High-caliber festivals can transform the spaces of our daily lives into extraordinary experiences in entertainment and the arts.

Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Advertising Sales Contributing Writers Dickie Anderson, Jan Davis, Theresa Duncan, Jim Ewing, Kate Harris, Nan Kavanaugh, Karen Miller, Betty Morrell, Julie Simmons

In our August issue, we spotlighted the right whales and sea turtles that return each year to their breeding grounds on Amelia. One longtime local resident named Jeanne wrote on our Facebook page how much she enjoyed learning new things about our unique environment on Amelia. We want to thank her and everyone who reached out to us to tell us how much they enjoyed our August issue. In this issue, we spotlight another annual migration of sorts: the jazz and blues musicians who arrive each fall on our shores for a unique musical season on Amelia. Last year, we had so much fun at both festivals. They’re both terrific community events. With top-notch musicians here at our doorstep, what better excuse could there be to get out with some friends? Last year, we got a sitter and met our friends Marianne and Ed at the Blues Festival. To see Main Beach transformed into a beachfront festival with professional staging and lighting worthy of the great music being performed there was astounding. We were able to grab a bite to eat from one of the local vendors, while enjoying some virtuoso blues. It was a reminder about what high-caliber festivals can do: transform the spaces of our daily lives into extraordinary experiences in entertainment and the arts. For many years now, the Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival has been transforming our local churches and public spaces into world-class music venues. Among our favorite encounters with jazz greats over the years were the David Sanborn and Ramsey Lewis concerts—both truly amazing experiences. This year, the Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival has teamed up with the Omni Amelia Island Plantation. It’s exciting news, as jazz legends Spyro Gyra and David Benoit, who will be performing this year, will have venues that can offer enough space for the number of people that such widely acclaimed musicians attract. What an incredible musical opportunity! Also this month, we present a fascinating article by Dickie Anderson on the Fairbanks House, part of our series on the Great Houses of Fernandina; we raise our glasses to the inaugural Amelia Island Wine Festival; we take you through a fabulous house on North Beach in our Island Home column; and much more. See you around the island!

LUES AND JAZZ MUSIC GO HAND-IN-HAND AS AMERICA’S ONLY TRUE MUSICAL FORMS. THE ORIGINS OF JAZZ AND BLUES ARE TRACED TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN RITUAL MUSIC IN THE DEEP SOUTH, MOST ORIGINATING IN LIVE PERFORMANCES

held in shadowy clubs and bars, many in New Orleans, and in other places in the South. Here on Amelia Island, as artistic and musical offerings have flourished in recent years, it’s no wonder that the upcoming Amelia Island Blues Festival and Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival attract thousands of music lovers each year. The first on the calendar, the Blues Festival, features a three-day weekend filled with amazing blues performances, and the Jazz Festival in October offers an entire week of jazz musicians from around the country. Both festivals have a variety of concerts, artists, and prices to suit all individuals, as well as families. In addition to the highly acclaimed national talent, Amelia Islanders will also be treated to some local talent, and a variety of related activities, including an art show, programs for school children, and special senior events. Be sure to choose your favorite artists, mark your calendars, grab the kids and your special someone, and head out to an autumn of musical marvels and events!

Amelia Island Blues Festival, September 14, 15 & 16 On September 14, 15, and 16, Amelia Island gets the blues—the Amelia Island Blues Festival, that is—celebrating its second year of smokin’ good music, held at Main Beach Park. With the Atlantic Ocean as its backdrop, the festival is offering up an end-of-summer party that even beats last year’s event, expanding the blues from two to three days and featuring a line-up of spectacular local and nationally acclaimed artists. The festival kicks off on Friday night with Mojo Chillen from Daytona, and Fernandina Beach’s own Beech Street Blues Band, followed by headliners Flannel Church with Duane Trucks (brother of Derek Trucks and son of Butch Trucks, drummer of the Allman Brothers Band) and Shane Dwight. Flannel Church, the band that started as “something to do” for drummer Trucks, guitarist Gregory “Wolfe” Hodges, and bass player Kevin Scott while they were at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, has become a hot group and a full-time endeavor. Shane Dwight is an American Roots Music Artist whose songwriting, singing, and guitar playing is considered a tour de force in the world of blues. On Saturday, concerts begin at noon, featuring an array of spectacular musicians, with headliners Sean Chambers, Albert Castiglia, and Shemekia Copeland, beginning at 6 p.m. Chambers’ brand of blues is a no-frills blend of Chicago, Texas, and Delta styles, played with an understated sense of ferocity. Castiglia, whose latest album, Living the Dream, was released this summer, is a favorite high-energy performer at blues festivals across the country. Copeland’s passion for singing,

