Ambush Issues Duel Endorsement in State Rep., District 93 Race
E
lection Day is Saturday, May 1 for the important race of Louisiana State Representative, District 93 representing Uptown New Orleans running down river through the Warehouse District, the French Quarter into Treme. Ambush is making a duel endorsement in this race of two worthy candidates, former District 93 Representative Louis Charbonnet (#1 on the ballot); and school board member, former city attorney, Vieux Carre Commission attorney, openly gay Thomas Robichaux (#6 on the ballot). Should there be a run-off, it is scheduled for Saturday, May 29 which is Memorial Day Weekend. Since many will be in Pensacola or on beaches elsewhere, you need to vote in force in the May 1 election.

As a result, we are making the L.I.F.E. program open to anyone living with HIV-disease in the community, not just NO/AIDS clients.” “We’ve seen participants gain amazing results from L.I.F.E.: their highest CD4+ counts since diagnosis, returning to work for the first time in years, or regaining life purpose and long term goals,” said Clayton Robbins, Director of Program Development at the Shanti L.I.F.E. Institute in San Francisco, California, “and many graduates give back to their communities by becoming volunteer facilitators of The L.I.F.E. Program® . Efforts to bring L.I.F.E. to New Orleans began when a past graduate of Fort Lauderdale’s L.I.F.E. Program® moved to New Orleans, advocated for NOAIDS to launch a L.I.F.E. Program® of their own, and offered to volunteer as a facilitator. This project is made possible through a generous grant from The Gilead Foundation. Founded in 1974, Shanti has been at the forefront of a growing national movement to enhance the quality of life for persons living with long-term or life-threatening illnesses by providing volunteerbased emotional and practical support, and national training on the Shanti Model of Peer Support. The Shanti L.I.F.E. Institute provides curriculum development, training, technical assistance, and outcomes evaluation to assist agencies and health departments across the country in offering effective health enhancement programming in their communities. The L.I.F.E. Program® is a health enhancement and wellness counseling intervention that integrates illness prevention, treatment, and medication adherence interventions into an effective 12 or 16 week program. For over 26 years, NO/AIDS Task Force has been providing hope, care and compassion to thousands of men, women and families affected by HIV & AIDS. The Task Force acknowledges that the complications of HIV-disease are not just physical, but mental, emotional and social as well. That is why our agency offers a full spectrum of care at low to no cost, including services such as: an HIV medical clinic, food pantry, home delivered meals, housing, mental health, peer support and many others. NO/AIDS also remains committed to the health of our entire community and reaches over 20,000 each year through HIV prevention education efforts. From 7:30 to 10pm, the Habitat for Humanity Restore will open up its loading dock as a music venue for local musicians, which will include Mohican Scouts. From 9:30pm to 2am, Mimi’s in the Marigny, HiHo Lounge, Saturn Bar, and The MotherIn-Law Lounge will give discounts to all customers who bring in a reusable cup at each destination. ReFest represents the launching of
The ReUse District. The ReUse District is a collaboration between reuse nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations who aim to increase the appreciation and accessibility of reused materials in the 7th Ward, Bywater, Maringy, St. Claude, and St. Roch neighborhoods of New Orleans. The ReUse District currently has 21 members and is spearheaded by The Green Project, Habitat for Humanity Restore, Marigny Green, Preservation Resource Center, Rebuilding Together New Orleans, and St. Claude Main Street. Functioning similarly to an “arts district,” The ReUse District is the first of its kind in the nation. Member organizations range from reused building supply stores to used clothing stores to an urban farm constructed entirely of reclaimed materials. The ReUse District firmly believes that just because New Orleans does not have a municipal recycling program does not mean that neighborhoods, organizations, and individuals cannot recycle in their own way through reuse. More information about The ReUse District can be found at www.thereusedistrict.org.

In the Pink
N
ew Orleanians rejoice, the Crescent City has just opened up its first Pinkberry at 5601 Magazine Street, uptown across from Whole Foods. Here is a little history lesson on this incredible shop. Pinkberry opened its first store in Hollywood in January 2005, when co-founders Shelly Hwang, a restaurateur, and Young Lee, a Parsonstrained designer with a fascination for desserts and frozen treats, blended past inspirations from an Italian gelato store with
the "official" dish ...from 8 In light of the events surrounding Constance McMillen at Itawamba Agricultural High School, the MSSC is also extending a special invitation to the students at that school to join in at the prom. “It was important to us that the students at IAHS receive an invitation to our prom. All students are welcomed,” says Matthew Sheffield, Communications Director of the MSSC. This event is made possible through the generous support of funders, both in and out of Mississippi. These sponsors include MS native Lance Bass, who is both a vocal supporter of Constance and a sponsor of the event. Other major sponsors include Green Day, the American Humanist Association, and Cat Cora. With A-list celebrity event planner Michael Russo of Roses-n-Lollipops at the helm, the prom will be open to Mississippi students ages 15-23, and is sure to be an unforgettable evening for all those in attendance. The Second Chance Prom is just one of the ways the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition and students from all over the state are ensuring that diversity has its place among southern values. More information about the MSSC can be found at our website, www.mssafeschools.org. Any requests for further information regarding media, donations, and/or celebrity attendance should be directed to Michael Russo at mrusso@rosesnlollipops.com.
fond memories of mixing fruit with soft serve at a Hawaiian pineapple plantation. The result was Pinkberry’s perfect marriage of extraordinary taste palates, inspired design and a social experience that indulges the senses. It is tremendous that New Orleans has gotten this noteworthy yogurt establishment. Their frozen yogurt recipe is top secret, but the Swirly Goodness is made with real nonfat milk and real nonfat yogurt that has been certified by the National Yogurt Association to carry the Live & Active Cultures seal. Their hand-crafted flavors, daily cut fresh fruit toppings and carefully selected dry toppings are specifically designed to harmonize with Pinkberry
frozen yogurt, offering an incomparably refreshing, light and craveable taste. Did you know in order to receive the National Yogurt Association’s Live & Active Cultures seal, frozen yogurt is required to contain at least 10 million cultures per gram. Pinkberry significantly exceeds the required amount and contains billions of live and active cultures per serving. All certified yogurts must also contain at least two live and active cultures, lactobacillus bulgaricus and streptococcus thermophilus, which convert pasteurized milk to yogurt during the fermentation process. Pinkberry’s Swirly Goodness not only contains these two cultures, but in California also contains lactobacillus acidophilus, bifid bacterium, and lactobacillus paracasei – providing you with more live and active cultures. I really do not know what all that means, but it has to be more healthier than a twinkie. To date, researchers have found early evidence linking these live and active cultures to a variety of health benefits including support for a healthy immune system as well as joint health and flexibility.
Pinkberry Original is always nonfat, and contains 100 calories per half-cup. The place is bright and spacious with an amazing design. So come and check it out besides everyone should add a little active culture in their lives. My favorite is the Pinkberry with mango, white chocolate chips and a dash of honey. Pinkberry is a decadent way to eat healthier and satisfy your sweet tooth at the same time. For more information, go to www.pinkberry.com or call 504.899.4260.

