I
n the past, it has been tradition for the reigning Southern Decadence Grand Marshals (SDGMs) to host a brunch honoring all former grand marshals, but this year there was a twist. SDGMs XXXVI Toby Lefort and Julien Artressia hosted the first ever Southern Decadence Grand Marshals Dinner in one of the ballrooms at Harrah's Hotel. It was a lavish affair and quite an honor to be an invitee. Following the dinner, the grand marshals were whisked away by shuttle for their annual bar crawl. s Rip and Marsha NaquinDelain celebrated their 36th anniversary on August 17, they presented a $3,180 check to Buzzy's Boys & Girls rep Marty Curtin at The Friendly Bar. The funds were the total proceeds raised at the 23rd annual Gay Appreciation Awards benefiting the local New Orleans charity.

fficial Southern Decadence XXXIX Celebration of Gay Life, Music & Culture, is expected to bring in over 125,000 revelers for this year’s weekend long celebration. Numerous hotels in the French Quarter are already booked solid, and event downloads at SouthernDecadence.COM are topping 25,000 weekly. Southern Decadence begins on Wednesday, September 1 and runs through Labor Day, Monday, September 6. In 2009, the celebration brought in over 100,000 revelers with a projected economic impact of over $150 million to the local economy in New Orleans. The weekend ranks in the top 5 celebrations held in the city. The 2010 celebration will be led by Southern Decadence Grand Marshals (SDGMs) XXXVI Toby Lefort and Julien Artressia. 1st Knights of Decadence Welcome Parade Friday, Sept. 3

outhern Decadence Grand Marshal Toby Lefort has organized the first Knights of Decadence Welcome Parade on Friday, September 3 at 7:30pm. The parade is slated to have fourteen floats and two jazz bands. The parade starts on Elysian Fields @ Royal, down Royal to Esplanade, left on Esplanade to Decatur, right on Decatur to St. Louis, right on St. Louis to Bourbon, right on Bourbon ending at Dumaine at Cafe Lafitte in Exile.
SDGM Drag Show Kicks Off on Friday, Sept. 3

more. Southern Decadence Grand Marshals (SDGM) XXXVI Toby Lefort and Julien Artressia will be introduced and toasted by Southern Decadence Susan Lucci's Rip and Marsha Naquin-Delain at 2pm. At this point the grand marshals will address the crowd and then kick off the parade. Once the parade kicks off, the grand marshals will stop at each bar on the route for 10 to 15 minutes. Since the parade has grown so much, the City of New Orleans has required a parade permit for the past twelve years. The Southern Decadence Grand Marshals have changed the route slightly this year. The parade leaves Tubby’s Golden Lantern at 2pm going up Royal to St. Louis, turning right on St. Louis, right on N. Rampart, right on Toulouse, left on Burgundy, left on St. Peter, right on N. Rampart, stopping at St. Ann, then right on St. Ann, and left on Bourbon ending at Cafe Lafitte in Exile.

apoleon’s Itch, 734 Bourbon St., host the 7th Bourbon Street Extravaganza on Saturday, September 4 at 5pm. The free live concert is at the corner of Bourbon and St. Ann Streets. This year’s event promises to be bigger than ever according to promoter Chuck Robinson bringing the talents of Deborah Cox, Jeanie Tracy, Erika Jayne with 12 dancers, Kimberley Locke and Damian Faul plus many surprises, to the concert stage.

Decadence
O
scar Wilde (the nineteenth century British poet and playwright imprisoned for homosexuality) gave a very insightful definition of Decadence; “Classicism is the subordination of the parts to the whole; decadence is the subordination of the whole to the parts.” The more usual definition of the word is less flattering, it is; 1. A process, condition, or period of deterioration or decline, as in morals or art; decay. I think Oscar Wilde was right. Classicism has been dominant in our society for centuries – it represents the submission of the individual to the needs of the whole – or rather, not the needs, but the desires of the whole. ‘The Whole’ in this context generally means the majority. If the ‘whole’ is heterosexual and terrified of foreigners, then those that are foreign or other than heterosexual are dispensable in such a system. The one exception to this rule has been consumerism. Consumerism lined the pockets of the powerful and became the means whereby the whole was subordinate to the parts – the whole set-up of our society has been geared towards the endless desire to acquire more and more stuff. This has been at the expense of the happiness and freedom of the individual, we have become wage slaves, even our spirituality has become a process of ‘church shopping’ where we go looking for experiences and not looking for wisdom, where we seek that which agrees with ‘where we are at’, not somewhere that can take us ‘where we need to go’. Coming together to celebrate, drink, eat and be merry is not consumerism, being pressurized into buying junk in order to feel ‘valid’ is what I am ranting about when I talk about ‘consumerism’. If Oscar Wilde’s potted philosophy is true, then Southern Decadence is truly decadent. For a few days the whole (i.e. New Orleans) will become subservient to the parts (assorted revelers from a minority group). This does not however mean it is bad or that it fits with the glib second definition

ollowing the parade on Sunday, September 5 is the 17th Official Southern Decadence Bead Toss hosted by Southern Decadence Susan Lucci's Rip and Marsha NaquinDelain. It will be led by Southern Decadence Grand Marshals XXXVI Toby Lefort and Julien Artressia from the balcony of Ambush headquarters at 828 Bourbon Street. Beginning around 4ish pm, the annual event is sponsored by Ambush Mag

of decadence that I gave above – truthfulness and authenticity does not mean decline and decay. Indeed, endless dishonesty about us, our society and our nature leads to REAL decline. It is easy to caricature Southern Decadence as a mindless boozefest that demeans and degrades all who take part, but my experience last year was very different! It seemed like people were looking for community and fun, for relaxation and restoration – we even had a parade which I would have happily taken my mother to! We need to remember that the title of our celebration is tongue in cheek, and we are playing up to the prejudices of those who believe we really ARE all about decline and decay. Southern Decadence can be whatever we make it; we can cynically prey upon everyone’s basic appetites (which are in themselves not a problem, just easily exaggerated until they become ALL that we are about), or we can build solidarity, community and reach across the barriers that exist in our own LGBT society (race, age, gender etc) and use this occasion of fun and frolics as a tool toward a better way of being LGBT in New Orleans. Our church (and of course we are YOUR church as well) will be there with banners, flyers and hand fans to give a message of hope, love, compassion and acceptance – combating the usual nonsense that our fundamentalist brethren will be spewing. If you see us on Bourbon Street give us a shout out, as we are there to support, affirm and celebrate all you are, and more especially, all you may grow into. What you may grow into is not for us to say! You may become just a bigger, shinier, grander, more fruitful version of what you are today, but growth and development are everyone’s birthright. Acceptance does not mean stagnation; wanting to fulfill your potential is not decadence, it is dynamic growth and renewal – our community can lead the way to health for the whole community. I may well have not made myself very clear, but then again on this matter (like many others) I don’t have all the answers, just observations and thoughts. Today, just like every column I write, I am grateful that you give me the compliment of reading what I have to say, and I thank you all for sticking with me for nearly three years on what has been and will continue to be an amazing journey of discovery and growth. hat ginger-haired classic, Candy Samples, the Queen of Astoria, Queens (NYC) is coming back to Southern Decadence to perform Sunday Services at 700 Club on Sunday, September 5. Sponsored by the Decadent Ducks, the travel group that lands 400 revelers to the French Quarter each year, Ms. Samples sings her signature original tunes and puts on one hell of a show for Southern Decadence goers. Originally from Atlanta, GA, Candy began performing after catching the bug from seeing the legendary Diamond Lil open for a local theatre’s production of Torch Song Trilogy. “Miss Diamond would do a 30 minute set each evening at the theatre to get the crowd riled up and I was instantly a fan,” explains Samples. “She was performing to her album Queen of Diamonds and I was entranced by the fact a drag queen was actually performing original music. I had been writing music for years and seeing her on that stage made it click. There was a place for me and my music.” It took Candy a long time to come into her own, with the act that audiences see today. After moving to NYC ten years ago, the mistress of the microphone took a long running gig at Albatross Bar in Astoria, NY where she originated the bar’s Friday Night Karaoke party. Candy states, “back when I started at Albatross, the karaoke phenomenon hadn’t quite hit yet. I think we had 20 people at the bar the first week.”
But soon, through word of mouth, folks started lining up at Albatross to hear Candy and her renditions of “Kiss Me Deadly” and Elton John’s “My Strongest Suit”. Candy began incorporating her own music into the karaoke night and to a wonderful response. “I had co-authored a musical at the time and would workshop the tunes at karaoke night. We got to the point where the audience would sing along with me on my ballad, ‘When I Wore the Crown’ and waiving their lighters in the air. Oh, those were the days!” Samples then joined forces with drag pals Chic and Sassy to form the trio Gender Offenders, a sketch comedy troupe. Whether music, political satire or dance, the gang staged original material throughout the years to sell-out crowds at NYC’s Duplex Cabaret Theatre. “It was a great experience writing for the sketch shows,” says Samples. “If we were doing a show about marriage equality, then I’d pen a tune for that. Whatever the theme, I would always bring something to the table.” After performing for several years with the trio, Candy left the group in 2008 to embark on her life-long dream, to record her own album. Working with fellow artists Alan Parker and Jesse Sklar, Candy penned her first EP (Sample This!) which included the hilarious “Green Bean Casserole” and the politically-incorrect tune “Tap Tap”, inspired by the Larry Craig scandal. “I was at Southern Decadence when that news story broke and thought it was hilarious!” said Samples. “I knew right then and there I would come back to South-

