so close to home.

Last year, our daughter, Charlotte, fractured her wrist while participating in a track event and needed to have day surgery to set the bone. While it may be an everyday procedure, it’s not every day that you bring a child in for surgery. Our nurses and doctors were all kind and reassuring—especially to us parents, who were probably more nervous than the patient. We also ran into neighbors and acquaintances in the hallways of our local hospital, Baptist Medical Center Nassau, and saw some friends who are part of the corps of auxiliary volunteers. It was a real hometown experience, but, more importantly, the medical care was excellent. Having a vibrant medical community is of vital importance, and we are fortunate on Amelia Island to have a continually growing pool of fine medical professionals so close to home, on Amelia Island, in Camden County, Ga., and in Jacksonville. The growth in our medical community means that an increasing number therapies, treatments, and surgeries are being offered within driving distance—giving locals more options in treatment and, of course, greater convenience. For this our fourth annual Health & Wellness special issue, we have asked some of those local professionals to lend some insight into a variety of medical topics that affect so many people. From differentiating between colds and allergies and keeping our children cavity free to tests that can help detect cancer early, we hope that this issue will help keep you informed on medical topics that are important to all of us. Our thanks to the doctors and specialists who took the time to write these pieces and share a bit of their expertise with our readers. We also try to tap the local health and medical community year-round in our recurring Healthwise column, so please continue to look for more such articles from your local doctors and health professionals in future issues. Also this month, we hope you enjoy a peek into a local home that draws inspiration from the great American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright; a Fernandina Faces column on a friendly and well-known local couple, Susan and David Caples, owners of the fabulous Elizabeth Pointe Lodge; a Backyard Adventure on the outstanding English High Tea experience offered at the Hoyt House; and much more. See you around the island!

My Annual Mammogram:

“They treat patients very well and I would advise anyone to go there.”

200 Annie Cummings of Kingsland

Make Breast Care A Routine For Life Annie Cummings was taking a shower when she felt a lump in her breast. A biopsy revealed she had breast cancer. “My doctor told me the type of cancer I had could be very aggressive if I hadn’t caught it early,” she recalls.

SM

nnual mammograms screenings and monthly breast self-exams are important for the early detection of breast cancer. Southeast Georgia Health System urges you to make breast care a routine for life and schedule a mammogram today.

A

Please note that all mammograms require a physician’s order; insurance is accepted and financial assistance is available to patients who qualify. For more information, call 1-800-537-5142, ext. 5234. Or call your physician’s office to obtain an order and schedule a mammogram. To read more about Annie’s breast cancer experience, or read more breast cancer awareness questions and answers, visit sghs.org.

Q & A with Our Physicians Q: Can I have breast cancer if I have no history of breast cancer in my family? A: The vast majority of breast cancers develop in women with no family history of breast cancer. There are only two known genes that contribute to breast cancer and those are found in a small percentage of women.

HealthyLiving Recognizing the Difference Between Allergy and Cold Symptoms BY LAURA YOUNG

W

ith cold and flu season just around the corner, and an allergy season active year-round, how is a person to distinguish between the two? A visit to an ENT (ear, nose and throat) physician will provide the answer and the proper treatment for whatever it is that ails you. Sore throat, stuffy nose, and watery eyes can be typical cold symptoms, but if the coughing and sneezing persist beyond seven to 10 days, then it could be allergies, according to Joseph H. Bee, D.O., a board-certified otolaryngologist with Southeast Georgia Physician Associates—Ear, Nose and Throat, a strategic affiliate of Southeast Georgia Health System. Dr. Bee specializes in the treatment of medical conditions that affect the ear, nose, throat, sinuses, neck and head. This time of year, many peopl sek treatment for allergies primarily caused by tree and grass pollens, mold spores, and other environmental irritants. Sinus and nasal disorders are also common patient concerns, he said. “If it’s been more than a week and antibiotics have run their course and the patient is still coughing and sneezing, it’s probably allergies, and the patient needs to see an ENT,” Dr. Bee explaines, adding that with allergies, there is more of an itchy and scratchy sensation in the throat, and perhaps a persistent need to clear the throat. Itchy and watery eyes are also an allergy symptom. 9 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2012

Treatment for allergies includes antihistamines many of which are available over the counter, though they can make patients drowsy. “The good thing now is that people have more access to non-sedating medications over the counter,” Dr. Bee said. “We can also prescribe nose sprays, or follow a different course of treatment if needed.” Any person who may have seasonal allergies should see a doctor for a diagnosis and personalized treatment. While some people can be effectively treated by over-the-counter medications, others may require prescription medication to treat their condition. Cavity-Free Children BY LAURIE KITSON, D.M.D.

