New Orleans Ranks 2nd in List of 10 Best Places in United States To Get Into The Holiday Spirit

T

here are some cities that shine like no others during the holidays. Some glitter with thousands of blinking lights, while others celebrate the season in ways all their own. AOL Travel has rounded up ten of the top places to have a jolly good time in the entire United States. New Orleans landed the No. 2 spot following New Your City. According to AOL.COM, "New Orleans celebrates the holidays with a twist: Christmas New Orleans Style is a month-long festival celebrating Papa Noel. Every corner of the city comes alive with glowing lights, festively decked out streetcars, and candlelit caroling. Take a tour of decorated antebellum homes, listen to the sounds of riverboat caroling cruises, catch a special Christmas theater performance, shop along the French Quarter, or sit back and enjoy the view on a carriage ride. There is also a traditional lighting of a 12-foot menorah at Chanukah at Riverwalk, as well as several New Years celebrations throughout the city." The remaining 9 rankings include: 1. New York, New York The City That Never Sleeps simply cannot be topped during the holiday season. It seems as if every street and window in Manhattan is decorated in dazzling displays. The mere thought of Christmastime in New York brings up images such as the high kicks of the Rockettes at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, window shopping at Macy’s or Saks Fifth Avenue, and taking a spin around the Rockefeller Center ice rink. For some more off-the-beaten path things to do during the holidays, check out the Origami Holiday Tree at the American Museum of Natural History or give cross country skiing a shot in Central Park. Even with the cold wind blowing, there are endless ways to get into the holiday spirit in New York. 3. Orlando, Florida With dazzling daily parades and spectacular light shows, celebrating the season at Disney World is one surefire way to feel jolly around the holidays. Stumble into Disney’s Street of America and find yourself watching a spectacular light show, dramatically choreographed to holiday music. There is also Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, nightly fireworks, a snowfall on Main Street, and meet-ups with Santa — plus all the attractions that make Disney special all year round. For both the young and old, joining in the holiday spirit at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is an unforgettable experience. 4. Asheville, North Carolina Christmas at Biltmore, America’s largest home, is a classy affair. George Vanderbilt first introduced his new home to family and friends on Christmas Eve, 1895 — a celebration that is continued during “Candlelight Christmas Evenings” at Biltmore today. The estate is decorated with dozens of Christmas trees, miles of garland, countless strands of white lights, and thousands of ornaments. Lend an ear to a choir group singing in the glassed Winter Garden, or step back in time in a ballroom where dancers dressed in vintage attire glide through the room. By day or night, Christmas at Biltmore is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. 5. Las Vegas, Nevada Everything about Las Vegas is larger than life, and the holidays are no exception. Every casino along the strip tries to out-do its neighbors with over-thetop decorations. The Bellagio Fountains dance to Christmas music and Fremont Street is decked out in red and green neon. If lucky, you may even be able to take your winnings to the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace or the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian to help spread the holiday cheer. Take a break from the center of action and head to the Winter Lights Festival at Springs Preserve, where an eight-acre garden is lit with a half-million sparkling lights. If visiting Las Vegas around the holidays, be sure to make reservations, as rooms and restaurants fill up fast. 6. Wheeling, West Virginia One town that takes the holiday spirit seriously is Wheeling — especially if you are looking to be wow-ed by Christmas lights. Set in the hills above the Woodsdale area of Wheeling is the main attraction, Oglebay’s Winter Festival of Lights. This six-mile drive is decked out in one of the largest Christmas light displays in the country. There’s a twinkling snowflake tunnel, a six-story tall poinsettia wreath, and more. Even Snoopy and the gang make an appearance! Other holiday activities in Wheeling include the “Fantasy in Lights” Christmas parade, and a special, ongoing Christmas party at the Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum. If you need some extra cash for Christmas presents, cross your fingers

San Antonio, Texas The Lone Star State shines during the holiday season, especially along the San Antonio River Walk, where approximately 122,000 lights form a twinkling canopy over a riverside path. Over 150,000 people gather here annually for a one-hour parade along the walk, which is also televised. Throughout the season, more than 185 school, church and civic choral groups ring in the season with carols as they cruise beside the river walk. 8. Washington, DC The Pathway of Peace, the walkway leading up to the National Christmas Tree at the White House is illuminated every day from dusk until 11 p.m. A tradition since 1923, today one tall blue spruce and 56 smaller trees — representing the holiday spirit of the 50 states, five territories, and District of Columbia — are planted in the Ellipse, the grassy area just south of the White House. There is also a National Menorah on the White House grounds during the eight-day Chanukah celebration. Hot latkes are served, the U.S. Navy Band performs, and dreidels spin during the lighting ceremony. While in town, stop by ICE! at the Gaylord National, featuring ten colorful scenes sculpted from two-million pounds of ice. 9. Santa Cruz, California The west coast may not have snow, but that doesn’t mean California is devoid of holiday cheer. The palm trees along the main avenue and boardwalk in the funky seaside town of Santa Cruz are decked out in a glittering holiday display. On weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Santa arrives by train to the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Visitors can hop on an old locomotive run by Roaring Camp Railroads that rolls along the beach, through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, across a 1909 steel truss bridge, and through a tunnel while Santa and Mrs. Claus make their way from car to car. 10. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Known as “Christmas City, USA”, Bethlehem was founded on Christmas Eve in 1741. An electric Moravian star shines over the charming downtown area and Lehigh University campus, two areas radiating with holiday spirit

