Many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can easily be overwhelmed by sensory things such as flashing lights, loud noises, and crowds. To best accommodate individuals with sensory needs, it is ideal to create a space at your event that is quiet and dimly lit where individuals can take time to rest before continuing with the event.

“Quiet spaces (create) a way for them to step away from the excitement and just take a quiet moment, and then regain and rejoin, when they have an opportunity,” Sauer said.

Lara Peyton, vice president of therapy services at Home of the Innocents, which provides community and residential services for medically complex children, said it is also important to have rest areas where people with disabilities can be changed and take any medication they may need in private.

Provide alternatives to food or candy

When hosting an event, or even during trick-or-treating, it is important to offer items that are nonedible for people with food sensitivities. If you see a child with a teal pumpkin, it means they have a food allergy. You can show your inclusivity by setting out a teal pumpkin, which tells families you will provide non-edible goodies.
