Vote Mitch Landrieu for Mayor of New Orleans Feb. 6

M

itch Landrieu is endorsed by Ambush Mag because he is the best candidate for the job. Mitch is a native of the city. He grew up in Broadmoor, graduated from Jesuit and received his law degree from Loyola University. Mitch is a Democrat, a Roman Catholic and is married to attorney Cheryl Landrieu. He has five children and was himself the fifth of nine children. Other endorsements include the Times-Picayune and Gambit. He is also endorsed by the Alliance for Good Government, Leslie Jacobs, the International Longshoremen’s Assoc. Local 300, and is supported by Musicians for Mitch and 1,000 Women for Mitch. Mitch had a successful law practice for 15 years. He became an expert mediator, focusing on alternative dispute resolution. In life, law and government, he always seeks to bring people together to

find common ground. As a State Legislator, Mitch represented the Broadmoor neighborhood for 16 years. During his tenure, he made his mark as a reformer who could get the job done. As Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, Mitch has served as an executive, managing a $127 million budget and 800 employees. To deliver results, he put in place strict standards of accountability. After Hurricane Katrina, he led the effort to rebuild the tourism industry, and the thousands of jobs it creates. And when other government agencies failed, Mitch’s team got more than $22 million in grant money from Congress into the hands of hundreds of homeowners quickly. During his tenure, Mitch has focused on creating jobs. He launched the Cultural Economy initiative to grow jobs through our culture, music, food, film and art. The cultural economy accounts for 144,000 jobs in our state.

Bud Light & Oz Present 46th Annual Bourbon Street Awards Feb. 16

T

he 46th Annual Bourbon Street Awards Show, the ultimate costume contest, is set for Mardi Gras Day, February 16 at 12noon. In 2009, for the first time in 23 years, the contest actually took place back on Bourbon Street. Since 2002, Oz New Orleans has presented the contest on St. Ann at Bourbon. 2009 saw the contest outside Oz on Bourbon Street down from Ambush Headquarters at 828 Bourbon. The awards were previously held outside of Cafe Lafitte

in Exile on Boubon until 1985 when it was moved to the corner of Burgundy and St. Ann outside of Rawhide in 1986. Johnny Chisholm and Oz New Orleans, as well as Bud Light brings us this fantastic contest. Award categories include: Best Drag, Best Leather, Best Group and the grandest award, Best of Show with 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category. A $500 cash prize is also awarded to Best Overall Costume. Celebrity emcees will feature the talents of mega circuit star Bianca Del Rio and Oz’s own Blanche Debris. The parade of costumes will originate down Bourbon at Dumaine passing both Cafe Lafitte in Exile and Clover Grill, the original site of the awards, heading

Now, Mitch is running for mayor of the city he loves. After more than 20 years of government experience, he has what it takes to get the job done at this critical moment in our city’s history. His top priorities as mayor will be creating jobs, improving our schools and making our streets safe. Even John Georges admits that Mitch has done a great job as Lieutenant Governor. Still Georges has run false ads about Mitch’s achievements. And Mitch will do a great job for the city of New Orleans. He voted for a Constitutional Amendment to seize the property of drug dealers, he supported giving the strongest sentences to sex offenders, and to protect children from child abuse. Mitch Landrieu is right for our future. He has been strong on civil rights for the GLBT community. When interviewed at the home of Frank Pizzalotta, Mitch was pro-Gay. He will represent the Gay Community in our city. It has been proven that millionaire businessmen who say they will rebuild the city, have failed in the past. Do we want to take that chance again? I believe that we must rely on a proven public servant. We can rely on Mitch Landrieu. I wish to express my thanks to Wayne Christenberry and Frank Pizzalotta for their assistance in setting up an appointment with Mitch. past Ambush Headquarters towards Oz at 800 Bourbon. The Bourbon Street Awards, well into its fourth decade, has hosted some of the most exciting and extravagant Mardi Gras costumes ever seen, and a bit of controversy as well. In 1963, the late Arthur Jacobs, then owner of the Clover Grill was facing declining revenues, as were other businesses in the Lower Quarter, at that time. “This end of the Quarter, around Bourbon and Dumaine had a bad reputation in those days. Things around here have come a long way,” Jacobs recalled. Jacobs began, and oversaw the event until 1974, when he conceded the show to Tommy Hopkins, the owner of Cafe Lafitte in Exile, located across the street from the Clover Grill. During Jacob’s tenure with the Awards, he faced a good bit of opposition because of the participation of female impersonators. “A big shot reporter tried to degrade the Awards with a feature in a New York magazine in 1964. the "official" dish ...from that the show contributed to moral decay. The city was no help either with its additional restrictions and rules. I’m happy the city fathers have taken a different view today,” Jacobs said. During the 60’s and early 70’s the contest drew thousands of people to the corner. Japanese, German, British, and French film crews recorded the show for their networks. In 1971 Darlene Jacobs, Arthur Jacob’s daughter, and noted local attorney, emceed the show, which was later televised on the BBC. “In 1967 there was a beautiful boy from New York who won Best of Show,” Mr. Jacobs said. “His impersonating a woman was so well done, viewers and judges alike could not tell that he was a man.” “I’ve always felt the contestants were the stars of the show,” commented Jacobs. “I’ve turned down movie stars, musicians - even Al Hirt was refused access during the show. Pete Fountain came before the show one year and played for an hour, but once the show started, the contestants had their moment,” Jacobs remembered. The now legendary “Parade of Cleopatra” featuring Houston entertainer Torchy Laine as Cleopatra, won “Best of Show” three consecutive years, 1977 through 1979. Cleopatra, whose litter was born by numerous body builders, was preceded by Egyptian musicians, food and wine bearers, slaves, and one year followed by a tiger and its handler. This spectacle earned the Awards contest the title of “The Largest Free Show of Mardi Gras.” Jacobs laughed, “We had to make

Torchy a judge so he wouldn’t compete.” When Tom Wood bought Cafe Lafitte in 1974, the Bourbon Street Awards were assumed with the bar. Escalating production costs and more restrictive city guidelines threatened the Awards, but the Show went on. The late Ed Smith, a favorite emcee of the show, well known locally for his flamboyance and humor, produced - in his own name - the requisite permits for the show in 1982 and 1983. He staged it at the corner of St. Ann and Bourbon. To avoid conflict with Smith’s show, Wood decided not to compete. “Everyone knew it as the Bourbon Street Awards anyway” Jacobs noted. “Contestants from all over the world came to participate and model their costumes.” When Smith fell terminally ill in 1984, the Awards were not staged, but Jacobs proudly recalled, unofficially, contestants returned to Dumaine and Bourbon to show off their costumed creations. 1985 brought the Bourbon Street Awards officially back home to Cafe Lafitte in Exile at Dumaine and Bourbon. In 1986 the Awards were relocated to the corner of St. Ann and Burgundy in front of the Rawhide. “By staging it there, more viewers were able to see the show,” said Wood. In 1994, American Chronicle did an hour long segment on Mardi Gras titled “Farewell to the Flesh” and the Bourbon Street Awards got great coverage. In 2002, the Awards were acquired by Johnny Chisholm and Oz/New Orleans, and moved to St. Ann on the side of the club at Bourbon. In 2009, the awards returned [continued on 12]

