Book Review for Girl in a Band (A Memoir) by Kim Gordon/ Review Written by Evyn Papworth As a Sonic Youth fan and aspiring musician, I consider Kim Gordon, their former bassist and vocalist, to be one of my biggest inspirations. Her memoir, Girl in a Band, had been on my list for a while, so when traveling in New York this summer I was excited to pick up a copy and finally start reading it.
Kim Gordon is often defined only by her work with Sonic Youth, one of the most influential post-punk bands of the ’90s. This means she is also typically thought of with her ex-husband and bandmate, Thurston Moore. In her memoir, Kim explores everything from her childhood growing up in LA to motherhood while on tour, as well as the stories behind many of Sonic Youth’s songs. A compelling, evocative read, Girl in a Band presents a much more intimate side of Kim, as well as showing her as a dynamic artist of various expressions outside of Sonic Youth. Overall, I would highly encourage anyone and everyone (Sonic Youth fans or not) to give Girl in a Band a read, and explore the post-punk, Riot Grrrl scene, and what it means to find yourself through creative expression in unlikely circumstances.

B-Side Collective began in 2016 as a response to the current music scene at Colorado College and Colorado Springs as a whole. Recognizing the many ways in which the music scene could be limiting and the ways in which privilege can dominate a musical space, this group formed to offer an inclusive community for females, gender non-conforming, and queer/lgbtqia+ students.
