the "official" dish ...from 4 true horror really is. As a result of this discussion The House of Shock was born. Over the last eighteen years The House of Shock has evolved into a massive Halloween festival drawing horror enthusiasts from all over the world to its legendary grounds. "In our 3rd year, two monumental events took place. House of Shock moved out of the backyard and into a large warehouse and we recruited Steven Joseph who turned out to be an invaluable part of our twisted family. Steve is a jack-ofall-trades. Not only is he the head of our security team but drawing from his expertise as a tour manager and chief pyrotechnician for many successful bands including Pantera, Nickelback, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, KISS, and Ozzy to name a few, Steve holds the position of The House of Shock operations manager and pyrotechnics designer. Every year that we have been in operation, The House of Shock has grown in size, cast and popularity. Using the experience gained over the many years of existence, The House of Shock is reborn with far more elaborate scenes and a fresh look that surpasses anything we have had in the past!" Many of the things that people have come to expect are still a part of The House of Shock experience. There is still a multimedia stage show before entering the haunted house. The show is complete with live actors, pyrotechnics and stunts! This high tech show is always a highlight and memorable experience for the waiting crowds. We also have a second stage with strange and unusual acts from all over the world. Including acts like the Reverend B. Dangerous. You may have seen his act as the emcee at past Ozzfests! The Reverend performs his unique freak-show to the delight and disgust of the waiting House of Shock patrons. Also performing on the stage are many local and national bands and a New Orleans Piercing and Suspension troupe called Pain Tribe! The House of Shock has an exclusive merchandise store, a large concessions stand with many food choices available and a full bar to help relax even the most terrified adult thrill seeker! For all the success they have known as “the Rock-n-Roll Haunted House”, it is their hard work that keeps the people coming back. The House of Shock is continually ranked as one of the best and most intense Haunted Attractions in the Country! As soon as you walk onto the grounds, you immediately understand why it has maintained its status. This is an experience unlike all others. For more info or to buy tickets go to www.houseofshock.com.
139th Thoroughbred Racing Season Opens Thanksgiving Day
T
he best that Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots has to offer will be bigger and better during the 139th Thoroughbred Racing Season, which runs from Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 2010, to March 27, 2011. The meet’s centerpiece event, the March 26 Louisiana Derby for horses making their last stop before the world-famous Kentucky Derby, has had its purse boosted to $1 million, from last year’s $750,000. In addition, the popular Starlight Racing series that debuted in 2010 has been expanded so that every month will feature an upscale social event with live racing under the lights. The 84-day 2010-2011 Thoroughbred Racing Season will run Thursdays to Mondays through February and Fridays to Mondays in March, except on Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve) and Dec. 25 (Christmas Day). Live racing also will be conducted on Dec. 22 and March 8 (Mardi Gras Day). First post is set for 12:40 p.m. Central Standard Time (CST) daily, except on Opening Day (Nov. 25; first post is 11 a.m.), graded stakes days (Jan. 22, Feb. 19 and March 26; first post is 12:10 p.m.) and Starlight Racing nights (Dec. 17, Jan. 21, Feb. 18 and March 18; first post is 5 p.m.). General admission to the Grandstand is always free and Clubhouse admission is $6, except for Starlight Racing ($10). “The quality of racing at Fair Grounds compares favorably with any winter racetrack in the country,” said Fair Grounds Vice President and General Manager Eric Halstrom. “We feature impressive average field sizes, an abundance of turf racing, and a sizable population of accomplished horses that allows us to not only write a lot of allowance races but to actually fill them and run them. Between the great racing and a full calendar of special events led by the expanded Starlight Racing series, we think this will be one of the most exciting meets ever.” For more information on Fair Grounds racing, gaming or special events, visit FairGroundsRaceCourse.com. The racing calendar is highlighted by six key dates, all of which feature a minimum of five stakes races: Dec. 11, Louisiana Champions Day, with 11 stakes races worth $1.1 million for top Louisiana-breds; Dec. 18, Santa Super Saturday, with five open-company stakes races worth

The 2010-2011 Starlight Racing series covers five dates, one per month from November to March, including four during the Thoroughbred Racing Season. Facing real pain and keeping hope alive.
T
his has not been a good year for me, between illness and divorce I have been challenged like never before. Of course many many people in our community have been facing the same thing. It is really not good enough for people of faith to have no answer to human misery, to have nothing to say except a few platitudes in the face of sorrow, hardship and despair. The temptation is to lapse back into our primitive roots and believe that God must be ‘punishing’ us, and will ‘bless’ us
the "official" dish ...from 6 Bands and DJs for each Starlight Racing date will be announced in coming weeks. Fair Grounds will once again offer some of the best winter racing in North America, with daily average purses of $320,000 and a stakes schedule comprised of 63 stakes cumulatively worth nearly $6.7 million. Several high-profile horsemen are expected to have a base at Fair Grounds this year. Steve Asmussen, on track to be the nation’s leading trainer for a seventh time, will gun for what would be a record 10th Fair Grounds training title. All of last season’s top 20 trainers are expected to return, including Fair Grounds fixtures like Tom Amoss, a nine-time leading trainer here; Al Stall Jr., trainer of Horse of the Year contender Blame; and Bret Calhoun, a Top 10 trainer nationally and second in last year’s Fair Grounds standings. The deep jockey colony will be headed once again by big-money rider Robby Albarado, winner of multiple Grade I stakes this year, as well as last season’s leading rider, Shaun Bridgmohan. Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, the nation’s third-oldest racetrack, has been in operation since 1872. Located in New Orleans, Fair Grounds is owned by Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ Global Select Market: CHDN); it also operates a slot-machine gaming facility and 10 off-track betting parlors throughout southeast Louisiana. Fair Grounds will host Quarter Horse racing’s championship night, the Bank of America Challenge Championships, Nov. 19. The 139th Thoroughbred Racing Season will run Nov. 25, 2010March 27, 2011, highlighted by the 98th Grade II Louisiana Derby on March 26. Groundbreaking Report Addresses Transgender Student Athletes
S
an Francisco, CA - A groundbreaking report sponsored by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and It Takes A Team!, an Initiative of the Women’s Sports
if we are good; generally these concepts are simplistic and revolve around money and the lack or surplus thereof. Strange then that the Book of Job tackled all these issues two thousand four hundred years ago. Job, and of course the life of Jesus, broke the primitive link between behavior and the sorrows of this world. Job is not suffering because he was wicked, and Jesus suffered despite his nobility and divinity. There is no simple quid pro quo, no karma that governs our lives day by day, bad things do happen to good people. The fact that every sorrow I have undergone has, with the benefit of hindsight, proved to the good has persuaded Foundation, is urging high school and college athletic associations across the country to adopt standard policies to provide transgender student athletes fair and equal opportunity to participate on athletic teams. The report, “On the Team: Equal Opportunities for Transgender Student Athletes,” released on October 4, 2010, is the first ever to thoroughly address the complete integration of transgender student athletes within high school and collegiate athletic programs. The report is also the first to provide comprehensive model policies and a framework for athletic leaders to ensure equal access to school athletics for transgender students. “Educators and parents must be open to this challenge if we are to create educational institutions that value and meet the needs of all students,” says report coauthor Dr. Pat Griffin, former director of It Takes A Team! “Once we recognize that transgender young people are part of school communities across the United States, educational leaders have a responsibility to ensure that these students have equal access to opportunities in all academic and extracurricular activities in a safe and respectful school environment.” In October 2009, NCLR and It Takes A Team! invited experts on transgender issues from a range of disciplines-—law, medicine, advocacy, and athletics—-to take part in a national think tank on equal opportunity for transgender student athletes. Think tank participants, including leaders from the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the National High School Federation, met over several days, identifying best practices. Co-authors Griffin and NCLR Sports Project Director Helen J. Carroll developed these best practices into model policies and a framework for high school and college athletic leaders to ensure the full inclusion of transgender student athletes. “An increasing number of high schooland college-aged young people are identifying as transgender. This report is an invaluable tool to guide coaches and administrators in providing equal opportunities for transgender student athletes in a fair and just manner, based on reliable information and data,” says Carroll. “No student athlete should ever be turned away from a team because an athletic department hasn’t established policies that would allow them to participate.
