Each year, July brings our annual Amelia Islander “Fun in the Summer Sun” issue, in which we spotlight the many and varied activities available around the island. From surfing lessons to history tours, there’s so much to enjoy, for every taste and personality. This year, the unofficial start of the summer for us was the first concert of the “Sounds on Centre” series. We happened to find ourselves downtown on that first Friday of the month and were drawn to the energetic gathering at the foot of Centre Street. It was fun to see people of all ages swinging to the sounds of the Instant Groove band on a lovely summer evening. We ran into lots of friends—people we know from church and from school; people from downtown and from Yulee; even relatives of friends and friends of relatives. These monthly concerts are such a fun and dynamic meeting place, where everyone can enjoy the communal celebration of our summer season. So far it has been a season of fun for us: we’ve enjoyed mini-golf, plenty of ice cream cones and frozen yogurt, beach-time, pool-time, and browsing-through-the-shops time. We’ve even found time for some biking and horseback riding—and we did all this before July 1! We’ve met families from Georgia, North Carolina, and other parts of Florida—and everyone always tells us how much they love their Amelia Island vacation. There is so much for everyone to enjoy, after all, so check out our cover story for some great summer vacation ideas. If, like us, one of your favorite summertime activities is lounging under an umbrella with a book or magazine, then keep turning these pages. he summer sun shines gently on the beaches of Amelia Island. A cool ocean breeze breathes softly on sunbathers and surfers. Children are constructing sandcastles, and colorful beach umbrellas brighten the shoreline. It is July, one of our favorite times of the year. This is a time when we secretly hope that our lawnmower will break down. A time of the year when we turn off the television, put away the video games, and head out to the beach, the golf course, or even the spa. When most of Florida is suffering with summer’s high temperatures, Amelia Island is the place where even Southerners seek respite from the heat. Our beautiful island paradise comes alive during the summer months, jam-packed with activities and entertainment. No matter what your interests, you will always find something new and different to fill your lazy, fun-filled days of summer. lessons. Guided kayak nature tours are a great way to learn about kayaking and the local environment, and no experience is needed. Besides learning some new paddling moves, participants will take a break on a sandbar for a snack and swim, and enjoy tales about Amelia Island’s pristine waterways. A kids’ camp is also available to give the young ones a good start toward a potential lifetime of paddling.

Surf Have you seen those stand-up paddle boards that everyone is using these days? It’s the hottest water sport rage in the nation right now, and anyone can learn to do it. It’s a full-body workout, and you can enjoy it even when there are no waves! Whether you want to ride the waves or lie on the beach, the island’s surf shops are a great place to begin your day. Pipeline Surf Shop (904-277-3717) and Driftwood Surf Shop (904321-2118) both offer lessons, as well as surfboard and stand-up paddle board rentals, along with clothing, gear, and sunglasses that will make you the coolest surfer on the beach. Pipeline Surf Shop offers bike rentals, too. If kayaking is your mode of travel, visit Kayak Amelia (904-251-0016) for kayak rentals and

If you’re a landlubber, summer is the time to head out to the local maritime forests for a multitude of activities available at our state parks and green spaces. Hiking and biking trails are located all over the island, including Fort Clinch State Park, Egans Creek Greenway, and Little Talbot Island State Park. Through the combined efforts of many of Amelia Island’s peddling pals, the Amelia Island Bikers’ Association now offers bike trail maps that you can find in various locations around the island, featuring new bike lanes and safer road crossings. Another fun way to explore Amelia Island and surrounding areas is via EcoMotion Tours (904-251-9477). The Segway experience is a fun and easy way to visit places like Point Isabel on Fort George Island, as well as the historic Kingsley Plantation. EcoMotion Tours operate their tours in the comfortable shade of live oaks, and early morning excursions are a wonderful way to view birds and other wildlife. If you prefer your “turf” to be green, the island has many golf courses that are open to the public. Fernandina Beach Golf Club (904-277-7370) is conveniently located at the center of the island, and their exemplary facility boasts 27 holes of fantastic golf and a full-service restaurant and clubhouse. Just a short drive off the island is The Golf Club at North Hampton (904-418-6107). The natural beauty of this Arnold Palmer signature course is challenging and enjoyable for persons of every skill level, and they have a great lunch menu, too.