matched with her huge, furnace-blast voice, gives her music a timeless power and a heart-pounding urgency. Aptly named “Queen of the Blues,” Copeland began her career singing at Harlem’s famed Cotton Club when she was just eight years old. Sunday’s concerts kick off with Kim Reteguiz and the Black Cat Bones from Jacksonville, winner of the Battle of the Blues competition held earlier this year. Reteguiz is known regionally as a vocal powerhouse with a dynamic vocal range and an equally exciting stage performance. For the Sunday headliner, Detroit’s David Gerald returns to the Blues Festival this year, after last year’s eye-popping performance. Gerald’s blues have been receiving widespread radio play, along with recognition in the blues community. He was listed as number one on the ReverbNation blues charts for Michigan blues artists. Other talented artists that concert-goers can expect to enjoy during the three days of blues on the beach include young superstar Alex Ivanov, Roger “Hurricane” Wilson, the Nouveaux Honkies, J.P Soars and the Red Hots, Bill Sheffield, Blistur, Beth McKee, and the local Blues in Schools Band. In addition to the music, the Amelia Island Museum of History has launched a new exhibition, “History of the Blues,” that features a tribute to the famed “Chitlin’ Circuit,” a collective name for venues throughout the southern and eastern United States that allowed African-American musicians and entertainers to perform during segregation. The exhibition runs through September 30. The Amelia Island Blues Festival Committee and Board of Directors have worked all year promoting the festival and enlisting volunteers and sponsors. founding member of the festival, encourages concert-goers to take advantage of the many packages that the three-day festival has to offer. “One thing we try to do is to keep the prices low, so everyone has an opportunity to come to the festival,” says Malone. “We offer a three-day pass, daily passes, and a VIP special seating pass. Our fantastic vendors are offering food, drinks, and shopping, to make your Blues Festival experience the best. With a little sand and surf—and a collection of some of the best blues around—it’s sure to be a great weekend!” This year, the festival is sponsored by RockTenn, its number one supporter, along with SearchAmelia, Fast Signs, The Hampton Inn Amelia Island at the Beach, and Amelia Hotel at the Beach. So far, the festival has raised enough proceeds to purchase a six-passenger shuttle for Baptist Medical Center Nassau, used to assist and transport individuals on their fast-growing hospital campus. For more information about artists or to buy tickets, visit the Blues Festival website at www.ameliaislandbluesfest.com or call (904) 310-6153.

Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival, October 7-14 “The 2012 Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival is swingin’ hard this year – the jazz is smooth and in the groove,” says Artistic Director Les DeMerle. The festival is celebrating its 11th year on Amelia Island, featuring an exciting lineup of acclaimed artists. The week-long event, which runs October 7 to 14, has grown so dramatically that most of the concerts and events will take place at the Omni Resorts Amelia Island Plantation this year.