me that hope must prevail over despair, that time always wins – with enough distance we can see clearly and give thanks as blessings what we experienced only as a curse. I may be a Pollyanna, a hopeless optimist, but if I am then it is despite my experiences, not because I have led a charmed life – I have the right to my optimism, as my life could have easily led me to pessimism. I have lived through clinical depression, attempted suicide, I have mourned seven suicides amongst my lovers and dearest friends, I have mourned the ranks of AIDS dead still dear to me, and have faced homelessness, alcoholism and its recovery, an AIDS diagnosis before there was any real treatment, Meningitis, the loss of a career to illness and finally, now, divorce and the bereavement that comes with such loss. None of us have the right to judge another’s life, and all I can do is urge each and every one of you to count your blessings, not in a cheesy, childish way, but in honesty, and including all those things that we should treasure but that are free – the sky, the sun, the air and the trees, the gift of sight, smell and the possibility of joy. Then count those blessings that lie hidden among the ranks of your afflictions; they are what forms us, anneals us, vulcanizes us and leaves us stronger, richer, grander than before. This morning as I write this I heard that Toni Pizanie died earlier today. From a selfish point of view, her illness brought me extraordinary blessings. Toni had been to church a few times, and we had got to know each other through PFLAG, but I had never had the chance to really spend time with her. As I began to visit her on a regular
basis over the last couple of months I came to discover an extraordinary lady, deep thinking and profoundly spiritual, complex and sometimes challenging. In her last weeks she didn’t only challenge me, she delighted me, taught me, blessed me, and as we sat together in her house the sense of peace and spiritual serenity surprised and astonished me. Toni’s final illness was not easy – she had a lot of pain, and was sometimes fearful of that pain, but she grew even as she wasted away – she became stronger as she grew weaker, and at the last her death was swift and painless. A good death. I will always treasure the last weeks of Toni’s life, they crowned her life, and blessed me more than I could have ever imagined. Much of my own pain has been like that – as the years have lengthened between its sharpness and my remembrance of it, the growth it brought has come to seem larger than the grief it brought. May we all find such blessings in the midst of our sorrows. Toni Pizane: Requiem æternam Dona ei Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace. Rest eternal grant unto her O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. May she rest in peace, and rise in glory. Amen.
According to the 56-page report, although “the needs of transgender students in high school and college have received some attention in recent years, this issue has not been adequately addressed in the context of athletics. Few high school or collegiate athletic programs, administrators, or coaches are prepared to fairly, systematically, and effectively address a transgender student’s interest in participating in athletics. The majority of school athletic programs have no policy governing the inclusion of transgender student athletes, and most coaches are unprepared to accommodate a transgender student who wants to play on a sports team. In fact, most school athletic programs are unprepared to address even basic accommodations, such as knowing what pronouns or names to use when referring to a transgender student, where a transgender student should change clothes for practice or competition, or what bathroom or shower that student should use.” The report determined: The adoption of transgender-inclusive policies and practices dispels stereotypes and fears about gender diversity. When transgender students are stigmatized and excluded, even non-transgender students may experience pressure to conform to gender-role stereotypes as a way to avoid being bullied or harassed themselves. “Failure to adopt transgender-inclusive participation policies is hurtful to and discriminates against transgender students because they may be denied the opportunity to participate in school sports.” “Failure to adopt inclusive participation policies also hurts non-transgender students by conveying a message that the values of non-discrimination and inclusion
are less important than values based on competition and winning. Schools must model and educate about non-discrimination values in all aspects of school programming, not only for students, but for parents and community members as well.” “Failure to adopt policies that ensure equal opportunities for transgender student athletes may also result in costly and divisive litigation. A growing number of states and localities are adopting specific legal protections for transgender students. In addition, state and federal courts are increasingly applying sex discrimination laws to prohibit discrimination against transgender people.” “Several studies show that schools are often hostile places for transgender students and other students who do not conform to stereotypical gender expectations. These students are frequently subjected to peer harassment and bullying. This mistreatment can lead to feelings of hopelessness, depression, and low selfesteem. When a school or athletic organization denies transgender students the ability to participate in sports because of their gender identity or expression, that condones, reinforces and affirms their social status as outsiders who deserve the hostility they experience from peers.” “We are confident that the report will be an essential guide for high school and college athletic leaders as they adopt policies to ensure that all student athletes, including transgender students, will have equal opportunities to enjoy sports,” says Kathryn E. Olson, Chief Executive Officer of the Women’s Sports Foundation.

