After the war, a large African-American community took root on Amelia Island, adding their distinctive thread to the many threads that make up our “Isle of Eight Flags” tapestry.

Starting in March, the American Beach Community Center began hosting on the second Saturday of the month an African Arts & Culture Marketplace featuring art, food, vendors, games, music, and movies. They will break for the summer in June and July, but it has been a fun place to gather on a Saturday afternoon over the last few months, and it got us thinking more about the history of African Americans on Amelia Island.

As Karen Miller writes in this month’s cover story, African Americans are one group that did not come to Amelia Island by choice. Since Jean Ribault set foot here in 1562, encountering the native Timucuans, people have come to these shores for many reasons, from strategic or military to political and financial. Ribault and the French were followed by the Spanish, the English, pirates and scoundrels, fishermen, Confederate soldiers and Union soldiers, then wave after wave of visitors following the sun, many of whom chose to stay. But the African slaves brought to these shores had no choice. They came in chains to do back-breaking work that created wealth for others on local plantations. Eventually, they won their freedom, with many fighting for it in the Union army, some stationed here at Fort Clinch. A freedman’s school was opened in Fernandina after the war, and a large African-American community took root on Amelia Island, adding their distinctive thread to the many disparate threads that make up our “Isle of Eight Flags” tapestry.

But after the euphoria of emancipation, Jim Crow reared its ugly head. African Americans here and around the South endured another period of senseless discrimination, but there were bright spots nonetheless. One of those was Peck High School, one of the oldest African American high schools in Florida and a cornerstone of the African American community here. Another source of pride, and an integral part of Amelia Island’s varied history, was American Beach, a place where African Americans could vacation and own beach homes in an era when blacks were denied entry to most public beaches in Florida.

American Beach was a thriving community from its founding in 1935, and one of its icons was MaVynee Betsch, “The Beach Lady,” who was a tireless advocate for recognizing American Beach as an historical landmark. Today we celebrate African American culture at the monthly marketplace, and we offer this month’s cover story to provide a fuller account of the experience of African Americans on Amelia Island.

A

melia Island is a community built by diverse peoples. Since the early 18th century, the island has seen eight different flags flown over it throughout its history, earning it the well-deserved nickname “the Isle of Eight Flags.” Since the French first reached these shores to encounter the native Timucuans, they have been followed by the Spanish, the English, pirates and bootleggers, adventurers, fisherman and growers, Confederate soldiers, Union troops, Victorianera tourists, 20th-century snowbirds, and many others drawn to our warm climate and unspoiled beaches.

In addition to the waves of newcomers, Fernandina was also blessed with a natural deepwater harbor, making it a busy port and a crossroads for ships from around the globe. According to Gino Litrico, patriarch of an old local fishing family and president of the former Trigger-Net Company, “When you were down at the docks, there were languages spoken from all over the world. In Fernandina Beach, we have people from many races, cultures, and walks of life. That’s what makes our island so special.”

However, one group of people did not come to these shores by choice. Instead, they were ripped from their African communities against their will, split off from their families and everything they knew, and shipped across the ocean in horrific conditions to be sold as slaves to America.

“When Thomas Jefferson outlawed the importation of slaves in 1807, New England slaving families reregistered their ships under the Spanish flag and brought their cargos to Florida to be smuggled across the border into Georgia,” states writer and journalist Russ Rymer in his book, American Beach: A Saga of Race, Wealth, and Memory.

“Fernandina’s traffic in ‘new’ Africans became intense—its harbor sometimes hosted three hundred square-riggers at a time.”

Even though African-Americans didn’t come here by choice, they have contributed mightily to the history and culture of Amelia Island, and to our understanding of ourselves, helping us forge our unique community tapestry out of many disparate threads. Here is a look at part of their story on Amelia Island.

KINGSLEY PLANTATION During the 18th and 19th centuries, many people came to Florida. Some sought to make their fortunes by obtaining land and establishing plantations. Others were forced to come to Florida to work on those plantations, their labor providing wealth to the people who owned them. Some of the enslaved would later become free landowners, struggling to keep their footing in a dangerous time of shifting alliances and politics. All of these people played a part in the history of Kingsley Plantation.