Party, Party, Party

I

t’s the end of January and time for another deadline. The last two weeks have been full of events that have been fun and exciting. Before I look towards the future, I want to review the events of those weeks. It started with MLK Day when Delgado gave their employees the day off so Julie Thompson and I went to the movies. We saw The Single Man and both agreed that every gay couple should see this film. We loved it and so did the people we knew who were also in the theatre. AMC called it a Select movie which seems to mean that it is a great movie but one they aren’t promoting because they don’t think the hetero, religious right movie goers will enjoy or understand it. We only saw two men – older men – walk out. Go see it. You’ll enjoy it from beginning to end. The film I didn’t write about in the last issue is The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. This is an adult surrealistic fantasy in the Faust style. I loved the dream like scenes, the love story, and the totally unrealistic entertainment. This is not a love story. This is a struggle between man and the devil beautifully done. On Tuesday of that week, I enjoyed the “surprise” birthday party Darrin Duplissey hosted for his partner Robbie Gurtner. All the usual suspects were there plus a few new faces (to me). Since Darrin, Chris Schlumbrect and I made the TP after the LGCCNO Awards Party, we decided to duplicate that pic as there was a pole in Darrin’s living room. I’m still trying to get Chris to email me a copy. Ray and I enjoyed the evening with

special emphasis on the food. Darrin’s dream is to become a dessert chef, and he proved his talent by making a three tier red velvet cake and a lemon chiffon cake. He didn’t stop there because his idea of party food is a huge pork roast, two kinds of potato salad and rice with gravy. Everything was delicious and Robbie seemed to enjoy this celebration in his honor. If you have read my columns for a length of time, you’ve read that I like dogs, and love Great Danes. My precious Tom died in 1997. Darrin and Robbie have a Dane the same huge size as Tom. His name is Ashton and I tried to sneak him out of their house and into my car. Have you ever seen someone sneak with a Dane? Together we are about 400# of woman and dog. It didn’t work. Next evening was The Community Coalition (TCC) meeting which announced the new officers and board. I’m looking forward to their accomplishments. The plans are big, and community help is welcome/needed. If you have a business or organization, you are asked to join. The Last Reading of Charlotte Cushman was everything I said it would be and more. Karen Shields transformed herself into Charlotte. We laughed and cried and applauded until our palms were stinging. I am hoping that she will open this work for another weekend. One of the best parties of the season is Ambush Mag’s Krewe of Queenateenas King Cake Queen Coronation. This year we bow to The Parisian Queen Opal Masters. She was truly breath taking (pics elsewhere). This was another party where the menu was worthy of praise. Even better than the food is the guest list. Butch and Chuck from Bon Maison Guest House, Robbie and Darrin from LGCCNO and myself sat in the Toni Pizanie & Dawn Leggio at the 17th King bar and did a Cake Queen Coronation

critique on hair, makeup and costumes. Gurl, you just do not want to know what we think about some of your favorite people. Our favorite politicos were there so we got to joke with Larry and Frank. Congrats to Larry for receiving the ACLU’s big award. I even have a fav high school friend that is always there to compare knee replacements with me. Of course, Miss Billy was downstairs working to keep cups filled with wine. Ashlee, whom I haven’t seen in years, was pouring in the upstairs bar. She looks good and is as sweet as ever. Speaking of sweet, Joann Guidos was shining alongside her Lisa. I am happy for them as I’ve admired Joann for years. Once again this year Larry Graham is the official photographer for the King Cake Queen. As always, he did a lovely job with both the invitation photo and the portrait photo. I saw former Petronius King Greg admiring the pics from years past. The next morning with heavy hearts Ray and I headed to Church of Christ the Liberator. This would be the second to last service before closing the Church. While out and about, I’ve been asked why and the truth is that if you don’t support the church with your presence and small donations, it cannot pay its bills. Two points fill me with sadness. First was the loss of Fr. Nicholas who is doing great in Mesa, AZ. The second is not hearing the sermons of Fr. Michael. Michael’s services are very inspiring. I will miss him and Fr. Jimmy, their insights into the Bible and their nurturing. From there the time dragged by waiting for the Saints game to start and the time to leave for the Petronius Ball. Being a former Queen of Petronius, I was excited about going back to the krewe. There have been so many changes for the good since I was a member, a new captain and new members. I got to know out going King Arthur and Queen Freddie at the Royals party, and of course my long time friends Randy and Jimmy are a special part of the new Petronius. Randy is this year’s queen and next year, he will be the captain. I dressed early so I could watch the first half at home. The drive to the ball location was weird and reminded me of the days after Katrina when no one was in town. The streets were empty. Could everyone be watching the game? I guess the answer is yes. At the ball, the game could be heard over the din. Princess Stephaney was a lovely sight in an emerald green gown with a copy of Elizabeth Taylor’s emerald and diamond necklace and earrings. Zsa Zsa was also pretty to behold with her new golden blonde hair and maroon gown. Opal was still stunning even without her two foot crown and jeweled matching gown. Marsha was dressed in black lace. She and Rip made an exceptional handsome couple. Royalty from other krewes were just as beautiful and exciting to watch. Once again there were beautiful people that I have not seen in a long time. The Petronius Ball was fun and we were all enjoying the night when a cheer arose from the back of the room and traveled quickly from table to table. The Saints won! Who Dat! I believe! We did it! Super Bowl – here we come! People poured onto the dance floor screaming, dancing, jumping. If you had no one to hug, you took pictures of the ones that did. Lots of people were crying. There was no need to explain the hot, gush of tears that we’d held back since the 60’s. “Finally,” I heard from one tear streaked face behind me. By the time we sat down and calmed down, the King and Queen of Petronius, Lee Briggs and Randy Chauvin, were announced. They were elegant. I stood in honor of the occasion. Jimmy came to the table to toast his queen. When Open Court began, I rushed to Randy to share my happiness for him. After which, I rushed to the car to get home to check on the Saints. WWL radio was doing interviews and our men sounded happy and a little disbelieving. The final event was the next evening at Ralph’s at the Park. LGCCNO had a small yet perky group of supporters who gathered to socialize. The hot topic of the evening was the Saints game. Those who were in the Super Dome shared a story of controlled chaos. The police had to ask the happy not unruly people to leave. This idea from the Center was a good one and I hope they will have more of these small meet and greets. I was drinking the Italian Margarita – yum. I wouldn’t mind one of those every evening after a hard day of playing on FaceBook. Mardi Gras is just two weeks away so be ready for more party talk next issue.

