Dog Days Coming: Lagniappe Classic All-Breed Dog Shows
T
he first weekend of August is right around the corner … and that also means it is time for the Lagniappe Classic Dog Show 2011 edition. This third annual event will once more be presented at the Pontchartrain Center on the Kenner lakefront on August 4, 5, 6 and 7. These all-breed dog shows will be presented by the Louisiana Kennel Club and the Metairie Kennel Club through their affiliation and in conformity with regulations of the American Kennel Club (AKC). The AKC recognizes over 160 distinct breeds and varieties of dogs in its official registry. The shows will draw representative entrants from most, if not all, of the varied and distinct breeds that make up the AKC’s 7 divisions or groups. Furthermore, the competitors (the dogs along with their owners and handlers) are expected to come from all over the United States. The Lagniappe Classic will present 4 full days (Aug 4-7) of all-breed competition. Each day culminates with the naming of one dog as “Best in Show.” The Classic will be preceded by several, individual breed “specialty” contests on Wednesday, August 3rd. The specialty breeds are: Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds, Poodles and Shetland Sheepdogs. In addition to conformation, where the dogs vie for ribbons, trophies and prizes based upon how well they meet the established standard for their own breed, there will also be Junior Show-
manship contests for young people 9 to 18 years of age. In Junior Showmanship, the dogs are not judged; instead, the youngsters are judged on their dog-showing abilities. Canine Good Citizen testing will be offered both on Saturday and Sunday. Testing will be done by appointment only and will be scheduled on the day of the show. Fees will apply at a per dog rate. There will also be a Parade of Rescue Dogs at noon on Saturday, August 6th. Various vendors will also be onsite offering a multitude of dog-related merchandise along with lots of other articles for purchase, making the Lagniappe Classic a prime destination for the serious dog-lover as well as anyone looking to learn about the different canine breeds, discuss adoptions with rescue group representatives or the pet-owner who simply wants to shop for a new collar, pet bed or feeding dish. Additionally, there will be fantastic raffle items that are sure to appeal to everyone. Of special note, The Pontchartrain Center, in conjunction with the Metairie and Louisiana Kennel Clubs, will be conducting a Canine Food Drive during the Lagniappe Classic. Contributions in the form of canned or dry dog food will be collected for distribution to the local dog shelters in the metropolitan area. Hours: Wed., Aug 3rd, 2-6pm; Thurs., Aug 4th, 8:30am-6pm; Fri., Aug 5th, 8:30am-6pm; Sat., Aug 6th, 8:30am - 6pm; Sun., Aug 7th, 8:30am6pm. Admission to the Lagniappe Classic dog shows is FREE and open to the general public. NOTE: only dogs registered/entered in the events noted above are able to attend. For additional information, call 985.764.0649 or 504.362.9835. The American Kennel Club is dedicated to upholding the integrity of its Registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function. Founded in 1884, the AKC® and its affiliated organizations advocate for the purebred dog as a family
companion, advance canine health and well-being, work to protect the rights of all dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership. The Louisiana Kennel Club was founded in 1916 to promote the welfare and improvement of pure-bred dogs. It is one of the oldest all-breed clubs in the State of Louisiana. Organized in 1976, The Metairie Kennel Club was created to further the advancement of all breeds of purebred dogs and to protect the interest of those breeds while encouraging good sportsmanship through competition in dog shows, obedience trials and sanctioned matches under the rules of the American Kennel Club.