Among those striving for freedom and security in Spanish Florida was Anna Kingsley. Anna was the African wife of plantation owner Zephaniah Kingsley. At an early age, she survived the Middle Passage and dehumanizing slave markets to become the property of Kingsley. After manumission by her husband, Anna became a landowner and slaveholder. She raised her four children while managing a plantation that utilized African slave labor. She survived brutal changes in race policies and social attitudes brought by successive governments in Florida, and her survival demanded difficult, often dangerous, choices. With an enslaved work force of about 60, the Fort 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

George plantation produced Sea Island cotton, citrus, sugar cane, and corn.

“Florida’s Spanish colonists encouraged and legally sanctioned interracial marriage,” Rymer goes on to say in his book. “There were numbers of freed blacks in the area, and some of them owned plantations and slaves, and found acceptance in white society.”

COLORED TROOPS AT FORT CLINCH On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation: “All persons held as slaves within any States…in rebellion against the United States,” it declared, “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” It also declared that “such persons (that is, African-American men) of suitable condition will be received into the armed service of the United States.” For the first time, black soldiers could fight for the U.S. Army.

The First South Carolina Volunteers was a Union Army regiment during the Civil War which was composed of escaped slaves from South Carolina and Florida. It was one of the first black regiments in the Union Army, and it served time at Fort JUNE 2018

Clinch. “This unit received a lot of attention under the leadership of Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a supporter of John Brown,” says Frank Ofeldt, Fort Clinch State Park historian. “The regiment participated in a military expedition from Beaufort up the St. Marys River. Eventually, the designation of the regiment changed to the 33rd U.S. Colored Troops on February 8, 1864.”

Even as they fought to end slavery in the Confederacy, African-American Union soldiers were fighting against another injustice as well. The U.S. Army paid black soldiers $10 a week (minus a clothing allowance, in some cases), while white soldiers got $3 more (plus a clothing allowance, in some cases).

Congress passed a bill authorizing equal pay for black and white soldiers in 1864.

By the time the war ended in 1865, about 180,000 black men had served as soldiers in the U.S. Army. This was about 10 percent of the total Union fighting force. Most, about 90,000, were former or “contraband” slaves from the Confederate states.

About half of the rest were from the loyal border states, and the rest were free blacks from the North. Forty thousand black 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

soldiers died in the war: 10,000 in battle and 30,000 from illness or infection.

AMERICAN BEACH: A RAY OF HOPE FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS American Beach was founded in 1935 by one of Florida’s first black millionaires, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, and the Pension Bureau of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company during his presidency. The plan was for his employees to have a place to vacation and own homes for their families by the shore.

Throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, summers at American Beach were busy with families, churches and children.

The beach included hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs, as well as homes and other businesses. American Beach played host to numerous celebrities during this period, including Zora Neale Hurston, Billie Daniels, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Hank Aaron, Joe Louis, and many more. James Brown was actually turned away from performing outside Evans’ Rendezvous, a nightclub on the beach.

Marsha Dean Phelts remembers fondly her family’s retreat on American Beach the first two weeks in July each year and writes of her experience in her book, An American Beach for African Americans. “For us, going to American Beach was the equivalent of going to Disney World today, in terms of popularity and prestige,” she writes. “It was a place where dreams came true just by being there, the place for family gatherings or community get-togethers, the place to see and gape at the prominent personalities of the community.” Phelts and her brothers, Charles and Kenneth, enjoyed crabbing, fishing, and collecting shells during their two-week vacation.

“At low tide, we delighted by filling our sieves with donax, tiny coquina clams, easy to gather by the thousands as they lay on top of the sand—purple, orange, blue, yellow, pink, and white,” she writes. “After slurping bowls of donax broth, we used the shells to create mosaics on driftwood or poster board to take back home.”

In 1964, American Beach was hit hard by Hurricane Dora, and many homes and buildings were destroyed. The passage of the Civil Rights Act that same year desegregated the 16 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

beaches of Florida, and American Beach became a less and less popular vacation destination as more African Americans from Jacksonville turned to beaches closer to their homes.

THE LEGACY OF THE BEACH LADY MaVynee Betsch, known to locals as the Beach Lady, returned from a long career as an opera singer to American Beach in 1977 to fight for its preservation. For years, she planted trees along Lewis Street, offered historical tours of the beach, and fought to raise public awareness of the beach and its struggle until her death September 2005. She wanted to make American Beach a monument to black Americans’ determination to overcome the obstacles of the Jim Crow era. Since January 2001, American Beach has been listed as a historic site by the National Register of Historic Places.