In preparation for Southern Decadence 2008, Ms. Samples recorded “Tap Tap” and released a video just in time for the Decadence celebration. Unfortunately, the party was cut short due to Hurricane Gustav, but not before party goers got to see Candy’s trademark tongue and cheek style of humor on the video screens of the French Quarter bars. “People ate it up, and that inspired me to finish my debut EP, Sample This!” In 2009, that girl-on-the-go released Sample This! as a digital-only release through iTunes, Amazon and Rhapsody.com under her own label, Sweet Tune Records. She debuted the album at Southern Decadence, performing Sunday Services at 700 Club and to quite the response. “They loved it! I was floored at the wonderful New Orleans crowds’ re-

21st Annual NO/AIDS Walk Set for Sept. 12

O/AIDS Task Force, one of the oldest and largest AIDS service organizations (ASO) in the Gulf South will mark the 21st anniversary of the NO/AIDS Walk on Sunday September 12th. Thousands will gather beneath the oaks in Audubon Park beginning at 8am and then join hands and Walk at 10 in an impressive display of awareness and solidarity in the face of this terrible epidemic. Walkers and supporters are encouraged to meet in Audubon Park at 8am for registration. The WALK will kickoff at 10am and will proceed down historic Magazine Street to Napoleon Avenue and then will turn onto Prytania Street as the WALK heads back into Audubon Park. The Walk

Some 12,000 participants from more than 70 countries converged for Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 and competed in 34 disciplines from beach volleyball, and martial arts, to tennis, and bowling. Subject: Tropical Isle Case of Mistaken Identity regarding MTV Real World show July 21 (see email on right) The club that allegedly turned away the gay couple during the Superbowl was not Tropical Isle. It was a club called the Beach, 227 Bourbon St. We are often confused with this club since in the past, a portion of Tropical Isle Original, 600 Bourbon was called the Beach Club, We have since changed the name to the Bayou Club. The incident in question was on the SuperBowl edition of Real World. Again the incident was not at Tropical isle. We have a good working relationship with the Gay community and often co-operate on their promotions. And the invitation was open to everyone – regardless whether you are heterosexual or homosexual, male, female, transgender or transsexual, and regardless of religion, nationality, ethnic heritage, political convictions, athletic skills, physical capabilities, age or physical condition. Team New Orleans had a small but determined delegation led by Co-Captains Deborah De Bram and Warren “Candie” Woods. Other team members were bowler Stephen ‘Bubbles” Archacki, Sammy, tennis player David Sance, and representing track and field, Katherine Peale. Chuck Coleman won the Gold medal in his power lifting division, Bubbles and Candie took home Silver medals in the team bowling competition and Candie won another Silver medal in singles. Deborah took home a Certificate for winning the women’s A doubles consolation match. According to Warren “Candie” Woods, "Great fun, excellent beer and food was enjoyed by all. The people of Cologne welcomed us as warmly as our friends and families do in New Orleans. Team New Orleans looks forward to seeing their new pals and old acquaintances in 2014 in Cleveland, Ohio, if not sooner. The Games are held every four years and in Cleveland the motto will be My Games Rock!"

I
t is football season once again and everyone has Saints fever, including one brand new coffee shop in the Faubourg Marigny. The Who Dat Coffee Café has only been open a few months, but has already become a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Located at 2401 Burgundy Street, this quaint coffee bar and café has a wide selection of coffee, teas and delectable fresh food. The décor is inspired, with rich colors and a cozy layout. On a more personal note, Who Dat Café is literally around the corner from my house making it my coffee house of choice. Every time I enter the shop, my thoughts travel back to the little cafes I visited while in Europe. But do not get me wrong, this place may have characteristics of other cities but it is thoroughly New Orleans. With outdoor seating under large umbrellas to the well manicured courtyard in the back, every space is utilized for the maximum enjoyment of the customer. Another wonderful aspect of this café is its presentation of works by local artists available for purchase. In addition to the creative art, Who Dat offers Mighty Leaf Teas and New Orleans Coffee Roasters,
espresso drinks, Italian sodas, hot chocolate, soft drinks, juices, and bottled water. They also sell coffee by the pound, and have a wide variety of muffins, cupcakes, breakfast biscuits, bagels, croissants and cookies available, as well as lunch specials. Local artist and owner, Craig Nero, explains how the café got its moniker. “We decided to buy the coffee shop on Super Bowl Sunday when the Saints won, hence the name.” Who Dat also sells stamps, has free wi-fi services and mailboxes for rent to customers. They have a poetry night every other Saturday. Southern Decadence weekend is their grand opening so stop by for all the festivities beginning September 1. Their hours are 7am to 10pm daily. August Book of the Month Picks
I
have two books to recommend for August, one is not only a new author who I haven’t read before, but an entirely new fiction genre and the other is the latest work from one of my favorite
writers. Lets start with my latest discovery. I have never been a huge fan of romance novels, and a gay one seemed completely foreign to me. Gay romance, is that even possible, gay sex novels yes, but romance, I am skeptical. But I have to admit, after reading Tangled Web by Lee Rowan, I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t just a juicy read with hot sex scenes (which by the way there were some nice ones), but it had a nice plotline with likeable characters and compelling intrigue. In 2009, Running Press Book Publishers began a new line of gay historical romances, which tap into their growing market of Male/Male stories. This book has all the essentials of romance novels that fans love: forbidden love, exotic locations, and of course, sensual leading men. Eppie winning author Rowan captures all these elements to deliver one satisfying romance novel that entertains and makes you swoon at the same time. Set in 1816 Regency London, Tangled Web follows the story of Brendan Townsend whose loyalty to his boyhood lover, Tony, ensnares him in a depraved blackmail plot. With nowhere else to turn he seeks aid from the one man his brother told him to search out if he was ever in serious trouble, his old commanding officer, Philip Carlisle. Agreeing to come to Tony’s rescue, Carlisle finds himself facing a danger that goes beyond the boundaries of London Society’s approval. In a time when homosexuality meant death by hanging, both men try to combat a blackmailer who will stop at nothing, all while trying to fight their growing attraction to each other. If you like gay fiction, but romances
are not your thing, give this book a try. Tangled Web intermixes a tender yet illegal love into the historical period well, making it more than a romance. My next suggestion for your reading library is the latest Jane Lawless mystery by Ellen Hart, The Mirror and the Mask. The seventeenth Lawless whodunit novel finds our heroine at a crossroads in her life. The poor economy has put the Minneapolis restaurateur’s plans for a third restaurant on hold and her long distance romance is possibly completely finished. Unsure of what to do next, she takes up with her good friend to train as a private investigator. When a mysterious young woman named Annie Andrews wanders into Jane’s restaurant searching for work and something more, Jane ends up with her first case to find Annie‘s stepfather. As with all of Hart’s mysteries, there are lots of great suspects and numerous motives for murder. But finding the killer can prove once again to be fatal. Add to the murder mystery a secondary plotline involving her best friend Cordelia’s family issues and you have another gratifying read. What is so wonderful about Hart’s complex characters is they are very multidimensional. They are affected by the current issues facing everyone today such as the economy, broken relationships and aging. So enjoy The Mirror and the Mask and have fun solving the mystery. In Memoriam: Will Horswood
O
n Wednesday, August 18, 2010, a wonderful person and a truly dear soul, William Horswood, left this earth. To have known Will, was to love him; there is not much more I can add to that statement. If you were lucky enough to have considered Will among your friends, you know what I am talking about. He was sunshine and happiness, and I know that seems trite for me to say, but that is how he lived his life. I never saw him down, even near the end on Facebook, his entries were positively inspirational. It is my belief that people enter your life to serve a purpose, either teaching you a lesson, or unfortunately in many cases, act as a warning. I think that Will’s purpose was to bring positive energy to every person who crossed his path. He always had a kind word to say, and his smile just lit up a room. It was the kind of smile that was infectious. The last time I spent time with Will was the Marigny Bunny Hop on the Saturday before Easter. He was part of a wonderful group of people who marched in costume from bar to bar. I tagged along with his friends in my little make shift basket dress laughing and cutting up the entire way. At that time, I understood Will was sick, but he never let on that day that anything was terribly wrong. That was the type of person he was. He wasn’t a saint by any stretch of the imagination, but he was energized. He lived life unabashedly with laughter and an excitement in his eyes. And as I read all the comments on his Facebook page from the people whose lives he touched, I am reminded of what an amazing person he really was. He will always remain in my heart. And, every morning I can’t help but reflect upon the final words he posted on his page before he

