Our homes are also extensions of our personalities—perhaps even a window into our inner lives—and it is possible to learn a great deal about someone from the place where they live.

”
When our annual “Home & Design” special issue comes around each year, we are always very pleased because it is one of our favorite issues. Establishing a home you love is one of life’s major achievements, and creating a peaceful, comfortable environment in which to raise a family or enjoy retirement is an integral part of life. A home should be a sanctuary from the storms of the world, a place where we relax, recharge, and pursue the things that interest us most. Our homes are also extensions of our personalities—perhaps even a window into our inner lives—and it is possible to learn a great deal about someone from the place where they live. When creating a home for ourselves, we make important decisions about the location of the home, the style of the house, whether we want a porch or a patio, a large yard, no yard, garage space for hobbies or extra room for cars or boats, and on and on. Then come all the decisions about the interior of the home: layout, colors, bathrooms, kitchens, and however we choose to allocate the space. We have compared it in the past to creating a work of art, and, for many of us, it is, although most of our homes remain works-in-progress for quite some time! Fortunately, the work of creating our masterpiece is a rewarding adventure in itself. For most of us, making our home on Amelia Island was the most important decision we made, and the current state of our house is a little less important than the beautiful place where we live. In this issue, we are happy to share interesting, new ways to update your home with the latest interior trends, recommended by some of our favorite local experts. We also have the opportunity to feature two of the many extraordinary homes that are found on Amelia Island. In the first, Pam and Steve Simmons tore down their ranch-style house on a piece of property they loved to build a beautiful home that enjoys expansive views of Egan’s Creek and provides the perfect place for enjoying their family. In the second, Duchess and Gary Glaser found a lovely spot overlooking the ocean and the golf course at Amelia Island Plantation to create a striking home with large porches that is perfect for guests and entertaining. Also this month, we are pleased to feature a local non-profit called Girl Power 2 Cure, another installment of “Great Homes of Fernandina” from Dickie Anderson, a birding adventure by Karen Miller, and much more. See you around the island!

f you’ve traveled east on Atlantic Avenue over Egan’s Creek Greenway lately, you probably appreciate the view of the lush marsh grass blanketing the bluffs as much as Pam and Steve Simmons, who enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the marsh and the west side of Fort Clinch State Park from their Highland Drive estate. The Simmons moved to this property 21 years ago and lived in a California ranch-style home. Around the year 2000, they began to think about a remodel, but the architect advised them that the best course of action would be to tear down the house and rebuild with a new plan. “It took us a long, long time to get used to that idea,” laughs Pam. “We feel so blessed, and we didn’t want to be wasteful, but, after a while, we realized that this decision would keep us in the place we love.” Architect Henry Price drew up the plans, and the couple unloaded the moving truck in January 2005. Enormous windows adorn the back of the house, both upstairs and down, providing a front-row seat to a breathtaking view of Amelia Island’s natural beauty and wildlife. Steve, an avid outdoorsman, encouraged the architect to incorporate the magnificent views from the property in the design, and he enjoys the unspoiled scene from the desk in his home office just off the master suite. Pam’s favorite decorative technique is the hand painting work by artist Christina Long, a one-time Amelia Island resident. “I had an idea to do etching in a bathroom, and when I saw Christina’s work, we began to include hand painting

almost everywhere,” Pam smiles. In the downstairs guest bedroom, she accented the wall paneling and added decorative designs in two bathrooms, the foyer, and striped pearlized faux in the dining room. Pam’s favorite hand painting is probably the English garden and doll house in their granddaughters’ bedroom upstairs. “When I was a little girl, I always wanted a footed tub, but my parents were told we couldn’t have it due to drainage design. I was determined to have a traditional footed tub,” explains Pam. Christina painted a beautiful English Garden in the pocket that cradles the tub, and Pam’s chandelier from when she was a little girl is the crown jewel. One unique design feature of the home is that the basement extends the length of the house, and comes complete with a bomb shelter! “We believe there are three homes on the island with shelters that were built shortly after the

