Editor's Letter Dear Readers, Various Shades of Grey! and I am not talking about the famous series of books that were a bit controversial, am talking light , medium and dark colors of grey that will be marking the kitchen & Bathroom trends for this season. Industry experts may be seeing grey this year, at least in kitchens and bathrooms. Grey color schemes for both types of spaces have grown dramatically in popularity. Used currently in 55% of kitchens and 56% of bathrooms, grey conveys a sense of chic sophistication. White, off-white, beige, and bone also remain very popular, and sepia tones are on the rise. Transitional-style kitchens and baths—defined as a "seamless blend of traditional and Editor in Chief Lara Mansour Sawaya

another "clear trendsetter" for 2013. Though quartz saw a slight popularity decline in 2012, it is

Additional top trends for kitchens include white-painted cabinetry, glass backsplashes, LED lighting, touch-activated faucets, and satin-nickel finishes. Bathroom trends include an increased use of ceramic/porcelain tiles and undermount sinks. Talking grey and chic finishes reminds me of fashion weeks and their glamour. And to me ISH –Frankfurt is the “trend setting platform for what is fashionable yet with perfect solutions and quality in this industry”. ISH is the world’s leading trade fair dedicated to the Bathroom Experience, Building, Energy, Air-conditioning Technology, and Renewable Energies. I invite you to read on through the magazine to discover what we have compiled from the latest innovations, designs and solutions that were our favorites. Industry news: i Saloni 2013

The 2013 Salone del Mobile looked to exports and closed to great acclaim

The 52nd edition of the Saloni closed on an extremely positive high, with the over 2,500 Italian and foreign exhibitors at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, SaloneSatellite and the biennial Euroluce / International Lighting Exhibition and SaloneUfficio in the global spotlight from 9th to 14th April. The figures: 324,093 visitors overall. 285,698 of them from within the sector, with 160 different countries accounting for 68% of total presences (compared with 63% at the 2011 edition, when the biennial Euroluce and SaloneUfficio were last held), making the Salone not just international but global. There was a major influx of visitors from all over the world: Asian, U.S., South American and

African countries, and strong interest from countries within the Russian area, consolidated by the participation of a significant number of operators encompassing the entire range of goods on offer at the Saloni, particularly pieces with a high design content. A considerable number of delegations of Chinese constructors and American architects were also seen.

“The Salone del Mobile has yet again proved itself to be the most effective promotional tool for creative excellence, a natural coming together of business and design, and an unparalleled platform for our tremendous expertise,” said Cosmit president, Claudio Luti. “There was an extremely positive atmosphere during the Fair, testament to the fact that even during these tough times, innovation,

design and communication are solid investment levers. The exhibiting companies made huge efforts and significant investments in order to present themselves in the best possible light, attracting the attention of international players. The numbers confirm the fact that the Fair is a vehicle that enables its exhibitors to make the most of very real business opportunities with extremely high end operators.”

“Interiors of tomorrow” provided the leitmotif for this edition of the Saloni, with French architect Jean Nouvel’s seminal installation “Project: office for living” at SaloneUfficio, showcasing five unique and singular work scenarios illustrating the fact that a working environment has to be able to transmit creativity, inspiration and enjoyment. “The success of this edition of the Salone del Mobile is an important signal to our companies. However, we absolutely must not let

down our guard as regards the internal market, which is evidencing signs of concern that need to be tackled effectively and very swiftly,” said Roberto Snaidero, president of FederlegnoArredo. Considerable interest was also shown by visiting representatives of official bodies, witnessing at first hand the creativity and effort made by the exhibitors to secure their positions on the sector’s greatest international stage. The Mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, attended the opening, with visits from Giorgio Squinzi, head of Italy’s biggest business lobby, Confindustria, the President of the Lombard Region, Roberto Maroni and the Minister for Economic Development, Corrado Passera over the following days, demonstrating just how great a driver of the Italian economy the Saloni are. Other visitors to the Saloni included Antonio Tajani, Vice President of the European Commission and Lorenzo Ornaghi, Italy's Minister of Culture.

Countertops White marble continues to be the favourite look for countertops, but many homeowners are wary of its upkeep. Look for Quartzite which is a stone that looks like marble but has the durability of granite. The Super White variety which is a grey stone with streaks of dark grey veining is one to look out for! Leathered finishes on granite is a big trend this year. The stone receives a honed finish, making it very forgiving especially when it comes to water spots and scratches.

modern, technological room. The main feature is its customisable nature, which guarantees functional solutions inspired by research into the greatest freedom of composition perfectly integrated with the rest of the house. There are many open units and living room units

so that an open space can be created, inviting conviviality. With LiberaMente you can also design island or peninsula layouts, more complex solutions with great personality, suitable for large areas and dedicated to those who want the kitchen to be the heartbeat of the home.

Other distinctive elements and leitmotiv of the whole design are the absence of handles and the aluminium grooves, which give easy access to compartments and drawers. Clean-cut aesthetics which accentuate the design and the minimalist character of the whole structure.

The refined geometry of the wall units and bases is emphasised by the rich range of finishes: - Larch, Walnut, Oak and Teak decorative. - matt and glossy lacquered, in various colours. - matt, glossy or brushed effect laminate. - Oak veneer, and available in nine different shades which leave the wood grain visible. Five of these shades (Empire Oak, Barred Oak, Cross Oak, Tobacco Oak and Frisè Oak) are called “Versus” and feature an effect of cutting across the grain, with the innovative effect which is both visual and tactile. - gloss or matt glass, available in a wide range of colours. The freedom of colour choice enables personal taste to be satisfied and both urban, eclectic rooms to be created thanks to the use of strong colours, and more traditional rooms featuring lighter tones. The new line also includes tables, seats and stools designed specifically, for a full and flexible design.

Produced by the Mauro Saviola Group, they offer an ideal combination of environmental protection and maximum attention to consumer health. The panels are made of 100% postconsumption FSC certified wood and have the lowest formaldehyde emission values worldwide, even below the limits specified by the extremely severe Japanese F**** standard which defines an emission level of 0.4 mg/l, whilst IDROLEB panels guarantee a level of 0.35 mg/l. reports ISH – The World’s Leading Trade Fair for The Bathroom Experience, Building Services, Energy, Air Conditioning Technology and Renewable Energies – is the world’s biggest exhibition for the combination of water and energy. With everything from sustainable sanitation solutions, innovative bathroom design and energy efficient heating technologies combined with renewable energies to environmentally friendly air-conditioning, cooling and ventilation technology, the world’s leading trade fair covers all aspects of future-oriented building solutions in both horizontal and vertical terms.

issue 25

May - July 2013

ISH confirms its position as leading world trade fair

for the combination of Energy and Water ISH remains more successful than ever – the world's largest industrial exhibition for innovative bathroom design, energy-efficient heating and air-conditioning technology, as well as renewable energies, ended with increases in all key benchmark figures. From 12 to 16 March 2013, 2,434 exhibitors (2011: 2,382) showcased their new products – many of them for the first time in the world – over an area of 258,000 square metres (2011: 255,900). During the five days of the fair, a total of around 190,000 visitors took stock of the innovations of the world's leading manufacturers. The late

onset of winter in far-flung areas of Europe prevented an even greater response. Nevertheless, this year, too, a good third of the visitors came from outside Germany. "The figures are impressive proof of the internationally dominant position of ISH as the leading world trade fair for the combination of water and energy," says Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Messe Frankfurt. "In terms of all the important criteria such as quality of products, exhibitor and visitor numbers, as well as the level of internationality, ISH is the unchallenged number one in its field."

Wolfgang Marzin President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Messe Frankfurt

With its focus on conservation of resources and sustainability, the world's largest trade fair of industrial achievements in the sanitation, heating and air-conditioning sector is at the cutting edge. The 27th ISH show was all about dealing efficiently with the two resources, energy and water. This central concern ran through all the products and trend topics of the two sections relating to energy and water respectively. Under the overall heading ISH Energy, manufacturers exhibited

market-ready and futureproof solutions relating to home and building services technology. With modern, efficient air-conditioning, heating and ventilation products, up to 50 percent of the energy used in a house can be saved. Investments in new technologies thus not only make an important contribution to the new energy paradigm, but also soon pay for themselves. The section entitled 'ISH Water' demonstrated that design and solutions relevant to all generations are not mutually exclusive. The bathroom is increasingly gaining importance for users in terms of the contribution it makes to the overall comfort and convenience of the home. At the same time, because of the demographic changes, demand is growing for bathrooms to be usable across several generations. The exhibitors showcased numerous ways in which these demands on bathrooms can best be met with integrated solutions.

