Tears The political conventions have been entertaining to say the least and they seem to be only a comic relief from the trauma that the world is experiencing. Sometimes I must admit that I just don’t feel traumatized. Sometimes I think that such horrors are so far away even Baton Rouge far. My life is mostly driving from the Lakeview area to the Tremé. I spend several hours around a great bunch of folks doing mostly good work. On occasion, before heading home, my wife and I may stop in at one of the local watering holes to check in with friends, have a cocktail, and just relax. If the worlds hurt are brought up it is usually in an almost abstract way. I have yet to go out and about and see

any real tears shed except perhaps during gatherings where the social pressure, ambiance, and milieu lend themselves to tears- like candlelight vigils and such. I suppose that is why, when I see a very angry woman hollering in cameras at a demonstration I can glibly think she is overreacting. That is why when I listen to the political rhetoric I can keep a safe and emotional distance and allow myself to be taken away with a novel or video that is fantasy at its best (yes, I love Game of Thrones). I know as sure as the sun will rise that when I go home my four dogs will greet me, my

Tittie Toulouse Since Southern Decadence is just around the corner, I decided to interview one of our past Southern Decadence Grand Marshals. Tittie (no middle initial) Toulouse was Southern Decadence Grand Marshal XXXV in 2009, the year that Southern Decadence “Blew Back” after being cancelled in 2008 due to Hurricane Gustave. But, before I elaborate on that colorful year with bars adorned in black, silver and red, I want to take you back in time and tell you all about a drag queen who was first known as Cuddles. Cuddles came to life and was thrust into the spotlight at the 1997 Amon-Ra Sister Sunday Social to raise money for the krewe. As she entertained the audience with "Stay with Me" from "The Rose," there was a buzz amongst the crowd, that indeed a star was born that day. Those were the days when drag was more of a camp and comedic presentation unlike most of the pageantry productions of today. You might say, Cuddles was full of camp back then. It was at the Sister Sunday Social, Electra City and Cuddles performed their first duet together the Tittie Toulouse song “Class” from the musical, "Chi& Misti Ates Gaither cago." Cuddles and Electra City were not only partners on stage, but also in show. It was there that I first made my acquaintance with Miss Toulouse. I life. communities ...from 8 wife will be there, and my easy chair will be bruised but comforting. My drive home along Esplanade to City Park is lovely and the only care I have is a velocopedist rocketing by without warning on a cross street. Otherwise all is well and all things shall be well. Life goes on right? I suppose that for many the Pulse shootings are a bit of a memory. When was the last time you actually thought of that night? Black men being shot, that still gets a little air play but its fading. Officers shot and killed, that may take some time but it may fade as well. Then again, I am not a police officer that goes on patrol each night. I am not a black teenager walking home after dark held to be suspicious just because I am black. I am not an aid laying down in the street saying, “don’t shoot it’s just a toy truck” worrying about a mentally ill patient that is surrounded by police who are nervous themselves. I don’t live in poverty so I really don’t worry about the next meal, or making my kids happy with new shoes, or paying the rent or trying to figure what is more important to pay for water or electricity or any of the foregoing because I can maybe afford only one of them. Then, because part of what I do is work with children some of whom are in that situation, you know –poverty I get smacked. Sitting in a room with a group of kids say about 13 years old one says, “It seems like if one black dude does something people think all black people are like that.” Or a little pixie of a black girl says, “God just make us all love each other. From my heart God I want you to love all of my family and my friends and all of the people.” Or, I stand and watch 35 children many of whom are from poor folks playing cello, trombone, trumpet, violin with such pride. Yep, it is “Twinkle twinkle little star” mostly on key but with pride. I get smacked. From ages 5 to 14 I know that these children’s lives are forever changed because of this little church program. I know that out of this score plus ten children none, surely none, will end up on St. Anna’s Murder Board. It was a day this past Sunday. Many of the congregation stayed and the church her soul mate, Electra City in 1994. The bar has become a hot spot for drag shows boasting of performances by some the girls from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Not too many drag performers can say they have had an illustrious drag career as Tittie Toulouse. In my opinion, anyone can get up on stage and perform. But, when you can hold the audience’s attention and have them ask for an encore, that is the difference between being a drag performer and being a drag star. Tittie Toulouse will always be a drag star.