oann (“Toni”) Pizanie left her worldly home to forever dwell with God, her guardian angels, her beloved Chuck and all her family gone before her. She passed away, Tuesday, October 5 due to complications from pancreatic cancer. As she wanted, she died in the comfort of her own home. Toni was 69 years
Toni came by volunteer work naturally, starting in her teens at Charity Hospital in the nursery and at Munholland United Methodist Church in the children’s department. She started working with people with HIV/ AIDS in the early 1980’s on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as President of the Gulf Coast Newcomer’s Club. In 1988, she moved back to her home in New Orleans and worked with the NO/AIDS Task Force and Fred Sahuc at the St. Vincent Roman Catholic Church. One of her first acts within the Gay Community was marching in the Rally for Equality in Ocean Springs, MS where she was filmed by Channel 4 and outed to her family and their friends. Toni’s mother became a supporter and volunteer for the Gay Community working at Project Lazarus and joining Church of Christ the Liberator, a GLBT Christian church in the Marigny, with her daughter. Trevor Project
I
am starting my column off this month with something that affects everyone whether you are in the gay or straight communities, and that is bullying. Within the span of one week, five gay teenagers committed suicide because they were taunted unmercifully. This is unacceptable. Every person out there needs to wake up and realize that our
youth are killing themselves at alarming numbers because of bullies and we can no longer turn a blind eye to this dilemma. LISTEN TO ME! There is help out there. You are not alone in your struggles. Hell, contact me if you do not think anyone is out there for you. I can promise you, there are people who can help. You DO NOT have to face this alone. The Trevor Project has been set up to help gay and questioning youths. They have a 24 hour, anonymous hotline with people ready to come to your aid. Do not feel afraid, at some given point in time, all gay people have been where you are. Here is some information on this organization. The Trevor
Project is a nonprofit endeavor established to promote acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, and to aid in suicide prevention among that group. Their vision is to be the national provider of life saving resources to LGBTQ youth and their families. They advocate acceptance and help prevent teen suicide by promoting mental health and positive self-esteem through a premiere on line destination, nationwide 24/ 7 call centers, and empowering social activities. The Trevor Project was founded by writer James Lecesne, director/producer Peggy Rajski and producer Randy Stone, creators of the 1994 Academy Award®winning short film, Trevor, a comedy/drama about a gay 13year-old boy who, when rejected by friends because of his sexuality, makes an attempt to take his life. When Trevor was scheduled to air on HBO® in 1998, the filmmakers realized that some of the program’s young viewers might be facing the same kind of crisis as Trevor, and began to search for an appropriate support line to broadcast during the airing. They discovered that no such helpline existed, and decided to dedicate themselves to forming what was, in their view, a much-needed resource: an organization to promote acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth, and to aid in crisis and suicide prevention among that group. Thus, The Trevor Project was born, and with seed funding provided by The Colin Higgins Foundation, The Trevor Lifeline was established and became the first and only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention lifeline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth. Today, in addition to operating the crisis and suicide prevention lifeline, The Trevor Project provides online support to young people through the organization’s Web site, as well as lifesaving guidance and vital resources for educators and parents. The Trevor Lifeline is 1.866.4.U.Trevor or 1.866.488.7386, or go online to www.thetrevorproject.org. Remember YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Call the Trevor Project.

bartender definitely sees his fare share of crazy antics, but I think no one sees more at his job than my pick for bartender of the month for October, Brian Barbieri. Brian works upstairs at the Phoenix, need I say more. What I like about Brian is that he brings a certain charm and wit to a unique bar space, giving people another reason to visit upstairs at the Phoenix. Are You Ready for Your Fifteen Minutes... Halloween 27
I
t’s Halloween in New Orleans, let the wicked fun begin. And, if you are looking for the most incredible time of your life, prepare yourself for Halloween 27, a benefit for Lazarus House. This year’s theme is Famous and it promises four days of non-stop naughty thrills. The weekend’s festivities kick off on Thursday, October 28 with “The Lazarus Ball” at the New Orleans Museum of Art in City Park. This event is always a beautiful soiree that includes food by some of the best restaurants in the city, amazing music, gorgeous men and one of the best silent auctions ever. The entertainment this night is provided by MoJeaux and
Taste of New Orleans. And organizers have a special treat by adding a fashion show sponsored by Saks Fifth Avenue and a champagne bar hosted by the Shops at Canal Place. This is definitely an upscale event in one of the most elegant settings in the city. Bring your checkbooks because this silent auction is truly outstanding. You can get some great art and fabulous gifts, and it is never too early to start your holiday shopping. On Friday, October 29, the House of Blues turns into the hottest dance club in the French Quarter from 9pm to 2am. With DJ’s Alyson Calagna and John Buckley spinning, you can “Feel the Fame” at this event. Then on Saturday night, October 30, from 10pm to 4am at Mardi Gras World Eastbank, the “Famous Main Event” happens. This truly is one of the most incredible costume parties in the city in a very unique space. I cannot wait to see all the fabulously crazy outfits that people have dreamed up for this theme. Be sure to be a part of the costume parade and you positively need to be in the audience for the midnight show, which is sure to blow your mind this year. DJ Joe Gauthreaux will be spinning the best dance tunes around to keep you moving all night long. And if you survive the night, on Halloween Sunday, October 31, enjoy a little “Celebrity Rehab” on the Steamboat Natchez from 2pm - 5pm. The boat starts boarding at 2pm and leaves promptly at 2:30pm, so you queens who like to be fashionably late, pull it together, because you do not want to miss this boat ride which includes a full brunch and music. This was one of the most enjoyable events last year, because you got to sit back and enjoy our incredible views of the river while you recuperate from the night before with a little Bloody Mary. If you have not signed up to be a host or a patron, then do so right away, it is one of the best deals of the weekend. For more information on becoming a host, or to buy weekend passes or tickets, go online to www.halloweenneworleans.com.
