President’s Message 2021 Salt Lake Home Builders Association

I was young, not sure how old, but age doesn’t matter. My parents had taken our family to see their friend’s new home while being framed. Oh, how it was magnificent! I couldn’t imagine living there yet but dreamt of the day I would. As we walked into the master bathroom, I shouted out, “This is bigger than my bedroom!” As I looked around, I could see my mother and her friend were uncomfortable, but my youth kept me from being too concerned. We finished the tour, enjoyed some time together, and started home. In the car, my parents talked about my comment offering me advice I didn’t understand. They said, Ace, we don’t say things like that to people. I pondered their guidance and asked why? First of all, it was true. Second, we don’t make a point of differences. It was a beautiful home, exciting & inspiring to me. To this day, I am not sure if it was a concern for their friends or for my parents feeling bad we didn’t have the same.

I learned something else that day, an invaluable life lesson. It gives us hope when we can see and dream. With hope, we can achieve what we set our minds to. As a young man, having lived only in apartments and small homes, I didn’t know these homes existed. However, now – I saw myself living in a home-like this one day. It ignited a spark, one that today, I will say, has allowed me to reach for what I visualize. You see, my wife and I have been regular attendees to the Salt Lake Parade of Homes™. These homes are open for the comments I shared that day. They are open for us to dream and achieve! It may not be that we can buy the homes we tour, but we can take an idea, a color, a texture, and add it to our home as we come closer to creating the vision of our aspirations. Most important is the value of abundance. I was in a Parade Home recently, when a designer greeted my wife and I with a smile : “ If you’d like any of the paint, here’s a sheet with all the specific colors!” She is sharing with a pure heart, using her skills, to help others. With our families, we walk through our parade with hopes and aspirations. Talk to our builders who are anxious to help, even if it is to identify a product. Over our seventy-five years, we have filled our world with living examples of the ideas generated by those who see our homes. They are here for you to enjoy, dream, comment, and create.