nvited guests were already gathering as the gate to the Ambush Mansion opened at 8pm. After presenting their admit cards to Police Officer Mary L. Lathouwers, guests entered into the Ambush offices on the first floor where they signed the guest book, and proceeded to the receiving line. King Cake Queen XVII Opal Masters was beautifully adorned in a gleaming stoned evening gown which only added to the glamour of the trademark King Cake Queen crown. Krewe of Queenateenas CoCaptains Rip and Marsha Naquin-Delain were beside her. As guests greeted the queen and co-captains, they came up to Masters partner of 34 years Darwin Reed. Reed presented each guest with huge white pearls with a length below the knees as a gift from King Cake Queen Opal to each attendee. At the end of the receiving line stood a rustic guillotine, courtesy of Carl Mack Presents. It brought to life the krewe's 2010 theme of Passport to Versailles, NO GUILLOTINES PLEASE! for the 17th annual King Cake Queen Coronation. Yes, there was a guillotine for the evening's festivities, but more on that later. Reigning as The Parisian Queen, Masters greeted members of the King Cake Queen Royalty Club; representatives of the Krewe's of Amon-Ra, Armeinius, Lords of Leather, Mwindo, Petronius and Satyricon; and guests of both she and the co-captains. The receiving line ended at 8:30pm. Shortly before the King Cake Queen gift exchange, outgoing King Cake Queen XVI Tami Tarmac good naturedly sat and placed her head through the guillotine as Queen XVII Opal offered a sip of refreshment before it was off with her head! Not really, but what a delight for partygoers. At 9pm, the King Cake Queen Royalty Club retired to the inner office for their annual gift exchange. New Queen Opal Masters presented each former queen with a beautiful jeweled Eiffel Tower pin/pendant. Then The Parisian Queen Opal Masters with the Eiffel each former queen presented Tower centerpiece in the dining room Opal with a special gift. And Paul Melancon was in charge of serving the Naquin-Delain's C'est Bon Feast in the dining room. The feast was one of the most difficult for the Naquin-Delain's to prepare. The majority of the dishes were prepared a day or two ahead, and the escargot was not put into the Orleans sauce until five minutes before the 8pm party start time. According to many of the guests, it had to have been one of the best culinary achievements of the couple to date. Draggin’ for Pussy

I

f you are thinking that this is a new themed lesbian night at one of the gay bars in New Orleans, you are incorrect. In fact, it was one of the most unique fundraising shows that was held on January 16 at Starlight By The Park. Ms. Toebe hosts this annual fundraiser for the LASPCA at Starlight and it was quite the night of entertainment. Numerous performers in the city offered up their talent for this worthy cause. Draggin’ for Pussy is a suicide drag show.

Miss Toebe in Draggin' For Pussy

What is a suicide drag show you may ask? Well, I will tell you, because wikipedia could not help me on this one. It is when the performers get up on stage and find out what song they are doing without any prior knowledge or practice beforehand. Now for some of these entertainers it truly does not matter because they couldn‘t even get a song right if they had rehearsed it for weeks. But for the more seasoned professionals, it is fun to see how they can improvise on stage. The cast included Princesse Stephaney, Anita Rich Goodman, Jaded Jade, Mercedes Ellis Loreal, Starr Daniels, to name a few. They performed their little hearts out and all for the wonderful little pussies and puppies at the SPCA raising $154.50. Toebe had a trash can for donations on the stage that fit perfectly with the theme. So if you missed the show this year, keep your ears peeled for the next one. It is a great night of fun for a worthwhile cause. Starlight By The Park is located at 834 North Rampart Street. Stop by sometime to witness some of the city’s most colorful characters. You are always sure to be entertained there.

Good-bye David

O

n January 14, 2010, the New Orleans gay community said goodbye to a wonderful man when David Cooper Boyd, King Satyricon II and current Captain of the Lords of Leather, passed away. I met David in 2005, when I joined the Krewe of Satyricon. He was one of the founding members of the organization and an integral part of the krewe‘s success in its formidable years. David then joined the Lords of Leather and became captain producing several fabulous balls. But David’s generosity did not stop with the Lords, he supported all of the gay Mardi Gras organizations. His gra-

ciousness and friendship will be greatly missed by all who knew him. So this Mardi Gras, raise a glass to our friend, who I believe will be watching the revelry from above and smiling. Cheers, David, here’s to you.

Off With Her Head

L

et them eat cake. King Cake that is. On January 23, the Krewe of Queenteenas celebrated the coronation of Opal Masters as King Cake Queen XVII at the Ambush Mansion on Bourbon Street. Masters will reign supreme over Gay Mardi Gras 2010 as “The Parisian Queen.” The theme of the night was a Passport to Versailles and it was an exceptional fete. Elegant partygoers mixed and mingled as the libations flowed as freely as the well wishes for the guest of honor. Opal wore a beaded gown that was simply exquisite and her crown looked like it was made to be placed on her head. What can I say, but some people were just born to be royalty. The entire event was themed accordingly from the décor to the cuisine. Rip and Marsha went above expectations with their menu that included such French dishes such as Marie Antoinette Venison a la Bourguinon and Louis XIV Gateau de Roi Avec le Fromage Frais or better known as King Cake with Cream Cheese. My favorite was the scrumptious Escargot Orleans. Past King Cake Queens were in attendance enjoying the night as they welcomed Opal into their Royalty Club. But the piece de resistance of the evening was the beheading ceremony of King Cake Queen XVI Tami Tarmac at the hands of Opal. Who knew guillotines were available on eBay. I have to make sure my articles are on time. Be on hand this year, as Opal throws the first ceremonial beads from the Ambush balcony on February 16 at the 23rd Official Gay Mardi Gras Bead Toss. Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!

