christmas at

Le Petit. Brandt Blocker and his team did an amazing job bringing this timeless classic to life. That same week, they also hosted The Silent Night of the Lambs opening night at Le Chat Noir. As always, Running with Scissors did a zany parody on two classics. Brian Peterson was a stand out as a deranged Santa Claus. Also on December 12, Satyricon held its annual Christmas Bazaar, buffet and holiday auction at The Friendly Bar Annex. Becky Allen and Mickey Gil were the lively and funny auctioneers for this event. Whatever holiday shopping I did not have done, I completed at this event. For more information on Satyricon events, go to www.mystickreweofsatyricon.com or call 504.525.4498. The Lords of Leather also had several events during December that was noteworthy. Both of them were at JohnPaul’s and huge successes. The first was their wine and cheese art auction which spotlighted several local artists. I bought a great painting there that I now have proudly displayed in my entrance hall. And on

December 13, they held the fabulous Divas Among Us, hosted by Miss Louisiana Leatherette Cathy Fox. Proceeds of this event, over $1,500, went to help St. Anna’s Food Bank. This was a wonderful night of great entertainment with Cathy Fox, King Cake Queen XVII-Elect Opal Masters, King Cake Queen XIV Princesse Stephaney, Easter Grand Marshal X Marcy Marcelle, Zsa Zsa d'LaHor, Queen Amon Ra XLIV Rhonda Roget, Mr. Louisiana Leather Toby Lefort, Lord King XXVI Gary Vanderventer and Britney O’Brian. They had another fabulous silent auction and ornament sale. For more information on Lords of Leather future events, go to www.lordsofleather.com.

Holidays in New Orleans

T

his city is filled with the holiday spirit that it is infectious. Most of that is due to the wonderful job of the hospitality community. At the beginning of the month, the hospitality community threw a Naughty or Nice Celebration at the Republic. The event was hosted by the Hospitality Education Networking Association (HENA), The National Association of Catering Executives (NACE), The Meeting Professionals Organization (MPI) and The International Society of Event Specialists (ISES). The evening was filled with great entertainment including carolers at the door in costume. But these were no ordinary carolers, they were none other than Becky Allen, Chris Wecklein and Harry Mayronne. A DJ spun for the entire night with special guest numbers throughout the evening. The first was the wonderful singing sensation of Anais St. John who did a very nice number followed up by a very naughty number. Next up was a very special holiday show by Fleur de Tease which was very nice, and just a little on the right side of naughty. Republic was a wonderful place

to hold this event, and if you have not been there yet, check it out, they truly have the hottest staff around. The cuisine was prepared by Pigeon Catering with a special candy bar donated by NOLA Candy. You know it is going to be a good party when you are greeted at the door by a very hunky Santa and sexy Mrs. Claus as you enter. Another fun event this holiday season was the Tales of the Toddy held at the W Hotel. This event is presented by the Tales of the Cocktail and is one of the best holiday events of the season. This event mixes some of the best bartenders from around the city making holiday specialty drinks while you shop the local artists and vendors who have tables selling their wares. I purchased even more Christmas gifts there. I do not even have this many people on my holiday list, I think I am stocking up for next year. This year the event was sold out, so you know it is good, so get your tickets early for next year, or better yet, get them as a Christmas gift to someone special (or not so special, but you have to get them a gift anyway) on your lists that drinks. Hint, that would be me. For more information on Tales of the Cocktail, go to www.talesofthecocktail.com. From seeing the lights on Fulton Street to caroling in Jackson Square, enjoy the holiday season in our great city.

here is a new gay bar in town and what a welcome addition to the city. The Bywater Patio Bar out back of Bywater BBQ is one of the newest hot spots. The owner Mike has made this comfy little area a special place. Decorated for the holiday and encompassing there lovely courtyard, it is quickly becoming a local favorite. It also has a Wii game which I played recently by the way and kicked some butt at bowling. Who knew I was good at it. It also has karaoke on Monday nights with Rikki Gee who is just as fun and entertaining as she can be. Also, the

incomparable Rusty LeRoux has returned behind the bar and she is better than ever. Somewhere in the background, Elton John is playing The Bitch is Back. She is one of the best bartenders in the city mixing drinks and giving her insightful points of view on every subject from politics to entertainment. It is definitely worth the price of a beer.