Wouldn’t it be nice if your child never had a cavity? Is that possible, and what does it take besides good brushing and flossing to make that happen? The first step in preventing childhood decay starts prior to the birth of a child. Mothers should make sure they are free of cavities. A mother’s dental health will directly influence a child’s risk for dental decay. The decay-causing bacteria, called Strep mutans, is transmitted to a child from their mother or primary caretaker when the baby teeth erupt. If a mother has dental decay, the Strep mutans bacteria they transfer to an infant are supercharged to cause cavities. In a mother with no decay, the Strep mutans is less active and less likely to cause decay. Fluoride is the next magic bullet for preventing cavities in children. Children should drink water with fluoride, which allows the teeth to form with stronger enamel. Our local water supply is fluoridated. If you use bottled water, purchase the water for kids that comes with fluoride added. Fluoride toothpaste is recommended for children, as well as professional fluoride treatments every six months. Diet is crucial in preventing decay in children. Any food or drink with sugar or carbohydrates can cause cavities. Limit these foods in your child’s diet. Dilute fruit juices with water and avoid chocolate milk and sodas. Limit sticky foods that can get stuck in the teeth like raisins, fruit rollups, and gummy

bears. Also, be aware that chewable vitamins and some children’s medications are flavored with sugar. Xylitol sugar is the next cavity defense mechanism. This sugar can actually help control cavities. Xylitol is a natural sugar that the bacteria in the mouth can’t use to cause cavities. Exposing a child to Xylitol products from birth will actually decrease the amount of Strep mutans in a child’s mouth and decrease the risk of cavities. Xylitol wipes called Spiffies can be used to wipe out an infant’s mouth prior to them cutting teeth. Older children can be given Xylitol gum, candy, or mints to reduce the risk of cavities. Local health food stores carry Xylitol products. A book called The Power of Xylitol and Xylitol products are available online at www.zellies.com. Only products with 100% Xylitol are recommended, because other added sugars decrease the beneficial effects. Children’s teeth should be brushed two times per day, for two minutes each brushing, and flossed daily. Younger children will need assistance with both. The above simple steps can have lasting benefits for your child’s oral health and establish a strong foundation to prevent dental cavities in the future. Dr. Laurie A. Kitson is a general dentist with Amelia Dental Group, located at 1947 Citrona Drive in Fernandina Beach. For more information, call (904) 261-7181 or visit www.AmeliaDental.com.

Why Put It Off? Colorectal Cancer Screening Can Be a Lifesaver BY WILMA ALLEN

Y

ou may not like to talk about it—or even think about it— but if you are over 50 years old, you should certainly look into it: getting screened for colorectal cancer, a leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in both men and women. The American Cancer Society estimates that the lifetime risk for developing colorectal cancer is about one in 19, with a slightly higher risk for men than women. Unfortunately, there are usually no early symptoms, so screening exams are the only way to detect the disease early, when treatment success rate is 95%. In the 1980’s, before today’s effective screening methods became available, colorectal cancer was far more lethal than it is now. Although various tests are available, a colonoscopy has become the screening exam of choice in recent years because it is so effective. Unlike other exams, colonoscopies don’t just find cancer, they can actually prevent it. Because they are so effective, colonoscopies are covered by most insurance plans and Medicare. Doctors recommend that all adults be screened at age 50, or even earlier if they are at higher risk. If cancer is detected, it can be treated early, and if potential cancers are found, they

can be removed. When the exam is normal and there is no family history, you can usually go for ten years before another exam is recommended. Even though screening is so effective, studies show only about 50% of the people who should be tested actually are. “This is a part of the body that people are sensitive and self-conscience about, so they tend to put off testing – often against their doctors’ advice,” says local gastroenterologist Harvey Phillips, MD. “It’s a shame, because the test can prevent a lot of heartache.” Physicians and nurses in Baptist Nassau’s special gastroenterology laboratory perform over 50 colonoscopies every week using the latest and safest equipment available. They take a friendly team approach to make you feel as comfortable as possible while you take care of your health. If you’re over age 50 and haven’t been tested for colorectal cancer, take action now. Talk to your doctor or call the BorlandGroover Clinic in Fernandina Beach, 904.261.0878. If you don’t have a doctor, call 904.202.2273 or visit baptistprimarycare.net. Wilma Allen is a community relations writer with Baptist Medical Center Nassau. Genetic Testing for Breast Cancer BY SCOT ACKERMAN, M.D.

