Santa Fe Relocation Services does more than just move people around the world. Through their specially-commissioned Global Mobility Survey, they help chart clearly where the next big move is going to happen. And a lot more

ealing with logistical matters, here it is by the numbers: Established in 1980, Santa Fe Relocation Services has grown to more than 3,200 staff in 124 offices in 54 countries. But Santa Fe is a lot more than just statistics. In order to have a better understanding of the market and hence stay at the front of the pack in the highly competitive field of relocation services, the management of the company recognized the importance of market information in the mobility business and decided they would have to do something special. To that end, in 2009 they commissioned the first Global Mobility Survey. This is a large report that covers a particular topic in great detail, pulling
the data from actual companies’ surveys and compiling the results in a thorough manner. It has proven to be a highly valuable resource for both Human Resources people – enabling them to look up data quickly when needed to relocate staff – as well as relocation professionals who are seeking out the trends in where companies are moving their staff to. Back to the numbers: the 2013 Global Mobility Survey was compiled from 1,119 organizations in 56 countries. The report itself is 48 pages long. Here are some of the highlights from the 2013 report.
Key highlights The survey reported a growth in assignments to areas that are considered
‘challenging’ to move to and work in. Some of these areas are the emerging markets and even the BRIC’s countries. Part of the challenge is the amount of paperwork it takes to get things done, as well as the language barrier and lack of infrastructure. That said, the most common overseas posting are still to traditional places of business, with the top three being the US, the UK and Germany. One issue that has been of high concern in all four of the Global Mobility

Surveys is that of mobility costmanagement. The majority of respondents in the most recent report expect to increase focus on cost reduction in relation to their mobility programs in the coming year. Yet, despite the need to better understand assignment costs, most organizations don’t use specialist software to help them track and manage their overseas assignment costs. This, of course, is where a professional company like Santa Fe comes in. They provide a full range of before and after services in addition to the mainstay of relocation. They offer services in areas such as visa and immigration, cross cultural training, mail forwarding, school search, lease cancellation, among much more. We had the chance to speak with Nigel Crockett, Director of Sales and Marketing in Asia for Santa Fe. We asked him specifically about the Global Mobility Survey and why Santa Fe has gone the extra mile to provide this data. biz.hk: Since 2009 Santa Fe has commissioned the Global Mobility Survey. The 2013 report was recently released. What is the idea behind the survey? Crockett: The Survey was commissioned by the Santa Fe Group in order to address a lack of information in the mobility industry. The purpose was to conduct the largest empirical study of organizations and their mobility
programs and to make this information freely available to help companies to benchmark and improve their own mobility programs. The Global Mobility Survey was developed due to the requirement for a definitive global view of mobility programs and trends. Until the arrival of the Global Mobility Survey, research studies had predominantly been US centric, which meant that it was very difficult for companies outside the US to benchmark themselves against their peers.
“Until the arrival of the Global Mobility Survey, research studies had predominantly been US centric, which meant that it was very difficult for companies outside the US to benchmark themselves against their peers.”
Furthermore the sample populations that the results of these other surveys were being drawn from were too small in scientific terms to provide reliable data for companies to make decisions on. biz.hk: The focus of the 2013 report is on companies sending more employees to ‘emerging markets’. What are some of the reasons for this? Crockett: Emerging markets offer an enormous potential for growth. Essentially, the Global Mobility Survey identified that 78 percent of companies that responded said that emerging markets were important to their business plans and subsequently their mobility programs. The reasons for this are purely economic, where companies are searching for future growth they are driven to look outside
2
traditional markets and looking for areas of growth. Mobility programs need to support the objectives of their businesses. The significance of these markets on mobility programmes is also a subject debated by the Expert Panel in the Global Mobility Survey Report. biz.hk: The Survey says that companies find these types of moves and working situations to be challenging. That must be true for the relocation companies doing business as well. What are some of the challenges that Santa Fe faces when making a move for a company into one of these ‘hardship locations’? Crockett: Relocation companies find ‘challenging’ locations just as difficult to operate in as our customers. We face the same challenges in terms of hiring staff, managing operations, and working in often difficult situations. Whilst we have permanent operations in many emerging markets, we also manage short term projects in even more remote locations. Our challenges get repeated on a daily basis, so we know our way around them very well. Things like making sure a transport vehicle meets the strict safety standards of a global oil company, or dealing with last minute schedule changes due to late flight arrivals in a small airfield where an MNC is setting up a mining operation are things we deal with regularly. Expectation setting can be challenging, and we work very closely with assignees, their family, and their corporate HR to ensure expectations are fairly set prior to arrival. No matter what we do, a third tier city in China is never going to look and feel like you’re back home in Arizona! Santa Fe finds itself in the position that through our footprint and the needs of our customers to relocate employees to these locations we have become a leading voice on this subject. In answer to this we have produced a practical guide for corporate HR sending employees to Emerging Markets covering everything that they need to know.