Betsch was born in Jacksonville, Florida, into one of the preeminent black families in the South. Her parents were Mary and John Betsch, and she was the great-granddaughter of Abraham Lincoln Lewis and Mary Kingsley Sammis, the great-granddaughter of Zephaniah and Anna Kingsley. She JUNE 2018

was educated at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, and after earning her bachelor’s degree in 1955, she moved to Europe, where she became an opera singer.

Upon her return to American Beach, the Beach Lady made fast friends and instant enemies as she fought for the preservation of her beloved American Beach. “Crackers lounging in front of the ammunition store and rednecks passing in pickups trucks would give her a nod or a wave or stop to tell her they did or didn’t agree with her most recent letter to the editor,” writes Rymer. “They called her MaVynee or Miss Betsch, or Beach Lady. She would yell back, ‘Hey! Hey!’ and give them a wave or thumbs up, and a score of bracelets would ripple and chime on her forearm.” The Beach Lady gave her life savings, some $750,000, to sixty environmental organizations and causes, ten of which she was a lifetime member.

PECK HIGH SCHOOL AND THE PECK CENTER The groundwork for Peck High School began in 1880, when a group led by Henry B. Delaney petitioned for an African-American school in Fernandina. In 1885, a fourroom building known as Colored School No. 1 opened 18 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

at Atlantic Avenue and 11th Street. Moses H. Payne, a Howard University graduate, became the first principal and teacher that same year. William H. Peck, also a Howard graduate, joined Payne in Fernandina in 1887, and served as assistant principal.

Following Payne’s death in 1888, Peck was promoted to principal, a position he held until 1931. Professor Peck developed the high school’s curriculum and graduated its first class in 1891. In 1909, a four-acre parcel was purchased on South 10th Street to build a larger school.

Peck tenaciously gathered support from within the community and from the Rosenwald Foundation, a program for African-American school construction funded by Julius Rosenwald of Sears, Roebuck & Co. In 1911, the school was renamed in Peck’s honor. Peck High School was completed in 1927, serving grades 1-12. Peck, who died in 1950 and is buried at Bosque Bello Cemetery, was widely respected in the community and recognized in the state’s Great Floridians 2000 program.

As one of the oldest African American high schools in the state, Peck High School was the center of the African American community and a source of pride. Used for classes in the day, JUNE 2018

the school served as a meeting place for community groups in the evening. In later years, adult education and industrial skills were also offered.

Teachers were an integral part of the fabric of the community and embraced their roles with great pride and commitment, understanding that they were educating students, families, and a community. When schools in Fernandina were desegregated in 1969, Peck was closed. Students were integrated into other schools, and by 1976, the building was vacant.

Recognizing the impact the deteriorating building had on the spirit of an entire community, a diverse group including Ellie Colburn, Elmo Myers, Charles Albert, and Willie Mae Ashley began the campaign to save Peck High.

In the 1990s, state grants and the City of Fernandina Beach funded its restoration, and it reopened as the Peck Center.

The center houses non-profit groups, city offices, and hosts recreational activities and special events, making it possible for Peck to celebrate its past while continuing to serve the community. The Peck High School building serves as a 20 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

significant component of the story of African-American heritage in Fernandina Beach.

The African American community of Amelia Island celebrates its heritage each month with an African Arts & Culture Marketplace on the second Saturday of each month at the American Beach Museum, featuring cultural arts vendors, food vendors, yoga and meditation sessions, fun-filled games, music, movies, and more.

The American Beach Museum on Amelia Island remembers the historic African American journey of vision, struggle, joy, and triumph, and celebrates the preservation of this historic site. Photographs, text, artifacts, videography, and a unique display on the legacy of MaVynee Oshun Betsch, “The Beach Lady,” recount the beach’s history and preservation. SOUNDS ON CENTRE CONCERTS RETURN WITH FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Sounds on Centre has kicked off an exciting season of free family-friendly concerts with its first two events of the year: Band on the Run on April 6, and the Decades Band after the Shrimp Festival Parade on May 3.

On the first Friday of each month through October, Sounds on Centre will be presented at the intersection of Centre and 2nd streets in downtown Fernandina Beach. All shows are held from 6 to 8 p.m., and concert goers are encouraged to bring chairs and come early for the best seating.