O

ut of the nearly 230,000 women in the U.S. who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, an estimated 5 to 10 percent of these cases can be traced to abnormal genes inherited from a parent. Most of these genetic mutations are linked to an alteration of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Women with these mutated genes have Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome (HBOC) and are at an increased risk of developing both breast and ovarian cancers. Male carriers of the BRCA genes have a greater risk of developing breast and prostate cancer. The mutations may

also be linked to an elevated risk of melanoma and pancreatic, uterine, and colon cancers. Some “Red Flags” for HBOC include: breast cancer before age 45; ovarian cancer at any age; two or more breast cancers in a family, one under the age of 50; and women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent with breast or ovarian cancer at any age. Genetic testing is performed through a simple blood test. It is not a test for cancer, but it can determine whether or not you have HBOC. Knowing your risk can help you make more informed decisions about your health. Genetic counseling is recommended both before and after genetic testing and is performed by health care professionals qualified to interpret and explain the test results. Women with positive test results have a 33 to 50 percent chance of developing breast cancer and a 50 percent chance of passing the mutation on to their children. When a genetic mutation is positively identified, preventive mastectomy can significantly reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Having both breasts removed before there is any sign of cancer has been shown to decrease a woman’s risk of breast cancer by approximately 90 percent. Surgical removal of the ovaries is also recommended once childbearing is complete. Women who choose not to undergo mastectomy may be candidates for hormonal therapy. Increased surveillance should include monthly self-breast exams starting at age 18, clinical breast exams two to four times a year beginning at age 25, annual mammogram and MRI from age 25, and ovarian cancer screening twice a year starting at age 35. Start dates for screenings may vary depending on the age of family members at diagnosis. Talk to your physician about genetic testing and to learn more visit www.FacingOurRisk.org and www.Myriad.com. Dr. Scot Ackerman is medical director of First Coast Oncology, with offices at 1340 S. 18th Street in Fernandina Beach. Cataract Surgery with Modern Intraocular Lenses BY CHARLES P. ADAMS, JR., M.D.

A

cataract is a natural change occurring inside your eye, a gradual clouding of the lens of your eye that can make your vision less sharp over time. A cataract can be the reason sharp images become blurred, bright colors become dull, or seeing at night is more difficult. The techniques and results of cataract surgery have improved dramatically over the past few years. A small, stitchless incision, along with phacoemulsification, is an excellent method. Phacoemulsification uses a sophisticated ultrasound instrument to break up the cataract and gently remove it from the eye. This advanced technology in equipment has led to increased safety and efficiency. An intraocular lens (IOL) is a plastic lens that is implanted at the time of cataract surgery. It replaces the natural lens to

restore vision. There are several types of lens implants to choose from. A Monofocal IOL is a lens with a single focal point. It is designed to provide distance vision while offering enhanced image quality. With the standard monofocal implant, you will need glasses for near-vision activities after surgery. These activities may include reading, sewing, and dialing a cell phone. Some patients elect monovision (one eye for distance, the other eye for near). A Toric IOL corrects astigmatism. Astigmatism is a focusing problem that occurs when the cornea isn’t round. Before surgery, this is usually corrected with glasses or contact lenses. A traditional IOL does not correct astigmatism. A toric IOL provides significantly improved distance vision and may reduce the need for corrective lenses after surgery.

Presbyopia is the condition in which the lens of the eye loses the ability to focus at near, as when reading. A Multifocal IOL can correct this condition, which eventually affects most people as they age. A Multifocal IOL can restore both distance and near vision, offering the possibilities of little or no dependency on glasses. These premium lenses are an investment some patients choose to make. Patients choose to have cataract surgery based on the degree to which their vision is impaired and how that impairment impacts the quality of life. Decisions on treatment should always be made on an individual basis according to the patient’s needs. The likelihood of recovering more natural vision with cataract surgery is high. Most patients enjoy a rapid recovery of enhanced vision with little disruption to their activities. Dr. Charles P. Adams, Jr. has offices located in Riverside and Fernandina Beach and performs surgery at both locations. For more information, please call (904) 354-2114 to speak to a patient consultant or visit his website at adamseyes.net.

Your Life Starts Now! BY PATTI SHELLY-LOHMAN, AU.D.

our sense of hearing is a vital link to your world—a source of pleasure, information and communication. If you have hearing loss, you can help manage the situation. Hearing loss should not get in the way of enjoying your life. Hearing empowers us and enriches our lives. Hearing enables us to socialize, work, interact, communicate, and even relax. Good hearing also helps to keep us safe, warning us of potential danger or alerting us to someone else’s distress. Hearing is essential for us to be able to live and participate in life more fully. Problems with our hearing may lead to feelings of isolation and even depression. Our hearing provides us with an enormous source of information, some of it obvious and some we barely notice, but when combined, this information forms the bridge between the world and how we interact with it.