Get Over It

2

010 is right around the corner and what is your New Year’s resolution. Here are three words that will help you on your way to a great new year. Get Over It or Let It Go, whichever you prefer. I found out that life is too short to sweat the small stuff so to speak. If someone does you wrong, just let it go, do not harbor ill will or hatred, that takes too much of your precious energy which is deserving of better things. Bitterness is not an attractive look on anyone. Besides, when you really get down to it, is he or she really worth it. It also does not have to mean you need to be a doormat, stand up for yourself whenever necessary. If you feel wronged speak your piece then move on. Remember there is a one night stand around the corner with your name on him. Do not worry about what others think of you or what they say. Honey I found out a long time ago if they are talking about you, then you obviously mean something to them. Any publicity is good publicity. I mean really has anyone talked about Tiger Woods in the last year until we all found out he slept with all those women. I am waiting for Princesse Stephaney to come forward. Can you imagine that Enquirer story. Now turning the other cheek, also does not mean you have to be someone’s friend. Choose the people around you

wisely, remembering that negativity breeds, so try and surround yourself with positive influences. I find that indifference is a much more powerful weapon than hatred. But a tazer seems to put them in their place quicker. Just kidding. Now keep in mind, it has taken me many moons to heed my own advice, but it has worked out well. Also, try to do three things this year you have never done before. It can be as small as going to a new festival or joining a book club, or bigger, like taking a trip to somewhere exotic, or going to the Westbank for those queens who never venture out of the Quarter. If you are a slut, give monogamy a try in 2010. If that does not work, then call me. Recently an article written in this magazine stirred up some emotion in the drag community. Controversy is good if it motivates you into a positive action. Always strive to be a better you. But some words written in a magazine should never hurt someone’s feelings. Keep in mind, it is always easy for people to critique others and they do not define you as a person. Everybody’s a critic, but not everybody is qualified to make judgments. And besides, how much talent does it take for a boy to come out and lip sync boy songs dressed as a boy. Hell, I do that in front of the mirror every morning as I get ready. Have his ass put on high heels, now that is talent. Also as we say goodbye to 2009, lets take a moment to remember those who have passed this year. Remember them in your heart as you move on to an exciting and prosperous 2010. Happy New Year Everyone! Have an event or have something of interest to the LGBT community, feel free to send press releases or information to tonymgp@hotmail.com.

sappho psalm by Toni J.P. Pizanie Email: psalmwrite@att.net

Stormy, Stormy Night

T

his is said to be the wettest December on record, and I believe it. My roof is leaking in three places suddenly, and the garage keeps flooding with water rushing under the door from the force of the rain. But that’s not the bad news. I almost didn’t make it to the LGBTCCNO Founders’ Day Party at JohnPaul’s. Ray and I got as far as Airline Highway and the storage road when we came upon bumper to bumper traffic that was moving at a snail’s pace. Looking ahead, we could see that cars and trucks were u-turning across the neutral ground and heading back into Metairie. We can make it, I insisted. NO, I am not going to take that chance, Ray shouted back at me. Even Metairie Road was flooded. It was the first time I’ve ever seen it that way. There was no way out of Metairie into New Orleans. Or so we thought. So there I was back at home – all dressed up with someplace to go and no way to get there. Ray was refusing to go back out, and worse, he was refusing to let me drive myself. Just before the big fight where I growl, NO ONE tells me what to do, the phone rang. Randy Trahan was at JohnPaul’s asking where we were. He told us how to get downtown without drowning, and we took off again. What the heck was so important that I couldn’t miss a party? The Community Center was giving me their Lifetime Achievement Award. The LGBTCCNO was the first New Orleans LGBT group that I joined after returning here from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I’d been away for five years this time. I had old friends but no contacts with the Gay Community other than St. Mark’s and Charlene’s. Thanks to LGBTCCNO, I was outed by WWL-TV to my family and their friends. The Center was responsible through me for turning my mom into a volunteer for Gay causes. They filled my life in the 1990’s with hours of work, planning, social gatherings, political gatherings and an award for Volunteer of the Year more than once. Since the move to Decatur Street, I haven’t been as active due to other interests and organizations. I still support Center activities, write articles to bring awareness to the Center and most recently caused changes that have turned out to be good for the Center and the community. The new board is outstanding, so it seems, and is making the Center more active with other organizations and individuals. The Center is and always has been important to me. Its success is important to the community, and necessary, I believe. I very humbly accepted this treasured award. I joyfully place it at the top of all the awards I’ve received throughout the years. A few of the most meaningful were 1994 LGCCNO Volunteer of the Year, 1995 GAA Lesbian of the Year, 1998 Pride Grand Marshal, and Petronius Queen 42nd. The cost to me was oodles of time, a few arguments, visits to politicians and a new