Multiple Grammy Award-nominated jazz-fusion artists Spyro Gyra and contemporary pianist David Benoit are set to headline this year’s festival. A hugely successful and internationally acclaimed group that has sold over ten million albums since its 1977 inception, Spyro Gyra will appear Saturday, October 13, at the Omni Resorts Amelia Island Plantation. This year marks 35 years since their first album release. Their newest album, A Foreign Affair, was released in September 2011, and features a collection of world music done in Spyro Gyra’s innovative style. Formed out of Buffalo, New York’s fertile jazz scene by saxophonist Jay Beckenstein, Spyro Gyra quickly made a name for itself by creating a distinctive style that sounded like nothing that had come before. Beckenstein is pleased to bring the group to Amelia Island for the festival this year. “This is my first trip to Amelia Island and I’m very excited to see a place I’ve heard is so lovely,” says Beckenstein. “History being my hobby, I’m also looking forward to seeing a place so rich in history.” David Benoit will appear on Saturday, October 12, also at the Omni. His expansive career as a highly regarded jazz pianist has included over 25 solo recordings. His ‘80s releases This Side Up, Freedom at Midnight, and the Grammy nominated Every Step of the Way are regarded as jazz-fusion classics. Benoit has also penned notable film scores, such as The Stars Fell on Henrietta, produced by Clint Eastwood and starring Robert Duvall. Heavily influenced by Vince Guaraldi, Benoit coincidently performed and recorded with DeMerle’s 1970’s fusion band, Transfusion. Both Spyro Gyra and David Benoit will perform in the Omni’s tented pavilion area in Racquet Park.

The full week of musical events will include performances by the brilliant jazz violinist, Doug Cameron, smooth jazz pianist Mike Levine with the Miami Vibe, and The Dynamic Les DeMerle Band featuring vocalist Bonnie Eisele, plus Latin Jazz Night, a Blues Night with Wine Tasting, the Dixieland Jazz Brunch, the Smooth Jazz Brunch, jam sessions, and many other happenings. The festival kicks off on Sunday, October 7 with Les DeMerle’s Spare Rib Six playing for the Dixieland Brunch, followed later that afternoon by Orion, the 18-piece U.S. Navy Big Band Southeast, performing a free concert in Amelia Park from 4 to 6 p.m. The following Tuesday, Jazz at the Movies will offer SATCHMO, a classic documentary on the first great jazz improviser, Louis Armstrong. Wednesday, October 10 will showcase a Blues Night and Wine Tasting at Sandy Bottoms with the exciting Eric Culberson Blues Band from Savannah, Ga. On Thursday, October 12, the festival will continue its traditional Latin Jazz with Orlando’s trumpet master Bobby Pickwood and Samba Soul. Following the weekend’s world-class headliner concerts, the festival culminates at the Omni on Sunday, October 14 with a Smooth Jazz Brunch, featuring the Amelia Island Jazz AllStars and some very special guests. The Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival also provides youngsters the opportunity to learn about America’s unique musical art form with Jazz in the Schools. The festival donates

part of its proceeds toward a scholarship program to fund college educations for aspiring jazz musicians. In previous years, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival has brought numerous top-drawer players to the area, including David Sanborn, Ramsey Lewis, and Buckwheat Zydeco. “We are committed to presenting high-quality programs,” DeMerle adds, “and the community has demonstrated its support with increasing attendance and enthusiasm.” DeMerle goes on to say that he and his wife, Bonnie Eisele, the rest of the AIJF board, and the festival’s many hard-working volunteers are excited about partnering with Omni and reaching their world-wide market. This year, the festival is again receiving the strong support of many sponsors, especially the Amelia Island Convention & Visitors’ Bureau, as well as international jazz publications JAZZIZ and DownBeat Magazine. “The concerts will explode with exciting, swinging jazz played with passion, expertise, and soul by many of today’s leading jazz artists,” says DeMerle. “Each year’s talent roster is the best line-up we can assemble.” And what do the musicians think about spending some time on our beautiful island paradise? Beckenstein says it all: “What could be a better way to visit Amelia Island than to come with my friends to play some great music?” For information on the Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival, to buy tickets in advance, or to become a sponsor, visit their website at www.ameliaislandjazzfestival.com or call the festival hotline at (904) 504-4772.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island is the recipient of two prestigious AAA Five Diamond designations, the travel authority’s highest rating. In addition to the resort lodging award, Salt, the resort’s fine dining restaurant, was also designated for service excellence. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island is part of a select group representing the upper echelon of the hospitality industry. Less than a quarter of one percent of lodgings and restaurants receive the AAA Five Diamond designation. “Receiving one AAA Five Diamond award for the resort and a second for Salt is testament to the dedication and outstanding efforts of the ladies and gentlemen of The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island,” said James E. McManemon, general manager. “I am very proud of their service commitment to our guests.” For 76 years, AAA has used professional inspectors to conduct in-person property inspections and publish the results, using a system of One to Five Diamonds to guide member travel decisions. The 5 Diamond designation represents “the ultimate in luxury, sophistication and comfort with extraordinary physical attributes, meticulous personalized service, extensive amenities, and impeccable standards of excellence.