I love their home and might I also interject that I am so especially thankful that they let me back in their home after that unfortunate Southern Decadence incident a few years back involving water blasters and hot men with wet tee shirts. What can I say, it was Decadence, but I did notice they hid all the breakables. Moving on, the first of the host parties was fun filled with lots of flowing vodka and gorgeous men. I am not quite sure where all these hunky men live because they seem to only come out at these host parties, but who am I to question. DJ Buckley was spinning tunes and the food was once again delicious. Avita Drugs partnered with United Properties-LA to sponsor the first host party and provided an incentive to help attain new hosts. For the first 25 hosts that signed up, $100 was donated toward their dues. It exceeded all expectations and 25 new hosts were signed up at the first event. The cost to become a host is $400 and it is well worth the money. Not only do you get access to four days of fabulous parties, you get to attend these host receptions throughout the year. And the biggest reason of all is that all the proceeds after expenses go to Lazarus House. For more information on becoming a host or Halloween 27, go to www.halloweenneworleans.com.
A Stritch in Time
T
he other night I went to a local watering hole for a little night cap and saw our favorite celebrity transplant, Elaine Stritch, oops, I mean Cathy Fox having a cocktail. Noticing the way she was slinging back the martinis, I knew something must be wrong. “Elaine, sorry, Cathy is something wrong?” I asked pensively. “You’re damn right something is wrong she said flicking her cigarette at the bartender. Who does a woman have to screw around here to get some quality service. I mean in my day, a bartender never lets a lady’s glass go empty.” The bartender brushed off the cigarette ashes from his shirt and brought her another martini with three olives and a tequila shot. She downed the martini like a pro then did the shot, slamming the empty glass back on the bar. Letting out a very audible belch, she looked over at me. There was a sadness in her eyes. “Cathy, what is wrong?” “That damn Sandra Bullock.” Confused, I pressed on. “Sandra Bullock, well what do you mean. What has she done to upset you so much?” “She married that no good cheater that’s what.” “Do you know Sandra or Jesse?” My curiosity was piqued. “Intimately now and my career may be in jeopardy because of it.” Okay, I’ll bite. “Why, whatever do you mean?” Knowing that I just might be entering in a little bit of crazy territory. “It was last August and Bart, my fourth husband, had forgotten to refill the prescription on his little blue pills so he was not in a mood to be bothered by me. And anyone well knows after a show, I am lets just say wired.” I nodded my head not understanding how any of this makes any sense, but she
continued after the bartender brought her another drink. “Well I was feeling a little anxious shall we say so I went for a drive. It was middle of August because I was wearing my summer fur and my damn car stalled by the side of the road. So not only could that louse husband not get it up, he forgot to fill up the gas in the car and my driver was off that night. So there I was in my lovely summer fur, helpless by the side of this desolate street. Can you imagine a big star like me being left so vulnerable.” I rolled my eyes and continued to nod my head. “So I was not there more than two minutes when this man pulled up on his motorcycle, he was all muscles and tattoos and he smelled of whiskey and regret. He asked me if I needed help and I could not help but notice the way he undressed me with his eyes. Being the lady I am, I asked if he could help me start my engine. He leered and asked if I wanted to ride his baby.” “Can I ask before you continue what is a summer fur?” “My dear boy, I am talking about my future and you are babbling about my wardrobe. If you must know a summer fur is white fur, baby seal, albino animal, mostly endangered species. Their fur is the only thing I wear, the way I figure it if god wanted those endangered animals to live he would have made them faster. Now where was I, oh yes, so there I was with this swarthy man on the roadside and then it happened. Before I knew it his beefy tattooed arms engulfed me and my fur fell away exposing my tender naked flesh.” “Wait a minute, you went for a drive naked,” I responded. “I had my fur on, and it was summertime what do you expect me to wear underneath it. So he pushed me against the hood of the car and took me there on the corner of Elysian Fields and Charters. I never felt so exposed in my life, but I threw caution to the wind and now look where it has gotten me.” “I still do not get why you are so upset with Sandra Bullock?” “You know for a writer you are somewhat dense. The man that night was none other than Jesse James.” Trying to stifle a laugh, “Cathy, are you sure, I mean it is a little hard to believe that Jesse James just happened to be riding his motorcycle in New Orleans on that night your car broke down and then he stopped to pick you up.” The look of fury in her eyes said it all. “What kind of common tramp do you think I am, that I would give myself over to a stranger with tattoos and muscles by the side of the road who wasn‘t of merit. No, no, this man was important. Celebrity attracts celebrity, famous attracts famous. It was Mr. James, I am sure of it. But I am not selling my story to anyone with a checkbook. This I will take to my grave. Besides can you imagine the headlines. That Bouvier woman does not tolerate any scandals surrounding the girls in her show and there is always someone waiting in the wings to take your place like that Barbara Ella bitch. And then there‘s Hollywood, who knows how this fallout may affect my career. I am trying to mount another one woman show.” “So you are not going to make a quick buck from one of those trashy tabloids,“ I asked as I watched her polish off her fourth martini with the tequila shot. “Of course not, I am in negotiations for
a Lifetime movie about the incident entitled Elysian Field of Broken Dreams. Who do you think should play me?”
April Book of the Month Selection
I
have two books this month to talk about. The first is a romantic thriller by one of my favorite authors. She writes for women but as a gay man I have to say her books are some of my guilty pleasures. Iris Johnasen has written over thirty novels and is a New York Times #1 bestseller. One of her latest books in the Eve Duncan series is called Quicksand. Her books are very formulaic. A strong willed heroine in some sort of danger has a mysterious and dangerous man come to her aid. She rebukes his advances even though he is totally into her until her desires can no longer be held back and bam, great sex scene. Yes, I know this isn’t high literature but it is fascinating reading and especially the novels that revolve around Eve Duncan who has her own series. She is a forensic sculptor, I mean who does that, really. Her daughter was brutally murdered years ago, so with each book she gets closer to finding her killer. The characters, even though a little overly romanticized, are fun. Her men are always ready for battle and super sexy with high libidos. The villains in these books are truly evil men and it looks like she has a good time writing their storylines. Quicksand is a very good installment in her Duncan series, as Eve is drawn into the mind of a serial killer who may or not be her daughter‘s killer. To find out more about this book and all of her novels, go to www.irisjohansen.com. The second book this month I recommend is a coffee table book entitled Monday Hearts for Madelene by Page Hodel. This visual journey is about one woman’s weekly expression of love to her partner. It is a story of incredible joy and sorrow, but I found it very comforting. When artist, internationally renowned DJ and nightclub promoter Page Hodel found her true love Madelene Rodriguez, she celebrated their happiness by constructing a heart for Madelene on her doorstep every Monday morning for her to discover on her way to work. Tragically soon after they fell in love, Madelene was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and died four months later. Yet Page continues to make these hearts as an outlet and symbol for her undying love. Every one of these hearts is a unique and beautifully photographed art piece. This book is truly an inspiration to others who have had similar circumstances. But I also feel that the underlying message that love never dies touches readers on a more universal level. This book makes the perfect gift for that someone special and the royalties from its sales partially benefit the Women’s Cancer Research Center in Oakland, CA. Monday Hearts for Madelene is released by Abrams Publishing. As with any books, you can find this anywhere but I always urge you go our local LGBT bookstore FAB located at 600 Frenchman Street.