tux with matching jewelry. Of course, getting old helps – they figure you won’t be around much longer. Ha. I started the evening with two Lemon Drop shots that Russell had waiting for me at the door. Once upstairs, I ordered martinis, several martinis, and finally the hosts served me champagne which I like very much. By the time Ray got Julie in our car, I was pole dancing outside JohnPaul’s. Steven Forster has the pictures to prove it, I’m sad now to say. Luckily, I am a happy drinker. I don’t ever remember getting angry or mean when I have had a lot to drink so I wasn’t worried about really offending anyone. I just usually make people laugh, and there was lots of laughter outside the bar that night. On Thursday of this same wet weekend, PFLAG Board Members had a dinner meeting with National Director Jody Huckabee at Jacquimos. After a good meal and a few martinis, we all headed over to St. Matthews UCC to hear Jody speak to a group of about 40 people, and take part in the PFLAG Christmas/Holiday Party. Wow! There were some yummy desserts. Charles made a pecan cream pie that would put a mild diabetic into a coma. The middle was a mix of powdered sugar, cool whip and something secret with piles of caramel soaked pecans on top. Jude and Jeffrey made rich brownies. There were dozens of cookies and sandwiches and crackers and cheese. I believe that everyone brought home treats. I’m still enjoying the sugar cookies. Tucked between these two fun parties was the Gay Easter Parade Sponsors Thank You Party at Rip and Marsha's. Yes, it was another feast with their rare recipes and full bar. I drank champagne until I was ready to float away on the waves rolling down Bourbon Street. I made this annual visit to see people like Miss Billy, Princesse Stephaney, Zsa Zsa d’ LaHor, Marcy Marcell, Jerry Scavo, Opal Masters and a ton of others. It was worth braving the rain to see everyone and sit with Rip and Marsha to catch up on what’s happening in their world. I love working for Ambush from home but miss all the activities of the office and the Quarter. Everyone looked their best and the costumes were worthy of Steven Forster’s photographic genius. Steven was also receiving an award from the LGBTCCNO the next evening with me. For Steven, this was one of a long list of awards for his outstanding talent. And I love that he is a jazz fan like me – jazz music. His FB picture is one of the great Miss Ella; my personal favorite. But let’s get back to all that drinking. I do it so seldom that when I do drink, I try to make up for long dry weekends at home. Ray doesn’t drink and I don’t drink alone. So some of you every weekend partiers need to bring me along with you so I’ll get back into partying like I used to with Rip [continued on 16]

in the spotlight Party Thanks Gay Easter Parade Sponsors for Helping Raise $15,528.75 for Food For Friends

T

he Board of Directors of the Gay Easter Parade (GEP) hosted its annual Sponsors Thank You Party at Ambush Headquarters December 11. Sponsors and their guests, along with members of the Ambush staff, numbering some 170, were greeted in the downstairs Ambush offices. The receiving line running from 8-8:30pm included Easter Grand Marshals X Marcy Marcell and Tony Leggio, NO/ AIDS Task Force Executive Director Noel Twilbeck, Food For Friends Director Glen Kahrman, and GEP Board members Rona Conners, Opal Masters, and Rip and Marsha Naquin-Delain. GEP Board members Electra City and Tittie Toulouse were unable to attend due to the loss of one of their dearest friends in Lake Charles. The sponsors were being thanked for helping raise the most money of any previous Gay Easter Parade. After expenses, $15,528.75 was presented to Food For Friends, also the highest donation on record from the parade. Total parade charity donations now exceed $63,643. Miss Billy served champagne, wine and beer in the Ambush offices. Many of the artwork pieces the couple has collected over the years are on the walls of the office, and works of art appear throughout the three story mansion. Here also guests were treated to Rip and Marsha’s famous Debris Gumbo with Wild PigTurDucKen. Yes, there was roasted wild boar, smoked turkey, roasted duck, rotisserie chicken, smoked pork sausage, and okra in this original Cajun creation. Going down the hallway, guests entered Rip and Marsha’s home leading up the sweeping three story staircase to the second floor landing housing Belle Lain’s Magnolia Bar. Along one wall of the staircase are the individual portraits of the King Cake Queen Royalty Club. Miss Ashlee of Corner Pocket fame was the celebrity bartender on duty serving cocktails, soft drinks