Sounds on Centre T-shirts will be available for purchase, and raffle drawings will be held throughout the event each month, with prizes donated by local businesses and retailers. Proceeds go to advertising efforts of the organization.

Sounds on Centre’s upcoming concerts include rock, soul, blues, and country with The Bluff 5 Band on June 1; classic rock and beyond by the Honey Badgers on July 6; indie rock and alternative by Flipturn on August 3, music for the ages

Les DeMerle, world-renowned drummer and Artistic Director of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, in conjunction with Arts Alive Nassau, Inc., is hosting a Drums & Rhythm Summer Camp during the month of July. This exciting camp for ages 9 and up is designed to develop rhythm and enhance musical skills in drummers and percussionists, as well as students of any musical instrument. Subjects include the correct way to hold drumsticks, creating a groove with a steady beat, and learning drum rudiments. Students will also participate in exciting drum and rhythm jam sessions.

DeMerle has appeared with musical greats such as Lionel Hampton, Harry James, Lou Rawls, and more. He and his wife, vocalist Bonnie Eisele DeMerle, continue to perform at concerts, festivals, and cruises.

Drums & Rhythm Summer Camp will be held July 9-11 and July 16-18, Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon daily, for a total of six sessions. Cost is $120. Students will require a drum pad and one pair of drumsticks, which can be purchased at the first class. Camp will be held at New Vision Congregational Church, 96072 Chester Road in Yulee. BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER AT THE FERNANDINA BEACH PARKS AND RECREATION POOLS In addition to the Atlantic Ocean, you can stay cool this summer at the Fernandina Beach Parks and Recreation department’s two swimming pools that are open to the public, both of which feature a wide variety of aquatic programs and family swim times all summer long. The Atlantic Recreation Center, located at 2500 Atlantic Recreation Center, features a year-round outdoor pool and kiddie pool, and offers swimming lessons, water aerobic classes, and is used in the evenings by local swim teams. The pool is heated during the cooler months and is handicapped accessible.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Center pool, located at 516 South 19th Street, is only open during the summer months, with a variety of aquatic programs. Cost for both pools is $3 per day for city residents and $5 per day for non-residents, with one-month and four-month passes available. Team Fernandina Stingrays is the local youth swim team and it is open to youngsters between the ages of four and eighteen who are interested in competitive swimming. hen Otis Lee was working for his neighbor’s pool company in Kingsland, Georgia, the pair visited a pool and spa show in Orlando to check out the latest pool equipment. After hours of walking around the show, the two friends collapsed into a pair of patio chairs. They were then approached by a wholesale rep who suggested Otis open his own patio store. “It’s funny how things happen,” laughs Otis.

“There was no patio or outdoor furniture store in Kingsland or the surrounding area. It made perfect sense.” Soon after, Otis opened The Patio Store at 1621 Highway 40 E, and after 10 years, the store is a smashing success.

Otis runs the store by himself—he’s both salesman and deliveryman. His wife, Susan, helps when needed, but Otis is a one-man show. “The store keeps me busy, but I love what I do,” says Otis. “Our medium- to high-end inventory and wide choice of fabrics and designs mean my customers have the world at their fingertips when it comes to outdoor furniture.”

With sailors, power boaters, and even non-boat owners, the Amelia Island Sailing Club is a social club that shares the joy of sailing through courses, regattas, and friendship.

“W

e are a social club with a boating problem,” laughs Tom Maguire, the current Commodore of the Amelia Island Sailing Club. For Tom, as with many members of the club, the lure of open water is strong.

The Amelia Island Sailing Club currently has about 100 members, which includes sailors, power boaters, and even nonboat owners who are interested in sailing or boating. Many of the members are transplants to the Amelia Island area, who are drawn to the club by their love of sailing and the camaraderie among the members.

Commodore Maguire and his wife, Jan, moved to Fernandina Beach in 2015 and joined the club the same year.

They brought their sailboat down from Virginia and now regularly compete in local regattas. Graeme and Nicola Nichol —originally from South Africa, but who came to Amelia Island with their sail boat by way of New Jersey—credit the club for introducing them to a number of good friends on Amelia Island. The couple, long-time sailboat racers and cruisers, joined the club as soon as they moved to the area in 2004.