Cuban missile crisis. In our old home, you accessed it through a trapdoor in the master bedroom closet,” the couple explains. This interesting feature is just the beginning of the underground basement retreat, which includes a hallway accessing eight storage closets, allowing Pam to use one closet for each season to house her holiday décor. Christina’s most detailed painting is the basement wall, where you almost feel as if you are sitting on the banks of Simmons Mill Pond in Georgia, where Steve grew up and the family maintains a vacation home. The cypress trees are three-dimensional, and you experience the peacefulness of the lake as you look at the mural, which features Steve’s father, T.C., fishing in his boat, and their granddaughters, Ashlyn and Annabelle, The Shops of Amelia Island Plantation. and Golden Retriever, Macy, sitting on

the bridge of the dam. One can imagine how restful a nap would be on the couch in front of the painted antique storefront next to the quiet basement lake. Perhaps the best part of the Simmons home is that it showcases what they care about most: nature, Pam’s love of the University of Florida Gators through her collection of memorabilia, and, most importantly, family. The photos of their daughters and grandchildren, the mound of toys in the corner of the childrens’ room, and the life-size doll house and cabinet of collectible dolls provide ample space for the children to laugh and make memories at their grandparents’ home. With a large kitchen and a dining area with plentiful seating, Pam and Steve can do what they do best in their beautiful home—love their family and enjoy time together—just the activities that makes their house “home.”

SINDA NICHOLS TO STAR IN FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BENEFIT FOR THE FERNANDINA BEACH LIBRARY
Austin Kimberly raced to twin victories and the British Racing Sports Car Club’s national Formula Ford 1600 Championship at the Trac Mon road circuit in Anglesey, Wales this fall, becoming the only American to win the prestigious British road racing championship for open wheel singleseaters. It was Kimberly’s 19th birthday. His Ray Formula Ford 1600 racer carries the logo of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, and Kimberly was quick to thank his parents, Capt. Keith Kimberly, USN, and Lorrin Kimberly, and his grandparents, long-time Amelia Island Concours staff volunteers Joan and Randy Kimberly for their support. “As a charitable foundation, we are particularly interested in supporting the ambitions and dreams of young people who wish to enter the various automotive fields,” said Bill Warner, founder and chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “Austin is in his freshman year of engineering studies and has taken the first big step toward his goal of becoming an engineer and racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Everyone at ‘The Amelia’ is extraordinarily proud that he’s carrying our colors.” The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance returns March 9-11. For more information, please visit www.ameliaconcours.org.

For the last three years, acclaimed actress Sinda Nichols has enthralled audiences in the U.S. and Ireland with her portrayal of poet Emily Dickinson in the one-woman show, “The Belle of Amherst,” directed by Ron Kurtz. Now, the talented pair is collaborating on another play about a “lady of letters” – advice columnist Ann Landers – which premieres locally at the Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach on January 25. “The Lady with All the Answers” by David Rambo is drawn from the life and letters of Ann Landers. The play is a witty exploration of the wise, funny, and no-nonsense Esther Lederer, who for half a century wrote the popular Ann Landers advice column. The January 25th premiere is the centerpiece of an exclusive benefit hosted by the Friends of the Library to raise funds for the expansion and renovation of the Fernandina Beach Library. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a reception featuring wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and more. Tickets are $100 for café table seating and $75 for theater seating. n 2002, artist Sandra Baker-Hinton decided that it was time to live her dream of being fully involved in her art career. Already she had achieved recognition by becoming accepted as a Signature Member of many prestigious state watercolor organizations, and she was also accepted into the National Watercolor Society, one of the top two most prestigious American art associations. Armed with an impressive resume, a lot of talent, and a deep desire to make a new life centered around her art, she and husband, Bruce, moved to Amelia Island. Her experience doing the bookkeeping of a successful co-op gallery in Chattanooga, Tennessee had armed her with the skills needed to work with consignment artists and the experience of making a gallery work. When offered the opportunity to open her own gallery and studio space in the same building where she already had a working studio, she was ready. The gallery still doubles as her studio, but it has also become the
center of spreading the word about sea turtles, which have become the next most important thing in her life. For the past eleven years, she has given her time working with the Sea Turtle Patrol of Fort Clinch State Park. This position has opened up a whole new world of photography, as well as a love for the natural world of Amelia Island and its denizens of the air and sea. It has also provided inspiration for paintings that have become important to her and the collectors of her art. In her gallery, she is able open young minds on Amelia Island, as well as visitors to the island, to the world of sea turtles. Raising awareness of sea turtles and sea life are an important part of her day, as people from all over the world walk through her gallery doors. Amelia SanJon Gallery features painters, sculptors, ceramic artists, fabric artists, printmakers, and glass artists. The gallery is located at 218-A Ash Street and is open seven days a week. For more information, call the gallery at (904) 491-8040.