Remembered.COM Offers Free Online Memorials for AIDS Victims

R

emembered.COM - the online memorial website in honor of World AIDS Day is offering free online memorials on behalf of any victim of AIDS or complications from HIV. The social networking service is also free for all family and friends to use to share the life and legacy of those who have been lost. Remembered.COM allows anyone with a computer to easily create an online memorial and send to their friends, family, and co-workers via email or Facebook. Those notified can inform others, offer condolences, or make donations to the charity of the departed. Traditionally, newspaper obituaries, emails, and phone calls would be the primary means of communication. It offers loved ones around the world faster and more dynamic interaction. The website was among the first to incorporate social networking into coping with the loss of a loved one, helping those left behind to surround themselves virtually with others who can exchange fond memories. A dedicated URL is created that is easy to share with others. An online photo share allows registered users to contribute photos, comments, and condolences with each other from every corner of the world. ”Truly a person’s legacy is best defined by those they shared their life with,” said Andrew Jorgensen, President. “We feel this is a great way to bring awareness to people and show respect for those who we’ve lost in this long and tragic battle.” The offer is good for any memorial created through December 31st, 2010 and is validated by using a coupon code at checkout: PREVENTAIDS10. Civil Rights Leader Leah Chase to Receive ACLU of Louisiana Award

L

eah Chase, restauranteur and stalwart of the civil rights movement in Louisiana, will be presented the 35th Annual Ben Smith Award by the ACLU Foundation of Louisiana. This award honors people who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of civil liberties in Louisiana. It is named for the late Ben Smith, a founder of the ACLU of Louisiana and a civil rights lawyer who was arrested for his work to end segregation and for participating in mixed-race gatherings. Chase, best known for her family’s restaurant Dooky Chase, is often forgotten for her bravery during the 1960’s

when simply meeting with someone of another race was a crime in Louisiana. Leah and her husband, Edgar “Dooky” Chase, opened a back room in their restaurant for the use of civil rights workers – and risked both arrest and the loss of their business. During the heyday of segregation, her restaurant was the place of refuge for civil rights workers, and it was one of the only places where blacks and whites were allowed to socialize together. “Leah Chase is a true beacon of civil liberties in Louisiana and in the United States,” said Marjorie R. Esman, ACLU of Louisiana Executive Director. “We’re proud to honor the woman who helped bring Ben Smith’s dream of racial equality closer.” A dinner honoring Leah Chase will be held on February 12, 2011 at the New Orleans Marriott at the Convention Center in New Orleans. The keynote speaker will be National Urban League President and former New Orleans Mayor, Marc Morial. Information on the dinner in honor of Leah Chase is available at laaclu.org.

Palm Springs Leather Pride 2010 Welcomes Record Crowds

P

alm Springs Leather Order of the Desert announces that by all measures, Leather Pride 2010 was a huge success. ”The enthusiasm for this year’s event was simply overwhelming,” said Bill Spinney, PSLOD President. “We had record crowds at all of our events and fantastic feedback from the attendees. It’s gratifying to know that our efforts to build on last year’s successes were so very well received.” Despite the addition of 100 seats, Friday night’s Formal Leather Dinner once again sold out. The new location and menu were both praised as outstanding. The evening’s other main event, the Tool Shed/Gear Leather Backlot Party saw its largest crowd ever—and the largest crowd of the weekend—with over 1800 in attendance. Saturday night’s centerpiece Mr. Palm Springs Leather Contest and Recon Victory Dark Dance drew over 850 attendees, causing the Fire Marshall to consider closing off the venue at one particularly crowded moment. Mr. Tool Shed Leather, the heavily tattooed home assessment specialist and chain bondage enthusiast Drew Kramer, earned the Mr. Palm Springs Leather title for 2011, while Phoenix’s DJ Doom kept a large, sexy fetish crowd on the dance floor until well after 2am. Sunday’s Turning Up the Heat Pool Party/Barbecue and Elbow Grease Soaked Tee Shirt Contest drew another record crowd of over 325 people to the playful Helios Resort. The [continued on 13]

Pentagon Report Adds Critical Support For Ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