The visitor structure also reflected ISH's profile as the world's leading trade fair for the combination of energy and water. With some 35 percent of all visitors, the installation trades represented the largest group amongst the attendees, as they had done in previous years. Equally high is the share of visitors from outside Germany. A definite plus was to be recorded in many of the growth markets in particular. These included Eastern Europe, North Africa, South East Asia, the Middle East and China. Equally good was the assessment of the quality of

this year's ISH by exhibitors and visitors alike. German exhibitors, in particular, expressed positive attitudes in Messe Frankfurt's survey relating to the current economic climate in the sector. 94 percent of those polled rated this as good or satisfactory. Positive too, were the ratings of the extent to which they had achieved the targets they had set themselves for the show (85 percent) and the extent to which they had managed to reach their target groups (76 percent). That represents an increase of two and three percent respectively over the previous event. Assessments by exhibitors from outside Germany of the degree to

which they had achieved their trade-fair targets were also good (81 percent), as was their overall rating (79 percent). Absolute top marks came from the visitors. The average rating for the product range was 97 percent – once again three percent higher than in 2011. Visitors from outside Germany showed themselves to be particularly pleased with the degree to which they had achieved their goals for their visit to the show. The overall rating remained at a constant high level of 96 percent. The associations who sponsored ISH also record a positive overall outcome:

ISH 2013 REPORTS: Villeroy & Boch

VILLEROY & BOCH Aveo new generation

A sensuous and modern design statement for the bathroom The archetype of life interpreted in ceramics, the egg symbolising the emergence of all life, as a protective case and a safe space, as inspiration for a bathroom collection. Is this possible? Villeroy & Boch answers this question with a decided "Yes!". Indeed it was 2003 when the international designers Conran & Partners used this vision to create the unmistakeable form of the Aveo collection exclusively for the brand manufacturer. "There is nothing that people have created that can't be improved" – this was Sebastian Conran's comment as he today presented Villeroy & Boch with the contemporary de-velopment of the successful collection: Aveo new generation. The oval is retained as the determining form for the bathroom collection, a symbol of peace and relaxation. With contoured and delicate washbasins that create a feeling of freshness and lightness, and a completely new furniture collection in a minimalist natural look, Aveo new generation transforms the bathroom into a true oasis of well-being.

Ceramics with an ethereal look and modern contours An ethereal look and modern contours have been developed for the new washbasins.

50

issue 25

May - July 2013

Despite its reduced height the basin continues to offer a generous depth and great func-tionality. There is a choice between a 60cm surfacemounted washbasin and a wallmounted washbasin in 70cm and 50cm that can also be combined with the furniture. All washbasins are available with and without overflows. The new optional outlet valves with ceramic covers contribute towards the flawlessly consistent design. The original design of the WC and bidet has been retained.

However, the WC seat has been given a facelift and is now thinner and more contoured. Extreme comfort of use is offered by the Soft Closing and Quick Release functions. There is a choice of three WC versions and two bidets.

Furniture with a reduced natural design New furniture with curved fronts that draw inspiration from the shape of the washbasins completes the collection. The furniture picks up on the oval design language

of the washbasin and elaborates it in two directions: the fronts are formed both horizon-tally and vertically, with no handles to detract from the harmonious curve. Easy opening and closing of the pull-out compartments is nonetheless provided by lateral recesses, which along with the doors and countertop are formally integrated in the design. The shape of the lights in the new lighted mirror is also reminiscent of the shape of the fronts, and as a further highlight the colour of the LED lights can be altered using a sensor.

The furniture interiors offer intelligently divided storage space for those everyday things, ensuring a clear sense of order. The high-quality real wood finish is available in the colours Pure Oak and Dark Oak, and emphasises the naturalness of the overall look. A contrasting modern aesthetic is created by the Glossy White Lack finish. Despite its completely independent design the furniture can also be very well combined with selected washbasins from the My Nature and Loop & Friends collections.

The furniture range from Aveo new generation comprises vanity units in 60cm, 100cm and 130cm, as well as a 130cm chest of drawers. There is also a matching LED lighted mirror in 60cm, 100cm and 130cm. A tall cabinet completes the range. Very delicately worked feet are also available as additions for the furniture.

High-quality rimless Quaryl bathtub The new rimless Quaryl bathtub completes the

harmonious and natural aesthetic. The previous model remains in the range, both as a built-in tub and equipped with a whirl-pool system. And now there is also a new freestanding tub, its harmonious, consistent look enhanced by its rimless design. Coordinating tap fittings for washbasin and tub are found in the L’Aura series, which harmoniously combines naturalness with a modern design language – clear and functional for a fresh well-being experience.

your bathroom, a space where they have found inspiration to create their own custom bathrooms. “The products we are presenting are heirs to our approach to innovation at all levels: design, comfort, functionality, environmental protection, use of technology, which is still entirely applicable to the present time”, explained Carlos Velázquez, Roca Corporate Marketing Director. “Current trends in bathroom design fit the concepts that Roca anticipated several decades ago, like the introduction of water saving

systems with its reductions in toilet tank volumes in the 1960s, or the creation of the Roca Design Center, which is focused on the analysis and detection of the consumer’s new needs”, added Velázquez. Among the Novelties of 2013, you can find the new rimless toilets of The Gap collection in both floor-standing and wall-hung versions, as well as the innovative In-Tank, the first toilet in the world integrating the tank inside the bowl – using an adjustable flushing mechanism intended to save water - with which Roca once again redefines the

bathroom space. This solution incorporates the brand’s latest technology in water conservation and comfort, combining practicality, installability, design and respect for the environment. In the Faucets category, Roca presents new taps such as the L20, a new intuitive collection with simple and modern lines capable of adapting to any space. In line with one of Roca’s guiding principles, sustainability, the L20 collection with the Cold Start frontal opening for cold water, which prevents the boiler from turning on when it is not needed, minimises water and energy consumption thanks to innovative technology. The electric version, the L20-E, is designed to satisfy the needs of public spaces.

The products we are presenting are heirs to our approach to innovation at all levels: design, comfort, functionality, environmental protection, use of technology, which is still entirely applicable to the present time Carlos VelĂĄzquez Roca Corporate Marketing Director

Furthermore, the new collection of taps, Open, exemplifies a passion for design and innovation for the benefit of well-being. Their raining waterfall effect ensures maximum comfort and minimises consumption. Other product categories displayed at the fair included Shower Solutions: the new custom options including the new Puzzle collection, which helps to create personalised, modern shower spaces with various shower heads, jets

and shower mixers (with 3, 4 and 5 outlets and 8 combinable elements) that adapt to the needs of users with the highest standards and provide them with all the hydromassage benefits that come with such features. With regard to shower trays, Roca presents novelties in all materials. Inacrylic, the Neo-Daiquiri range of shower trays offers a greater variety of sizes covering all possible options. In addition to its wide range, the design

has also been refined to suit current market trends, now being lower in height and longer. In vitreous china,Roca presents Easy shower trays with a wider range, while, on the other hand, Roca also presents new shower spaces by using new ceramic tiles combined with the In-drain system, which lets you hide the drain since the installation is hidden by the ceramic tiles, with a resulting built-in shower tray that is perfectly integrated into the bathroom.