“We love being involved in the sailing community here,” says Nicola. “It was really a great way to meet new folks.” A past Commodore, John Lohr, retired to Fernandina Beach from Denver. John and his wife, Joan, joined AISC right away, even though they didn’t own a sailboat. The Lohrs do, however, own a powerboat and they have long loved all things to do with water.

They are active members. “We loved the fact that you could get involved in such a great local activity so easily,” says John.

One of the goals of the club is to encourage an interest in sailing. The club has held “learn how to sail” mini-courses, and they have sponsored “A Day on A Sailboat” to encourage community members to get involved in the sailing world.

The club also sponsors several races, or “regattas,” each year and generally promotes the interest in boating in the area.

Currently, the club is involved in “river sampling,” working with the St. Marys River riverkeeper to determine the health of the river and the sound. Boat owners and members sign up to participate in “sampling” days on the first Wednesday of each month.

The club was founded in the late 1970s, and it is run by an elected leadership, which includes a Commodore or

club President, a Vice Commodore, a Secretary, and a Treasurer in its slate of officers. Various committee chairs do the “landside” work of hosting the monthly potluck dinner, setting up the cruises and regattas, publishing the newsletter, managing the membership, and planning the yearly parties.

Members of the club try to remain abreast of conditions affecting boaters in the Amelia Island area. For example, several years ago, when the city decided to lay out a “mooring field” at the downtown marina where sailboats could anchor, the club was invited to review the proposals and to have input on the layout of the field and the type of mooring balls used.

supporting success With an important fundraising milestone reached, the Fernandina Beach High School Foundation makes an impact in the classroom in a million ways.

“I

t doesn’t seem like over 30 years ago that a group of us parents decided to start an endowment for the high school,” reflects Chris Bryan, a founding board member of the Fernandina Beach High School Foundation. “Bill and I hosted a dinner at our home for potential donors. Neil Blalock was lined up to speak about our goal, which I thought was $100,000. He surprised me and announced that our goal was $1,000,000, and I remember thinking, ‘wow!’”

Fast forward to 2018, and now we’re all saying, “wow” and offering well-deserved congratulations to the FBHS Foundation, which reached their $1,000,000 goal this year.

“Reaching $1 million in the endowment ensures that the school will always have supplemental funds to fill the gaps between the needs of the school and the limited available public funds,” explains incoming Foundation President Kassy Sjuggerud.

The Foundation is committed to promoting academic excellence for all students and does so through two avenues ‚the endowment fund and the annual operations fund. The endowment is left untouched, with part of its interest supplying the operating fund. However, having reached the endowment goal, Kassy explained that next year the Foundation will be able 43 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

to give even more to meet the mission of impacting the FBHS education experience for as many students as possible.

Most of the classroom support comes in the form of minigrants, which teachers apply for to meet specific academic needs. Over the past four years, an average of $25,000 in grants has been awarded annually. In the just-completed school year, $1,400 was granted to the science department for lab equipment; $1,600 to the physical education department for CPR certification for students; $1,000 for math software and manipulatives; $3,500 in supplemental books for the English department; and another $3,000 for art supplies, which will help make an art program possible.

Media Specialist Evelyn French described how the FBHS Foundation grant supports reading annually. “I receive a grant to order the Florida Teens Read award-winning books. My students look forward to getting the top 10 teen books every year.”

“There certainly is a tangible impact in the classroom when the books and computers show up,” says English teacher Joe Monaghan. “But there is an intangible impact which is equally important when parents and community leaders show up in support of our children again and again. To continue its efforts, the FBHS Foundation organizes annual fundraisers. In February each year, the Foundation Feast is an evening of fun featuring oysters and delicious cuisine prepared by the FBHS culinary program. New to the roster of fundraising events is Trivia Night. The first night was held in April, and it was such a success—a complete sell-out— that another is planned for September.

“We had so much fun together at the Feast that we wanted to get together again. Trivia Night is an informal, affordable chance to do just that, as well as a means to raise funds and inform the community about the Foundation and what we do,” says volunteer Ashley Strain. “Teams of eight join at a table and compete against the other tables with the questions by Trivia 30 to determine a winner. We serve beer, wine, snacks, and desserts, and it’s a great night for parents and community members to support our school!”

