satisfying moments.

April is upon us and—finally—spring is undeniably here. The poet T.S. Eliot famously called April the “cruelest month,” but here on Amelia Island, I think most of us would describe it as anything but cruel. In fact, after cooler temperatures this winter, the word “glorious” quickly comes to mind. In addition to the warm weather, April is also the month for our annual Amelia Islander Magazine “Home & Design” special issue. The Home & Design special issue is always a favorite of ours. Building a home, buying a home, or turning the home you love into the castle of your dreams can be one of life’s most satisfying moments. Creating a peaceful, comfortable environment in which to raise a family or enjoy retirement is a vital part of life. When we create a home for ourselves, we make decisions that reflect our priorities at the time, whether that means an extra bedroom for guests, a private study, or a bonus room for the kids. As we grow and change through the years, our homes reflect those changes. When kids are in the home, we need bedrooms, perhaps a playroom or bonus room where the kids can congregate, or backyards oriented to playscapes and outdoor games. When kids leave the nest, we may then find ourselves reorienting a bedroom into a den or a hobby room—at least until the grandkids start arriving! Our color palette as well can change as we enter different stages of our lives. In this issue, we are happy to share the stories of two Amelia Island couples and their exceptional homes. In the first feature, we meet Diane and Jack Lord, who settled on Amelia Island after searching up and down the Florida peninsula. They bought a home on Long Point in Amelia Island Plantation and, with the help of local builders and designers, renovated it to incorporate their love of nature into their stunning new home. In the second feature, we catch up with Charlotte and Mike Bowling, who fell for a Carlton Dunes condominium and its stunning ocean views. They loved the condo’s beachy ambience, but when they decided they wanted a change, they turned to longtime friend and local restauranteur Brett Carter, who created a gorgeous kid- and pet-friendly environment for the couple. Also this month, we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Katie Caples Foundation and their outstanding work to raise awareness about organ donation; we take a look at the work of the Amelia Island Genealogical Society, which helps local residents explore their roots; we learn about the European-American Business Club; present some spring grilling recipes; and much more.

hen you’re from a combination of Miami and Maryland, where do you meet in the middle? Amelia Island, of course! Diane and Jack Lord wanted to find a home on the east coast of Florida, and they searched from the bottom of the peninsula to the top. Then they showed up on Amelia Island for just one weekend, and they knew immediately this was home. “When we came here, we were convinced this island offers the best quality of life. are uncrowded, dog-friendly beaches, kayaking, biking, and, of course, golf. And it’s just really a peaceful place,” says Jack. A peaceful place is something the couple appreciates after two demanding careers in healthcare. up companies that introduce disruptive, transformative innovations aimed at improving patient care. On Amelia Island, finding serenity didn’t take long. In fact, the Lords found their new abode on their very first search. “Ironically, this house is the first one we found,” Jack explains. Their waterfront home on Long Point in Amelia Island Plantation popped up as their favorite during an online search with Joe Cutajar of First Coast Sotheby’s International Realty. “Joe is a lot of fun, and he offered really good ideas that went into our remodel,” says the couple. Architect John Doddwassoonsecuredtodraftplans, andheworkedwiththe team at Julia Hall Interiors to perfect the couple’s vision for the redesign. “We envisioned a nature theme, with an abundance of sunlight, open space, simplicity, natural products, and a clear color palette based on white, creams, silver, grey, and black, with touches of emerald green,” says Diane. The couple achieved their vision magnificently. The once choppy, boxy floor plan is now an open plan, with large widows, an enormous kitchen island, a custom master closet, and a redesigned master bath. Stairs were adjusted, walls transformed into windows, solid doors to glass, and colors lightened to open the space and bring the outside in. 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