he fabulous show Avenue Q is coming to the Mahalia Jackson Theatre on June 8-13. Avenue Q won three 2004 Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score. I recently got the opportunity to interview one of the cast members, Lisa Helmi Johnason. She plays Christmas Eve (don’t you love her character’s name). Christmas Eve is a straight-talking Japanese therapist who speaks Engrish, which is non-standard variations of English used in Japan. She is engaged to Brian, an out of work Jewish comedian and has no clients because it is implied that she gives poor advice; however, she serendipitously helps several

The Fire Kindled! [Written in response to the Vatican’s assertion that the problem of Catholic child abuse was caused by Homosexuality] Psalm 39 …..I held my tongue, and spake nothing I kept silence, yea, even from good words; but it was pain and grief to me. My heart was hot within me, and while I was thus musing the fire kindled and at the last I spake with my tongue;…… spent most of last week hopping mad. So mad in fact that, like the Psalmist, I didn’t trust myself to speak. Finally, as often happens ‘The Fire kindled’ and out it all came – frustration, anger, even contempt for Cardinal Bertone, The Pope and anyone cold enough to think they can deflect blame by pointing the finger at the weak and the vulnerable. Anger, grief, pain and offense; are these always things to be suppressed? Are we to be marble in the face of fire? Or are we to carry the truth like a brand? Do we suck it all up? Or are we to receive the burning coal like Ezekiel and open our mouths to name the oppressor? If we do this then how may we bear the responsibility? How may we name the oppressor without becoming a bully ourselves? More to the point, what do I do with the anger I feel as a gay man being likened to a predator of children by a broken soul like Cardinal Bertone. Well let’s draw a distinction between individuals and empires, between the brutalisers and the brutalised – Christ did! It would be wrong to hold up Cardinal Bertone as an especial fiend; rather we must look at the structure that suckled him on its sour breast, and the structures that
I
he is trying to defend. ‘By their works you shall know them’ we are told – and here we have to be careful – if we are to pursue a different vision of Christ and the way of Jesus then we have to examine closely and with compassion the catalogue of misery, oppression and outright wickedness that has been the Church. Not the whole church, but the church as expressed through its supreme leaders, not through its faithful folk. But even these leaders are ultimately victims, in the grip of the same dysfunction that permitted the decades of abuse. What is the church? Well I believe it is a Repository of wisdom of the people who follow the way of Christ (sometimes without even knowing it!) It is not a filter of the permissible and impermissible, but a solidarity of compassion that seeks to aid and encourage and inspire the journey with God in Christ - in friendship and fellowship with The Holy Spirit. By doing this, it becomes, in a very real sense ‘The Body of Christ’. Where it doesn’t do this, it ceases to act as The Church and begins to act in its own vested interests. Just because an

LHJ: Christmas Eve is a Japanese immigrant who gives advice to many of the show’s characters but she has a significant language barrier. She is also engaged to Brian who is not very successful. TL: How was it working with puppets? LHJ: It was a challenge at first. It was
a hard habit to break not looking at the puppeteer during a scene and shifting your focus on the puppet. TL: Are there any favorite puppets? LHJ: Well, the puppets all have a great ac-
tors behind them each they have their own unique attributes. I interact a lot with Rod, who is a sweet little Republican investment banker type. TL: How long have you been with the show? LHJ: I have been touring since September. TL: Have you been to New Orleans before and what do you plan on doing when you get here? LHJ: This my first time in New Orleans and we are all very excited. I plan on seeing lots of live music and eating authentic food. Whenever I go to a city, I try to do things native to the area and food and music in New Orleans is the thing to do. TL: If you had to describe Avenue Q to someone who hasn’t seen it, how would you? LHJ: It is hysterically funny. It is a brilliant comedy with lots of heart. It won several Tony Awards and is wonderfully written. It has many beautiful moments that all people can relate to. It is great for people who love musical theatre, but not exactly for children. So get your tickets now for Avenue Q. I already plan on being there opening night. For ticket information, call the box office at 504.287.0351. Have an event or have something of interest to the LGBT community, feel free to send press releases or information to tonymgp@hotmail.com.