new “A-list” hair experience has come to historic downtown Fernandina Beach: completely customized color and cuts, each done by a talented stylist with decades of experience and a great understanding of the latest techniques. Originally from Capetown, South Africa, Merle Sauer studied her craft under the tutelage of Vidal Sassoon in London. She ran her own successful salon in Atlanta before moving to Amelia Island nine years ago to start Hair by Merle, located next to Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro on South 2nd Street. She has been so busy she was unable to take on new clients—until she discovered Karen McCroskey. “When you book a color and cut with us, you literally have the place to yourself,” Sauer explains. “I consult with you on your color and formulate exactly what you need. Karen is there to take care of your cut. You can get lunch brought in from one of the nearby restaurants and enjoy the special attention. It’s a trend you see in big cities, and we’re excited to offer it here.” McCroskey has 30 years of experience and a knack for great customer communication. “I’ve always been fascinated by hair,” says McCroskey, who still owns her salon in Ohio. “When I go out with my girlfriends and they point out someone with a great dress or cool shoes, I often haven’t even noticed because I have been looking at their haircuts!” You’ll get noticed in similar fashion after you pay a visit to this “dream team.” For more information, call Merle at (904) 583-5582 or Karen at (330) 224-1964.

igh on a ridge and offering views of the ocean to the east and the tree canopy that shelters Amelia Island Plantation to the west, the Glaser home makes the most of its ideal site. The 12,500 square foot home was built in 2003. Much of the design is a result of the Glaser’s collaboration with the architect, resulting in a Low Country Coastal design with large porches and oversized windows. Surrounded by lush vegetation, the house is a hidden treasure. Two tall palms guard the soaring front entrance.

Entering the home from the second level of the house, one can see from front to back. Once in the entry door, the cleverly designed space opens to a dining room on the right and then continues to the back of the house. The living room, with its thirty foot ceilings, offers splendid views of Red Maple Lake and an Ocean Links fairway. The dining room, living room, and kitchen are completely open to each other, and yet each of the spaces is defined and shares the light flooding in through the dramatic windows.

The owners, originally from Ohio, embraced their new island lifestyle by asking Amelia Island decorator Julie Johnson, owner of Julia Hall Interiors, to make the interior as welcoming as the exterior. Julie used a variety of sources, including The Plantation Shop at Palmetto Walk, to fill the home with a relaxed elegance. You do not need to be in the Glaser home long to understand they are passionate about sports. For Gary Glaser, it is baseball. Living in Cleveland and loving baseball, he even enjoyed a stint with the Cleveland Indians farm team.