biz.hk: With more companies sending staff to these locations, does that have a trickle down effect to the relocation industry as well, meaning that companies in this sector are also setting up more offices in these areas to provide service to others? Crockett: Opening in these locations is often tricky, due to lack of local expertise and very often you are going in there to set up the infrastructure. For this reason, not all relocation companies are interested in opening in these locations and want to only stick to well-established centers and choose to use us for delivering services in places they cannot reach. But Santa Fe Group has always had offices in these locations. We are often one of, or the first, company to open with staff on the ground. For example, we were the first into Russia in the 1960’s. More recently we have opened
in Mongolia and now into Myanmar. biz.hk: How should people, whether in the relocation industry or not, use the results from the Survey? Crockett: I would suggest that they read the report to get a general overview of things from a global perspective and they will start to have questions such as, how does my company compare to programs from my industry sector, with the same number of assignments per year or even from the same country? They should then visit www.globalmobilitysurvey.com or use our portal to view the answers to these questions. Watching the trends in the survey over the four years that it has been in existence is enlightening in and of itself. The number of respondents increases every year, and a larger
proportion of the respondents are coming from our Asia and emerging market locations. The strength of the report really comes into its own when you realize that it is possible (with the online version) to drill down to minute detail on very specific questions. The printed version is useful, but the online version provides a powerful tool for savvy mobility managers to benchmark against peer companies in a truly personal way. At a recent presentation I gave in Singapore, a sample of this ‘drill down’ data was presented. What became clear from this was that Singapore companies do not approach mobility in the same way as the rest of Asia – their alignment is much closer to European norms than ‘rest of Asia’ norms. Without that drill down ability, this piece of information would have remained illusive.
world. As a result of this, we have built up a portfolio to round out our relocation services to fully support the assignee and the family, helping them settle in quickly wherever they are around the world. Previously, we solely focused only on the assignee. We let the assignee help their family settle into the new destination. However, through our reports and surveys from our offices, there has been a strong demand to put equal emphasis on helping the assignee’s family as much as the assignee themselves. For the last few years, we have been quietly strengthening our international presence to ensure we can exceed our client’s expectations throughout the relocation process. The response from our clients has been overwhelming. Both the account and assignee have praised our communication and family-like approach in delivering our services.

n less than 20 years, UniGroup Relocation has gone from being a US-based ground transport company to becoming the largest owner-managed relocation network in the world. In fact, the framework for UniGroup goes back more than eight decades, when it was part of the two leading ground transport companies in the US, United and Mayflower. After merging these two companies in the States and incorporating UTS International in other parts of the

world, UniGroup Worldwide UTS was formed. Now the company has rebranded itself to form UniGroup Relocation, which the company feels better reflects their mission of providing full service, door-to-door household goods transportation and professional relocation services around the globe with high quality standards in place. They operate in more than 180 countries and have regional offices in Amsterdam and here in Hong Kong, with the headquarters in St Louis, Missouri.
Part of their mission is to remove the stress that commonly accompanies a move. They do this by providing value-added services such as offering a web-based, online tool that acts as a one-stop shop for essential customer information. This can include anything from finding nearby schools to language help. They can also provide customized packages so that people don’t have to pay for things that aren’t needed. the relocation industry, Joseph Lai, General Manager, Hong Kong, of UniGroup Relocation shared his opinion with us. biz.hk: What does the new brand mean and how is it different from the previous one? What are the initial responses? Lai: Our new global brand was created to further enforce our broader mission, which is to offer full relocation services to meet the specific requirements of our various clients around the