As the home’s architectural redesign was coming into focus, it was time to get to work on the interior details. John Gorham, the builder for the remodel, introduced the couple to Robyn Branch Design, who worked with the Julia Hall Interiors team and the Lords to complete the finishing details. “This project will always stand out in our portfolios,” says Robyn. “To have the opportunity to collaborate with another designer was such a great experience, and it illustrates the uniqueness of Amelia Island and its sense of community.” Julie echoes Robyn’s sentiments. “This group of local designers and craftsmen was like having the best chefs prepare the most amazing meal,” she smiles. “The results are stunning, and our clients are thrilled!” The couple’s travel played a large role in the finished product. “We spent many hours with the design team and we were intimately involved in each selection,” Diane explains. “Traveling to cities with major 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

design centers proved to be very helpful in finding unique items and special pieces.” Robyn notes that almost every design selection in the home is a custom selection for the Lords, and that distinctiveness results in a truly special environment. Not only are the details stunning, the selections are smart. “The Lords were focused on function, even with their appliance selections, flooring, and fabrics,” Julie explains. Take, for example, the pull-apart sofa just off the kitchen, which allows the couple to enjoy the outdoor water view or rotate it for a visit with the chef in the kitchen. Or consider the inclusion of a smaller, auxiliary dishwasher, the perfect size for just two people. Meanwhile, the upstairs space hosts an unparalleled media room, a his/her office, an exercise room which Jack visits daily, a piano loft for Diane’s new hobby, and guest bedrooms, with one especially for their grandchildren.

Top left: The stunning master suite evokes the natural world through each element: the hand-sculpted rose rug, parchment, fish skin, leather and sea pearl textures, and the mouth-blown crystal lamps. Top right: A vessel tub in front of an enormous window brings the marsh inside. The glass enclosure keeps light bouncing around the master bath, while a waterfall edge defines the vanity. Above: The grandchildren’s space is fun and colorful, making optimum use of space with the L-shaped bunk beds and underdrawers for storage.

Life on Amelia Island has been all the Lords imagined. The couple enjoys time on the beach with their terrier mix, whom they confess “we utterly pamper.” Jack is an avid golfer, and Diane took up the game two years ago, quickly earning a reputation for her tireless practicing at Long Point. And while Diane is learning golf, Jack is working on his dance moves so he can keep up with his two-stepping, waltzing, cha-cha-cha-ing spouse. Diane and Jack Lord know how to meet in the middle, but they both agree that living on Amelia Island has required very few compromises.

ISLAND CHAMBER SINGERS PRESENT SPRING CONCERT AT AMELIA PLANTATION CHAPEL

On April 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Amelia Island Museum of History, for the first time, will offer a tour of small cottages clustered on the south side of Centre Street, all within walking distance of one another. Many of these petite gems were built in the early 1900s, with the oldest cottage built circa 1905 and the newest finished just last year. These small homes have been lovingly designed to create cozy and convenient spaces. Beautiful heart of pine floors, fireplaces, and unique details make each house a treasure. Each cottage showcases owners who have used their talents and individual styles in these homes, all while preserving the charm and distinctive qualities of the home. The owners of the cottages are a unique group themselves, including artists, antique collectors, retirees, and newly-marrieds. The artists have created studios out of sheds and garages, and their work will be on display. Those touring are asked to wear flat shoes as beautiful old wooden floors need to be protected. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the tour. Tickets are available at the Museum, 233 South 3rd Street, or at Peterbrooke Chocolatier, near Publix, and online at www.ameliamuseum.org.

Elijah premiered in 1846 at England’s Birmingham Festival, depicting the life of the Biblical prophet Elijah. Accompanied by strings, timpani, and piano, the Island Chamber Singers will be led by ICS Founder and Director Jane Lindberg. The choruses will be performed by the entire choir, with a few sections that feature small ensembles within the choir. Performances will be held on Friday, April 13 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 15 at 3 p.m. An opening night reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall immediately following Friday evening’s performance. Tickets are $20 for adults when purchased ahead of the concert day. They can be purchased online at www.IslandChamberSingers.org; from a member of the Island Chamber Singers; at the Amelia Island Welcome Center; Peterbrooke Chocolatier; AIFBY Chamber of Commerce; and Harrison’s Mercantile at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort Shops. Tickets at the door are $25. Student tickets are free. For more information or to audition with the group, call (904) 225-0575.