Movie Review: A Woman, A Gun and A Noodle Shop
W
ith so many foreign films being remade for American audiences, it was quite refreshing to see an American classic remade for the Chinese movie going population. Sony Pictures presents A Woman, A Gun and A Noodle Shop which is a remake of the 1985 directorial debut of Ethan and Joel Coen, Blood Simple. Now the action takes place in a Chinese desert town, and the plotline has an interesting new view. Helmed by director Zhang Yimou who brought us HERO and House of Flying Daggers, the storyline keeps all of its
dark humor and thrills. The basic premise is pretty faithful to the Coen brothers’ one with Yimou’s own flair. Wang, played by the wonderfully
sadistic Ni Dahong, is a miserable yet cunning noodle shop owner. Since his wife is unable to bear him children he plays out his twisted fantasies with her. Feeling neglected, Wang’s wife secretly goes out with Li, one of his employees. Yan Ni is perfect for the role as the brutalized wife portraying a woman at the end of her rope as she tries to manipulate a better life with the cowardly Li. She brings a strength, as well as a vulnerable quality to the character, and her comedic timing is impeccable. Li is played by Xioa Shenyang who brings a more slapstick flair to the movie as the timid man who is falls for Wang‘s beautiful wife. When Wang’s wife purchases a gun from a traveling Persian, Li reluctantly keeps the weapon bought for ‘killing her husband later’. However, not a single move they make escapes the boss’s notice, and after Wang catches the couple in a compromising position, he decides to bribe patrol officer Zhang to kill the illicit couple. Zhang is played menacingly by Sun Hunglei. Just like its predecessor, this movie waffles back and forth between dark comedy and thriller. The last twenty minutes, the action speeds up to keep viewers on the edge of their seat and create a gratifying conclusion. In my opinion, this movie has more comic overtones than Blood Simple, but it still works as a satisfying thriller. So being a size queen, I have decided to come up with my own special rating system by the size popcorn I order. With jumbo being the best, then large being above average, medium being the middle of the road, small being do not spend full price on this picture go for a matinee, and no popcorn meaning do not waste your money at the theatre, make it at home instead. So in my opinion, A Woman, A Gun and A Noodle Shop deserves a large popcorn. Enjoy yourself at the movie.
Stritch Revealed
E
lizabeth Bouvier and I drove to the home of one of the most infamous madams in the Crescent City. Elaine Stritch, I mean Cathy Fox, was being blackmailed by someone connected with the brothel and we were tasked with finding the culprit. “Elizabeth, what exactly are we going to say to this woman when we see her. Hi, our friend Cathy is being blackmailed by one of your gigolos, can you give us his name so we can ask him a few questions. Do you really think that is going to happen?“ “Just let me do all the talking,“ she said as she sipped on an oversized daiquiri. “Are you sure rolling up in this woman’s house cocktailed is the best approach,“ I said carefully watching her drive almost within the lines. “And why again did we have to stop at the drive thru daiquiri shop before we went to her house.“ “What you need to do is stop being so nervous. We are here, now pull it together, if a tramp smells weakness on a man then he is done.” “I will remember that,” I said getting out of the car in front of this sprawling three story stone mansion on St. Charles Avenue. We walked up to the gate and hit the buzzer. A very officious voice came over the intercom, “May I help you.” “Yes, my good man, Elizabeth Bouvier here. I have an appointment.” There was a buzzing noise and the
gate clicked open. We walked up the pathway across the well manicured lawn to the front door. I banged the door knocker and it swung open. A distinguished older gentleman with gray hair in a tuxedo answered. “The madam is expecting you, follow me.” We moved down this long hallway into an exquisite drawing room, filled with classic turn of the century antiques. We took a seat on the settee, as we were fixed a libation by the dapper man who answered the door. “Well, I never usually deal in couples,” came a voice from behind us. An eloquent woman breezed into the room wearing a black leather boustierre and spiked heels. Her dark hair was styled short and sassy and she wore a skin tight leather mini skirt and carried a riding crop. For what reason I had no clue and was not sure if I wanted to know. I stood up speechless, I was meeting one of the most notorious women of the evening in the city of New Orleans. “My name is Tony and this is Elizabeth Bouvier, we need to speak with you for a moment.” She eyed me like a piece of meat on a spit at a barbecue. She did a Cher like lick of her lips. “I am Rhonda Roget and this is my man servant David, but I pronounce it Daveed for effect. He hates it, but there is not much work out there for a retired man whore these days. And besides I like to keep him around for old times sake, he was always one of my favorite. Now Cathy Fox sent you, she is one of my best patrons. How may I be of assistance.” Elizabeth rattled her empty glass at Daveed, who brought her another drink quickly. “You see it seems that one of your boys may be blackmailing Cathy and we are here to find out who it is.” “Well, my boys sign a confidentiality agreement when they come to work for me. I put them through a strict interview process, if you get my drift,” she caressed her leather riding crop then smacked it against her desk. I nearly jumped out of my skin, but pulled it together. “So I can assure you it is not one of my employees.” “Maybe he knows someone who could be doing it. Can you tell us the man’s name.” “Man,” she cackled. “More like men, Cathy’s appetites are insatiable. I have four studs in my stable who regularly service her. I can give you their names, but they are not here now. You will have to find them on your own. You see her tastes run deeper than the man meat who stay at the house, she likes ordinary joes, not bad looking men, but the everyday guy, rough and tough, hairy and a little rag tag. Not my taste, but to each her own.” She scribbled down the names of four men on a piece of paper. “Now, why don’t I take you for a little tour of my home and gardens, I think you might find it to your liking.” She winked at me. “Sounds like a plan” Elizabeth said grabbing another cocktail for the road and pinching Daveed’s cheek. We followed Rhonda through her well appointed home, first the dining room, which had a long Elizabethan table for 12 set with the best china. Then she showed us her state of the art kitchen where we met her chef, who was dressed in an apron and nothing else. “This is Colston, isn’t he delicious, just thinking about him in my kitchen makes my mouth water,” she said patting his bare

real estate Tips for LGBT home sellers - Attracting a qualified buyer
E
veryone is well aware that for the past couple of years the real estate market has been rather lopsided in favor of buyers and quite challenging for sellers and their real estate agents. That situation is based on lots of economic factors but it all boils down to the fact that there is an excessive inventory of homes on the market, so buyers have plenty to choose from when they go shopping. More houses for sale means greater competition for a finite number of qualified buyers, so LGBT homeowners who are able to more effectively market their homes will have a distinct advantage. There are practical steps a seller can take to assist the Realtor, and these can