Hearing helps us lead our everyday lives with fewer limitations. Many everyday situations can be affected by hearing loss. At work, hearing loss can affect our ability to participate in group meetings, talk on the phone, or follow a conversation in a busy office. During social occasions, it can interfere with chatting with friends, participating in dinner conversation at a restaurant, interacting with grandchildren, or watching television or a movie with others. Hearing is also necessary for our own safety. Sirens and other traffic signals alert us to danger. And good hearing is important for learning, helping us to maintain a high level of concentration so we are able to communicate with instructors and register information accurately. Hearing loss typically means we cannot detect particular sounds compared to people without a hearing loss. There are

many degrees of hearing loss, but it is important to remember that no matter the degree, the problem can be addressed. Some common signs of hearing loss are: difficulty following conversation in noisy environments; swapping the ear you hold the phone to in order to hear better; and having trouble hearing the TV and radio at a volume others can. If you feel you may have some difficulty hearing, it pays to get checked by an audiologist. A consultation doesn’t take long and is completely painless. And nobody today should worry about wearing a hearing device. The days of the big ugly hearing devices are over. Most of today’s hearing solutions are so discreet that they are actually far less obvious than wearing glasses. Patti Shelly-Lohman is an audiologist at Amelia Audiology. October is National Physical Therapy Month BY JIM MARINO, P.T.

E

very October for the past 23 years, Nassau Physical Therapy (NPT) has celebrated National Physical Therapy month, in conjunction with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and its 80,000 members nationwide. The APTA and its members celebrate the many ways physical therapists help maintain and improve your quality of life by restoring and improving your ability to move. APTA President Paul A. Rocker Jr., PT, DPT, MS, says that “beginning October 1 and continuing through November 19, APTA will be hosting its ‘50 Days 50 Ways’ challenge. During this challenge, the APTA will be providing 50 days worth of tips to boomers on how to prevent injury and get and/or stay fit and mobile with the help of a physical therapist. Check them out on Facebook and Twitter!” Rocker also noted that, according to the 2011 AARP Bulletin Survey on Exercise, approximately 7 in 10 adults age 45 and older (71%) are physically active. If you are a baby boomer, physical therapists can help you stay physically active, including helping you deal with common injuries associated with aging, such as tendinitis and meniscus tears as well as the effects of arthritis. As a Baby Boomer who is “slightly” older then 50, I know that it is important to practice what I preach by staying physically active and fit. One of our goals for every NPT patient is to enhance their lifestyle by improving movement and activity,

which includes continuing some form and level of exercise once they are finished with PT. It gives me great satisfaction when a patient leaves skilled PT and continues with our Medical Exercise Training program, joins a fitness center for the first time, or I see them around town and they tell me they are still doing there exercise. Maybe that’s why I see them around town! On the flip side, so many boomers have unhealthy lifestyles, which decrease mobility and limit activity levels. The loss of fitness through becoming too sedentary can lead to debilitating conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mobility disability. An experienced physical therapist can evaluate and treat many mobility disabilities which can be directly associated with postural and movement disorders, and which contribute to loss of balance, difficulty walking, and falls. With that in mind, Nassau Physical Therapy is celebrating PT month by offering those over 50 during the month of October a free musculoskeletal movement and postural evaluation, a balance/ fall risk assessment, or a video gait analysis. From those individuals limited in daily activities seeking to enhance their function, to those that are injured or pursuing higher level of fitness, NPT can help! Jim Marino is a physical therapist and owner of Nassau Physical Therapy, which has served Nassau County for 23 years with offices in Fernandina Beach and Callahan. For more information, call at (904) 277-4449 or visit www.NassauPT.com.

Chairmen Nancy Jones, Linda Legg, and Lynn Meyer are privileged to have the opportunity to benefit the Donna Foundation. The Donna Foundation raises money for First Coast women who are struggling with breast cancer and need financial assistance. Since 2003, over 5500 women have been assisted. Donna Deegan, a three-time breast cancer survivor, is founder and president of The Donna Foundation. All proceeds from raffle tickets, silent auction items, and mulligan sales will be donated to The Donna Foundation. For more information, contact Nancy Jones at nrjbulldog@comcast.net.

The Amelia Farmers Market, formerly known as Fernandina Farmers Market, is now open Saturday mornings from 9am-1pm at their new location at The Shops of Omni Amelia Island Plantation. The Amelia Farmers Market features farm fresh produce, as well as a variety of organic products and specialty foods, gourmet baked goods like crusty breads and delectable desserts, and prepared foods such as jellies, relishes and marinades. The Market also has a wide variety of specialty tropical plants and landscaping plants. For more information, call (904) 491-4872 or visit www.ameliafarmersmarket.com.