Armeinius Royalty Announced

O

n January 16, the Krewe of Armenius announced their royalty at a party Uptown at the home of King and Queen Armeinius XLI Ricky Lenart and Tim Jeansonne. The weather was wonderful as guests enjoyed cocktails poolside. Ricky and Tim’s home was the perfect place to host this wonderful party. They are not only members of Armeinius but die-hard supporters of all of the krewes. At a certain point of the night, guests were gathered in the courtyard for the big announcement. Anticipation filled the air, as Captain Bruce Orgeron moved to the balcony of the pool house overlooking the yard. Shades of Evita flashed to mind as he addressed the crowd. Finally the time we had all been waiting for arrived and he announced Queen Armeinius XLII Rusty Toupes and King Armeinius XLII Albert Carey. Both king and queen looked very comfortable in their crowns as they received their sub-

The Special Event Show

N

ew Orleans played host earlier in January to The Special Event Show which was a conference of meeting professionals from all over the world. They spent four days in the Big Easy. And, New Orleans showed them how we throw parties down here. The attendees days were filled with seminars, classes, a trade show and lunches, but the nights are what shined. Many people in the New Orleans hospitality community worked diligently to make this show a smashing success. Attendees from across the globe said that this had to be one the best conferences they had been to. From the opening night party at Generations Hall to the Welcome Reception at Mardi Gras World Eastbank, guests were treated to all the best New Orleans has to offer from the cuisine to the entertainment. The final night gala was off the charts, as far as parties go and believe me I have been to some of the best. A woman wearing a red dress that flowed about fifty feet acted as a red carpet. The formally attired guests enjoyed a stellar award show and a wonderful seated dinner. The entertainment that night was marvelous, with rap artists, a gospel choir, violinist Amanda Shaw, aerialists, step performers and the Honeybees all performing. After the concert, the party did not end, a curtain fell to the floor exposing another dance floor with a DJ playing hot tracks, as millions of pieces of confetti filled the air. Confetti or balloons falling always makes any event magical in my book. Descending from the ceiling was a chandelier with a girl in the center hanging upside down pouring champagne for guests. It was truly a sight to behold. I spent the evening catching up with some of my friends from other cities, dancing and just showing our guests exactly what makes New Orleans one of the best cities in the world.

Out of the Frame and Off the Wall

T

hat was the theme of the Krewe of Petronius’ Bal Masque XLIX. On Sunday, January 24, Petronius held their ball at the Laborer’s Union Hall on Tchoupitoulas Street. The

event was special for many reasons, the wonderful royalty that was presented, the great entertainment by hotties Jason and deMarco, the creative costumes, but most of all it is the place I was at when I heard that the Saints won the bid for the Super Bowl. Captain Bill McCarthy should be proud that a history making moment took place during his ball. But I digress, I wanted to give a quick summation of the event for those who did not attend. As always, the proceeds from the bar went to the NO/AIDS Task Force with the members of the task force on hand slinging drinks. The night’s tableau followed the ball’s theme to a tee. Princesse Stephaney came out as emcee of the evening and the night at the Petronius “Grande Dame Gallery” began. First there was the presentation of colors by the New Orleans Bear and Bear Trapper Social Club, then the National Anthem was beautifully performed by King Cake Queen XVI, Tami Tarmac. The returning royalty was introduced and keeping with the Can theme from the previous year, King and Queen Petronius XLVIII took the stage as Jackie Clarkson and Arnie Fielkow in Can of Worms. Their outfits were larger than life and comically topical. The Queen wore Jackie’s trademark (another word for tired) red outfit and the king beamed brightly in his zoot style suit. There cans were actually Spam cans filled with glittered oversized worms. What a wonderful royal return for Freddie and Arthur. Congratulations to both of them. Next up was one of my favorite people, Captain Bill McCarthy who has done so many impressive things for this krewe. He came out as “Framed.” His costume was so huge, it almost did not fit in the hall. It was wonderfully grandiose and as his altar ego, Bootsie DeVille, Bill worked that runway like a pro. Costumes of the night followed other great painters both locally and worldwide, past and present. From Edgar Degas to Dr. Bob, no one was spared. An Elvis lookalike who came out as Fried Peanut Butter and Banana was just plain fun. As a ball virgin, he made quite a good first impression on the audience. All the costumes were festive and inspired. Two of my favorites was the ode to Dr. Bob with Bottlecaps. It was worn by Brent who worked it. The ballerina’s homage to Edgar Degas as Pretty in Pink was just downright hysterical. Special guest performers for the night was Jason and deMarco, who I was not that familiar with before the ball. But I can see why these two young men are quickly rising on the music and gay scenes. With the international release of their album, Till the End of Time, Jason & deMarco became familiar names to music fans when their first single “Trying to Get to You” climbed the Billboard Charts and their second single, “This is Love” won “Music Video of the Year 2006” on MTV’s LOGO. A remix of “This is Love” along with their newest dance release, “It’s Okay”, both produced by DJ Scotty K, were both added to Abercrombie & Fitch’s playlist and have been heard in stores worldwide. Can we all say GAY all at once. Their autobiographical and controversial, documentary-film, We’re All Angels, from director Robert Nunez, currently airs on the SHOWTIME NETWORK. [continued on 31]

under the gayday ...from 28 The film explores the public and private lives of these rising pop stars, who are gay, spiritual, and in love. The film chronicles the lives of the two singers as they perform all over the country in dance clubs, at pride events, and even in churches. And, now gay Mardi Gras balls. Jason & deMarco’s latest release entitled “SAFE”, produced by David Eaton (Dynamite Hack’s hit, “Boyz-N’Tha Hood”, “Soldier Girl”), was released September 16, 2008. “SAFE” is now available in Best Buy stores nationwide. This very cute duo performed two outstanding numbers during the night, with their second number interrupted by the news of the Saints win. This had to be the most remarkable moment of the night, when the reports that we won echoed throughout the entire room. People sprang to their feet hugging, crying, cheering and dancing all at once. We made history that night and I could think of no other place I would have rather been, except maybe on the Super Dome field giving Shockey his congratulatory kiss, then with all my friends. After all the hoopla died down, it was time for the new king and queen to be presented. King Lee Briggs and Queen Randy Chauvin took to the stage in their royal attire that was exquisitely tailored. Their regal walk made for a wonderful ending to a stellar night. Petronius is the oldest gay carnival ball in New Orleans and I for one am already looking forward to their 50th anniversary next year. For more information on the krewe, come to their rush party on Sunday, March 27 at 35pm at JohnPaul’s, 940 Elysian Fields.

JohnPaul’s also hosted the after ball gathering that night which was a great way to wind down and mingle with the Saints fan still partying. Thank you Petronius for a memorable night.

Interview With Ayme Olivio from Mamma Mia

You are the Dancing Queen!” Pretty soon New Orleanians will be singing those words at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre February 2 through the 7 as Mamma Mia hit’s the stage. If you have not seen this play, it is one of the best feel good musicals ever produced. Besides how can you go wrong with an evening of Abba songs. Recently I caught up with one of the cast members for a quick phone interview. Ayme Olivo plays Lisa, Sophie’s bridesmaid and girlfriend. She has been touring with the show for a year and a half now. She started out in the ensemble and was moved to the role of Lisa six months ago. TL: What is it like being a part of this touring production? AO: It has been an amazing experience, it feels like it has only been six months not a year and a half. I was in the ensemble covering the part of Lisa, so when the part came open, I moved into it. Which made for a great new change, something different. TL: Have you ever been to New Orleans? AO: Actually this is my first time to New Orleans. That is one of the perks about being a part of a traveling production, we get to travel to places we have never been before.

