Dear Members: AmCham Singapore recorded numerous achievements over the past 12 months. We have done so by being focused on our key mission: providing insights to our members, creating more opportunities to network, and advocating to the governments in the region and in the U.S. on their behalf.

These results occurred because of the work and leadership of the entire Board of Governors, the Committee Chairs, the Executive Office staff, and all our dedicated members for their contributions to the Chamber.

Working together, we strengthened our position as the leading foreign business chamber in Singapore and the largest AmCham in Southeast Asia in terms of membership and activities.

By the start of 2011, our overall membership increased from 3,700 to 4,400 members and our corporate membership surpassed 700 members – both all-time highs.

We organized 280 events and committee meetings to match the growth of our membership, providing more networking opportunities and platforms for exchanging business insights.

To engage new industries, we created two new committees – the Legal Committee and the Property Committee.

A total of 3,326 people attended our events last year. Key events include the Welcome Reception for the U.S. Ambassador to Singapore, the East Plays West fundraising concert, the Charity Gala for the Special Olympics, and our annual Corporate Community Day. With increased membership and activities, we increased our team and sought to reach and engage members and the public

in new ways. Last year marked an aggressive foray into social media. We created an AmCham YouTube channel, and increased our presence on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. This increased AmCham’s ability to reach its members, increased the amount of traffic on our website, and garnered more and better brand exposure.

Last year was also a strong year for advocacy. AmCham hosted events for top U.S. government officials such as Timothy Geithner, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, and Kurt Tong, U.S. Senior Official for APEC. At the end of 2010, we organized a business mission to Vietnam, led by the U.S. Ambassador to Singapore David Adelman.

Corporate Community Day, our annual community initiative, was stronger than in previous years. Over 950 volunteers from 34 organizations worked with 5,400 local beneficiaries in 31 separate volunteer events. The Young Professionals series of events raised $5,000 for Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore and the Golf Committee raised $11,000 for Club Rainbow. To top it off, the Charity Gala Dinner raised $53,153 for the Special Olympics, and AmCham itself donated an additional $20,000.

And the first quarter of 2011 was possibly the most active and engaged in AmCham’s history.

We began the year with the U.S.-India Business Forum in February, attended by more than 150 people. This led the way for our mid-March trade mission to India led by U.S. Ambassador to Singapore, David Adelman. The mission included high-profile meetings with government officials, briefings on doing business in India, and networking opportunities.

As a regional chamber, AmCham served a strategic role in facilitating dialogue on how the U.S. can leverage key markets by hosting the U.S.-Asia Pacific Regional Business Summit - this year’s annual meeting of The Asia-Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce (APCAC). The Summit attracted over 250 delegates and created a platform for U.S. companies to tackle business and policy issues in Asia. The stellar line-up of speakers included Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang, the U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, Scot Marciel, the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, Kristie Kenney and along with senior U.S. business officials from across the region.

AmCham Singapore’s hosting of APCAC is a part of the advocacy it conducts for its members. This year marks the convergence of the U.S. Chairmanship of APEC, the focused implementation of the National Export Initiative to increase U.S. exports to Asia, and the negotiations of the Trans Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement which one day could serve as the basis for a free trade area of the Asia Pacific.

AmCham’s plans for the rest of the year include making our hit networking event Young Professionals a monthly event. We aim to strengthen our Corporate Citizenship efforts further by raising even more money for the Spastic Children’s Association.

Other events in the pipeline include a cultural event and a charity gala dinner. In May, as part of the Women’s Network Series, we will organize a lunch with CNN Hero of 2010, social activist Anuradha Koirala. Part of the proceeds will go to Maili Nepal, which protects Nepali women from abuse.

Following this year’s Annual General Meeting, a new leadership team will be taking over AmCham Singapore. After three terms, AmCham Singapore will be electing a new Chairman next week as I will not seek a fourth term. After more than two years of Laura Deal’s transformative leadership, AmCham will have a new Executive Director this year as well.

I have so many people to thank for making the past three years some of the most enjoyable and rewarding of my professional career. Most importantly, I thank Laura for her passion for AmCham, and for the entire Executive Office to always working to enable the members to get as much out of the Chamber as they put into it – and that is a lot.

With the commitment of the Board, the hard work and expertise of the Committee Chairs, and the dedicated and talented staff of the Executive Office, AmCham Singapore will continue to grow and lead the U.S. business community in Singapore and the region in the coming years.

COMMITEES Committees are a platform for members to meet and network with other members from the industry, discuss current industry issues, and share business insights. It is one of the ways the chamber actively engages its members. Each committee is led by its Committee Co-Chairs. It is part of the Chairs responsibility to provide direction by coming up with committee business plans, suggest and liaise with potential speakers, and moderate committee meetings.

The Committee’s purpose is to enhance U.S. aviation and defense business in Singapore by improving government to industry relationships, increasing understanding of U.S. and Singapore aviation and defense priorities and regulations; and increasing the U.S. defense industry’s ability to compete for Singapore business.

The Committee serves as a primary networking tool for the energy sector of Singapore. Along with regularly scheduled internal briefings and networking events, the Committee is also active in tracking legislation, regulations and studies, with regards to policies towards the industry and its relations to the American business community.

The Committee was one of the most active committees this year with a total of nine events; eight meetings of which one was held jointly with the Legal committee and one with the GRAC and two with SCM Committee, two networking nights and hosted one luncheon event with General Gary North, Commander Pacific Air Forcers who spoke of the challenges the U.S Air Force is facing today.

The Entrepreneur committee is one of the most active committees at the AmCham with two planning meetings, nine committee meetings and a position paper on “Financial Institution Loan Access for the SME Sector”.

The Committee enables exchange of information on local and regional financial issues through presentations by speakers and informal networking opportunities. Representatives of major American and international financial institutions also exchange views on issues for potential advocacy to local or regional authorities.

The Hospitality Committee works with local and American companies in Singapore that conduct or support business in the food & business and hospitality industries.

The Committee, through alignment with the AmCham Singapore mission, focuses on delivering: education and information related to hospitality in the Asia Pacific region; business networking and peer group forums; access to industry leaders, government agencies, and other related businesses; relationships with other chambers, committees and organizations for opportunity to network and increase AmCham’s exposure among the business community; and to support and initiate advocacy efforts as related to the hospitality industry in Singapore.

Tracy Waldorf has recently joined Dan Durkin as co-chair of the committee. In 2011, the committee has already held two meetings and hosted one event.

The Committee aims to keep AmCham members abreast of the current trends on Human Capital especially related to Leadership & Talent Management across Asia Pacific with focus on Singapore and provides member input to the Singapore government on various Human Capital issues.

The Marketing & Communications Committee (MCC) serves as a voice of marketing and communications interests of American and other companies in Singapore. The Property Committee is an active forum for sharing best practices and allowing networking opportunities for companies in the Property sector throughout the Asia Pacific region. The Committee represents all sectors of Property through regular Committee meetings that feature a series of speakers, and development of AmCham position papers on relevant advocacy issues.

Newly-created in 2010, the committee has hosted five committee meetings and held two planning meetings.

The Committee held a very successful panel discussion with Priyaranjan Kumar, Regional Director of C&W Capital Markets Richard Stockton, Managing Director and Co-Head of Asia Pacific Real Estate Banking and Chua Tiow Chye, Group Chief Investment Officer (Group CIO), Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd presented on the topic “Investment Trends in Asian Real Estate: Views from Investors, Bankers and Advisors”.