arolyn and Kenneth Rowe have been selling artwork for over 40 years, along with their various other enterprises. “We’ve always had something going on,” says Kenneth. And those “goings on” have included owning and running restaurants, hotels, and antique shops in various locations around the U.S. At present, the couple owns and operates Casablanca, a home goods and interior design establishment on Sadler Road. Previously called Gallery of Amelia and located on South 14th Street, Casablanca today offers expanded inventory, including fine art, exceptional furnishings, antiques, and unique gift items. “We lived in Europe for several years,” says Kenneth. “There we developed an appreciation for European art and design. We are eager to share our findings with our Amelia Island friends.” Carolyn’s customers swear that she was born with a good eye for interior design and classical paintings. And when they want a new look for their home, Carolyn is happy to come to their home and make suggestions. “More often than not a home’s décor can be freshened up with a new

painting or two, and by adding some new items to the existing furnishings,” explains Carolyn. “There is usually no need to completely redecorate the home.” And as Carolyn and Kenneth continue to upgrade their stock to include more unusual and interesting home goods, many of their customers come back again and again for Carolyn’s wise advice and designer’s eye, calling her the “Phoebe Howard” of Amelia Island. Casablanca takes on consignment items and also carries a selection of designer fabrics and trims for making pillows and small accent pieces. And, nearly unheard of in this day’s economy, Casablanca offers layaway, so that customers and interior designers can put an item on hold if they need to. For Carolyn, when it comes to the hours spent working in her retail store nearly every day, she just shrugs and smiles. “I’m surrounded by beautiful things. My customers come in to talk about home decorating, which I love. And those customers are also some of my best friends! My store is like my home, and I like being here.” For more information about Casablanca or to schedule an appointment, call (904) 415-1540.

hen Robin Rawls and Elizabeth Rawson purchased a property on Sadler Road as home for their real estate business, Atlantic Properties International, they noticed there was a lot of foot traffic to and from the beach. “This would be a great location for a gift shop!” they both exclaimed, and that was when Coastal Trader was born. Indeed, as visitors from the three nearby hotels started coming in to buy gifts and souvenirs, locals also noticed the activity, and before they knew it, Coastal Trader became a beachy hot spot on Sadler. The vision for the shop was to bring one-of-a-kind items to Fernandina Beach, and supply visitors at neighboring hotels, and Amelia Islanders, with a strolling option for shopping. The store is supporting local craftsman by carrying paintings, frames made from reclaimed barn wood, Adirondack chairs, handcrocheted jewelry, sand-casted ornaments, marble coasters, gift baskets, and their own version of the Coastal Cocktail. “We are always interested in promoting American-made,” says Rawls. Indeed, the women travel extensively and love searching out the “hot” unique items in every market. “We try to keep our prices reasonable,” explains Rawson. “We have something for everyone, from girlfriend items to baby gifts.” Speaking of girlfriends, in the evening, the women also host “Girls Nite,” where friends can shop together while enjoying hors d ‘oeuvres and beverages in a private setting. hen Coca-Cola went public in 1919, the underwriting was handled by two institutions: one connected to J.P. Morgan, and the other to SunTrust Bank. The former took their fee of $110,000 in cash, while the latter, SunTrust’s predecessor, took their fee in shares of Coca-Cola common stock. Thus began a 90-year relationship between SunTrust and Coca-Cola—a relationship enshrined in SunTrust’s sometime nickname, “the Coca-Cola bank.” It was a deal that, after years of compounding, left SunTrust in possession of some 48 million shares of Coca-Cola stock worth more than $2 billion when the bank began selling in 2007. Historically, SunTrust has been a trust company. From its beginning, SunTrust—through its predecessor, Trust Company of Georgia—earned a reputation as being a trust for wealthy families, administering the wills and legacies of their clientele. It is a focus that has carried through to today, where in the State of Florida alone SunTrust manages more than $34 billion in trust assets for its client families. “I am proud of our history,” says Todd Mitchell, a longtime island resident and client advisor overseeing SunTrust’s Private Wealth Office on Amelia. “It provides us with a unique perspective on preserving a family’s wealth and values through multiple generations.” Todd Mitchell is a Registered Representative with SunTrust Investment Services, Inc. SunTrust’s Amelia Island Private Wealth Group resides at 5211 South Fletcher Avenue. For more information, call (904) 491-5969.

t’s hard to miss the stately silhouette of the Elizabeth Pointe Lodge, Amelia Island’s premier beachside bed and breakfast inn, just off South Fletcher Avenue near Main Beach. Innkeepers David and Susan Caples have operated the awardwinning boutique hotel on Amelia Island for almost 21 years. Checking in at the lodge, each guest is likely greeted by Susan, David, or their capable inn manager, Olivia Hoblit. After graduating from college, the pair made a commitment to David’s continuing education in the renowned Hotel Management Program at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Among other jobs, the young couple served as house parents for a sorority house as they worked their way through graduate school. It was good practice for the couple, who would later raise two daughters. Greatly influenced by Norman Simpson, author of the pioneering book, Country Inns and Back Roads, Susan and David set out after graduation to find the to find the perfect place to begin their adventure in the emerging bed and breakfast movement. When they visited Amelia Island, they recognized its great potential as a travel destination. In 1979, they opened their first property, the 1735 House, with a modest five rooms. During their first seven years of operation, they began to design what is now the Elizabeth Pointe Lodge. Katie’s Light, the octagonal house just south of Elizabeth Point Lodge, was their home for many years, and it continues as a popular rental property. It is named for their first daughter, Katie, who was a student at Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville when she died in a tragic accident. Katie was an