the pink pastor ...from 12 organisation calls itself a church does not make it so – as my Grandmother used to say, ‘Christian is as Christian does’. Can there even be a ‘Church Universal’ that is in fact a physical organisation and not a spiritual reality? I am an optimist, and believe that believers in all their diversity are the REAL Church Universal, whether they be Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist or Pentecostal – or even MCC! The Magisterium (the authoritative body of The Roman Catholic Church) can only speak truth and be authentic when it acknowledges that wisdom resides in the people of God, not in the hierarchy of human organisations. ‘Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi’ (a Latin phrase loosely translatable as ‘as the people pray so the Church believes’) refers to the relationship between worship and belief, and is an ancient Christian principle which provided a measure for developing the Christian creeds, the canon of scripture and other doctrinal matters. Of course, the church does not always and everywhere pray in the same context, and therefore a fixed ‘doctrine list’ cannot serve the church in its full diversity. The Church can claim a starting point in faith, but needs to be able to hear about the different journeys and perspectives that the faithful have achieved. It cannot automatically dismiss anything that doesn’t coincide with the comfort of the powerful. We need to remember that those of us who are LGBT Christians or supporters found our inspiration for continuing in faith in the created order (our own flesh, created by God and in which we discern our
sexuality) and in prayer (our relationship with God). It was through this dual foundation that we seek to speak to The wider Church in its error, to heal the Church as it blindly or deliberately wounds the bodies of the innocent and the oppressed. It is not self indulgence or superficiality that causes us to embark upon this task, it is after deep and consistent thought and prayer – open and observant to all God writes upon our minds, our souls and our bodies. SO, what of The Villains? What do we do about the individuals that represent oppression in their teachings and behaviour? Cardinal Bertone is in error, he is also defending a structure of wickedness that expresses it fear and horror of us (LGBT people) as another symptom of a wider malaise - a terror of the flesh that was the means of our salvation in Christ (Jesus was ‘God robed in flesh’ not a ghost or an apparition!). It has a love affair with power and luxury, with decadence and fleshliness (the sheer opulence of The Roman Church) that ironically puts even the wildest orgies into the shade. The sheer ‘indulgence’ represented by the Vatican and the sybaritic trappings of The Magisterium stand like an elephant in the middle of the room. From such wallowings in wealth and excess come cries for celibacy and self restraint; here we see the psyche torn apart by contradiction, we witness priests living lives divided into compartments – and many of those compartments are shut away from the light of God in Christ. When honesty and justice urge us to speak out, we must be very cautious about attacking individuals - we know better. We
cannot demonise the individual that demonizes us – instead we have to dismantle, in a somewhat painful and harrowing process, the edifice that perverted and corrupted those individuals. The plague that comes in the name of God and instead defaces all it touches. We must dismantle the machine that deforms those it claims to heal. In it’s stead we can support and prosper those parts that function well - that work smoothly and cleanly, perhaps we can play a part in creating a user friendly fellowship that looks beyond it’s margins and accesses and celebrates all it’s users and members. The Vatican is in the throws of what the great psychologist Carl Jung called ‘Enantiodromia’ – an extreme position has it in its grip – a position that is irreconcilable with Humanity as God created it, and with the gospel as Christ appears in it. The opposite extreme, of wild abandon, cruelty and self indulgence is clawing its way through the façade and is taking the place of the public face. In its aftermath will come a breakdown of this false virtue - a crisis of faith which may usher in maturity and honesty. Let us pray that the aftermath of this crisis in Catholicism is not more self defence and bitterness, but a faith that can look at itself in the mirror without wanting to claw its face off. What happens to people in the grip of this tentacled, grasping beast is truly torture. It is like a spiritual and moral oubliette, a hole into which victims are thrown and left to become stunted and deformed until they are unable to escape, or even walk. It is a dungeon for the human spirit. It must die, it has to pass away.

Throughout the history of Christianity there have been visionaries that have fled structures of power and control - represented by Bishops and Archbishops, Popes and Cardinals. They have sought God in the quiet places of the world. People like the desert fathers who dwelt in Egypt just a few hundred years after Christ. When one of them asked advice about being made a bishop, the old monk who he had asked said just one word…’Flee!’ I am reminded of William Shakespeare’s famous words from Richard III…. And thus I clothe my naked villainy, With old odd ends, stol’n forth of holy writ; And seem a saint, when most I play the devil. William Shakespeare This of course does not reflect in any way upon the faithful who worship in Catholic churches throughout the world – indeed, they are also victims of the structure that is serving them so badly. Their leadership may clothe its naked villainy, but the average Catholic is, like everyone else, trying to do their best before God. Let us hope their journey becomes easier not harder with the conclusion of this current crisis. Rev. Clinton Crawshaw is the full-time pastor of The Big Easy MCC. They meet every Sunday at 1pm (liturgical service) and at 5pm (Praise and Worship) at 1333 S. Carrollton Avenue. Qualified, Openly Gay Candidate: Thomas Robichaux
S
ince the days of Larry Bagneris running for LA Legislator, it has been a long time finding another qualified, openly gay candidate who has experience in government. Many of us know Thomas as the first openly gay school board member. Some of us in PFLAG knew Thomas first as John’s dad. Thomas believes District 93 is the most important District in the State of Louisiana. He believes in a renaissance for Louisiana starting in New Orleans, and vows to be not just a voice but a force for the betterment of the people of our great city. His pledge is to make all people proud to have him as their representative. Thomas has a three part campaign platform. First is Crime/Education Reform. He says, “we cannot arrest ourselves out of our crime problem. We can only educate ourselves out of our crime problem.” He thinks that education reform and more money to better train more police officers, is the key to healing most of our social woes. We need to give the next generation a fighting chance to fix problems that have been left behind and to do that, “we owe them an education.” Second is Foster Care Program. And this is how PFLAG came to know Thomas because he adopted a child from the foster care system. Thomas says, “the bureaucrats in Baton Rouge treat orphans and foster children with distain and contempt.” Thomas met John when John was 16 years old. He had been abused by his family and then by the State. At 17 years old, John became his foster child. And at 18 years old, John went through an adult adoption. John and Thomas are a family. This is a beautiful end to a rare situation where Thomas says, “we spend more to house a dog in a kennel per day than we spend on caring for our foster children.” Thomas wishes to change this as it is our duty as a society to our children. Third is Coastal Restoration. “Having grown up in LaFourche Parish hunting and fishing on the coast, I have personally observed the horrific effects of coastal erosion. Every oil company that cuts a canal through the marshes is required to fill in that canal when the well is finished. Not one canal has ever been filled in.” Oil companies must be made responsible to do what is right for our state to reverse coastal erosion. TP: What makes you a better candidate? TR: Background in constitutional law makes me more qualified. I set a precedent for the city while in law school. I have passed a half dozen laws and blocked a half dozen more during my time as City Attorney. I am ready to step into the job without months of wasted learning time. As a city attorney, I was the ONLY one who worked for three weeks in Baton Rouge immediately after Katrina and then for three months on the cruise ship for the city. I am
experienced in Constitutional and Charter Law. I am experienced in government operation. TP: What is most important about this election? TR: Simple, this is the most important district in the State of Louisiana. It is necessary to have experience, and only two of the five people running have any experience at all. An important quality of this election is that I am openly Gay and the time has come for the entire GLBT community to come together and vote for one of their own. I am Gay and qualified. When one peer is elected, others will follows. It has been like that across the country. The Gay community needs to stop being complacent. TP: What are some of your thoughts about current trends? TR: I am pleased with the riverside park. It will increase the quality of life in neighborhoods, and increase property values. I am also pleased with the Louisiana Port Authority IF there is a strong balance and New Orleans is recognized as the leading port in the State. We also need a balance between the port and Green Space. There is 100 miles of river offering port facilities – 25 miles below and above New Orleans on either side of the river. I am also in favor of the high speed train between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. TP: What other duties have you had beside City Attorney? TR: I was the attorney for the Vieus Carre Commission. I have been fighting for the preservation of New Orleans neighborhoods and the French Quarter in particular. I was responsible for saving the Tricou House at 711 Bourbon St. This was the first house on the National Register in New Orleans and it was being taken apart. I fought to have it rebuilt to its former glory using the same bricks that had been taken down. I worked with the VCC and other bodies to make the laws of preservation more clear. I worked on the property tax code for city and state. TP: Is change important? TR: Yes, especially for the GLBT community in the city and state. We must take advantage of a new renaissance. There is much to do and we need to be involved. I’d like to say again that we cannot abandon the port. For years we were second port in the world, where are we now – Houston and Mobile and even Gulfport took much of our business. We need to modernize our port. TP: You have a lot to say. How are you going to get your message out? TR: I believe the debates will show that I am more qualified and knowledgeable. This is a grass roots campaign so I’ll use FaceBook, Twitter, house parties, and walk from door to door. I’ve already gone through three pair of shoes. I want the Gay community to know that I am a single Gay man; I am a parent
of an adopted son, member of the Youth Violence Prevention Advisory Board and Chair of the School Board Accountability and Charter School Committees. I believe in our future and I’ll fight for our present. TP: May 1st is Election Day, and the run-off is May 29th which is Memorial Day. Since you will be sunning in Pensacola on
the 29th, you need to vote in force on the 1st. Thomas received his Bachelor’s degree from UNO. He is a Fellow, Institute of Politics, Loyola University. He received his Juris Doctor, Chapman University School of Law. You can contact Thomas and volunteer by going to www.thomasrobichaux.com.