U.S. Growing in Popularity as Destination for Transgender Surgery
B
ala Cynwyd, PA - A business owner from Saudi Arabia could have gone anywhere in the world for surgery to correct his lifelong gender ambiguity. He had been born with the male chromosome but had ambiguous genitalia. As a child, he was raised as a girl, but now as an adult, he wanted to define his gender identity by enhancing his male physical characteristics and be demonstrably the complete man he always felt he was. After a great deal of research, he selected Dr. Sherman Leis at The Philadelphia Center For Transgender Surgery and traveled to the U.S. to have the complex surgery performed to create normal size male genitalia and other male features. There was a time, when gender identity surgery was largely performed in countries like Thailand or Scandinavia. The United States was a minor factor. In the last decade or so, the United States has become one of the world’s top surgical destinations for transgender surgery. Many believe that success is due to friendlier cultural attitudes and dynamic pre and post-op support, together with America’s high quality medical care. In the Saudi
man’s case, Dr. Leis’ vast experience and track record greatly influenced his selection, however it was Dr. Leis’ diverse professional team, comfortable on-site accommodations, lifestyle support after the surgery, and devotion to the transgender community that helped make his decision so much easier. The man said, “There are a lot of experienced surgeons in the world, but surgery is only part of the experience. There are psychological, hormonal, and other medical needs that arise, as well as non-medical lifestyle issues that must be addressed in areas like speech, dress, hair, legal, cosmetic, [continued on 12]

Bartender of the Month: July
T
here is not much anyone can say about my next bartender of the month for July that people do not already know. He is probably one of the hardest working individuals in this city. And, now he is more than just a bartender, he is a partner in one the newest gay estab-
the "official" dish ...from 10 and others. Going to another country, I might have found a good surgeon, however I would have been on my own to take care of these other issues. I liked the convenience of going to one place and having an approved, experienced team available, all through one resource. They even helped me with my travel arrangements.” The man from Saudi Arabia initially first learned of Dr. Leis through the Internet, which is why Dr. Leis maintains an informative, well-visited W e b s i t e (www.TheTransgenderCenter.com) and Facebook fan page (facebook.com/transdoctor). Dr. Leis can also be found in his office working late into the night answering emails from patients and potential patients from around the world. Because of Dr. Leis’ active speaking and writing activities, the man was able to confirm Dr. Leis’ exceptional experience and capabilities online and then follow-up with interviews by phone to Dr. Leis, to some of his patients, and to respected transgender organizations, on the way to making his decision. Today, many of Dr. Leis’ patients are from abroad, a number that grows each year. He has identified a number of reasons why he believes the United States has become a leading destination for transgender surgery: - Safety. Any surgery, including transgender surgery has its risks. The United States has consistently rated at or near the top in surgical safety in an overwhelming number of categories, and specialties. - Accountability. Doctors in the U.S. subscribe to a consistent and high standard of quality and ethics. Also, thanks to actual, potential, or perceived oversight by numerous medical and legal organizations and others, doctors and hospitals in the United States have greater incentive to continually deliver the highest quality medical care. - Quality care and quality back-up. The United States continues to have the highest quality medical system in
lishments in Jefferson Parish. I met Toby Lefort years ago when I started doing work with the NO/AIDS Task Force, who he has worked tirelessly with for many years. And our paths crossed again when he went to work at Harrah’s, as still one of the best servers they had, and as bartender of the 4 Seasons in Metairie. [continued on 14] the world. Also, should an issue occur with surgery, a greater number of high quality back-up medical services are located more conveniently to patients in the United States. - A more accepting environment. For all the media attention devoted to bigotry and closed-mindedness in the U.S., the U.S. environment beats that of most other countries in degree of acceptability, especially those countries that have oppressive regimes with no tolerance for transgender issues. - Superior Experience. There are a number of doctors in the United States who specialize in transgender surgery and who have done so for decades with track records of exceptional surgical success. - Convenience. Having a familiar language, money, transportation, culture, and more help reduce stress. - Superior Patient Experience and Support. The United States excels in customer service. With transgender surgery, we looked at the patient experience and put together support and services, from our single resource, addressing the patient’s feelings and needs at every step of the process. Our practice even gives patients a cosmetic makeover; a day of beauty, grooming, hair styling, makeup and more, scheduled after recovery from surgery to start them on the right track towards feeling their best. The Philadelphia Center For Transgender Surgery is recognized as one of the leading facilities in the world specializing in gender reassignment surgery. It offers a uniquely supportive environment where one can connect with Dr. Leis’ surgical and non-surgical team of specialists - surgeons, psychologists, endocrinologists, aestheticians, speech therapists, legal experts, and others - all experienced and dedicated to the transgender community. The Philadelphia Center For Transgender Surgery was founded by Dr. Sherman Leis, one of the world’s pre-eminent transgender surgeons, to be a single source of information and expertise in medical care for the
transgender. Dr. Sherman Leis is Board Certified in General Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is Professor and Chairman of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Director of Residency Training in Plastic Surgery at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Leis is a world renown expert on cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and a dynamic speaker. He has published numerous articles in respected medical journals and media. The Philadelphia Center For Transgender Surgery is located in suburban Philadelphia at 19 Montgomery Avenue, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004 USA. Phone: 610-667-1888. Website: www.thetransgendercenter.com.