The Florida House Inn & Restaurant received the 2012 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from the Amelia Island-Fernandina Restoration Foundation. T

here is much to say about a man who has lived the life that William Maurer has. After earning a Master’s degree from Harvard, Maurer was off to Paris as a young man, to the Ecole des Beaux Arts, then to New York, back to Europe, and Morocco. At present, Maurer is working on a new book, a retrospective of his earlier works in Europe. After spending many years painting on the sidewalks of Paris, Honfleur, Cannes, and Provence, this book showcases a side of the William Maurer that many people don’t know about yet. The artist still visits France every year, where he draws much of his inspiration. His watercolors are rendered in the style of La Belle Époque, the period of turn-of-the-century French Impressionism. His watercolors celebrate the joy and passion for beauty that this period brought to the arts. Locally, Maurer is well-known for his Amelia Island watercolors, depicting the town of Fernandina Beach, with its quaint streets, harbor, and shrimp boats. In fact, the artist’s Shrimp Festival poster

design was selected by a jury in 2009 to represent the community’s best-known event. He has also been applauded for his coffee table book, Sketches of Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach: The Mark of William Maurer. Maurer operated his own architectural offices in Morocco during the 1970s, and he has always enjoyed painting as an extension of the architectural experience. Looking upon Maurer’s beautifully rendered paintings and his expert use of clean, subtle color, along with the precise appointment of his brush, it is no surprise to learn that he was an accomplished architect. William Maurer’s paintings, of both local and international scenes, are available for private showings and by appointment. He works with his wife, Kathleen Maurer, also an artist, and the couple enjoys painting together in their home gallery. They also offer workshops for beginning through experienced artists. usan and David James are the husband-and-wife team behind The Pineapple Patch, a women’s and children’s clothing boutique that has been a part of the downtown scene for the past 12 years. The couple lived in Atlanta for many years, where David had a 16-year career working for an antique furniture company based in North Carolina. Later, David and Susan, along with sons David and Will, lived on Sanibel Island and owned a jewelry company, specializing in jewelry made of shipwreck artifacts. Susan also had experience working in a women’s specialty boutique. When they decided to open their own women’s and children’s store, they could think of no better place than Fernandina Beach. “Fernandina was the perfect place to raise our children and start a business,” says Susan. “Having grown up in St. Marys, Ga., I had fond memories of Fernandina. We also wanted to move to the area to be closer to family.” Son David is now working at Atkins Global, an engineering firm in Ft. Lauderdale, and Will is a sophomore at Florida State. Originally from Waycross, Georgia, Richard Germano moved to Amelia in the early ‘90’s. Daughter Holly Germano is now the General Manager of this delightful 86-room hotel, located just across the street from the beach. In addition to the comfortable oceanside balcony rooms, the hotel also has the Terrace Suite, where guests can relax in the jacuzzi tub, or enjoy a glass of bubbly next to the fireplace in their own private lounge. W

hen spotted at local restaurants, Barbara Ann Scott and Tom King tend to turn heads. This handsome couple has an enthusiasm for life and for the people around them that is contagious. In fact, they could be ambassadors for Florida’s most northern barrier island, which has been their permanent home for more than 15 years. Their generous donations to their church and many other worthwhile causes on the island have made a big difference in this community. Indeed, a new building adjacent to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Amelia Park will soon be named the Scott King Pavilion. Whether in the world of competitive sports or the world of business, the pair have enjoyed great success. To say Barbara Scott King is legend is no exaggeration. At 11, she won the Canadian Junior Championship and, two years later, she became the first female skater to land a double Lutz in competition. She surprised the world by winning the 1947 world championship, succeeding the great Norwegian star, Sonja Henie. Winning the 1947 European and World Championships, she was the first lady to bring these titles back to North America, representing Canada. She went on to win the Olympic gold medal at the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics, and Canada had found its queen of figure skating. Scott King was awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s outstanding athlete in 1945, 1947, and 1948. She has been inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Figure Skating Hall of Fame. She recently donated an amazing collection of awards, costumes, trophies, and her Olympic Gold Medal to Skate Canada in Ottawa, where much of it will be on permanent display. When Barbara Ann Scott left professional skating in 1955 and married Tom King, she did not give up competition. She went on to groom, train, and show horses for 30 years. Yet, for