ocal artists of all abilities have the opportunity to learn from nationally recognized artists at four exciting workshops being offered this fall by Amelia Island Artists Workshops. The first workshop, from September 14 to 16, features expert watercolorist Pat Weaver, who will present an exciting way to mix color, using limited palettes, and will include Alla Prima painting, a simplified way to draw and an uncomplicated approach to composition and design. Weaver is an international watercolor instructor, having traveled throughout the United States, Italy, France, Mexico, the Bahamas, Saint Thomas, and the Virgin Islands, teaching workshops. From October 26 to 28, Nicholas Simmons’ “Liquid Acrylic on Paper Workshop” will take place. A shining star of the art world right now, Simmons paints in water-media that rivals oil painting. He is known for his fresh, unorthodox, and often irreverent approach. Working with liquid acrylics as well as watercolors, Simmons will show students techniques they will most certainly want to adopt and adapt to their own way of working.

From November 8 to 11, the workshops series presents Jane Paul Angelhart’s “Watercolor Portraits from Photographs Workshop.” Angelhart has a unique, step-by-step method of teaching the student how to paint with clean, rich color to create beautiful portraits in watercolor, from their photographs. Students will learn a new method of creating rich, vibrant and clear colors. Soon Yoon Warren, an awardwinning watercolor realistic artistic, will provide a step-by-step class to create your own watercolor still-life composition in February 2013, and a few spots remain open. In March 2013, nationally recognized and award-winning artist Mary Whyte of Charleston will provide the secrets to realistic watercolor portraits in a sold-out class for a once in a lifetime opportunity to study with a true master. For more information or to register for any of the classes, contact Sandra Baker-Hinton at (904) 491-8040, or Mikolean Longacre at (904) 415-3900. Amelia Island Artists Workshop is located in the Amelia SanJon Gallery, at 418A Ash Street in downtown Fernandina Beach.

fter Allen Eldridge left the SEABEES Construction Battalion, U.S. Navy, in 2001, he realized just how much he missed construction. In 2004, he acquired his contractor’s license, and started his own construction business, Karlen Custom Homes. At that time, Eldridge focused on custom home building, but, when the economy began to decline, Allen and his superintendent, Tom Ray, started doing remodeling. As real estate begins to climb once more, Allen and Tom realize that their diverse talents and hard work have kept them on their feet. “We have hands- on experience in just about every facet of building or remodeling,” says Eldridge. “We will wear a tool belt, if necessary. Our subcontractors are the best in the business. We know they’re doing a good job because we know how it’s supposed to be done.” Eldridge believes that his success lies in Karlen’s approach to customer service. “When I meet with my clients, I explain to them how a house ‘works,’ so I can get insight into what they are looking for,” says Eldridge. “Things like how a house breathes, its energy efficiency, types of insulation, that sort of thing.” He then goes over the house plans page by page with his customers, explaining everything they need to know about how and why their home is being constructed the way it is. “Communication is the key—without all the bull,” says Allen. “Our logo states quality, and our actions state integrity.” To learn more, call (904) 557-4208.

n a world full of big box stores and absentee owner chain businesses, Rick Keffer goes to work every morning with a small-business attitude. In fact, this owner of a large car dealership on A1A moved to the area 15 years ago because he wanted to be part of a small community. “Owner-operated businesses are hard to find these days,” says Keffer. “But I have branded my business with my image. I know my customers on a personal basis, and they know me.” Some of Keffer’s original employees are still with the dealership. They are like family to him. This month, Rick Keffer Dodge Chrysler Jeep will be celebrating their 15-year anniversary at their location in Yulee. No small feat for a business owner who has seen his share of economic upheavals over the last few years. Keffer has diversified his car sales to include buyers in Jacksonville and Georgia, as well as increasing his Internet sales. “We’ve had to change with people’s buying habits,” says Keffer. “But, the most important thing to me is living and owning a business in a small community, where I have raised my children and I know my neighbors.” Keffer and his wife, Hollie, are thrilled that their children are doing well in college now, Katie at Furman University and Christopher at Clemson. “A lot has happened in 15 years,” says Keffer. “But our mission to provide quality service and sales is the same.” For more information, call Rick Keffer Dodge Chrysler Jeep at (904) 277-6969.