Pictures of her elegant prizewinning horses are displayed in the firstfloor office. Three guest rooms are located on the third level. When the house was designed, the Glasers decided that instead of a traditional media room, they would create a unique space, complete with its own bar, that would offer a wonderful place for them to entertain. Just outside, an inviting pool and raised spa nestles against the back of the house and is accessed from this comfortable gathering space or from stairs coming from the main floor. It offers both privacy and views over the adjacent golf course and lake. The master suite occupies the entire fourth floor. WHAT’S NEW in
HOME INTERIORS Comfort, bright accents, and repurposing are some of this year’s notable decorating trends. BY KAREN MILLER
nce upon a time, in a land far, far away, all of our furniture had to match. We loved country colonial, Tuscan décor, heavy lamps, gaudy pillows, and shabby chic. Let’s face it, home decorating trends come and go, and we like to stay on top of these trends with help from our local designers. But what if we don’t have to follow trends anymore and we can just decorate our homes the way we want? That’s what designers are saying these days. Sure, experts still claim that some colors are “in” or “out”. For 2014, radiant orchid and gray are leading the pack, according to the paint companies, who are obviously trying to sell paint. But decorators and designers suggest their clients make choices by how they live and what they like. Robyn Branch of InsideOut Home & Garden suggests cleaner looks for 2014. “We’re seeing cleaner, simpler, and more user-friendly designs,” says Branch. “Mid-century contemporary is all about clean lines. You can then embellish, if you want. Tufting is popular now. Glass and crystal lamps are beautiful. It’s nice to mix old and new items together to get the look you want.” Laura Lott Harris, owner of Lott’s Furniture, works with designer Arlene Strickland when buying furniture and accessories for the store. “We’re seeing that people are drawn to neutral fabrics for their furniture, and light wood tones,” says Harris. “They want their accessories bright and lively—pillows, rugs, and art.” Strickland adds, “We see a lot of repurposing of furniture, too, things made of reclaimed woods, metals, and also eco-friendly products.” Both women agree that people are very savvy when shopping for furniture and accessories. Families are cautious about choosing items that are comfortable, durable, and long lasting. “Our clients purchase furniture that is kid-friendly, pet-friendly and lifestylefriendly, and enhance with the latest colors and textures.” Julie Johnson, owner of Julia Hall Interiors, believes that your home should be the place that makes you the happiest. “I always feel it’s important to keep a timeless look in mind. However, it is also essential to add things in your home that make you happy! When adding the ‘latest’ color or trend or textures, make sure it is something easily changed, like painting or adding a textured wallpaper behind a bookcase, or choosing pillows that will pop with that splash of color.” Johnson goes on to say that that home décor also depends on where you live. “For 2014 we are seeing such a huge expansion of wonderful indoor/outdoor fabric selections.

The durability and performance of these fabrics make them a natural choice for a coastal area such as ours.” Meg Tawes is a designer who divides her time between Washington, DC and Amelia Island. She has noticed a trend in heirloom items among her clients. “Most clients come to me with an heirloom piece of some sort. Whether it’s an antique dining set, a piece of artwork, or even just a piece of pottery, clients are increasingly interested in featuring these vintage pieces in new and interesting ways,” says Tawes. “Painting dated wood furniture can give an old piece new life. The same goes for reupholstering a seemingly outdated sofa or even something as simple as adding a more contemporary frame to an old painting.” Tawes also suggests new lighting as a means to update your home. “A great energy-saving resource, LED is a new go-to choice for kitchen and bathroom lighting. Because they don’t get too hot and offer a slim profile, LEDs are particularly useful for under-cabinet, and even in-cabinet lighting. They may also be used for pendants, track, and even recessed lighting.” Branch agrees that coastal cottage is still a popular island style. “But we’ve taken it to a new height,” says Branch. “Mid-century coastal cottage and Caribbean contemporary are great looks for coastal living. Amelia Islanders are creative individuals, and that is reflected in their homes and lifestyles.” The goal of our talented local decorators and designers is to bring all of these elements together, no matter what the latest trends. And that makes for a beautiful home that we may live in, comfortably, happily ever after. www.AmeliaIslander.com

Girl Power Based on Amelia Island, Girl Power 2 Cure is a non-profit organization that raises awareness and funding to combat Rett Syndrome. BY JULIE SIMMONS

as your eye caught the fun orange and pink flowers on the 600 block of South Eighth Street? If not, drive by and check out the new headquarters of Girl Power 2 Cure, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and funding for treatments and a cure for Rett Syndrome, a debilitating neurological disorder that almost exclusively affects girls. Ingrid Harding, founder and executive director of Girl Power 2 Cure, knows Rett Syndrome first hand, as her daughter Sarah suffers from this most severe form of autism. “The doctors struggled to find a diagnosis for Sarah,” she explained. “Her symptoms were worsening and they told us she only had a few months to live.” When you meet Ingrid, you can see that she takes such a statement as a challenge, not a condition. Shortly after receiving that prognosis, Sarah was in a mainstream kindergarten classroom in Illinois, where the family lived. Ingrid could never have imagined that this school experience might give birth to a campaign that raised over $500,000 in 2013.
“I was amazed at how the children in Sarah’s kindergarten class loved and nurtured her, especially the girls,” Ingrid remembers. “Sarah bit her hands, drooled, screamed out, wore a diaper, and rode in a wheelchair – she was different – but the girls in her class gathered around her and had a force about them that made Sarah’s life wonderful. It was simply girl power.” As an only child and the mother of a son, girl power was something new to Ingrid. Seeing Sarah in school taught Ingrid that when a group of females is involved, something magical can happen. “I decided, ‘Let’s use this to cure something,’” Ingrid says. “This generation of girls will succeed when we empower them to change lives, and to change themselves.” And with that, Ingrid embraced girl power for the first time. “Our inspiration is our flower: always in bloom with hope and positive energy, ready to grow anywhere there is someone ready to join in our mission,” explains Ingrid. The mission is a powerful one, with new medical research proving