he Mystic Krewe of Satyricon is hosting the regional premiere of In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play, written by Sarah Ruhl and directed by Aimee Hayes. This
comedy is definitely one not to be missed. Ruhl opened this play on November 19 at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre to rave reviews. In an interview, Ruhl says she began writing In the Next Room, after reading a book called The Technology of Orgasm, that described how 19th century doctors treated women diagnosed with “hysteria” by using a curious new electrical device. In one of the play’s scenes, the Dr. Givings character describes the cause of hysterical symptoms as “congestion in your womb,” explaining that “if we can release some of that congestion and invite the juices downwards, your health will be restored.” Earlier generations of doctors, according to the history books, had to make do with manual methods to achieve such a release. With the advent of electricity, medical science discovered new options. The Satyricon opening will take place on Friday, September 10 at 8pm at Southern Repertory Theatre. ecently, I had the privilege of emceeing the Mr. and Miss America Pageant for Amon-Ra, held at One Eyed Jack’s on Saturday, August 21. My co-host for the evening was Elizabeth Bouvier and the theme was Amon-Ra Goes Country. And, it was not only a lot of fun, but a huge success raising over $1,000 for the krewe. All of the “female” contestants were campy and over the top, while the men were scorching hot. But there could only be one Mr. America which was this absolutely Adonis of a boy called Eric, who is from Texas and going to school at UNO. And could possibly be my new boyfriend if he doesn’t get a restraining order against me (just kidding). But I digress, Benjamin placed first and made it very tough for the judges to choose. Taking home the crown and sash

under the gaydar ...from 34 for the ladies was Amon-Ra member Deja Déjà Vu. Her name says it all because just a few months prior, she was awarded Amon-Ra Prom Queen 2010. Dragzilla was the first runner-up. In between contestant numbers, the reigning 2009 Mr. and Miss America Cody Waremberg and Miss Gia performed. There was also two special performances by AmonRa Queen 45 Countess C. Alice and King 45 David Aranda. We even had special guests come through during the event, Love Gun, a Kiss tribute band, decked in full regalia who took the stage to announce their upcoming show at One Eyed Jacks on Saturday, September 4 at 10pm. And speaking of the Countess C. Alice, she should be congratulated on hosting another fabulous fundraiser for Odyssey House, which paid tribute to Elvis Presley. There were about a dozen Elvis impersonators on hand doing all the King’s greatest hits. These men were on fire, talk about your hunk-a, hunk-a burning love. stared out of the window at the raging storm and realized I had to act quickly. It was not just the reason that we were all trapped at JohnPaul’s with the murderer, but we had a limited supply of vodka. And the thought of facing a deadly yet slightly dumb assassin paled in comparison to the idea of what Elizabeth Bouvier would be like on the wagon. Another of those warning messages came on the television behind the bar drawing my attention away from the window. The male reporter was now replaced with a severe looking, older female who seemed like she just rolled out of bed. She had huge breasts that hung awfully low and appeared to have trouble standing upright. “I think they brought out their B Team to do the storm reports at this time of the night,” John, one of the owners of JohnPaul's, commented. “Do you not know who that is, that is Zsa Zsa d'LaHor, she is as old as the hills, and the female version of Nash Roberts. Whenever a huge storm comes into the Gulf, they dust her off and bring her out to tell us what to do. In the weather world, she is a god. Rumor has it that if you sleep with her, you will soon be able to predict these storms’ movements as good as she can,” Tittie explained the legend of Zsa Zsa, who seemed to have predicted all the bad ones such as Camille, Betsy and Katrina. “And truth be told,” she continued, “the people of New Orleans would never leave this city unless Zsa Zsa came on the air and told us to evacuate.” “Are you kidding me with this.“ Paul poured Elizabeth another stinger. “She is dead serious,” Lauren Brown added, “how do you think that Jim Cantore guy on the Weather Channel got his mojo. By wriggling his tight buns under Zsa Zsa. Rumor has it that Anderson Cooper turned her down for a night of passion and look at him now. I mean Katrina that is the name of a bitch that would cut you, but Bubbles, no, we’re good.” When she was done, she farted on air and walked off the set. Everyone stared at the TV monitor for a second in silence. “Gin,” C. Alice said, she had been playing cards with Tittie Toulouse, Lauren Brown, Little Debbie and Nurse Haley. “You cheat,” Nurse Haley said and stomped away from the table. “I do not cheat, I will have you know I am a Daughter of the Confederacy, and we never cheat unless it is against Yankees.“ Turning I sized up the bar, I had my doubts that Persana would be able to figure out the killer because at the moment she was chatting up Barbara Ella who was all giggles and smiles. Deputy Sable was in the corner cleaning her gun, the entire time keeping one eye on the laughing
couple. Paul and John were at the bar concocting shots for Elizabeth, Tami Tarmac and Princesse Stephaney. Elaine Stritch, I mean Cathy Fox, sat alone in the corner with her back against the wall and a dirty martini with three olives in front of her. From the looks of number of empty glasses surrounding her, she was on cocktail number six. When I glanced her way, she gave me the two finger point from her eyes to me, meaning she had her peepers on every move I made. “I have an idea, lets sing Christian songs,” Little Debbie said standing up from the table. “Or maybe something by Debbie Boone.” “Oh, for the love of god, would the real killer just shoot her and spare us any more misery,” Elizabeth said. “You think this is funny, Bouvier,” Cathy called out. “My life is in danger from a madman and you are making jokes. Well, we will see who has the last laugh, I am ready for him,” and with that she pulled out a gun.
Everyone hit the decks because after the amount of cocktails, she was slightly staggering and the gun was veering from side to side. “Listen to me, Persana Shoulders here, power lesbian and at the moment single,” she winked at Barbara Ella who blushed. “No one except Deputy Sable or myself is allowed to shoot anyone, is that clear. Now hand me that gun.” “No, if it is all the same to you, I think I would feel safer if I kept it” Cathy said defiantly and stuck it back in her purse. “Lets just all calm down for a second,“ I said, “and think this through. We all have heard that several people saw this strange doctor around Cathy’s room right before the murder, but he was no where to be found afterwards. So it makes since that he may be the killer. And since there are only women here, we should be safe.” “I wouldn’t be so sure, Paul didn’t I see you and John at the hospital the day of the murder.” Barbara Ella stood up.