Just Bite Me!
L
ast week was just one of those weeks from hell here at Ambush! You can imagine our dilemma when we were unable to connect to the web or receive or send email for four days. All of this due to an update we received on our new computers with Windows 7. Apparently the update changed the configuration on our router leading to a virtual halt to business. After trying to find reliable computer techs in New Orleans about six months ago, we decided to give Ambush advertiser JDiT (JDit.US) out of Baton Rouge a call. Between Jerry Durden and Nate Dronette of JDiT, we have found that these guys really know what they are doing. They helped us in selecting the right computers for our network, installed them, fixed the numerous compatibility issues with Windows 7 and the programs we had, and helping us find replacement programs for those that no longer worked. Between Windows 7 and Adobe updates, it has been a nightmare. After practically every update, the configurations on many of our program exe files would change making them inoperable. And that was the problem when the configuration on our router was changed, making the Internet unavailable to us. Once Jerry and Nate arrived they had us up and running in less than an hour. You may think it’s pricey to have out of town techs. Even though you pay a travel fee, you will find that it takes JDiT less time to complete the job than any other techs we have ever hired, thus saving you money in the long run. Everyone has those weeks that make you want to scream, so we join you when it happens to you with a big JUST BITE ME! It gets so much better if you head on out for a cocktail or two!

t was quite a weekend, three krewes and four functions. Starting out on Friday, the Opal and Dar Dar travel service (as in King Cake Queen Opal Masters and honey Darwin Reed) picked us up on Bourbon heading out to South Carrollton Avenue. It was a lovely soiree at the fifth generation home of Charles Kuntz. The grandeur of this home was reminiscent of Napoleon III’s lavish apartments in the Turgot Pavilion at the Louvre in Paris. grand dining room had a marvelous menu with smoked salmon and rare beef tenderloin among the culinary delights served. Petronius will be hosting it’s annual bal masque on Saturday, February 12, 2011 celebrating the krewe’s 50th year. Saturday brought us back to the sexy days of Rome for Lords of Leather’s annual Toga Party. Every kind of toga prevailed from the very skimpy to the very comical and grand. Lord King Allen and his entourage of cute gladiators greeted guests as they arrived at JohnPaul’s. When Miss Louisiana Leatherette was questioned about the glamourous material her toga had been made from, she quickly chirped back that is was a gift from her dear friend Cleopatra. Yes, this was a serious evening of imagination. The more we drank the better the stories we now remember got. If y’all missed this party, y'all will surely want to make it next year. But don’t fret, the krewe (LordsOfLeather.COM) will hold many functions that you can join in leading up to their 28th bal masque on Sunday, March 6, 2011. Following the Toga Party, Marcy Marcell led her bevy of stars on stage for the Golden Age Revue. The Mystic Krewe of Satyricon kicked off Sunday afternoon with the krewe’s 8th Spring Rush Party. Hosted at one of the Quarter’s most popular spots, 700 Club, Captain Tony Leggio, President Ted Jeansonne and King Satyricon Paul Metoyer greeted fellow krewe members and new pledges. It was a fun afternoon with friends, good food, and best of all, great cocktails prepared by bar baron Mike “Cookie” Cookmeyer himself. The krewe (MysticKreweOfSatyricon.COM) will hold it’s 8th bal masque on Friday, February 25, 2011. It too will have many functions leading up to the ball that you can join in. Although we were unable to make it, Cathy Fox hosted Divas Among Us 2 later that afternoon at JohnPaul’s. Benefiting St. Anna’s Food Bank, this was Cathy’s second fundraiser as the Lords of Leather’s Miss Louisiana Leatherette raising $2,000. The first Divas Among Us raised $1,800 for St. Anna’s Food Bank. It was reported to be a show stopper featuring the talents of FourPlay’s Elizabeth Bouvier, Lauren Brown, King Cake Queen XVI Tami Tarmac, Zsa Zsa d’LaHor, Krewe of Petronius’ Bootsie DeVille, Gizelle Bouvier, Queen Amon-Ra XLV Countess C. Alice, Bubbles Champagne, Josie Mae Cotton, Laurence LeSage and Queen Petronius XLIX Natasha. Congratulations Cathy and all the girls who gave their talents for this worthy cause.

fter a leisurely stroll down Royal Street peering in the windows to see the new pieces of estate jewelry, a little window shopping if you please, we made it to our bank. Once our transactions were complete, it was time for cocktail hour. First on our afternoon crawl was The Double Play on Dauphine at St. Louis. Trevor was behind the bar, and we joined the other customers there for a few laughs with the “Ellen” show. Trevor’s looking mighty spiffy with his new summer cut, hair that is. We got a chance to chat with Terry, Chester and a few others before moving on to our next destination. A short walk brought us to The Corner Pocket where we found David preparing cocktails here. Decorator extraordinaire Gerry was having a couple after work. Bar Baron Jay came in a little later followed by partner Michael, so it gave us a chance to visit with two of our oldest friends in the city. Then in pops the lovely Miss Ashlee, always a charmer! Of course she thought we might have brought her a little snack, but today was not her lucky day. Double Play bartender Tommy came in after moving in more items to his new apartment across from the Pocket on Burgundy. It was a nice visit with all. Heading to North Rampart, we took a right going towards Society Page. Unfortunately it was early afternoon and the club wasn’t open yet. A right on Toulouse brought us to Burgundy, where we took a left towards 700 Club. Here bartender Matt was doing the honors. We had a chance to look over the works by Goddess, April Artist of the Month. They’re quite eclectic. Then it was off on St. Peter back to North Rampart and right to Starlight By The Park. We practically never miss a Monday here, because our dear sister Marcy Marcell is holding court behind the bar. It was indeed a treat today since Regina Adams, Jack Saucier and Linda Lucky were among the celebs here. Marcy always has the latest dish, even if she might be in the middle of it sometimes.
Pool, Hot Tub, Sauna
I
t's time to get on over to The Country Club in the Bywater. With there huge pool and hot tub, the club now offers a state of the art sauna. Beautifully done, the sauna is in the old gym location. The day we stopped in was Drewsday as in Tuesday with fun-loving Drew each week. We met Kenny who gave us a shot of him going into the all new sauna. Bert was not far from the action and when Drew and Bert get together, there's always fireworks. Manager Heath showed us some of the original artwork used to advertise The Country Club years ago. He's used these nostalgic images and incorporated them in today's ads. According to there website, TheCountryClubNewOrleans.COM, "Chef Coy LeBeau has found his way to our heart, of course, through our tummy." And get ready as Chef LeBeau introduces an all new summer menu. Keep on the lookout for details. You can still get your annual pass for only $299. Don't forget to watch Treme Sundays, 9pm, in the club and poolside!

