Each November in the Islander, we present our annual holiday gift-buying guide. By spotlighting some of the wonderful items found at our local shops, we hope you can sit back with a cup of coffee or tea and find some special gift ideas. Like us, you might just decide to skip the long road trip to the big-city shopping mall, with its frenetic pace, sensory bombardment, and fast food folly, and shop locally instead. By frequenting our local shops, you get friendly, personal service and terrific shopping, not to mention that you’re supporting your neighbors who are local merchants. Of course, running into friends is another benefit. But, regardless of our shopping pace and the size of our list, if we can keep things in the proper perspective and give our gifts from the heart, we’ll remember to leave time to focus on the true meaning of the season for each of us. It’s a season to be grateful for the gifts of family, friendship, and community. Speaking of community, in our Island Home column this month, we feature the 2012 Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour, an important fundraiser for this exceptional community treasure. It promises to be another exciting year, with new events and a fun-filled weekend. Our dear friend and frequent contributor, Jan Davis, put so much energy into this important fundraiser for the museum, and everyone who knew her will be remembering her with love and gratitude at this year’s event. Many generous volunteers and donors are working hard to make this much-anticipated event the best one to date, and we hope that everyone will come out and enjoy it. In another creative community undertaking, the Island Art Association and Baptist Nassau have teamed up to provide “art therapy” for patients. Read about how this wonderful new program combines the power of creativity with the power of healing. And, as you begin planning your big holiday meals, check out this month’s “Island Entertaining” column, where Bob Montgomery of Amelia Liquors shares some wines that pair well with your favorite holiday dishes. And what about when you’ve finished reading the entire issue? Well, then there’s even more, as this month we launch our new Islander Blog, with up-to-date information on all of the island happenings. Karen Miller is helping us to scour the island for interesting goings-on, both old and new, so go to www.ameliaislander.com for the latest. See you around the island!

AMELIA ISLAND ANNUAL COOKIE TOUR OF INNS
THE ART OF DINING PREMIERS ON AMELIA ISLAND In mid-November, Memphis artist Joy Bateman will be premiering her latest cookbook, The Art of Dining on Amelia Island. The Friends of the Library will sponsor a presentation and dinner at Slider’s Seaside Grill, one of the book’s featured restaurants, on Thursday, November 15 at 6 p.m. The cost is $30 per person for the presentation and buffet dinner, and tickets can be purchased at the Nassau County Public Library in downtown Fernandina Beach. On Friday, November 16th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., the Book Loft on Centre Street will sponsor a book release party, featuring food and wine from featured restaurants. Bateman will be available to sign copies of her book at both events. “Perhaps because Amelia Island is so intimate, and unique, it has grown very dear to my heart,” says Bateman. “The people make all the difference. Amelia Island has a community to be proud of—great cuisine and kind people. As a foodie and food writer, what more could one ask for?” Inspired by her visit to the island, Bateman created the illustrations and chose a variety of featured recipes. For more information visit www.joysartofdining.com.
On Saturday, November 17, from noon until 5 p.m., catch the spirit of the season at the Fifth Annual Amelia Island Bed and Breakfast Holiday Cookie Tour, hosted by the Amelia Island Bed and Breakfast Association. Participants are invited to experience a tasty afternoon as eight of Amelia Island’s classic inns and charming bed and breakfasts dress up in their festive holiday finery and open their doors to the public. A signature cookie will be featured at each inn, along with a recipe to take home. The inns will display holiday decorating ideas and offer historical tidbits, as guests peek inside the area’s prettiest and unique bed and breakfast establishments. Horse-drawn carriage rides will be available in the Historic District, as well as trolley rides to the inns at the beach. Maps are marked on each ticket and available at each inn. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased at any of the Amelia Island Bed and Breakfast Inns, the Purple Dove Resale Center in Yulee, the Amelia Island Visitors Center, Nassau County Public Library (downtown Fernandina Beach), and the Chamber of Commerce at Gateway to Amelia. A portion of the proceeds from ticket and cookbook sales will benefit Micah’s Place, the only certified domestic violence center serving Nassau County.
ELIZABETH POINTE LODGE RECEIVES TOP AWARD Elizabeth Pointe Lodge has been listed in Travel & Leisure’s 2012 World’s Best Awards, as one of the top inns and small lodges in the continental United States. The awards were published in the August 2012 issue, on www.travelandleisure. com, and in their digital editions. Every year, Travel & Leisure readers vote on their favorite hotels, resorts, spas, airlines, cruise lines, tour operators, rental car agencies, and more, in the publication’s “World’s Best Awards” survey. The honor is considered a testament to how well various establishments serve Travel & Leisure readers as they explore the world. For more information about Elizabeth Pointe Lodge call: (904) 277-4851, or visit their web site at: www.elizabethpointelodge.com.