was filled with parents and instructors and by standers. It was Anna’s Place NOLA end of Camp show. These children showed strength as they danced African dance, sang Zulu Hymns, played bits of classical music and of course “Twinkle twinkle little star.” The crowd was black, brown, white, gay and straight. The good part this year was that the children moved quickly from one piece to the next without the usual chaos. Knowing that I’d be going home soon and looking forward to my late Sunday nap I stayed to open with prayer and close with prayer. Well that little five year old did a fine job and got us all ready; you know “God in my heart just love us all.” I’d been hearing out of tune instruments and listening to pounding dance steps for four weeks so no surprises. I had been a disciplinarian to many of these kids. I had been the “enforcer.” The African drums began to beat and the kids ran and danced and sang and…. there I was hiding in a corner weeping. My life as I know it is changed once again. I will likely drive down Esplanade and enjoy the moment. I’ll still check in at some of my favorite pubs. News items will fade and the violence that so surrounds us will be overwhelming and then compartmentalized. But I will from time to time hide in a corner and weep. Compassion comes at the most inconvenient times for many of us. It is awkward and something maybe to be hidden, and so we stand in a corner or in the dark and weep. My tears in this case are complicated. They are tears for the possibilities that these children offer. They are tears because as a priest I am sure that this is what church should look like and be. They are tears that express my deep sorrow for lives lost because of all of the bad things that happen in this world. They are tears of gratitude for teaching me, reminding me, and making me human. I have one regret to share about that day, the day of the shape singing children of the Tremé, that is that I neglected to be more diligent in inviting you to join me to find a quiet corner in that noisy room to weep with me. I regret that leather boys and bears weren’t there; or that crusty bartender or hunk bartender or Queen of the cocktails bartender in most of my favorite spots couldn’t be there. I would have liked to have you all to have shared that moment in time when there was real hope, healing, and possibilities in the midst of a world gone nuts. Next year, be ready, you will be invited and I hope that you will join me for a good cry, perhaps in quiet, perhaps in public. “Then she knelt behind him [Jesus] at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.” Tears, for all that is possible.

The Illusion at Tulane’s Lupin Theater thru Aug. 6 Entering Tulane’s Lupin Theater, because of the masking effect of theatrical artifice, one is challenged to make out fully all the contours of Nicole Watts’ set. The lights then go down and when they come back up again, dimly, we are in the sorceress Alcandre’s craggy cave with some illuminated niches holding jars containing, well, who-knows-what. Pridamant (Silas Cooper), a bourgeois lawyer, enters and asks for Alcandre’s help in locating his son whom he had driven out of their home some years ago. It’s a fantastic beginning for a fantastical tale. The Shakespeare Festival at Tulane is to be commended for its ongoing repertory expansion beyond the Bard. But as Tony (Angels in America) Kushner’s adaptation of Pierre Corneille’s 17th century play L’Illusion Comique continues, what starts out as an unusual and intriguing thriller winds up as a bit of a shaggy dog story. Corneille described the play as “a strange monster” as it ranges over several theatrical genres and ignores the classical unities, things not done in under the gaydar ...from 18 dance band played some great tunes while the guests mingled and played with all the pool boys, I mean toys, sorry. The food was outstanding and prepared by Wilhemina, chef to the stars. I have to admit, being SD Grand Marshal is tiring but sooo much fun! On Saturday, I did something I haven’t done in a long time; attended Drag Brunch at The Country Club and it was fantastic. The food, service (Tony was our waiter) and show was superior and if I may say had improved since my prior visit. Moanalot, Coca and Gia gave it their all to the delight of patrons. Burt was also kind enough to give my clients and me a tour to see all the fabulous renovations and changes they have made. If you haven’t been to The Country Club in a while (sadly like I) then you are in for quite a treat. From the fun atmosphere to the delicious food, you will not be disappointed. On Sunday, more fundraisers, the first was for Southern Decadence at the Friendly Bar. Marty and Koo hosted SD Sister Sunday Social: Brunch and Jukebox Drag Show. The event brought out quite the crowd of supporters to enjoy good food and an afternoon of lively entertainment. The show was an eclectic mix of performers who raised a lot for the Southern Decadence charities. I especially loved it when Marsha Delain joined the stage for a group number. The day ended with a rousing “We Are Family” number with everyone