A

report released by the Pentagon found that a large majority of respondents to a survey of active-duty and reserve service members and their families say that ending the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy barring lesbian and gay service members from serving openly would not have an adverse effect on military operations. The House of Representatives has already passed a bill to repeal this unconstitutional policy, and President Obama and Defense Secretary Gates have both called for the policy to be repealed. A federal district court has already ruled that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is unconstitutional. The policy has been allowed to continue while that decision is appealed. The American Civil Liberties Union calls on the Senate to finally end this law by passing the National Defense Authorization Act. According to James Esseks, Director of the ACLU Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Project: ”It should be no surprise that allowing gay and lesbian people to serve openly in the military will have no detrimental effect on the armed forces. Bartender of the Month: December The holiday season is upon us and 'tis the season to get your drink on. My choice of bartender for the month of December is someone who has not only been a bartender for many years, but now owns one of the hottest new gay bars in the city. I am talking about none other than Matt Giglio from the 700 Club. His natural charm makes him a favorite with all his patrons. Along with his partner, Mike Cookmeyer, the

700 Club has made quite a name for itself in the gay community from its onset. I believe that service is everything and Matt instills that quality in all of his employees. But it is more than that, it is his straightforward approach to bartendering. He treats every customer who walks in the door with the same professionalism whether they are a regular patron or a tourist coming in for the first time. Customer service is key in maintaining business and Matt drives that point home. Unfortunately, I wish more gay businesses followed his strategic plan. Another great attribute Matt has is his easygoing nature combined with a sexiness that keeps the guys coming back for more. Think a very hot Sam Malone from Cheers. Matt looks very at home behind the bar and that quality shows, which makes him one of my favorites for bartender of the month. So go and check Matt out at the 700 Club located at 700 Burgundy Street.

This year all proceeds will be used to help several different organizations such as the NO/AIDS Task Force, the Gay Easter Parade/Food For Friends, Forum for Equality, Lazarus House, Belle Reve and the LGBT Community Center . With a theme like Mardi Gras Gaga, you know this event will be off the charts. I started going to this event two years ago and I am hooked, so much so that I am on the board for this organization. That is how much I believe in what this organization and the people involved are doing. Picture an incredible evening filled with beautiful people dressed in amazing costumes dancing, dining and drinking. There is an incredible auction along with one of the best raffles ever that includes several fabulous prizes such as two tickets to the Lady Gaga concert and numerous gift certificates. Thanksgiving with the King

T

hanksgiving has come and gone and over the past few years it has become such a special holiday for me, one that I look forward to all year. Ever since my father passed away in 2005 and the devastation that Hurricane Katrina had brought on my life, I have come to realize that family and friends are the most important thing. So in 2006, I started a tradition that has been going strong for the last four years. My mom and I take a bonding road trip to somewhere fabulous to get us into the holiday spirit. Each destination combines shopping (which we both love) with holiday festivities. In the past we have been to Natchitoches/Shreveport, Mobile/Foley and Pensacola/Destin. So this year we decided to do something totally outrageous and spend a long weekend in Memphis and it is one of the best times we have had so far. We started our lovely road trip at 6am on Thanksgiving morning. The drive was a mere six hours and it gave us time alone where we could talk. Our lives are so busy and rushed it seems like we never have time to just catch up on things and just relax. Six hours was enough to do just that. We talked about everything and anything, it was nice. We arrived at the downtown Marriott on Second Street and checked into our rooms. The hotel and staff were just wonderful and the service was top notch. That night, we took a cab to the world famous Peabody Hotel where we had some cocktails in the fabulously decorated lobby lounge. The two story Christmas tree cast a festive light on the atrium area. We watched as the ducks played in the Peabody’s lobby fountain which was cut from one enormous piece of travertine marble made and shipped from Italy for the hotel’s 1925 opening. The exquisite floral arrangement adorning the top of the fountain is changed out every other day in the middle of the night. At 5pm promptly, the duck handler dressed in his finest red jacket came down and laid out the red carpet. After a brief history on the duck march, he opened a marble gate and the ducks followed obediently down the red carpet and into the elevator to the thunderous applause of onlookers. We had a front row seat for this noteworthy processional. I had always wanted to know the history of the

march, so here it is. It seems that back in 1933, Frank Schutt, General Manager of The Peabody, and a friend, Chip Barwick, returned from a weekend hunting trip to Arkansas. The men had a little too much Jack Daniel’s Tennessee sippin’ whiskey, and thought it would be funny to place some of their live duck decoys (it was legal then for hunters to use live decoys) in the beautiful Peabody fountain. They instantly became a hit. Three small English call ducks were selected as “guinea pigs,” and the reaction was nothing short of enthusiastic. Soon, five North American Mallard ducks would replace the original ducks. In 1940, Bellman Edward Pembroke, a former circus animal trainer, offered to help with delivering the ducks to the fountain each day and taught them the now-famous Peabody Duck March. Mr. Pembroke became the Peabody Duckmaster, serving in that capacity for 50 years until his retirement in 1991. After the March, we went for a delectable Thanksgiving dinner at the hotel’s Capriccio Grill, an Italian steakhouse,