who answered next. “But there weren’t any flowers in her room when I went in there,” I said. “Well gentlemen, do you have any answers for this. Anyone of you could have disguised yourself as a doctor and done the crime,” Persana eyed them distrustfully. “I have nothing else to say, that is why we were there, now who wants jello shots.”
“I do,” Elizabeth said. “There is always room for jello. Besides I haven’t had a chance to eat dinner yet tonight.“ She used her barstool as a makeshift ladder to climb up and reach some nuts in a bowl further down on the bar. It was that movement that gave me an idea. “That’s it,“ I called out. “Elizabeth you’re brilliant.“ “Thank you, I will be here all week and

Tami, you were in the fire stairwell at the time of the murder, right.” “Or so she says,” added Lauren. “Yes, I was, I was hiding from the women in the maternity ward, they started pelting me with bedpans when I started singing to them. That is the last time I do charity work.” “And Barbara Ella was in the lobby and said she saw no man come by her desk, and the tramp that she is, I believe she would notice a man pass her.” “Thank you,” she said demurely. “Well, if she did not see a man leave,” I stood up and crossed the room next to Tami. “Then did you see anyone come down the …..” The lights went out and there was a sudden scream and chaos. A gunshot went off and I heard someone fall to the floor with a thud. “Someone save the vodka,” I heard Elizabeth call out. Two more screams erupted, from who I was not sure. I hit the floor landing on top of someone. I heard a groan then someone grabbed me and spun me around on the floor knocking my head into the leg of a chair. The darkness started swirling around me. When the lights came back on, Lauren Brown was straddling me. “Oh, sorry, my bad, I thought I had the killer.” “Really then why is my belt undone,“ I said slowly, “could you get off me though so I can get up.” “If you must, okay.” I got to my feet and refastened my belt. Everyone seemed fine, the bullet never hit anyone, but left a nasty hole in the mirror behind the bar. “Who was shooting?” Little Debbie came out from behind the bar. Everyone else came out from their hiding place except Elizabeth who seemed to have never left her barstool, jello shot still in hand. “Sorry, my gun accidentally went off,” Sable said. “What you people need to do is pull it together,” she said and grabbed another shot. “Wait a minute, where’s Tami?” I looked around and everyone else was accounted for but her. “Look,” Barbara Ella shrieked and pointed to a spot on the floor. “Is that blood?” I checked out the dark stain. “We better find her and fast?” “Well, I am staying right here,” Cathy said and went back to her martini. “Me too,” C. Alice joined in. “Okay, Paul, you and John check the second floor and Persana, you and Deputy Shoot Em Up, take the alley out back.” I knew time was running out and we had to find Tami. “Bouvier, you’re with me.” “Sounds like a plan,” she jumped off her barstool and grabbed her stinger. “Where are we going?” “The basement,” I said gravely. “Aww hell,” she said and went back behind the bar and grabbed the entire bottle of vodka. “I think we are going to need this.” (If you think you know who the killer is, email me. Chuck Robinson
F
or a long time, I have wanted to do a column for Ambush spotlighting certain gay people in New Orleans who have not only contributed immensely to our community, but have a very interesting story to tell. So when I decided to do a feature about the Bourbon Street Extravaganza (BSE), it turned into something more. Chuck Robinson is the owner of Napoleon’s Itch and the creator of the BSE. But he has more than those achievements to add to his resume. In my opinion, he is the embodiment of a true entrepreneur. He jokes that things just fell into place, but you do not attain these successes without hard work and keen business acumen. So I met up with Chuck at Napoleons Itch for the interview. In his trademark cowboy hat, we secluded ourselves upstairs, and for the next hour, I discovered what an extraordinary man this city is lucky to have. Chuck was raised in a small town in Oklahoma, but he is a native Texan through and through. He has known that his passion was music since the sixth grade. He went to Oklahoma State where he majored in music. He is classically trained on the French horn, flute, piano and percussion. He trained with some of the greatest teachers in the country to hone his craft and has a doctorate in music. Just an aside and this is so gay, but fabulous, he was the featured male twirler at Oklahoma State. But with all his degrees and his training, he began his career humbly by becoming a music teacher in Oklahoma. He started teaching school in a farming community that had 14 kids in the band, and 88

in the high school. They were a bunch of misfits, but they had talent. He needed to reach his vocal students in the choir program, and he used a Gibson guitar to do it. He worked tirelessly with them on their vocals. He costumed and choreographed them and pretty soon they became an Oklahoma version of Up with People. They won competitions and when Robinson left the school, the group was 88 strong. He then was asked to do district wide clinics with other schools, and was the driving force that made Jazz Vocal a recognized competition at the Regional and State Contests of Oklahoma. After his first lover graduated school in Oklahoma, they moved to Dallas where he once again became a music teacher for the next 13 years. He rose in popularity with the students, and brought them to festivals around the world which included Mardi Gras. Because of his reputation and success with his students, he soon found himself in charge of more schools. After moving into a more administrative role, the job changed for him. So one Christmas Eve, he realized it was time for a change and he resigned. Getting together with a songwriter friend, Chuck produced his first record, Oklahoma Cowboy. Instantly he knew he wanted to be in the music industry. But first things first, he had to get an entertainment lawyer. Realizing as a newcomer from Texas, he needed to be taken seriously, he sought out the best in the United States. That person was Gerald Margolis, whose high profile clients included Robin Williams, R. Kelly and the Rolling Stones. He hopped on a flight to Los Angeles and using his usual tenacity, he scored a meeting. He met up with Margolis at the Beverly Hilton wearing his boots and now famous cowboy hat. His friend Elaine Palance, wife of actor Jack, showed up at the meeting and stole the show. He now sealed the deal and had not only an entertainment lawyer, but the best one in country music. Next, he needed a star and that star was to be Lynn Anderson. She was the number one female country singer in the world at the time, but she had not recorded in three years. She was gracious and turned him down saying she believed in what he was doing but thought a larger label would be the best for her career at this time, in fact she was meeting with them right after their get-together. But the winds of fate were blowing his way and the other label angered her, and before he knew it she was signed. He also signed Katy Moffat, Kathy Twitty, Ray Wiley Hubbard, Gary Morris and Dottie West. For being a new label, Chuck signed some heavy hitters and immediately drew the attention of MCA Records. He was called into a meeting during Country Music Week in Nashville and was asked to complete a video and perform at their International Convention of MCA Universal in three weeks. So gathering his artists and a few other ones he had on loan, Chuck brought
the house down with his new company Permian Records, which got its name on a flight when the pilot pointed out the sights below and brought their attention to the Permian rock formation, hence the name came into being. So now Permian Records became Permian-MCA. Never one to sit on his laurels, Chuck then created a music publishing company and an artist management company. In the 80’s, he was named Billboard Magazine’s most powerful independent record label in the world. But personally, Chuck lived a private double life keeping the fact that he was gay very confidential. That is the main reason he kept an office in Dallas, because it would be too hard to live that lifestyle in Nashville or LA. He was named one of the Playgirl’s Top 100 Millionaire Bachelors and one of D Magazine’s Top 10 Millionaire Bachelors. Those honors were both fun, but brought lots of stalkers with it. His accolades also include listings in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in Music, just to name a few. In 1991, Chuck’s first lover died of brain cancer and he reevaluated his life. He bought a five acre estate in Tulsa. In the midst of remodeling, he hired a landscaper named Julian. He had always been anti-drugs, and as he showed him around the estate, Julian pointed something out. To his shock in the woods on his
land, Chuck had one of the most substantial fields of marijuana, which had been cultivated by someone who was watching the house while he was away. Needless to say they called the police and had it destroyed. So not only did Julian sign on to become Chuck’s landscaper, but something more developed and they soon became partners. Julian helped clean out Chuck’s life and pretty soon they wanted to start a new life together in a business that was entirely their own. So Chuck took Julian on a whirlwind tour of his favorite cities and told him to pick one that he thought would work for them. And fortunately for us, he chose New Orleans. After arriving they both were avid collectors of antiques, so they went to an auction and before they knew it they bought an entire antique shop. They ran Robinson Antiques for 15 years and decided to sell it after Katrina. Then one day they had a chance encounter with Joe Jaeger, the owner of the Bourbon Orleans. They became fast friends with him and his wife. They consulted with him on the renovation of the hotel and became partners in Napoleon’s Itch, which since then has been entirely turned over to Chuck. The Bourbon Street Extravaganza is Chuck’s gift back to the gay community of New Orleans. Since its inception, this totally free event has boasted some of the top names in musical entertainment. Now in its seventh year, the BSE will be held on Saturday, September 4 at 5pm on the corner of St. Ann and Bourbon Streets. Performers include Deborah Cox, Kimberly Locke, Jeanie Tracy and Erika Jayne with special guests The Prancing Rockets and Damian Faul. This year’s show will have many Latin American influences to honor the Hispanic community for all their contributions they have made in rebuilding our city after Katrina. If I had to sum up Chuck in a few words, I would have to say he is a man of vision who never sees stop signs. If he can’t go through a wall, then he will find a way over it or around it. Because of his kindness and determination, our city and community has become a far richer place.