Ayme Olivo in Mamma Mia

TL: What do you find so special about the show Mamma Mia? AO: It is probably one of the best juke box musicals that exists today. It is very funny and well done. And who doesn’t love the songs of ABBA, especially the finale which becomes like a sing along concert. The show speaks to everyone, it is about relationships. Everyone can relate, but especially women. It is about finding that right person to spend your life with and also about families, the relationship between mothers and daughters, or girlfriends. Even my guy friends can’t help but liking this show. TL: What is your background? AO: I earned my BFA in Musical Theatre from Cal State Fullerton in 2006. I played Maria in West Side Story region-

ally then did a straight play called Anna In The Tropics. But my love is definitely musical theatre. It wasn’t shortly after Anna that I got the call to be part of the Mamma Mia touring production. I have been very lucky. TL: New Orleans is a food city, are you a foodie? AO: Like most actors, I used to be a waiter. I worked at the Cheesecake Factory and loved all the food there. So whenever we go to a new city, I find out if there is one close and bring my castmates there. I help them with the entire menu. TL: Well the state of Louisiana does not have any Cheesecake Factories, but we have a Cheesecake Bistro, but I am sure you can find some good restaurants here that you may like. TL: What else do you plan on doing when you are down here? AO: Well we heard about this famous street we have to go down and have these specialty slushy drinks. (She says laughing.) TL: Hurricanes? AO: That’s the ones. I heard we just have to start at one end of the street and go in every bar along the way. (Now I am not even that brave, tourists!) We are very excited about coming to New Orleans and getting the entire experience. And New Orleans is happy to have them here along with the Broadway series. For information on tickets for Mamma Mia, call 504.287.0351. Have an event or have something of interest to the LGBT community, feel free to send press releases or information to tonymgp@hotmail.com.

Who Dat Nation

I

don’t know about the rest of you, but I woke up the following morning after the Saints and Vikings game with a headache from all the stress from the big blowout. I hope the next one in Miami will see our Saints ahead and not having to go into sudden death overtime. My nerves were shot, so to speak. At any rate, I took an aspirin and headed out for beignet fingers and café au lait at Coffee Call and watched the sun come up on a magnificent and happy Monday morning.

It was still a celebration here in Baton Rouge. I think people were still in that state of pride and shock at what had taken place the previous night. It is good to see the effect that this football season has had on everyone. Whether you are a fan of the game or not, there is still that sense that something really nice has been accomplished here, and now we all await the next stage and what it can mean for our state and America’s new dream team. The Who Dat Nation has arrived, and everyone can enjoy this new feeling of greatness and move on to all things Mardi Gras. It’s all good.

Saint's Among Us

I

suppose we are all Saints in one way or another, sometimes physically, other times mentally, but most of the time just saints. I would like to pause here for a moment to once again mention a loss that has been felt by so many here in Spanish Town. I told you about Jean Lee in my last column, but I didn’t have a picture to post. Then I recalled a wonderful gathering of friends last year on David’s porch on Bungalow Lane where everyone had such a great time. Among those pictures was the one I took of Jean, and I [continued on 38]

hot tails of red stick ...from 35 wanted to share it with you, so I included it on my picture page. I think of her each day as I walk past her home. I miss her walking by my own home. She is missed but will always be remembered as a happy and loving member of our community. We had some good times. When it comes to passing a good time, I have to say that in order to do that, all I need is the companionship of my wonderful BCBoy. I called Sam to ride over to Denham Springs with me last week to see and celebrate John’s new home purchase. It was more than I expected mainly because of all the nice touches inspired by this young man in his quest to put his own originality to play in the building of this house. From the special lighting to the choice of woodwork and tile, he really made this a unique place. I’ve told you many times about John, my BCBoy, and each time it has been with a lot of love and kindness toward this talented and fantastic guy. I watched him closely as he showed us around the house, and each room had something unique added to it which could only have been

BCBoy & his big truck

from a brilliant mind and someone who really cared about the outcome. From the inside to the outside, he told of his plans and what he wanted to do to bring this all about. I really can’t begin to tell you how proud I was to see John so happy in his new surroundings. From the first moment I saw him, I recognized an attachment that would only grow with respect and time. It all came together that Sunday afternoon as I watched him emerge from a youthful and fun-loving youngster to a dynamic and accomplished individual with a bright future ahead of him. It all came about because of hard work, a dedication to strong principles of family duties, and from the determination to succeed. My BCBoy did it, and he did it his way. My buddy Tommy from Acadiana is coming in this week from Las Vegas for a visit with family and friends before continuing on to fulfill his plans. I’ll have to fill you in on the details later, but I’ll be so glad to see him again. As you may recall, he is from Eunice and used to live in Spanish Town. He worked at the local casino and was a great asset to the local community. He is just another of those good guys, a saint in his own way. He too is on his way to better things and something that will make him happy.

Leading The Way

W

hen I posted the picture of Anthony and Kevin in the last issue, I had no idea they were cousins. I’ve always thought Anthony was a nice Italian stud, and I only knew Kevin as a hot number that could get you all excited with hardly an effort on his part. Just speaking was the key to his attraction. At least it was for me. I recall many years ago photographing him on the stairway at the old Hibiscus Bookstore. He and Wayne were friends of the owner, and a lot of good times were passed there. I lost track of Kevin over the past couple of years, and then, all of a sudden, there he was at George’s. I didn’t get to talk with him, so I’ll have to follow up with Anthony and find out the latest on his life’s journey. In the meantime, I don’t bother Anthony too much because I know he is completely overworked trying to overcome the effects of the fire that destroyed a local complex where he worked. He is another intelligent youngster and definitely has a way of winning you over with that smile and great personality. It would be nice to go out with him for a drink and some chit-chat about the latest news from his world. Maybe we can do that after the madness of the Mardi Gras and football season has passed. It’s good madness, but it’s also stressful madness. Well, school is back in session again, and my neighbor Robert is at it again. You can tell how talented he is just by checking out his landscaping and his artistic decorations throughout his home. It just comes natural to some people, but I can’t even draw a straight line without a ruler. (Besides, I thought a ruler was for something else.) He leaves early for class and returns late, so he must really enjoy what he’s doing. He is also a brain – great example of intelligence in every thing he does, including picking his wonderful partner Brandon. They are a good example of how two people can merge careers and