and juices. Guests then entered the hallway leading to the formal Victorian parlour featuring many antiques from Marsha’s grandmother’s estate in Baton Rouge. The furniture covered in pink and mint green velvet, were highlighted with an entire wall of hanging royal purple fabric, and a baby blue Oriental rug. All of the Victorian tables are topped with white marble. In an alcove of this room is the altar and prie dieu with the couples’ religious icons, statues, and relics collected on their travels in Europe and the United States. Another highlight in this room was the carved pedestal featuring the monstrance the couple obtained in Rome which was blessed by the late Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square. There were several holiday pieces on

display including the whimsical miniture pink lighted Christmas tree which the couple won with the highest bid at one of Good Friends past Christmas Gala's. It was created by Pet Asylum adorned completely in miniature pet ornaments. Going past the parlour, guests headed towards the end of the hallway lined with many antiques which led into the formal dining room. This was the largest room on this floor which has a huge Victorian curio cabinet housing many of the couples collectibles including Faberge’ Eggs, ornate eggs, jewelry pins, crystal, silver, porceline and crowns. One corner has the baby grand piano which is topped with a maniquin displaying Marsha’s King Cake Easter Grand Queen Coronation gown, mantal and crown. The Duncan Phyfe dining room table, buffet and china cabinet were also from Marsha’s grandmother’s estate. The china cabinet houses Marsha’s grandmother’s Dolly Madison china and crystal, Rip and Marsha’s Royal Albert Old County Roses china, and a collection of Menefee’s plates won at a fundraising auction. Here guests were treated to the Naquin-Delain Holiday Feast including Antipasto de Maison, Cajun BBQ Meat Balls, Mama’s Oyster Cornbread Dressing, Pickled Vegetables, Tamale Cream Cheese Pyramid with Chorizo, and both mini red velvet and carrot cakes from The Decadence Shoppe. The large holiday Christmas tree in

sappho psalm ...from 14 and Marsha. And maybe I’ll pole dance again. Coming up next is Joe and Julie Thompson’s family party. They (the other family members) don’t know I’m not family because Julie adopted Courtney Sharp and me years ago. It is always a good time that is followed the next afternoon with Joe and me watching the Saints on Sunday and then all of us getting together again on Christmas Day. This has become my holiday go to place since I lost my family members. If I can stay up, I’ll be attending MCC’s midnight service on Christmas Eve. Of course, it starts at 11pm so why do we call it Midnight Mass. I’ll be back at Church of Christ the Liberator on Sunday. My Christmas wish is the same as in years past – good health, peace and happiness to all. For my non-Christian friends, please know that I respect your beliefs and wish you a happy and healthy New Year. If you are a member of FaceBook, you can send thanks and blessed wishes to service personnel in Iraq. When you get to the main page, look to the right for the connection. Just click and follow the instructions. It is worth the minute it takes to send a card. I may hate the war but I love the men and women who are willing to die for my freedom. Don’t forget them.

the dining room was adorned with ornaments collected by the couple over the past 35 years with many purchased at Art Against AIDS. Through the purchase, Miller was able to double the size of his operation overnight bringing in 52 more rooms to his complex of multi-bedroom suites, luxury townhouses and cottages, all on the N. Rampart Street corridor adjacent to the French Quarter. It is just steps away from Armstrong Park, Bourbon Street and most of the popular clubs, bars, restaurants and delis in this historic neighborhood. Even though the two hotels will maintain separate names, guests will have greater access to move freely between their courtyards, pools and common areas. Miller has developed a niche market appealing to travelers from nearby cities and states who are looking for an affordable opportunity to enjoy the French Quarter, with many being repeat customers year after year.