OW! Amazing how time flies when you’re having fun... and that’s exactly the way it’s been here in Mobile. Where should I begin? Well, Bleather sounds like a good place to start. What a weekend in Mobile with all the Bears and Leathermen!! Just a few weeks ago B-Bob’s hosted the Mr. Southern Renegades 2010 Contest on Friday night and the Mr. Gulf Coast Bear 2010 contest on Saturday night, both with an amazing turn out of guests and contestants. Emceed by the handsome guest host Dan Azevedo, the Mr. Southern Renegades 2010 contest went off without a hitch. The winner of this years contest is Sam Daniel who plans to compete in the Mr. Louisiana Leather contest in October. Kudos goes out to Darwin Singleton and many members of the Southern Renegades for putting this contest and a fun filled weekend of events together. Mr. Gulf Coast Bear 2010 was emceed by the hilarious guest host AJ McKay. Jerry Ehlen (B-Bob’s owner) and the Gulf Coast Bears throw one hell of a party. I have produced and attended contests all over the country and this has to be one of
the most entertaining contests I have ever attended. You never know what to expect and everyone is on the edge of their seats rolling in laughter throughout the entire event. This years contest was titled “Boot Camp Bears” and the new stage at BBob’s was transformed into “Fort Dix”. Let me tell you that STRANGE things happen at Fort Dix. Each contestant was taken through 3 categories, but the funniest being where they had to toss sausages through the big mouth of a drill sergeant, a cut out of Sgt. Carter from Gomer Pile. Nothing like slinging some meat around a bunch of men to get their attention... and only one can come out on top. Congratulations to Didier (aka D-Day of New Orleans) who took the title of Mr. Gulf Coast Bear 2010. Make sure you mark your calendars for the return of the outrageous Bonnie Bitch who will be at B-Bob’s on September 19th to once again rock your world by making select members of the audience do things they never dreamed they would do in public. She is the nations only Female Impersonator Hypnotist and after experiencing her show first hand I can guarantee you will hurt from laughter by

utumn in Lafayette always seems to sneak upon you. Even during the final days of July I find myself gazing out into the distance while observing yellow and brown leaves falling to the ground. Before you know it you will soon hear the crunch as you cross the yard, ankle deep in fallen leaves. Luckily for Acadiana, fall ushers in many events in the downtown Lafayette area. Beginning on Friday, September 10th, Downtown Alive will kick off its fall series. First up is Feufollet, a young group of musicians who are leading the way in creating a contemporary style of Cajun music. Feufollet has been admired for their musicianship and is comprised of critically acclaimed and Grammy nominated musicians, who continuously push the envelope with their inventive Cajun, roots and rock sounds. The first Downtown Alive will be held
in Parc International and will kick off at 5:30pm. For a complete list of the fall schedule you can visit www.downtownlafayette.org. For more information about Feufollet, you may visit www.feufollet.net. As any other second Saturday of the month, Art Walk is typically celebrated in the downtown Lafayette area. Such an event is a monthly opportunity for local art galleries to display the many works of local artists. The month of September will usher in an even larger event. This special 2nd Saturday ArtWalk Fall Fest honors Elemore Morgan Jr. Galleries, artisan exhibitors, restaurants, music, dance and more will line Jefferson Street from Main to Cypress Streets from 4pm-8pm for this celebration of art. The State of Louisiana has declared Elemore Morgan, Jr. Day and will be commemorating this special designation with grants awarded by the Elemore Morgan, Jr. Visual Arts Endowment and a special reception during the Fall Fest event. The galleries within the Downtown Lafayette Cultural District will also hold special exhibitions, and art activities for children will be available. Experience all of this on Saturday, September 11th. On August 25th, Acadiana Center for the Arts will have officially completed Phase II construction and renovations. For the past year many of us have watched in awe a process that has transformed the ACA into a spectacular venue for hosting theatrical events, weddings, receptions, par-

Vicki will definitely get the dance floor jumping and that’s not all! Returning is the fabulous talents of one of Mobile’s favorite Divas... International Recording Artist Abigail will rock the B-Bob’s stage with some of her hit songs like Let the Joy Rise, You Set Me Free and Could It Be Magic.
All of this and more, because the BBob’s showgirls, Venus Shante’ DaViss, Regine Phillips, and Miss Cie will then grace the stage with a new production and another fabulous show of the Best Female Impersonation on the Gulf Coast. This will be one hell of a night of fabulous entertainment, and who knows? There may even be more surprises in store. By the way, the Radisson Hotel has been sold and has new owners. It’s awesome to know that another homophobic businessman is gone from downtown Mobile. Maybe we can once again have LGBT events at this historic downtown hotel without the fear of being overcharged $2,500 by someone who does not stand by the agreements of his management staff. I’m sure Mobile Alabama Pride will be happy to hear this. Maybe they will bring John back as a special events manager so we have a trustworthy liaison with the LGBT Community. onic who? Tonic what? For the past several issues I’ve mentioned the new bar that former Sound Factory owner, John Gilland, has in store for Lafayette. The new location, which is at 2013 Pinhook, will offer many of the new and yet older traditions that you are accustomed to. Gilland, who has been working so tirelessly, promises to give bar patrons a new and innovative experience. Keep your eyes and ears alert because Tonic will be opening very soon. Speaking of new bars, downtown Lafayette’s newest bar is Trynd. This is not your typical bar. Trynd, located next door to Agave, expects nothing but the best from its patrons. If you’re greeted by a bouncer and you’re wearing either tennis shoes or shorts then don’t expect to get in. Dress shoes, a nice shirt, and either jeans or dress pants are a must. There is no cover and bartenders are not partial to making sure your drinks are strong. Jules Downtown also has much to offer. Random Thoughts
Y
ou ever find yourself in the moment where you just want to yell out, “What’s going on!”? Many of us are so quick to denounce dramatic circumstances yet we know deep down inside we all yearn for such action. “Drama is like Gatorade to the gays, it replenishes their electrolytes,” as Jenna on 30 Rock explains. Take a recent friend of mine. He, as many of us, recently went through the whole “I’m sick and tired of being gay and the drama” phase. As he sat there at 4pm on an idle Sunday afternoon and downed a bottle of wine, I couldn’t help but to stare straight into his blue eyes and chuckle. I simply replied, “You’re tired of the gay drama and hence you want to be straight?” I’ve seen this all too many times. I’ve lived that life once before. There have been times when I wound up starring at my friends with such a foreigner’s eyes that I couldn’t help but to stop and question why the hell I had to deal with so much. Yes we tend to be dramatic from time to time. Wait, which was an understatement. Most of us tend to be dramatic on a daily basis. Whether it is a simple pillow out of place on the couch, a small stain on a favorite shirt, or a major scratch on the car, we are bound to have our moment when we queen out. I