organ and tissue donor, and the Caples have made a lifelong commitment to raising money to promote the critical importance of organ donation. The Katie Caples Foundation was started in 1998. The annual Katie Ride, which takes place on Amelia Island each April, was started in 2005. Reminiscing with Susan and David, I asked how they get all the work done. Susan says with a smile: “He’s the boss!” Ever energetic and enthusiastic, Susan is the master of organization, ensuring the rooms are picture-perfect and comfortable, and that, from check-in to check-out, the guest service is impeccable. It is clearly a very successful partnership that has launched this outstanding bed and breakfast inn, as well as two other businesses: a rental property management business and training programs for aspiring innkeepers. Their popular ‘boot camp’ is the first step for many couples thinking of running a bed and breakfast inn. Dave, slim and tan, reminisces about those early days. “It is a different place now. There was no Summer Beach or RitzCarlton. There were not a lot of places to stay. When we first opened, a lot of our business came from the mills in town.” Elizabeth Point Lodge continues to receive recognition from leaders in the travel industry, making Travel + Leisure’s 2012 World’s Best Awards list of top inns and small lodges, and the Conde Nast 2012 Traveler Gold List. Named for their daughter, Beth Ann, who lives and works in Manhattan as a fashion designer, Elizabeth Pointe Lodge— and David and Susan Caples—are a big part of what makes Amelia Island a gem for travelers and hometown folks alike.

in the garden

all hail the queen! The Queen Emma is a show-stopping plant that thrives in our local gardens.

BY BETTY MORRELL

I

was recently introduced to a plant that is so magnificent that it commands attention. I can’t decide if I would like it as a specimen plant or grouped together in a bed to make a statement. I do know that, one way or another, I want this plant in my garden. This impressive plant is the Queen Emma crinum lily (Crinum augustum), a native of Asia. It is said to be native to the Seychelles and Mauritius in the western Indian Ocean, and some references say it is a native of Malaysia. It grows and increases vigorously in suitable conditions, and blooms continuously, but most heavily in the spring and summer. And, yes, we have very suitable conditions for the Queen here on Amelia Island. Not only is this awesome spider lily plant beautiful, it is also very fragrant. Better yet, it re-blooms, so you can enjoy this beauty time and again. The amount of sunlight the Queen receives will govern the color of its magnificent foliage. In full sun, the strap-like leaves are a gorgeous purple; with filtered sun, they have a light purple blush. Fortunately, the blooms will do well under both conditions, so in

TIP O F T HE M O N T H When planting the Queen Emma or any crinum lilies, provide soil with plenty of humus. Set the bulbs about six inches under the surface, giving them ample space to develop, since these “bulbs” will grow quite large. Mulch well for cold freezes.

either setting, this is a wonderful addition to any garden. Its flowers are enormous and spidery and grow in clusters of 12 or more on a stem. They are purple-pink when in bud, with the upper petal surface— which is revealed as the flower opens —in a nicely contrasting white-pink color. The individual blossoms can be eight inches across, and a cluster on an established plant can be well over a foot wide and almost as high. Now you see why people stop to take pictures of these beauties: the plant is a real show-stopper. Picture this: a specimen Queen Emma surrounded by a bed of blue Pacific junipers, or, better yet, a bed of Queen Emmas bordered with beautiful contrasting holly ferns. Of course, the

41 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2012

holly ferns like the shade, so you would have to plant the Queen Emmas in filtered sun and settle for the blush of purple on the leaves. On the other hand, you could make a beautiful tropical bed showcasing the Queen Emma, perhaps with some of the Three Sisters cordylines (the variety reddish in color) on one side and some variegated gingers on the other side to create a nice contrast in color. A member of the Amaryllis family, the crinum lily is a hardy, evergreen plant grown from a bulb. When fully grown, the plant can grow six to eight feet in height with a six-foot spread. As the plant matures, it will also produce more than one stalk of buds, attached to a short trunk-type base with rosettes of beautiful foliage. The leaves can be three feet long and four to six inches wide. The Queen is slow-growing, but produces many daughters, which can be graciously given to your gardening buddies as gifts. As always, you can send any of your gardening questions to me at bamorrell@aol.com. Until next time, Happy Gardening!