John Bostic & Lyndsay Kimball in The Illusion the 1600s. Kushner has streamlined the original five acts down to two, but keeps much of Corneille’s philosophizing about life and love leading to some overly verbose passages, especially in the first act. When Corneille/Kushner and director Chaney Tullos work their theatsecond lining around and even behind the bar. Now that is how you do a sister social! The next week was one of work from morning to night. Tales of the Cocktail was in town and they had me running like a crazy man doing lots of their events. I did manage to attend two opening events on Wednesday as a guest. The first was at the Ace Hotel. The ballroom had been transformed into a lush garden/forest setting with different wood gods in each room and of course different cocktails served throughout. There was even a cute takeaway idea for the night, a pencil thin tube swizzle stick that was also a vase was added to the cocktail with a single sprig of baby’s breath in it. Clever way to dress up a drink, someone had been on Pinterest. Then we moved over to the Orpheum Theatre for the after party with lots more alcoholic beverages. You even got served cocktails form inside a nose, very interesting. Cute takeaway from this party was the vodka jelly fish oversized candies. Now I need to make these at home, they were divine. On Thursday, it was my day to work late night at the Bacardi Portfolio party at the Sugar Mill. They threw an old fashioned block party complete with four homes built from scratch for the party. These were full on homes that looked like something out of a movie set with backyards, kitchens, bathroom and bedrooms. There was also over the top entertainment through-

rical magic involving scene changes and seeming character transformations, The Illusion’s mystery holds the audience in rapt attention. But the visions that Alcandre conjures up showing Pridamant’s son’s adventures require greater stylistic variety and, more importantly, an urgency in both action and the conveyance of the words’ underlying emotions that often eludes this production. If there is a tendency towards mere declamation (particularly from Michael A. Newcomer as the son), Lyndsay Kimball, as a wily maidservant, speaks the poetry effortlessly while nimbly revealing thoughts and feelings. Cristine McMurdo-Wallis makes a properly stern and intimidating Alcandre, while John Bostic as Matamore, the son’s employer and would-be romantic rival, after a merry comic turn in the first act turns serious to bring out his character’s pathos in the second. As the highborn object of multiple males’ attention, Devyn Tyler is charming, as she was in the recent Two Gentlemen of Verona, though she

could have found a little more nuance in her lines; that said, it could be Corneille/ Kushner’s wordiness at fault. Chivas Michael, playing the sorceress’ deaf/ mute Amanuensis, silently expresses the indignity of servitude and, transformed, becomes an unyielding father. Hope Bennett provides rich and sumptuous costumes. Martin Sachs’ lighting is dark and moodily effective as is Kevin O’Donnell’s sound design. Tullos, who also serves as the SF@T’s Director of Operations, makes a solid mainstage Festival debut with The Illusion. If the production doesn’t bring out all the script’s magic, it is still a welcome opportunity to see a rarely produced classic full of the fanciful romance of summer.

out the night. It goes without saying there was copious amounts of adult beverages. Friday, after working a grueling day, I came home and transformed into Edina Monsoon for the Ab Fab Premiere at Canal Place. With my cohort in crime Elizabeth Bouvier as Patsy Stone, we donned the outfits and attended the birthday party of Valerie Hart who bought out one of the theatres for our private event. It was all arranged by the lovely Coca Mesa, as we were her present. We cut up and had a blast; we ended up meeting old friends and making tons of new ones. Elizabeth and I even stumbled into the gym adjacent to the theatre to the horror of these muscle queens who looked at us with contempt. I just smiled and said honey if you were all that, you sure as shit would not be at a gym on a Friday night working out. It’s called friends, get some. Back to the movie, go see Absolutely Fabulous, all your old characters are back and there are tons of star cameos. After the movie, Elizabeth and I lived up to our characters and rolled into The Corner Pocket a hot Ab Fab mess. I would love to tell you more about the night, but I pretty much forgot most of it. So nothing bad happened. On Saturday, I actually attended the daytime events at Tales of the Cocktail. It was an array of tasting rooms and cocktails. One of the themed rooms was an old bordello where Princesse Stephaney was hired to play the madam. I love this convention every year even though they work me to death; it is so well worth it. That night, I attended the Gay Appreciation Awards at Oz. Lisa Beaumann and Teryl-Lynn Foxx were excellent emcees and all the bars nominated for