NGLTF Presents $200,000 Donation to The Miami Foundation’s GLBT Community Projects Fund
M
iami - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force announced this year’s donation of $200,000 to The Miami Foundation’s GLBT Community Projects Fund at a June 23 reception at Bacardi USA’s national headquarters in Miami. Nearly 200 supporters, volunteers, charity representatives and VIPs attended. The donation represents two-thirds of the net proceeds from the 2011 Winter Party Festival and the 14th Annual Recognition Dinner. The remainder of the proceeds will go to the Task Force’s efforts to achieve LGBT equality throughout the U.S. As he presented the giant symbolic $200,000 check, Russell Roybal, Task Force deputy executive director of external relations, said, “We at the Task Force have a very special relationship with Miami. Since taking over Winter Party and the Recognition Dinner a few years ago, we have ‘partied with a purpose’ at Winter Party and honored community leaders at the Recognition Dinner, all while raising a total of more than $1 million to support local community organizations and the amazing work they do.” In 2005, the Task Force assumed responsibility for the Miami Recognition Dinner and Winter Party Festival after the previous owner, the Gay and Lesbian Foundation of South Florida, closed its doors. In acquiring the events, the Task Force agreed to return the majority of the net proceeds of both events to the local community through The Miami Foundation, which in turn, established the GLBT Community Projects Fund to administer the donations through grants. “When the Task Force took over these two iconic events, we created a shidduch,” said Jerry Chasen, chair of the GLBT Community Projects Fund. “And while not a marriage in the literal translation of the word, it has become
a match between the wonderful staff and volunteers of the Task Force and the local community in which we live.” Chasen then asked for a show of hands from charity representatives who have directly benefited from The Miami Foundation grants made possible by the Task Force donations. Nearly two dozen guests responded as the other guests cheered and applauded. Previous grant recipients have included ACLU Foundation of Florida, Aqua Foundation for Women, Equality Florida, Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Pridelines Youth Services, Miami Beach Gay Pride, Safe Schools South Florida, SAVE Foundation and Switchboard of Miami. The upcoming Miami Recognition Dinner, “Sparkle,” will be held Oct. 15, 2011, at the Fontainebleau Hotel. Winter Party Festival 2012 will be February 29 to March 5 at venues throughout Miami Beach. For more information on these events or on the mission and work of the Task Force, visit www.thetaskforce.org. The mission of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is to build the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. We do this by training activists, equipping state and local organizations with the skills needed to organize broad-based campaigns to defeat antiLGBT referenda and advance proLGBT legislation, and building the organizational capacity of our movement. Our Policy Institute provides research and policy analysis to support the struggle for complete equality. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work to create a nation that respects the diversity of human expression and identity and creates opportunity for all. Each year the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, based in Washington DC, produces two signature events for Greater Miami’s GLBT community - the Winter Party Festival in the spring and the Miami Recognition Dinner in the fall. Thanks to the efforts of local GLBT leaders, a share of the proceeds from these events stays in the local community. In 2007, these leaders turned to The Miami Foundation to create the GLBT Community Projects Fund, through which grants are awarded each year to deserving nonprofits in Greater Miami. The Task Force had a commitment to ensuring that funds raised through these events in Miami-Dade County remain in the community. The Miami Foundation had a long-standing history of grantmaking to nonprofits working on gay and lesbian issues at the grassroots level. That combination provides Greater Miami an annual source of grant dollars dedicated to advancing education and public awareness around GLBT issues and supporting the local GLBT community. The Fund is staffed by the Foundation.

Book of the Month
I
know it has been a few months since I have done a book review, but my schedule has been pretty hectic. But I finally found the time to finish Dan Baum’s national bestseller about the Crescent City entitled Nine Lives. The novel tells the story of nine unforgettable New Orleanians whose lives were affected by two epic storms, Hurricane Betsy in the sixties and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The book grew out of Baum’s work covering Katrina and its aftermath for the New Yorker. Each of the characters epitomizes the melting pot of lifestyles in the Big Easy. From coroner Frank Minyard and King of Rex Billy Grace to band director Wilbert Rawlins Jr. and none other than Kajun’s Pub owner Joann Guidos, each person tells their frank and all too honest story in detail. Bookended by the hurricanes, the major happenings of New Orleans is played out through these people’s lives. This novel is one of the truest stories about our city and is a wonderful read. The pace of the books does tend to get a little bogged down in the middle, but picks up quickly near the end. Nine Lives is multiple slices of life in our fair city showing the strength, spirit and culture of the people here. This is one book not to be passed up. And on a side note, if you go to the Kajun’s Pub, ask Joann
to tell you the vibrator story, or better yet, buy the book and read it for yourself.