andra Baker-Hinton was an accomplished artist long before she opened the Amelia SanJon Gallery on Ash Street in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. She is a watercolorist primarily, yet she also works in acrylics. In addition, she creates one-of-a-kind jewelry and “sea critter” ornaments by fusing recycled glass. Nicknamed “the Turtle Lady,” the artist is a naturalist whose photography and nature stories will soon be part of an upcoming book. So when does this busy woman have time to run a gallery? For Baker-Hinton, it’s all part of her life, as nature inspires her paintings and her creativity inspires others to appreciate the natural world. As a member of the Fort Clinch Sea Turtle Volunteers, Baker-Hinton helps protect endangered sea turtle nests. She is also an excellent speaker who brings her love of nature to the community. Since opening the gallery in 2007, Baker-Hinton has especially enjoyed spotlighting local artists, with items such as nature pieces, photography, pottery, and vintage jewelry. In fact, the gallery has something for everyone,
from greetings cards and small gift items to large scale paintings and sculptures. Baker-Hinton also loves to engage customers and visitors by encouraging them to read her blog about photography and the goings-on around the island, from her sea turtle meanderings to even local entertainment. She writes with an enthusiastic style: “Sea turtle hatching is about to start! Then things will really be rocking and rolling!” Baker-Hinton does many pieces on commission, including three large paintings that hang in a restaurant at Disney World. Locally, her work has been chosen to represent Amelia Island’s yearly Shrimp Festival, and she has offered many painting classes over the years. “A love of the outdoors, inspired by growing up in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee, guides me and becomes the underlying theme used throughout my work,” says Baker-Hinton. “Whether working in an abstract or more realistic style, the shapes, forms, colors, and textures in my work reflect our natural environment.” For more information about the Amelia SanJon Gallery, call (904) 491-8040.

hen Joel Shapiro graduated from Jacksonville University with a B.S. in finance, he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers as a pitcher. You’d think that working as a professional athlete would be every young man’s dream job, but Shapiro realized it was not the route he wanted to take in life. With his finance degree and a strong desire to start his own business, Shapiro was drawn to the insurance industry, realizing that most people need guidance in that area. He opened his first office entirely from scratch in 1990. Today, Shapiro Insurance Group has three locations in Jacksonville and one in Fernandina Beach. Shapiro, who lives with his wife, Sylvia, and four children at the beaches in the River City, splits his time between his Jacksonville Baymeadows office and the Amelia Island office. “I love the people here,” says Shapiro. “Fernandina Beach is a unique and eclectic community.” Shapiro attributes his success to the company’s superior customer service, getting to know their clients personally, and going beyond their expectations. For home, auto, business, or life insurance, Shapiro’s agents do all the work for their customers, providing quotes from multiple insurance companies so that their clients can make the most informed decisions. “Our goal is to ensure that you have peace of mind in knowing you, your family, and your business have the right insurance coverage in case an unexpected accident or other disaster occurs without warning,” says Shapiro. For more information, call (904) 277-2135.
hen The Plantation Shop opened in 1978, Bonnie Tennille set a high standard for great products, relationship building, and strong customer service at her charming and eclectic antique store. After her sudden passing, her son, Wilson Tennille Jr., continues with those same standards intact. With retail in his blood, Tennille is proud of the business his mother built, and continues to make The Plantation Shop a favorite Amelia Island shopping destination. In the last three years, The Plantation Shop has expanded in to three buildings to include a large selection of antiques, furniture, home accessories, and gifts. “We try to have something for everyone here,” says Tennille. “We work hard to keep our inventory fresh and current.” But for Tennille, carrying on The Plantation Shop tradition is all about their customers, as well as their loyal staff, who are not just employees, but also part of the family. “Continuing with the founding principles that Bonnie set up when she first opened the store is very important to us,” explains Tennille. Tennille grew up on Amelia Island and enjoys being back on the island. “Our store has been an Amelia Island tradition for 34 years,” says Tennille. “It’s an honor and a privilege to carry on the tradition. We look forward to seeing everyone at the shop.” For more information about The Plantation Shop, call (904) 261-2030.