interests and make for a great success in love and respect. Friends of mine, Phil and John, seem to be another of the happiest couples around now. Even though I don’t see them that much, we keep in touch by e-mail, and I often see notes of their activities on Facebook. It is so great to see this strong bond between them when others are calling it quits. I was reminded of how fragile some relationships are when I noted two other individuals who have apparently gone their separate ways. I was shocked because I had always thought of them as two inseparables – handsome, good jobs, nice personalities, and both just the best of the best. I’m at a loss for words, but I do wish them both the best. I noticed work is under way to trim up trees in preparation for the big Mardi Gras bash at the corner of Spanish Town Road and Seventh Street. This is Gay Central and a great place to be on Fat Tuesday. It’s also crowded so if you want to get anywhere near, you need to get there early. This is also the corner where Splash sets up their truck and tent. I don’t know of their plans this year, but I know that Debbie, Claudette, Gerry, and Josie are preparing early. They have to do this because they live at this location. The Capitol Grocery is located on the opposite corner. I’m sure I’ll catch Dwayne and Little Corey on that famous corner. It is an annual photography shoot with them being the first of many photos documenting the day. Hopefully, I’ll get a big hug from gorgeous Lance too. It’s been too long, and I have a feeling that Mikey will be back in town if he can get away from his job in Shreveport. I think he has just been on vacation, so he better come up with some fancy excuse so he can get off work and be with everyone. I hear the Spanish Town Mardi Gras Ball was great this year. I need to take this in one of these years. I’ve lived here for a number of years, but something has always come up on ball night to keep me from attending. It is quite different from most balls, but then it’s Spanish Town. What do you expect? I’m really looking forward to the New Orleans parades this year. It is going to be one of the wildest ever especially Bacchus, Orpheus, and Muses. Then on Fat Tuesday, I’m going to try to get back in step with the times and make it to Bourbon Street. There are so many people to see and things to do. I’m excited. As soon as all this is over, I need to make my way back to Abbeville for crab cakes, the best ever, no doubt about it, with a stopover in Lafayette. I haven’t seen Kenny in a while, and I need to remedy that situation too – unless we run into each other at the Spanish Town Parade or on Bourbon Street. I’m sure he will be out and about somewhere. Time is just passing so quickly that I don’t ever seem to finish everything I want to do. Is it that way with you too?

State of Joy

S

ometimes I am surprised at how some businesses can stay afloat in this economy, but thank goodness the ones important to me are making it. I have lots of friends who make their way to Strands on Laurel Street for coffee and excellent pastries. It is close to Spanish Town and within walking distance. It also keeps me from having to drive over to Perks on Perkins Road. Besides, Perks discontinued hamentachens, so I don’t go that often anymore. I gave a recipe to the owners of Strands in hopes that I would have a surprise waiting for me one of these days. So far it hasn’t worked, and I may have to try to create these delicious treats in my own kitchen. Another thing that could help many businesses would be to advertise in publications that would draw more of a customer base for continued returns. It surprises me how some actually post ads in papers that don’t mean anything to the gay community or help their businesses either. I know I sound like a broken record, but Ambush is a gay publication and is a big help when it comes to promoting gay businesses. Lots of people read it by picking up copies or going online to check things out. It is also a way to keep the money in the family, so to speak, and the articles, ads, and advice gleaned can be important to all things gay. I know the economy is in a decline, but it does seem to be holding its own. It would be advantageous to try this method of garnering new business. It’s all up to you and your choices. On that note, I’ll sign off for another week or two. Keep those thoughts positive, and positive things will come your way.

acadiana happens by Joey Collins, Lafayette, Louisiana Email: ejcollins583@gmail.com

H

ello Acadiana, my name is Joey Collins and I’m coming to you as the new representative for Ambush. As a permanent resident of Louisiana, in particular to south central Louisiana, I feel that this opportunity couldn’t have a better voice than mine. I wanted to take this moment to introduce myself and my goal with this column. My main focus is to bring awareness to ALL of Acadiana, including the entire gulf coastal region. Most of you already know me and know what I’m about. For those of you, who don’t, prepare for the ride. So with that…I begin…. Stars fell on January 23rd when Jules Downtown and Sound Factory rolled out the red carpet, and opened the cave doors, so to speak, for its past weekend events. Studio 54 was the name of the party, and party it was! Jules was transformed back to the 70’s with Samuel Richard skating circles, literally, around bar patrons, and customers and guests dressed to impress even the strictest of door men. Guest DJ Tim Pfleuger was the highlight of the evening, giving us the sounds of way back when! Though Jules was captured by a spotlight; on the other end of the strip, an equivalently large event was happening. When I say large, I mean LARGE! Sound Factory celebrated its infa-

mous monthly Bears on the Backside with special guest DJ Keith Doucet, and bar top dancer Jason, all the way from New Orleans. It was quite a show! Sound Factory has many surprises just around the corner. Mitch Tate, former Jules Manager and SF’s newest manager said, “I am very excited to be a part of the new adventure we are about to embark upon. I am also very thankful to the many people who have supported me through the years as well as with the newest changes to come.” This in mind, Tate has great things in store. “I want to give my guests what they want,” Tate told me, and from the weekly line up, he’s sure to succeed. From Happy Hour all night on Monday, Wednesday night’s Kick Ass Karaoke with host Chad Evans and shot/drink specials call outs, Thursday night’s Drink and Drown bottomless well drinks for $10, Friday’s $2,3,4,5,6 dollar specials lead into Saturday night’s $1 well and domestics, and finally Sunday night’s Drag Bingo and Drag Show with $2 wells from 6-9pm. And with upcoming events like February 20th’s 90’s party, and other scheduled events, it’s a guaranteed night of fun with either a karate kick from Macky, or a witty quote from Mario. But this is only the beginning…

Jules Downtown has many changes coming this year as well. This past fall, new Jules owners Wendy Wallace and Darren Parker decided they needed to take on a new adventure in their life. The purchase of Jules Downtown was such an adventure. For many people in the community this was a major shift. For the first time in nearly ten years, Jules would now be owned by the LGBT community. For many, this is a big deal because they remember what they call the “vintage days” of gay Lafayette. This would be a time from the 1990’s into the early millennium. Parker, who was only a bartender during this time, recently took the time to reminisce. “I remember a time when the bars downtown were a community, our community, and I hope to restore that.” Wallace is equally excited about things to come. “I’m excited about our karaoke night which is every Thursday.” Wallace explained that participants have the opportunity to win free bar tabs or cash, depending on the night. Jules is already infamous for its weekends and it’s no secret that Wallace and Parker have more in store. Mardi Gras will also be an exciting event as Jules and Sound Factory both expand their hours of operation. Mardi Gras here we come! Dust off your tux, tighten up that tie, and shorten that skirt because on Friday, February 12th the Mystic Krewe of Apollo de Lafayette will be holding their annual Mardi Gras Ball at the Heymann Convention Center. Just when you think this fabulous krewe cannot out do the previous year, they always end up doing it again. The theme, Best In Show, is destined to be a memorable night. You can visit their website at www.kreweofapollo.com in order to find