The Fairbanks House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES

T

he Fairbanks House, located in Fernandina Beach’s historic district, is sure to impress. It is set back off the street on a generous lot. One is struck by the number of architectural details that make houses of the Victorian period distinctive, such as the Italianate design, which is evident in the vertical lines and distinctive tower. Her colors are very close to the original, and she features elegant balustrade porches, dormers, bay windows, massive chimneys, and an oriel window. To the rear of the house, facing 6th Street, there are two cottages that served as quarters for the Fairbanks’ servants. One of the two cottages may have been the island’s first schoolhouse. The four-story home with its imposing 15-foot tower was built of the finest materials and designed by Robert Sands Schuyler, a New York architect. Schuyler’s distinctive talent is evident in many island homes, as well as in the architectural gem, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, located at Atlantic and 8th Streets. The house features 12-foot ceilings, floors of heart pine, a fireplace in every major room, and a striking staircase leading to the upper floors. There are many special touches throughout the house that demonstrate the details in which Fairbanks took such delight. For example, unique tiles were used to frame two of the fireplaces on the main floor. The tiles in the parlor are illustrations taken from the plays of Shakespeare. In the dining room, the fireplace tiles portray a more playful theme: Aesop’s fables. When originally built, townspeople called it “Fairbanks’ Folly.” Some speculated that a house with so many rooms (20)

and ten fireplaces was frivolous and, therefore, a folly. Another much-repeated theory behind the folly moniker is that Mrs. Fairbanks did not like the elaborate house or furniture when it was given to her as a surprise by her husband. George Fairbanks was an innovator—and there were lots of firsts at the “Folly.” The house had the first telephone, the first elevator, and the first concrete sidewalk on the island. Fairbanks was also a man with an amazing list of honors and deeds. Originally from New York, Fairbanks was a fruit grower, a noted historian, a lawyer, an editor of the Florida Mirror, and a major in the Confederate Army. After his military service, he was actively involved in the reconstruction of the University of the South at Sewanee. Sewanee alumni are familiar with Rebel’s Rest, the cottage Fairbanks built on the campus soon after Appomattox. Fairbanks and his family lived in the cottage as a residence six months of the year, enjoying the cooler mountain air during the heat of summer. A proud Floridian, Fairbanks served as state senator from 1846 to 1848. In 1856, he founded the Florida Historical Society and served as the organization’s first president when the society reorganized in 1902. He was a successful citrus grower and the first president of the Florida Fruit Growers. Much of the wood on the first floor was brought from some of the family’s orange groves near Gainesville. After the Fairbanks family moved away, members of the Marcellus Williams family (related to the Fairbanks) lived in the home. At one time, the large, elegant home was even a private school. It currently operates as a successful bed and breakfast.

The inaugural Amelia Island Wine Festival offers a fresh, new look at Florida wines.