specializing in pasta dishes from La Bella Italia and US prime steaks and chops. Our server was Anthony who was truly informative and entertaining, not to mention very cute. The food was spectacular and my steak was tender and mouth watering. The following day, known throughout the retail world as Black Friday, we hit the stores early. For this, we went to Collierville, a city right outside of Memphis, to a wonderful outdoor mall called the Avenue Crossing, which was bustling. Usually I stay away from malls during the holidays, but this was differ[continued on 18]

ent, with it being outside, I did not feel confined or crowded, in fact it was downright fun and we got some incredible sales. Then we left there and went to their downtown area which is a picturesque town square filled with cute shops with antiques, gifts items and various other wares. We had a coffee while we strolled around this scenic area that looked like it was taken right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. They had everything you would think of seeing in small town USA, gazebo in the center of the square, a large holiday tree decorated to the hilt and even a log cabin that was restored from the Civil War. We had lunch at Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. It was truly scrumptious and the bacon/jalapeno hush puppies were to die for. The service was good and the meal was nice, but world famous, I do not know, I think that may be a matter of opinion, my mom’s chicken is pretty spectacular. After lunch, we went back to the hotel and recharged our batteries for dinner at one of Memphis’ top restaurants. We dined that evening at the Majestic Grill and it needs to be put on your list of places to eat when you visit the city. The Majestic Grill was originally built in 1913 as the Majestic No. 1, a silent picture house that entertained Memphians for three decades. The restaurant gives diners a glimpse of the heady Hollywood days of old with the largest private movie screen in the city showing silent films and classic movies, you feel like you are center stage in an atmosphere that reclaims the cinematic glory of the dawn of the silver screen. From the beautifully restored Beaux Arts décor to the award wining cuisine, I can see why The Majestic Grill was named 2008’s Best Restaurant & Best Overall Downtown Restaurant. After dinner, we toured the South Main Arts District and took a trolley ride down the famous thoroughfare. We started the next day by taking a morning drive to the neighboring town of Tunica, Mississippi for a little gambling. We drove down casino row and settled on the Harrah’s Casino where we gambled the morning away. After a little blackjack and fun time on the Lord of the Rings slot machine, we left the casino and went to the Tunica Outlet mall. We shopped briefly and then we were off to the whole reason we came to Memphis. We arrived at Graceland in an excited anticipation. I hadn’t been there in over twelve years and my mother had never visited so I was eager. We got the platinum VIP passes that allow you into everything and started with the mansion. OMG, I love Elvis, I can truly see why people called him the King. He oozed fabulousness out of every

pore in his body. We took the shuttle through the white gates up the drive to the main house. The entire walkway was aligned with blue holiday lights and a huge life size manger was erected in the front yard. The house was decorated for the holiday which made it even more special. We entered the home and I was immediately greeted by a hot looking docent who informed me I could not take flash pictures. I asked if he could help with the settings on my camera and he turned all my dials to the right positions, if you know what I mean. Nothing like a handsome redhead with strong hands to get the day started off right. Anyway, I digress, the house was more than just a snapshot of the seventies, it is a museum chronicling the life of one of the most famous entertainers of our time. You cannot help but love Elvis. From the moment you enter his drawing room with the stain glass peacock adornments and white Christmas tree, you know you are in for something special. Those who say that the décor is tacky, have no vision and imagination. He designed each room to be a gesture of his personality and then he took it to the nth degree. Tremendous! And as you travel from room to room, you feel his spirit in everything. The jungle and the billiard rooms were my favorite. After we toured the house, we went on the grounds to the racquetball court which has been transformed into a huge display chronicling Elvis’ career. Then you enter into the trophy room, which was just breathtaking to see all the awards and accolades bestowed on this entertainer. Next was Elvis’ grave site which is located in the Serenity Garden. It truly was peaceful and for a moment I felt sad to have been so young when Elvis died at the age of 42. I would have loved to have seen him perform in concert. Can you imagine seeing his show in Vegas, it would have been spectacular. But you can get a dose of Elvis when Cirque du Soleil introduces their new show entitled Viva Elvis at the Aria Resort and Casino. After the mansion, we toured the car museum. This is a car collectors dream complete with Elvis pink Cadillac, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Stutz Blackhawks, a 1975 Dino Ferrari, a 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible and the red MG from Blue Hawaii. Also some newer additions to the Elvis Presley Car Museum include his Rolls Royce sedans (one was in purple my favorite color), 6-door Mercedes Benz limousine and Elvis’ John Deere 4010 tractor that he used on his ranch and at Graceland. After the car museum, one of my favorite parts of the tour was next, Elvis custom jet collection. Elvis purchased a 1958 Convair 880 in April 1975 and named it Lisa Marie after his daughter. The plane has a living room, confer-