his time of year is a magical time of year depending on how you look at. It’s cold, and usually has nasty weather throughout, so far the most part this time of year is looked at as a “dead” time of year, and some people tend to get slightly depressed. Now let’s twist it from the norm, and break it down to the basics that mothernature tries to teach us. During the winter, trees loose their leaves and become barren and on the outside would appear to be dead, but it’s at this time of year that we can

look at these lifeless trees and learn so much about them. Life has been said to be a learning experience and you must first learn to be able to grow, move-on and live, spring! Every year plants, trees loose all that they have and following the longest, coldest winters, they all blossom and come back with greener leaves and even fill out more than they were the previous years. When you take what life gives you, be it a person, job, or even just a situation; strip away all the pretty “leaves,” that keep you from understanding what’s really going on and you will see everything you need to know. Just like the tree, it isn’t until the leaves fall that we can see and learn all about the tree, the leaves are just a cover up, or front when you put it to life’s little tangled webs. To learn and grow from a situation, one has to remove oneself from it, and by that I simply mean to strip it down to what it is, taking all the sugar coating off, leaves, and exam the entire scenario. Another little thing that can help anyone from getting caught up in a bad place, all those old sayings that our parents tried to teach that you never wanted to listen to, toss them up into an equation you may have and you will get the solution, yet again when you break math down to its bare minimal then it is easy to solve. So this has turned out to be longer than planned, but so are the many things in life and you can’t just cut corners with it nor sugar coat it to stop from hurting someone’s feelings because ultimately you become the person that gets hurt and looses out. Also, this is the time of year we all take a step back to try again once the clock strikes twelve, so take what you want and here’s to sticking with those New Year Resolutions! Sound Factory and Jules invite you to join them any time, seven days a week there is something to be going on that will make anyone’s night simply the best night you could have. Jules Downtown has done some remodeling that looks really nice, so if for nothing else just take a pass to see what all has been done and if there may be more to come. Sound Factory has many things coming for starters, Karaoke will be moved to Wednesday’s and many other things that you will want to be sure to know what’s happening at the other end of downtown! Crystal’s in Lake Charles will also be making some changes as the new year rolls in. So just be sure to head on down to Crystal’s and see what they have planned for you there. It’s always good to get away and party with new people. So I will end this saying that I hope you all have a very safe time, wish everyone a joyous Christmas and a great and fabulous New Year's!!! Hope to see you all out for the party of the year, the last party of the year, New Year's Eve!!!

I

don’t like all the commercial aspects of the Christmas season, but I guess it has always been this way. After all, when we were youngsters, I’m sure we made out wish lists and put pressure on our parents to have Santa deliver these items. I looked back through my decorations this year, and even though I didn’t put up a tree, I saw things from past Christmas pleasures. The most impressive items of my collection are those Christmas ornaments that have been in the family for nearly a hundred years. They are fragile but so beautiful. At one time, they hung on a pine tree that came from our property, and the snow was soap, something that so many families used back then. The lights and other decorations went on first, and then the snow was placed delicately on the limbs so as not to cover any of the lights or ornaments. I suppose it doesn’t sound all that beautiful, but it was. Not only was it a beautiful sight, but the electric trains, cowboy toys, and clothes were all such a thrill to see under the tree. I recall one year that after all the presents were opened, we all got ready for bed. I don’t know if I was disappointed or not, but my dad came to my room after I had almost fallen asleep and told me I didn’t finish cleaning the living room and I had to get back up and finish my chores. I’m sure I was quite upset in having to do this, but when I walked through the dining room and looked into the living room, there was a new bicycle by the Christmas tree. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, and I have to think that a smile came to my face. I can recall to this day how I touched that bike to make sure it was real. So it was on that Christmas day of long ago that I learned to ride my bike, and again I recall that my dad, who wasn’t the most patient person in the world, was upset because I couldn’t keep from falling. I suppose he got tired of holding me up, keeping me from hurting myself. I had experienced that same attitude when he tried to teach me how to swim. What he lacked in patience he made up for in love, something I didn’t realize at the time but now that he is gone, I can look back and see all the love that he had for me. So at this Christmas season, think of all the joys you have in life and all the loved ones who care for you. That is really what it all means, and that is why we leave Christ in Christmas. It is a time of love and togetherness, and we should all take pride in what we have and how we can share this feeling of the season with others.