WHITE OAK POSTER EXHIBITION AT FERNANDINA BEACH LIBRARY The Friends of the Library’s exhibition of posters from the White Oak Conservation Center is on display through the end of April in the Fernandina Beach Library’s Community Room gallery. White Oak Conservation was created in Nassau County in 1982 by Howard Gillman to help preserve some of the world’s most endangered species. It remains today one of the premier wildlife breeding, research, and training facilities in the world. Posters on display represent Gilman’s love for music, opera, horses, endangered animals, and dance. Gilman supported Mikhail Baryshnikov and created the White Oak Dance Studio for Baryshnikov and Mark Morris to explore new choreographic development in ballet and modern dance. Several posters show his commitment to dance and music. Gilman (1924-1987), who became chair and CEO of the Gilman Paper Company in 1983 after the death of his father and brother, created the Howard Gilman Foundation. The Foundation gave to organizations devoted to science, medicine, education, endangered animals, social justice, and the visual and performing arts. These were Gilman’s philanthropic passions. The exhibition is open during select hours. The Fernandina Beach Library is located at 25 North 4th Street. For viewing hours, call the library at (904) 530-6500 or visit www.fernandinafol.org.

inner of Nikon/Popular Photography’s 2008 International Mentor Series, Grand Prize, and First Place in Photography at the 2014 Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, professional fine art wildlife photographer, portrait photographer, and teacher, Steve Leimberg seeks out the beauty in what is unseen or passed by. His website, UnSeenImages.com, demonstrates the scope of his travels and depth of his work. Three galleries of particular interest to Amelia Islanders include portraits of the people of American Beach, a second featuring the cars of the Concours d’Elegance, and a third called “People,” where you’ll recognize many local actors, musicians, and local characters, as well as intimate portraits of nationally known people such as Pat Conroy. “My website gallery is a place designed to share beauty,” says Leimberg. “Both real and imagined, incredible moments are missed unless you slow down, stop, and look a little more closely—and with different eyes—at the intense color, texture, lines, and shapes of those images—moments that most others haven’t seen.” Leimberg’s desire to “image” people, places, and objects is

ironic, since he has a learning disability that prevents him from creating or recalling images in his mind. When he closes his eyes, the world goes black. “Photography brings those images back,” says Leimberg. “It also opens the door to fascinating people I never would have met and places I never would have gone.” A strong supporter of Wild Amelia and the Amelia Tree Conservancy, the “Bird Man of Amelia” is passionate about and preserving the unique environment of Amelia Island. He uses images to make people fight to protect what sets Amelia Island apart from other places. “My fine art nature photography is a way of saying all this beauty is in danger and will be lost if we don’t act to save it!” Steve’s book with Dawna and Scott Moore, “A Day on Amelia,” a sun-up-to-sunset “book in a bag” photographic exploration of Amelia Island, can be found at Story & Song, The Book Loft, and Twisted Sisters. His fine art work can be viewed and purchased by appointment at his private studio. He also accepts commissions for portraits. Story & Song Bookstore Bistro

or the past 25 years, Donna and Mark Kaufman have helped people launch and operate successful independent bookstores. Since moving to Amelia Island 16 years ago, it has been their dream to have a bookstore that was a community gathering place. “We wanted to provide books, music, art, food, wine, and coffee in a bright, lively environment,” says Donna. Story & Song Bookstore Bistro is a community “living room” that includes a bookstore, art gallery, event space, and courtyard, plus a coffee and wine bar with comfortable furniture and tables. The space allows for author readings, concerts, storytelling, art classes, and anything that brings people together. The bistro offers fresh, locally made foods including salads, soups, and more. Story & Song is located in Amelia Park, the perfect setting for this unique, indie bookstore. “The neighborhood setting offers a refreshing escape from ‘screen fatigue’ and the busyness of life,” says Mark. “We looked at six other locations before we settled on this place, conveniently located mid-island, with lots of parking and a natural setting.” Story & Song serves the Amelia Island community and its visitors, and it is home to the Center for Bookstore Entrepreneurship, which trains people from around the world on opening a bookstore. Upcoming events include concerts, TED Talk discussions, “Movies with a Message,” and a Poetry Canteen. For more information, call (904) 601-2118 or visit www.storyandsongbookstore.com or their Facebook page. They are located at 1430 Park Avenue and open 7 days a week.