all she has accomplished, she is quick to move the focus to her husband of 55 years. Prior to their move to Amelia Island, King was a mover and shaker in Chicago, where he was president of the worldrenowned Mart Center, the Merchandise Mart and the Apparel Center in Chicago, as well as the Washington Design Center. Prior to his business career, he was a successful collegiate athlete, who went on to play professional basketball in the N.B.A. He later served as an officer in the Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. In more recent years, he has been involved in numerous corporate and philanthropic boards. He also has a passion for the game of golf and can shoot his age of 88. As if that were not enough, his musical talent is evident in his on-going passion for jazz. With good friend, Harry Goldson, he put together a group of five talented musicians and formed The Royal Chicagoans, producing numerous jazz recordings over the years. When Barbara Ann Scott and Tom King turn heads in local restaurants, there is indeed good reason. Learning of their many national and international accomplishments, as well as their local activities, people can then only shake their heads in amazement at this legendary local couple.

Desert Rose

coming up roses With so many attractive varieties, it is no wonder that roses are the most widely acclaimed of all flowering plants. BY BETTY MORRELL

W

e asked for rain, and we got rain! The plants are happy, the lawns have greened up nicely, and new plants have gotten off to a wonderful start. But have you seen the dollar weeds? I have such a luscious green bed of dollar weeds, and I can’t get rid of them. I didn’t have them before the rains, but they spread like wildfire afterward. Fortunately, because the ground is soft from all the rain, the weeds come out rather easily. Roses have a strong gravitational pull for garden lovers. Hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, English roses, climbing, groundcover, hedge, miniature, antique, and tree—there are so many wonderful roses! How about desert rose, Panama rose, althea-rose of Sharon, or New Zealand tea rose? The Panama rose (Rondeletia leucophyllia) is not seen in many local gardens, probably because it is a tropical plant and prone to dying to the ground in a hard freeze. It will come right back when the weather warms up, however, so it is indeed a good choice for our area. This pretty shrub has clusters of starshaped pink flowers that bloom in the

cold months as well as in the summer. Its flowers, which resemble those of the penta family, attract butterflies when little else is in bloom. It likes the sun, is salttolerant, and is a very attractive plant. The desert rose (Adenlium obesum) is a striking succulent plant (not actually a rose) with swollen succulent stems and deep red trumpet-shaped flowers. The plant is deciduous in cooler winters, but can be kept in leaf, provided there is sufficient warmth and light water. I take mine into the house for the winter, and it has bloomed for the five years that I have had it. It makes a wonderful patio potted plant or an indoor plant in a sunny window. Water this plant during the summer and spring months, reduce in the winter, but keep enough water going to retain its leaves.

New Zealand tea rose (Leptospermum scoparium; also called tea tree) is another wonderful choice. For six months, this shrub nearly covers itself with flowers. For a long bloom season, few shrubs can beat the New Zealand tea rose. In mild coastal areas, it blooms six to seven months a year, and is salttolerant. Up close, the flowers resemble miniature wild roses, with delicate petals and a cupped center of pollen-tipped anthers. From a distance, they bloom in such profusion that the bush becomes a mass of pink, rose, or dark red. Growing them is easy; steady moisture is the key to success. Amend the soil as needed, or plant on a slope or in a raised bed to provide good drainage. Full sun gives the best blooms. When most plants get hit hard by a frost, this plant keep plugging along, flowering through it all. When planting, choose a site with ample space. ike many Amelia Island residents, Mary Pardue came to the island to vacation in a warm climate, but soon found that the island beckoned her for more than just the occasional vacation. She purchased a condominium at Amelia Island Plantation, and Amelia quickly became her full-time residence. What drew her to this particular home was the proximity to the marsh, and the panoramic views. “My home is in the marsh,” says Mary, “not just on the marsh.” Indeed, the back deck overlooks the wetlands in such a way that a person can actually feel as if they were part of the landscape.