Feeling the Pride
T
he last weekend in June was a busy one for me as I attended Pride celebrations in our state’s capital as well as our own hometown of New Orleans. Both festivals were successful and showed our community in a positive light. Early Saturday morning, my friend Chris (aka Barbara Ella) and I trekked to Baton Rouge for their Pride which was held in the Atrium located downtown. Now those people have a splendid idea with their location. It was in a spacious indoor facility that was air conditioned. Absolutely brilliant. NOLA take note, no sweating. They had over 20 exhibitors; a very busy kids’ area and free food, which was surprisingly very good. But the main focus was the stage with great entertainment throughout the day such as singer and actor Josh Duffy and the New Orleans Gay Men’s Chorus. One of my favorite acts was the The Krewe of Divas. They were originally established as a Mardi Gras krewe in 2004. This great group of men and women are a non-profit working to bring “UNITY” to the Baton Rouge area. They hold their Bal Masque on pride week and it is one of the most popular events in town. Throughout the year their performers entertain at various establishments and are considered pillars in the gay community. Helmed by the fabulous Chica La Rouge, their show was camp and glitz all rolled up into one. These girls know their audience and played to them perfectly. But my favorite part of the day was after the festival, when Chris and I went shopping in Baton Rouge. Okay, who knew that they have better shopping in
Red Stick than they do in the Crescent City? I mean the Mall of Louisiana and the areas surrounding such as Perkins Row are amazing. It is retail therapy at its best. After spending some quality time and money, we drove back to our Crescent City just in time to catch the Harrah’s block party. They had a nice crowd with misting tents, a bar and a DJ that kept the energy high. But alas, all the excitement of the day tired me out, so I found myself fading early. But the following day, I awakened fresh and ready for a day of Pride. I live in the Marigny, so I began my day with a small libation at JohnPaul’s on Elysian Fields. It was there I ran into Tami Tarmac and my interesting adventure for the day began. Tami was with her handler husband and drag painter extraordinaire (creator of Tami and many more ladies) Paul. They were heading down to the parade start via taxi. They graciously asked me to join them so soon we were on our merry way. The gaiety at the beginning of the parade was electric. I think last year Pride made a new name for itself, with this year following not only in its footsteps but in some ways moving up a notch. Tami and Cathy Fox (who was dressed incognito as Kevin) had their own convertible driven by Paul. I want to thank all three of them for allowing me to ride shotgun in the front seat. It was a really fun experience. Riding in a parade alongside the “Great Wall of Drag” is truly a once in a lifetime occurrence. Not only did she make a mix tape for the CD player, but she lip synced every song the entire route of the parade. Now talk about a true performer. The crowds were large and cheering. Now I know how much fun the parade is, next year, I am all in. I might even do duets with Tami for the entire route.
"Tami Tarmac & Cathy Fox (who was dressed incognito as Kevin)" After the parade, we were ready for some entertainment; there were a few performances by Tami, and Adonis just to name a few. The vendor fair behind the stage was crowded with many organizations present showing their support. The stage soon kicked into high gear with the talented Amanda Shaw who was sporting some fabulous drag queen shoes. She pointed out that they were a size six, so fortunately she was safe. Then Jason
Dottley came on with his high energy show and even more kinetic back up dancers. Eighties pop star Tiffany came on and brought the evening to a close. The Quarter was alive the entire day, even Halloween held their host party from 3 to 5pm that afternoon upstairs at Oz. What an incredible way to celebrate pride. On the way home I stopped at JohnPaul’s for Tittie and Electra’s show, where they allow anyone who wants to be a drag queen perform regardless of talent and aptitude. I thought it was quite entertaining, but then again I was s**t balls drunk by that time so I may not be the best judge. But I am sure it was enjoyable for a good laugh. Congratulations to Pride Grand Marshals Chris Leonard and Misti Ates who did a phenomenal job this year. I see bright futures for both of you in the gay community. And a special nod to Adonis, you worked it very well as Mr. NOLA Pride. Another job well done, see you next year.