out more information. Tickets are still available but you had better hurry because there aren’t many left. Trust, this is an event you do not want to miss! Fireworks will light up the town on Friday, February 5th, when the Krewe of Carnivale en Rio hosts a spectacle in Downtown Lafayette at Parc Sans Souci. The event begins at 5:30 with Lil Nathan & The Zydeco Big Timers and will be followed by opening ceremonies at 7 with Mrs. Louisiana America. Downtown will then be rocking with Jamie Bergeron & The Kickin’ Cajuns at 7:30. Make sure you get your groove on under the beautiful fireworks displays which will be held at 9:45. On Saturday, February 6th, The Krewe of Carnivale en Rio will be showing us how to celebrate Mardi Gras Brazilian style! At 6:30 their Latin-style parade will role with local high school bands. For more information you can visit www.kreweofrio.com. That same night is Sound Factory’s Mardi Gras Madness. Jazzy up your most fabulous Mardi Gras costume because fabulous prizes are in store for you. The Orchid, known for their trendy gadgets, will be supplying the prizes for the first and second place winners. Don’t forget to stop by Jules and check out their drink specials. With all of these Mardi Gras events, Acadiana’s biggest event is our home state team, New Orleans Saints, going to Super Bowl XLIV! Paint your face black and gold and throw that Saints jersey on because now is the time to butch it up, queens, and for once watch the game for the game and not [continued on 42]

P

urpose, and especially the question of whether our lives are worthwhile goes to the core of human existence. If we are forced to answer that our lives are little more than a self seeking, unexamined progress from cradle to grave then what good are we? What is the purpose of us above that of any other beast that crawls upon the earth? Making ourselves busy - justifying our existence through frantic work may make us feel useful, but ultimately it is meaning and purpose that sets us apart from the daily drudge. It is meaning and purpose that lifts our endeavors no matter what they are – our pleasures and recreation as well as our labor above the mundane. It lifts celebration from booze sodden escapism and into the realms of real joy. It lifts sex above mere physical release and into the profound. Having been ill for nearly two months, and my husband also being ill, I have had to do some very deep thinking about meaning and purpose in order to see this calamity as something other than grief and fear, and see it as blessing. If we are unable to find God in our strife, in our confusion and our daily drudge then God will always elude us. A God that can only be experienced through breathing exercises, or one special type of music, or the company of only one type of people may not be God. It may be God, it may just be peace and quiet, or it may be our own internal space – either way, it will be of limited use in a world that is profoundly UNQUIET, a world where we cannot spend our entire lives in wistful contemplation of the unseen God. We must live in a lively awareness of that same God even when eating, partying, praying or making love (or whatever). It seems to me that if my faith is only any good when times are good then it is no faith at all, and if I believe something today that is disproved tomorrow then I am fortunate indeed, because I will have grown. Finding we are wrong is the most extraordinary blessing, and has saved me from more humiliation and disaster than I care to imagine! I have succeeded in making some pretty horrifying mistakes since coming to New Orleans, but I shudder to think what mistakes I would have made if I hadn’t made the ones I did!! Mistakes hone our purpose, and tease the truth out of our lives. This enforced period of contemplation also reminded me what my church is – what purpose MCC fulfils in the world. It is too easy to get into the ‘church as usual’ mindset and forget that ‘church as usual’ hasn’t been very successful or effective in modeling grace in the world. We have a harder task, and that is to try and create something that may not be more successful, but may well be more truthful. Our task then is not to recreate the churches of our youth or the churches that were taken away from us by homophobia or ignorance – it is something very different, and not something that will either suit

everyone, or be comfortable to everyone. MCC should not see itself in competition with any other church, as it has a unique prophetic call to tell the truth about the lives of LGBT people. This call has for us the nature of prophecy, and for the last 40 years we have been the ‘voice crying in the wilderness’. There is nobody as free as we are to proclaim the love of God in places like bars and bathhouses, to everyone from Divas to Drag Queens and Bears to Go-go boys. We bear a very heavy responsibility to include and celebrate without judgment or disapproval, and to allow God to lead where God will lead. We sometimes fail in this of course, but it is the task that defines us, and once having failed we have to keep trying. When I remember this purpose, this sacred mission, then I am filled again with passion and enthusiasm, and celebrate the privilege of being part of a very strange church indeed – a church strange enough to treat people like human beings and not projects for improvement; to allow the transformation to come from God and not our opinions! Steel Magnolias at Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré

N

o one will ever confuse Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias with great drama. What starts out as a second rate sitcom finishes as a teary Lifetime movie of the week. Yet there’s no denying the script’s phenomenal success. And there’s certainly no denying that Director Holly-Anne Ruggiero and her cast of pros at Le Petit have made as compelling a case for this play as could be asked for. The promotional photos had me worried. From the overdone hair-do’s and make-up, it looked like we would be in for an evening of broad comedy. Instead, Ruggiero and six wonderful actresses found the authentic beating heart in each of the denizens of a small north Louisiana town who regularly congregate in the local beauty parlor. These were women who, with all their quirks and flaws and humanity, came off as lovingly real. Rather than making the doomed Shelby all icky sweetness or some noble princess, Ashley Ricord wisely portrayed her as combative and headstrong as well as warm-hearted and generally sensible, though determined to have a child even if it meant endangering her own life. At the other end of life’s spectrum, Janet Shea found the humor in the flinty Ouiser not by making her a cranky old broad, but by artfully limning the personality of a woman who, despite material comforts, has been warped by her unlucky human relationships. Superbly done, Shea’s Ouiser was prickly and opinionated but not without genuine empathy for her friends’ triumphs and tragedies. Broadway veteran Loni Ackerman, a welcome addition to New Orleans’ theater scene, endowed M’Lynn, Shelby’s mother, with just the right amounts of maternal concern, love and motherly frustration. In this sophisticated rather than showy performance, when Ackerman entered sans make-up after her daughter’s funeral, the result was devastating. Becca Chapman, an actress new to me, made the transformation of Annelle from mousy assistant to brassy goodtime gal to overly faithful parishioner completely credible. As she escaped from a bad marriage to a better life, Chapman never crossed the line into caricature; you may not have agreed with her life choices but this young actress made you understand why this Annelle had made them. As the town’s former first lady and the proprietress of the beauty shop, Cathie Choppin and Leslie Castay, respectively, delivered restrained yet fully formed characterizations in roles that often lend themselves to overkill. As for those hair-do’s, Christopher S. Arthur and Oliver Manhattan’s veritable krewe of wigs were well-tamed by opening night and were convincing as well as revealing of character. Manhattan’s costumes were 1980’s stylish, perhaps a bit too stylish for such a small town, but only a pair of red pumps seemed out of place,

more Oz than Shreveport. Michael P. Kramer’s lyrically realistic set contributed to a final coup de théâtre that will be remembered for many years to come. If you want to be among those who can honestly claim to have experienced this wondrous achievement, these Magnolias will be in bloom until February 6 at Le Petit.