ISH 2013 REPORTS: Roca Another option for the shower area in terms of new materials is Stonex, Roca’s new gelcoat base material, used in the tailor-made cuttable solution Terran, which creates a warm environment thanks to its textures and range of colours. Terran shower trays provide textured finishes with marked non-slip properties. They are extra slim and available in a wide range of sizes, including large-scale. Roca is also launching a new solid surface technical material called Graphyd for the new line Glace, our top of the range shower trays that offer unbeatable features in both design and comfort, thanks to the non-slip properties of the material and the 2-cover options for the drain. Finally, customers can choose the steel integrated look provided by In-Floor, a shower tray made of 3.5mm thick vitrified steel, extra flat (25mm) with matching drain and anti-slip surface, ensuring perfect integration within the shower space. Roca also presents the new collection of Cosmo screens, a

tailor-made collection without internal profile that conveys transparency, spaciousness and elegance. The Cosmo design is minimalist with hardly any profiles, 6mm safety tempered glass and a refined and distinctive handle. In Browse your bathroom,

visitors could also see the effects of the Tiles that best suit their ideal bathroom, with samples on display from tile collections such as Calypso, Fresh biano and Green. In the Bathroom Solutions section, the Luna Mirror Cabinet stands out as it can be effectively combined with the Victoria Basic, Victoria-N and Debba collections. The mirror has 6 finishes, 5 sizes and 5 pieces, offering an infinite possibility of combinations. From the Bathroom collections, the Debba, a compact furniture bath collection, is a particular favourite, offering maximum storage space while combining the latest trends in design with space optimisation. In addition to this furniture collection, Roca presents Prisma: a wide range of washbasins, furniture, structures and accessories designed for both public and private spaces. ISH 2013 REPORTS: Laufen

Laufen

Kartell Collection The "Kartell by Laufen" bathroom collection is not just a feast for the senses: a number of technical innovations make their bathroom debut here. The most spectacular innovation has to be the revolutionary Saphirkeramik, which is used here for the first time in almost all the washbasins. However, the drain outlets that grace the washbasins are also new and impressive. What's more, they can be combined with an equally newly developed hidden outlet and overflow. All in all, with this set Laufen has created a genuine masterpiece, both in looks and in terms of technical excellence. The "Kartell by Laufen" bathroom collection sees the combination of two materials that could hardly be more

different. The Italian company Kartell uses plastic, one of the youngest materials in human history, to create high quality furniture and designer objects. The Swiss bathroom specialist Laufen is an expert in ceramics, which is one of the oldest materials used by man, and handles it in various formulations in a way that very few other companies can emulate. While Laufen has always created its designer bathroom concepts using traditional ceramics, in the form of vitreous china and fine fireclay, "Kartell by Laufen" is the first time the revolutionary Saphirkeramik has been used, following years of research and development work by the Swiss manufacturer to get it ready for launching onto the market.

60

issue 25

May - July 2013

Delicate design language thanks to Saphirkeramik In the new bathroom collections, these two materials - plastic and ceramics - come together, as in Saphirkeramik Laufen has been able to bring a delicate design language to the washbasin. With an edge radius of 1-2 mm and a flanging radius of 2 mm, it hardly resembles conventional plastic design language. The secret lies in the formulation, which gives the ceramic an exceptional hardness and bending strength - similar to that of steel - through the addition of the mineral corundum. Naturally it still retains all the advantages of classic sanitary ware: along with absolute hygiene, these include the insensitivity of the

material to caustic cleaners and mechanical abrasion, a long lifespan and total safety when it comes to handling drinking water. New outlets and overflows throughout the range Another innovation that is seen for the first time in the "Kartell by Laufen" range applies to the linear drain outlets that extend across the entire width of the washbasin. They give the design a whole new look. To coordinate with this, Laufen has developed a new, hidden outlet that can

be combined with an equally hidden overflow function. While the hidden outlet is always open in conventional washbasins, the new solution from Laufen allows the water to accumulate by means of a pop-up without running any risk of overflow. The outlets on the shower trays and the overflows on the bathtubs in this range follow the same design. The overflows on the bathtubs are equipped with atmospheric LED lighting. In the configuration with air massage, the overflows are also equipped with aromatised mist.

ISH 2013 REPORTS: Ideal Standard

what really goes on in the bathroom

Softmood

May - July 2013

Ideal Standard reveals findings of spy-in-the bathroom study For most people it’s a sanctuary from which even partners and family members are excluded. And yet, for two weeks in February, nineteen people in four countries agreed to let Ideal Standard, Europe’s leading bathroom specialist, track their every brush, splash and flush in the name of research.

In a first for bathroom research, prototype motion mapping technology was installed in bathrooms across Europe to monitor bathroom behaviours. By adapting depth sensors to provide accurate 3D tracking of the human body and using two sensors in each bathroom, Ideal Standard has been able to build a detailed picture of how people actually use their bathroom space. It’s a tale of neglected baths and bidets, conflicting bathroom etiquette and

maddening, illogically arranged bathroom suites. The findings, supplemented with quantitative data gathered from 4000 people, will be revealed today at ISH 2013 in Frankfurt. Behind the data lie some fascinating glimpses into family life: the parents who seek refuge from their families with long baths and showers; the bathrooms that double up as laundries and dressing rooms; the flatmates forced to do their ablutions in unison.

According to the findings, 40% of us crave a new bathroom, but interestingly, for the most part, it’s not a bigger space that we lust after; just a space that better meets our needs. “We started with a hypothesis that in many homes the bathroom is not used as well as it could be,” said Kerris Bright, Chief Marketing Officer of Ideal Standard International.

Bathrooms motion mapping study for couples

“The findings seem to confirm what we suspected. Renovating a bathroom often starts with excitement and ends in disappointment. It’s

hard to know where to start and harder to see past the limitations of the room.” The publication of the study coincides with the launch of Ideal Standard’s new marketing campaign; A Beautiful Use of Space. The campaign features a series of abstract bathroom spaces – a far cry from the usual imagery of scented candles and infinity baths looking out onto lush forests – to capture the different needs a bathroom meets in a day; invigoration, transformation, relaxation and play.

ISH 2013 REPORTS: Ideal Standard

Families from Germany, France, Italy and the UK participated in the study, representing a variety of households, from single occupancy to multigenerational homes. From Rotherham to Wuppertal; from Milan to Paris, the families agreed to let their every movement in the bathroom be captured, analysed and scrutinised by Ideal Standard researchers. The results of the quantitative and qualitative studies will be analysed over the coming months but already some fascinating insights are emerging which will help Ideal Standard and its design teams innovate for the future.

“We conducted the study because, uniquely, our product range spans every aspect of bathroom design,” said Kerris Bright. “We’ve always tried to understand how a bathroom works in totality and to think about the ergonomics of the bathroom to help our customers get the most out of their bathroom experience.” The findings are published today in a paper entitled Bathroom Behaviours; how to optimise bathroom space for modern households. “The bathroom is a unique space in the home,” said Dr John Curran, social anthropologist and author of the paper. “It stands out from other rooms in the home

because it has to meet an array of needs. “It’s a room that transforms us from one state of mind to another and can therefore mark different personas we have throughout the day. These transformational characteristics mean that the bathroom is embedded in everyday rituals – rituals that help define who we are. “However, the design of bathrooms – the storage, fittings, aesthetic and the variation in size – means that meeting all the needs of household members becomes a challenge, all the more so in light of rapid demographic change which is seeing a rise in single person, all adult and

multi-generational households and households with older people.” For each of the bathrooms in the motion mapping study Ideal Standard has set about creating a ‘profile bathroom’ based on insights gathered. Each profile bathroom can be considered a useful starting point when designing bathrooms for different needs. The profile bathrooms have been developed by Robin Levien, an award winning designer. Robin used Ideal Standard’s full product offering – the core Connect range, the elegance of Softmood, the minimalism of Strada and an extended range of water and energy efficient showers and fittings – to create spaces which meet the needs of the different types of household in the study.

“It was important to have a multifunctional approach to the products we recommended in each of the bathrooms,” said Robin. “Based on the household make up, coupled with their individual preferences, we selected a range of Ideal Standard products to offer a complete solution. To borrow from Le Corbusier’s famous quote ‘a bathroom is a machine for living in’ so we made them more liveable.”

keramag expansion of the

citterio bathroom series At the ISH 2013, Keramag presented an expansion of the “citterio” bathroom series, which was introduced last year under the new premium umbrella brand of “Keramag Design”. In addition to the previous wood structure “oak grey-brown” with black glass panels, the bathroom furniture is now available in the design “oak nature beige” with matching glass fronts in “taupe”. According to the

manufacturer, this creates a much wider and diverse range to fulfil individual preferences of taste. The versatile furniture range includes wash basin vanity units, which can be combined with one another, in six widths of 450 to 1,350 mm. They have glass fronts in “black” or “taupe”, which are surrounded by a champagne-coloured metal frame with integrated

handle. The range also includes asymmetrical wash basin vanity units in sizes of 1,200 and 1,350 mm, which offer additional storage space of cosmetics and decorative items and create further storage in the form of a side element with both a standard and an internal drawer. The bathroom furniture range is being complemented by a 1,600 mm tall cabinet, a shelf with mirror at the same

height and a 600 mm high illuminated mirror element in three widths. The frames of the mirror with LED lighting pick up on the wood structure of the cabinets and round off the wash basin unit in its appearance.