Tony’s Tidbits of Gay Wisdom
I
am pretty up to date on current trends, and for the most part, I like the way we are becoming a more connected society, but there is one thing that just gives me the creeps. Grindr. I mean come on guys, honestly, it is like cyber bathhouses without the cover charge. Well there is the monthly fee, but you do not have to buy drinks. I think that some of these websites like Man for Man, craigslist, manhunt, and grindr are destroying the gay bar scene overall. Why go out when you just can go online and order in so to speak. It is like cruising for lazy (and cheap) people. And doesn’t anyone think it is pretty disturbing that when you go and look at some of these guys on Grindr, it says they are less than five feet away from you. Very stalkeresque to me. I know it saves time on the whole small talk issue, but at some point there is a disconnect. Wasn’t half the fun meeting someone in person, getting to know them briefly then hopping in the sack with them? Long term relationships are not born out of virtual meetings on those type of sites. So next time you go out, here is a novel concept, put down the cell phone and actually talk to someone, have a real conversation, you may end up liking them more than superficially. Then you can get to doing the naughty things. It is not like you have to call them the next day, and with this technique they do not have your information on their phone. If you have an event or news item you would like me to cover in this column, please contact Tony at tonymgp@hotmail.com.

spotlight feature CHANGE Coalition Delivers HIV/AIDS Report Card to the City of New Orleans: New Orleans Among Top Ten Cities for AIDS Case Rates; HIV/AIDS Needs to be a Top Public Health Priority
3
0 years ago, in the month of June, the epidemic we have come to know as AIDS, first appeared in print. Over the past 3 decades, there have been many advances in care and treatment of AIDS and HIV. Despite those advances, HIV and AIDS continues to be a public health threat. Almost half of all Americans know someone living with HIV. Moreover, every 9 ½ minutes, someone is the United States in infected with HIV Last July, President Obama released the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which stated, “Right now, we are experiencing a domestic epidemic that demands a renewed commitment, increased public attention, and leadership.” Nationally we have acknowledged the domestic impact of this disease. The time has come that we must realize the impact it has had on our own community, and we must react accordingly. The New Orleans area has been hit hard by this epidemic. For the past 5 years, New Orleans has been ranked among the top 10 metropolitan areas for AIDS case rates in the US. There are nearly 7,000 individuals living with HIV in the New Orleans metro area with over 400 persons newly diagnosed as of 2010. Nearly 70% of newly diagnosed cases are among African Americans. Although the CHANGE Coalition recognizes great strides and improvement in our community’s system of HIV care and treatment, the administration and our community together must do better to maximize the resources available for care and support to individuals living and struggling with HIV. We do want to recognize the efforts that the current administration has made in bringing on exceptional people into City Hall. Dr. Karen DeSalvo has been named as the City ÿHealth Commissioner, and Stacey Horn-Koch is the Director of Community Development. Both have a strong commitment to HIV/AIDS issues and have demonstrated their support in correcting some of the bureaucratic barriers that currently exists within our governmental systems. The CHANGE Coalition calls for a renewed effort by providers, community and government – all together -to improve our processes to ensure efficiencies in managing grants and resources to ensure our brothers, sisters, neighbors, friends and family have optimal access and the best opportunity to thwart off disease progression and maintain quality care and a life with dignity. The CHANGE Coalition has prepared this report card to serve as a baseline for how to improve care, treatment and prevention of HIV in our community. Grants Administration / Grade: D The CHANGE Coalition believes that the city of New Orleans must improve grants administration, payment and monitoring processes to ensure that funds for HIV/AIDS services are distributed in a timely manner and are spent fully and effectively. For too many years the process has been extremely slow in getting contracts drawn up and signed and funds dispersed for major funding for HIV/AIDS services, namely Ryan White funds and Housing Opportunities for People With AIDS (HOPWA) funds. In all fairness, we must acknowledge that federal resources have been slow in reaching New Orleans for HIV care and housing, but we must figure out better methods to expedite access to these resources. We must also advocate on the national level to improve systems of moving these vital recourses to local grantees. While the process has improved somewhat for Ryan White funds through the Office of Health Policy in the last two years, there are still no signed contracts 4 months into the current year. More troubling is that there has been very little movement in the HOPWA grant and contract process nearly 7 months in. This is treading dangerously close to having housing services denied to people living with HIV/AIDS and could result in potential homelessness. The delays in contracting and fund dispersal have been ongoing for nearly 15 years. It is important to note that these grants often comprise the majority of many organizations’ budgets, the very community based organizations that have been entrusted to provide vital care and services to men, women and families infected and affected by HIV disease. These organizations provide treatment and care to not only those living in New Orleans, but to the entire EMA, which is made up of 7 or 8 parishes (depending on the funding source). The delays in funding have the potential to affect not just the health of those in the City of New Orleans, but an entire region. Housing / Grade: CThe CHANGE Coalition believes that the city of New Orleans must improve
