On April 8th some of the Resistance members went on a mission to find out about the proximate German plans. For the past week we have been waiting for answers. Yesterday three of the eight men on the mission however came back to Copenhagen with bad news. The other five men were executed or arrested by the Nazis. The names of these five people are the following: -George Danielsen -Ian Blomberg -David Hansen -Louis Meyer -Pol Egeberg These are the names of the five victims. All our condolences to their family and friends. However the remaining men have discovered that the Germans are planning to take all Jewish people away from Denmark. The Resistance is looking for volunteers to help as many Jews as possible to survive and stay hidden until the war ends. You can sign up in a list at the meeting hall on Friday evening.

As you know Sweden is one of the few countries that haven’t been invaded by the Nazis in Europe. To cross the Sound (the space between Sweden and Denmark) you have to go to the coastal countryside, towards the North. Going to the countryside to cross is better because there are fewer soldiers than in the cities, and it is much easier to be unnoticed. Something new is that there are members of the Resistance and some fishermen that will help you go across the sea. If you are going to do this you have to go to the port. You will see a little cabin at the end of the port. Only say “We need some help” and the man will tell you what to do. They will transport you on a hidden space inside a fishing boat until you arrive to Sweden saftly. Good luck!

Although it is very difficult to be spotted by the Germans if you escape to Sweden the way you have been told to above, here are some tips for clothing and German language in case you are seen on the boat: -Learn some basic German language -Dress up as a soldier -Go with some kind of weapon (if you can) -Bring the drug for the dogs (if there are not enough clothes we can hide some Jews in the boat with the drug) -Bring fake soldier ID Don’t worry if you don’t own either of these things, you will be given some of these things at the Underground Denmark shop and if you want, you will be taught some basic German language.

Michael Soenksen, a member of the resistance has offered himself to make an interview. He will tell us all you should know about the Resistance. Interviewer: Dan Winberg Guest: Michael Soenksen Dan: Good morning Michael. we are gathered here today so you can tell us what you and your partners do at the Resistance. Let’s start with the main question. What is the Resistance? Michael: Well Dan, the Resistance is a group of men and women who are willing to risk their own lives for Denmark. We all gather in a hideout and have weekly meetings to decide what we will be doing next to help our country. Dan: Can you tell us how you can join the Resistance? Michael: To be part of this group you must carry out certain tasks and an interview. When we think a person can be trusted we gladly offer him to be part of our group. We choose the members very carefully for the Resistance because not everyone can be trusted. Although we really need new members. Anyone can come to the meeting hall on Fridays to sign up.
Dan: What is the job of a Resistance member, what do you do exactly? Michael: In the Resistance there are experienced people who are the ones that take care of the difficult missions like sneaking into the Germans meetings. Then we have the outsiders who live outside Copenhagen and help us by delivering food and clothes and also offering rides on boats for the Jewish. We also have the beginners who do local tasks like deliver The Daily Denmark. But mainly we try to do as much as possible to help our country. Like for example there are people who meet up with citizens to talk and comfort them and encourage them to be calm. Dan: Really the Resistance has been helping a lot. We are all very proud and satisfied with your work. It’s a true sacrifice everything you do. Thanks a lot for your time Michael. Michael: You are welcome Dan. It was a pleasure.

We have the latest news from the Resistance. They have figured out that the Nazis wanted to take advantage of their power and take our boats to fight in the war. The date in which they were going to take them was unclear but now it is not a problem. A group of anonymous people sneaked out to the shore and did a remarkable gesture that no one in Denmark will forget. These people blew up all the Danish boats so the Germans could not use them for war. We still don’t know the identity of these mysterious people but we are all very grateful for their act.

-Interviewer:I think you have something important to tell us. -Jewish citizen: Yes, I am very scared after what I heard yesterday at the Krystalgade Synagogue in Copenhagen. -I: What did you hear? -J: Rabbi said that the night between the 1st and the 2nd of October, the Gestapo, the German soldiers, will come and they will arrest all Danish Jews. -I: But, how do the Gestapo know where the Jews live? -J: They have an address list that they caught in the synagogue and they will go to every Jew’s home. -I: What will the Nazis do with the Jewish Danes? -J: Probably, they will take us to concentration camps, a place to provide forced labour or who knows what they are doing. -I: There are many soldiers on the street, shops are closing, the curfew is earlier... In conclusión, what can we do to prevent this? -J: There are two important things we can do: Firstly, we must keep away from our homes this Friday night. We don’t know what will happen. Secondly, we have to transmit this message to all our friends and family.
-I: As you know, many people are risking their lives by helping you to escape to Sweden. What message would you give these people? -J: We would like to thank the Danes who hide us in their homes and who help us to escape from the Nazis. -I: Thank you very much for answering these questions and I hope that the war finishes soon. -J: Thanks, oh! Just one more thing:
In conclusion all Danish people must unite to defend our freedom

Many of these viewers tell themselves that what they see is not their business. Fortunately, thanks to the resistance and to many other Danish citizens, we are managing to save many Jews. They started to create smalls groups of resistance, strikes against the Nazi soldiers and they also boycott them. An example is the group called KOPA, it is a subgroup of another resistance group BOPA, they are mainly students and they set fire to a factory. After interviewing many Jewish people, we want to tell you the story of one of them: R: Are you starting to fear the “relocation” Nazis are planning to do with Danish jewish? J: At first I wasn’t afraid because I thought they would go but now, the Jewish people that I know are starting to be relocated and I am starting to fear the reprisals that the Nazis are taking on the Jewish population.
R: How are you going to deal with this situation? J: The first thing I thought was that I
needed to know more and look for help to save my family. I’m being helped by the Resistance, they are excellent. In some days we will escape to Sweden.
We will pretend to be fishermen with fake passports the Resistance are making for us. R: Do you think Nazis will enter Sweden? J: I don’t think so, Nazis don’t seem to be interested in this, but if this occurs, Sweden is better prepared to deal with the Nazis.

A CITIZEN’S STATEMENT -What’s your name? -My name is Hermann. -Tell us something about you. -I was born in Copenhagen, in 1904, and I would die for my king. -What do you think about the war?How are you living it? -The war is terrible, of course, I think it is the worst thing in the universe, they take our houses and they take our relatives. I’m living it very badly, because as I said they have taken some of my relatives, and now I’m living in a shelter center, where they are looking after me very well. -And the last question Hermann, do you think the war will end soon? -I don’t know, maybe yes or maybe no, the only thing I want to say is that we don’t have to be afraid, there are a lot of people like us in the world right now, so why do we have to be afraid? -Thank you Hermann.