ence room, sitting room, and private bedroom, as well as gold-plated seat belts, suede chairs, leather covered tables and 24-karat gold-flecked sinks. Elvis’ smaller Lockheed Jet Star was customized by the star with a yellow and green interior. The man knew how to travel. There were several other exhibits like his Hollywood career, but one stand out newer exhibit was the Fashion King, which has many of Elvis’ costumes and jewelry on display. The man had a style all his own, and he liked to be flamboyant, like a very straight version of Liberace. My Graceland visit has to be the highlight of my trip to Memphis. You definitely need to make a pilgrimage to the home of the King before you depart this world. It should be on everyone’s bucket list, you will not be disappointed. Once you have seen Graceland, where do you go next, well we went to one of Memphis prize museums called The Pink Palace, don’t you just love the name. There we saw their adorable holiday exhibit that includes over two dozen trees decorated by area organizations and an animatronic holiday display. Then we toured their permanent natural history exhibit and planetarium. We finally after the busy day of sight-seeing returned back to the hotel. Our final night we had one of the best meals of the trip at the restaurant McEwen’s on Monroe, a delightful eatery downtown just steps form the trolley line. The service was impeccable and the rabbit appetizer was just splendid. Also, I highly recommend the Osso Bucco. The décor was quaint and that night the dining room was packed, but that did not hamper our superior service. This restaurant needs to be on your top ten list of places to dine at in Memphis. Memphis does have a gay scene but unfortunately on this trip I did not get a chance to visit any of the numerous clubs. Besides, that last night I went for drinks at the hotel lobby bar where as luck would have it I ran into a hot little rock performer in town doing a gig. So I had fun creating my own jungle room back at the hotel. The following day, we bid good-bye to Memphis and drove back to New Orleans stopping briefly in Jackson, Mississippi for shopping at Target, still had some shopping left in our system, then we stopped again for lunch at a Cracker Barrel in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Usually I do not eat at that restaurant, but since we were on a Southern tour, it just seemed fitting. Besides, I had some of the best service there than I have had in many restaurants recently in NOLA. And, I am a sucker for their gift shop, it is always full of cute useless crap that you never need, but want anyway. So to finish off how was my Thanks[continued on 23]

Bring your entire family out or take that special someone for a stroll through the magical lighted tunnel filled with decorated white Christmas trees and changing colored LED lights. There will be holiday drink specials, a live and silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, special performances and a few other surprises. The evening is hosted by none other, than my muse Miss Cathy Fox. This is a great opportunity to give back to those less fortunate to hopefully make this a special holiday for them. JohnPaul’s is located at 940 Elysian Fields.

A Stritch Connection

What in the gay hell,“ was all I could say as Elizabeth Bouvier and I stood in the bedroom of a very beautifully decorated condo we had just barged in on a few minutes

prior. We were looking for a male escort named Easy Bake Oven Lance who was with a client and may be the key to a blackmail plot against Elaine Stritch, I mean Cathy Fox. He was with a client and we rushed in the room to see who it was and before us in the bedroom dressed in a beaded evening gown stood Tami Tarmac. “Wow, this is not what I expected,“ said Elizabeth. “What are you two doing here?“ “We needed to talk to your man whore for a moment,“ Elizabeth answered. “Hey, I don’t appreciate that comment. I am not a man whore, I am a sexual artist,“ Lance said folded his arms against his broad chest. “Whatever Casanova,“ Elizabeth said. “Now Tami before we get to chipmunk cheeks over here, what are you doing and what did you mean when you said you are ready for your crowning.“ “She likes it when we role play,“ Lance spoke up. “I play a judge at a pageant and I put a crown and sash on her. She cries, her mascara runs, I even have an applause track that I play at the right moment.” “That’s pretty kinky,” I was not sure where this line of questioning was going to lead us. “Sounds pretty suspicious to me, Tami, tell me have you been blackmailing Cathy Fox, or better yet maybe you made your little Easy Bake here do it for you,“ Elizabeth walked into the kitchen from the bedroom and started fixing herself a drink. “Make yourself at home,“ Tami said sarcastically following her out. Lance and I joined them. “So what if I was, Cathy has enough crowns and sashes to last her a lifetime. I just want one crown, I want to win once, only once. Is that so horrible?” “No it is not, but why go after Cathy’s crowns.“ “Tony, I do not want a used crown, I want to win one of my own. I hate to disappoint you, but I am not the one after Cathy’s crappy little tiaras. I want a crown with substance. I want it to be so heavy that I get a headache after wearing it for more than five minutes. As you can see I am a girl of some substance, so I need a crown that makes me look petite and feminine.” “You better drop a chandelier on your head then,” Elizabeth downed her cocktail. “And, you are almost out of vodka.” “Look you skinny waste of a woman….” “Tami, Elizabeth, this is not helping. Lance tell us about you.” “I can honestly say, that after Cathy dumped me for that Vespa Vic, I was angry at her, but not enough to take her crown. I would run her down with my car, but the sashes and other stuff mean nothing to me,” Lance added.