Local Parties

T

he biggest social gathering of the season for me and many others takes place at the TylerPossa Law Firm on Broussard. It is that time of the year when John, Joe, Stephanie, and all the employees reach out to their friends and clients with a lavish Christmas party. I can recall so many of these

taking place at Joe’s home, but they are now held in the law offices. Just finding a parking space within a few blocks is difficult. It’s as if the entire city turns out for these festivities. The food is fantastic. The people are great to be around. And everyone gets to admire the outstanding beauty of our most famous host, the fantastic Possa man. It is always so nice to be included in these annual events. Splash had an outstanding gathering last week which they termed “Customer Appreciation Night.” That is exactly what it was as everyone gathered to accept and be a part of this annual tradition at one of the Deep South’s major dance clubs. I was going to be there the previous night, and Cory asked me to wait a night so that I could celebrate the season with them on this special night. It was a smashing success, and everyone enjoyed the camaraderie of the gathering. The tree wasn’t up at Hound Dogs when I went by. If I understood correctly from Joy, something melted on their regular tree so Kyle and James were off to their place in Mississippi to obtain another tree. I also learned that Johnny has moved on to another career, so that means I need to get back and do pictures of a couple of new bartenders they have. George’s was in the process of being decorated when I stopped in last week. I got some nice (long) hugs from my beautiful Luther. My goodness! My heart was racing with excitement. Andy was busy getting things ready for customers, and Mark was their first one of the day. Chansley was in fine form and eager to see what pictures I had used in Ambush. Lea had a fabulous private party at his home too. This sexy stud works at the nursery over on Perkins Road and is another of those good huggers. He was exhausted from all the work at the nursery and the preparations for the party, but everything came off perfectly. It was a great gathering of friends. Coming up this week is the annual party taking place at Sam’s home. I can’t recall how many trees he has up this year, but I know that there are at least a half dozen – different colors, separate themes, and all positioned so nicely around the hot tub built into his lovely party room. Patrick, who used to manage Hibiscus Bookstore, was the decorator. In fact, I picked up Sam for our theater outing, and we left Patrick working on the trees. I’ll do some pictures after the party this weekend and pass them along for you all to see. Maybe I can get a group pic of all the cute young studs that will be in attendance. There were numerous other parties and activities for everyone to enjoy. The best outdoor function was the lighting of the Christmas tree in the downtown area. The weather had canceled it the previous week, and it almost canceled it the following weekend. It was cold, but that didn’t stop the enthusiasm of all those in attendance. North Boulevard is all decorated [continued on 37]

hot tails of red stick ...from 34 for the season, and a stroll around the fountains by the River Center is a must. Put on a coat and head out to this beautiful setting. You will be glad you did. If you were able to make it to Natchitoches on the first Saturday of this month, you got to see another spectacular light display. It’s been a while since I went to this event, but I know several who made the journey this year. It is a full day of outstanding activities, and when that switch is thrown to turn on all the lights in the downtown area, it is something of unbelievable beauty. I don’t know of another city that does this so elaborately as Natchitoches. Lots of neighborhoods are all decked out in lights again this year. Even Spanish Town has a few that are nice to see. I do think that lots of people don’t go all out for home decorations anymore. However, there are some communities that sponsor contests. It’s nice to just relax with a car full of friends and drive around looking at these lights. I even did this in New Orleans last week. As a former resident of the city, I wanted to see all this beauty first hand. Of course, I had to dine at Jack Dempsey’s in the Bywater, attend the theater presentation of “The Color Purple,” and view the lights on the way out of town on my way back to the capital city. I do miss living in the Crescent City and wish I still had my apartment in the French Quarter, but time has a way of changing things. What are left are the beautiful memories. One of my big pleasures of visiting New Orleans was to stop by the bookstore on Chartres to chat with Fred. When he passed away, it was just never the same. I also used to love to visit with Shan at his book and antique store on down the street, a block or so from the Beauregard-Keyes House. And it was also a special treat to stop in at Brocato’s for a little ice cream. These excursions also included so many of the bars that were and still are in the Quarter. Even an occasional stopover at Ambush Headquarters on Bourbon Street was always such a treat. I sometimes wonder why I don’t get out more, so I’m going to have to make myself a list of things to do in 2010 and get back to the basics. Damn Katrina! That storm changed so many things, but now we have the Saints and the city is alive again. That means the basics have to return and will include more bar