im Kelly-Speranza’s love for Amelia Island began over twenty years ago when her family started the tradition of vacationing here from Atlanta. “This was always my ‘happy place,’” she smiles. Little did she know that one day she’d meet her husband, marry, and live on the south end of the island while taking a leap of faith to start a business that tries to make a positive impact on the community. Kim is passionate about two things—health and wellness, and supporting the senior population—and her resume reflects these passions. “In 2015, I became a Jazzercise franchisee/ owner and instructor, returned to college for a BS in Advanced Allied Health, and volunteered at Osprey Village Senior Living Community.” This collection of experience and employment at Osprey Village led Kim to realize her goal of assisting the baby boomer population, as well as young mothers and others looking improve their fitness, right here in her own neighborhood. AmeliaFit, which is also known as Amelia Island Fitness & Event, opened in mid-January and is conveniently located next to the Amelia Island Montessori School at 1401 Julia Street, Ste. 211. AmeliaFit offers a variety of Jazzercise LO and gentle yoga classes provided by Centred On Yoga Southend. Beginning April 9, AmeliaFit will add something new: a daily Silver Sneakers Classic class at 11:30 a.m., with additional Silver Sneaker classes and times in the near future. ike and Charlotte Bowling never thought they’d be living in a condominium. That is, until they visited a 4th floor unit at Carlton Dunes and fell in love with the pristine white beaches and beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean from the condo’s oceanfront balcony. It was destiny, it seems, that brought them to this particular unit, which they found while they were in the process of selling their own home. “At the same time we were looking at the Carlton Dunes unit, the unit’s owner was looking at our home,” laughs Charlotte. “So basically, we just switched houses! Mike and I saw an amazing potential with this condo, and we really loved the location.” With the expertise of their dear friend, designer Brett Carter (the restaurateur behind Brett’s Waterway Café), Mike and Charlotte made their new place their new home. “The condo

was very ‘beachy’ when we first bought it,” says Charlotte. “But then our tastes changed, and we wanted it to be more warm and welcoming, and also dog and kid-friendly.” Carter had decorated the Bowling’s other residences, and the couple put their trust in his judgment. They have been friends for over 20 years, and have even traveled together. “Brett knows us very well!” says Charlotte. It’s not surprising that the Bowlings are dog-lovers, as Mike invented the “loveable and huggable” Pound Puppies in 1984, which have been sold in 35 countries. Staunch and generous supporters of the Nassau Humane Society, Mike and Charlotte have two adopted dogs of their own, which can be found sprawled comfortably on their furniture at any given time. “We love our dogs,” laughs Mike. “They mean the world to us.” But Mike and Charlotte also love children, and see the importance of a good education for enriching young minds. Mike is a supporter of the Accelerated Reading Program for second and third graders at Southside and Emma Love Elementary Schools. Upon completion of their reading requirements, the children earn a Pound Puppy. While Carter was working on the renovations at Carton Dunes, the Bowlings waited patiently at their riverfront home, located in Nassau County. “Brett wanted the home to be perfect for us, so we stayed away while he worked,” says Mike. “When the day came for the ‘big reveal,’ along with all the surprises of the renovation, Brett had prepared a private dinner 34 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

He has the touch.” Carter is a wallpaper aficionado and he designed special wallpaper for one of the guest bathrooms, covered with whimsical varieties of dogs. He also chose the color palette for the foyer’s wallpaper—a 3-dimensional tiled paper that is reminiscent of a starlit sky. Since the living room was to be the heart of the home, and the fireplace had been previously removed, Brett used that wall for floor-to-ceiling mirrors that reflected the ocean views from the balconies. He then enlarged the living area, bringing the outdoors in, since Mike and Charlotte are outdoor enthusiasts. Because the couple entertains quite a bit, in addition to their two dogs and five grandchildren, they needed extra space and seating capacity. Brett brought in eclectic chairs and ottomans, and arranged their new furniture so that the living area can seat up to 12 guests comfortably. He also tells us honestly about what will and will not work in the space.” This the third renovation Carter has done in this condo— one with the original owner, and now two with the Bowlings. “I see how people’s tastes change, and the way their lifestyles change and grow,” says Carter. “The condo, which used to be contemporary, is now warm and comfortable, just like Mike and Charlotte themselves.” “It’s a beautiful, comfortable, and friendly space that welcomes our family and friends,” says Charlotte. “That’s so important to us now. Mike and I truly love it here!” 38 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