“Well that is a relief, well I am glad we got all that stuff worked out, lets do a little tequila shot Tami and make up, it will also help to take the edge off,” Elizabeth said as she pulled out some shot glasses and poured the tequila. “I am out of salt,” Tami sat at a barstool by the kitchen counter. Lance and I stood on either side of her. “Got it covered,” Elizabeth said walking over to Lance ripping his shirt open and lifting him on the counter. “What the hell are you doing?” “Quiet man toy, we need salt and you look like you would be a little salty morsel.” She pushed him down on the counter and rubbed a cut lemon on his neck. “You ruined my shirt,” he said squirming. “Put it on Tami’s tab. Now what you need to do is stop moving or else I will be forced to use the tazer on you.” He remained still as Elizabeth and Tami did their body shots off of him. “Ohh, I got a hair in my teeth,” Tami said trying to spit it out. “I hate that, I wish more men would manscape. Down there too, if you got my drift.” She winked at us. “Tony, you want a shot. I am not sure if he plays on your team, but I am sure for the right price he would go an inning or two.” “I think I will pass, thanks though.” Lance got up from the counter and wiped off. “By the way, why exactly do they call you Easy Bake Oven Lance?” “Because I have an amazing appetite and probably one of the best “Oh my,“ Elizabeth cooed. “Trust honey, he can work his magic down there like no one’s business,“ Tami said shuddering slightly as she though about it. “I am like the muffin man, I start my tongue a wagging and I make women’s yeast rise.” And with that answer , I knew we were done with this line of questioning. We were running out of suspects, and there was only one person left. Elizabeth and I left Tami’s condo and returned to the car. “Who is the last guy left on the list,” she said. I stared at the name and just shook my head. “What is it? It can’t be that bad.” I took a deep breath,” his name is Russel the Love Muscle.” “Aww hell,” she said, then put the car in gear and drove away. (Stay tuned for our special holiday episode next issue.) Have an event or have something of interest to the LGBT community, feel free to send press releases or information to tonymgp@hotmail.com.

mourn, when ‘foreigners’ are killed they are ‘collateral damage’ and forever anonymous. This mindset does not only apply to foreigners. We all remember the enormous press feeding frenzy around the tragic disappearance of Natalee Holloway, a photogenic white girl, while there is little or no comment over the hundreds of young people lost to gun violence every WEEK in the US, or even those we lose every week in our own city. The same dynamic has been active since the start of the AIDS pandemic. Initially it was used as a stick to beat the LGBT community with, then when the ‘mainstream’ felt they were at little risk of getting it, it began to slide off the radar. Internationally, all the while Africans where disproportionately affected the same ‘mainstream’ took a limited interest, with the caveat that the

Religious Right was more interested in raising funds for Africans heterosexuals (presumed) than a bunch of fags and junkies at home. World AIDS Day attempts - through secular means - to get people seeing not through the selfish, warped lens of our present culture, but through the same lenses employed by the God who made all of us. That is to say, radical and fundamental equality. The concept of the nation state is redundant and bankrupt in this Christcentered world. There is (we are told) ‘No Jew no Greek, no male no female’ in the eyes of God. We are forced in this worldview to afford the same sorrow to the death of a Russian drug addict as we would to the death of a firefighter in 9/11. We are also forced to take our OWN deaths and health as seriously as we would the hero figures our society raises up. Empathy is the one human trait that has the capacity to change the world and bring forth that Utopia that the bible calls ‘The Kingdom’ – the God-view written on human hearts. When we no longer see a category when we gaze upon the world, not a ‘Somali’ sitting in misery, bloated with hunger, not a ‘Gay person’ struggling

to refinance often in order to capture incrementally lower rates. But the cumulative impact for many of them was that they racked up so many closing costs that the expenses undermined their strategy and left them worse off than they would have been if they had kept their old rate. For most LGBT homeowners it will usually be wise to wait until the savings that can be gained by refinancing reach a level of at least two percentage points. That way it is possible to minimize the costs of application fees, points, and other expenses that are part of any typical refinance package. Here’s an example: Spend $1,500 to refinance and lower a monthly mortgage payment by $50 and it will take 30 months to recoup the closing costs. That doesn’t make sense for the LGBT owner who might sell within the next three years. But spend the same amount to reduce a mortgage payment by $150 and the benefits will start to show up within less than a year. During the second year it will be possible to capture net savings of about $1,800 and within a seven year timeframe the refinance will generate net returns of $10,000 or more. To crunch the numbers realistically it helps to speak to a knowledgeable mortgage broker or loan officer who can more accurately estimate total closing costs in today’s market. They can also explain any available dis-