show club of the year brought the house down with their numbers. I especially enjoyed The Corner Pocket’s rendition of “Hey Big Spender” and the Four Season’s "Kinky Boots" homage. I even was lucky enough to be awarded the Gay Man of the Year Award. I am so humbled by this accolade and I appreciate everyone who voted for me. After a quick stop at Lafitte’s in Exile for a drink, a few of us went back to the Marigny to catch Regina Adams and Princesse Stephaney in the Golden Age Review at Mags 940. I love this show and the girls did an excellent job as always livening up the crowd. I ended my two weeks in the Redneck Riviera, Biloxi Mississippi. A group of us boarded the bus from here to go to the Just Us Lounge for a Southern Decadence fundraiser in honor of local boy and co-grand marshal Derek Penton-Robicheaux. Lynn Koval, the owner of Just Us Lounge, welcomed our group with open arms and brought a huge crowd to the event. There was a delectable home-cooked meal of BBQ, collard greens, and potato salad. The ribs were to die for. The party was in full swing with the talented band Rewind 228, which reunited the great talents of Lady Patrice Pickett and Johnny Fung. Following the band was a drag show starring Estelle Suarez, Toni D, Nicole DuBois, and Mercedes Alexander. It was quite the day, we even were able to jaunt off to the casino unnoticed for an hour to get my slot machine fix in. We raised a lot of money and had an enjoyable time, and big hugs out to our friends on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Also a tremendous shout out to Marty and Koo for attending along with Olive, SDGM XV. Until next issue, have fun and stay decadent.

Amon-Ra & Lords of Leather Fundraisers ~ New Orleans ~ Photos by Tony Leggio, Jeremy Weinberg

Amon-Ra's Burgers & Buns @ Good Friends Bar

trodding the boards ...from 20 New Orleans begins to fulfill its promise. Although the world premiere of two of Williams’ one-acts earlier this year was impressive, as it launches its second season, TWTCNO now tackles a major Williams play for the first time. If Tattoo is not wholly successful, it blossoms with clear purpose and a large, healthy dose of imagination. For those not familiar with the play or the film, which featured Anna Magnani’s Oscar-winning performance, The Rose Tattoo tells the story of Serafina delle Rose, an Italian-American widow in Mississippi who, after her husband’s unexpected death, has withdrawn from the world; concurrently, her teenage daughter is dealing with the first desires of sexual and romantic longing. Augustin J Correro’s production is messy, literally and metaphorically. By the end of it, flower petals, crockery, bouquets of roses, and god-knowswhat-else are strewn across the stage. As well, a bevy of local townswomen traipse around, peering in on the widow Serafina from all sides, while kids whiz by and a goat bleats throughout. But this is how it should be for a play that’s a messy blend of comedy and seriousness, one that almost has the feel of an old Sicilian fairy tale overlaid with some unsettling social commentary, and one in which a major character doesn’t arrive until well into the second act. Early on, in a lovely image, Correro drops black rose petals from above after Serafina’s husband is killed, and he leaves us with a final, highly satisfying coup de théâtre. At times, though, Correro seems to have too many ideas for his own good or, rather, they come off a bit fuzzily. While having an actress embody the Virgin Mary, a personification of the statue Serafina keeps, aptly comments on Serafina’s religious devotion, I don’t think it’s quite right using the same actress who portrays the blackjack dealer whom Serafina fears had an affair with her husband. Sure, Correro is referencing the Madonna/ whore complex that informs a number of Williams’ characters, yet I doubt Serafina herself would ever visualize

the Virgin with the physiognomy of her rival. Still, better to have too many ideas, especially interesting ones, than not enough. Correro adds some nice touches to show the passing of time; if they and other stage business inflate the show’s running time, this is an overall well-paced revival. It’s Correro’s work with his actors, though, that gives me pause. He’s elicited a range of styles from them— naturalistic, stylized and even cartoony. That’s all okay; portraying the local people as caricatures is valid as it heightens the small town hypocrisy that Williams abhorred. I just wish he had guided his principals to probe the text more deeply to make every word count (my feeling about The Illusion’s Tullos as well). As it is, Lillian J. Small as Serafina and Mike Spara as Alvaro Mangiacavallo, a truck driver who rekindles the warmth in her heart, certainly get the broad contours of their roles but were they to evoke more specifically their desperate emotional yearning, they would enrich what are already substantial performances. Spara, well known for his improvisation work around town, distinctly brings out the humor in Mangiacavallo— more than once, Serafina calls him a “clown”—but only hints at the lusty earthiness that reminds Serafina of her husband and so draws her to him. Small ably convinces that the spark has gone out of this youthful widow (Serafina was only 14 when first married); if she doesn’t give us the bonedeep, Italianate soulfulness of Magnani, well, who can? (The same observation was made about Marisa Tomei’s recent Serafina at the Williamstown Festival.) In their dance of two lonely souls trying to come together, Small and Spara do have moments when they connect deeply; I just wish there had been more of them. I suspect there will be as they grow into their roles throughout the rest of the show’s run. For now, one of the best scenes is when Serafina interrogates the wellmeaning sailor Jack Hunter (Matthew Raetz) about his intentions toward her daughter Rosa. Correro steers Small and Raetz to achieve just the right [continued on 26]