Back to Basics
L
ast week I discussed a new bar opening in Red Stick in order to keep you up to date on what is happening in our city. This doesn’t indicate or mean that I have forgotten the older bars around town. It’s difficult to get everything in one column because I have a limited amount of space to fill. At any rate, I want to share thoughts this week on George’s, the oldest in the city and perhaps one of the best in the state. That’s saying a lot, but let me elaborate a little. You have to remember that I have been writing about activities in Red Stick for a long time, and regardless of where I
go or who I meet, I always have a tendency to return to the basics. In my case, it’s George’s. At one time, I would have had to add The Mirror Lounge to that statement, but that one disappeared a long time ago. Lots of bars have come and gone for one reason or another, and some have changed their names, but George’s has never changed. It’s the rock in a sea of everchanging times. My connection with George’s started back when George was still alive, and his house was across from the bar in what is now the parking lot. The inside of the bar has been updated but has changed very little. I like this about the atmosphere. It’s like being able to return to something that
means a lot to you, like returning home. Regardless of where I go or what bars I visit in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, or Lafayette, I always return to where I first started. It is a kind of stability in a world and a city that is constantly changing. When I ran into Richard last month at George’s, it was like a family reunion. It was a mutual display of friendship that goes back a long time. I’m not sure he liked me when we first met. I, however, thought he was one of the cutest guys I’d ever seen, and in order to try to get a conversation started one afternoon, I asked him for a cigarette. I must have caught him at the wrong time because he wasn’t that nice. Of course, I shouldn’t have asked to bum a cig, but it was what I thought would be a nice way to get to know him better. Let me just say that the good friend status didn’t come about right away. Shortly after this incident at George’s, I was having a drink at The Mirror Lounge after it had moved around from North Boulevard to Third Street. I think it was Steve

hot tails of red stick ...from 25 that was working that day, and there were a few others there but I don’t recall who they were. At any rate, Richard was being very frisky that day, and I guess it was his time to try to start a conversation with me. I was shocked into reality when he pulled out his weenie and showed it to me. I told him to put it away. I wasn’t interested. You would have thought I gave him the maximum insult. Richard stormed out of the bar, jumped in that white Cadillac, and burned rubber all the way down the street. Whatever happened after that must have been fantastic because we have never had anything but mutual love and affection for each other from about that time until now. It’s like a family reunion when we see each other. I can’t say the same for Guy. He is one of my best friends but I’m sorry to say that I don’t ever recall him being at the bar about the time I met Richard. I’m sure he was, but we just didn’t click. Maybe I was too interested in the bartender from False River who worked there. I know I had the hots for Chuck, who was driving over from Lafayette to work at the bar. Chuck is another friend who was fun to be around for years after that. As all good things, they sometimes end tragically, and his death had an impact on me and all his close friends. He was such a wonderful human being. I still think of him a lot. The memories will always be with me. Back to Guy, I have to say that he slowly appeared on the scene. I just knew he belonged to Richard, and the trust and friendship grew from this relationship. Chansley came along much later as have
so many great bartenders, but she too is now a part of the George’s family that means not only a lot to me but to so many people who keep returning week after week to partake of all the good times you find at a bar that truly can say is the one with the personal and friendly touch. Somehow George’s just reaches out to you and welcomes you back with open arms. It is truly one of the best you will find anywhere, and I’ve been to a lot of bars in my lifetime. I just never felt the same anywhere else no matter how nice the bar was or is to this day. Maybe it’s Richard. I rather think it is more Guy and Chansley now, and I’m not counting out Luther or Michael who I have known for a long time. Whatever it is, I believe that returning to the basics is what life is all about. It’s a comfort zone. It’s George’s.
Jared at Last
J
ared has worked at George’s for quite some time, but I never really sat down and talked with him until last week. Maybe I should just invite him along on some of the dinner dates with Luther and Gerry. After all, he’s my neighbor in Spanish Town and a cute one too. Jared is from a little town called Glenmora up in Rapides Parish, but he ended up moving to Shreveport where he worked as a bartender at Central Station. After his education was completed, he became a probation/parole officer for the state, but he is now attending LSU to complete a degree in Human Resource Development. He only has 20 hours left, and this is proving to be the longest in that