When Mary purchased the home in 1995, it had already been renovated once. Built in the 1970s, the original home included a swimming pool area. In the 1995 renovation, the homeowners removed the pool to make room for a spacious dining room, and updated the kitchen, the master bedroom, and the floor-toceiling windows. The 1,400-squarefoot dwelling was fine for a while, but Mary decided to increase the space by adding a second story. She enlisted the help of Renea and Randy Rice of Rice Architect, LLC, who were excited to tackle the redo of the building.

“The original units were designed by a Chicago architect,” explains Rice. The Rices liked the lines of the condo and the drama of the space, with its dueling angles— and they used that as their inspiration. “The original architecture took a modernist approach,” says Randy Rice. “It was captivating! Our modifications strove to highlight the original angularity of the space, while bringing these architectural elements into a new light.” And light is what this condo is all about. In fact, Mary affectionately calls her home the “lighthouse” because no matter what time of day, the home is cheery, bright, and open. There are no window treatments, as the views from all the windows speak for themselves. The architects kept the same feel of the home when they added the upstairs, by continuing to reinforce the shifted grid with an open staircase and larger foyer. Anytime a home is renovated during a new era of design, it can be challenging. “We tried to hold true to its original simplicity,” explains Rice. “The challenge was getting the outside in, and I think we accomplished that. When you

walk through the door, it’s a surprise. In fact, the foyer and staircase are my favorite places in the house.” “Randy and Renea were fabulous to work with,” says Mary, who enjoyed working with both Rices. “They were able to offer both male and female aspects to the home’s design.” She goes on to note how much she loved Randy’s idea for a dropped soffit between the dining room and living room. “It creates even more drama in the space,” she says. Mary enjoys entertaining both small and large groups of friends, and she soon discovered that, with the open space, it works perfectly for gatherings of nearly any size. “Everything that Randy and Renea did added to the flow of the rooms.” Mary explains. She also has family members who visit as

frequently as possible, so the three bedrooms and three baths come in handy, especially during the holidays. Mary also loves art and literature, which is apparent in her choices of paintings, furniture, and bookcases, as well as in her ability to pull it all together with flair. She is a writer herself, dabbling in poetry and short stories, and gets much of her creativity from her home on the marsh. “I’m very emotional about this house,” she says. “There’s something almost mystical about it—in the way the marsh changes day to day, the birds I see, everything about this home. SEASIDE GRILL

S

ome restaurants have real staying power because of their rich history and fabulous food, and Sliders Seaside Grill is just that kind of eatery. Sliders has been a favorite dining establishment and watering hole for locals and visitors alike for years. Recently, the restaurant has undergone a number of major renovations. I took my friend, Rumsey, to Sliders one afternoon to celebrate his birthday, and as usual, our meal was memorable and fun. Rumsey and I like to eat outside near their Tiki Bar, which features live music every evening. I like the fact that no matter how warm it is, there is always a pleasant ocean breeze and plenty of people-watching to do. Sliders has great bar drinks, and that’s always a fun beginning to a meal. Our server, Crystal, suggested that I try the Jamaican Ten Speed, a rum drink with plenty of secret ingredients and a tropical tang that had hints of coconut and banana. While we sipped our drinks, we decided to sample several of Sliders’ best offerings, and Chef Don Fagen and Sous Chef Steve Flannery made up a platter of their specialties to try. Rumsey and I love shrimp & grits, and it’s interesting that every restaurant has their own spin on this Southern favorite.