YEARS

OF SAVING

LIVES With their tireless work on behalf of organ donation, the Katie Caples Foundation has made a difference in countless lives over the past twenty years. BY JULIE SIMMONS PHOTOS BY RICK WILSON, RICK WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY

K

atie Caples is a very familiar name if you’re a longtime Amelia Islander. Newcomers, please meet a legend in our island community, not just for the remarkable life that she led but also for the five lives she saved with one decision—to register as an organ donor. Katie, the daughter of Susan and David Caples, was 17 years old and a new driver who made the decision to register as an organ donor when she received her license. Her generosity not only directly impacted those five recipients, but it encouraged her family to honor her decision by creating the Katie Caples Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3), with one mission—to deliver the message of the life-changing impact of organ donation. Since the foundation’s beginning 20 years ago, the Caples and their host of volunteers have worked tirelessly to deliver their message and help save lives. “Organ donation is the purest gift of love,” says Dr. Joseph Tepas, Katie’s pediatric surgeon following her car accident and a member of the Katie Caples Foundation’s Advisory Council. Little did Dr. Tepas know that one day he himself would find himself on the receiving end of an organ donation. “When

after years of promoting donation, you are suddenly given a lifesaving gift from someone you don’t even know, you quickly realize that human behavior defaults to kindness. Being an organ donor assures that you and those who love you will experience the joy of this kindness.” Today, Dr. Tepas is thriving and he is thrilled to participate in the foundation’s primary fundraiser, the 14th annual Katie Ride presented by Mayo Clinic. The event, held this year on April 21, consists of six mini events: an 18-, 34-, or 63- mile bike ride, 8k walk/run, an off-road bike event through historic Fort Clinch State Park, and the fun triathlon—all to celebrate National Donate Life Month, raise funds along with awareness about organ donation, and, of course, to register donors. For many on Amelia Island, the Katie Ride is an important tradition. “The support of the community is what keeps driving us forward,” says Susan Caples. “Board members, corporate partners, in-kind providers, Katie Ride participants, and volunteers—every single person is vital to our success and responsible for literally saving lives by simply being involved.” The Katie Ride is one focus of the foundation, but the flagship effort is the Big Hearts Campus Challenge, a program

in high schools and colleges designed to educate on organ, tissue, and eye donation and register interested parties just-in-time. Lee Southwick is from Amelia Island, and he leads University of Florida’s branch of this campaign. “Big Heart Gators is important for many reasons. Two important ones - It spreads the word about organ donation and it helps squash false, negative stereotypes associated with registering to become a donor,” he explains. “Ultimately, it leads to more registered donors, which leads to more lives saved. 87 percent of Americans support organ donation, but only 50 percent have actually registered. I participate because the knowledge of organ donation must be spread. I understand how an organ donation turns a sad situation—a death —into new life.” “The Katie Caples Foundation campus programs help us reach students, faculty, and administrators in an extremely effective, efficient manner,” says David Caples. “These peer-led organizations are tremendous assets for us, as they’re able to serve as ambassadors for organ donation registration yearround. Having passionate, engaged student leaders creates a unique opportunity for us, as we’re able to leverage our resources and have a far greater reach than we ever dreamed.” For more information on registering for this year’s Katie Ride, the Katie Caples Foundation, and becoming an organ donor, visit katiecaples.org.