August 5 and 6 marks the 8th Mobile Bleather Weekend, billed as “The South’s Premier Bear/Leather/Levi Event”. Four bars in Mobile unite to present a weekend filled with contests, music and socializing, all centered around a theme. Friday kicks off with Opening Cocktails at 6:30 pm at Gabriel’s Downtown. Stop by, have a beer and mingle with the early arrivals. Gabriel’s provides the warm up for a brand new event for Bleather... the circuit dance party “Bearracuda” with DJ Ryan Jones in from L.A. to pump the party! BBob’s is the host bar for Bearracuda, with admission just $6 before 10 pm, $8 after. Bearracuda is already a hot ticket in London, Vancouver, Atlanta, San Francisco, Sydney, NYC and New Orleans to name a few. Mobile Bleather Weekend 2016 marks Bearracuda’s premier in the port city with support from Growlr. Looking for late night adventure? The Midtown Pub’s got it, with TMP’s Annual Notorious Black Party. The lights go low as DJ Scottie makes things go “thump” in the night. It’s over when it’s over, so don’t just come and go - stay a while! No pressure here, just a friendly game of toss that puts you mood for the Bear Games to come. The center piece of Mobile Bleather Weekend is the annual Mr. Gulf Coast Bear contest. But before that hot mess is the annual Mr. GCB Contestant’s Party at 6 pm at Gabriel’s Downtown. This year’s gathering will be hosted by the men from NOLA Leather to Geaux, providing some nibbles and a look at their 2017 run. This is also a good chance for late entries to sign up for... ...The 21st Annual Mr. Gulf Coast Bear Contest! This year’s pageantry takes on a sporting theme as we celebrate the Summer Games (we can’t use the “O” word) in Bleather style! Bear Games will give you an irreverent taste of Rio 2016 as our contestants display their competitive side in bear wear, bear image, and the ever popular “Less Is More” portion of the show. As always, Louisiville’s own A.J. McKay will unleash his potty mouth and unique world view on the contestants and the crowd. Contestants will “pass the boot” during the contest to benefit AIDS Alabama South, Mobile’s HIV/AIDS help agency. There’s a nice cash prize for the winning bear, a fab sash and adoration from everyone! Of course, the spectacle is followed by another, B-Bob’s Famous Floor Show, which happens after we clean up the mess. Mobile Bleather Weekend 2016 comes to a squeaky clean end with another new event... Gabriel’s Big Bleather Foam Party! It is exactly what the name implies, with Gabriel’s famous patio converted to a frothy dance emporium. Pay a small membership fee and you can dance till dawn! Throughout the weekend, we’ll be giving you the opportunity to win a $100 gift card for a delicious meal at either Felix’s Fish Camp or The Blue Gill, both on the

Mobile Bay Causeway, plus a manly gift basket featuring items from Mayo’s Barber Shop in Midtown. It’s all to benefit AIDS Alabama South. Remember, there is no run fee for Mobile Bleather Weekend. trodding the boards ...from 23 balance between comedy and drama. With his pretty boy looks and willing yet tentative attitude towards Rosa, Raetz leaves little doubt that his propriety when it comes to premarital whoopee with her is as much because of inchoate gay tendencies as it is to honor his vow to Serafina. While his properness may have been played straight back in the 1950s, Williams himself hints at the subtext by having Hunter state that his ship is heading to “Buenos Aires, Rio and San Francisco.” I detected a slight, and not inappropriate, twinkle in Raetz’s eye when he mentioned the last city. As Rosa, Linnea Gregg makes a suitably dramatic teenager, headstrong like her mother; a little more of the tender ache of the heart that the text suggests is all that’s missing. Michael Sullivan winningly delivers two different types of authority figures, a too slick priest and, more broadly, a nasty salesman who undoubtedly would be a Trump supporter. Destani Smith embodies the classiest blackjack dealer you’ll ever see and contributes an otherworldly demeanor as the Virgin. Yet it is Mary Pauley in the small but significant role of Assunta, Serafina’s confidant, who provides this Tattoo’s most memorable moment. It’s a minor but telling one. Serafina has needlessly insulted her friend. Pauley replies with a twisting clap of her hands as if to say “Bah! I’m done with you” and exits. Pauley may not have much stage time but with her stooped walk, feminist/ hippie-ish costume, curly grey wig, subtle facial expressions, and gestures