The Lewis-Tabby House

C

ertainly one of the most distinctive great homes in Fernandina’s Historic District, the unique tabby house is a favorite of photographers and painters alike. The house occupies one of the most interesting intersections in the Historic District. At one time, a bed & breakfast inn occupied three of the corners at the intersection, with the Lewis-Tabby House the only exception. The detailed trim on the galleries were typical of the intricate detail that Robert Sands Schuyler included in his architectural designs. Similar detailing can be seen in the Williams House and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

The unusual house is constructed of tabby, and it is the only house of its kind built in the late nineteenth century and the only tabby house remaining on the island. It was unusual to use this construction technique at the time it was built.

The method of construction is simple—a mixture of Portland cement and oyster shells is poured into molds to create the walls of a house. Tabby is dependent on an abundance of oyster shells. Thanks to the Indian tribes that occupied the coast of Florida, many middens of oyster shells were left for later generations to use in the fabrication of tabby houses.

A midden is made up of the trash left by civilizations that have gone before us. Great mounds of oyster shells can be

found in and around Amelia Island, Cumberland Island, and the Talbot Islands to the south. Locally found oyster shells were burned in kilns and open pits, and then pounded into powered lime. The powdered lime was then mixed with whole oyster and clam shells, clean sand, and fresh water, which were formed into bricks or poured into wooden frameworks to create walls or foundations. You can see the horizontal lines that indicate the individual sections of wall. It took three years to build the house. Tabby was also used to make the floor. The cement wall and simple fencing was built to keep out the local free-range animals.

The builder of the house, Charles Lewis, came from Massachusetts in 1867. He was engaged in the milling and merchandise business. He was the land commissioner for the Florida Land and Improvement Company, the Florida Transit and Peninsular Railroad Company, and the Florida Town Improvement Company—the largest holder of real estate in Fernandina at the time. He was a partner in the purchase of the Florida Mirror in 1884. In 1900, he was listed as postmaster in a Fernandina directory.

The house has had many lives. It was abandoned, badly burned in a fire, and barely survived. It remains today thanks to its current owners, who are committed preservationists.

burgeoning blossoms As June’s warm weather arrives, add abundant summer color to your landscape with Spider’s Web, Mint Julip, Lucky Leprechaun, and new varieties of Dianthus.

une is not only a popular month for weddings, but it is also the month when gardens are manicured, flowers are abundant, and iced tea is poured for pure refreshment. Yes, summer is officially here!

Summer is the time as well to fill in those spaces in your landscape that need a new plant or two. How about a new Fatsia for your part-sun, mostly shade garden? This Fatsia is called Spider’s Web, also known as Japanese Aralia. Spider’s Web has a compact growing habit, is disease and pest resistant, and heat and cold tolerant. Its foliage changes color each season as it ages. The large white variegated palmate leaves are speckled and dotted, giving the appearance of a Spider’s Web, hence its name. This spectacular plant definitely deserves a spot in your garden.

Spider’s Web is a southern landscape shrub that loves deep shade. It is beautiful in mass plantings, container plantings, in a rock garden, water garden, or woodland garden. If you don’t already have a hardy tropical garden, you could start with this plant and add other eye-catching tropicals.

TIP OF T HE M O N T H If your Azaleas have stopped blooming, now is the time to fertilize them with an acid fertilizer. Feed Azaleas again in early fall for a beautiful show of flowers in the spring.

Amophophallus corrugatus is a really odd, interesting Lily that would be wonderful in your shade tropical garden. It is a native of China/Thailand called Mint Julep. It grows a 4-foot tall olive green stalk, speckled brown, topped with typical palm leaf-shaped green foliage. When it is large enough to flower, the solitary 3-foot flower stalk is topped with a hooded flower composed of a gray spathe, speckled brown outside and creamy white inside, with a winered base and contrasting wrinkled white phallic spadix. This new Lily makes a great conversation piece as a rare treasure in your garden; it almost looks like a giant Jack in the Pulpit!

You don’t have to be Irish to have a Leprechaun in your garden, but you do need a spot for this one. Lucky

Leprechaun Cornus is an extremely free-flowering shrub. The abundance of white blooms contrasts nicely with the dark green foliage. Lucky is compact in nature, and a plethora of blooms makes it a nice addition to the garden. This beauty can grow to 13 feet and spread 4 to 5 feet in width. Besides being an evergreen, it is resistant to mildew.