fund allocation for housing services to keep pace with the changing face of the epidemic. Currently, funding for housing (thru HOPWA) primarily goes towards assisted living for people living with HIV/AIDS and emergency short term assistance. While this is an important piece in the continuum of care, it does not reflect the full needs of the community. As people living with AIDS continue to live longer, greater emphasis is need on independent living and permanent supportive housing. Additionally, in the process of designing a consolidated housing plan for the City of New Orleans, there was no input from the AIDS community. For the past 16 months, the city has struggled with making $250,000 of HOME funds available for tenant based rental assistance. We are anxious to have these vital funds finally accessible to house individuals struggling with housing. Last year, for the first time, the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) allowed preferences for 200 Housing Choice vouchers for people living with HIV/AIDS. This is an incredible achievement for our community (at lease for Orleans). The most glaring issue continues to be the glacial pace at which contracts are awarded, signed and funds distributed. Medical Care / Grade: B+ The area has a broad network of stellar HIV medical care providers as well as a number of access points for care and treatment for individuals living with HIV disease. Funding comes from a number of federal sources, namely Ryan White Care Act (Parts A, B, C and D). The slow pace of federal and local grants administration continues to be a potential threat to medical care. Additionally, lack of prevention funding can affect HIV Counseling and Testing programs which is a primary conduit for getting people into medical care. While the current AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) crisis is something the city has no control over, lack of access to medications for some patients can prove to be a barrier to care. Prevention / Grade: BThe area’s HIV Prevention resources are being maximized in the best way possible. Unfortunately, those resources are not enough. Funding for prevention comes mostly from the federal level either directly from the Centers for Disease Control to communitybased agencies or through the state. (Recently the legislature slashed the HIV Prevention budget for the entire state in half from $2.4 million to $1.2 million and is expected to eliminate any state generated funds entirely.) The city of New Orleans or neighboring
parishes provides no HIV Prevention funding. While we realize that we are in a current fiscal crisis, we hope the city will review its priorities in the future to include dollars for HIV Prevention. Funding for prevention is vitally important not only because it has been proven effective, but also because it is fiscally responsible. The cost of prevention of 1 case of HIV is 1/6 of the cost of the treatment of 1 case HIV. Supportive Services / Grade: C Supportive services cover a breadth of program and service areas not limited to medical case management, mental and behavioral health, food and emergency financial assistance. Supportive services are important for helping those living with HIV/ AIDS not only access medical care but remain in care. They ensure that a clients basic needs are met, thus alleviating stresses and barriers, and allowing them to focus on health care. There continue to be gaps in many of these needed services such as: substance abuse, mental health, transportation to medical appointments, life skills and traditional non-medical case management. Also, funding for supportive services has been reduced recently and diverted to medications as a result of the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) crisis. As you can see there is room for improvement in many areas. The CHANGE Coalition is more than willing to work with leaders in our region to help improve the continuum of care and HIV prevention in our community. It will take the efforts of providers, elected officials, organizations and community leaders to enact real change, Real change must occur because we have a moral imperative to ensure that our citizens are properly cared for. We are aware that significant change in many of these areas could require significant financial investment during a time when budgets are already extremely tight. But ensuring that there are adequate resources for HIV prevention and care is fiscally responsible. The first step to improving the regions response to HIV and AIDS is through open and cooperative dialogue. That is why Friday morning, through a partnership with Health HIV, The CHANGE Coalition convened an HIV Government Leadership Summit with elected and appointed officials from the city and our region, area service providers, and Johnny Ford, Former Mayor of Tuskegee, Alabama and Founder of the World Conference of Mayors. T
onic is continuing the tradition with Monday night’s Customer Appreciation Night. Or just call it CAN for short. Amazing drink specials reign including $1 wells, $2 domestics, and $3 premiums. Don’t forget that you also have the chance to win cash with Brodie Meche’s Beer Pong Tournament. Tuesday Night still remains the cream of the crop when it comes to wigs and makeup. Enjoy Tuesday Night Talent Show now hosted by Roxie. Wednesday night features karaoke followed by Thursday where DJ Point n Click will play whatever you want from his favorite playlist. Don’t forget that Friday ushers in the weekend with Ladies Night. Remember, you must be 18 to cum but 21 to swallow. Jules has rolled out its new drag series and it has definitely made down-
town even more colorful. Enjoy each Friday night when either Blake Duhon or Steven Rogers hosts a theme-inspired show. Themes vary from disco, Glee, Gaga, and other unique scenes. Thursday is a country-free karaoke hosted by Blake Duhon. I’ve also heard through the gay vine that a huge party is soon to make its way to Jules. Please stay tuned for details. As always, don’t forget to follow these groups on Facebook: Ambush Magazine, Lafayette Gay Men, Lafayette Lesbians, Jules, and Tonic. Ambush is always accessible at AmbushMag.COM.