BY WILMA ALLEN

“C

heers!” to the organizers of the Amelia Island Wine Festival! It’s not just Amelia Island’s first wine festival: this is the first festival ever to feature exclusively Florida wine and the talented people who make it. “We are making history!” says Tom Thomas, who works with Florida’s Certified Farm Winery Program. In case you didn’t know it, wine has been produced in Florida for centuries. Experts say that French Huguenot settlers made the first wine in the new world in the mid-1500’s. They used the plump, juicy Muscadine grapes found growing wild near St. Augustine. Muscadines, scuppernong grapes, and other native fruits have been the foundation of Florida wines ever since. Today, there is much more to the story. After decades of research and experimentation, Florida wine growers are finally producing hybrid “bunch” grapes that can tolerate our high humidity. Vintners can make lighter and drier wines than previously possible in Florida, and people are starting to notice. Over the past ten years, Thomas says, industry sales have increased, along with interest in starting new wineries. Plus, several new wines have won international wine competitions and praise far beyond the Sunshine State. The festival, set for October 13 on the waterfront in downtown Fernandina Beach, is the brainchild of Jan Smith, organizer of the successful Fernandina Farmers Market and the Amelia Island Garden Show. A former Californian who worked with Napa Valley wineries for many years, Smith says wine festivals are very popular, but consist mostly of distributers showing out-of-state, mass-produced wines. “I thought, ‘why not have a festival where people can try local wines and meet the actual vintners?’” says Smith. “It fits in with the Farmers Market’s emphasis on knowing where your food is coming from and supporting local farmers.” Ticketholders can sample from over 100 dry, sweet, red, white, rose, organic, dessert, and sparkling wines from fourteen Florida wineries. Many are made from the new Blanc du Bois grape, which was named for a French winemaker who came to Florida in 1882 and started a vineyard near Tallahassee. Royal Manor Winery will showcase its award-winning Blanc du

Bois, and San Sebastian Winery and Old Oaks Vineyards will present their new Blanc de Bois blends. SeaBreeze Winery, the state’s largest vineyard, will bring both dry and sweet medalists. Unusual wines made from fruits will also be featured, including tropical, citrus, and berry wines from Florida Orange Groves and Winery in St. Petersburg and mango, lychee, and guava specialties from Schnebly Redland’s Winery

Ripening Muscadine grapes.

in Homestead. Don’t miss Royal Manor Winery’s “Southern Passion,” a blend of peaches and passion fruit, or the 100 percent organic wines from Monticello Vineyards near Tallahassee. You may even find a carrot, honey, pumpkin, or avocado wine to suit your fancy! While sampling, you can pair your favorites with signature dishes from top local restaurants BarZin Bistro, Ciao, Espana, and Salt, the fine dining restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. You’ll also enjoy browsing through tantalizing displays of gourmet food, fresh cheeses, and wine-related mementos— all of that set against the backdrop of our beautiful harbor and set to live music. So come raise a glass to talented wine makers, adventurous wine lovers, and refreshing new Florida wines. To learn more, go to www.AmeliaWine.com or call (904) 491-4872.

ummer’s heat may stop us from putting new plants in the ground, but it doesn’t have to stop us from planning other improvements. This summer, I’ve been thinking about all of the beds, paths, and visual focal points we can use in our gardens. One wonderful way to accent a garden is with stones. Rock gardens are always fun and can be complemented by a variety of attractive plants, like succulents, bromeliads, small ferns, and trailing herbs, like thyme or mint. You can do many things with stones, like accenting a bed with a boulder, outlining a garden area, or making paths with ¾-inch river rock. Fine pine mulch will enhance the look of your river rock path. Just put in edging around the gardens to hold in the dirt and mulch and to retain the stone in the paths. It’s a very simple and elegant look. There are several types of mulch available. My favorite is the fine pine, nicknamed “coffee grounds.” A finely processed mulch, it has been treated to help keep the ants and bugs away. Then you have the small mini-pines, which make a very attractive and long-lasting mulch. The large chunk pine is used for very large areas. There is also the cypress

mulch. I prefer the natural shade to the colored cypress mulch, as it lasts longer, doesn›t fade, and doesn›t look so artificial. Last, but not least, is the pine straw. This mulch is known to decompose faster than the other mulches, and it makes a very good hiding place for snakes, rodents, and bugs. It does keep down the weeds, but in the long run it ends up costing more because you have to continuously replenish it. The notion that fine pine mulch blows away is false. If, after putting down the fine pine, you wet it thoroughly, it will be set for as long as you want it. I have had customers who refresh it no more than every two to three years. When blowing leaves, keep the blower end a good 18 inches above the mulch and you will not disturb it.