that Rett Syndrome is a potentially reversible disorder. This news powers the Girl Power 2 Cure team, which is committed to making this disease, which is as prevalent as Cystic Fibrosis, ALS, and Huntington’s, the first reversible neurological disorder through harnessing the spirit of girls to support fellow girls who are suffering. In the past eight years, Girl Power 2 Cure outgrew its office in Ingrid and Peter Harding’s home and they opened their South Eighth Street headquarters in September. “We are thrilled to be able to say we are headquartered on Amelia Island. The community here is incredibly diverse and charitable. And, as we grow, we always want to keep ‘one foot in the sand’ by staying true to our mission while maintaining a grassroots feel and culture,” Ingrid said. “Our flower and the island life go perfectly together!” To learn more about Girl Power 2 Cure, visit their website at girlpower2cure.org or their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ girlpower2cure. A special event to raise awareness and funds to fight Rett Syndrome is the Disney Princess Half Marathon on February 23. The Swann-Kelly House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES
A
nother distinctive home in the Historic District, the Swann-Kelly house is an outstanding example of a Queen Anne house. A Shingle-Style Queen Anne, the house utilized a variety of windows, shingle designs, and elaborate trim. A generous open verandah and a second story porch grace the front of the home. On the left, or north side, of the house, a signature series of stain glass windows can be seen marking the interior stairway leading to the second floor, a typical Queen Anne detail. All three fireplaces feed into one main chimney. The home was built by Samuel Swann for his son, Donovan, a well-recognized artist. David Yulee’s railroad brought Swann to the island, and he was considered one of Yulee’s key men. He handled much of the railroad’s real estate dealings. Swann was said to be the major landowner in the area. Swann was head of the Fernandina Town Development Company, a brickyard owner, shipper, philanthropist, and devout church warden at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. In 1862, he became a blockade runner. Appointed to the War Department of the Confederacy, he sold cotton and sugar and purchased food supplies and ammunition. Bricks from
his brick yard were used at Ft. Clinch. An additional and most interesting note is that Swann’s wife’s aunt was Mary Martha Reid, who helped found the Hospital for Florida Soldiers in Richmond, Virginia, where she served as a nurse during the Civil War. She was the third wife of Robert Raymond Reid, a U. S. Judge and Territorial Governor of Florida. David Levy Yulee trained for the bar under Judge Reid. Her first son died in infancy, and the second, Raymond Jenckes Reid, was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness. After the war, she established a school. When her niece died, she moved in with Samuel Swan to help raise his children. There is a window in St. Peter’s dedicated to her memory. The house was sold in 1900 and had several owners. D.A. Kelly purchased the house and adjacent lots for $3,500. Kelly and his brother, William Redmond Kelly, owned and operated a ship’s chandlery at the old Hoyt Building on the corner of Centre and North Second streets. William Redmond Kelly married Grace Leddy, owner and manager of the Florida House Inn. D.A. Kelly was a leader in the community and served in the Florida Legislature.