Nonetheless, times like this remind me why I should always keep my spirits high. Remember that your family and your friends (your assumed family) are your best therapy. Keep the party going Lafayette!

a community within communities Ubuntu by The Rev. Bill Terry, Rector St. Anna’s Episcopal Church n 2008 Bishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Lauriat, said “One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu – the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can’t exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can’t be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality – Ubuntu – you are known for your generosity. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole World. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.” Ubuntu is far overdue in our own city in that this way of being recognizes that if one person is shown disrespect we are all shown disrespect – we are all devalued. The “Black Pride” movement was birthed in the 1960’s and taking hold in the 1970’s was an engine that said and continues to say “I am __________ and I am Proud!” These movements like the “Stonewall Riots” were a response to dehumanization

and disrespect. The quest was simple, “I have value.” Perhaps it is time to shift the conversation to “We have value.” Perhaps it is time to think in terms of risks and challenges that embrace honest and authentic community without sacrificing our tapestry of diversity. In July 2005, while watching the evening news, Vicki my wife, turned to

r. Henry Lee “Trey” Mangum III passed away on Friday, June 17, 2011 at University Hospital in New Orleans. He leaves behind a legacy of hope, care and compassion for people affected by HIV and AIDS Trey was born on October 18, 1974 in Jackson. He graduated from The Mississippi School of Math and Science in 1993. Trey continued his education, earning his Bachelor Degree in 1997 from Millsaps College, a Master of Communication from Mississippi College, a Master of Social Work in 2004 from the University of Texas and his PhD in Social Work from Jackson State University. A resident of Jackson and New Orleans, Trey served as the Executive Director of Grace House from 20052010. During that time he obtained a $1.2 million Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) grant, that allowed the organization to expand and open the first permanent housing in Mississippi for people living with HIV/ AIDS. Mangum was currently the Director of Housing for NO/AIDS Task Force in New Orleans, a position he had held since January of 2010. He was instru-
me during a murder report and said, “Where was that?” I said,”Don’t worry it’s across town.” The next evening as we read our books and got ready for sleep... POP - POP, POP, POP...gunfire rang out. We ran to the door and across the street a young man lay dead just a dozen feet from our door. His girlfriend was shouting and wailing like Irish keening. As a priest I tried to approach but police kept me from giving comfort or even the Last Rites to the boy for fear of “contaminating the crime scene.” I lacked ubuntu then but embrace it now. A person shot anywhere for any reason affects me and affects all of us – we are all diminished. One of the most tragic responses is “they deserved it” or “they did it to themselves.” This response clearly diminishes the very sacredness of human life – all human life. Since 2007 St. Anna’s Church on Esplanade has listed the names of each murder victim boldly on the wall of the church. When viewing it one becomes very aware of the urban holocaust that we are in – what a waste of humanity. The board does not differentiate between good people or bad people rather it simply lists people – Ubuntu. The question must be asked, “Are we all in some way responsible?” Ubuntu. A child left alone cannot prosper. A human in isolation cannot flourish. A community set apart and not engaged
maintains the status quo that results in holocaust. So how shall we engage? How do we live out this idea of Ubuntu? We have begun and must continue with programs like Buzzy’s Kids, Anna’s Food Pantry, Dodwell House, NORD, and so on. Funding and volunteering to assist ‘at-risk’ children will begin to, in time, dignify future adults. With dignity, despair begins to diminish. Where do you spend your time? Where do you spend your money? Where do you find your heart? Is there room in all of that to support these children? Engaging can be risky. But can we continue to stand apart? Can we remain risk free and expect violence to diminish? No. Consider participating in fundraising for at-risk children. Consider seeking out and offering time and talent to support intervention programs. Teach a child to read, to dance, to make music, to live with dignity; seek ways to serve. Do not be afraid to march with pride and dignity into a center and volunteer; become connected and claim your dignity and integrity by proclaiming the dignity and integrity of the others - Ubuntu. “For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.” Psalm 84