The furniture range of the designer “citterio” bathroom series has re-cently been expanded to include new furniture colours for the bodies and glass elements. As well as the “oak greybrown tranché” with black glass panels, the cabinet elements and illuminated mirrors are now also available with a “natural beige” body. The cabinets are equipped with taupe fronts and cover panels in this colour version.

The successful designer “citterio” bathroom series (Design Antonio Citterio with Sergio Brioschi) was presented in 2012 as the first product innovation under the new premium “Keramag Design” brand. Italian design meets German quality: “citterio” combines a timelessly modern design vocabulary and highquality materials with quality and functionality at its highest level.

The impressive style element of the wash basins is the combination of symmetrical and asymmetrical versions with clear geometric external shapes for an exact combination with the furniture. The interior basins of the asymmetrical wash basins and top frame wash basins are de-fined by an organic design vocabulary, which also dictates the design of the WCs and bidets. Ceramic, seat and lid of the WCs create a successful, harmonious unit. The integrated WC seat emphasises the natural shape. The convenient projection is 560 mm. The bidets, which are also organically shaped, round off the ceramic product range.

The complete bathroom series, which was designed by renowned architect and designer Antonio Citterio, is impressive with its timelessly modern, chic design vocabulary, highquality materials and the fulfilment of the highest demands on ambiance and function. Keramag summarises the symbiosis as follows, “Italian design meets German quality”. To round off the look, the manufacturer recommends the matching bathtubs and shower trays from the “Preciosa” series, the Koralle shower partition “S550 by Antonio Citterio” and the “Axor Citterio M” fittings.

Irrespective of whether it is implemented in the smallest of bathrooms or a sprawling master bathroom – the add-on system combines a selection of washstands with

floor-standing or wall-mounted furniture, not to mention mirrors, lights, tall cabinets and various accessories. A˘system addit provides a range of 24 washstand options, manufactured from glazed steel. This material is characteristic for Alape, with its precision enabling the exactly shaped washstands to be coordinated with the furniture modules' modular dimension. A˘system addit furniture modules are available in five heights (150, 300, 450, 600, 750 mm), four widths (450, 600, 800, 1000 mm) and two depths (375, 450 mm). In the heights 300, 600 and 750 mm, there are also floor-standing designs that can also be used to configure sideboards or bench seats.

Besides the modular variety of its combinatory, A˘system addit stands apart thanks to the puristic, reduced expression of form that is typical for Alape. For example, recessed drawers enhance the modern design. The high demands placed on functionality can be recognised in all details, such as the pushto-open mechanism that is independent of the centre of pressure for opening and closing the drawers. Moreover, there are integrated sockets and insertable trays. The precise finishing and the quality of materials and surfaces made from wood effect laminate, genuine wood veneer and glazed steel also underline the premium credentials of the entire product programme.

ISH 2013 REPORTS: Duravit

Refreshing new nuances

duravit

ADD THE FINISHING TOUCH TO THE STARCK 2 REDESIGN Organic forms currently lead the way in interior design. Philippe Starck, one of today’s most gifted designers, recognised the appeal of natural flowing forms as many as 15 years ago. As early as 1998, Duravit presented Starck 2, a ceramic series inspired by the movement of water. Duravit has revamped the series to give it a new, more modern look, thus completing the successful redesign of the toilets and bidets.

72

issue 25

May - July 2013

However, Duravit has retained the fundamental design DNA of the successful series. The washbasins are still comfortably large with a convenient depth. One refreshing, exciting nuance in particular is simply ingenious: at first glance, the washing bowl appears circular but, on closer inspection, is revealed to be slightly oval. A tiny deviation from perfect symmetry that highlights the organic nature of the series.

Seen as a whole, the new features are a textbook example of how even small design nuances can have a significant impact. As a once more elegant ceramic range in the medium price category, Starck 2 is thus taking its rightful place amongst the equally successful Starck 1 and Starck 3 ranges. Duravit thus offers timelessly modern design from a single source that is the work of just one designer: Philippe Starck for every lifestyle and every budget.

The conical widening towards the wall has been retained as a typical feature of the washbasin with wall connection. It still features the successful, practical shelf area. In the new model, the base of the bowl is flat and sweeps vertically upwards through gently rounded corners. Duravit completes the revision of Starck 2 with a new rectangular bathtub and new shower trays. The acrylic bathtub features one outstanding detail, the integrated neckrest. Inspired by archaic models, this element is typical of Philippe Starck. The neckrest forms a harmonious part of the

overall design and resembles a board inset into the bathtub, enabling the user to lie back in comfort. The series’ design principle has also been carried over to the shower trays, where it goes by the name of Starck Slimline. A characteristic design feature is the flat installation height enabling the rim to be reduced to just 20mm. The all-round rim is the ideal width for encompassing all standard shower enclosures. In addition to rectangular variants, quadrant-shaped shower trays are also available that comply with both national and international building standards.

presents a new series of fittings at the ISH 2013 Function and hygiene attuned to the user Flexible solutions that combine high quality in design and manufacture with technical innovation and are, into the bargain, available from one source, are even more frequently requested by the planners and investors. Schell, full-service supplier of fittings for the public, semi-public and commercial sanitary room, presents the many versions of the Vitus series of fittings at the ISH 2013 and, thus, for the first time, offers fittings in the wall-mounted segment. Vitus is based on a completely new concept of development: From only two basic bodies, the fitting specialists have derived numerous manual and electronic designs for showers and washrooms, suitable for every specific application and location, including the medical sector. Whether related to function, hygiene, design, saving water and energy, user friendliness or solving problems – Vitus optimally fulfils the objectrelated demands and unifies all market requirements. minimum gaps permit very easy cleaning, and guarantee an appealing appearance for many years also with heavy use. Already before introducing to the market, the new product range has been awarded the coveted technology prize "Plus X Award 2012". Schell was awarded this in three categories:

"Innovation", "High Quality" and "Functionality".

Just as economic as it is hygienic Two excellent features are the reasons for the added value of the series: Vitus prevents the risk of infection and provides the greatest

possible safety in operation. Both is ensured by Schell through highly-developed technical components, as well as ergonomic, easy to use operating elements. Actuation is carried out either by a single-lever mixer, lineararm lever mixer, 90° open/ closed rotary switch, hydraulic self-closing cartridges,

pressure-sensitive CVDTouch Electronics and, in the future, also by infrared sensors. Outlets, also that can be swivelled, are available in different designs and lengths of outlets of 135, 210 and 270 millimetres. Particular significance has been attributed to the excellent adherence to the hygiene of the drinking water: Individual stagnation intervals of the new CVD-Touch Electronics reduce the risk of germs in the drinking water. Furthermore, there is the option for thermal disinfection for all versions. Thermostats or faucets with temperature stop prevent the risk of scalding. In every case, temperature control of the Vitus shower and wallmounted fittings is carried out gently and precisely. The materials used already conform to all requirements of the revised Drinking Water Directive, which is applicable as from December 2013. Particularly in sensitive

sanitary areas such as clinics and care facilities, Vitus ensures optimum hygiene of drinking water and utilization.

Vitus is assured of a good future Approximately 80 years of experience was invested in the development of the new series of fittings from the manufacturer in Olpe. Functions can be subsequently changed or, for example, the flushing valve can be retrofitted for thermal disinfection. ISH 2013 REPORTS: Christian Sieger - Duravit Christian, we are now at the Duravit stand. Tell our readers more about the designs you have collaborated on. I believe 2013 is quite a special year for us because we have two big lines that we are presenting here at ISH. Both of them have their special characteristics. Happy D2, as the name states is the complete rejuvenated program that we launched in 1989. For the first time, we are really being one of the archetypes of ceramic lines. The challenge is to expand the life cycle of a product. We have spent quite a lot of time preserving the DNA of this line making it lighter and more elegant as we have noticed that these are the market demands. Therefore, we preserved the archetype shape in a new way with a new look. How challenging is it to design a luxury finish while producing with materials that are more democratic?