counted loan packages they happen to be offering. Be sure to factor in miscellaneous expenses or savings related to such things as mortgage interest tax deductions or monthly payments for private mortgage insurance, because those may also significantly affect the bottom line. Potential savings will always depend upon the type of loan, any available discounts being offered by lenders, and the timeframe for staying in the house before deciding to sell. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal is not just to capture a lower interest rate, per se, but to realize actual net savings. With that goal in mind it is easy to see that LGBT homeowners with higher loan balances will generally gain more leverage from a refinance as long as they can keep the closing costs under control, because even a relatively small percentage discount on a high-dollar loan can yield substantial savings. Condo owners fall into a slightly unique category, however, and need to calculate savings a little differently. Lenders often require at least 20 or 30 percent equity before they will approve refinancing of a condominium loan and they may also charge higher points and fees. That’s because banks typically assume slightly higher risk on condominium mortgages, so LGBT condo owners should consult an experienced LGBT-friendly mortgage expert to ensure they get the best possible refinancing terms.

Opening Eyes.

I

write this article on World AIDS Day, and as somebody (like many of us) that has been intimately affected by the virus, I asked myself exactly WHAT is World AIDS Day trying to achieve, and what does this mean to a person of faith? It seems to me that World AIDS Day is an attempt to draw the population of the World, and especially the rich West, out of a mindset that is deadly to the weak, the poor, and the marginalized. The mindset can be seen all around us, all year round, and it affects the US’s relations with the entire global South. This mindset fundamentally values people according to their economic and strategic worth. An American is worth as much as a thousand Iraqis, maybe even ten thousand Afghans. When Americans are killed they have faces and names and people

ortgage interest rates recently fell so low that they broke all-time historical records, and rates have managed to remain extremely cheap and attractive for the past couple of months. Even before they shattered those longstanding records mortgage rates were already a bargain, however, and in this kind of highly appealing and extremely rare mortgage environment many LGBT homeowners are trying to decide whether or not to go ahead and refinance. The question usually boils down to whether it is best to go ahead and refinance now (while it is definitely possible to lock in a great rate) or whether it would be even more profitable and savvy to wait with the expectation that rates will fall even lower. Those LGBT borrowers who wait might qualify for the bragging rights to an even better deal. But they could also get whiplashed if rates suddenly start their long anticipated climb. Ultimately the choice relates to a question of investment risk versus reward, and in today’s market it is prudent to consider as many angles and outcomes as possible before making a final decision. A few years ago when rates were more volatile – and the Fed was slashing them dramatically almost every month – homeowners had a tendency

with HIV/AIDS, and not a ‘Muslim’ being killed by American strafing then we see people, just like us, and we can then ask the simple question, ‘how would I feel?’ Then a world of weirdness opens up to us, not only do we question the wisdom of getting an item ridiculously cheap because it was made using sweatshop labor, but we question why we support regimes around the world that treat their people like commodities or enemies; why we treat whole classes of citizens here at home like enemies within, and why we took so long to respond to HIV/AIDS as a nation, and why for so long it was left up to individuals and organizations to care for what Jesus called ‘the least of these my children’, whom Jesus equated with himself. That line from the Gospel strikes terror into me, and it should terrify the bloated and greedy inhabitants of the top tier of our society; ‘even as you do unto these the least of my children, you do unto me’. God forgive us for how we treat these, the least of his children, for in God’s eyes they are the most precious. Rev. Clinton Crawshaw is the Pastor of The Big Easy Metropolitan Community Church in New Orleans. The Church meets every Sunday at 1pm (mass) and 5pm (Praise and Worship service) at 1333 S. If the current loan contains a prepayment penalty clause that will also trigger additional fees which may be substantial. Those need to be factored into any refinancing calculations because they will lengthen the time it takes to break even and start realizing net savings. Although the 30-year mortgage is by far the most popular, LGBT homeowners should also take a good look at 15-year fixed rate mortgages because with rates so low the monthly payments on those are now quite reasonable. Those who intend to live in their home for life can refinance into a 15-year mortgage and the amortization schedule makes it possible to own the property free and clear within just 15 years while building fast equity. That’s a fantastic accomplishment and can be incorporated into a savvy retirement plan for those who are now within 15-20 years of retirement age. ing-dong ding-dong Christmas bells are ringing! Agh! I’m already tired of hearing the Christmas tunes. I prefer “Now we don our GAY apparel.” Gay apparel, hhhmmmm? What exactly is that, Banana Republic? Nonetheless the days of the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping are here. At the end of the day it will be time to settle down with a cocktail, or whatever your poison may be, and snuggle with that significant other, again whatever that poison may be as well. Pour out the Christmas spirits and get ready for events to roll out. You’re listening up with Joey Collins!