hoppin’ and dining and visiting with friends. It means more parades and parties during Mardi Gras. And it will be a time for enjoying those king cakes again. Life is short, and we all need to celebrate every day to the max. Let’s all make this a part of our resolutions for the new year.

had breakfast again last week at Strands on Laurel, but it was a little different this time. I got to observe a beautiful young man, one I’ve known for a while but always a little on the shy

side. At least it would appear that he is shy, but I have my doubts. I think there is a smoldering inferno beneath the surface. He had several text books on the table and was checking something on his laptop. Occasionally, there would be a slight smile. Then he would just gaze at the table as if [continued on 38]

t is a little observed fact that de spite protestations of cynicism on the part of the public, and our mistrust of people in many different areas, we are still overwhelmingly hopeful. Humanity is an expectant people. We still hope that our leaders will prove superhuman, we still hope that our religious leaders will prove infinitely better than human beings can be, and more than this – we still have a basic expectation that tomorrow will be better than today. Cynics will say this is misguided, but apart from the few with selective memories, most of us accept that in the broad areas of human development, today is a great deal better than a hundred, two hundred or a thousand years ago. We in the LGBT community understand this better than most – in just fifty years we have gone from a violently persecuted people, living in constant threat of jail and public disgrace, to a people whose time is coming – that have a place at the table. All is not achieved but it is a great deal better than it was. Hope is not foolish – we hope that our leaders will learn, we hope that our pastor’s will practice what they preach and we hope that progress will mean a

hot tails of red stick ...from 36 in deep thought. He even got up, went outside for a cigarette, and then came back to resume his studies or whatever he was doing. What intrigued me about him the most was a discovery I had not seen before. He straightened up in his chair, leaned back as if to stretch, and at the same time pulled his T-shirt tightly down from his chest. My goodness! I almost fell out of my chair. I had no idea he had such a dynamic form beneath those clothes. Well, I had observed those tight jeans, but for some reason never got as high as the chest. The guy has a magnificent set of muscles hidden from view. It was then that I knew for sure that this one is a remarkably sexy young man. With blonde hair and a nice smile, James is a wonderful specimen of young manhood at its finest. I recall when he lived around the corner and was dating a friend on our street that he managed to display that shy, almost reserved air of privacy. I miss seeing him now that he has moved out of Spanish Town, but I do recall all those times when he was that quiet neighbor, minding his own business, keeping to himself, and going back to his apartment at dawn. Having a loving relationship now seems to have changed him somewhat, but that quiet and shy appearance still lingers. I find him to be one of the sexiest guys around. With Christmas so near, I could easily see this stud as an ornament on my list. Talk about ringing some chimes! Oh, my goodness! Merry Christmas, my friends – and a Happy New Year too!