DESIGNER FOR DURAVIT'S HAPPY D2 78

issue 25

May - July 2013

It is our challenge to make the world more beautiful to a wider audience. This is what we always try to achieve by using modern technology, modern manufacturing processes and at the same time creating something that looks special. A company such as Duravit has a great advantage when it comes to creating such products because of all the resources available to them and the ability to recognize products and break down final costs to a level in order to make them more affordable on a wider scale. Ten years ago, communicating about bathrooms was a taboo! Today, things have changed. Tell us more about this. Wellbeing and health has created a huge motivation. You start your day in the bathroom and end it there as well before you retire to bed. There is so much more to taking a hot bath or shower – it is quite healing. People have started to recognize that fact and so they

Happy D2

Happy D2

decorate their bathroom in order to make it more beautiful and tranquil. It is where you calm yourself! What elements or pillars are always present when you are designing something new? When it comes to a ceramic line – it is functionality and sustainability. Obviously, the functionality of a leather

accessory is not as important as a ceramic line where once installed it has to last for a good ten to fifteen years! When it comes to sustainability, it is also obvious that your wash basin etc are not scarves where you can change them every season – you need to enjoy it for the next ten years hence we as designers need to think about that. Those two are probably the most important pillars! What is your favorite design so far? It is something very different, out of this market - a bed for elderly people! There is a saying in this industry that the Germans have durability and quality where as the Italians have creativity and the Asians, well, they copy every one! What is your take on this?

When it comes to Asia, I would like to say that the Japanese have very high understanding of things and they are really precise. They truly do inspire the market and are always ahead and qualified on new levels! The Italians always have creativity. They are always impressive but at the end of the day it is really about translating that creativity into a product that is successful and reliable! I am very impressed by the Germans, especially when it comes to Duravit because the people that work here all have the same spirit and passion for what they are doing. The products that are created are very unique which gives people faith when turning to Duravit products! Can you give our readers a

message on what to look for in their own bathrooms? Edge readers should tell the architect to make the room bigger. That is the first thing they should do! It is something which I generally think is important. Also, try to incorporate more natural materials. We are trying to copy nature which is quite the challenge and so you should always try to bring nature into your bathroom. Put in flowers and plants. The bathroom is not just a functional room anymore – try to enjoy it more. What good is it to have a beautiful bathroom if you are just going to brush your teeth in it? It is a relaxation area and should be used for such!

UNICERA 2013 REPORTS Vitra

VITRA 2013 bathroom COLLECTION Simple, Functional and Accessible Designs

Pillet Feelings were the driving force behind the design of VitrA’s new Pillet series. This series by French designer Christophe Pillet is characterized by simplicity and functionality. The experience Pillet brings to the room awakens the senses. The infinite technology used in the series creates the precise and subtle lines that the new architectural styles demand. The refined edges of the cast mineral and ceramic sinks are the perfect complement to the gray and walnut bathroom furniture. Specially manufactured thin wooden panels complement the sink cabinets with aesthetic accents while drawers provide space for small personal effects. Vanity sinks organize the bathroom and make life easier with generous storage space divided into compartments. Pillet adds flair to the room with plain and sliding mirrors that reflect his stylish approach, all accented with LED lighting, which makes it very accessible. The mirror’s bottom shelf creates space for items that need to be within reach. The delicate silhouette of the sink faucets rounds out the Pillet series; they are available with single and double control levers. In addition to the double-lever bathroom sink faucet, the series also

84

has embedded bathroom sinks and faucets as well as bathtub faucets. Not only do the showerheads include innovative elements such as LED lighting and waterfall flow from the overhead shower, but they are also easy to install. The upright cabinet complements the functionality of the series and provides solutions for different storage needs. The upright cabinets come in pantry or glass display models, and the door has compartments for storing

small items. The pantry model pulls open to allow for easy access. The enclosed spaces beside the upright cabinet are perfect for storing large products. The ergonomic bathtub made from cast mineral has a distinct look featuring sharp lines. Perfect for those who prefer simplicity and bold lines in the bathroom, the bathtub brings a feeling of warmth to the bathroom with wooden panels that match the furniture.

Infinite The possibilities of infinite technology are totally changing the appearance of sinks. Curvy turns are disappearing, lines are becoming more defined and edges are thinner. The infinite material makes cleaning, maintenance and repairs simple and easy. Bathroom sinks are whitened with a special process so that they stay as white and shiny as they were when they were brand new. With the color diversity made possible

by the new materials, it is appealing to those who want to follow current trends in the bathroom and achieve a unique look. Not only does it give users a warm and delightful tactile experience, but it also offers various sizes. The 80-centimeter bowl sinks put an end to the problem of splashing water, but there are also 40-centimeter sinks for more confined spaces. Elimination of the water overflow hole gives the bathroom an integrated, hygienic look.

NOA has won a number of important design awards due to its innovative perspective and considers it important to include product development methods, marketing and technology research in the design process. NOA products are not only simple design solutions but they are also the answer to new questions about the needs of modern marketing and manufacturing technologies.

Metropole Consisting primarily of ceramic products, the Metropole series offers hygiene and comfort with a system that combines warm and cold water and custom toilets with a washing reservoir. The monoblock sinks in the series also offer the visual simplicity that architects demand. Their sculpture-like appearance dictates the atmosphere and architectural style of the room. The suspended toilets in the series offer design elegance with invisible installation while a surface without recesses makes cleaning a breeze. The slow-close toilet lid is child-safe and quiet. The detergent mounted on the toilet reservoir and mixed with

the washing water provides maximum hygiene and cleanliness. The Metropole series offers a range of products for different needs, allowing for compact and asymmetrical applications, different sizes, and sinks that have fittings with and without strips. The ceramic drain cover option hides the cold appearance of the metal filter in the sink and maintains the integrity of the design. The invisible water overflow channel ensures safe use while hiding the untidy look of the water overflow hole in the sink. Bathroom sinks that offer an aesthetic appearance without the need for a base make life easier for the disabled as they facilitate the approach of a wheelchair.

Lighting Plan a combination of practical and pretty when it comes to bathroom lighting. Great sconces flanking your mirror provide good lighting for the face. Add some pot lights to the ceiling and then a statement chandelier or flush mount if the room permits. If you’re tired of sconces and want more of a unique look, vintage lighting and pendants are on trend. You can suspend these over the countertops for a more eclectic look that is a little unusual and unexpected. Brass and gold are huge this year!

Flooring When it comes to eco-friendly design, the bathroom is far ahead of other rooms in terms of options available. This year sees a surge of under floor heating not only for your comfort but for cutting down the heating bill.

Accessories Although white ceramic soap dishes and glass bud vases will always have their place in the bathroom, this year, the fabrics are all about colour and pattern. The biggest trends are bold patterned fabrics and hand-blocked Indian or Moroccan prints. If you’re wary of bold patterns, introduce it with a shower curtain, but keep your towels and rugs solid in a similar colour way to tie the room together.

bongio SPAZIO VIVO

design by arch. Federico Rossi SPAZIO VIVO is the reflection on the emotions, at the origin of Bongio’s concept, did in cooperation with our designer Federico Rossi: ‘ I thought to a spacious habitat, with just few precious items. Wellness, but even aesthetical pleasure and, mainly, great character for each single element. I wish a space able to teach me its own history, to solicit my imagination for a LISTENING IN THE MAKING, a space where having renewed actions, thinking .......created to be a real DISTRIBUTOR OF EMOTIONS.’

Research, Culture and experimental design propose themselves as motivation for a widespread sensation that feels the relax, the wellness, the time to dedicate to our own body and to our own mind as true luxury, in an ambience where all our senses are solicited. A deeply scenic construction that talks about a new way of pleasure for Bongio. Main characteristic of SPAZIO VIVO is the aesthetical research mixed with functionality, versatility of the objects and to the applied technology.