A GREAT AMERICAN HOME BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTOS BY DAVID BURGHARDT, ISLAND PHOTOGRAPHY

T

his house is not like its neighbors. Tony and Sue Jarzyna’s Amelia Island house is clearly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s distinctive architectural style known as the Prairie Style. It is a true showplace, with a home site that is perfectly suited to it. Indeed, with its location adjacent to a protected wetlands, there is no other structure in sight to interfere with the dramatic horizontal lines of the house, which fits snugly into its lush environment.

A massive brick wall with fireplace serves as a dramatic centerpiece of the home and allows for separation, while providing an open flow of space. 43 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2012

Tony Jarzyna is an architect who has designed houses on Amelia Island and the Jacksonville area for more than 20 years. Sue Jarzyna, an attorney, works for an island bank. When the couple decided to make their home on Amelia Island, they chose a site on Long Point at Amelia Island Plantation. Tony Jarzyna’s family hails from the Chicago area, where many of Wright’s masterpiece homes are found. Jarzyna has always been fascinated by Wright’s unique design style and utilized much of his acquired knowledge in the island home he designed and built himself. He grew up in the Miami area and aspired to be an architect from an early age. Throughout his career, he has been www.AmeliaIslander.com

fortunate enough to work with some of the finest architects in the world. The gradual slope leading to the entrance of the home creates a stage for the dramatic portico and front door. Approaching the house, one is struck by the broad hip roof and six-foot overhangs on each side of the entrance. The large overhangs protect the wall surfaces and shield the windows from direct sunlight. The entrance is dramatic, and the front door is typical of Wright’s leaded glass designs. Earth tones dominate both the exterior and interior. The house is symmetrical, and, after passing through the entry area, there is a wing on the right that houses Tony’s Frank Lloyd Wright-style office/studio. To the left is a guest room

and Sue’s office. Tony’s office offers many eye-catching details, including an amazing variety of granite tiles used on the floor. Tony Jarzyna smiles as he relates the story of saving the many samples of stone from a dumpster, and then creating a floor utilizing each of the tiles. One is acutely aware of the geometry in each and every detail of this house. As in many Wright-inspired designs, each space leads fluidly to another. The arts and crafts style millwork creates interesting spaces throughout the home. Entering the kitchen and living area from the front hall, one is struck by the dramatic exposed brick chimney, which separates the kitchen and the living room. Each side incorporates a different design. It took 18,000 bricks to create the centerpiece of the home.

A Wright-inspired home demands minimal, well-designed furniture and lots of integrated built-ins. Stickley furniture placed throughout the house blends perfectly with the buttery oak woodwork. In the early 20th century, the Stickley brothers determined that furniture should be natural, functional, and simple. Their designs in oak are a perfect complement to a house inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. Likewise, handsome mission-style dining room furniture from Sawbridge Studios in Chicago fits perfectly into the dining area. Tony also collaborated with many of the project’s skilled craftsmen to create the unique details to complement the architectural design. The stunning Jarzyna home has been featured in the prestigious Florida Architecture Magazine and is one of 20 designed by Tony Jarzyna on Amelia Island. Each of the homes he designs is unique and ideally suited to its owner and its environment, and none more so than his own home. Its design, setting, and detailed furnishings pay homage to a great American architect, creating a truly great American home on Amelia.

Jack & Diane’s With unique and clever dishes and an eclectic tasting menu, Jack & Diane’s is a welcoming family-run restaurant in downtown Fernandina Beach. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

F

ew restaurant owners and chefs have the enthusiasm of Lisa Jones, head of the family-run Jack & Diane’s on Centre Street. The restaurant’s five-page menu reflects Jones’ love for cooking, traveling, and family. Named for her grandparents’ favorite love song, Jack & Diane’s features many of her grandmother’s personal recipes. On a recent afternoon, my friend Terry and I decided to stop into the restaurant for lunch, and to take a look at their gallery of photos, paintings, and posters. Celebrating their fourth year in business, Jack & Diane’s has expanded their menu to include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and catering, including unique and clever dishes such as crepes, bowls of stew, and appetizers with worldly influences. We let our server, Jim, offer some suggestions and we started off our meal with Bruschetta, and a dish called Stella, artichokes stuffed with tomato, onion, basil, red pepper, blue cheese, and balsamic glaze. The Bruschetta had a lovely tomato pesto topping sprinkled with goat cheese. Terry and I each had a glass of Sir Perry Pear Cider and Kopparberg Strawberry Cider. What a nice treat! Just barely sweet and sparkling, they were wonderfully thirst-quenching on a warm day.