Baptist Medical Center Nassau Partners with the Island Art Association to create an inspired hospital environment.
AR T

n years past, medical facilities have been known for their sterile environments, but Baptist Medical Center Nassau is changing all that. Baptist Nassau President Stephen Lee was impressed with the inspiring ideas of Pat Hausauer, finance director for the hospital. Partnering with the Island Art Association, Hausauer headed up a project to hang local art and photography on the walls of the main corridors of the hospital. And, to the delight of patients, families, and even staff members, Hausauer’s art therapy concept is working. When a loved one enters a hospital for any reason, whether a minor injury or major surgery, family members often spend many hours waiting and worrying. “We wanted to make the hospital brighter and more lively,” says Hausauer. “For people
Pat Hausauer, Marlene Strobach, Georganna Mullis, and Lynette Holmes
who are strolling the halls, the art gives people something else to think about, something to look at and focus on.” Hausauer called the Island Art Association, a non-profit cooperative of local artists in Fernandina Beach and Nassau County. She told them her idea and was put in touch with
artist Marlene Strobach, who is in charge of outside exhibitions. Strobach, along with Georganna Mullis and Lynette Holmes, reached out to members of the Island Art Association to provide art and photography for the hospital walls. “We tried to choose pieces that would reflect the island,” says Strobach. “So far we’ve gotten some wonderful comments, and have even sold a painting already.” What came as a surprise to everyone was how much joy the art has brought to the hospital’s staff members, whose work hours can often be stressful and challenging. The art was put on display in late September, a task that is larger than it looks. With help from artists Paul Massing and Jim McKinney, along with hospital associates Kim Nelson and Matt Clayton, an opening reception was held in October, where the art therapy project was well received by the public. Ten percent of the art sales will be donated to the hospital by the Island Art Association. But the art therapy project isn’t the only healing therapy begun by Baptist Nassau this year. A pet therapy undertaking is in the works. “So far we have two dogs,” says Hausauer. “But we’ll eventually have four animals trained for the program.” The dogs wander through the patients rooms with their trainers, available to any patients who would like a visit. “The patients love seeing the dogs at the hospital. They lift their spirits,” says Hausauer. Music therapy is also a new program instituted by the hospital. A harpist plays in the lobbies throughout the week, and Hausauer is looking to bringing in other types of music that would aid in the healing process of patients and family members. “There are other art projects we are thinking about, too,” says Hausauer, who sees firsthand how the various therapies are making an impact on everyone at the hospital. “If art and music can take a patient’s mind off his or her illness, or maybe a procedure they’re having, that adds quite a bit to the healing environment.” For more information about the art and photography at Baptist Medical Center Nassau, call the Island Art Association at (904) 261-7020. For information about the hospital’s art, music, and pet therapies call (904) 202-2000.

royal gardens The Empress dogwood, the Majesty rose rose, and other new plants add splendor to your Amelia Island garden. BY BETTY MORRELL
I
t’s that time of year again when new plants for this season and next season are released. With the weather comfortable for planting, it’s time to start planning on what you would like to see in your garden this coming spring, or to enjoy during the rest of the fall and winter seasons. So many of us have loved the dogwood tree, but haven’t been able to grow them well on Amelia Island, unless they are planted under a live oak, and then they will go dormant in the winter. Happily, a new dogwood tree called Empress of China dogwood (Cornus augustata Elsbry) is now available. This wonderful new tree is an evergreen and it is graceful but vigorous, with loads of flowers. In early summer, each branch will have up to 150 creamy white blooms that will eventually transform into translucent strawberrylike fruit. The Empress of China will add light to your partly shaded garden. The Empress grows to 15 to 18 feet tall and 13 to 15 feet wide. Plant it in welldrained garden soil, fertilize in early spring, and water as needed. You do not have to prune this tree.
TIP O F T HE M O N T H When planting new shrubs, plants, or trees, make sure to dig a hole at least twice as wide as the width of the pot, fill it with water, and place the plant in the hole. Then, backfill with dirt, keeping the plant one to two inches above soil level, water again, and add more soil if needed before mulching.
A beautiful, disease-resistant shrub rose named the Majesty shrub rose produces lovely, deep-red, velvety semi-double blooms. It re-blooms from the spring through the fall. It is an evergreen shrub that is hardy to zero degrees. You can use the Majesty shrub rose as an accent plant, a hedge, as part of a mass planting, or in a container. Plant them in full sun. The Majesty shrub rose will grow three feet tall and three feet wide, and it is a moderateto-fast grower. Plant the Majesty shrub rose in well-drained garden soil. Wait until after the first bloom cycle, then apply fertilizer after the first wave of
41 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2012
flowering. Do not fertilize it late in the summer. Prune it in early spring when shoots begin to emerge, and deadhead it during the growing season. Amistad Salvia is a very pretty new perennial that has dark purple flowers with almost black calyx. It blooms steadily from spring until the first frost. This lovely plant is solidly built and it has a more densely foliated then other types of guaranitica. As a bonus, the flowers attract lots of butterflies and hummingbirds. This plant is hardy to 23 degrees, is drought-tolerant, heattolerant and, of course, can be planted in your butterfly garden. Amistad Salvia will grow three to four feet high and three feet wide. It grows rapidly in the spring and summer, and it will take full sun to partial shade. Plant it in well-drained garden soil, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer each spring, cut it back to three inches in early spring to maintain its shape, and water it regularly. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