matters of health by Jack Carrel, MPH

Health Status Linked to Sexual Orientation A study published in a recent issue of JAMA Internal Medicine not surprisingly found that LGBTQ adults are more likely to have psychological and physical health issues that straight people. The data is from the National Health Interview Survey. The results showed that gay and bisexual men were more likely to describe suffering from severe psychological distress, drink heavily and smoke than heterosexual men. Severe psychological distress was reported by 6.8 percent of gay and 9.8 percent of bisexual men, and only 2.8 percent of straight men. Also, 11 percent of bisexual women reported psychological issues and substance abuse problems, versus 5 percent of lesbian women and 3.8 percent of heterosexual women. Study authors theorized that the stigma and bias that the LGBT community faces and the chronic stress that results, can seriously impact health and that health care providers should keep this in mind to ensure equitable health care for all their patients.

HIV Seroconversion is Rare if PrEP is Used Consistently In a study presented at the recent American Society for Microbiology Microbe, researchers reported that new HIV infections were at a low rate of about 1 per 100 person-years among people who took daily Truvada for PrEP, with infections mostly in participants who stopped taking PrEP. The study was an analysis of more than 30 studies and demonstration projects presented last month at the ASM Microbe 2016 conference in Boston. trodding the boards

...from 26 like this one, she fully conjures up Assunta’s personality. Jerry Johnson’s scenic design, including a wall of shutters and a large rose hovering over the stage, adds lyrical grace to the production as does Missy Martinez’s variously hued lighting. The cast does have to do a better job, however, of projecting lines from offstage; the scenery seems to muffle them and I wasn’t the only one who had trouble understanding them. The last Rose Tattoo I saw was at Le Petit in 2003. It was a fairly traditional production and utterly unmemorable. Leaving this Tattoo, I was pleased to have experienced not only a wonderfully messy version of Williams’ odd Gulf Coast dramedy of love and redemption, but what I hope will be The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans’ ongoing blooming into artistic maturity.

PrEP Use is Rising Fast in US More than 49,000 people in the US have filled prescriptions for Truvada for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) at retail pharmacies, according to the results of a survey by Gilead Sciences presented at the ASM Microbe conference. Among those PrEP users, most were white gay men; Blacks used PrEP much less often, despite having the highest rates of HIV infection. At a conference in 2013 Gilead researchers presented findings from a survey of 55% of US pharmacies showing that fewer than 1300 Truvada prescriptions were written in 2012 for people who did not already have HIV or hepatitis B. About half of these PrEP recipients were women.

Factors Affecting Cervical Cancer Screening A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing reported factors that impact cervical cancer screening among lesbian and bisexual women and transgender men, which can affect health outcomes. Some of the factors overlap with the general female population but some are specific to LBT individuals. Patients who were screened routinely felt more welcome in the health care setting, while nonroutine screeners reported more discrimination related to their sexual orientation and gender expression. Routine screeners were also more likely to ‘out’ to their provider. “Our research findings add to the growing body of literature that suggests unwelcoming healthcare environments is a major contributing factors to lack of preventive screening among LGBT people,” said Dr. Michael Johnson, lead author of the study. “The healthcare landscape needs to be more affirmative and inclusive for LGBT people, and this can only be achieved if each healthcare professional, especially nurses and providers, educate themselves on how to provide better care to LGBT people.”