Jack & Diane’s tasting menu allows diners to experience several different dishes at a low price. We wanted to try everything because it looked so good, but decided to order Bow Thai Salad, Black Bean Cake Salad, Jacques Special Crepe, plus Shrimp & Grits. Wow. The Bow Thai Salad was a bed of greens tossed with Thai peanut chicken, mango salsa, feta cheese, onions, and trail mix with crema dressing. The chicken was very tender, the greens fresh, and I loved the crunchy nuts and fruits of the trail mix—a creative combination of color and flavors. Our Black Bean Cake Salad was a spicy homemade black bean cake sitting atop a bed of greens, with tomatoes, onions, trail mix, and croutons, with a creamy cilantro dressing. It made a hearty vegetarian entrée. I love that Jack & Diane’s makes crepes! Our Jacques Special Crepe would be a wonderful offering for any time of the day. It is filled with a luscious blend of cheeses, and topped with smoked salmon, capers, tomatoes, onion, and tapenade. And the Shrimp & Grits was Terry’s favorite, featuring coarse, stoneground grits topped with tender shrimp and stewed in a sweet tomato base with onions and peppers. While we nibbled on our entrees, we sampled some of Jack & Diane’s microbrew beer varieties. I was amazed at the selection of interesting beer at Jack & Diane’s! We tried I.C. Light Mango Beer, Tangerine Wheat Beer, Monte Python Holy Ale, and Hebrew Messiah Nut Brown Ale. All were very tasty, indeed, but I think my favorite was the Monte Python, which was very delicate for ale, and perfect for someone like me who doesn’t drink beer very often. Lisa then brought us a bowl of bread pudding with whipped cream, which featured apples and berries in a delicious, warm custard. A yummy dessert that was just sweet enough. Jones joked that several of her customers order this bread pudding for breakfast, and I could certainly see why. Jack & Diane’s is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they are available for special events and catering for all occasions. The restaurant also features a gift shop and artwork by local artists and family members.

Tea Time!

Enjoy a fabulous English Tea at Hoyt House – right here on Amelia Island BY WILMA ALLEN • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” ~ Henry James, Portrait of a Lady, 1880.

“W

e love vacationing on Amelia Island – there’s always so much to do!” said the three girls from California sitting at the table next to ours. Their plan for the day was to catch some rays at the beach, then set off on an Amelia Island pub crawl. But all that would have to wait as they polished off the rest of their truffled wild mushroom tartlets, poached shrimp and cucumber rounds, salmon mousse pinwheels, and exotic teas. Maybe one more chocolate covered strawberry would hit the spot? Or perhaps another Mimosa or Bellini Cocktail? It was English Tea at the elegant Hoyt House Inn. For the Californians, it was a refreshing breather in an action-packed

The Hoyt House Inn, located on Atlantic Avenue near historic downtown Fernandina.

day; for my friend and me, a special lunch on a quieter day. Whatever the occasion, tea time at the Hoyt House is elegant, sophisticated, and fun—and a rare treat for all the senses. Ancient oaks and shady porches surround the Victorianera mansion, built around 1905 by businessman Fred Willis Hoyt. Inside are all the elaborate features you expect in Victorian architecture, beautifully polished and preserved. Gorgeous flower arrangements adorn sculpted tables and the

original mahogany fireplaces. Antique vases, statues, paintings, books, and curiosities dazzle under crystal chandeliers. Treats for the ears, as well as eyes, include a virtual pianist, who tickles the keys engagingly on a player piano in the parlor, and Kiwi, a perky lovebird in a splendid antique cage. When they purchased the Inn two years ago, Myrta Defendini and Deborah Gold were determined to combine the grandeur of Fernandina’s Golden Age with all the luxuries and conveniences that discerning travelers expect today. The Hoyt House has a lovely pool and patio, a pub-style bar where guests enjoy cocktails and conversation, and even the ‘Nice Aft’, a 39-foot yacht in Fernandina Harbor for private cruising and overnight stays. Since the Hoyt House does not serve dinner and its ‘breakfasts to order’ are reserved for overnight guests, English Tea is about the only time the public can enjoy the inn’s gracious style and ambiance. Served in the sunny dining room, the ceremony begins with a fragrant, warm hand towel for freshening up. Next, a special display box is presented with selections of exotic teas. You can take a whiff of each and learn its history before making your choice. I chose a Chinese oolong with jasmine-infused pearls, which I was impressed to learn are “leaves and an unopened bud, which, when added to water, majestically unfurl, releasing their delicate scent and flavor.” Tea is accompanied by yummy homemade crumpets and scones, thick jams and clotted cream, and a splendid assortment of gourmet sandwiches, tarts, fruits, quiches, cakes, and more. All are served with precision and panache. If exotic teas aren’t enough to entice you, everything else surely will. With their combined vision, hard work, and creative flair, Myrta and Deborah have created another wonderful tradition on Amelia Island. English Tea at Hoyt House is a great opportunity to enjoy the island’s rich past, as well as its very agreeable present. It is available Wednesday through Sunday from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m., but reservations are required. Private tea parties can also be arranged. Call (904) 277-4300 for information or visit HoytHouse.com. In the understated words of Henry James, it makes for quite an “agreeable hour.”