potentially make the difference between a prompt sale and a listing that languishes on the market without any real nibbles or purchase offers. Here are five things to consider, for example, to assist the listing agent: Maintain Curb Appeal Although it may take an extra hour a week, keeping a home looking attractive from the street is one of the easiest ways to add intangible equity. Think of the visual appeal of the home as charisma that can be felt from the street. Keep the lawn manicured, the flowerbeds tidy, and put a new coat of paint or varnish on the front door because it can work wonders in terms of pulling in buyers and making the listing agent’s phone ring with inquiries. Set the Stage When a buyer makes an appointment to view a home it is not just a dress rehearsal; it’s show time. Help market the
home by keeping it free of clutter, because extra space makes any home look larger and real estate buyers typically pay more

They snapped to attention when Rhonda approached. “I just love a man that commands my awareness, don’t you Lizzie honey.” “Hey, do you have an ATM here,” she said salivating at one blond boy who seemed to be at full attention as he got out of the water. And there was definitely no shrinkage there. “I have one in the parlor, but we also take, Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover, and we charge it discreetly to your bill, so your employer, wife, loved one, whoever, will never be the wiser.” “I think we are fine and have seen enough, thank you for all your help, but we will be leaving.” “Leaving,” Rhonda moved so close to me I could smell the light but alluring fragrance she was wearing, “why Tony I was hoping you would stay and maybe grill me some more with your deep probing questions, maybe a little rougher this time. You know some say I am a very bad girl.” “Wow, lets just say no to that right now, we are leaving,” I turned around and saw Elizabeth sitting on a lounge chair slathering sun tan lotion on some nubile young man’s body. “Elizabeth, come on it is time to go.” “I am not finished questioning this man here, Rhonda, you said you take American Express?” Rhonda replied yes. “So Tony take my keys and come back in about, lets say three hours, I should be done questioning these potential suspects.” She handed her credit card to Rhonda. “Thank you Lizzie honey, Daveed will run your card right away. Well, I am going to my stables to ride my stud.” “Oh, do you have horses?” I asked her. “No why. I am sure you can show

for a bigger property. Fifteen minutes before the Realtor arrives, turn on a few lights to illuminate rooms and architectural features and pick up any clutter. That way the house is ready to show as soon as the buyer steps through the door. The Realtor can always extinguish lights to save energy before he or she locks up and leaves. Do a Disappearing Act Vacate the premises before every showing appointment. This avoids any face-to-face awkwardness but more importantly it allows the buyer to imagine or pretend that the home is actually theirs, not someone else’s. Once a buyer takes possession of the home within his or her mind they subconsciously begin to make a real emotional connection with it. This psychological transformation will usually inspire them to make a written offer – but it may not happen if they feel that are impos-

If someone is allergic to cats or has a general fear of dogs, for example, they may not even step inside to tour the property and that could spoil the chance to make a sale. Pet odors are also one of the most often cited reasons that buyers give for not liking a home. Listen, Learn, and Communicate After each house tour find out the reaction of the buyer and learn from their feedback how to improve the presentation before the next showing. The listing agent should call the showing agent and find out specific reasons why the buyer liked the home or found it less appealing. Talk to the listing agent and continually collaborate to

update marketing plans. If it might help then organize an open house event or consider a strategic lowering of the price. Of course another way for a LGBT seller to enjoy a market advantage is to hire a LGBT Realtor. If a home is located in a popular gay or lesbian enclave, for example, that can be a great selling feature and those real estate brokers who constantly work with LGBT clients will have a longer list of potential LGBT buyers. They will also know gay-friendly mortgage lenders in the area who can help potential buyers get an affordable loan with a low interest rate and manageable monthly payments. LGBT sellers should keep in mind that mortgage financing doesn’t just benefit buyers. Loan financing is just as important to the seller because unless the mortgage application is approved and the loan goes through the transaction will fall apart before closing. That’s why having a team of LGBT-friendly real estate professionals who can help potential buyers is a really savvy and proactive way for a homeowner to facilitate a sale. Those expert Realtors and lenders who are themselves active members of the local LGBT community will also have social and professional relationships that extend deep into the community. So they can even help advertise the home through that extended network and pipeline. gay history month Hot on the trail of Cleopatra, the Last Queen of Egypt by Joseph Schmitt ollowing Alexander the Great’s conquest of Egypt, he resolved to found and leave behind him a city that would bear his name. While Alexander did not live to see the completion of his namesake city, his political legacy brought a new lineage of power to Egypt that shaped the world as we know it today. For nearly 300 years the Ptolemaic dynasty ruled Egypt from Alexandria, blending traditional Pharaonic and Greek culture. From massive seaside temples and island palaces in Alexandria, Cleopatra VII, one of history’s most enigmatic icons, ruled her kingdom until a fateful day in 30 B.C. when she and her lover, Marc Antony, were defeated by the Romans. Constructed in the shallow port waters of Portus Magnus, the ancient royal quarters and temples where Cleopatra governed and worshiped eventually disappeared. In the turbulent decades following her death, the city of Alexandria, once an ancient metropolis, crumbled under political upheaval, uncontrollable fires, earthquakes and likely a tsunami or two. As generations passed, these historic figures faded into the annals of history, and their once elaborate structures for worship, governance and warfare, became something of a myth. It wasn’t until 1992 that a French marine archaeologist was able to prove that the mystical sunken city of ancient Alexandria still existed, beneath the port waters under many feet of shifting sand, hidden for nearly 2,000 years.
F
Franck Goddio is probably the most successful marine archaeologist in the world. He has found and excavated historically important sunken ships the world over. And since the mid 1990s Goddio and his team, in co-operation with the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt, have located the remains of the fabled ancient harbor of Alexandria including its royal quarters, once home to Cleopatra. When I recently had the amazing opportunity to meet Franck Goddio personally onboard his research ship, The Princess Duda, I expected to encounter a seriousness of academic proportions. Humbled to be joining such a famed underwater discovery team, I anticipated remaining quiet, and staying out of the way. When I was shuttled out into the port of Alexandria on a smaller boat to board the Princess Duda, anchored only several hundred yards from shore, I instead found myself greeted by a wall of smiling faces and visible enthusiasm. In retrospect, the name of the vessel should have denoted a sense of whimsy that I would come to find.