Remembering Pete
I
t has been a long time since I last saw Pete. He was one of those great guys that seemed to find his happy place, and it must have been in Phoenix. The news of his death was a shock, and I am devastated by the loss of this giant of a man. His smile and wonderful personality is something I will never forget. His partner and soul mate Adam sent an e-mail out to those in his address book, and this is how I learned of this sad moment. As Adam states, Pete was a wellrounded, astute thinker, well read, and made him feel like no other person had ever done before. They had dinner with a friend that evening, and as they retired for the night, Pete told Adam how much he loved him, then turned over and said he felt faint. He lost consciousness and had no pulse. The emergency people responded within a couple of minutes, and he was transported to St. Joseph Hospital, four blocks from their home, but they were unable to revive him. As a friend, I have to admit that I lost contact with Pete, but I have known him for many years. I’ll never forget the first time
acadiana happens ...from 48 say go for that moment, you deserve it. Queen out until your heart is content. We all deserve some sort of bitchiness. I hate to admit it yet it is sort of who we are. I recently read an article (I wish I could remember where but the red wine has attacked me by now) where it states that after extensive research, the main psychological difference between straight relationships and gay relationships is communication and healing. Allow me to define my definition of ‘relationship’. I define relationship as many things. I can be romantic, friendship, maternal or fraternal, the kind that siblings share, a trick, a friend with benefits, or that random acquaintance. Whatever it may be, it’s some sort of bond or relationship that you may hold with someone. Regardless of what sort of at one point it will grow rocky. It is natural. The problem is communication. From what I gathered from this article, straight relationships have the tendency to lack communication. It’s typically in the passive/aggressive mode or some sort of mind game of trying to express how one feels. As for us gays, we have no problem expressing how we feel. Many of us are very quick to “keep it real” and express how we feel. That’s healthy in many ways. Here is where the straight community has us beat. According to this article, once it is properly communicated, the majority of straight people know how to heal and move on from it. Surprised? Think about it. Allow me to leap out onto that limb and be so bold as to make a statement. Many of us are so quick to make nothing into something. Once somebody communicates something in which we do not like, we are so quick to blow it out of the water. Many of us allow
I met him at Hibiscus Bookstore when it was located down by the levee on Main Street. I was working in the store that Sunday afternoon, and Pete was one of the last customers to come by that day. I’m not sure how the subject came about, but it had to do with c-rings, and I was given one and told to wear it and think of him. I said thanks and in a few moments Pete was out the door and gone. Needless to say, I had never tried on a c-ring before, but as soon as he left, I corrected that oversight. I no sooner had walked back to the front of the store when Pete popped in and said he knew I had it on and to drop my pants. He wanted to check out the merchandise. I didn’t know whether to run or comply with the demand. Needless to say, the examination was outstanding, and we became instant and permanent friends. In fact, I can recall many conversations with Pete. He adored his three sons, and he often talked about how the divorce had caused a little rift in his relationships, especially with the middle son. I don’t recall ever meeting the oldest one, but I actually watched the youngest one grow to adulthood. And it came to pass that the middle son finally came to recognize how much he really loved his dad, and he eventually moved into the home that Pete and his lover at the time shared together. I believe it was somewhere down in the St. Gabriel area. I do know that in my photography assignments, I always took my film to this son for developing, and this was at Pete’s suggestion. I always thought about Pete when I rounded the curve past Memorial Stadium on I-110 and would look up at the state building where he worked and wish that I could stop in and see him. I only did that one time at his request and to exchange some printed material. Pete was a writer, and I have some of his short stories somewhere, and now I have to find them. I’m not sure if he ever got them published or not, but he was very good at this and I encouraged him to continue with this talent. Pete also told me on one of my last any small thing to work us. The key is to learn how to remain neutral, take constructive criticism, and not enable others to get to us. Take constructive criticism for what it is. Maybe you are that drama queen. Take it for what it is and move on. Always remember to check yourself, step outside of the box, and reevaluate yourself. Learn and move on from it.

conversations with him about the trip to the nudist facility over in Slidell. Knowing Pete so well, I could just visualize him walking around over there, but it was his story about this young man who not only was really gorgeous, but his endowment, as it was described, was of beauty beyond comparison. He said I had to go with him the next time because I would have appreciated this, especially if I could have met this young man. That never happened. I’m not sure why. I just wanted all of Pete’s friends who are reading this to know how much I respected him and loved him as a wonderful friend, one I could confide in and someone who looked on me in the same way. I don’t know of many people walking the face of the earth today that could match Pete’s goodness, his caring and giving love for his friends, or his big heart that showed you how much he cared for you. I feel a great loss today, but I gained something through Pete that few people can understand. It was a connection of the mind and spirit that will always be with me. I am so happy that he came into my life, and I will never forget that smile or that laugh that came from deep within and spread joy to all around him. The man is in Heaven I’m sure. I know he is at peace in God’s loving care. A memorial service is being planning in Baton Rouge by his sons, and I’m waiting for news of when this will take place.

obert still picks up mail that has not been forwarded to his new address, and I had a chance to talk with him this week. I walked
onto my front porch just in time to see him walking off. He is back in school again and really looking forward to it. I believe he said he was taking five classes. I am sure it has to do with art in some way. He is such a talented one with his hands. My goodness! That does sound erotic. I do wish him luck and hope he gets all high grades. He is a very deserving youngster. I had to get some printing done for one of my groups I’m in, and when I walked in, I noted my good buddy Claudette just working up a storm. At least it looked that way, but according to her co-workers it was only an illusion. Well, we chatted for a moment or so, but we save the big conversations for other places. I do know that she puts in lots of hours, and if this isn’t at her regular job, it is definitely at her home. Things are very well landscaped around the house, and I do believe that she must do several homes adjacent to the property. It is all properly cared for by a concerned citizen. Beautification is her middle name. I need to talk about another sexy Spanish Town stud. His name is Brent, and I don’t see him as much as I used to but he’s still around. He does a lot of work in the neighborhood, most recently around on Lucilla Lane. He is just one of the friendliest little guys around and always in a happy mood. He used to live upstairs in the apartment house there on Spanish Town Road and Bungalow Lane, but he’s moved on to other quarters now. I think he is from Colorado but not really sure of that. All I know is that he is just bubbling over with personality plus, and I often see him relaxing at Hound Dogs. I’ll have to check into this one more and pass this on to you.