hot tails of red stick ...from 27 quest for the next degree. While he was talking, I studied his facial expressions and the way he seemed to enjoy sharing a little of his life with me. His gorgeous blue eyes are exceptionally expressive as he talks, and with each word comes the feeling that you are in the presence of a very special human being. His personality is absolutely wonderful, and his sense of humor is touching and leaves you wanting more. I’m going to have to get to know this one better. He will have to come to dinner with us, or I’ll just pick Luther’s brain for more info about him. When someone sexy as Jared appears on the scene, you immediately want to know more about them. It is his wit and charm that is such an Jared asset to George’s. Even if I had never been there before, I’d return just to see Jared. He has a type of magnetism that draws you to him and leaves you wanting more. I certainly do. I’m sure I’ll have more to tell you later about this one, and I might have to check in with the new bartender too. I haven’t met Richard yet. He just seems to be another excellent example of how Guy can pick such outstanding bartenders. It is a sign of great management expertise and a desire to bring the best to every customer who enters the door. Or maybe I should credit Chansley with this. Whatever the case may be, it is often the bartenders who determine who will return and who won’t. I only know one thing – George’s really has some great ones now.
Still Splashing
I
had a long talk with Cory last week too. Every time I go to Splash, I see more improvements, and I like what I see. Cory is just one of those entrepreneurs who knows how to manage a business and keep it moving ahead with the times. I actually wanted to check out the place now that my dream stud Lance is no longer there. I’m just hoping everything goes well with Lance and the new love of his life. He is so deserving of happiness. We didn’t get into the gossiping that much. I mainly wanted to check things out. I never know if I’m going to see unusual decorations, new lighting, learn of new sound equipment, or find out about something one of the bartender studs there has been up to. I usually try to tackle them one on one, and I’m overdue a tackling session, especially with Stephen. I’m looking forward to the big Pimp and Ho Ball (along with a contest) to be held on Friday, April 30th. Cory was very cheerful while I was there. He was actually helping David with things when I arrived. I noted so many posters about upcoming events, and they all look like great events in their schedule. I’ll have to check into all these further and get back with you on them. It is difficult for me to get out every night to check out the bar scene. I’m a full-time writer, and that takes up lots of my time. It’s all freelance, but it is still important to me so I can’t spend every night checking things out when I have deadlines to meet. Maybe one of these days, I can accompany Cory on a trip to Austin and surprise Lance. That would be great. Or I just might head over that way myself. I know someone else there, namely Doug, who I would like to connect with again. He wanted new scenery and moved away to find his space in Texas. Perhaps he will read this and send me a sign. In the meantime, be sure to check out Splash. They have some great shows planned.
good hugger too, and I hear she is just starting a new job. I learn as much about Joy on Facebook as I do in person, but it is nicer when you can sit down with a nice drink and chat with her. I need to talk to the other new bartenders too. I have met one, but as I recall, Joy said there were two new guys working there. I’m in the habit of stopping in when I see Jeannie’s car parked out front, but she has been out with that broken hip lately, and I’ve neglected to stop in. It is nice to know that Hound Dogs is so close. That way, I don’t have to drink and drive. I can drink and walk. I told you previously about my neighbor who was walking down the street early one morning. I asked where he was going so early. He told me his truck got drunk the previous night, and he had to go pick it up.
Big Party
A
bar down in Prairieville was the setting for a triple birthday party for Phil, Billy and Little John. They were all 29 again and counting, but it turned out to be really fantastic for everyone who attended. I know one thing for sure. Any event that includes Colla has got to be special – and he was a guest, not a birthday boy. Colla is one of the most beautiful guys on the planet – both physically and mentally. He isn’t pretty. He is outrageously handsome. But, I have to say that he is pretty from one end to the other and all points in between. I’ve known him for many years, and he is just one of those special friends that you can always depend on. He has a heart of gold, and a personality that can charm the pants off anyone. Oops! Did I reveal too much there? Well, what the heck! You get my drift. Colla is just a rare and wonderful guy, and I have always loved him dearly. Love is respect when it comes to friendships, and that is what has been between me and Little John all these years. This is another guy who has a great way of charming you with his great personality, and he definitely falls into the great friendship category. I was so pleased when he finally met his partner for life. Phil is a perfect match for him, but I never had that figured out in advance. Now I can look back and wonder why it didn’t happen sooner. You don’t find them any nicer than Phil. Ronnie is another cutie who came into my life several years ago. I’ve actually known his partner Billy longer, but once you see them together, you realize you are in the presence of another loving couple. Billy used to live in one of those shotgun houses on 8th Street between North Street and Laurel Street. I guess I met Ronnie at another birthday party, right there in the street in front of the house. It was also a birthday party where the honoree couldn’t stay out of bed long enough to come to his own party. However, that didn’t bother us. We knew Ronnie was there, and we knew it was love. Those of us on the street were more in lust over what was going on inside. What a party! I’ll never forget it. At any rate, I’m glad everyone had such a great time, and I’m sorry I couldn’t be there, but my weekend was filled with meetings and

hear Luther is now attached. Does this mean you have to get permis sion to dine with me and Gerry? If so, we can also pull in a substitute – like Jared. Let me know, sweetie. I met another cutie (and taken already) last week. His name is Pat, and he is a specialist in sound techniques. I didn’t get to talk with him that long, but I did learn that he was off to the islands for a week. Now that is my kind of guy. I love the islands. I need to talk with Michael again soon. I’ll have to call Chansley and see what his work days are. I need to be updated on his new love interest. I’ve seen pictures but haven’t heard all about it. Jeremy has the nicest hugs. I love to see him at George’s because I know a good squeeze is coming. Luther and Gerry are talented in the squeeze department too. Mark, who lives above Capital Grocery in Spanish Town, is leaving our city for the bright lights of Washington, D.C. Congratulations my friend. I wish you well. I’m sorry I can’t attend your big going-away party at Hound Dogs, but I have something else already scheduled. Be sure to check out the next issue of Ambush for the latest on new bar Cajun Cove, Baton Rouge’s newest entertainment venue. It is going to be a fun place, and you are going to like what you see. The owners have big plans to make you want to visit them again and again. That’s about it for a while. I’m planning a trip to Lafayette soon. I haven’t seen John in a while, and I’m in need of an update on what is going on with him at the Sound Factory and Back Side. I wouldn’t mind going to Crystal’s in Lake Charles either, but after a few drinks I’d have to stay over. So – I’ll stay over. Now who should I take with me? Hmmm.