How about a water feature with crushed oyster shell or granite surrounding it? Water features come in every size, from tiny to large. A small fountain with a trickle of water can be just as pleasing as the rushing sounds of a waterfall in a pond. You can put them in any yard, choosing a size that is appropriate for your space. A variety of water plants are available to complement the pond or fountain. If you don’t want to get an elaborate fountain, there are tabletop ones for your patio or in the house. Oriental gardens sometimes feature dry river beds that are made with small river rock interspersed with some interesting larger rocks. The area around or along the river bed can be planted with drought-resistant shrubs and flowers, like lantana, buddleia, elaeagnus, pineapple guava, pyracantha, plumbago, crape myrtle, golden rain tree, juniper, nandina, and oleander, to name a few. Add a bench or a Buddha statue and you have a simple Zen garden! If you have questions on any of these garden features, you can e-mail me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

arolyn Carr and her husband, Peter, built a lovely home in a Summer Beach community back in the late 1990’s. And as much as this ex-national promotions manager for The Coca Cola Company enjoyed her house on the south end of Amelia Island, Carolyn was still looking for her idea of the “real thing.” She was drawn to the eclectic and interesting nature of the North Beach area, with its clusters of diverse and intriguing homes, and the interesting personalities who lived there. So she

began her quest to build a fun and lively three-story beach house just a block from the Atlantic. Carolyn knew exactly what she wanted the house to look like and she designed it around her love of the myriad views. Although the initial construction did not go as planned, William Rushing of Rushing Construction, entered to save the day. Originally from Ohio, Carolyn had known that she wanted to live near the ocean ever since she saw it for the first time at

the age of fifteen. Settling in Atlanta as an adult, it took just a few vacations to Amelia Island to seal the deal. After living on the south end, where Carolyn owned a unique pottery shop called “There!”, Carolyn moved her inventory to her friend Robyn Branch’s store, as Robyn wished to diversify her interior design shop to include outdoor items. That’s when InsideOut Home & Garden, located on South 8th Street, was born. With help from Robyn and horticulturist Philip L. Standifer, Carolyn’s home and gardens are always a work in progress— and the work is superb. Naturally, one-of-a-kind Chinese pottery pieces are everywhere in and around the home, but as Carolyn was born

with a unique sense of style, the house is also filled with many unusual pieces of furniture, art, and home goods. She had the house built with an open feel to capture the look of an old beach house, then added modern touches. The zebra wood cabinets, high-style appliances, distinctive color combinations, and even a crystal pirate ship chandelier, stand out from the reclaimed wood floors and wooden grid ceilings. Carolyn’s favorite colors are teal and sunset orange, and she has used various shades of these colors throughout the house, most dramatically in the bedrooms. The bathrooms resemble outdoor showers, imbedded with river rocks, slate, and porcelain instead of traditional tiles. The first floor

sitting room opens to a patio and a spacious outdoor kitchen, which Carolyn uses as a convenient “potting shed,” so to speak. Beyond the patio is her garden, her pride and joy. “I love to weed,” laughs Carolyn. ‘It’s relaxing to me.” She has a happy and easygoing attitude about gardening. “If a plant isn’t doing well in one place, I just move it somewhere else. I love succulents especially, and they love this climate, but I also have lots of herbs, as well as many native plants.”

There are roomy balconies off the front and back of the house, which are breezy and delightful no matter what the season. “You can enjoy the ocean views or watch the deer in Fort Clinch,” says Carolyn. “It’s like living in two different climates at one time, with nature all around. This end of Amelia Island is very different, and very special.” Carolyn Carr has definitely found her “real thing.”