As divers readied their gear on deck to get back into the water, Franck took me inside the main cabin and showed me some high-tech imaging equipment used to sense abnormalities beneath the sea floor. As he clicked through images and programs on his computer, showing me how they’ve mapped out most of the ancient port, he reminded me more of an excited eight-year-old science buff, than a middle-aged world-famous explorer. What seemed to excite Franck the most was the certainty his work has provided; that we were floating directly over Cleopatra’s sunken palace. Pointing to a digital rendering of the ancient port, he showed me the precise location of the palace and the rock island that connected it to the Temple of Isis. To the east of us, he pointed on his computer screen to where there once stood numerous small reef islands and manmade jetties and breakwaters that created smaller ports within the massive Portus Magnus. It was here in these waters where ancient war ships once docked, where Mark Antony built the Timonium temple, and where Cleopatra struggled to maintain power from enemies both outside Egypt, as well as within. Back on deck he proudly displayed some of the unearthed treasures his team had recently brought to the surface. There were small amulets, statues and stoneware, unseen by human eyes for nearly 2,000 years. Franck was generous with his time and information, detailing the timeconsuming process of excavating these buried antiquities and assimilating them back into life on dry land. As excited as he was about each discovery, including ancient sphinx and marble heads, he seemed equally enthralled with the scientific research and tedious restoration, undoubtedly the less glamorous aspects of his work. The Mediterranean waters, even in the port, are surprisingly choppy and murky, with little to no visibility. Coupled with the fact that most finds are buried beneath many feet of sand and sediment, it was impossible for anyone to know for certain the ancient city was actually there. Crossreferencing ancient texts with descriptions of ancient Alexandria, new technology pioneered by Franck Goddio enabled his team to corroborate what were once thought to possibly be mere ancient myths. The newly added credence of these old-world texts may be useful in future discoveries throughout Egypt, maybe even leading us to the final resting place of Cleopatra and her beloved Mark Antony. Many of the finds from Alexandria’s Portus Magnus have traveled to Philadelphia for an exhibition at the Franklin Institute (www.fi.edu). Remnants from Cleopatra’s rule have been woven into the story of this modern-day search for her complete history, in the exhibition, Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt. In addition to underwater footage and photos, visitors will come faceto-face with more than 250 never-beforeseen artifacts from the smallest gold pieces and coins to colossal statues more than 15-feet tall. They’ll also get to learn about the gratifying work that goes into discovering buried antiquities, from the perspective of Franck and his team. Also on display are artifacts referencing Cleopatra, excavated by famed archaeologist Zahi Hawass and his team at Taposiris Magna

Mike Moreau aka Opal Masters
E
ach month, Ambush is spotlighting an individual who personifies the wonderful city of New Orleans, and most importantly its’ gay lifestyle. This month, we have selected someone whose persona commands attention, whether as Mike or his alter ego Opal Masters. Louisiana native Mike Moreau has one of the most fascinating stories and it is only fitting that it is part of Gay History Month. Mike’s accomplishments serves as an inspiration for the gay community. Mike moved to New Orleans at the tender age of 19 in 1963. His passion in life was horses, and he even states that once it gets in your blood it is always with you. He began showing horses at 18 in the Parade Division and he has always owned horses until recently. A staple on the circuit, Mike showed in full western regalia. One of his friends on the horse show scene was none other than our own Marty Curtin of the Friendly Bar. He received many accolades and was one of the top show riders in his category. His favorite
horse which he had for 20 years was Bully Woolly, who showed under the moniker of Starlight Parader. And, whose final resting place is behind the barn at Mike and his partner Darwin’s sprawling Northshore estate. But horses were not the only thing Mike became known for. In 1965, Mike discovered his other calling, one which will prove to be one of the most satisfying choices of his life. That year, Mike met Carter Church, a local costume designer, who now resides in Bay St. Louis. Carter taught Mike the fine art of costume construction, and he proved to be a quick study and had a flair for it. Soon, he went to work for the costumer on weekends and evenings. In 1980, Mike made a brave leap and started doing costuming as a full time career. Carter aided Mike in the launch of his new business for the first two years, even going so far as helping him get clients. They are still very close today. Mike outfitted royalty for the Krewes of Slidellians, Persus, Dominique and Flora in Slidell and Diana in Metairie. In 1983, he founded the Krewe of Troy, in which he was president and costumer for the first six
years, then captain up until the time he closed it eighteen years later. Those were all straight krewes. He came upon the gay carnival scene in 1965, when Carter asked Mike to join a gay carnival krewe that he and a few others had founded. At the first meeting, Mike was voted in the Krewe of Amon-Ra, named after the Egyptian Sun God, making him a charter member, in fact, he is the only one that has remained with the krewe to date. His costumes in the krewe are legendary and earned him the honor of Queen Amon Ra twice #10 and #43, and King Amon Ra #22. He has also been captain four times. Like horses, Mike relates to Mardi Gras in the same way, once it gets into your system, you become hooked. In fact in those days, Mardi Gras and Halloween were the only two times a man could dress in drag. And thanks to Amon-Ra, on October 31, 1964, at a camp pageant, Opal Masters was born. With all the popularity of Opal Masters today, one might think she was a pageant regular. But the truth is that Opal never entered any legitimate pageants until the year 2000. The reason he waited so long was that when he was younger, he did not have the funds to enter. He won Miss Unique in Alexandria, Miss Cheridan Pride sponsored by Ambush, and Miss Queen Fashions. Opal appeared mostly at Amon-Ra functions and fundraisers sporadically until 1990 when Mike met Louis Marcella, aka Ramona Leger at an AIDS benefit along with Nicole Dubois and Patti La Plae Safe. Ramona and Mike became close friends until Ramona’s sudden death in 1995 from undiagnosed meningitis. Ramona’s passing caused the rebirth of Opal so to speak, who promised to carry on his legacy and his charity work in fighting this horrible disease. That is one of the major reasons, Mike loves the New Orleans Gay Easter Parade, because it benefits a worthy cause. He started participating in the parade’s third year at the request of Rip and Marsha Naquin-Delain, the owners of Ambush. Mike became more involved with the parade because he felt that it showed the gay community in a positive light as well as helping the organization, Food For Friends. years, Opal Masters was made Easter Grand Marshal VII, and a year after her reign became a member of the Gay Easter Parade Board of Directors. Mardi Gras and horses were not Mike’s only love. He met his partner Darwin Reed of 35 years when he was 31 years old. Darwin who is from New Mexico brought Mike back home to meet his family and they attended a state fair. It was there, he became fascinated with the Native American culture, especially the beauty of the jewelry. His taste in finer things has become a trademark signature for his alter ego, Opal Masters. Her wardrobe and jewels are unsurpassed and Mike credits Ramona again for this fact. When Ramona and I would go out, she was impeccably tailored in the finest clothes and jewelry at all times. “Ramona was always first class whenever she went out, so if I was going to hang out with her, I had to match her, so with her help, I started building my wardrobe and collecting jewelry,” Mike explained. One of his fabulous pieces is a black and white mink coat from designer Anna Nateece purchased in Las Vegas. The coat was made for Liberace who had died before he had a chance to wear it. Since then Mike has bought two more coats from this designer, a beaded mink evening coat one and a coyote coat. This year Opal reigned as King Cake Queen XVII of Gay Mardi Gras as the Parisian Queen over the 2010 Krewe of Queenateenas’ festivities: Passport to Versailles, NO GUILLOTINES PLEASE. Opal Masters can be seen the first Sunday of each month at JohnPaul’s, 940 Elysian Fields, in Opal’s Follies. Her next show is her birthday show on November 7 at 5pm. If there is one thing that Mike/Opal wants readers to know about him, is the fact he is a true Scorpio in nature. He will always want to be the best at everything he does in all aspects of his life from his Mardi Gras costume career and his stage performances to his personal friendships. This commitment to excellence is what has set Opal Masters (and Mike Moreau) apart from the crowd in his careers as a performer and a costumer. search. In Alexandria, the colonial-era Sofitel Cecil (www.sofitel.com), directly on the Corniche at the ancient Portus Magnus exudes old-world romance. Four Seasons Hotel in Alexandria (www.fourseasons.com/alexandria) is the epitome of luxury with world-class spa and fitness facilities and dining options. Even in luxury hotels, it is advised to drink only bottled water. This includes refraining from ice cubes and any raw fruit or vegetables that have been washed in water. While Egyptians are friendly and hospitable, homosexuality remains extremely taboo in Egypt. While you will commonly see public affection between men, like holding hands and walking arm-in-arm, this is purely a cultural norm and is not associated with being gay. Over the last twenty years the political and cultural pendulum has swung increasingly to the right, with increased Internet censorship, police crackdowns on dissent, protest and homosexual activity. Visit Egypt for its fascinating history that has shaped our entire globe, and not visiting for political or amorous reasons.