W

hen U.K. native Tim Burningham first moved to Amelia Island, he noticed many residents had foreign accents – French, Spanish, German, and others. He began to strike up conversations with people, asking them where they were from and soon, Tim had many European friends. “The European American Business Club formed when we realized that we had common backgrounds and a direct connection because we were all from Europe,” says Burningham. “Amelia Island has an attraction for foreign nationals from around the globe, and this group provides an opportunity for such people to promote business and network with our American locals.” Founded by Helmut Albrecht, Caroline Blochlinger, and Burningham, the EABC is not limited to European natives, and many of their members, such as Marc Williams, who

Today we have regular guests with passports from 12 different countries. We have always pointed out that this is a European American business network. You don’t have to prove that you have European DNA, which many of us have anyway, to come to meetings. And while EABC fulfills a social need, the core of its activities is still about business.” Many concerns addressed and “networked” at meetings involve issues faced by all business owners: jobs, housing, recruiting techniques, training, schools, and the like. Members of the EABC include people from all walks of life, from travel and real estate agents to financial planners, small business owners, expatriates, and retired business people. “The most important thing that we all get out of the group is connections,” says Tim. “Many of the connections start out with business matters, but they also turn into friendships.” The EABC meets once a month at various locations, but a favorite spot is the Amelia River Golf Club. The Golf Club provides a light dinner ($12) and cash bar, with a cocktail reception before each meeting begins. After dinner, an introduction period allows newcomers to introduce themselves and their businesses. This is followed by a speaker who typically focuses on a topic of local interest which promotes business here and overseas. Presenters have included travel expert Ange Wallace from Wallace Pierson Travel, Todd Linder from Jacksonville Aviation Authority, architect John Cotner, author Ian Murray, and many more. Elizabeth Rawson is an active member who handles many of EABC’s Left to right: Martin Wilson, Brian Hennin, Tim Burningham, Susanna Theo, social activities. Throughout the year with her help, Elizabeth Rawson, Pierre Guite, Martin Wilson, Shaun Harrell & Robyn Murray the club hosts numerous events, such as a Petanque handles their communications, are American-born. “Americans tournament, Pub Nights, a visit to White Oak Conservation have a strong interest in Europe, especially those who travel,” Center, and even a Trivia Night. says Burningham. “Our Club is all about building friendships Anyone is welcome to join the EABC, and membership and connections with people from all over the globe.” is free. “We always played to the rule to be an open network “Our first meeting was held at the Chamber of Commerce, and voted against a formal membership with fees from the and we counted more than 10 attendees,” says Albrecht. “The beginning,” says Albrecht. “People interested in joining are initial response was very positive, and after eight years and welcome to come to a meeting and see what we’re all about.” over 80 successful meetings, the club continues to flourish. tracing our

roots

Celebrating 25 years of education and research, the Amelia Island Genealogical Society teams with the Fernandina Beach Library to help local residents explore their roots. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY SHERRY CARTER

W

hen Alex Haley wrote his first novel, Roots: The Saga of an American Family, he created a cultural sensation. People from around the country clamored to investigate their own “roots,” and genealogy became a mainstream phenomenon. Today, with websites, databases, cemetery records, and even DNA testing available worldwide, anyone interested in their family history has plenty of resources. Organized in September 1992 with the mission statement, “Dedicated to Preserving the Past Through Education Research & Promotion of Family Search,” the Amelia Island Genealogical Society has been assisting local residents find out more about their family histories for years. By partnering with the Fernandina Beach Library, the AIGS’s 150 members take part in workshops and listen to presentations on a variety of genealogical topics to increase their knowledge. “We also have other unique programs, including tours of the old cemeteries in the area, which we sponsor periodically,” says AIGS President Dawn Bostwick. “The society maintains a large collection of genealogy material at the Fernandina Library for public use, along with computer databases, scanners, and also issues of Your Genealogy Today, Family Tree Magazine, and Internet Genealogy.” A newly added forum section enhances member-tomember collaboration. If you’re new to genealogy, or would like to brush up on research skills, Bostwick suggests you enroll in their annual beginner class, or join a project to increase 55 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

your knowledge of the area. AIGS’s meetings are held at the library on the second Tuesday of each month, and the public is welcome to attend. On Saturday, April 21, the AIGS will feature George G. Morgan as guest speaker at its 25th Anniversary Genealogy Seminar. This event was originally planned for September 9, 2017, but had to be rescheduled because of Hurricane Irma.