in the garden
multi-pur multi-purpose mint Aromatic Corsican Mint makes a durable ground cover in place of grass, and it has a wonderful fragrance.
BY BETTY MORRELL
N
ow that the holidays are over, it is time to turn our thoughts to the garden, or what I call “armchair gardening.” Perhaps you would like to start a new bed, or get rid of one, or maybe cut back on the amount of grass and put in ground cover. There are so many things you can do! Maintenancefree gardening is something to strive for; however, I have never really come up with a garden that is completely maintenance-free. There is always work to be done! If you have an area in your yard where you would like to put ground cover instead of grass, consider Coriscan Mint (Mentha requienii). It can take a lot of abuse—when you walk on it, it bounces back! However, this plant needs lots of moisture and shade. If you have a wet area, like a downspout, or low area where it is wet, this plant will do well. Give this happy, little mint sandy soil and dappled light. Like other mints, Corsican Mint is a creeper, and once it finds a spot it will fill in the spaces. You can plant Corsican Mint between stepping stones or under the

outside faucet where it will get moisture. This mint is a great companion for an herb pot and produces tiny, pink flowers in mid-summer. Its fragrance is wonderful; just close your eyes and enjoy its aroma. You’ll think you have a glass of crème de menthe in front of you! Corsican Sandwort is another great ground cover. It is a cousin to Irish Moss (Sagina). This little evergreen is a slow grower with a height of only 1 to 2 inches and bears tiny white flowers in late spring among its tiny dark green leaves. Sandwort (Arenaria balearica) can be planted in sandy or normal soils. It likes normal to moist conditions. Plant it as a ground cover, and this plant will spread 12 to 18 inches, tolerating light

foot traffic. You can divide these little plants in early spring or late fall, and they will slowly spread into a beautiful moss-like carpet of green leaves. Have you tried the Weeping Pixie Loropetalum? This plant really shines when it comes to color. It is a dwarf weeping plant, 1 to 2 feet high by 4 to 5 feet wide, producing magenta ribbons in spring. It works well in containers, on slopes, or would be beautiful in a flower box in full sun to part shade. Flirt Nandina is also a dwarf, 1 to 2 feet high and 1.5 to 2 feet wide. Its mature growth is evergreen, with stunning deep red new growth. It likes full sun to part shade. A big container with multiple plantings is a fine addition to your garden. Try a fine-leafed Cordyline in the middle of your container, with Purple Pixie Loropetalum, Cajun Blue Scaevola, Little Black Magic Dwarf Elephant Ear, and maybe a spider plant or two, or add whatever suits your fancy. This would be a pretty container combination. As always, please e-mail me at bamorrell@aol.com with any questions. Happy New Year, and Happy Gardening!

Peppers MEXICAN GRILL & CANTINA Using only the freshest ingredients, Peppers Mexican Grill serves up delicious Mexican food and tequila cocktails. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
T
he Garcia family has been serving up real Mexican food for many years. Hailing from Degollado, a small city in the eastern highlands of the Mexican state of Jalisco, the Garcias pride themselves on fresh ingredients and attention to detail in their busy restaurant, Peppers Mexican Grill & Cantina. Degollado is known for its tequila, and manager Vanessa Garcia introduced me to two specialty tequila cocktails when I came in for dinner with my friend, Sherry. “You must try La Paloma,” said Vanessa. “It is made with tequila. It is what the Mexicans drink, the most popular in all of Mexico.” La Paloma is made with tequila, grapefruit soda, lime, and orange. The rim of the glass is coated in a spicy chili powder. Sherry and I sampled this beverage, along with another tequila drink called Dynamite Margarita, an enormous cocktail made with 1800 coconut tequila, Midori, pineapple juice, sour mix, and coconut Malibu. Both drinks were wonderful, but La Paloma was our favorite. It is light and refreshing, and we could see why it was so popular. While we sipped our drinks, we enjoyed Peppers wonderful appetizers—Tortilla Chips with Salsa, Chorizo con Queso, and their homemade Guacamole. Peppers makes all their dishes from scratch every day—the salsa is fresh and lively, bursting with cilantro, and their queso cheese and avocado dips are perfectly seasoned and delightful. I could live on Peppers’ dips! For dinner, our server Jeff brought us two of Peppers’ most popular dishes – Mariachi, and Fajita Mexico. Mariachi features fresh grouper grilled and topped with juicy shrimp, sautéed onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and spicy jalapenos. Fajita Mexico is a sizzling fajita dish with grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, sautéed onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes, served with pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, flour tortillas, rice, and black beans. Here’s where Peppers is the shining star of Mexican restaurants: the ingredients are fresh, and each dish is freshly made when you place your order. The grouper was perfectly cooked, spicy
and wonderful, the fajita tender and savory. Peppers gives their diners a lot of food, and I always have plenty to take home for dinner the next day. For dessert, Vanessa suggested we try their Tres Leches Cake, and also Chocoflan, a new addition to their menu. Tres Leches cake is a vanilla cake infused with three varieties of milk, and topped with a secret white frosting. It is moist and sweet, and served with a trio of syrup drizzles—chocolate, strawberry, and lime. It is one of my favorite Mexican desserts! The Chocolflan is unique and also delicious, a chocolate cake topped with flan and baked in the oven, then served with whipped cream. A perfect ending to our fine meal. Peppers is now offering a special Tequila Tasting Experience, a great way to get to know this complex spirit, distilled from the fermented juice of the Agave plant. For one price, your bartender will provide a tequila sampler, and explain the differences in the varieties, their tastes, and textures. Much like wine, tequila is a multifaceted and fascinating potion. This would be a great way to celebrate an evening with friends at Peppers—a tequila tasting, followed by a fine Mexican dinner. Peppers is located on Centre Street in downtown Fernandina Beach, and open seven days a week. You can visit them at www.peppersmexican.com.