horter days and cooler nights may bring way to the inevitable, that fading hard-earned tan. That doesn’t mean that the fun must fade away into the sun. Fall ushers in a season filled with events and holidays. It’s hard to believe that we’re practically a month and a half from Thanksgiving. Where the hell did the time go? More than likely it went down with that tequila or Jaeger shot that you had this past summer. Who am I fooling by writing “that” instead of “those”? Girl, you know the story and you know there was way more than one shot! Put away those short shorts, hot swim suit, and bring out that sexy Halloween costume. Sweater weather is around the corner and cashmere and wool is calling your name. You’re listening up with Joey Collins, girl!

L
et’s start with old business. In recent time Tonic has made a name for itself. John Gilland and staff have promised you a new and unique experience and, as always, he has fulfilled his promise. From Kira’s Tuesday Night Talent Show to the new Sunday Funday, bar participants are definitely in for an experience. The infamous Miss Mess has set the tone for Sundays at Tonic and so far bar patrons seems to be pleased. Kira Foxx has created a fun-filled talent competition that tends to draw crowds each and every Tuesday night. As participants strut their best, spectators vote as to who will move onto the next level. Tonic manager, Mitch Tate, has been working hard to bring you more entertainment on almost a nightly basis. As Tate explains, “Expect many more surprises around the corner and accept no imitations.” On Sunday, October 17th, Tonic will pay tribute to all things Gaga. All performers will be performing with Lady Gaga in mind. Attendees are asked to dress in your best Lady Gaga costume. Prizes will be awarded to those who can express the best. So remember to do it big or go home, you know Gaga would accept nothing but the best and the wildest. Let’s just draw the line at a meat dress… On Saturday, October 30th, Tonic will be hosting its annual Halloween Costume Contest. Either you prefer to use this holiday to express your inner slut or tend to be more conservative and traditional, make sure you do your best. Cash prizes along with bar tabs will be given to those who can out-do others. Let the competition begin! Don’t forget Tonic’s weekly run down.
The week begins with Monday Night Football along with Happy Hour all night long. Tuesday night celebrates Kira’s Talent Night. Sunday brings a close to the week with Sunday Funday and the infamous traditional Drag Show. Doors open at 12noon and $2 mimosas are offered all night until doors close at 12am. Sunday Funday includes VJ Kyle D playing your favorite videos along with Ms. Mess hosting BINGO. Don’t forget to follow Tonic on Facebook throughout the week to make sure you’re in the know with their daily drink specials. Jules Downtown has decided to change things up a bit as well. Recently they introduced singing sensation, Connie G, as a part of their alternating lineup. Expect Valerie Sugarbaker’s Friday Night Drag Show to alternate with Connie G. Best part about it all is that it will tail the fall season of Downtown Alive. If you have yet to be blown away by the powerhouse that they refer to as Connie G, then you’re in for a real treat. Valerie Sugarbaker’s Friday Night Drag shows, as always, never fails to put on a show. Make sure you follow Jules on Facebook to keep up to date as to which one will be performing for the week. Thursday nights also tend to draw a crowd as Shawn Carter hosts Thursday Night Karaoke. What else does karaoke scream than your drunken friends, so to say, screaming their favorite tunes from the top of their lungs? It’s either a hit or miss, you be the judge. Still not satisfied? As always Saturday night is no exception. Jules does its best to rock the house and surprise patrons with the occasional free shots on the bar. On Saturday, October 30th, Jules will be holding its annual Halloween Party. This year’s theme is Monster Ball. Allow your imagination to wander as you whip out that sewing machine and being your new costume. Either that or you can go the lazy way and order your costume online, pick it up last minute from a party shop, or rent from a local costume rental. Nonetheless, you’re destined for a great night. It’s all up to you.

Parc International. Admission is $5. The event begins at 4:30pm and will last until 7:30pm. Saturday, October 16th becomes a very busy day for downtown Lafayette. The 3rd annual Boudin Cook-off will be held in Parc Sans Souci from 10am to 4pm. For more information you can visit www.boudincookoff.com. Movies in the Parc return with Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Admission is $2 and free for children under 2. The event begins at 6pm in Parc International. On Friday, October 15th, Downtown Alive will present in Parc International Blues sensation Henry Gray. Friday, October 22nd will feature in Parc Sans Souci Louisiana Red, a local covers/variety band. Note that October 22nd will also host a Homecoming Pep Rally for UL. Remember that many events, such as Downtown Alive, are free to the public. I encourage many of you to write, call, and email your local city council member. Regardless of the past victory over “to-go cups”, Chief of Police, Jim Craft, is at it again and determined to outlaw “to-go cups”. Make sure your voice is heard. I say “storm the Bastille” and make it known that you demand to keep your right to an open container in the downtown area. Remember, if you sit there and do nothing then you shall receive nothing.