Bongio was founded in 1936, it is synonym of elegance and design of the product that believes into the Made in Italy, into the craftsmanship, into the quality of the materials and in its historical training and experience, but with the attention even to the future of great changing. ‘Volumes sculpted into the material, intersects bold geometric grid, to shape an essential space’. This is the focus of SWEET In.GRID, DOUBLE RAIL, OPEN BOX AND PURE GLAM. The implementation of a concept implies the knowledge

of its history and its cultural background, through analysis and development. And yet, in time, it also involves the ability of offering a different image and a new setting. Which means , when required, to possess the skill to CUSTOMISE THE PRODUCT, and to reintroduce the kernel of the matter in hand, the space, by making good use of modern technologies and materials. In this way some refined and spectacular fittings and furnishings are created, whose design and prime materials fully convey what, for Bongio, luxury stands for.

PURE GLAM PURE & STRAIGHT LINES for the new collection of threeholes and single lever mixers, produced using brass bar and with application of 10 x 10 mms. Swarovsky Elements. Elegance and preciousness are the main characteristics of the series that has the same design of the grids of the sitting. Ecosustainabiliy has been applied even to this ‘luxury’ product, not only for the saving of water but even for the commitment of the Company in the project I LOVE WATER in Africa. The triple functions shower column has made in stainless steel and it represents the aesthetical conjunction between PURE GLAM and DOUBLE RAIL, where the ‘rails’ of lights became the ‘rails’ of the water . The reducer of flow to save water, is included in each items and in the shower column too. Furthermore the shower column and the single lever mixers use a progressive cartridge that grants to save energy even on the boiler. Pure Glam is available in the following finitures: CHROME - BRUSHED NIKEL - 24 KT. GOLD - 24 KT . BRUSHED GOLD - MAT BLACK.

May - July 2013

Hans: As Vice President of Delta Faucet Company international I am responsible for the global expansion of Delta Faucet Company – starting in Brazil, the Middle East, Mexico, China, Southeast

Asia and India – as well as growing the capabilities of the U.S.-based international team. The competition is very fierce in the industry – what makes Delta unique and what are some of your strategies to keep Delta a leading commercial faucet provider? Ross: As a company born out of innovation, we take pride in continuing to innovate and lead in the areas of new

technology development, consumer research and design. The brand is extremely committed to designing products that improve the way people interact with water and this is the basis behind our award winning technologies and water-saving features. We go beyond excellent design to incorporate smart thinking that anticipates people's needs, providing thoughtful innovations and inspirational designs. In the region, I think one opportunity will come from

our innovations in water savings. Water consumption in the Middle East is extremely high compared to the global average, for this reason we think it is important to introduce products that place a high priority on environmental sustainability. We offer a wide range of residential and commercial faucets that have a high regards for water conservation. Staying on the topic of competition, if you could name one other company within the industry that you

respect – what company would that be? Ross: Competition in the Middle East region is diverse and vast; currently we cannot identify just one competitor. The Middle East has products coming in from various countries and some of the products excel both in form and function. Delta Faucet Company has been in the Middle East for a little over two years and we are still building the brand and realizing our potential, while competition has been here for over 30 years. Nevertheless we at Delta

Faucet Company believe that we possess innovative technology and striking design and it will not be long before we take over the Middle East. Where are Delta Faucet’s biggest markets today? Ross: Our biggest markets are most certainly Saudi and the UAE; however there has certainly been an upward surge in countries like Qatar, Jordan, Oman and Lebanon. We are working on a wide variety of projects throughout the GCC and Levant and we are definitely looking at a fruitful 2013. There are currently some leading manufactures in Europe already – how well is Delta known in Europe and do you find that it is a challenging market? Hans: Delta Faucet views the development of the international market as an important growth strategy, however we are yet to look at Europe as we are currently focussing on our expansion in the Emerging Markets, such as China, Brazil, India and the Middle East. Delta Faucet conducts market research in key markets which helps us to help evaluate the needs of each individual market. We are present in many multibrand markets because we believe that the Delta Faucet brand offers something unique to our customers. How important are emerging markets to Delta Faucet Company?

H2Okinetic™ showers

Ross: Delta Faucet Company continues to expand its international footprint through its operations in key emerging markets such as China, Brazil, India and the Middle East. We entered the Indian market at the end of last year and we have identified it along with other emerging markets with the aim of focusing on both retail and projects in these markets.

Interview: Hans-Juergen Kalmbach & Ross Jackson - Delta Faucet In India we have outlined plans to set up 20 stores by the end of this year and have already finalised the locations for 10 of these stores to be set up in the next three months.

Can you tell our readers more about the Sustainable Bathroom Competition in partnership with AUD – why did you decide to launch such a student competition?

objective of this competition is to engage the decision makers of the future at an early stage to ensure they are actively thinking about sustainable design &water conservation.

We have established a network of showrooms in Brazil and sales in both retail and projects are showing strong growth.

Ross: This region has one of the highest rates of water consumption globally. For this reason, we decided to be socially responsible and highlight this important issue and try to change the way people think about water usage. As mentioned earlier, we recently launched “The Sustainable Bathroom in The UAE competition” together with our partners American University in Dubai and AlAbbar Energy & Sustainability Group. This event coincides with United Nations World Water Day taking place on the 22nd of March, 2013 and the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation. The

Through our affiliations with leaders in the green building industry globally, such as PMI, the Alliance for Water Efficiency and the WaterSense Program, we strive to bring waterefficient, sustainable products to market, and educate trade professionals and consumers about water conservation and environmental awareness.

In china we are continuing to expand our distribution and further add to the number of showrooms, whilst continuing to drive sales throughout the country. How important is the Middle East to Delta Faucets? How is the market in the region? Which is the biggest market in the Middle East today? Ross: Since opening our first regional office in the United Arab Emirates, we have been working hard fortifying our regional footprint and strengthening our network across the Middle East. Delta Faucet's dedication to the region is evident through multiple partnerships with strategic distributors in Oman, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.

Our Biggest market in the Middle East region is undoubtedly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, but as we mentioned earlier Qatar and Jordan also have immense growth possibilities. What are your strategies to further improve in the Middle East? Ross: Delta Faucet Company has been trading in Saudi Arabia for more than 30 years and marked its entrance into the Middle East market in 2011 by opening its regional office in Dubai. The company’s dedication to the region is evident through multiple partnerships with strategic distributors in Oman, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.

issue 25

May - July 2013

Tell us more about Delta and environmental sustainability. How important is this to the company and what products are available to assist in conservation? Ross: Water consumption in the Middle East is extremely high compared to the global

average, for this reason we think it is important to introduce products that place a high priority on environmental sustainability. We offer a wide range of residential and commercial faucets that have a high regards for water conservation. H2Okinetic technology helps address this problem by giving users the feeling of more water without actually using more water. Each H2Okinetic shower employs the science of fluidics to manipulate the water droplet size and spray pattern, giving users the feeling of a more drenching and warming shower. After extensive research, Delta Faucet discovered that, while many consumers were willing to reduce their water consumption in other areas of the home, most were not willing to compromise their experience in the shower.

Tell us more about the latest novelties? Ross: Delta Faucet recently launched H2Okinetic handshowers and showerheads. With a full range of options to meet the needs of any homeowner, H2Okinetic showerheads are now offered at a rate less than the industry standard of 10 liters per minute thus using up to 40 percent less water than their standard counterpart’s showerheads. H2O Kinetic technology hand-showers and showerheads are available with Addison and other contemporary shower ranges. We also have a collection of DIAMOND™ Seal products which are our bestselling range. Diamond Seal Technology combines a durable DIAMOND™ Valve (a ceramic cartridge embedded with diamonds) with InnoFlex® PEX

waterways. The valve requires no lubrication, eliminates wear on seals, and ensures operation for the life of the faucet, lasting up to 10 times longer than the industry standard. Kitchen faucets include select models from the following ranges-Addison, Trinsic, Linden, Fuse, Pilar and Cassidy, while Bath faucets include select models from Addison and Lahara.

This year we are celebrating the 5th anniversary of Touch2O® Technology, an award-winning innovation that is a perfect example of how we are providing a smarter way to experience water. More than a decade ago, our research and development team realized that people with full or messy hands

needed a more convenient way to activate the faucet.