biz.hk: What are some of the new services UniGroup Relocation can provide under the new brand? Lai: Under the new brand, we focus on supporting the assignee and their family. This is through providing support from the initial pre-assignment to ongoing and repatriation of the assignee. Support comes through a diverse menu of services such as preview trip/area orientation, home search, school assistance, settling-in services, visa and immigration support, culture and language training, and spousal support. These services can be bundled into a customized package choosing only those that are applicable. The main reason for all of this continued support comes from reports which point to the support of the family as well as the assignee. We believe by providing the assignee with these services, it will speed up the settling-in process, relieving stress throughout the relocation. biz.hk: UniGroup Relocation is now one of the biggest international movers

in the world. It offers destination services in more than 180 countries. UniGroup also has a strong presence in North America, Europe and AsiaPacific. This global network is one of UniGroup’s strengths. Can you share some examples of benefits of this huge network to UniGroup’s customers? Lai: Correct, we are the largest international relocation company. With over 1,100 services centers strategically located around the world, wherever you are moving to, we are already there ready to help. There is no other company that comes close to the coverage that we have. The benefit of having such a large global coverage means that the whole relocation process will take place under a consistent level of service. In addition, we can assure the assignee that we will always have someone in the assignee’s time zone to be in contact with in case they need to reach someone for help. biz.hk: In order to be able to deliver seamless, stress-free and door-todoor services, communication with customers is essential. What are some of the communication tools that UniGroup uses to manage and serve its customers? Lai: We use a wide range of communication tools to manage and serve our
5
customers. We have found that the best way to have a stress-free move is constant communication. That communication is best managed by a certified move manager. Each assignee is assigned a move manager as a point of contact. This person will be in touch with them throughout the entire move, to ensure they receive all the essential information accordingly, as well as to provide constant updates. Secondly, as the Internet is changing the way companies around the world communicate, everything we do is electronic or online. We have a global online communication platform where the move manager, origin office and destination office have access to, and it contains all the data pertaining to the assignee. For example, passport/work visa scans and when they expire, names of the family members and their contact details, and for contractual accounts, mobility policy information on the services that the assignee is allowed. Any parties that need to have access to this information only need a web browser and login and the information will be at their fingertips. In addition to the communication with the move manager, some of our services are available exclusively online
6
such as listings of the new destination’s social and work formalities. biz.hk: What are the resources UniGroup can offer to international relocation clients? Lai: Moving internationally is always stressful. We provide a range of resources to help the assignee assimilate faster to minimize the downtime between home and host country. Services that have the maximum benefit of assistance are: home search, orientation/settling in, immigration, cultural awareness and spousal support. Home Search – Instead of having the assignee run around town and deal with various agents, we’ll do that for them. Tell us what requirements you need, where you work and what lifestyle you want and we can compile a list of areas and home. We’ll do all the remedial work and show the assignee what he or she needs to know to help facilitate a decision. Orientation/Settling In – We can arrange and give the assignee an orientation and share knowledge for living and working in the host country and to address main concerns of any overseas assignment. This helps manage expectations and reduce the
overall duration of the initial transition period during the initial months of arrival to ease the family into the new location. Immigration – We can handle the assignee’s immigration matters and it will save the assignee’s time and cost, as we have filled out the same form over and over again. We know the potential errors during submissions and will ensure that the assignee’s applications are presented as required to the relevant government departments. For example, such attention to details will help enable the assignee to get a renewal of work visa on time. Cultural Awareness – Every new location or country has their own culture, this component of service is designed to assist assignees and their families to understand the new cultural formalities to ensure maximum assimilation. This is especially important at the work place when they are interacting with local staff as well as other expatriate staff in the same office. The ability to understand why helps guide the assignee to integrate easier through the work place. Spousal Support – Studies have shown that the number one reason why assignments fail is family. Ensuring the spouse is assimilating and finding friends and other support groups is vital. We help them by introducing them to appropriate groups, chambers and assist them with any job hunting they request. biz.hk: Hong Kong is an international city. In a UniGroup study published last year, the US is recording a “moving deficit” with more Americans moving to Asia than vice versa. Based on your observations, is this trend still valid in 2013, and in 2014? Lai: This is correct. I suspect the trend will still be on this route throughout 2013 and well into 2014. We have seen an increase of inbound traffic and a decrease of outbound traffic to the US when comparing current year to previous years. This is mainly due to the strong growth that we have seen in China, Singapore and other Asian countries.