In Remembrance of Toni Pizanie
I
t’s three o’clock in the morning and I stare at my computer screen and tremble. A chill runs up my spine as the old chair I sit in begins to creek. I reach for my glass of cabernet and take a small sip and begin. I chuckle because I could hear her voice echo in the back of my mind, “Joey don’t start drinking heavily, I know you better than you know yourself.” I knew this time would soon come but I didn’t know it would be this soon. The day always seems longer when a loved one lingers on your mind. It seems even longer when one begins the day with the news of a loved one passing. I puff on a cigarette to calm my nerves and just then the memories come pouring in as tears runs down my cheek. Toni Pizanie and I seemed to have our greatest conversations over a short cigarette break. We often found ourselves at meetings or mixers, sneaking away for a quick cigarette and the typical chat of what’s been going on in our lives. Due to PFLAG there were a few times when I had the joy of her visitation in Lafayette. Each time she came she would always request that we first meet up at one of my favorite restaurants in the area. We would bond and my heart was always so warm when she was around. I was always so giddy when I knew she was coming. To me she was my fairy godmother. She took that title with pride. She was always a short phone call away. We would spend so many hours on the phone that before we knew it an afternoon had passed. It was a cold winter night in New Orleans when I first met her. I was so anxious to create a PFLAG chapter in Lafayette and I was so naive as to the people I would soon meet and where it would take me. As I sat in a circle with other members of PFLAG New Orleans, a very humble woman began to speak. She was leading the meeting that night because PFLAG New Orleans President, Julie Th-
ompson, was not able to attend due to other business. Toni spoke with such elegance that you were immediately brought in. You could tell from her words and the way that she composed herself that all were equal with her, she had not a bone in her body that would dare judge others. Immediately I knew I would grow close to her and I could confide in her with whatever my heart held deep. Though I only had the short time of knowing her for two years, less than many others, those two years I shared with her will never be forgotten. For those who knew her, knew that she was always kind, spoke her mind, and even if she was not supporting your agenda, she showed loved and compassion. In this modern day we obviously became Facebook friends. She would watch over me, as a typical fairy godmother would do in any fairytale. She would comment on my Facebook posts and send me messages on almost a biweekly basis. At times the message was in the tone of a mother scolding her child, but I knew she meant it with love. She always made sure I was making right decisions in life. She would comfort me as though I was one of her own. In her eyes I could do no wrong, to her my mistakes were a way of learning life’s lessons. The last time I spoke with her was in July. Though we began to drift apart, I still continued to read her column in Ambush, Sappho Psalm. As time grew on I could feel her pain via her writings. I could tell, in her mind, she was growing weary and old. I lived in denial because, as any loved one would dream, our loved ones are immortal. As she grew sick phone calls became unanswered and her Facebook grew idle. I kept my composure with an understanding heart, knowing that I was always a part of her as she will always be a part of me. A little over a week ago I spoke with Julie Thompson via phone and one of my first questions was in regards to Toni’s health. Julie shared with me how Toni’s health was rapidly fading. Regardless of the conditions, Toni remained strong to the end. Toni knew and was well prepared to meet her creator. I have no doubt that Toni died of a peaceful death. She’s in God’ s hands now and I have no doubt that she immediately requested to become a guardian angel, watching us all from up above and keeping us all from danger. Louisiana has lost a real hero in the LGBT community. Without a doubt, many will follow in her footsteps. She made a point to touch the lives of others around her. She will always be a part of the LGBT community and never be forgotten. Her legend will live on.

In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play
F
ull frontal male nudity, lesbian love, interracial romance, electrical stimulation of the clitoris and the prostrate, repressive sexuality, and titillating views of women in Victorian underclothes are all among the subjects seen on the stage of Southern Rep at the recent splendid production of Sarah Ruhl’s play In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play. The plot is set during the Victorian era in an unknown city, a time when it was considered bad taste to see uncovered body parts male or female. Even an ankle or an exposed leg was considered scandalous, improper, and indecent. Ironically this was an era when graphic pornography, whore houses and prostitution of adults and children ran rampant but hidden. Women had little or no rights. Most female problems were diagnosed as hysteria. An occasional male might also be said to have this disorder. They were given a treatment discovered by a young doctor who has invented an electric vibrator. Application of this vibrator to certain body parts caused a sexual climax which was
never recognized for what it was and patients hearing about this “cure” began to flock to the doctor for treatment. This is where the “willing suspension of disbelief” seems necessary. It seems very odd that during an age of repressed sexuality when “hidden” sexuality could be found in abundance (at least by men) that any male would not know what a female sexual climax would be. If one can accept that and ignore the fact of men not knowing, then playwright Ruhl has written an intensely fascinating play. And so it was done at Southern Rep with sharp edged and beautiful pacing by Meister Director/Actress Aimee Hayes. Excellent and electrically stimulating performances were given by the entire cast. Shad Willingham plays Dr. Givings with acute control and makes this character very believable. He is so obsessed with his medical practice and new “electrical vibrator cure” that he is oblivious to what he is doing to his patients and to the fact that he is in the process, ignoring his adoring wife. Playing Catherine, the wife of Dr. Givings, Katherine McClain creates a remarkable performance full of tenderness and confusion, and a willful convincing desire for love/sex from her distracted hus-
band. Clint Johnson plays the artist, Leo Irving. Mr. Johnson did his role with precision and perfection. He was a delight and his impressive performance as a free spirited artist diagnosed with hysteria was right on the mark, in a role that would make most actors shy away. His sense of freedom and life without the strictures of Victorian attitudes was memorable. Kesha Bullard as Elizabeth, the African American woman hired to wet nurse the baby of Dr. and Mrs. Givings gave an elegant and secure performance. She established her role with grace and incisive understanding. Another memorable performance, it was appreciated for its artistry. Jason Kirkpatrick and Lucy Faust as Mr. and Mrs. Daltry were a good match. Mr. Kirkpatrick played the bluffery Victorian husband with elan and the marvelous Lucy Faust played his wife with a sincere and mature understanding of her role. They were both sublime, he in his manly brashness she in her innocence, until she begins getting the treatments of the electric vibrator, at which time she begins to think more deeply about her role as wife and woman. They both gave star performances. Morrey McElroy did the role of Annie, Dr. Givings nurse. She made a major role out of her lesser role playing a woman of repressed desire and longing. Her long and desperate but tender kiss of Mrs. Daltry said more in a few moments about her sad, longing character than the whole script. This scene was one of many tender and unforgettable moments of the play. The assured and elegantly evocative set of two rooms from a Victorian era by
David Raphel were beautiful, clever, and workable. Mr. Raphel is truly one of our great theater artists and has never done a set that was not a joy to behold. John Long (lighting) and Jeremy J. Lee (sound) were a perfect addition to very professional production. No one does it like out town’s Southern Rep Theater.