Today, the Delta brand offers eight kitchen suites and three bathroom suites featuring Touch2O Technology, as well as two bathroom suites with Touch2O.xt Technology. As General Manager for GCC & North Africa, what are some further objectives would you both like to achieve for the company? Ross: I will be working with the sales team on expanding the brand’s presence and recognition across the GCC, the Levant countries, North Africa and Turkey. We have been growing from strength to strength since entering the region and I have full confidence that the team will continue the good work. What can we further expect from Delta Faucet Company? What is in the pipeline?

Ross: Delta Faucet Company Middle East is currently working on several private villas and residences in the UAE and Oman through our dealer partners. We also have several projects in the pipeline, most recent include the Abu Dhabi Future School project, Habib Bank and a prestigious Military project in Afghanistan. Ultimately our aim is to bring water-efficient, sustainable products to market, and educate trade professionals and consumers about water conservation and environmental awareness. We have definitely seen great progress in the region when it comes to promoting sustainable living and we have witnessed a genuine push by government to implement stricter regulations. In the UAE, we are in the final stages of registering with Estidama, a sustainability development programme. In addition, we are also working on Trustmarks and registering with regulatory bodies in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Interview by: Ylova Hamdan

Made from honeycomb brass with black leather upholstery, the Creative director Donatella Donatella Chair pays homage Versace gave the Haas Brothers to the craftsmanship at the freedom to take the classic heart of Versace, with its form motifs of the house and create that was hand-crafted by the something pioneering and Haas Brothers.

Other pieces in the collection include The Stud Club, a armchair inspired by both Donatella’s personal style, and to the “Bondage” collection of 1992 designed by her brother, Gianni Versace, and The Bondage Bench, a provocative piece that plays with the sexuality of fashion and design.

I am thrilled by this special design project by The Haas Brothers for Versace Home. They have captured the spirit of Versace, and taken us somewhere new. To me, it is like remix of Versace, one that has resulted in new iconic pieces for the home. Donatella Versace

The Haas Brothers add “as artists and designers, meeting Donatella and exploring the world of Versace was an incredible inspiration. For this furniture collaboration, it was important to us to interpret the purest elements of Versace in order to create something completely new and unusual. We are so proud to present this collection for Versace”.

Introducing "Tools for Life" by OMA

Introducing the Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby Collection

"Tools for Life" by OMA offers a contemporary interface between furniture and people, supporting the ebb and flow of work and social life, while adjusting to the different needs of both.

A new collection of lounge furniture, occasional tables and a stool by Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby offers a relaxed, contemporary attitude toward interior design.

An expanded presentation of the OMA collection, which consists of 12 designs, will be on view during the 2013 Salone Internazionale del Mobile at Prada’s Milan exhibition space at via Fogazzaro, 36, where the pieces were first previewed during the Fall Men’s Show earlier this year. Public exhibition hours are 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM, Tuesday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 10.

The lounge furniture includes four individualized sized sofas and three complementary ottomans. Available in a range of upholstery fabrics and leathers, the lounge furniture is distinguished by stitched seams that reinforce its architectural profile, softened by the curvature of cushions on each face. The signature leg of the furniture can be specified in chrome, red or a black-painted finish.

Jay Osgerby and Edward Barber

A compact version of the lounge range is available as an arm chair as well as a twoand three-seat sofa. Scaled for the workplace, this grouping features a lower back and reduced seat depth. Occasional tables and a stool foil the casual aesthetic of the soft seating. A visually assertive aluminum base supports both round table tops and the wooden seat of the stool. Painted base finishes include black, white and red, and can be paired with a variety of stone and leather table tops.

Platner Arm Chair

The Sofa Collection is now available in Europe; the stool and occasional tables will be available Fall 2013.

Modern always™ For 75 years Knoll has remained true to the Bauhaus design philosophy that modern furniture should complement architectural space, not compete with it. To this end, the company's Salone exhibition presents ideas and themes that reflect its rich design heritage of furniture, textiles and accessories with work grounded in clarity of form and honesty in materials. Landmark collaborations with architects and designers resulting in such iconic work as Dining Tables and the Tulip Collection by Eero Saarinen; the Barcelona® Collection by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; the Bertoia Collection by Harry Bertoia; and the Wassily Chair by Marcel Breuer remind Salone visitors of the contemporaneity and accessibility of Knoll's rich heritage.

Lighting Baccarat

Baccarat

Highlights Recognised all over the world for its exceptional expertise, Baccarat has been writing the history of light ever since its first collection of chandeliers was created in the mid-19th century. That history combines tradition and innovation, extreme refinement and new technologies, to translate the legends of the past into the language of the present. Some of the world’s most talented designers have created Baccarat’s new collection, such as Fernando & Humberto Campana, Louise Campbell, Jean-Marc Gady, Jaime Hayon, Arik Levy, Philippe Nigro and Philippe Starck, and they were joined by students of the Lausanne art school, ECAL. The collection takes the boundaries of light into a magical new realm. Palazzo Morando: Throughout the special exhibition celebrating the French Art de Vivre, Baccarat unveiled its latest collection of lights in Highlights 2013 at Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Etrange Zénith Zénithal, 24-light chandelier

Zenith Sur La Lagune

Étrange Zénith Because the high technology processes used to produce crystalware now enable us to explore the realms of the possible and impossible alike, Philippe Starck has created five new exceptional pieces, following on from his many collaborative projects for Baccarat. Philippe Starck believes that there is no future without a past, so he has set out to take a fresh look at the mythical Zénith chandelier as a masterpiece crafted by the agility of the human hand and mind. The magic of the Zénithal, with its heightened dreamlike, visionary quality, is derived from the contrast between the 3D Baccarat chandelier and the marvellously wafer-thin 2D light panel. Showcased and magnified by this light panel, its many facets are set aflame, the twinkle of the crystal pendants mimicking the warm flicker of candlelight. The Zénith le samedi is both abstract and functional, work of art and design object, encircled by a neon Möbius strip created by the Ateliers de Feerick. Like a grafitti artist’s tag suspended in space, the light melds baroque grace with a techno-urban signature of modernity. The Zénith sur la lagune, designed in conjunction with glass artist Aristide Najean, goes for a consummately hybrid approach. The 24 lights chandelier, which is decorated with three heads in the effigy of the king of the forest, seals the coming together of Baccarat crystal and Murano glass. Mathematical equations and poetry, theory and practice become a one in this masterly, deeply oneiric piece. The Personne à la fenêtre wall light is the ultimate, compel-ling tribute to the iconic Zénith chandelier, taking its classic crystal arm and turning it into a mini-chandelier by reflecting in a sheet mirror. A melange of make-believe, illusion and duality, the myth is reinvented, just like a Surrealist poem. Philippe Starck once again revisits the timeless history of the iconic Harcourt glass, carrying on the tradition of the cult object by changing its uses and dimensions. From the wall fitting to the table lamp, from an empty Harcourt glass to a full one, its form may change but its destiny is, as ever, bolstered by its inherent wealth of possibilities. In the same vein, and following on from the Our Fire chandelier and Hic! hanging light fitting, the Harcourt Marie-Louise lamp and wall sconce take up residence in this luminous landscape of infinite potential. Each of the designs, at the frontier of image and object, asserts itself far beyond its own reflection, like messengers and illustrations of life.

Fusion Zénith Alvorada, 24-light chandelier

Fusion For 2013, Brazilian designers Fernando & Humberto Campana have created the Fusion collection. The new collection is born from the extraordinary alliance of two types of material and two forms of expertise, the combination of French Art de Vivre and Brazilian force of nature – a meeting of different cultures and creative territories. From the lanterns to flambeau chandeliers, from hanging lamps sheathed in colored, plaited wicker to the Zénith 24 lights chandelier, revisited and enhanced with bamboo branches and candle-rings, the models the Campana brothers have designed for Baccarat divert the DNA and primary use of the materials, transforming them into truly precious objects through a process of hybridisation. Each creation, whether sheathed in or enhanced by natural fibres, is available as a limited edition, and gives new meaning to the principles of collage, revealing its organic shape by creating contrasts between smooth and textured surfaces. Crystal looks to a new future “on the move”, as an exotic, unconventional light source, at the crossroads of art and design.