The Amelia Island Nature Center’s birding tours are a great way to learn about the wildlife of Amelia Island. BY KAREN MILLER
T
he Amelia Island Nature Center at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort is a great place for an outdoor adventure. I am amazed at how many tours and programs it offers. Its young naturalists, Levi Welling and Brett Hartmann, agreed to take me on a birding excursion around the resort recently, so I arrived at the center early one morning to peruse its well-stocked retail shop and meet some of the animals that reside there. Rescued animals, such as squirrels, are cared for and let back into the wild when they are well enough to make it on their own. A new addition to the critter family is Mickey, a baby possum that was the cutest little thing! A new kitten has also recently made its home at the center, and visitors can see several varieties of turtles, fish, and even snakes. Amelia Island Plantation is an Audubon birding location, and a fine place to see some rare and common species of birds. My personal tour began with a borrowed copy of Sibley’s Guide to Birds and a pair of binoculars. We stepped out onto the deck at the Nature Center, which overlooks a lake, and we saw some common species such as Blue Jays and some songbirds. Brett and Levi then loaded me into a golf cart, and we headed for the golf course, one the best places for birding at the Plantation. There we saw many kinds of birds—Cormorants, Anhingas, and several types of ducks. A Red Shouldered Hawk flew high above us, searching for prey, while the cormorants dove deep into the water for fish. The anhingas perched on branches, drying their wings in the warm sun. Levi pointed out that anhingas don’t have oil on their feathers like other water birds, so they must dry out in between their jaunts into the water. From there we took several roads through the neighborhoods of the Plantation to visit other water areas alive with birds and ducks. Brett showed me how to use my binoculars to search within the trees and see the elusive Black Crowned Night Heron. The two naturalists also showed me how to identify the various species of ducks. Throughout the trip, I learned to spot Hooded Mergansers, Wood Ducks, Mallards, and Muscovy Ducks. They also took me to a small pond located across the street from the Property Owners Clubhouse. There we saw the beautiful and intriguing Roseate Spoonbills, and some rather rare Wood Storks. Brett and Levi explained that the pink color of the spoonbills comes from their diet of crustaceans; the deeper the color of the feathers, the older the bird is. Wood Storks used to be on the endangered list, but they have made a comeback recently. The end of our one-hour tour put us at Drummond Point Park, near the vast marsh at the Plantation, where we saw Great Blue Herons, Snowy Egrets, and White Ibis. In all, we saw over twenty species of beautiful birds, and I learned a lot about them and their pristine environments. To reserve a spot on one of their numerous birding or other eco friendly tours, call the Amelia Island Nature Center at (904) 261-6161.

If you’re over age 50, get screened for colorectal cancer. Lack of symptoms doesn’t mean lack of risk. A colonoscopy is your best defense. Because they are so effective, colonoscopies are covered by most insurance plans and Medicare. If your exam is normal and you have no family history, you probably won’t need another exam for 10 years.