hot tails of red stick ...from 49 I’m sure Joy could fill me in. I still think about BC Boy a lot. He used to live on North Street, and he and Roux would sometimes walk over for a chat. It is always nice to see him, but now that he is in Denham Springs, our meetings aren’t as frequent as before. Perhaps that calls for a dinner date soon. Hmmm. I don’t know how Tommy has managed to arrange this, but he will be in New Orleans for Southern Decadence. That's a great leap from Afghanistan, but I think he misses his other half and needs to get it on with a meeting in the Crescent City. His partner lives in Las Vegas, and I have pictures of them from last year’s celebrations, and I’m hoping to be able to share more with you for the next issue of Ambush. Be sure to check out the pictures in this issue of Ambush, especially the one of Jason. This is one of the best of the best when it comes to sincere and wonderful individuals. He is not only a dependable worker, but he has such a beautiful personality to go along with that magnificent body. If there ever was an All American boy, then you have it in this stud muffin. My tongue gets hard every time I see him. You are definitely an amazing young man, Jason, and I look forward to seeing you again and talking with you soon. I have to also get over to Cajun Cove and check out my long-lost friend Joey. The last time I saw him was at Good Friends, but now he does three nights a week at the Cove, and it will be nice to have
a big hug from this sexy guy. This is another one that I met years ago at George’s, and I’ve followed his movements from here in Red Stick to New Orleans, then across the lake, and now to the Cove. I really think he is a great asset to any place where he works, and I’m pleased to see him back in our little city. I just noticed where Bobby (Apollo king-elect) has made the trek over to Mobile to pick up his crown. I know it will be a beauty. This is where I had mine made from my own design. I have it in a glass case in my foyer and often think of the good times I had during my reign. That was a long time ago. I haven’t checked in with Ernie lately either, and that means a trip to New Orleans is in order. I was at Longvue Plantation last week, but I didn’t make it into the city. I’ve also promised Kevin that I would call him and also Mina. It is just impossible to get around to seeing everyone, but I try. I used to love to drop in at Good Friends, get a separator and either sit on the balcony or take in on to other places in the Quarter. That balcony has been memorable in a number of ways, especially at Mardi Gras. Memories don’t stop here. The Oz balcony was always a nice place to be at any time of the year as is Lafitte’s. I’ve even spent lots of nights listening to the lady play the piano at Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop. Those were good times. I wrote a play that is set on the balcony at Lafitte’s, and I often think of the day and events that this was based on. That too was many years ago, and I’m not even sure what I did with the manuscript. If you

real estate Condos versus Houses: Critical Legal Insight for Every LGBT Condo Buyer
M
any LGBT buyers mistakenly and understandably assume that the purchase of a condo is no different from buying a typical single family home. But the fact is that condominium ownership has its own exclusive set of rules that are quite different from those that apply to traditional houses. The laws of ownership are not exactly the same and neither is the totality of the physical assets and amenities that are fully transferred to the buyer. That’s why is it crucial that LGBT consumers familiarize themselves with the special characteristics of condominium ownership before they enter into a contract to buy a condo. Even those who have plenty of experience buying and selling “regular” dwellings will need to understand how condominiums are uniquely different – not just in the way they look but also in the way that condo contracts work. The most important thing to grasp is that the term “condominium” does not refer to a style of architecture. Although most condos do have a similar apartment type of look – with units arranged so that they open into an interior hallway and basic floor plans and designs that resemble one another – the term “condo” really refers to a legal definition. Many LGBT buyers don’t make that distinction, but it is an important one that impacts the overall ownership experience. The truth is that almost any kind of structure, from an office building to a cluster of townhouses, may be sold as condominiums as long as the legal framework for condos exists.
Just as hybrid vehicles run on a combination of gas and electric power, the legal format of the condo is a clever blend or hybrid of individual and communal ownership. The owner of a condo owns the unit
where they live, but they also share other amenities and features with everyone else who is also a member of the condo ownership group or homeowner’s association. An owner may own their balcony, for example, and the rooms inside their condo. But they don’t individually own the roof above their unit, the hallway outside, or the parking lot. Those features are owned in partnership with the rest of the condo residents. Each owner, in other words, claims a share of many common features that might include the outside landscape, the swimming pool, the central air conditioning system, the plumbing infrastructure, the condo management office, the sidewalks outside each condo, and the building’s elevator. While a person may be able to do whatever they want with their own unit, they have to get permission to make any changes to the shared property. If com-

I just know that it was a fun period of time in my life. Many friendships started here. I suppose, however, that it is like the old saying that you can never go home again. As time passes, so do our desires, our plans, our quests for different goals. I go to New Orleans, and I enjoy my friendships, but it is so different from past years. I’ve lost contact with a lot of my leather friends, but I haven’t forgotten them. This is why I need to just head down early in the day and stay until late at night. I’ve bar-hopped all night in New Orleans before. I think an encore performance is in order.

real estate ...from 59 mon property needs to be repaired or replaced they also have to shoulder their fair share of financial responsibility to make that happen. Many condo owner associations also prohibit the renting or leasing of individual condos, for example, so persons who buy a condo and then decide to lease it may be penalized. That kind of rule helps to ensure a more stable community of neighbors. But whether that is interpreted as a drawback or a positive benefit will depend upon the point of view of each individual resident, so before buying it is necessary to carefully study all of those rules and regulations. Once upon a time that list of rules would normally be only a few pages long, but these days it is more common to get an entire computer CD full of legal jargon explaining the rights and obligations of each owner. This includes the bylaws of the ownership association and it should also show a detailed accounting of money that is set aside or spent from the accumulated monthly condo maintenance fees. Check the bylaws and notes from meetings to find out, for instance, if any major repairs have been done or if there are any disputes with contractors. If the roof is in bad shape, the paint is peeling, and the landscape is a mess but there is not enough money in the condo association account to remedy those problems, that’s a red flag. But when the maintenance fund is flush with cash and the condo project is in immaculate condition, that’s a great sign of sustainable value. The best way to wisely invest in a condo is to do so with the expert guidance of a building inspector and a real estate attorney. Hire those who specialize in condos, though, because the scope of the inspections and the legality of ownership restrictions for condos are different when compared to all other types of real estate. They can explain everything and answer any questions that arise so that the buyer knows exactly what they are purchasing and can enjoy a stress-free closing and a happy condo ownership experience. It is also strongly recommended that LGBT

Laugh, Cry, Scream & Shout has the authenticity of a report from the trenches as Bethune and Stylist become a variety of women (and an occasional man) who struggle to overcome life’s challenges or reveal ways by which they’ve dealt with them. The authors have worked in education & social services and their finely attuned ears have captured a bona fide urban idiom. “Black don’t crack but it spread,” they inform us, adding “Yellow don’t spread.” The women here deal with abusive boyfriends & husbands, drug-addicted mothers, incarcerated fathers, and some, more existential dilemmas. Bethune & Stylist present these portraits with honesty, never asking us to pity them (tho the characters might pity themselves) and assigning blame for these situations around evenly. Interestingly, when one wife legitimately complains about her lug of a husband who doesn’t do his share of the housework, by comparison to the others,

Similar to the seminal For Colored Girls..., however, this is a world where men are mostly either cheaters or beaters; one has to wonder, “What about the good men in the black community?” I suppose “good” is not as dramatic as “bad” but still... Wisely, the playwrights leaven the evening’s serious tone with humor as in a portrayal of a woman who chose her dogs over her husband and kids, and scenes in which girlfriends dish the dirt with a verisimilitude that makes you feel as though you’re right on that porch or in that club with them. Among the funniest bits is when Stylist arrives at a club and pulls a bottle of wine from her handbag. As worthy as LCS&S is, it would benefit from bringing in a director (the authors staged it themselves) who could further shape it. In its current form it is too long and becomes a bit repetitious. Stylist B’s theatrical raps are fine enough, but they seem to be collaged on rather than organically arising from the characters. While there is lean dialog that really hits the mark, some of it tends towards

I didn’t mind these few preachy moments (and the mostly black female audience’s enthusiastic response to them), but the show could’ve used a little more dramatic suspense; when one character did spin out an engrossing story to another, you could’ve heard a pin drop. Whatever shortcomings the script may have had, there were none in the performances. Bethune effortlessly switched from a baneful woman strung out on heroin to an upscale lady using bizarre logic to defend her abusive son to a trying-to-keep-ittogether middle class wife hiding the marks of abuse. Though wig and costume changes aided her artistry, Bethune’s malleable voice and body language, as well as
her emotional range, was simply extraordinary. Stylist B. was equally chameleonesque and if her parts did not cover as wide an arc as Bethune’s, she brought a sly truthfulness to them all. Having been recognized last year with the “It’s Not the Size That Counts” Ambie Award for Cripple Creek’s The Skin of Our Teeth, it’s clear that no role is too small or too large for Ms. B. Bethune & Stylist plan to continue touring Laugh, Cry, Scream & Shout and understandably so; I hope those commitments won’t prevent them, however, from working on new shows. For theirs is a voice I hope to hear more from.