ALYA Design: Gabriele Rosa Dynamism and Lightness Alya in Arabic - characterize this pendant lamp. Three slender luminous arms recall a gesture, or a drawing in the air, rather than a material object. In fact, Alya's fluid shapes are the result of a natural bend in the aluminium that houses the LED lights and give it an extremely delicate aspect. Technical information: Pendant light with three LED strips for Indirect light, in addition a LED downlight spot is located in the central part. Arms in extruded aluminium, central body in die cast aluminium. Diffuser in opaline methacrylate. Available in white or opaque black. Dimmable with DALI control system upon request

GIO' TERRA Design: Angeletti Ruzza Design Having already been entered into the ADI Design Index 2011, the Giò pendant now evolves to become a sophisticated floor lamp. Designed by Angeletti Ruzza Design studio, Giò dematerializes the lamp to its very essence, sketching it out as a gesture in luminous material. With fluidity and continuity Giò Terra unwinds from its base to become the stem and closes itself at the top with a luminous LED circle, acquiring unique energy. Gentle and essential, the Giò floor lamp tells a tale of contemporary lighting, in which the performance of the light merges with our emotions. Technical information: Family of dimmable LED pendant and floor lamps. Made entirely of opaque whit and graphite painted aluminium, with opaline polycarbonate diffuser. In the floor version, emission is indirect with power supply in the base. Switch and dimmer on the cable. DALI control system upon request.

MARGOT Design: Carlo Forcolini, Giancarlo Fassina Margot, a new hinged floor lamp, was created by Nemo's founder, together with Giancarlo Fassina. Thanks to a careful study of its mechanics, Margot establishes a delicate balancing game between the supporting frame and the diffuser which, like a pendant lamp, flies over the space. Thanks to the twistable arm, the light cone Margot emits can be easily positioned to light different parts of the space. It can reach a great number of points in the same space. Technical information: Adjustable LED floor lamp in opaque white aluminium and metal.

PROJECTEUR 165 Design: Le Corbusier Designed by Le Corbusier for the Chandigarh High Court in 1954, Projecteur remained unknown until 2012, when it was rediscovered in the archives of the Le Corbusier Foundation in Paris. Rebuilt based on the only available document – a profile drawing of it – the Projecteur has now found a totally new declension. The original size variations identified by the suffix 365 have now been added to with the small-sized Projecteur 165 family, available with a clamp, wall-mounting bracket or as a pendant lamp. The extended range, developed by Nemo in close collaboration with the Le Corbusier Foundation, offers an industrial-style product whose clamp version can be used in different spheres of the home setting: above a mirror, on a bookshelf, or attached to the head of a bed. Its pendant and bracket versions becomes recognisable design objects that illuminate and furnish rooms with both style and functionality. Technical information: Adjustable mini version of the Projecteur. Aluminium body painted “bleu stablé” with sanblasted glass diffuser and anodized aluminium interior, assembled to a steel clamp. RIPPLE Design: Marcel Sigel Inspired by the desire for refined simplicity is RIPPLE, an original interpretation of the classic table lamp. Marcel Sigel has designed a lamp using only essential, superimposed and proportional elements, to create something warmly familiar but also extremely unique and neutral, to complete any room. This lamp captures the gaze with its superficial three-dimensionality that appears to recall the fingerprints left in clay turned at the potter's wheel. Technical information: Family of aluminium floor and table lamps. Single-piece diffuser in semi-transparent thermoformed polymer. Available in 3 colours with opaline diffuser in white and smoke grey. Ripple has been designed to ensure optimal illumination with a compact fluorescent bulb.

TRU Sospensione Design: Roberto Paoli Out of the success of the floor lamp Tru – created for Nemo by designer Roberto Paoli – comes the new pendant version. Formed by a slender aluminium ring frame, Tru appears light, almost ephemeral – a "non-object", as Roberto Paoli likes to call it. It's therefore surprising when Tru lights up: the lamps are, in fact, perfectly concealed in the V-shaped linear profiles that make up the light fixture. Thanks to the use of high efficiency LEDs and a structural study of the lamp, Tru Sospensione casts light both downwards and upwards, nominating itself as the ideal solution for meeting rooms and offices. Technical information: Materials and finishes: Floor and pendant LED lamp. Body in extruded aluminium. Headboard and base in die cast aluminium in the floor version. Opaline and transparent methacrylate diffusers.

It has become a system that's suitable for the most diverse compositions. Technical information: System of micro LED pendants, made up of a die cast aluminium body, to create individual or multiple compositions. Opaque white polycarbonate diffusers. Wooden floors Timberwise

TIMBERWISE

SAFE AND ECOLOGICAL PARQUET CHOICE FOR LIVING SPACES

The Finnish wooden flooring manufacturer, Timberwise, offers an alternative for ordinary wooden flooring with hazardous adhesives and health risks. Wooden flooring adds both value and ambiance to homes, hotels and offices. However, some types of natural or engineered wooden flooring come with health risks as hazardous adhesives, like formaldehyde, are used in the production process. These adhesives often release hazardous vapors and fumes into the air as they continue

144

to do so over many months or even years. Timberwise is a Finnish producer of full plank wooden flooring that offers an alternative for ordinary wooden flooring with hazardous adhesives. Infact, the company was the first manufacturer in the world to switch to completely formaldehyde free adhesives in all their products. As a result, the parquet does not release harmful formaldehyde into the air, and risk of irritation and allergies is reduced.

"As a Finnish parquet manufacturer, we respect nature and appreciate the advanced Finnish expertise in wood processing", says Laura Lankinen, the Marketing Manager of Timberwise. She continues: "The floor is one of the larges surface in a living space. That is why we ensure that Timberwise plank parquets are safe, beautiful and durable." The Timberwise wooden floors belong to the best building material classes for emissions and adhesive joints, such as JAS F**** and JAS 2. In addition to looking after the air the you breathe, Timberwise also takes care of nature. The wood that the company uses comes from certified forests, where the

number of trees that is planted exceeds the number that is harvested. The products are naturally PEFC (Progamme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified. Additionally, Timberwise has replaced exotic wood with state-of-the-art coloring techniques. As natural material, wood adapts to current circumstances of the changes in temperature and in relative air humidity cause stress to the parquets's glue joints. To prove the durability, the crossglued three-layer structure of Timberwise parquet has passed the industry's most demanding glue joint tests. Lankinen states: "Even boiling water will not break the structure of our product."

Tiles & Ceramics Kale Group Aesthetic and striking series from Çanakkale Seramik Saraylı (Ottoman) Collection Saraylı (Ottoman) Collection brings the traditional understanding of Ottoman architecture and decoration to today's baths with Çanakkale Seramik’s interpretation: with its lines uniting traditional with modern, it reinterprets hundreds of years of palace motifs with modern lines in ceramic tiles, bathroom furniture and sanitary ware products. Designed for those who want to feel the magnificent lifestyle of the Ottoman Empire at home, the Saraylı Collection recalls the grandeur of the palaces with its Birun Series that combines emerald, ruby and sapphire colours with Ottoman motifs.

Enderun Series Named after the presentation room in the inner part of the Ottoman palace where the Padishah would meet with ambassadors and viziers, the series adds distinction to baths with its colours of emerald, ruby and sapphire. The series fascinates the imagination with its eye-catching designs on ceramic surfaces and integrates these with caftan motifs, tulips and chintemani figures, all inspired by the textures of the spectacular Ottoman jewellery and textiles. The Enderun Series with 20x60 cm moulded wall tiles adorned with the zencirek (chain) pattern, which was common in Ottoman palaces, and designed in saturated colours, again have full decorations that unite the tulip, which became an Ottoman symbol, and the gold interpretation of the chintemani design. The series is complemented with brilliant caftan full décor, the most elegant interpretation of the caftan design, and gold borders inspired by the grandeur of the Ottomans.

Maison Collection In today's world, natural surfaces and concrete, the raw components of structures, are more popular in dĂŠcor, and walls are commonly decorated with textile textures. The Maison Collection gathers these two trends together, reinterpreting luxury and featuring Ottoman patterns on 30x90 cm ground tiles, elegant decoration alternatives and other complementary designs enabling you to create different spaces. The Maison Natural merges the effect of exposed concrete, the favourite material of modern interior architecture, with metallics to bring a new attraction to your living spaces. Combining the warmth of textile texture with unusual tones and sophisticated designs, the Maison Romance series spreads enchantment throughout your home.