B

y the time you read this, World AIDS Day (December 1st) will have already come and gone. Such a day of observance and remembrance of those affected across the entire world should be embraced by our community. This should be a time to stop and take note, and possibly give something back to the community. In lieu of this day, Jules hosted their annual Red Party. Proceeds from this particular night are donated to Acadiana CARES. Many thanks and appreciation goes out to Darren Parker, Wendy Wallace, their entire Jules staff, and all of those participants who gave their support on that night. Jules would also like to announce that on December 25th, Christmas Day, they will be open and hosting their annual Christmas Party. So after you’ve taken all that you can from your family gather your closest friends and head to where the real Christmas excitement will be. Many more details are soon to come so stayed tuned for the next issue. As always, Thursday Night features Karaoke, Friday night alternates between performances by either Connie G or Valerie Sugarbaker’s Drag Show, and Saturday night is Dance, Dance, Dance with drink specials. As always, the best way to stay informed is by following Jules on Facebook. If you still lack the Connie G experience then you are most definitely selling yourself short. If I could reach through this column and grab your arm and bring you to a Friday night with Connie G then I most definitely would. It would be sort of like that “Take On Me-A Ha” music video moment. Don’t worry; I’d probably buy you a COCKtail as well. This power house known as Connie G transforms the art of entertainment as she wows you with her voice. This world-renowned entertainer has traveled across the globe and somehow, don’t ask me how, Jules was able to snatch her for alternating Friday performances. Jules booking like a Las Vegas casino? What is really going on? Tonic has recently been packing the house on Tuesday nights. Kira’s Tuesday Night Talent Show heats up the night with host Kira Franssen and emcee Brodie “Mess” Meche. This American Idol-styled format of drag produces some of the most creative costumes and most amazing performances. The show starts at 10pm and usually lasts until 1am. Maybe if you can attempt to tame the currently untamed Miss Mess he just may throw a few shots towards your way. Don’t forget that Tonic has much more to offer besides their Tuesday night lineup. Monday hosts the weekly pool tournaments, Wednesday night DJ Chad Evans hosts Karaoke, Thursday night kicks off the weekend with Thirsty Thursdays featuring all you can drink for $15. Friday and Saturday rings in drink specials that vary from day to day. Sunday is Sunday Funday with Bingo at 7pm followed by Tonic’s infamous Drag Show at 10pm. Don’t forget to check out Tonic on Facebook and keep in touch with their daily specials.

also no surprise that she would win Bitch of the Year and held that title for six years. She has also gone to emcee many events throughout the country, including the annual Mardi Gras Bourbon Street Awards, as well as performing in bars across the country such as in New Orleans, Atlanta, Pensacola, Orlando, NYC, and now in Lafayette and Lake Charles. This multitalented queen diva does it all and on Friday, December 17th at Tonic you will be able to see her as Cher. Follow her reign that weekend as she parades into Crystal’s in Lake Charles on Saturday and commands a guaranteed unforgettable performance as she returns just in time for DJ Chad Evan’s birthday. Follow her reign back into Lafayette when she and Brodie Mess hosts Sunday Funday NOLA Style. This Sunday Funday is guaranteed to end the weekend in such a blasty blast that one will be talking about this event well into the New Year. Beginning at noon, lunch will be provided, $2 mimosas and Christmas JellO shots. VIP Table/Bottle service is available for $200 for you and four guests and limited so hurry to book your spot. VIP service includes

a bottle of your choice and mixer, no cover, and a group photo with Bianca Del Rio as Cher. The table is yours for the Sunday show as well without the bottle service. On Sunday you may also enter free with an unwrapped boy to donate to Toys for Tots. For more information you may visit the Facebook event, “A Messy Weekend”, or search for Tonic on Facebook as well as call Tonic at 337.269.6011.

Closing Out

T

he closing of the year will soon be upon us. I’m still trying to grasp the year ‘2010’. I’m still thinking it’s 2009. I guess I’m the one who is in need of a real awakening. Maybe my new year’s resolution will be to put down that martini glass….nnaaaaahhhh! I almost believed it for a second. As always, keep safe this holiday season. Drive safely and enjoy each shared moment with friends, family, and that special someone. See you around at that after-party. As always, keep the party going Acadiana!

Bianca Del Rio Reigns

O

n Friday, December 17th, Bianca del Rio will reign once again in Acadiana when she hosts One Messy Weekend. If you are unenlightened to the styling of Bianca Del Rio then one can only ask, “Where the hell have you been?” Miss Rio is most definitely not your classic drag queen. She is an individual with a plethora of talents which range from theater, cabaret/bar scenes, costume designer, actress, and let’s not forget about being branded for her quick wit and comedic talents. As a costume designer she has received at least 13 Big Easy nominations and taken home 6 of the 13 nominations. When it comes to being in theater and an actress, Bianca Del Rio has traveled the country and has graced the stage in many performances such as Gypsy, Psycho Beach Party, as well as Bianca’s Remote Out of Control, which she wrote herself. She has gone on to win Entertainer of the Year and has held that title for three years. It’s