by HIV/AIDS in both Mississippi and Louisiana in only 6 years. He was well respected both regionally and nationally as a leader in his field. More importantly, he was a fierce advocate for people affected by this disease. He made a difference in countless people’s lives.” Trey enjoyed reading, swimming, attending the theatre, traveling extensively throughout the world and spending time in the French Quarter. Survivors include his partner of 7 years, Keith W. Bliven of Jackson; parents, Henry Lee Mangum Jr. and Cloma
Crabdree Mangum of Mendenhall, MS; aunt and uncle, Tom and June Layton of Mendenhall and numerous cousins and other family members. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace House, 236 Millsaps Avenue, Jackson, MS 39202, NEAC, www.neac.org, or the Episcopal Conference Center at Kanuga, Post Office Box 250, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28793. Plans for a local memorial will be available once details are finalized. For further info, please contact info@noaidstf.org.

later.
Regulations and snafus can be difficult to navigate and causing stress and expense in the future… One question is, will gay couples be treated in the same manner financially as heterosexual couples? The answer is yes and no. “For example, in Connecticut, the Supreme Court recognized gay marriage in 2008 and the legislature codified it,” says matrimonial attorney Richard Terbrusch of the Terbrusch Law Firm, LLC. “Essentially, this made the state’s laws on marriage and divorce gender and orientation neutral.” “But the word ‘essentially’ is where the rub lies. Because the federal government and some states don’t recognize same sex marriages, these [continued on 37]

commentary ...from 36 couples face a number of challenges impacting the transfer of wealth upon marriage, divorce or death. Over 1,000 federal laws take marital status into account, often with negative consequences.” For example, on the federal level, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) prevents same sex couples from: * Filing joint tax returns; * Obtaining Social Security Survivor benefits; *Taking advantage of spousal transfer exemptions for estate planning purposes. Take the example of a gay couple in Massachusetts who had been together for sixty years. They were officially married in 2004 shortly after it became legal to do so in Massachusetts. When one spouse died in 2008, the surviving spouse was blocked from receiving social security survivor benefits because the marriage, although recognized under state law, was not recognized under DOMA. While the benefit amounted to only $700 per month, multiplied over the rest of the surviving spouses’ lifetime it could have easily been worth $100,000. Additionally, almost like a will, a pension may not be awarded to a partner in a state where gay marriage is not legal.
recognize gay marriage - they may not be able to get divorced in their home state. The non-recognition of their marriage in their home state means they will not be able to take advantage of that state’s divorce laws when dividing their financial assets, even if those terms are advantageous.” Additionally if couples travel to a state to get married and then later return there to get divorced, it won’t happen quickly. At least one partner needs to live in the state for at least 12 [continued on 38]
Financial complications are not the only problem, what if they don’t live happily ever after… “And there are other complications. Case in point, getting married in one state does not necessarily confer jurisdiction to be divorced in another state,” Terbrusch adds. “If a same sex couple travels to a state to marry from a home state that does not

months before the couple can be divorced there. The Obama administration’s recent decision not to defend DOMA in court will have little day-to-day impact for married gay couples. However, while those challenging DOMA in court – a costly and long process – may not face opposition from Obama Administration lawyers, they may suffer from the adverse consequences at the state level. Furthermore, federal agencies must still follow and enforce DOMA until such time it is overturned or repealed. Finally, the Obama administration’s decision has no effect on state laws in states where gay marriage is not recognized. There is a way to avoid the pitfalls… “Fortunately, most of the unfavorable aspects of non-recognition can be defeated through a well drafted prenuptial agreement.” Terbrusch adds. “For example, a same sex couple can, in the event of a divorce, agree to submit themselves to the jurisdiction of their state’s courts (and require physical relocation if necessary) in the event that they have relocated to a non-recognition state since becoming married.