Into the Woods at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center
I
suppose a show dealing with fairy tales would be appropriate for the JPAS Summer Youth Musical Theatre. But when it’s Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods mightn’t that be a bit daunting? Well, no, not at all. The folks who brought us the award-winning Cats and Honk! presented a Woods that joyfully delivered this musical’s interlocking tales of love, loss and communal responsibility. Rather than being a mere traffic cop for the 50+ cast, Robert Mulholland’s direction was tight and conveyed all the plot’s dense points clearly, helped, in part, by the decision to divide the Narrator role among eight forthright actors. If some of the script’s moral complexities and Act Two’s darkness escaped these 8th-12th graders, give them another twenty years or so and I’m sure they’ll get that too. Musical Director/Conductor Ben Childress undoubtedly approached this as
though it was any professional production and elicited performances from his singers and musicians of the highest caliber. Dianne K. Baas-Laubach’s lighting captured the inherent moral chiaroscuro. Kelly James-Penot’s costumes were witty and spot on. Elizabeth Broomall’s set marvelously evoked the tangle of the woods complete with flowing brook. >From the Act One Opening, the cast gleefully undertook this Sondheim masterpiece as though they were born to do it; especially impressive was their flawless enunciation of his knotty lyrics. Jade Coates sang beautifully and was just as convincing as the haughty, vengeful Witch before her transformation as afterward. Julie Montalbano was the perfect Little Red Riding Hood full of knowing impudence. Tyler P. Robinson made the Wolf mischievously charming while his Rapunzel’s Prince was all frustrated longing. And how nice it was to see Jack, he of beanstalk fame, played by someone age appropriate; Andy Golden superbly brought out both the headstrong and tender qualities of this Giant slayer. As Cinderella, Laine Farber was properly mild-mannered and confused by her

trodding the boards ...from 70 situation; hers was another lovely voice. Alys Murray found the right comic yet stern mix to make Jack’s Mother adoring yet frustrated with her cow-loving son. Madeline Davis well-conveyed the romantic ambivalence of the Baker’s Wife, while Adler Hyatt made for a refreshing change as he demonstrated that the Baker doesn’t have to be nebbishy in either appearance or demeanor as long as his maturation springs convincingly from deep inside his soul. Meghan Kessel, Christian Tarzetti and Amelie Gelpi contributed nasty fun as Cinderella’s Stepmother and Stepsisters. Connor Appel’s voice seemed to be off in the first act but he was much stronger as Cinderella’s Prince in the second. And David Murray, a Best Actor in a Musical Ambie nominee last year for Honk!, is now in league with the teenagers and was fine in the small but important role of the Steward. So what’ll it be next year? Follies? The Magic Flute?
The Wiz at The Anthony Bean Community Theater

ou know a show’s a success when it’s hugely entertaining and its featured attraction—a beloved Grammy Award winner—hasn’t even appeared yet. Such was the case with the ABCT/NORD Summer Camp pro-
duction of The Wiz. The Wiz is probably never going to top anyone’s list of greatest musicals. But by casting his production with both kids and adults, Director Anthony Bean not only brought out the fairly simple humor in William F. Brown’s book that is well-suited for kids to put over but, more importantly, the visceral sense of authority that adults have over children, a quality so essential to this coming of age story that is usually missing when the cast consists only of adults. Bean’s direction was simple but effective; Act One, which often drags, flew by here. Bean seemingly didn’t talk down to his young cast but guided them to develop their characterizations with the same depth as he does when doing August Wilson’s plays. Musical Director Jeremy Pierre did an outstanding job and if the addition of offstage singers was a little distracting, it nicely sweetened the sound. Griffin Collins’ choreography was vibrant and imaginative but not so complex as to overwhelm the youngest members of the cast. And who were those youngest cast members? The cutest Munchkins you’ve ever seen complete with attitude to spare. It takes a real actress to stand up to those li’l Munchkins and this Wiz had one in its Dorothy, Prinsey Walker who achieved the perfect balance of spunk and deference to those characters she meets along the yellow brick road. Walker endowed You’re a Lion with staggering conviction and passion and, if the tears falling from her eyes in the last scene came, in part, from her feelings about doing the show itself (or so I was told), she remained
poised and enfolded those heart-stopping tears into Dorothy’s emotional journey. At a mere 13, Walker eclipsed the 18-year-old Stephanie Mills’ slicker performance. And let’s not even talk about Miss Ross’s! With his rubbery limbs, Jeremiah Croft brought to life a delightfully amusing Scarecrow. Justin Brown’s Tinman betrayed an
innate sweetness even before he got his heart. Ambie winner Josh Kagler made a welcome return to the local stage as the blustery Cowardly Lion, singing and acting up a tornado, well, a storm and, along with Croft and Brown, displaying sharp comic

trodding the boards ...from 76 timing. Among the older folks, Gavin Bell was a large presence, literally and figuratively, as The Wiz. Brittney James, a fine, funny actress with a strong voice, was amusing as the wicked Evillene but swallowed some of her lyrics in Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News. Irma Thomas had no such problem and when she finally did appear to sing If You Believe, it was goose bump time. Sure there were some shortcomings, mostly in the technical area, but this was the most joyous, the most heartfelt, and simply the most entertaining Wiz I have ever seen.
Dinner With Friends at Actor’s Theatre of New Orleans

ongratulations to Actor’s The atre of New Orleans on their 5th anniversary and their pitch perfect revival of Donald Margulies’ Dinner With Friends. René J.F. Piazza’s inspired direction was sensitive to all the nuances of this drama about two fortysomething couples, one of whom is in the ugly process of splitting up. What could’ve been an evening of talktalktalk passed by in the blink of an eye.
Chelle Ambrose, Benjamin Clement, Vanessa Cloke & Leon Contavesprie in Dinner With Friends Benjamin Clement was extremely good as the boorish Tom who has left Beth (Vanessa Cloke) for a young travel agent. Clement embodied all those guys who come down to New Orleans who hit the strip clubs on Bourbon Street in a specious quest to recapture their youth and sexual vigor. Cloke, a remarkable actress new to me, gave Beth, an aspiring artist, a genuine prickliness in an emotionally drawn out and open performance. Suffice to say, she reminded me of people I know. In the less showy parts of Karen and Gabe, Chelle Ambrose and Leon Contavesprie reprised their roles from ATNO’s debut production. Ambrose used the lightest of touches to express Karen’s controlling streak, and a dusting of bonhomie to cover her censorious nature that, unconsciously perhaps, chafes at her friends’ happiness. If Contavesprie’s Gabe was something of a goofball, this actor let the audience wonder if there were any infidelities in Gabe’s past, conveying the thought and maybe even the urge, yet seeming incapable or at least unlikely of carrying out the
action. Absolutely smashing. Together he and Ambrose were completely natural as two scared individuals standing on the edge of the unfathomable future. Despite ATNO’s exemplary production, however, I had reservations about the play itself. While Margulies raises some legitimate questions and issues about
middle-age life, he never goes further to provide any real illumination about them. For me, Dinner is the theatrical equivalent of a genre painting, a superficial snapshot of some not very interesting people’s lives. Admittedly, I’ve been underwhelmed by Margulies’ other plays that I’ve seen (Collected Stories, Sight Unseen). Or
maybe, as a single GWM, the concerns of these marrieds-with-kids just don’t touch me as they do other m-w-k’s. But still, why Dinner was awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize is beyond me. Regardless, I tremendously enjoyed ATNO’s brilliant staging of this not-so-brilliant play. Here’s to ATNO’s next five years!