School Profile What if we created a school that encouraged discussion and thought, rather than rote memorization? What if we added science, history and technology as vital components, encouraging children to actively participate in these subjects rather than just reading about them? What if we valued diversity and recognized children for their strengths rather than defining them by their weaknesses? Or if we encouraged children to proceed at the pace appropriate for them, encouraging them to think, learn and communicate at their optimal level? With its trademark small class sizes and progressive emphasis on differentiated learning, the arts, and global cultural literacy, The Harbour School has carved its own niche in Hong Kong as the little school with a positive, productive, and enthusiastic environment. Montessori is an internationally recognized education method with a 100-year history of providing a unique and enriching education to children all over the world. Based on the principles of enquiry-based learning and development of the whole child, the Montessori philosophy fulfills the guidelines of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP). School Profile
Curriculum
International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (Y1-Y5) (6-11 years) The IB PYP at VSA is an inquiry-based approach to learning which focuses on the development of the whole child. The bilingual curriculum, with its high expectations particularly in Mathematics, Chinese and English, requires children to think critically and reflectively. Two teachers in each classroom support the students’ learning in English and Putonghua. Students are continually assessed against rigorous standards and encouraged to become balanced and responsible learners. The Learner Profile guides students to develop the attributes which will help them become life-long learners and global citizens. Middle Years Programme (Y6-Y10) (11-15 years) The IB MYP at VSA is a rigorous 5-year curriculum that consists of a comprehensive and thorough study of various disciplines for students aged 10-16. The programme is based upon three fundamental concepts - to develop holistic learning, intercultural awareness and communication. The learning objectives focus on the students’ conceptual understanding, and acquisition of skills, all of which will enhance the application of learning for life. IB Diploma Programme (Y11-Y12) (15-17 years) The IB DP is a 2-year curriculum that provides a balance of academic breadth and depth, and is assessed by rigorous internal coursework and external examination. The basis of the diploma is to promote the holistic development of the student – physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically. Thus, in conjunction with a challenging and comprehensive education in the classroom, the IB DP also encourages individual responsibility to the community and self and supports international awareness that will help prepare the student for University studies and beyond.

Founded in 1932, Yew Chung has been providing quality bilingual education to the learners of Hong Kong for over 80 years. Originally specialising in Early Childhood Education, Yew Chung International School (YCIS) now provides education from early childhood through primary and secondary culminating in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Today YCIS has expanded beyond Hong Kong, and is now established in Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Qingdao in China and Silicon Valley in the United States, with a total student enrolment of over 6,000.
Global Education in YCIS YCIS offers the unique richness and diversity of both Eastern and Western cultures that equip children to be bilingual, global-minded, competitive, appreciative and caring global citizens. Students are nurtured in a multicultural environment with a fully rounded and balanced education which transforms them into global thinking individuals.
Integrating East and West
YCIS combines the best of Eastern and Western cultures by promoting fluency in two major world languages, creating a truly bilingual learning environment, providing courses of study in Eastern and Western philosophy. The integration of Eastern and Western cultures is also achieved through the Co-Principals and Co-Teaching models. Two Co-Principals, one Western and one Chinese, serve as partners in the operations and administration of the school. In addition, two fully-qualified teachers, one Western and one Chinese, together plan lessons and conduct classes in the ECE and Primary School, and provide excellent role models who respect and value one another’s culture.
YCIS Education Programme YCIS’s international curriculum is based on the framework and schemes of work from The National Curriculum for England (NCE). It is a research based curriculum that allows high standards and ease of transition for international students who move from one country to another.
Age of Students Early Childhood Education Primary School (Year 1 – 6) Secondary School (Year 7 – 9) IGCSE (Year 10 – 11) IB Diploma (Year 12 – 13)

YCIS integrates Character Formation programmes into our curriculum, focusing on developing positive qualities and good moral character.