Lucky grows in full sun and makes a great backdrop for Knock Out Roses, Plumbago, or any other shorter variety of shrubs with brightly colored flowers.

While walking through a garden center recently, I was attracted by an array of very colorful flowers. They were the old reliable Dianthus, a perennial that fits anywhere in your garden.

There are many new varieties and colors now available and they would make a beautiful border. These new colors are the Mountain Frost series in shades of pink, white, silver, rose, and speckled.

Plant some of these little wonders to brighten up your garden!

I

n the mid-1990s, Ken Byrns was a Chicago-based pilot for American Airlines who commuted from his home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When Ken and his wife, Laurie, realized they no longer liked the long Michigan winters, they started looking for a new base out of which Ken could fly.

The couple looked at Raleigh and Wilmington, North Carolina. American also flies out of Miami, but Ken and Laurie didn’t want to live in Miami or Tampa, so they headed to North Florida. Once she saw Fernandina Beach, says Laurie, she knew this was the place they would live. Laurie has always loved the beach, calling it “a very calming influence.” Ken, Laurie, and their two children first moved to Beach Walk, then to Ocean Oaks, where they built a home.

In 2015, the couple bought a 100-foot-wide, 1.1 acre lot on the tidal marsh near Amelia City, which had a small,

1960s home on it. The house required too much work to make it livable, so Ken and Laurie began planning their dream home. Laurie knew she wanted a comfortable home that would complement their “laid back” lifestyle, and she knew she wanted a horizon-tohorizon view of the marsh. She and Ken sketched out their plans, and Ken loaded them into a CAD program. In April 2016, the couple broke ground.

The 3,475-square-foot coastal cottage sits on the back of the lot on a circular driveway. The front door opens into an expansive living room,

dining room, and kitchen area with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing a 270-degree view of the marsh. “It is an ever-changing art piece,” says Laurie, referring to the view. “We see dolphins and manatees, and have seen a swimming gator pass by.” Ken’s plans for the wall-to-wall windows included motorized shades that operate in pairs to take advantage of the full western sun.

Ken and Laurie designed the screened porch at a forty-five degree angle off the living room so that nothing would impede the spectacular view. The porch is really an outdoor living and

dining room, with a fireplace with a comfortable sofa and chairs at one end and a dining table for al fresco meals at the other.

Using soft, beachy colors throughout, the couple designed the interior themselves. A custom-made wall unit graces the living room, while the dining room features a table that seats up to ten people. The kitchen cabinets were designed and installed by Mike Gleason of Creative Cabinets. The drawers have auto-closers, and the top shelf of each cabinet has a glass front, revealing

beautiful pieces from their collection of sea-colored pottery and glass.

The beachy colors are used again in the luminous tile backsplash over the gas range. The flooring in the great room is 24” by 24” Italian porcelain tile, while a large island separates the kitchen from the dining room. Four rattan stools make the island a favorite eat-in location, while a “hidden” pantry runs behind the back wall of the kitchen.

day. Two comfortable bedrooms— each with a private bath—and a sitting area now provide a lovely guest wing.

One of the baths has a shower that can accommodate a wheelchair or a walker.

The master bedroom and bath are on the south side of the house, using the same muted, beachy colors to create a serene and calming space. An armoire that Laurie refinished in a distressed blue-gray color holds favorite artifacts.

French doors open to the screen porch and provide another vantage point on the marsh. The master bath has two separate vanities and sinks, and a shower with no threshold as well.

Down the hallway from the master bedroom is the attached garage and another bedroom up a small staircase.

“This is a bonus,” says Laurie. A comfortable queen-sized bed, a small bath, and a morning coffee bar make a cozy retreat.

Although the large screened porch serves as the outdoor living room, a lovely terrace lies between the house and the Amelia River, where Adirondack chairs and a large fire-pit provide another comfortable spot to enjoy a glass of wine on cool, starry evenings. Without a doubt, the Byrns family has perfected their “laid back” island lifestyle!

O

ne of the many things that downtown Fernandina Beach has in common with every other city is the chance to find a skinny latte with a double shot, only here you won’t be ordering it at any national chain restaurant. On Centre Street, you’ll find the sweet caffeinated relief you crave at Amelia Island Coffee. If caffeine isn’t your thing, don’t worry, because they’ve got organic teas, freshly baked pastries, gourmet ice cream, cold brew, frozen drinks, and a nice selection of craft beers and

varietal wines. With so many options and free wifi to boot, Amelia Island Coffee is the perfect meeting spot for any time of day.