Birth Control App Wants To Reduce the 3 million Unintended Pregnancies In The US You might be saying why is there an article about birth control in an LGBT column? Well, did you know that pregnancy rate for LBT teenagers is two to seven times greater than their heterosexuals? Given the challenges LGBT individuals have seeking appropriate health care, you can imagine the discussion around birth control can be challenging. To try to make birth control more accessible, a health care company has developed an app. NURX developed a website and app started by two male entrepreneurs based out of San Francisco, who want to ensure that healthcare is more accessible, and

not just a service set aside for those in a certain financial bracket.Hans Gangeskar and A. Edvard Engesaeth (who is an MD) are the co-founders of Nurx, which allows women with insurance to get birth control free, and noninsurance customers to purchase it for $15. The best part is that it is delivered to a customer’s house. They have a team of medical doctors who can answer any questions. The site also offers PrEP. The downside? At the moment, it’s only available in California and New York but….who knows what could happen in Louisiana! To check out the program, go to www.nurx.com

Transgender People Worldwide Face Challenges for Health Care The influential medical journal, The Lancet, recently published a series of papers highlighting health issues in the transgender community. This is the first time such a journal has devoted a series to transgender health. Some of the data presented in the studies included transgender women, who often face job discrimination and turn to sex work, have a 49 times greater risk of HIV. Transgender people are also frequent victims of violence, with researchers documenting 2,115 killings between 2008 and April 2016. One paper in the series notes that many regions still have laws or policies that threaten transgender health, such as the 17 European countries that impose sterilization on people seeking gender reassignment. Studies showed there are an estimated 25 million transgender people globally. Transgender people suffer high rates of depression - up to 60 percent - due to stigma, discrimination and abuse, jeopardizing their physical and mental health. Jack Carrel, MPH has worked in HIV, STD, and LGBTQ health for over 30 years. Currently he is a doctoral student at Walden University, a consultant in grant writing. “History is Put to a Vote” Even though the Republican and Democratic conventions are behind us, the political rhetoric is just starting to heat up. Facebook and other social media are still “feeling the Bern” from the Bernie-Busters. Hillary is trying to ignore her haters and the Donald is proving himself more than capable of topping the last outrageous thing he has said. Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein continue to register trace elements of support in the polls. Yet other candidates of minor parties are floundering at the back of the pack. The election is November 8. I see the election through a historical lens; more specifically, as a referendum on the strides we have made in the last several years. Many of the victories we have won—repeal of DOMA, the invalidation of Proposition 8, marriage equality, etc.—have been won in the court system. Our next president will likely appoint two to four Supreme Court Justices and hundreds of federal judges to the lower courts. That matters because court decisions can be reversed. The landmark Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education (1954), which outlawed racial segregation, reversed Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896), a case that originated in New Orleans

when Homer Plessy refused to disembark the “white” streetcar and board the “colored” one. The Supreme Court ruled against Plessy, thus establishing the legal principle of “separate but equal.” A short 48 years later, a different Supreme Court summarily reversed a previous Supreme Court’s decision. It has happened many times and it can happen again. That is why this election is so important for LGBT+ people. Of all the parties on the November 8 ballot, there is one party that has codified its homophobia in its official platform. Gregory Angelo, President of the Log Cabin Republicans (a group of gay republicans—yes they do exist,

even though the phenomenon is difficult to fathom, kind of like Jews for Hitler), observed of the 2016 Republican platform, “It’s the most anti-LGBT platform in history.” In brief, the platform: *supports legally re-defining marriage as between one man and one woman *supports conversion therapy (ie— praying the gay away and turning homosexuals straight) *supports a ban on gay couples adopting *supports “religious freedom” legislation which would allow discrimination *supports anti-transgender legislation regarding bathrooms Yes, for the first time ever a major political party has included a plank in its platform regarding where people can take a piss. And the language endorsing conversion therapy was drafted by Louisiana’s own Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council. If Donald Trump wins the presidency, his judicial nominees will roll back our rights and freedoms. Think of the Wizard of Oz in reverse. Dorothy and her fabulous shoes are forced to leave the colorful and magical land of Oz to return beyond the rainbow to the hum-drum, black and white desolation of Kansas, the closet if you will. The closet is exactly where the

Republican Party would like us. That is why they are saying, “Pay no attention to that man behind the orange skin.” But we have to pay attention, lest we return to a time long thought gone, where police raids of gay bars are de rigueur and we have to lead doublelives—a time where we have to refer to each other as “Friends of Dorothy.” That is why it is imperative Donald Trump be defeated in November. The old cliché may be tired but it is still true—those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. Our history is marked by silence and invisibility. That’s not a place I care to return to.