Some Times at the All Ways at the Marigny Theatre

A

ny show that begins out on the street and then takes an audience into the bowels of a theater is all right by me. And Scott Heron’s performance art/dance piece Some Times at the All Ways certainly did just that...and more! Starting on St. Claude Avenue where the rock’n’roll band Agapanthus played on the roof of Heron’s mini-van, Some Times... continued on into the AllWays Lounge where nine actor/dancers portrayed various bar patron (a tuxedo-ed gent, a pregnant lady, a party boy, a drag queen, two lesbian cops, etc.) engaged in stylized, abstract activities (drinking, talking, brawling, etc.) interspersed with moments of bopping to a sissy bounce dance beat. Peculiar and fun. The cast then gathered on the stage to do an exuberant line dance to Cher’s Dark Lady before heading into the Marigny Theatre’s foyer where, amidst a recreation of Café Lafitte’s Love Is In The Air napkin toss, there seemed to be a poltergeist in the box office. Playful and kicky. As we were led into the actual theater, Heron in a mordant, seemingly religious ritual was transformed into a befeathered bird with glittery arms and big, papiermâché feet. Witty and strange. Finally, after Heron has showered as

the audience was settling itself into an impromptu theater on the actual stage of the Marigny, he began a series of dances that beautifully and theatrically, embraced various cliches while turning them on their heads. The actor/dancers reappeared in muted beige outfits to serve as a redoubtable corps de ballet and if the ending was more whimper than bang, there had been plenty of bangs throughout including the marvelous birthing of a baby of smoke. And did I mention bagpiper Luke Brechtelsbauer? Much as I admire Heron’s imagination for creating this visually stunning and viscerally tickling extravaganza, I was most impressed with his delicate, highly polished skills as both a modern and ballet dancer as well as his terrific talents as a mime in the Marcel Marceau tradition. What did it all mean? I can’t say for sure (and I’m not sure Heron can either) but I’ll not forget this theatrical phantasmagoria for a long time.

The Mercy Seat at Actor’s Theatre of New Orleans

W

hat would you do if, all of a sudden, you were given the opportunity to walk away from your life no questions asked? And what would you do if this opportunity came about as the result of the most unimaginable of catastrophes? In Neil LaBute’s The Mercy Seat, Ben decided to stop by his lover’s apartment for a quickie before work one morning. That morning, however, happened to be Sept. 11, 2001 and his workplace was in the World Trade Center. That Ben’s lover Abby is also his boss becomes almost immaterial. Premiering off-Broadway in 2002, The Mercy Seat starred Liev Schreiber and Sigourney Weaver. René J.F. Piazza’s production didn’t have such high-wattage stars but used that to its advantage to create a portrait of two tortured souls. Ben (Jonathan Mares) has a family and knows what he’s doing is wrong. Abby (Margeaux Harbison Fanning) is twelve years older than Ben; she seems to be desperately clutching at straws, trying to avoid the suspicion that this is the last chance she has for love (or what passes for it). Piazza has done well by LaBute before (Some Girl(s), Fat Pig) and got the dialog’s rhythms right in this emotionally abusive relationship. This Ben and Abby seemed to be two people temperamentally unsuited for each other; you wondered how they put up with each after the initial glow of forbidden lust had cooled off. Mares’ Ben and Fanning’s Abby were not trendy Manhattanites, but rather lumpy real people, bridge’n’tunnel folks who somehow found themselves living in the Big Apple’s core. Ben’s a real shit as he picked at Abby’s every utterance, afraid it’s a put down or casts him in a negative light. Yet Mares/Ben apMargeaux Fanning and Jonathan Mares peared haunted knowing inThe Mercy Seat

that any decision he made would have terrible consequences. And Fanning/Abby forged ahead wanting commitment from Ben, unaware that the determination and self-assurance that had served her so well at work would be her undoing in her personal life. On Piazza’s claustrophobic set, he and his cast wonderfully sustained a tension-filled, albeit low-key, mood. If they could have given the play’s opening moments more of an edge, as the situation proceeded, they revealed the neediness and toughness of these characters without resorting to grandstanding. Though LaBute masterfully uncovers the details and layers of this relationship, he falters when things turn confessional and Mercy Seat begins to feel like it’s going around in circles; had the actors modulated their tone a bit more this may not have mattered as much. But for most of its 100 minutes, this was a potent game of emotional cat & mouse that left its players changed forever.

Major Archibald Swelling’s Salvation Salve Medicine Show at the Marigny Theater

F

ull of conviction, when Andrew Vaught spoke as the eponymous Civil War veteran/huckster in Major Archibald Swelling’s Salvation Salve Medicine Show, you believed him. Wearing mutton chops, he looked the part perfectly as he cast a spell and brought the dead back to life. This Cripple Creek production had lots of great ideas floating around in its script but needed more focus and narrative momentum. If it can find a potion which can add those to its mix, it just might have the makings of a delightful off-Broadway show. About two thirds of the way through, however, Major Archibald took a strange turn, grafting a satire of current events and newsmakers onto its Medicine Show. Oh well, anything in which Bobby Jindal (a very good Ian Hoch) looks like the Devil from Jerry Springer, the Opera is all right with me. Throughout this divertissement, William Bowling’s original country/bluegrass music was wonderful as was the four piece band playing it. Someone please hire Bowling & Co. for a production of A Lie of the Mind.

Spooky Dog and the TeenAge Gang Mysteries at Le Chat Noir

T

here’s not much to say about Spooky Dog and the TeenAge Gang Mysteries, a parody by Erik Pilner and Amy Rhodes of the classic Saturday morning cartoon Scooby Doo, Where Are You!, except that it was perfect late night fun. It basically stayed pretty true to the cartoon’s typical plots of the kids thinking a ghost is doing something naughty only to discover it’s an adult masquerading as a ghost doing something naughty. Gary Rucker directed smoothly. Lauren Elens, Richard Mayer, Bob Murrell and Mandi Turner made convincing real life doppelgängers of the cartoon teenagers with an appropriate dose of tongue-incheekiness. Joe Seibert, however, did an absolutely uncanny job of rendering Scooby-speak.