Festival & Other Events
B
y the time you read this Festival International de Louisiane will have come and gone. Hopefully many of you who are not from around the area have made the pilgrimage to Lafayette and engaged yourself in the many fun opportunities that not only downtown Lafayette has to offer but Acadiana as well. Lafayette has a plethora of culture and is constantly growing. From the many local shops sprouting up in the River Ranch area to the array of restaurants and art galleries scattered around the downtown area, there is always something interesting to experience. There is no doubt that the community of Lafayette is thriving and heading in the right direction. On May 1st, downtown Lafayette will be hosting Crouchstock in Parc International. Crouchstock, which is a tribute to
life’s happiness, will be featuring Cowboy Mouth. Crouchstock is in memory of 24 year old Jacob Crouch, who in 2005 took his own life. This incident came as a surprise to the friends and family of Jacob Crouch and caused the realization that there is a major need for suicide awareness in our community. Suicide is the second major death threat among collegeage students and ranks number eleven in the nation overall. For those who are able to survive and move forward from the struggles of suicide, they often face stigma, misconception, and judgment. The Jacob Crouch Foundation works hard to prevent suicide, raise awareness and education, or support for those contemplating suicide, as well as support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Celebrate the happiness of life on Saturday, May 1st, at Parc International which is located on Garfield Street in downtown Lafayette. Doors open at 4:30pm, admission is $10 at the gate or free before 6pm. VIP tickets are available for $75. More information can be found at www.injacobsmemory.com. Art Walk is an attractive experience for those who have free time to roam downtown on a Saturday afternoon. Art Walk occurs every second weekend of the month and features the talents of local
artists. Art galleries are typically heightened with foot traffic by 6pm and are happy to entertain with free wine and hors d’oeuvres. By the end of Art Walk, if you haven’t loaded too much on hors d’oeuvres feel free to check out the many restaurants that are in the area. You can find an array of cuisine options from Latin American, Mexican, Spanish, Italian, Greek, American, sushi, and seafood.
DJ Kyle D Returns
O
n Saturday, May 1st, Sound Factory will feature a blast from the not so far distant past, DJ Kyle D. As many of you will remember, DJ Kyle D recently stepped down as the in-house DJ at Jules Downtown. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with DJ Kyle D and discuss his return to downtown. Joey Collins: With a return to downtown Lafayette, what sort of changes do you see within yourself and your music that bar patrons can look forward to? DJ Kyle D: I’m really excited about playing a little bit more to the crowd by giving them what I feel that they want. My passion is to make the crowd excited and allow them the opportunity to have fun through the music in which I play. I hope to help generate a crowd at Sound Factory. I also plan to take any requests from the crowd as well. JC: Within the past four months when you’ve been absent from the scene, what other places have you had the opportunity to play and in what way have they since influenced you and your music? DJKD: I’ve spent time traveling to
other cities along the Gulf Coast and also have had the opportunity to play in many straight bars as well. I’ve noticed that in contrast, our bars should be as diverse as the others. Being nonconforming is what makes us who we are. We are a very diverse community and should embrace it. I would rather be diverse and mix it up and be fun. I enjoy being a bit different and not conforming to the many other bars downtown. JC: What sort of genre of music can the crowd look forward to? DJKD: Definitely no techno. Despite a rumored belief, I do not play techno, never have, and never will. I enjoy playing house music. Since my departure from Jules I’ve grown accustomed to more main stream pop and dance music. I’ve learned that is one of the main things the crowd loves and I hope to deliver much excitement to them. JC: I hear you recently have produced an album with your favorite mixes. What was your main influence when composing this album and what can people expect from it? DJKD: As always when I mix any new tracks I think of the excitement that will be generated through the music. This is what I thrive on the most. The album will have a mixture of tracks that I feel people will enjoy and I’ve worked hard to produce. So far I’ve heard nothing but raves from those who have bought the CD. JC: Will you be the exclusive DJ at Sound Factory or will you be featured at other places as well? DJKD: I am never exclusive. I always love the experience of being the DJ at

other bars. It gives me the opportunity to explore other crowds and understand how they relate to music as well. I can say that I will be at Sound Factory for at least two nights out of the month. In order to provide more variety for Sound Factory, for now I prefer to play for two really good nights as opposed to every single night. JC: How do you, on a personal level, feel about your transition from Jules Downtown to Sound Factory? DJKD: My fondest memories are with Jules Downtown and they will always be missed. This was a very wonderful chapter of my life. For now it’s time to move on and be the DJ I can be. I recently took the time to listen to DJ Kyle D’s newest CD which is entitled Spring Fever. The CD is composed of 13 tracks filled with creative mixes that are perfect for your next drive to Baton Rouge or New Orleans. DJ Kyle D delivers what he said he would, many new house mixes as well as pop and dance. I personally enjoyed listening to his mixed tracks of the popular singles such as Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment and Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance as well as dance mixes to the latest Taio Cruz single featuring Ludacris, Break Your Heart. I particularly enjoyed the track entitled Drama Queen. The CD is available for purchase for $10 and for now can be purchased directly from DJ Kyle D. There is also a possibility that the CD will be available for purchase in the bar in the near future as well.
Bar Spill
J
ules Downtown recently experienced a crowd when the Jose Cuervo girls showed up with free tequila shots for the entire crowd. It was such an experience that even the bar-top dancers had to get involved in the fun. Valarie Sugarbaker also hosted yet another provocative show. Jules owner, Darren Parker, expressed to me, “We hope to continue with the traditional bar-top dancers each weekend. It seems like an exciting attribute to the bar that really gets the crowd excited.” If you haven’t joined the Jules Facebook group then now is the time to do so. It’s the best way to find out real-time information on daily drink specials and surprising events. Don’t forget to turn in your best Jules picture from the festival. The categories are as follows: Best group picture at the bar, best drunken picture at the bar, best outfit picture for festival. First place in each category will receive a free $50 bar tab. In order to guarantee your entrance into the contest, make sure you tag Jules in your Facebook photo(s) or post directly to the Jules Facebook wall. Sound Factory hosted a great crowd when St. Cecilia performed a live concert. This was the first time St. Cecilia was given the opportunity to perform at the Sound Factory venue. The crowd seemed to be pleased and rocked the night out into the early morning hours. As always the infamous Sunday Fundays will continue to light up the close of a fun-filled weekend. Come out for drink specials and the weekly drag show. Besides the return of DJ Kyle D on May 1st, other upcoming events are in store for Sound Factory patrons. Saturday, May 8th will feature the ROU Pageant which will be followed by a Hawaiian Luau on Satur-
day, May 15th. Look forward to the return of St. Cecilia on Friday, May 14th. Don’t forget that on Saturday, May 22nd, Sound Factory will host its monthly Bears on the Backside. Make sure you continue to follow Sound Factory on Facebook because many events are destined to pop up throughout the week.
Gay Culture Hits the Stage
S
tarting on May 20th Cite Des Art Theater, located at 109 Vine Street in the downtown Lafayette area, will feature a performance based on the first Lafayette gay cabaret bar. Chez Gisele is a drag musical comedy noire and a tribute to a lovely French woman, Gisele Carriton, who lived from 1928 to 2008. Gisele, under much public turmoil, opened up her bar, Chez Gisele, during the late 1960s through the early 1970s. This was an era of escalating civil rights for gays and African-Americans who poured much support into Gisele’s efforts of creating a safe and accepting place for all people. Gisele was put into the spotlight by a local bigot with political ambitions, Mucky Raker. Raker used his media connections to slander Gisele and build a consensus of hatred directed at her personally; calling her a madam and her establishment a house of male prostitution. Unfortunately, in fact, a murder of an employee occurred in the parking lot of Chez Gisele. During this time period the murder of a gay person carried very little interest to police and the judicial system. This has left the murder, to this day, unsolved. Despite the outside tragedies that would occur, Gisele created a happy and loving atmosphere for her guests. She would use colorful expressions to lighten up the people around her and made sure that everyone, regardless of who they were, felt welcomed. Come observe a time period in Lafayette history when it wasn’t safe for the LGBT community to be who they are, express who they are, and take part in something that many take for granite on a daily basis. Opening night is May 20th and the final performance is May 30th. Performances are at 7:30pm with Sunday’s matinee performance at 2:30pm. Tickets are $10 for students and senior citizens and $15 for general admission. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 337.291.1122.