hen Nassau Health Foods opened their in-house café, The Mustard Seed, folks on Amelia Island stood up and applauded. Finally, a health food-style restaurant with great tasting food that actually makes you feel good, because it’s good for you! Café manager and caterer Stephanie Christopher loves her job and her customers, and staff members Wes Goode and Christopher Deeham work closely with Stephanie to create delicious and healthy menu items. I stopped into The Mustard Seed for a late lunch with my friend, Bruce, and the place was hopping, even as late in the day as it was. We were eager to try some of their lunch offerings, and began our meal with a glass of Blueberry Iced Tea, an herbal blend that was thirst-quenching and tasty. I love gazpacho, and, thankfully, that was on the menu that day, a perfect warm-weather soup. It was served ice cold and loaded with fresh garden tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots. We also shared a Veggie Quesadilla, a whole wheat tortilla filled with all my favorite super foods: sweet potatoes, spinach, mushrooms, roasted red peppers, and onions. The quesadilla was served with a fresh tomato and corn salsa and garnished with cilantro and sour cream. This is a scrumptious dish; no wonder it is so popular at The Mustard Seed. I like that the tortilla was lightly browned with a little crunch. Since Christopher offered me a tasting menu, we also got to try a slice of their Spanakopita Quiche, made with spinach and feta cheese. The crust was very nice on this quiche, crispy and flaky, and served at the proper temperature —not too hot—just as quiches should be served. We also split their soon-to-be-famous Turkey Burger, served on toasted Ciabatta bread. This burger was delicious and extremely moist, which is something of a feat, as ground turkey can be dry at times. The meat was flavored with a blackening seasoning and had a good bit of spice to it. I liked that the sandwich had lettuce, tomatoes, sprouts, avocado, and a garlic mayonnaise that paired perfectly with this flavorful burger. We

also got to try two varieties of quinoa salad, one a Southwestern variety and the other a curry. Quinoa is a South American grain that is very high in protein and has a lovely, mild taste and consistency, and can be prepared with many different herbs and other vegetables. Both varieties were delicious! Naturally, I was looking forward to dessert, and after eating such a healthy meal I didn’t have a bit of guilt gobbling down

the Carrot Cupcake with Lemon Cream Cheese Icing. These cupcakes are incredible, and I would suggest getting an extra one to take home with you! The cupcake was moist and sweet, with pineapple, pecans, and coconut added, along with the carrots. The icing was rich and not too sweet. Yummy! The Mustard Seed Café is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch, and also offers catering. They also can accommodate those with gluten-free, lactose-free, vegetarian, or vegan diets. In addition, delicious and healthy dinner entrees are displayed in their deli case, so you can enjoy their food anytime!

GRILLED LAMB CHOPS AND ROMA TOMATOES WITH CASHEW MINT PESTO FOR THE LAMB AND TOMATOES Ingredients: Four 1 ½ inch loin lamb chops Four large Roma tomatoes (not too ripe), halved lengthwise Extra virgin olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper One garlic clove, peeled and cut in half

his year, I finally planted an herb garden, and, as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for! I have so much parsley, basil, and mint that I barely know what to do with it all! Pesto is definitely in order, and, recently, I’ve enjoyed experimenting with different kinds of herbs, nuts, and oils. I have also harvested quite a few Roma tomatoes, and, although tomato sauce graces my weekly dinner menus, I like to grill a few when folks come to visit. Speaking of grilling, summer is my favorite season for lamb chops. I don’t like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen when the weather is hot, and grilled

lamb chops are the most delicious and expedient “company” dinner you can make. With lamb, the flavor is in the meat, so all you need is a little olive oil, salt, and pepper to season them. While my chops and tomatoes are grilling, I can sip a glass of iced tea, sweetened with stevia leaves, also from my herb garden. Perhaps my guests will like something stronger? I can use my herbs to flavor a Mojito, a Long Island Iced Tea, or even a glass of Pinot Grigio. If you don’t have your own garden, be sure to stop by the Fernandina Farmers Market for fresh tomatoes and herbs. Your guests will appreciate it!

Preparation: Cut the tomatoes in half and remove the seeds and pulp gently. Brush the tomatoes and lamb chops with some olive oil, rub with the garlic cloves, then season all with salt and pepper. Heat your grill to medium high, and oil it lightly. Grill the lamb chops for about 5 to 6 minutes on each side for medium rare. For the tomatoes, grill for a few minutes, cut side down, until they get soft. But don’t overcook! Serve the lamb chops and grilled tomatoes with a small condiment bowl of cashew mint pesto. I also like to serve some French bread, which you can also baste with a little olive oil and grill. CASHEW MINT PESTO Ingredients: One bunch Italian parsley One bunch basil One bunch mint 2 cloves peeled garlic ½ light olive oil or grapeseed oil ¾ cup raw cashews Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Preparation: Remove the leaves from the stems of the herbs. Place all ingredients except the salt and pepper in a food processor and blend until smooth. Remove to a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Serve in individual condiment cups.