he sixth annual Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour will take place on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1, kicking off the holiday season on Amelia. This year includes a new restaurant venue, Joe’s 2nd street Bistro, and an exciting new event, “Creating Christmas with Brett.” Each year, organizers strive to feature unique Christmas décor in carefully selected historic homes in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. Area decorators add their special touches to five spectacular homes, open to the public exclusively for this event. Well-known Jacksonville decorator Phoebe Howard, founder of Mrs. Howard, will send a team to decorate one of the houses this year. Other decorators include Donna Haddock of Designing Women; Larry Miller of Island Flower and Garden;

the staff at The Plantation Shop; Caudie Barrie; and Carol Smith. The talented decorators promise an interesting mix of very traditional Christmas décor and some interesting little twists to make the holidays new and interesting. “This event is the primary fundraiser for our museum each year,” explains Jennifer Harrison, chairman of the 2012 tour. “It has become more and more difficult to attract and find grant money. If we want to continue to offer the highest level of programming, exhibitions and outreach, we must get community support for the museum’s annual tour.” Organizers are pleased to partner with the new owners of Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro, Ricky Pigg and his wife, Mari, who will be offering a wonderful luncheon menu. The restaurant’s charming décor includes the paintings of Ricky’s father, well-known local artist

Doo Wop’s BEST 50’S DINER
For true diner treats—done right—and a fun night out, Doo Wop’s is the place. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
O
ne of my favorite nights out is a traditional dinner and a movie, the kind reminiscent of Happy Days and Dobie Gillis, if anyone out there remembers those classic television shows. On Amelia Island, the Doo Wop’s Best 50’s Diner is the only place you can get true diner treats like burgers, fries, and shakes, right next to our favorite movie theater, Carmike, located on South 14th Street. My friend, Terry Smith, goes to the movies every week, so we decided to meet for an early dinner at the Doo Wop before the movie started. We began our meal with a couple of Coca Colas, served in diner-style tumblers, and a plate of Fried Green Beans. Here’s a modern twist on 50’s diner fare—a plate of perfectly battered fried and crispy green beans served with ranch dressing for dipping. Delicious! Terry was eager to try the Doo Wop’s Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich served with Onion Rings, and for me, I wanted more of a dinner, so I ordered the Fried Pork Chop served with Sausage Gravy, Sweet Potato Fries, and Collard Greens. Philly Cheese Steak is hard to master, but the Doo Wop gets it right. There must be a good portion of steak and it must be cooked quickly at high heat in order to stay moist and tender. Bingo! And the Doo Wop serves the steak heaped into a warm sub roll that is soft and buttery, with lots of sautéed onions, mushrooms, and peppers, with cheddar cheese melted all over the top. They also serve a condiment cup of red pepper relish. which adds a nice bite and acidic freshness to the dish. The fried onion rings are served with something called “Boom Boom Sauce,” a spicy dipping sauce that is similar to remoulade. The fried pork chop is like a fritter, crunchy and tender, served with homemade sausage gravy that has diced red peppers added to it, a nice touch. The sweet potato fries were crispy as well, and the collard greens were Southern-style scrumptious, slow simmered with bacon. One of the things I love about the Doo Wop is that they offer fourteen side dishes you can have with your meals; some are included with the dish, others are extra, but lots of times I want different things with my
dinners. A few days earlier I ordered their wonderful Hebrew National Hot Dog with Curly Fries and Cole Slaw, which was freshly made. I also like ordering mashed potatoes and gravy, or applesauce, or even beans and rice instead of fries. That’s what real diner food is all about! Even with that filling dinner, I still ordered a Chocolate Malt Shake for dessert. Terry, who claims that he’s not that fond of sweets, practically arm-wrestled me for half of my shake, and exclaimed that he had forgotten how wonderful an authentic
diner milkshake is, topped with chocolate syrup, real whipped cream, and even a cherry. Served with two straws, it was like date night between two good friends. Our server, Cindy, made sure we had plenty to eat and boxed up our leftovers just in time to make our movie, a nice evening out for any night of the week. Owner Lisa Deringer and her son, Jason, are cooking up some true diner favorites at Doo Wop for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They grind their own coffee beans, scoop their own ice cream, and always greet their customers with good, old-fashioned, 50’s-style hospitality.