Slider’s is made with local, Creole-spiced shrimp, with red eye gravy, smoked sausage, and good, coarsely ground white grits. Highly seasoned and spicy, this dish was rich and satisfying. We then tasted Sliders famous crab cakes, which are chock full of lump crab meat and topped with an olive and tomato confetti. It was a terrific condiment and very unique! There was also some grilled asparagus on the plate and that was a lovely surprise—normally you don’t find fresh vegetables on seafood platters, nor so artfully prepared. We also sampled Sliders Punch, a concoction of rum, vodka, tequila, fruit juices, and grenadine that really packs a punch! Our favorite Sliders offering, however, has to be their fried shrimp, always perfectly cooked, with a very light batter, crispy on the outside and moist within. I also like that Sliders always gives you plenty of cocktail sauce, remoulade sauce, and lemons to go with their seafood dishes. Sliders also has a nice selection of beer and wines, and so with the last portion of our dinner we enjoyed a glass of Sam Adams Lager and Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc. Our dessert was strawberry shortcake, made with homemade shortcake “biscuits” and Florida Plant City strawberries, a sweet ending to an enjoyable birthday dinner. The restaurant’s recent renovations were thoughtfully done, with special attention paid to color scheme, privacy, beach views, and ease of access. A full “Breakers Bar” has been installed upstairs, along with a large banquet hall that has moveable partitions to accommodate any number of persons, up to 125. There is a large outside porch that faces the ocean, and the view is spectacular. There is also a smaller porch area on the other side of the building, a buffet room with serving tables, and there is also live music upstairs seven nights a week. The building and location are rich in history. In fact, Sliders fabulous local seafood and friendly, beachy atmosphere have been enjoyed by five generations of satisfied guests!

GARLIC GODDESS VINAIGRETTE 3 whole garlic cloves 1/3 cup chives 1/3 cup parsley 2 tbsp. tahini 2 tbsp. nutritional yeast 1 tbsp. miso 1/3 cup water 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1/2 tsp. sea salt Place garlic, chives, and parsley in food processor and pulse until chunky and mixed fairly well. Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

s the mercury rises and the humidity thickens, it’s time to think cool and eat cool, and that means summertime salads. Not only are salads cool, crunchy, and fun to eat, but Web MD calls eating salads one of the healthiest eating habits you can adopt. So here are four tips to satisfy your palate while enhancing your health this summer. First, ditch the iceberg lettuce. Instead, use nutrient-dense romaine, red leaf, and spinach. Dark leafy greens will boost your blood antioxidant levels with vitamins C and E, folic acid, lycopene, carotenes, and chlorophyll. Secondly, add ground flax or chia seeds to your salads to increase fiber content. Eating more fiber will help you feel fuller, lose weight, lower cholesterol, and avoid constipation. Thirdly, eat salads to get smart fats. Studies show that phytonutrients in salads are absorbed eight to 13 times better when eaten with avocados. If you dress your salad with olive oil there may be some additional years in it for you. Italian research on people aged 60 and older suggests that a diet that includes plenty of olive oil and raw vegetables is linked to reduced mortality. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, create your salads with organic fruits and veggies. Government sources estimate the average American consumes 141 pounds of chemicals a year. Eating organically can reduce this exposure up to 92 percent. And besides, organic foods simply taste better! So, have you had your salad today? MIDDLE EASTERN SALAD 8 cups of spring mix 2 cups of hummus 1 bunch celery, cut into bite-sized pieces 1 bunch carrots, cut into bite-sized pieces

ALMOND LEMON VINAIGRETTE 1/2 cup almonds 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 5/8 cup water 1/4 cup nutritional yeast 1 1/2 tbsp. Braggs liquid aminos 1/8 tsp. asafetida 1/4 cup unbleached white sugar (raw sugar will not blend) 1/2 cup lemon juice, organic Blend all vinaigrette ingredients with one half of water in blender. When almonds are completely smooth, add remaining water, a little at a time, until desired smoothness is reached. Lightly toss spring mix in almond lemon vinaigrette and place on plates. Place two tablespoons each of hummus and tabouleh next to each other on plates. Garnish with carrots and celery and serve.