better life. This is not unrealistic, but it is optimistic. The season of Advent, culminating in Christmas, is all about the triumph of hope - not a hope born of certainty and security, but the tenuous hope that clings on despite everything the world can throw at it. Jesus was not the messiah that people expected or wanted – they wanted a messiah on their own terms who would ‘set everything right’ – renew the Jewish nation as they thought it should be, and wreak horrible revenge on all who had ever hurt them. Instead they got the living embodiment of loving kindness, the God made flesh who turned all their expectations on their heads. This Jesus offered them much more than the messiah they wanted, but in order to partake of it they had to abandon pride, vengeance and embrace forgiveness and love. For many people today this is too hard to even contemplate. We are little better than those who condemned Jesus, as most of us want blessings on our own terms – if they come packaged in ways that call upon us for change and growth we run in fear. But despite our failings, hope kindles within us and is very hard to extinguish. This thing that characterizes the love of Christ more than anything else for me is endless forgiveness – endless returning – even after a year of struggle and failure, successes and disappointments have embattled us; we are still able to approach Christmas with hope and a sense of new possibilities. It grieves me that we set our failures between us and God, when in fact those failures are just part of the human landscape – to be erased in a moment by the grace of God. Those things we call sin are a much bigger problem to us and to our conscience than to the God who made us as we are, who knit us together in our mother’s wombs – warts and all. For me, it is my failures that have been the source of my greatest growth, and my greatest blessings – the urgency of sin is to learn from it and rise above it, not to get bogged down in endless self recrimination and guilt. Self acceptance and self respect are essential parts of the Christian life – it is not about denial, but transformation. Without my God-given flaws I would have floated along in a kind of half life, never spurred into action, and never spurred into self examination and progress. Christmas is not about giving (at least not about gifts), it is not about food or even family. Christmas is about hope –the hope that God robed in human flesh - God in Jesus Christ, brought 2000 years ago and continues to bring again and again, as often as we need it, despite all the struggles and despite our fear and trembling in the face of the future. Christmas says God lives with us, Christmas says that God, the incomprehensible maker of heaven and Earth, of the far flung stars and the innumerable galaxies touches human experience. Furthermore, this God

touches us and feels us and gathers us up at our most vulnerable and broken. In the bitterness of Calvary God has even tasted our despair. In the face of such a God there is no other alternative but hope! Happy Christmas Everyone! Rev. Clinton Crawshaw is the pastor of The Big Easy Metropolitan Community

Church, part of the only worldwide LGBTaffirming denomination. The Big Easy MCC meets every Sunday at 5pm at St. Matthew’s Church, 1333 South Carrollton Avenue, NOLA 70118. Check out their website at www.bigeasymcc.com. Pastor Clinton can be reached at 504.214.4340 or revcrawshaw@yahoo.com.

Livin’ Janis

A

few people have been seeing Elvis Presley wandering around the Oakwood Shopping Mall, but I never seem to spy the guy. But, last night I did get to see Janice Joplin live and wonderful on the stage of Le Chat Noir. If I hadn’t been a big fan of her during her days in the 1960s thereby knowing she would now be in her late 60s, I could have almost been fooled as I enjoyed a stunning tribute to Ms. Joplin as she was reincarnated live and raw by the remark-

Dorian Rush

able Dorian Rush in Livin’ Janis, which she also wrote. I was amazed at the accuracy of Ms. Rush’s body language, gestures, vocal nuances and strong singing voice. There was a raw intensity that exploded on stage when she sang Ms. Joplin’s great hits. It was like a religious experience of the Holy Spirit when she got into it, I mean really got down and into it, the singing of those remembered songs and lyrics. Ms. Joplin said at one time she wanted to be the first white black blues singer and she was. Ms. Rush shows why and how. Bessie Smith, Leadbelly, Odetta, and Big Mama Thornton were a big influence on Joplin

who was just an “ugly girl from Port Author, Texas” until her great talent as a singer exploded all over the country in the mid sixties. I’ve got to say the guys in the band, Brian Brossard, Bill Davis and Michael Dollars - they were magnificent and made the whole show really work. The script written by Dorian Rush was clever and accurate, giving us a clear glimpse into the life and work of the sadly deceased Ms. Joplin. The dialogue was natural and interesting and eventually very moving. “Well come down, come down,” were the opening lyrics of her first song and that set the tone for the evening. It was totally 60s rock like we once heard years ago living in New York; and Ms. Rush and the boys in the band recreated the essence of this sound with uncanny artistry. The nearly full house gave the performers a standing ovation. I can still hear her singing the song Kris Kristofferson wrote for her, “Busted flat in B a t o n Rouge... Me and Bobbie McGee... Na na na na na...” Or her acapella. version of “Lord , won’t you by me a Mercedes Benz.” I wonder what Janice Joplin would have thought about her reincarnation. I can hear her now saying, “Well f**k man, she sounds, acts, and looks just like me. Far out man...” Janice Lyn Joplin over dosed on pure heroin on October 4, 1970 at 1:30am. But, she was vibrantly alive one night at Le Chat Noir and I got to see her, hear her, and love her all over again. Thank you Dorian Rush. Man, you’ve got a real talent when you can pull this off!