Having spent plenty of time downtown, on many days I have seen throngs of people spilling out of “the coffee shop” while the rest of Centre Street was still asleep. Late in the evening, I’ve seen students working and couples chatting, enjoying one another’s company in the comfortable and casual setting. Sometimes on Saturday mornings, there is even a string band pickin’ and grinnin’ in the pocket park next door.

On a recent cool spring Sunday, I wandered in with a couple of friends for a few laughs and a snack. I can count on one finger the cups of coffee I have had in my life, so I was delighted by the many beverage options. Since it was cool morning, I went with my favorite: a cup of Earl Gray with honey. It was still a little early for lunch, so I did what any logical person would do. I had both! While I sipped on my cup of tea, I enjoyed a chocolate-chocolate chip muffin, which is like having dessert rather than breakfast, but it was moist and delicious, with a beautifully tender crumb.

Not long after polishing off my muffin, our food arrived with big smiles and friendly service. We enjoyed a veggie wrap with hummus, cream cheese, avocado, peppers, onion, artichoke hearts, and feta, as well as a breakfast bagel with bacon, egg, and cheese.

The bagel was fresh and delicious, and the wrap was a perfect vegetarian option for my friend. I chose the California BLT on toasted rye: the bacon was crisp and delicious, the lettuce and tomato fresh, and it was served with a dollop of mayonnaise and a bag of chips.

As we enjoyed our food and conversation, the people never quit coming. The baristas took orders and delivered drinks with the kind of casual efficiency that keeps the line moving without making anyone feel rushed.

As I was telling a friend about my experience later that morning, she shared with me how much she enjoys the Live Trivia on Friday nights. How could you go wrong with a handful of friends, a bucket of beer, discounted snacks, and an evening of trivia in a fun, casual setting?

S

helling is a favorite pastime of many visitors to the beaches of Amelia Island, but the best place to go shelling might be Little Talbot Island, just a short drive down A1A off the south end of the island. Part of the reason the shelling is so good there is because its beaches are not as busy as Amelia’s beaches. That means fewer people, and more shells! After a storm or during full moon when the tide is unusually high, collectors can expect to find a multitude of species, including clam, scallop, and oyster.

On a recent weekday, I took my beau, Rusty, to Little Talbot for a shelling experience he’ll never forget. We went near the low phase of the tide, which exposes the most beach area.

Searching in the “shell line”—where the highest waves stop as they come upon the beach and deposit groups of shells—is where we found the most interesting shells, but Little Talbot’s beaches are almost always awash with treasures.

Rusty was visiting from Oklahoma, so exploring the beach is a magical experience for him. Coming away with a bag of 80 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

beautiful shells, we were eager to identify the various species and learn more about the sea creatures who inhabited them.

Little Talbot’s ranger station provided a shell and sharks teeth handout, which was very helpful. In unpacking our booty, we discovered Arks, Angel Wings, Jingle Shells, Atlantic Slipper Snails, Eastern Oyster Shells, Saw Tooth Pen Shells, Banded Tulips, Minor Jackknife Clams, and Giant Atlantic Cockles.

We didn’t find any sharks teeth on this trip, but it takes a trained eye to find those! We were very happy with our new treasures and took them home to clean.

The best way to clean shells is to fill a bucket with half warm water and half bleach, then toss the shells into this solution and leave them to soak for at least 24 hours. After soaking, scrub the shells with a toothbrush, and then rinse. You can also boil the shells in water, but it all depends on the shell and what condition it is in.

We used our collection of shells for a variety of things.

Some we sent to our granddaughter, others we saved to make earrings, some got placed in a bowl to decorate our coffee table, and interestingly enough, we used several of the large oyster shells as salt cellars to serve sea salt at our dining table.

Before you go shelling, here are a few things to keep in mind. First, don’t ever take a live shell, that is, a shell with a creature living inside. Secondly, just take the shells you need for crafts and decorating; leave the rest for others to find. Thirdly, never take driftwood from Little Talbot Island, as it is a protected feature of the park and collection is strictly prohibited. And lastly, don’t forget to wear sunscreen, and bring plenty of water, because once you start shelling on Little Talbot, you’ll be on the beach for hours!