Morgan is president of Aha! Seminars, Inc. and an internationally recognized genealogy expert who gives seminars in the U.S., Canada, England, on cruise ships, and through webinars. He is a prolific, award-winning author of hundreds of articles for magazines, journals, newsletters, genealogical publications, and at online sites internationally. He has won writing awards from the Association of APRIL 2018

COURTESY SOUTHERN LIVING PLANT COLLECTION

in the garden Solar Flare Azalea

amazing azaleas With spring colors in full bloom now, the vibrant colors of the new native azaleas Solar Flare and Solar Grow will add big splashes of color to your April landscape. BY BETTY MORRELL

A

pril is really a magical time of the year. Plants and flowers dormant during the cold months have emerged. New plants arriving at the nurseries will freshen up your garden with new bright colors and plants of all shapes and sizes. I love adding to the garden. A new look encourages me to get out and weed, as this is the time of year when dormant stray seeds are pushing their way into your bed, and most of them are weeds. I want to mention another new strain of Podocarpus that I like called Roman Candle. The new growth on this shrub is white and green and resembles a Roman Candle. It’s very pretty, but my favorite new Podocarpus is still Mood Ring, which I wrote about last month. Both of these new Podocarpus grow 10 15 ft. high and 4 - 6 ft. wide. Grow it in full sun to part-shade. It’s worth having in your landscape. When I’m at the annual Florida Growers Association trade show, I like to see what’s new in the Native Plants area. This year, I was surprised and pleased to find some vivid colors in the new additions to the Sunbow series of Native

Azaleas. These earlier-blooming azaleas, with larger, more colorful blooms, are called Solar Flare and Solar Glow. Both of these plants have patents pending. Solar Flare has a pretty yellow singleform bloom with shades of orange, and it has a sweet honey-suckle-like fragrance that attracts butterflies. These new Azaleas go dormant during the winter, but they will set buds on the tips of their branches. Don’t trim these bushes while dormant or you will lose the new crop of blooms in spring. Trim and shape after the burst of blooms in spring. The second Azalea bush which really caught my eye is called Solar Glow. It’s great for light shade or even sunnier locations. Solar Glow sports blooms of “glowing” orange-red with

varying shades of yellow in spring. Use as an accent plant or in a mass planting. It grows 6 - 8 ft. high and 4 - 5 ft. wide. Of all the Sunbow series, the Solar Flare and Solar Glow azaleas are more heat-loving and disease-resistant varieties. These plants are from Southern Living, and they love acidic soil and acidic fertilizer; fertilize them in spring after they bloom. You will enjoy having these lovely native plants in your garden or landscape. Around the corner from the native plants was a very pretty little Holly called Low Rider. This plant is also from Southern Living. This Holly grows 3 - 4 in height and width. It sports very small deep green leaves with a tight growth habit, making it perfect for topiaries, borders, containers, or a short hedge. It can be grown in full sun to part-shade, and it tolerates most native soils. These are acid-loving plants, so be sure to use a fertilizer that meets their needs, same as you use on your azaleas. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

Wicked BAO With authentic Asian family recipes, noodle bowls, and delicious small plates, Wicked BAO is a great new downtown restaurant with a fun and comfortable atmosphere. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

I

f you were wondering where locals with a taste for edible adventure are hanging out these days, this is the place: Wicked BAO, the new restaurant in downtown Fernandina Beach. Recently, I dropped by on a solo mission, where I was met at the door by friendly faces and soon found owner Nathalie Wu laughing with friends and customers near the bar. This year on New Year’s Day, I had the opportunity suit up and spend the day with the kitchen crew in the heart of the house, seeing all the wonderful products and the care that goes into each dish. I had the distinct privilege to work with