Wine
for the
Thanksgiving Table Finding great wines to complement your Thanksgiving meal is no problem. BY BOB MONTGOMERY
I
t’s your year to host Thanksgiving dinner. No problem. You’ve done turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, your aunt’s green bean casserole, and even dessert. This year, however, two of your guests are—gasp—wine lovers! Now what? Don’t panic, it’s no big deal. There are a lot of great options available. First, no matter what kind of hors d’oeuvres you’re planning to serve, start with a sparkling wine. It’s the perfect way to kick off the festivities. It can be champagne, cava, or prosecco – all will work just great. Get a couple of the best bottles you can afford and start the meal off right. French champagnes like Veuve Clicquot, Moet, or Piper-Heidsieck are all outstanding. If you prefer domestic, look for Roederer Estate, “J”, or Chandon – all great choices and less expensive than the French champagnes. A Bosco Del Merlo prosecco would also work very well and is even less expensive. Whichever you choose, be sure it’s well-chilled prior to your guests’ arrival. For dinner, some guests will prefer red, others white, so why not serve both? Classic white wines to offer would be chardonnay or sauvignon blanc. While I’m normally not a big fan of big, oaky chardonnays, there are some chardonnays that work very well. The Joel Gott unoaked chardonnay is wonderful, with great fruit, and it is not expensive. The 2009 Domaine Talmard chablis from France is an outstanding French chardonnay that is very reasonably priced. Others might include Sonoma-Sutrer, or 2010 Elizabeth Spencer, a boutique winery that makes great chardonnays. Sauvignon blancs are usually a bit more fruity, many with a citrus hint that goes well with stuffing and cranberry sauce. Cliff Lede, Decoy, and Silverado would be some
excellent choices, as would a Clarendelle from France, which is more Semillon-based with sauvignon blanc added. We tasted this recently at the shop, and it was extremely well received. How about reds? There are so many choices here. Pinot noir is my personal favorite, as it goes well with almost everything on your Thanksgiving table. Both California and Oregon produce excellent pinots. Etude, Benton Lane, Lemelson, and La Crema are all great choices and reasonably priced. Another one of my favorites is red zinfandel. This wine can be fruity, spicy, soft, or full-bodied, but all work with the components of the Thanksgiving table. Try the Edmeades, Rosenblum, or the Joel Gott Napa. I’m really not a big fan of cabernet with turkey, but merlots can work very well because they tend to be softer and have fewer tannins. St. Clement and Decoy both make wonderful merlots that would go very well with everything being served. If you must have something cabernet-based, try a Bordeaux blend, something with cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and cabernet franc. The Steltzner claret would be a great choice and is extremely well-priced for a great Napa blend. There are also French Bordeaux. Look for something from the “right” bank; these are usually merlot-based blends, so they are, again, softer and less tannic.
It’s now dessert time. Of course, if you have a bottle or two of old Port, by all means break it out. A French Sauternes would be great. The Bouchaine Winery’s Bouche d’Or is a terrific dessert wine. These wines are almost syrupy and are very sweet, just perfect with pecan or pumpkin pie and a great finish to your meal. Remember, there are really very few “wrong” wines, so don’t be intimidated. Today’s mantra with regard to wine is “drink what you enjoy and like.” Enjoy the holidays, and enjoy your wine!
Bob Montgomery is the wine buyer at Amelia Liquors North, located next to Publix. He does a free wine tasting every Friday afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m. 64 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2012