Nathalie’s mother, Doris, who has since gone home to Taiwan. Thanks to Doris’s hospitality, I got to try nearly everything on the menu. On this trip, I was hoping to enjoy some of my favorites and cover some ground I had missed. Walking through the restaurant feels fun. The atmosphere is alive, and the lingering scent of Five-Spice and authenticity draws you in. After hugs and hellos, I found a spot at the bar and saw my friend, gourmet, and lifetime local Lisa Langshaw smiling at me. As we caught up, I ordered a Lucky Buddha 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

beer and two small plates, Grilled Octopus and Pork Belly Bao. Octopus has popped up on more than one menu in town, and I couldn’t be happier. Dusted with a blend of Asian seasonings and spices, the octopus was grilled tender with crisp edges and was bursting with flavor. A bao is a steamed pillow of bread filled with braised meats, pickles, and condiments. Bao is pronounced like “bow your head and pray you don’t have to share.” The Pork Belly Bao is filled with succulent braised pork, pickled mustard greens, cilantro, and dusted with powdered peanuts. This thing is worth the trip all by itself, but of course I didn’t stop there. After asking Nathalie what I should try, she suggested Kimchi Fried Rice. If you are late to the kimchi craze or afraid to give it a go, this dish is a great way to dive in. Made in-house, the kimchi is squeezed and sautéed with shaved ribeye and topped with an egg. This treatment tends to mellow some of the powerful flavors associated with the fermented condiment and blow minds on the first bite. I should have stopped there, but the only thing left on the menu I hadn’t tried were the Chongqing Chicken Wings. The wings are dry rubbed with a mixture of ground spices and chili peppers. These wings are sneaky, disguising themselves as mild when you begin, and intensifying as you indulge in their eye-watering awesomeness. My taste buds now on the defensive, I looked forward to sweet relief with an ice cream mochi. Mochi is traditionally a colorful rice cake, but here it is stretched and formed around a ball of ice cream flavored with red bean or green tea. Do not leave the building without trying one. Or both. You can’t go wrong here. Wicked BAO is located at 232 North 2nd St. and open Monday - Saturday from 4-9pm. Stop in for the drink specials and a $5 Happy Hour menu Monday - Thursday from 4 - 6pm. a visit to

Washington Oaks BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY KAREN MILLER AND TROY LAIR

W

alkin’ Nassau is a local Amelia Island walking club with bi-monthly walks and events that are open to the public. My friends, Jane and Doug Bailey, have been part of the group for many years, and recently they invited me and my beau, Troy, to come along with them on a Saturday walk to Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, just south of St. Augustine in Palm Coast. I was a little surprised that I had never heard of this park before, as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is practically in our backyard! Washington Oaks is formerly the Owen D. and Louise P. Young estate, owned by the Youngs in the 1930s. As was common with wealthy Northerners in those days, the couple themselves designed the gardens and their home, which they built on high ground overlooking the Matanzas River, using it as their winter estate. Owen Young, a man from humble beginnings who was brought up on a farm in New York State, established a distinguished career as chairman of General Electric and founder of RCA. In 1929, Time Magazine named him its “Man of the Year.” Today, the state park offers a self guided walking tour throughout the estate that encompasses the Young’s home, their formal gardens, a greenhouse, and citrus grove. Mrs. Young was a talented gardener, who designed the ornamental gardens and planted the fruit orchards at Washington Oaks. Her favorite plants were azaleas, camellias, orchids, and citrus, all of which remain in the gardens today. After Mr. Young died, she donated 76 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

the land to the Florida Park Service, specifying that they be maintained for the enjoyment of the public. The perimeter of the park was heavily damaged by hurricanes last year, but the estate and gardens are still in beautiful condition, and very well-kept. In addition to the Young home, or “river cottage,” as they called it, there’s an art studio that was constructed for Mrs. Young’s daughter, Virginia Powis Brown, a talented artist. A log building on the property was used as Mr. Young’s office, and a caretaker’s residence boasts a smokehouse used to prepare wild hogs, venison, and mullet for the Young’s barbecue picnics. Our walk took us around the outside of the estate, and then through the gardens and citrus grove, a walk of about three miles. The heart of the park consists of a coastal scrub community that transitions into lush hammock, where towering live oaks, hickory, and magnolia trees offer welcome shade. Bordering the hammock are the scenic tidal marshes of the Matanzas River. The walk explores historically significant features of the Young property, and an unexpected treat was a set of coquina columns, which stood alongside the original Highway A1A and served as the entrance gate to the estate. In 1955, A1A was rerouted at the request of Mr. Young. Today, the columns serve as the gateway to the Washington Oaks Historic District.
